GREETINGS CHEMIN DE FER SPACE TRAVELERS, We are so excited to present this year’s Chemin de Fer! Chemin whether in person at the Launch Party or online for the Auction, provides a great opportunity for friends of the Academy to gather and celebrate all that we love about our school and all that we hope for its future. After the challenging times we have all experienced this past year, it is wonderful to be able to come together to celebrate this amazing school of Christ’s heart. For many of us the concept of space travel is futuristic and thrilling. The idea of travelling beyond what is familiar into the great unknown is both exciting and formidable, an experience not unlike that which St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and her companions encountered as they endeavored to open our Academy. They, like Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ knew The higher we want to fly, the greater the risk, but that is glorious part of it. The great uncertainties in which we trust God, the breathless risks we run, with no assurance but our great trust in God, that seems to me to be of the essence of our life and its beauty. This will grow upon you; you will get your balance in the risk and get to love it. In this anniversary year of Alan Shepherd’s suborbital flight (the first for the USA), President John F. Kennedy setting the Apollo lunar landing and return goals within the decade (in a speech to Congress) and the launch of Mariner 9- the first spacecraft to obit Mars- we celebrate the great advances in space and look forward to those yet to come. So, whether it is a jet pack or an Atlas V rocket, prepare to blast off into space. As with all travel, make sure you review the Virtual Chemin de Fer Book so that you can make the most of the experience. It is going to be an exciting week online as we ready ourselves to boldly go where no Chemin de Fer has gone before! Let us also express our gratitude to Chemin Chairs Jessica and Mike Weeks and Co-Chairs Melissa and Justin Setser who along with many wonderful volunteers have planned every detail of the hybrid on-campus and virtual journey. A special note of gratitude goes out to our Special Events Coordinator, Anna Godfrey ’07, for offering us a new means of ‘launching’ Chemin. Our gratitude for their hard work can be best expressed through enthusiastic bidding that will deliver the hoped-for success they envision at the conclusion of this Chemin journey. Thank you for joining the us as we celebrate and support the Academy of the Sacred Heart- a safe launching point for the dreams of our students, faculty and parents.

Susan Tyree Dempf, Ph.D. Head of School 2

THANK YOU FROM THE CHAIRS Welcome to the 2021 Chemin de Fer Experience! We are so excited to present this year’s auction weekend. This year, we are celebrating a hybrid weekend of events, and hope that you have a blast while raising money for our beloved Academy. What better time than 2021 to celebrate our teachers and faculty as the honorary chairs. We can all agree that this team of educators is stellar! They are dedicated to our students’ success, not only academically, but also as growing conscientious leaders through the five goals. We are overjoyed to see the generosity and heart that our school is built upon, and we are thrilled to continue to enjoy the camaraderie of coming together for one worthy cause. There are so many people to thank for planning, implementing, and supporting a successful Chemin! First, we would like to thank Anna Godfrey, Lisa Tebbe, Nora Brooks, Will Yates, and the Advancement and Business offices for their dedication and hard work preparing for Chemin. Next, we would like to thank each of our Chemin Committee members. Chemin is a big commitment and takes many willing, dedicated, and creative volunteers to continue building this great community that we all love. Finally, we would like to thank the Administration for all of your support. Your words of encouragement, fundraising, and ever-present positivity make this celebration what it is. We are so fortunate to have been on this Chemin journey with you! The Chemin auction is made successful through every person reading this letter and attending the events. Thank you to our sponsors and donors that have given so generously already to Chemin 2021 and thank you to all of you that are about to bid on items and make this weekend an exciting fun-filled success! We have been counting down to this event and we are ready to launch with you!

A HEART FILLED WITH GRATITUDE FOR OUR HONORARY CHAIRS…THE TEACHERS This year we recognize the faculty members of the Academy of the Sacred Heart as our Chemin de Fer Honorary Chairs. In this difficult time of global pandemic, our teachers have taken on many new challenges. These days of shared sacrifice and service reflect those of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat as she worked to meet the needs presented in her lifetime. Sophie understood education to be the means through which children experience the love of God and in living that experience, they come to know their true identity as God’s Beloved. It is through education that students grow in this understanding self and God. Our teachers, and truly each staff member who supports the learning environment, convey that love. Recently, I had the chance to engage my Third Class ‘Lunch Bunch’ in a conversation about their teachers. This is what they shared: • The teachers encourage you to do your best. • They always have a smile on their face and that puts a smile on mine. • The teachers welcome new students. • They work their hardest and remind us to pray. • They all are happy to see us every day. • They help you to get through the tough times. • The teachers are understanding and encourage you to learn new things. • They offer us quiet time [Espacio] during the day so that we can pray. • They always make sure you know that God comes first before everything. • Even wearing a mask, I can still tell they are smiling- their eyes tell me so. These wise observations provide evidence of the love with which students are greeted and educated. I am so pleased to recognize in a special way our teachers. They, whether online or in the classroom, reflect the sacred responsibility of preparing Academy students for their future and to serve the purpose that God has given to each. For all that you share with your students each and every day, we thank you.

2021 FUND-THE-NEED P E R S E V E R A N C E A N D I N G E N U I T Y: T O U C H I N G T H E F U T U R E THROUGH TECHNOLO GY ENHANCEMENT One of the hallmarks of Sacred Heart education involves the teaching of problem solving techniques. The ‘Sacred Heart way’ of looking at a situation or problem involves: pausing, reflecting, discerning, deciding, acting and evaluating. This mirrors the scientific methodobservation, inquiry, hypothesizing, prediction, testing and iteration of finding to advance the body of knowledge. Students, through being posed problems, develop both perseverance (the ultimate solution may not be the first one tried) and ingenuity (the ability to see through a new lens - to be innovative). In this day and age, technology is a tool through which these learning opportunities are achieved. The 2021 Fund-the-Need giving opportunity focuses our attention on the Academy’s technology, including: our infrastructure, devices and expanding our program offerings. Specifically, by upgrading our fiber lines we will be able to increase our bandwidth (we are at capacity with our current fiber lines). Undertaking this upgrade will allow us ‘room to grow’ and help us to keep up with the increasing demands of our student and teacher users. Donations raised through this year’s Fund-the-Need will also support the work of our Honorary Chairs, the teachers. Faculty laptops were the lifeline between students, parents, teachers and the school last year as instruction went online due to COVID-19 restrictions. These much-used devices are ready for replacement. Your support of the Fund-the-Need will help the Academy to provide a new laptop to teachers for the start of the 2021-2022 academic year and help facilitate the work of these valued professional educators. Finally, a successful Fund-the-Need will allow us to offer students instructional enrichment in the area of technology. Recently, the Academy identified an opportunity to expand our coding instruction- specifically the transition from block-based languages to JAVA script. This will be accomplished, in part, through the acquisition of a set of instructional drones. Fund-the-Need will support this exciting opportunity. Students at the Academy begin to learn the skills of coding as early as Primary Class and progress from simple ‘game like’ situations to real world applications. We are so excited to expand these opportunities and to help students prepare for their future. One need only to look to the nightly news and the reports covering the Mars mission to see that Perseverance and Ingenuity are the tools that will bring us forward as we explore our world.
