Dear Mentor Family, Being a mentor family is an incredibly important responsibility.

It is a great honor because you will be passing on the special heritage of Sacred Heart, the importance of the Goals and Criteria, and what it means to be part of our community.

Accepting the role of a mentor family is a concrete example of living Goal 4: The building of community as a Christian Value.

This is one of the most important aspects of your mentor role sharing with new parents the importance of the Sacred Heart bond.

The mission of mentoring is a commitment. To help you with this, I have developed the New Parent Mentor Guide to assist you in answering questions about the history and traditions so sacred to the Academy. Also included in the guide is a monthly checklist which highlights Academy events, historical information, Sacred Heart traditions and relevant school information to assist new families to become fully engaged with the Academy. It is important that you regularly check-in with your new mentee family to share these Sacred Heart stories, traditions and events. The frequency will change as the new family becomes more acclimated to the community. You and your mentee family may set up any kind of schedule, formal or informal, that suits you both, but it is necessary to have frequent contact throughout the year. Please take the initiative in setting up these early meetings and conversations.

Glossary of Terms Building Names Arcade Hallway connects the Historic Wing to Cribbin Hall Archives preserve the Academy’s historic documents and data in a newly renovated space in the lower level of the Shrine of St. Philippine Duchesne. These archives contain books and other personal belongings of St. Philippine Duchesne, journals kept by the Religious of the Sacred Heart through the years, school uniforms, newspaper clippings, photos and more.

Cribbin Hall dedicated to Mother Catherine Cribbin RSCJ, houses the Academy library. Originally built in 1883 as a chapel for the cloistered religious, the library is often used for meetings and performances.

Historic Wing dating to 1836 housed the original convent, school and girls dormitory are now home to the Shrine Gift Shop and French Library. The parlors and conference rooms are used for meetings and events today.

Primary Wing built in 1890 is home to the Little Acorn, Pre-Primary and Primary Classrooms.

Regis Hall houses the Middle School 7th and 8th classrooms, was built in 1966. It is named for one of St. Philippine Duchesne’s most beloved patron saints, John Francis Regis. He was a Jesuit who lived, ministered and died in France in the seventeenth century. Although he had hoped to become a missionary to the Native Americans in Canada that permission was never granted and so his short life as a priest was spent in regions very familiar to Mother Duchesne. If she could indeed accomplish what he had hoped to do, she was determined to honor his intercession toward her cause by establishing a shrine in the convent or school where she settled in America.

Rauch Memorial, the newest building on campus built in 1986 houses the Academy’s gymnasium. It is named in memory of Laura Diercker Rauch, daughter of Elizabeth Rauch and sister of alumna Lucy Rauch.

Stuart Center is the name given to the building which is on the northeast corner of the property. Built in the 1980s, it is named after a renowned Religious of the Sacred Heart, Janet Erskine Stuart, who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After an illustrious career as spiritual guide and educator, Mother Stuart was Superior General of the International Society until her death in 1914.

Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne constructed in 1951 after the beatification of St. Philippine. The shrine was remodeled and rededicated in 1966. The Shrine is the final resting place of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne.

Science Wing originally built in 1886, the Science Wing houses the Middle School 5th and 6th Classrooms and two middle school science labs.

South Wing built in 1961serves as classroom space for the lower school homerooms and encore classrooms including the lower school science lab, computer room, Kaleidoscope, health and World language classrooms.

White Center part of the South Wing originally housed a gymnasium now houses the cafeteria, Spirit Shop and music classroom. It is named after Lee I. and Beatrice White who donated funds to construct the building in 1961.

School Terms Buzz Book is a directory of faculty, staff, parent and student information provided to facilitate communication of school-related matters among members of the school community.

Congé is a tradition within all Sacred Heart Schools. On this day, students take a break from their regular studies and have a day of fun and games.

Originally, the Religious planned the activities for the girls in the boarding schools. Today, Congé at the Academy is an opportunity for Eighth Class students to exercise skills of planning and organizing as they prepare the games for the younger students. The actual date changes each year, and is always a surprise for students, faculty and staff.

Early Arrival/Late Dismissal program (EA/LD) is designed for working parents who need to bring their children to school before regular school hours and/or pick them up after regular school hours. (Regular school hours are from 7:40 am to 3:45 pm) First Fridays are special days in all Sacred Heart Schools. The Society of the Sacred Heart is consecrated to the Heart of Jesus; therefore, giving special love to Our Lord on the First Friday of every month has always been a devotion close to the hearts of Religious and children of the Sacred Heart. All come together to celebrate the liturgy and to express love of Jesus and love for each other. In addition, Eucharistic Adoration takes place in the Shrine.

Goûter is a French word meaning “to taste.” This tradition of providing a little treat is important on feast days and at other celebrations.

Little Glimpses are opportunities for parents to come to school and observe a learning experience with their child in the classroom once during the course of the school year.

P/LS is an abbreviation used for the Primary and Lower School. Primary classes include Little Acorns (3 year old), Pre-Primary (4 year old) and Primary (kindergarten). Lower School includes 1st thru 4th classes.

Parent Portal refers to the secure parent portion of the Academy website.

The parent portal includes specific information for each grade level class, parent resources and uniform information.

Parent Coordinating Council, often abbreviated as PCC, every school

parent is a member of the Parent Coordinating Council, the Academy’s parent organization. General PCC meetings are held at least twice each year, featuring guest speakers, school announcements and report card distribution.

MS is often used to indicate Middle School. Middle School at the Academy includes 5th thru 8th classes. Middle school classes are gender specific.

Network of Sacred Heart Schools is an association of Catholic independent schools and the Province, which advances the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart. The Network provides services and programs that promote and stimulate creative education and leadership framed by the Goals and Criteria for Sacred Heart Schools in the United States. There are 24 schools in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States and Canada. Our students are boys and girls from early childhood to twelfth grade. There are over 12,000 students guided by over 2,000 Sacred Heart educators nationwide. You are invited to explore the 21st century Network of Sacred Heart Schools via www.sacredhearusc.edu RSCJ are the initials for RSCJ and stand for Religieuses du Sacré-Coeur de Jesu and is the French name. In English, the order refers to themselves as Religious of the Sacred Heart. The RSCJ were founded by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800.

Silver Tea is the name given to the Academy’s Christmas program.

Preparation for this choral performance is part of Academy training.

Perseverance, persistence, poise and self-discipline are all learned, above and beyond the music and the story. The name of the performance is derived from silver bowls which are put out at the reception following the performances. The bowls are intended to invite contributions for the faculty and staff Christmas bonus. Parents are asked to make this “the” Christmas gift for their child’s teacher. No other gift is needed. The process allows every employee to be a recipient of parents’ generosity.

Mater Admirabilis Reflection on the Sacred Heart Heritage: The Story of the Fresco In 1844, a generation after the Society of the Sacred Heart was founded, Pauline Perdrau, a young novice, took it upon herself to produce a fresco of the Virgin Mary on a wall in a recreational area of the convent, Trinita dei Monti in Rome.

As a child, Pauline had a favorite pink dress, so she chose to paint Mary as a young woman in a rose-colored dress rather than as a matronly Madonna in blue. The lily at Mary’s side represented her purity; the distaff and spindle, her love of work; a book, her dedication to study.

Although Pauline put herself wholeheartedly into her task, her inexperience with the technique of fresco did not produce the beautiful soft painting for which she had hoped. The too vivid colors had to be hidden behind a drape. Pope Pius IX, upon visiting the convent, requested that the curtain be removed. Seeing the fresco of Our Lady, its colors inexplicably softened, he exclaimed, “Mater Admirabilis,” Latin for Mother Most Admirable. Miracles soon began with the removal of a curse of a missionary priest who had completely lost the power of speech.

Permission was given to offer Mass before the miraculous picture and to celebrate the feast of Mater Admirabilis on October 20. Since then, this feast day is most important to all students, faculty, alumnae, alumni and Religious of the Sacred Heart. Mater Admirabilis is the patroness of the school life of Sacred Heart students. You will find her picture and statue in every Sacred Heart school around the world.

Our Saint -Rose Philippine Duchesne Foundress of the Academy of the Sacred Heart Long before she set foot on American soil

in 1818, Rose Philippine Duchesne dreamt of coming to the New World and teaching the Indians. Born in 1769 in Grenoble, France, she had grown up in a loving family whose political alliances made them prominent in the pre-Revolutionary turmoil that was welling up around them. As a young child she was sent to the Visitation Convent in her city; but it was often at home or in her parish church that she would hear missionary priests describe their recent adventures far across the ocean. Teaching the “savages” whom they described was a work that captured her heart!

Her decision to enter the religious life was not welcomed by her father, who terminated her attendance at the Ste. Marie d’en Haute when he heard of her plans. When she was a little older she climbed the hill on the outskirts of Grenoble and announced to her aunt that this time she was staying with the Visitandines. And so, she did for several years—until the outbreak of the war, when religious houses all over France were being closed. Obediently she returned to her home and made a docile effort to re-enter domestic life at the family’s country home but decided, in a short time, that she could be more effective working for the many poor, homeless, sick and dying who were languishing in the city.

After the war she resolved to buy back her beloved Ste. Marie, which was in shambles since it had been used as a barracks and military prison during that Reign of Terror. Her valiant attempts to bring back the nuns who had once lived there were futile. Many had died, others did not want to return; and the few who did return refused to recognize her as their superior. With so much

to do in order to restore the building to its former state of dignity (and with so few to help in the project), she was nearing complete failure when a new hope came into her life.

Madeleine Sophie Barat, who had just established a new congregation of religious women in the northern part of France, traveled to Grenoble and invited Philippine Duchesne to join her in her work of teaching young girls.

And so, at the age of 35 she was finally secure in a vocation that would carry her to her very holy death.

Missionary Destiny Although she was fulfilled in her various activities in Sacred Heart convents in France for the next 13 years, Philippine never abandoned her dream of the mission that she had adopted as a young child—to go to America and teach the Indians. When Bishop William Valentine DuBourg visited the convent in Paris in 1817, she seized upon the opportunity and implored Mother Barat to grant her the permission that she so craved. (Bishop DuBourg’s diocese was nearly all the Louisiana Territory, so Indians were only one of the several challenges that he faced.) Permission was granted, and a year later she and four religious companions began the journey to their missionary destiny. A 70-day voyage across the Atlantic brought the five Religious to New Orleans, where they rested briefly with the kind Ursulines before resuming their travels in a paddlewheel steamer up the Mississippi to St. Louis.

The Bishop, of course, knew that she was coming but he also knew that he had no house in the city to accommodate the five Religious. The offer of a log cabin for rent in St. Charles was the solution for DuBourg and the destiny for the First Free School West of the Mississippi. That first year saw three little St. Louis girls come as boarders and 21 non-paying day students who came when they could during that long, bitter winter. (Some children had no shoes; some had no underwear!)

The following summer the Bishop took the Religious of the Sacred Heart to Florissant, a village on the other side of the Missouri River, where they conducted their school and Mother Duchesne established her novitiate for the Society.

In 1828 the Jesuits built a parish church on what is our school property today and asked the Sacred Heart Religious to return to St. Charles (to that same log cabin, which was known as the “Duquette Mansion” because it was the biggest house in town) and conduct the parish school. They did so and finally, in 1835, built their first brick building, which still stands as the center of our sprawling complex to this day.

Mother Duchesne finally realized her dream to teach Indian children at the age of 72 when she made the journey to Sugar Creek, Kansas. Learning the Pottawatomi language proved even harder for her than English had been in Missouri and Louisiana so her superiors decided that she should return to a more comfortable life in what had been her first home in America, St. Charles. The lesson that she had taught the native Americans was more valuable than she ever estimated. The Indians called her Quakahkanumad (woman who prays always) and revered her for her deep devotion to “the Great Spirit.”

Sainthood Rose Philippine Duchesne spent the last ten years of her life in St. Charles, where she died on November 18, 1852. Her cause for canonization was introduced in 1895. She was declared “Venerable” in 1909 and “Blessed” in 1940. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988.

Because the French word for “oak” is chêne (and because du chêne means “of oak”), symbols of oak leaves and acorns are often seen in Sacred Heart schools in America to recall the name of the woman who pioneered Sacred Heart education in the New World. It is our great honor that our school was her first in this country and that her holy remains are enshrined here.

Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat Foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart Born in Burgundy, the daughter of a vintner and barrel maker, the Foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart grew up in the modest town of Joigny with the unusual advantage of a formal education having been tutored by her brother, Louis who was attending the seminary at Sens in northern France. After his ordination in 1795. Father Louis Barat S.J. returned home to find that his little sister, then a mature young lady of 15, was suitably prepared to accompany him to Paris and share his apostolic work there.

Sophie’s early mission in the capital city was the teaching of young women. It was there that she met Father Joseph Varin, a friend of Louis, who became her mentor and spiritual advisor. On November 21, 1800 Father Varin presided over the consecration of her and her three companions’ lives to the service of God. Sophie, 20 at the time, was the only one of the four to sustain her commitment.

Timeless Principles The spread of the Society of the Sacred Heart across the continent of Europe was to occupy the remainder of Mother Barat’s life. The commissioning of her dear friend and confidant, Rose Philippine Duchesne, signaled the beginning of the missionary activity that would spread the order’s mission around the globe.

Laying aside her childhood dream of the contemplative life, this indefatigable woman used her prodigious gifts to open more than 80 houses where education was offered to young ladies of means and position. Nevertheless, her lifelong concern for the poor moved her to ignite that selfless spirit in her sisters and the children they taught.

The work of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, so energetically begun more than two centuries ago, was secured by the timeless principles and wise constitutions that its foundress provided so providentially during her long lifetime. Madeleine Sophie Barat died in Paris in 1865—13 years after the death of Philippine Duchesne. She was canonized in 1925.

Academy Fundraisers Academy Classic Golf Tournament – Held in the fall, the annual golf

tournament offers opportunities to participate as a golfer, a spectator, a volunteer or a sponsor to raise funds for the Academy. Played at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club, widely considered to be one of the best championship public golf courses in Missouri with its challenging layout and stunning vistas.

Opened in 1995, it remains the only St Louis area golf club designed by legendary golf course architect, Tom Fazio and is ranked as the #1 public golf course in the area.

Annual Fund – The Academy relies on trustees, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends to support the Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund enable us to maintain and enhance the overall quality of education offered at the Academy. The Annual Fund campaign provides unrestricted operating support for the Academy’s budget and allows the school to move forward in a strategic fashion in accord with our current strategic plan. Each school family is expected to participate in the Annual Fund. A goal of 100% participation for family, faculty and staff is often an important indicator for outside organizations considering contributions to the Academy. Every single gift regardless of size makes a difference to the success of the Annual Fund campaign.

Chemin de Fer – The Academy’s single largest fundraiser, is a festive

themed gala dinner-auction with something for everyone! Held on the first Saturday in May, the gymnasium is transformed into an “exotic” destination for the gala. Translated from the French word meaning railroad, guests “board” the Chemin train and travel to exotic and interesting destinations where generous Academy donors raise a substantial sum for the Academy’s yearly operating budget. There are abundant opportunities for sponsorships, volunteering, donating and , purchasing unique and one of a kind items to benefit the Academy.

Country Fair – The Academy’s old-fashioned fall festival—a day of fun

for the whole family! The Academy community comes together to make this special event possible, with parents and alumni staffing booths and helping behind the scenes. There's something for everyone, with lots of exciting games and prizes, tasty treats, entertainment, shopping and more!

Pavers - As we entered our third century, the time had come for a new path

into the Academy. The new entrance now provides a portal to our school that is visible, bright, and welcoming - an entry that offers a clear sense of arrival.

Purchasing a personalized paver helps offset the cost of the new entrance.

Pavers may be purchased for $200.

Trivia Night - The annual winter competition sponsored by the Fathers’ Club

takes place in January and features 10 rounds of trivia questions with cash prizes for first and second place. 50/50 raffles, basket raffles, and more contribute to the financial success of this fun event!
