AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NBRA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MARTYN ROWLEY Can you provide a brief overview of your career leading up to your current role as the Executive Director of the NBRA/VBRA? My professional journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and experience in the automotive industry. I began my professional life at the age of 16 as a trainee mechanic, where I cultivated a solid foundation in the technical aspects of vehicle repair. Over time, I transitioned from the shop floor to administrative roles, demonstrating my adaptability and commitment to personal growth. My path led me through various positions such as Service Manager, Bodyshop Manager, and Aftersales Manager, both in dealership and independent settings. This diverse experience provided me with comprehensive view of the automotive sector, spanning technical repairs to managerial responsibilities. I’ve had the privilege of working for a range of entities, including insurance-owned accident repair centres and renowned manufacturers such as Citroen UK and Ford Motor Company. These experiences not only broadened my expertise but also exposed me to different facets of the industry, fostering a comprehensive view of automotive operations. In the later stages of my career, roles with leading estimating platforms delved into the technological side, offering insights into cutting-edge tools and methodologies. Now, as the Executive Director of the NBRA & VBRA, I hope I will bring to the table a wealth of experience and a unique perspective shaped by my journey from the shop floor to the executive suite , equipped to navigate industry challenges and contribute to success.

What have been the key milestones or turning points in your career that have led you to where you are today? Around 2002, transitioning to a field role with Ford Motor Company marked a pivotal moment. Actively engaging with and assisting Ford Accident Repair Centres provided valuable insights and ideas to address industry challenges. As part of the FMC team, we collectively conceived and implemented the “Bodyshop Upgrade Program.” This initiative aimed at enhancing efficiency and profitability for numerous individuals and businesses. The success of this program demonstrated the power of collaborative efforts in driving positive change within the industry.

5

A turning point in my career occurred when I joined Audatex. This transition opened new doors and broadened my horizons within the bodyshop realm. With the expanded reach and resources at my disposal, I found myself in a position to extend assistance to an even larger audience. The ability to contribute to the wellbeing and success of many has been a source of immense satisfaction and fulfilment. Can you share a specific accomplishment or project that you are particularly proud of in your professional journey? There are recent accomplishments that I am particularly proud of. Firstly, I had the privilege of contributing to GT Motive’s success in establishing itself as a formidable presence within the UK. It’s incredibly gratifying to see that our efforts have led to GT Motive being recognised as the estimating system of choice for the past three years. In addition, I am both shocked and deeply honoured to have been bestowed with the 2023 ABP Night of Knights award. This recognition is truly humbling, and I feel a profound sense of pride to be counted among the esteemed group of individuals who have received this accolade in the past. The knowledge that I share this honour with previous winners, whom I hold in high regard, makes it all the more special. However, as I stood in the room among so many other accomplished individuals during the award ceremony, I couldn’t help but realise the wealth of talent and dedication present. It became evident that each person in that room was deserving of recognition, making the accomplishment even more meaningful. How did the opportunity with the RMI come about, and what motivated you to take on this role? Following the departure of the previous Executive Director, I was approached by several of my peers who suggested that I consider applying for the position. Their encouragement and the faith they expressed in me prompted me to seriously contemplate this opportunity. Realising the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on an industry I am passionate about and serve the NBRA - VBRA members prompted me to embrace the challenge. My goal is to move the association forward, strengthen its position, and foster a community where industry professionals thrive and collaborate. 6

In what ways do you believe your previous experiences have prepared you for the challenges and responsibilities of this position? Working with diverse businesses, from singlesite operations to large groups, provided insights into challenges at various levels. Understanding different business perspectives is essential in effectively addressing upcoming challenges. My network of businesses and friends, cultivated over the years, serves as a valuable resource for guidance. The collective knowledge within this community will be instrumental in navigating my new position What values do you prioritise in your work, and how do you plan to instil these values within the NBRA? For me, loyalty and friendship are not just words; they are the guiding principles that shape my approach to professional relationships. I am a firm believer that if the NBRA - VBRA can embody these same values and deliver them consistently to all our members, we have the potential to evolve into a cohesive family. Commitment to loyalty and friendship in representation and support aims to create an environment where every member feels heard, supported, and part of a larger community. What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities facing the vehicle repair industry in the UK today? The primary concern demanding immediate attention within our industry is the critical shortage of young talent. This challenge requires collective efforts from all stakeholders, and I am committed to addressing it proactively. The critical shortage of young talent demands immediate attention. Collaborative efforts and proactive strategies are essential. Initiatives like Dave Reece’s School of Thought and AutoRaise are commendable, but additional measures are needed. Addressing the skills shortage collectively and intensifying efforts to promote the industry across schools and colleges are crucial. Collaboration with other sectors and supporting existing initiatives can elevate the issue on the broader agenda. I am open to exploring additional strategies, partnerships, and avenues to attract and nurture young talent. Together, we can significantly impact

the industry’s future and ensure its sustainability. How do you plan to address these challenges and leverage opportunities to benefit NBRA members? Collaborating with associations already engaged with the government on related matters can effectively communicate industry challenges. Encouraging more repairers to take on apprentices and creating awareness about the rewards of mentorship and apprenticeships are crucial. Joint presence at career and trade shows with industry partners can amplify the message. Exploring additional strategies, partnerships, and avenues to attract and nurture young talent is essential. How do you envision strengthening the connection between the NBRA and its members under your leadership? Establishing regular and consistent communication channels, including newsletters

and a members’ magazine, will keep members informed. Collaborating with supplier partners to introduce innovative solutions will demonstrate commitment to supporting members’ success. Utilizing social media for broader outreach and transparent communication principles will build trust and reinforce the association’s strong bond with its members. What are your long-term goals and aspirations for the NBRA? The long-term goal is to significantly grow membership and position the association as a formidable force in the industry. Aiming for a membership of 2000, the objective is to create a dynamic and influential presence. Initiatives focusing on tangible benefits, networking opportunities, and industry insights aim to strengthen the association’s appeal and make it the go-to destination for professionals in the field.

Congratulations to all the winners of the Greener Body Shop Awards (GBSA)! We extend our heartfelt appreciation to each winner for their outstanding efforts and commitment to sustainability in their respective categories. Michael Wicks, our National Business Development Manager, has been dedicatedly involved in personally presenting the awards to each deserving recipient who wasn’t able to attend the recent awards event. His involvement underscores the significance of your achievements and the positive impact your efforts have on the environment. We commend your commitment to sustainability and the positive changes you are making in your industry. Your dedication to creating a greener and more environmentally friendly business sets an inspiring example for others to follow. Thank you for being leaders in the sustainability journey and for contributing to a healthier, more eco-conscious future. We look forward to seeing the continued success and growth of your environmentally responsible initiatives. Once again, congratulations to all the winners of the Greener Body Shop Awards! 7

Empowering Commercial Repairers: VBRA’s 2023 Initiatives In the dynamic landscape of commercial vehicle repairs, the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA) continues to be a driving force, spearheading innovation and setting new standards for the industry. The 2023 edition of Elite Truck and VBRA has experienced substantial growth, capturing the attention of both service providers and repairers eager to align with these elevated standards. This surge of interest not only underscores a dedication to safety but also opens avenues for Elite Truck Members to explore the benefits the standard brings. An exceptional initiative within the Elite Truck framework is the development of a specialised training course by Bret Maycock, the Managing Director of Bremco Ltd. This course, featuring an end-point assessment accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), is exclusively focused on commercial vehicles. Bremco goes above and beyond by conducting workshop equipment audits and aiding businesses in implementing cost-effective twist-pull chassis alignment. The education provided includes the qualification to expertly straighten chassis, a highly soughtafter skill when executed with precision.

The VBRA’s commitment extends beyond commercial body repair to encompass the critical sector of Body Builders. With Martin Shepard as the specialist subject matter expert, members receive invaluable assistance with Type Approval issues and general body building inquiries. Gerry Braddock’s expertise in managing body repair methods for vans and chassis cabs up to 5.0 tonnes addresses specific needs, accessible through the method request form on the VBRA website.

8

In 2023, the VBRA has actively nurtured relationships to encourage young talent to join the sector. Tom Hudd’s participation in various events, along with Dave Reece from School of Thought and Jason Mole from CarComm, has played a pivotal role in achieving this goal. A notable achievement is the introduction of dedicated Truck & Bus Electric Vehicle (EV) training, facilitated by reputable organizations such as GTG Training, EV Automotive Training, Logistics UK Ltd, REVAMP Training Company Ltd, and Renault Trucks. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Logistics UK over 18 months, is particularly crucial as commercial vehicles increasingly incorporate multiple EV systems, setting them apart from their light vehicle counterparts.

The VBRA’s commitment to recognizing excellence is evident in its support for the Greener Bodyshop Awards. Commercial repairers CarComm, Sparshatts, and D Gawthrope ARC, who took the spotlight this year, received welldeserved accolades. The association eagerly anticipates welcoming more commercial repairers and body builders to the awards in 2024.

CarComm’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its continuous investment in cuttingedge technology and facility enhancements. In 2015, the company installed 600 solar panels, taking a proactive step towards environmentally responsible operations. The focus on sustainability extends to collaborations with industry partners like Junair and AGM Services.

In November 2022, AGM Services alerted Junair about CarComm’s interest in enhancing efficiency and reducing energy costs. This collaboration resulted in a meticulous survey of CarComm’s paintshop building, leading to the strategic replacement of aging equipment with state-of-the-art alternatives. The new booths, equipped with energy-saving features, are projected to significantly reduce operating costs, showcasing a commitment to both financial prudence and environmental responsibility. AGM Services, a leader in spray booth aftercare, plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing CarComm’s equipment. The Optimal Energy Upgrade Pack, featuring LED lighting and auxiliary air movement systems, contributes to substantial energy savings. AGM’s holistic approach ensures that CarComm’s equipment not only meets industry standards but also aligns with their sustainability goals. ECA Business Energy, an independent energy and carbon specialist, has been a long-term partner in CarComm’s journey towards sustainability. From energy procurement and bill validation to carbon compliance and reporting, ECA Business Energy provides comprehensive support. Their collaboration, initiated in 2017, 9

has evolved to include efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality, with CarComm successfully attaining carbon-neutral status in March 2023. The results of these sustainability initiatives are not only evident in reduced energy consumption but also recognized by industry accolades. CarComm Coachworks proudly received the Carbon Footprint (Commercial) Award, Charity Award, and Gold in the Greener Bodyshop Award category at the NBRA and VBRA Commercial Greener Bodyshop Awards 2023. These prestigious awards acknowledge CarComm’s outstanding achievements and innovations in creating a cleaner and greener future within the Vehicle Repair industry. Jason Mole, Managing Director of CarComm Coachworks Ltd, expressed his pride in these achievements, emphasizing the company’s dedication to a better future for their people, the local community, and the planet. As they continue to lead by example, CarComm’s tireless efforts towards a cleaner and greener future make them not just an industry leader but a catalyst for positive change in the commercial vehicle repair landscape.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of CarComm Coachworks, Junair, AGM Services, and ECA Business Energy showcase a harmonious blend of industry excellence, sustainability, and community engagement. Together, these companies exemplify a commitment to driving positive change, setting new standards in commercial vehicle repairs that go beyond industry norms.

With demand now at an all-time high, they have revolutionised this service with their new specialist mobile diamond-cut alloy wheel repair vans. Introduced in late 2023, this service is already proving to be a game-changer for the motor trade, allowing dealer groups to offer an onsite same-day diamond-cut alloy wheel repair service to their customers to boost their profits. The same-day service provides an instant fix for their customers, avoiding the loss of a car for three days whilst the repair is being made. With demand for the service growing, expansion is already planned for 2024 with fifteen more mobile diamond-cut alloy wheel repair vans allowing Automotive Repair Systems to offer more coverage to dealer groups across the country.

DIAMOND-CUT ALLOY WHEEL REPAIR Automotive Repair Systems first ventured into the world of diamond-cut alloy wheels in 2014, and the service became so popular that a complete upgrade in equipment was required that would make the system semi-automated to increase throughput whilst providing a high quality finish. 13

Glue Pull Repair: A Sustainable Solution in the Collision Repair Industry In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainability across the collision repair industry. Glue Pull Repair (GPR) has emerged as a remarkable innovation that not only enhances efficiency and effectiveness but also promotes sustainability.

There is now a System for everyone;

What Are Sustainability Benefits of Glue Pull Repair?

KECO L2E Glue Pull Repair Collision System KECO’s L2E is the most comprehensive glue pull repair system available to body shop technicians. This system includes the industry’s best lifting tools, a powerful KECO shop light, and GPR tool cart. This the only option for those looking for a complete GPR solution to improve shop efficiency.

1. Reduced Material Usage: Traditional dent repair methods often involve the use of body filler and paint, which consume a significant amount of resources. Glue Pull Repair reduces the need for these materials, resulting in a substantial reduction in waste and environmental impact. This leads to lower energy consumption and fewer emissions associated with painting and curing.

KECO L2E Glue Pull Repair Collision System (Compact). KECO’s L2E Compact System boasts the same components as the L2E, with added flexibility and mobility. The most comprehensive glue pull repair system is now available in a smaller cart, allowing for ease of movement throughout the shop. Finish your repairs fast with minimal, if any, body filler.

2. Minimal Waste Generation: GPR generates significantly less waste compared to conventional repair methods. With no need for extensive sanding, painting, or disposing of hazardous materials, the environmental footprint of the repair process is greatly diminished.

KECO GPR RoughOut System with Compact Shop Cart. The KECO RoughOut glue pull repair system allows technicians to repair medium to large damage. This system contains all the items necessary to achieve basic pulls that will ultimately require additional work and body filler to finish.

3. Energy Efficiency: The use of glue pulling for dent repair is an energy-efficient approach. By reducing the need for ovens and paint booths to cure paint, Glue Pull Repair contributes to lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Cost Savings: Sustainability and costeffectiveness often go hand in hand. Glue Pull Repair’s reduced material usage, lower labour requirements and efficient processes can translate to lower repair costs for vehicle owners and insurers. Glue Pull Repair has proven itself to be a sustainable solution within the collision repair industry. Its environmentally friendly approach, which reduces material consumption, waste generation, and energy usage, aligns with the global shift towards sustainability. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it’s important that collision repair methods keep pace, and Glue Pull Repair is a prime example of how innovation can benefit not only the economy but the environment as well. At Keco, we have recently unveiled an entire new line-up of GPR Systems.

KECO GPR Technician Companion System with Shop Cart. The Technician Companion Kit is intended to cover a smaller percentage of collision shop repairs to work in unison with L2E Collision System. This allows technicians to work from the central L2E for larger tools and address a smaller percentage of damage with the satellite Technician Companion Kit. KECO GPR Finish System with Compact Shop Cart. KECO’s Finish Glue Pull Repair System carries all the tools, tabs, and modularity to work towards flat finish GPR repairs. The addition of the Finish System completes an L2E toolset and system, where the RoughOut Collision System stops. KECO GPR+ System with Mobile Cart. The GPR+ System adds on to your L2E to extend the repair system to correct damage further up the Repair Continuum. With the added tools the GPR+ System carries, technicians will be able to glue pull and push to paint with ease. This system is intended to complement glue pull repair and allow technicians to make more challenging repairs possible with the utmost efficiency. 17

BODY REPAIR

Not one but two major changes for truck and van body repairers, with the launch of a new commercial vehicle standard, and the revision of another light vehicle standard. Will Dalrymple reports

T

he process to develop the first standard for commercial vehicle repair began before the pandemic, according to Thomas Hudd, national technical manager at vehicle body repair trade association NBRA. He says: “A number of influential truck body repairers met to discuss how car repairers have had a higher profile and greater retention than those in the truck world. We felt that they were getting more recognition because of BS10125. And there was no formal standard for CV body repair, which includes trucks and vans of medium volume, buses and coaches. “One of the issues we’re facing is that some accident management and insurance companies want to put commercial vehicles into light body shops, where the rates are lower, but the shops don’t have the competencies – nor do they have the equipment, jigs and high-roof paint ovens.” He expands on that point: “Truck workshops are entirely different to car and van workshops – different equipment, different attitudes, different staff, and in some cases different requirements for training. There are different sizes of ovens and cab jigs. There are different technologies, such as air brakes on commercials. There is no specific method agreed for [repair of] the ladder chassis; that requires specialist knowledge.” Adds Gerry Braddock, national manager of NBRA subsidiary, VBRA Commercial: “We want to avoid the situation that some people find

DOUBLE

themselves in now where the truck comes in for repair, the company that it has gone into knows they can’t do it, so subcontracts the work. Or they don’t repair it properly.” Two body repair competence standards currently exist: BS10125, for light vehicles up to 5t gvw, which is currently in revision (see below), and the coach builder trade-specific route through the Level 3 bus and coach engineering technician apprenticeship (which is also being reviewed). As to the latter, Braddock contends that commercial vehicle body repair competencies were not properly considered when the trailblazer bus and coach apprenticeship was being developed. “The bus and coach industry rode roughshod over everyone else to get what they wanted. Neither do we have a bodybuilder standard.” Aiming to help bridge the gap is a new truck body repair standard, VBRA Elite. This defines minimum competences and organises qualifications for individuals in structural repair (chassis and cab) of trucks and

vans. Four qualifications are available: Truck & Van repair (structural with cab and chassis repair); Truck repair (structural with cab and chassis repair); Van repair (structural with chassis repair); Truck & Van (non-structural). “With this, we’re able to give transparency as to what the repairer can do, and can release information to insurance and fleet managers,” adds Hudd. The standard sets out the requirements for competence based on qualifications given by the three principal awarding bodies in the sector: IMI, City & Guilds and GQA. In addition, VBRA Elite also includes the online database to track them, thanks to a collaboration with bodywork training company ITAS, which already manages the approved bodyshop programme for passenger car OEMs including Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Toyota. “That enables someone who has undergone training, or wants to become an elite member, to download information on to one platform. recalibration. Every document goes on there,” explains Hudd. Certificates are marked with an expiry date. VBRA will take on the responsibility of the audit itself, drawing partly from the online platform, but also carrying out a physical visit and walk-around inspection of the facilities. As of July, the first company to be accredited against the scheme was said to be D Gawthrope ACR of Knottingley, West Yorkshire. LIGHT VEHICLE EVOLUTION Meanwhile, changes are coming to the light vehicle standard, too. The review of BS10125, Automotive services, Specification for vehicle damage repair processes, has passed the point of a public consultation, which closed in June, with an expectation of finishing the process toward the end of the year. But according to Mark Armitage, IMI head of member products and services, no changes are imminent; once the standard is published, an 18-month to two-year transition period kicks in to allow industry time to adapt. He highlights significant changes including the inclusion of lots of detail about EVs (and hydrogen vehicles) as well as ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems, which rely on a number of body-mounted sensors, including on the windscreen). “The

standard is not just to keep up with today’s technologies as to plan ahead for future technologies that are turning up in bodyshops,” he observes. So seriously is the industry taking those issues that the standard will require all repair technicians to have high voltage and ADAS awareness training. Hudd at NBRA praised that development, which is also picked up in the VBRA Elite qualification. He says that such competences are vital to safeguard technicians and ensure that they are keeping vehicles operating safely on the roads. Hudd recalls: “One bodybuilder who I was speaking with mentioned that he was involved in a conversion of a hybrid electric vehicle. I asked him how many certified technicians he has. He said that they had none. But the electrics regulations that everyone in the country has to conform to indicate that if something goes wrong, that company is looking at corporate manslaughter. “We don’t want any injuries. Those repairers are not competent to work on these vehicles. And ADAS is vitally important also. There needs to be an audit trail about what they’ve done [training-wise], to make sure they put them back on the road as the manufacturer requires.” The new BS10125 standard also clarifies how to conduct repairs when a defined method may not yet be available

BODY REPAIR

from a manufacturer, and about the use of green (validated used) parts on a vehicle, which is allowed provided that they are fit for purpose. In terms of competence, it does not change the entry point for qualification – an apprenticeship or recognised assessment to check skills and knowledge – but now references the new apprenticeship standards in England, which means that employers will be able to access Apprenticeship Levy funding (or co-investment) to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment. But the biggest changes are in the way that the roles are considered. Armitage explains: “For many years, standards and competence has focused on job role, as one of four job roles: panel technician, paint technician, MET – mechanical, electrical and trim – and damage assessor. Through consultation reviews with employers and conversations with individuals working in these bodyshops, it was clear that a greater level of flexibility of work would be better to prepare the workforce,

20 14

ensuring it is best-placed to meet business needs.” Now, gone are the four roles to be replaced with 18 key repair activities (one example might be welding of steel – see box for full list). Each of those has been broken down in relation to the competence expected to perform the minimum required activity level, combining knowledge and ability. Over a three-year window (which starts from initial qualification), individuals and employers will review the subject areas for which the individual carries out work in the bodyshop and agree a CPD, continuous professional development, plan, and these are the areas that he/she focuses on. “The qualification was previously more restrictive, because it was organised by job role. A painter/ refinisher in the past was just doing the painting element in competence discussions. Now they are able to add other elements. Likewise, previously all MET had to undertake steering suspension geometry assessment every

three years. But that may not always be required for the business, so there is the opportunity to flex.” That conversation is supported by certification bodies that monitor and police adherence, by training providers that support the employer (and which would also be assessed by awarding bodies such as IMI), and through assessments. In terms of assessments, in some cases where the repair subject is seen as non safetycritical, the assessment method can be knowledgeonly: an exam. Where the matter is safety-critical, such as welding or working on high-voltage, there is also a practical assessment where an individual’s skills ability is assessed as part of CPD. Armitage argues that the change in competence offers a fresh approach to skills. “A good thing is that CPD provides ongoing training, and keeps competence up to date on a more regular basis, which is what people really like. If you go to the highest level of looking at employers and how they manage the workforce, retaining talent is a key focus for employers right now. This approach supports that in how they can provide development plans for staff.” He says that IMI has used a similar CPD competence structure for its TechSafe qualification for technicians working on electric vehicles and ADAS systems. Armitage adds that, although IMI won’t provide the training itself, it also wants to foster innovation in the way it is delivered, and moving beyond face-to-face instruction. He includes as examples e-learning to remote classroom delivery. “CPD could be more organically done in workplaces instead of taking people off of the tools and making them travel,” he says.

We know the industry is rapidly evolving which is why our experienced ATA-accredited technical team is in constant communication with end users to understand what their job requirements are and the type of products and processes they are looking for. and services we provide to stay at the cutting edge of technological advances in the sector. The business has invested heavily in training programmes for bodyshops enabling them to increase the menu of services they can offer while boosting efficiency, productivity and profitability, and reducing key-to-key times. Our training programme is customisable, so it focuses on the specific areas that are relevant to the business and the jobs that come through their doors on a day-to-day basis. When it comes to the location of the training, we leave that in the hands of the business. However, our technical team knows there are benefits to running the courses on-site or at our training centre in Milton Keynes. For on site, we find that the customer has the familiarity with their usual surroundings, which enables us to highlight how their own specific products or processes would work in an environment they are familiar with. When we take the training away from the workshop floor to our training centre, participants can take part in e-learning and classroombased learning in advance of the course, before having their hands-on experience.

To complement the training, there are regular physical audits of the business to ensure the repairer is maximising the efficiencies of the products and abrasives they use, which enables us to show where cost savings can be made. There is also an action plan that covers best practice, which include specific processes for jobs or the recommendation of certain products for the business based on the surfaces being sanded. Ridgeway Technologies to offer BDQ estimating systems to NBRA members No transaction fees | Free website plug-in | Free trial

With some 200 active customer sites, spanning small repairers, large insurance bodyshops and franchised bodyshops and dealerships, BDQ is proving a popular choice of estimating system for smaller repairers as well as for larger bodyshops, who want to increase their retail capture. Body Damage Quote is an established system carrying Thatcham Research repair and paint data and an OE parts database – available on a fixed monthly subscription. The system is fully online, without any requirement for installs or downloads, runs on any device and links to both EMACS and Autoflow.

BDQ Customer comments: “Our front of house team has been using the BDQ system now for about two years. We use it to quickly quote for our walk-in customers, which then reduces some of the burden on the VDAs. We find it helps the customer decide on retail or insurance work and essentially if they want to proceed with the repairs. It’s really quick and simple to compile an estimate with labour, materials and parts prices auto generated. It’s easy to use, quite an impressive little system and would recommend it to other sites.” Simon Morgan Fix Auto Manchester East

24

BDQ Lite is an intelligent menu-pricing module, used by a number of main dealer groups and with manufacturer approvals, which can plug into a bodyshop’s website and Facebook page to enable consumers to price up their own damage and is a great tool for capturing and converting retail opportunities. Sheila Bradley at Ridgeway is happy to offer online demos and trials: “I’m always available for an online demo if someone is interested in just taking a quick look at the system. We’re also happy to offer NBRA members a free trial of the system.” Sheila can be contacted at sheila. bradley@ridgewaytechnologies.co.uk

“BDQ, and without a doubt their back up support, has totally changed our business in the last 3 years. No more hanging on the phone for parts departments or waiting for a call back. Using this system allows us to generate the estimate in front of the customer, explain all the repair times and for a major majority get them booked in before they leave the premises. All major insurance companies have accepted the estimate times and now we’re really making good money on paint and materials. Absolute game changer for us. Thanks Sheila and the BDQ team” Keith Miles Bumpers Bodyshop

Tom Rumboll, Chief Executive Officer of SYNETIQ and UK Managing Director: Shaping our workforce for the future We recognise that times are changing and as a business we need to futureproof ourselves to remain one step ahead. This means ensuring our sites, equipment and our workforce also move with the times. Skills gap is a hot topic within the industry with the main causes being the introduction of new technologies and of course, electric vehicles. Such changes have brought with them a whole host of new ways of working and skills that are needed. Results from a recent Department of Education’s Employee Skills Survey are concerning as they reveal an increasing skills gap within the UK in comparison to previous years (5.7%, up from 4.4% in 2017). The survey also showed an increase in the number of employers reporting that they had at least one employee who was not fully proficient in their role. Now is the time we should all be upskilling and investing in development opportunities to help identify training needs and prevent the skills gap from growing. This is what we’ve set out to achieve at SYNETIQ. Our colleagues are our most valuable asset, and we recognise the need to upskill them from within, not just for business needs, but for their own personal growth. We’ve put a big focus on developing our current workforce by analysing what skills they need for the future. We recently rolled out our Leadership and Development Programme where our monthly training modules are designed to give our colleagues the tools, skills and knowledge to do their jobs to the very best of their abilities. This then ensures we’re doing the very best for our clients and customers.

28

We are also the first UK vehicle recycler to complete an Institute of Motor Industryaccredited course in EV dismantling. Produced and written by Salvage Wire, the series of training sessions were our next step in preparing our workforce for the future of electric vehicles. Preparation is key and we acknowledge that we must also bring in and attract new talent to strengthen our workforce further. Apprenticeships form an integral part of our people strategy, which includes a strong focus on offering learning and development opportunities for the next generation as well as our existing colleagues. We were the first in our industry to introduce a Metal Recycling General Operative apprenticeship and we’ve found it to be a great solution for preventing any potential skills gap. Change doesn’t have to be difficult - it can be positive and exciting. Yes, it is different and will need time and investment, but the future opens the doors to new ways of working and gives you the means to work more efficiently. It also provides colleagues t
