A

s we approach the conclusion of 2023, shall we collectively rejoice in this remarkable year of momentous triumphs that were achieved by NBASLH's membership? Let us count the triumphs: 1. Marking the introduction of our new publication format for RESOUND))), our Spring 2023 issue solemnly saluted the Founders of NBASLH, including living legends Mr. Eugene Wiggins and Dr. Orlando Taylor who were featured on our cover.

2. Then, in our Special Summer Double Issue, we exulted in the historic success of NBASLH's 45th Annual Convention, masterfully led by Joy Lennon and Shauntelle Cannon-Williams, while honoring the "Passing of the Torch" from Kia Johnson to Brittani Hightower as Chair of NBASLH's Board of Directors.

3. In this Winter issue of RESOUND))), our final one for 2023, we celebrate NBASLH's inaugural Cultural Humility Conference (CHC), with keynote speaker Kyomi Gregory-Martin gracing our cover. Our Guest Co-Editor is Prof. MaShyllia Minor, who, in addition to serving as a member of NBASLH's Cultural Humility Task Force (CHTF) and co-organizer of the virtual CHC, is also a member of our RESOUND))) Committee. In this issue, she has elevated her role by bestowing her Cultural Humility wisdom all over these pages!

hank you, Dr. Postman and the RESOUND))) Committee, for generously encouraging me to support our beloved RESOUND))) in this “elevated” way. As Dr.

Postman stated, I am a member of both the NBASLH CHTF and RESOUND))) committees. Active engagement in both Committees has afforded me the opportunity to expand my perspective about cultural humility and to understand the level of significance RESOUND))) holds in the community as the official voice of NBASLH. I joined the NBASLH CHTF, conceptualized by Dr. Kyomi GregoryMartin, at its inception following the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

Thoughts troubled me after the sensationalization of the murder. The significant questions I asked myself were: “What was I to do about it?” “How will I gain knowledge and impart influence about dignity-honoring practices within my sphere of influence?” and, “How will I move the cultural prescriptive needle?”

The issues that burdened me were: 1) the lack of respect and demonization of Rachel Jeantel and her testimony during the trial of the murder of Trayvon Martin; 2) parents being coached into requesting special education referrals for nefarious reasons; 3) standardized testing practices that further marginalize Black communities; 4) lack of opportunities; and 5) health care disparities impacting access to quality health care by people of color. I was ready, and the NBASLH CHTF was my solution.

Under the leadership of Dr. Amy Hobek, the NBASLH CHTF has designed a menu* of learning opportunities that intend to broaden the scope of cultural humility and what it means to be a student, practitioner, and instructor in the field of communication sciences and disorders (CSD). From the NBASLH

CHTF, the Cultural Humility Ambassadors’ Program (CHAP), led by Dr. Dani Scott, was created to hold members accountable for holding up the cultural humility armor. The inaugural NBASLH CHTF’s virtual CHC is, still, another sample on Dr. Hobek’s *menu.

In this issue, we make a valiant effort to highlight the vibrant, poignant, and critical dialogue that occurred during the CHC. From the introduction and opening keynote speaker’s message until the closing remarks, the encounter was fulfilling. The significance of cultural humility as a perpetual and ever evolving journey, and not a destination, was reiterated. The speakers prioritized the audience; the audience connected to the cause, and the CHTF and facilitators moved the crowd. My bias is showing, no doubt, but the CHC was phenomenally satisfying.

Reflect and enjoy the articles and submissions from the NBALSH CHTF. I hope the Winter issue of our beloved RESOUND))) fills you with pride as we bring to life the inaugural CHTF’s virtual CHC.

Note from the

CHAIRPERSON Greetings Members of NBASLH,

I

am honored to write to you as your new Chair of the Board of Directors. For those who I haven’t met yet, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a native Houstonian who ventured to Washington, DC to pursue my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Howard University. I currently practice as a school–based SLP in central Texas. I first joined the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) as a graduate student in 2013.

Since then, I have served as a member of the Board of Directors, chair of NBASLH Cares, Parliamentarian, chair of the Bylaws Committee, and now Chair of the Board. I consider it an honor and privilege to have served and continue to serve NBASLH in a leadership capacity. I understand what being Chair of the Board of Directors for NBASLH means, and will strive to uphold the standard and honor the legacy of this role.

NBASLH’s history and legacy inspire me to be the best leader I can be. My vision for NBASLH is to hold true to the founding principles while continuing to make strides to maintain our relevance in the present and future.

Since embracing the role of Chair in September, NBASLH has been doing great things, i.e., hosting our first Cultural Humility Conference (CHC), launching the Cultural Humility Ambassador’s Program (CHAP), and embarking on a journey to South Africa with Nanda Journeys. Also, our membership has surpassed 1000 members, and our Committees’ activities have positively increased. We shared a booth with the

Multicultural Constituency Groups (MCCGs) at the 2023 ASHA Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, from which several of our members shared about NBASLH throughout the Convention. Plus, of course, we hosted our 5th Annual Mixer at ASHA, for which all of the tickets were given away by 1 p.m. on the first day of the Convention! I know our Committees have been hard at work, and I am excited to see what the next quarter has in store for NBASLH.

This April, we will host our 46th annual Convention in Raleigh, NC. This year’s theme is: “The Essence of NBASLH: Research, Mentorship, and Advocacy”. Our Convention Co-chairs and the Convention Committee have been diligently working to ensure we have a phenomenal experience. If you have not registered or booked your hotel room, I encourage you to do so. You won’t want to miss it!

As NBASLH continues to move in a positive direction, I encourage you to get involved with one (or more) of our 17 committees, or consider donating to the Community of Black Excellence in Scholarship – NBASLH’s financial commitment to diversifying the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology by providing scholarships to students.

The History of the

Cultural Humility Task Force (CHTF) and the Path to the

Cultural Humility Conference (CHC)

he year 2020 was a critical point in the growth of the National Black Association for Speech-Language Hearing (NBASLH). Everyone was discussing the intersection between COVID-19, health disparities, and George Floyd’s killing, and the impact these issues had on Black communities; moreso, the NBASLH members wanted and needed to discuss how many of these critical issues have impacted and continue to impact Black SLPs. Therefore, we launched the platform “NBASLH Talks”.

This platform acted as a springboard from which we further launched a 4-part series called “Speak Up and Speak Out”. Finally, through this series, we began the healing of an, seemingly, open wound where we could

even discuss inequities and injustices that occur within the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) profession.

It was at this critical point that we realized that “visibility is a statement.” The series included three panel discussions entitled: (1) “The Climate of Racism Then and Now”; (2) ”Interprofessional Perspectives: Is it Just me?”; and (3) ”So What? Now What? Ways to Get Involved”. The final session was a seminar that I led entitled “Moving from Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility.” The workshops lasted from June to August 2020. Then it happened: In August 2020, the Cultural Humility Task Force (CHTF) was born. It’s about pedagogy and transformation, i.e., how we view the field of speech-language pathology.

The concepts of “diversity”, “equity”, “inclusion”, “justice”, and “belonging” finally could be viewed, separately, and then,collectively, because they are infused in everything that we do.

The goal from the beginning was to have a cultural humility certification program.

From 2020 to 2021, I led the CHTF, and we devised some key terminology and our mission. In the Fall of 2021, however, Amy Hobek became the chair when I stepped down. Between 2021 to 2023, we discussed our mission and purpose. In 2023, we launched the Cultural Humility Ambassador Program (CHAP), and in October 2023, we launched our first annual Cultural Humility Conference (CHC). This was not an accident or a coincidence. The CHC was years in the making, but the work does not stop

here! Since our goal is cultural humility and culturally sustaining practices, the CHC was one-of-a-kind in that it embodied all these principles. The four primary skills of cultural humility include: (1) openness, (2) self-awareness, (3) egolessness, and (4) supportive interactions, according to Tervalon & Murray-Garcia (1998). With cultural humility comes the ability for clinicians to ask themselves many questions. I walked away from the CHC thinking about the following questions: Am I open to cultural identities that are different from my own? Do I recognize the strengths and needs of my own culture? Am I able to be humble and listen to other professionals to compromise on a care plan that is patient-centered? And, finally, am I able to engage in interprofessional interactions that place my clients at the forefront, even if it means not making decisions solely based on my skill set? I leave all of you with these questions and hope that you will consider joining the CHTF, or becoming a Cultural Humility Ambassador. Trust me, the work does not stop here! For change to be made in this profession, it requires an all-hands-ondeck attitude. I really hope you are ready for the challenge. 

Virtual Cultural Humility Conference (CHC)

hroughout the inaugural virtual Cultural Humility Conference (CHC), I was struck by the presenters’ knowledge, skill, and passion for their work, as well as their deep commitment to being agents of change within the profession. Additionally, the variety of topics covered during the CHC was remarkable.

and I have a lot to unlearn!

There truly was an abundance of inspiration and knowledge to be gained by all in attendance. Every session I attended allowed me to acquire knowledge and develop skills related to my work as an ally, a disruptor, a supervisor, a leader, an educator, a researcher, a team member, and a speech-language pathologist. There were many “aha” moments throughout the CHC that led me to one critical realization: Unlearning is a thing,

Cultural competence requires a commitment to lifelong learning. One facilitator to new learning that may be overlooked is the concept of unlearning. Actively working to unlearn habits, beliefs, skills, and methods that have been acquired throughout our lives may allow for a rapid shift toward new learning. The concept of unlearning struck me as obvious; it seemed like I should have known this already, as though it was a missing piece to the puzzle. New learning, along with unlearning, will be a part of my ongoing journey, especially as it relates to cultural humility. The virtual CHC of 2023 was amazing! I am grateful to all of the presenters and my fellow Task Force members! 

Teamwork Makes the

dream work!

he Cultural Humility Task Force (CHTF) successfully launched its Cultural Humility Ambassador Program (CHAP) and the first annual (virtual) Cultural Humility Conference in October! The work for this programming began three years ago, in November of 2020, when the CHTF was formed by NBASLH with Kyomi GregoryMartin leading the charge. As the CHTF began building its member base, goals were developed to begin planning for the Committee’s efforts.

The CHTF established its initial mission: to conduct an event every two to three months, and to establish a cultural humility certificate program. In February 2019, the CHTF held its inaugural CE event, “Diverse Books Matter'', led by Lakeisha Johnson. This presentation was held, virtually, and was moderated by CHTF member, Dani Scott. It was a well received presentation with Dr. Johnson passionately speaking about the impact of using culturally responsive books in intervention with children.

In the fall of 2021, Kyomi Gregory-Martin provided much mentorship and support as I began facilitating the CHTF’s continued efforts. The CHTF established a working definition of cultural humility as a foundation for future events, and continued to conceptualize the cultural humility certificate program. On October 20, 2022 the CHTF held its second virtual CE event, “A Commitment to Cultural Humility: Intersectional Health Justice through Gender Affirming Care'' via a panel discussion. The panelists included the expertise of Danielle Davore, RaMonda Horton, Gregory Robinson, and Betty Yu, with CHTF moderators MaShyllia Minor and Dani Scott. This was a dynamic session with panelists answering questions around concepts of cultural humility, intersectionality, and gender affirming care.

Both of these CE events took efforts from everyone on the Committee working in the background to support the success of these presentations. After this event, the CHTF put all of their efforts toward developing a program in which NBASLH members and other audiologists and speech-language pathologists could work towards developing their cultural humility, while receiving some sort of recognition for their efforts. The idea of a certificate was the initial vision, but as the CHTF continued to meet monthly and discuss our intended outcomes, the Committee realized that, if we wanted to stand by cultural humility as meaning continuous life-long learning, then we couldn’t have a certificate that might imply that the journey could have an end-point through a certifying process.

This is where the virtual Cultural Humility Conference (CHC) and the Cultural Humility Ambassador Program (CHAP) were conceived.

Throughout the efforts of building this Program and Conference, there was a need for subcommittees to be formed to divide the efforts. The Call-for-Papers subcommittee, the Ambassador Program subcommittee, and the Technology subcommittee were formed. These efforts were coordinated by each of these subcommittees through supportive teamwork and excellent leadership.

There were always additional tasks that needed to be completed, such as reviewing the call-for-papers submissions and ambassador program applications, submitting for CEUs, creating the conference schedule, and building the ambassador schedule and content (to

name a few!) . We continued to meet monthly, or even bimonthly, throughout these three years to be able to bounce ideas off of each other, to support each other’s efforts, and to continue to check off our list of things to do (even when it seemed the list would never end). This team never stopped working. I have never been on a committee (and I have been on a lot of committees!) that has shown this level of commitment and dedication to a cause. These members have put their heart and soul into these programs, and the quality of their work demonstrates their exceptional effort.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to those who were actively involved in seeing these efforts through: Jo Boult, Aiesha Banks, Angela Carey Adams, Stephen Enwefa, Kyomi Gregory-Martin, MaShyllia Minor, Lauren Prather, Dani Scott, and Lianne Thornhill. Past members who also contributed to these efforts that we would like to thank include Jennifer Buff, Lisa Price, and Andi Toliver-Smith.

Additionally, this work could NOT have been done without the talents, skills, and support from Karen Miles, Kia Johnson, Brittani Hightower, and Garvin Romane. I am humbled to be a part of this amazing team of exceptional humans who have represented NBASLH so well in contributing to its mission of community and advocacy for Black professionals, clients, students, and communities.

If the Ally-Ally Shoe Fits:

Running the Social Justice Race Guided by Cultural Humility

A

s social justice activism, associated with the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, resulted in changes to policing policies in some United States (US) cities, in the realm of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) attempted an early, initial “response to racism” that fell grossly short of addressing the magnitude of the problem. A revised Response to Racism policy (ASHA, 2020a) and ASHA’s Envisioned Future (ASHA, 2020b) document were then issued, motivated

It helps that a solid policy infrastructure has been erected. Activist and grassroots organizer Nicole Carty (Carty & Antoun, 2022) reflected on the importance of infrastructure in maintaining social movements. “Movements do lose momentum—people leave the streets, and move on with their lives.

As organizers, we have to build the infrastructure to make movements sustainable.” Guided by assertive and actionable policy documents (on one hand) and knowledge that there are those who are committed to undermining progress (on the other) (Schwartz, 2023), CSD professionals, with intentions to pursue social justice, are left with the ethical and moral question regarding how to do so. Even those with good intentions may fall short of carrying out their bestlaid plans, failing to walk the walk.

To date, in nearly two years of participation on the NBASLH Cultural Humility Task Force (CHTF), I have experienced gratitude for like-minded individuals who are committed to the idea of cultural humility, and for the three-pillars of cultural humility that serve as clear and consistent guideposts. The philosophy of cultural humility has been

a beacon, and the CHTF has been an organizational accountability system that requires its members, via participation, to continue along a path.

As a self-identified white woman, I have noticed myself deviating from that path, falling short of the ideal of true allyship.

A true ally can be thought of as more than just an ally, but rather an ally-ally.* We fall short of true allyship – and slip into performative allyship, aka, virtue signaling, if we are motivated more so by personal needs than a genuine concern for traditionally marginalized groups (Kutlaka & Radke, 2023). Kutlaka and Radke’s (2023) recent work on performative allyship suggests that we fall short of true allyship, if our engagement is easy, visible, and costless. We fall short of true allyship if our actions do not result in any measurable change. Furthermore, although performative allyship may have its benefits, among them increasing awareness of social justice issues and advancing egalitarian values, it also has its drawbacks.

Performative allyship may undermine the well-being and motivation of everyone involved, both the performative ally themselves and the marginalized group members. And like a treatment approach lacking in efficacy data, it wastes the time of the participants when stronger action could have had more beneficial results. The question for the practitioner of performative allyship is, could I have done better and acted more effectively in the pursuit of justice? I’ve learned that this is a question that only the ally can answer for himself or herself. And when

the critique comes from a bystander, it is important to consider the context.

If allyship is criticized as being performative by someone guided by conservative ideology, the motivation is likely a desire to undermine allyship in general –to, generally, demean the effort at allyship and, specifically, to demean any effort to align with a traditionally marginalized person or group. The conservative position is threatened by true allyship, because it undermines traditionally held privilege from which the conservatively situated person likely benefits. To use an analogy, if progressive ideology is akin to running a race, a conservative critic of performative allyship is saying something like, “Ew, why are you running that worthless race? I mean, you don’t even seem to be running at all.

And you must be wearing those shoes just to appeal to the marginalized people who might benefit from you racing.”

On the other hand, coming from someone who is progressive, a fellow ally or a traditionally marginalized person, the criticism is likely meant to inspire more authentic and less performative -- more community-focused and actionable steps toward the progressive movement. To use the race-running analogy once more, it’s akin to saying, “Cute running shoes, but we need more people out here actually running this race.” Depending on which of these ideological positions the critic is guided by, the meaning of the message should land differently.

The social justice activist should be well prepared to respond effectively to either critique.

To the conservative critic, the response could be something like, “I disagree with you about the value of this race. Justicefor-all is a valid and worthy cause. And I am running this race; you cannot tell me I’m not. I have my messy – slow and awkward -- moments, but you’re missing the point if you’re focused on my shoes.

The point is reaching the finish line. And the fact that others benefit is not a bad thing. If justice is withheld from even a few, there is no justice. I want to run a race that is fair. Don’t you?” And to the critique from a fellow-progressive, the response might be, “Thank you for your criticism; yes, my behavior tended toward the performative, but I can and will do more. Guided by cultural humility, I will continue to learn, and continue to critique myself. I will advocate for

individuals and communities to make systemic change, and I will work to redress power imbalances where they occur.”

The more this commitment to cultural humility is reiterated, and the more we walk it out, the more our allyship will manifest itself as allyship-allyship* and not simply performative allyship. *Note that the term ally-ally uses intentional reduplication of the word ally.

Reduplication is a linguistic device used to intensify and, thereby, to validate a word’s meaning, i.e., is she a friend or a friend-friend? Meaning, is she just an acquaintance or a true friend. In this sense, allyship-allyship conveys the meaning of a true allyship. 

Hearing and Speech Science Global Perspectives in Service Program: An Interview with Clinical Assistant Professor Eliza Thompson

hen it comes to programs that promote cultural humility, one clear example is the education abroad program developed and implemented by Assistant Clinical Professor Eliza Thompson at the

University of Maryland, College Park. This educational program provides students with the opportunity to learn and practice cultural humility both in the United States and while abroad in Ghana.

During the summer of 2023, Professor Thompson ,along with Dr. Lacey Curry, an assistant clinical professor and audiologist, and 15 students from the Hearing and Speech Science Department at the University of Maryland College Park, embarked on a trip to Ghana for the inaugural Hearing and Speech Science Global Perspectives in Service Program. Professor Thompson credited the idea to create this education abroad program to her former professor, Dr. Cate Crowley, at the Teacher’s College, Columbia University. In 2010, Professor Thompson accompanied Dr. Crowley to Ghana for a study abroad program. After that trip, she was inspired to develop a similar program.

This program was two years in the making.

Since Professor Thompson is Ghanaian, and often takes trips to Ghana to visit her family, she was able to go there and work directly with partners, organizations, and universities. This allowed her to curate the exact program and experience that she wanted the students to have.

She maintained these partnerships by continuing to communicate with them via zoom meetings and emails while in the United States. As Professor Thompson noted, “This is a capacity building program as we seek to support and build upon the current institutions that are already there. These collaborations led to the program being a success.”

These partnerships and collaborations are also one goal of the program.

Another goal of this program is to enhance students’ understanding of educational and healthcare systems in other countries. Through this experience, Professor Thompson was able to do just that. Before their trip to Ghana, the

students were required to attend multiple lectures and engage in coursework. The lectures and corresponding coursework covered multiple topics, two of which were cultural humility and cultural competence. The students also learned about the state of speech-language pathology globally.

The course and the experiences in Ghana provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the legacy and the impact of colonization in Ghana and other African countries. These learning opportunities offered to the students were another success of the program. As for future programs, Professor Thompson

How do you give people a sense of agency? Talk to them about their needs and their concerns.”

noted, “It was so nice that we had to do it twice.” She is set to take another group of students to Ghana in the Spring of 2024. Professor Thompson is also looking to help support Ghanaian speech therapists through a mentorship network.

The goal is to connect Ghanaian SLTs with American SLPs who can mentor and support them, as speech therapy is such a new field in Ghana. Professor Thompson is also looking at expanding the program to include another country and partnering with another university to offer the Ghana study abroad program. “This will offer UMD students an opportunity to collaborate with other students on projects related to language and literacy and other programmatic needs,” Professor Thompson stated.

She worked diligently to make sure this program met the needs of the community, and also that it reached this goal: For the students to learn to be culturally responsive and practice cultural humility as clinicians. Professor Thompson told the students, “We are not going to Ghana to change them. We are going to adapt to the community.

Adaptability is our purpose; we adapt to the environment in the hopes that, as we adapt to them, we are going to be transformed in the way we approach communication sciences and disorders as a whole.”

n the world of healthcare and academia, diversity and representation are vital for ensuring equitable access to services and the development of inclusive, informed research. In the field of speech pathology and audiology, there's a growing need to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black professionals while addressing the disparities that persist in these disciplines.

The 2024 NBASLH Convention promises to be an amazing event that not only recognizes the accomplishments of Black students and professionals, but also provides a platform for research and excellence in speech language pathology and audiology. We are excited to be returning to Raleigh after a 12 year hiatus; we visited five schools across three days to promote the 2024 NBASLH ConventionECU, NC A&T, NC Central, UNC Greensboro, and UNC Chapel Hill.

The NBASLH Convention is a celebration of excellence, a moment to acknowledge the achievements and significant contributions made by Black individuals in the fields of speech language pathology and audiology. It's an opportunity to highlight the breakthrough research, innovative practices, and outstanding clinical work carried out by these professionals. This recognition is crucial, not only to honor their dedication, but also to inspire the next generation of Black scholars and practitioners.

Beyond celebration, this Convention provides a forum for candid discussions on the persistent disparities in healthcare access, diagnosis, and quality of care for Black individuals. It's a chance to engage in honest dialogues about systemic biases and institutional barriers that continue to impact these communities. By addressing these disparities head-on, the Convention aims to stimulate conversations that lead to concrete action, ultimately fostering a more equitable healthcare system for all.

The Essence Begins Here. A staple of the NBASLH Convention is to empower the next generation of Black professionals in speech language pathology and audiology. It will offer mentorship opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions aimed at nurturing the talents and aspirations of aspiring scholars and practitioners.

By providing guidance and support, the NBASLH Convention will help equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in these fields. Networking is a cornerstone of professional growth, and the “Essence of NBASLH” offers a platform for Black professionals to connect, collaborate, and create lasting personal and professional relationships.

Sharing experiences, research findings, and best practices will not only elevate the careers of attendees, but will also lead to collective efforts to address disparities and advocate for change. Many ask, “Why should I attend the 2024 Essence of NBASLH Convention?” The upcoming NBASLH Convention is a monumental event, poised to make a profound impact on these fields.

It is a celebration of excellence, an opportunity to address disparities, a platform for empowering the next generation, and a space for fostering collaboration and networking. By participating in and supporting this Convention, we move one step closer to a more equitable, inclusive, and vibrant future for speech language pathology and audiology.

The Cultural Humility Ambassador Program (CHAP): An Opportunity to Center Lifelong Introspection, Openness, and Intersectional Justice in Practice

n 2020, as a doctoral student, I had the pleasure of stumbling across the concept of cultural humility while reading Dr. Kyomi GregoryMartin's ASHA Leader article, “From My Perspective/Opinion: Moving Forward as a Profession in a Time of Uncertainty”.

I was very much well-versed in cultural competency, and, intuitively, felt that there were inherent drawbacks, but I did not have theoretical knowledge around those shortcomings. Then, cultural humility met me in the depth of my literature review process, giving me a breath of fresh air and insight. I learned that cultural humility was more about how you do therapy, rather than what you do to provide services to your culturally and linguistically diverse clients.

Cultural humility taught me that the work of learning and unlearning is lifelong, fueled by personal evaluation and curiosity. I should be curious about my clients. I should be concerned about their values and belief systems. I should question the extent to which institutional Summer 2023

inequity or historical mistrust could impede their access to communication services and supports. I should enjoy learning from my clients, rather than learning about my clients, and this learning should sustain the entire length of my career.

Originally developed by Drs. Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-Garcia (1998) to address health disparities and institutional inequities in medicine, cultural humility is now used in health and helping professions. A striking component of cultural humility is the pillar of critical self-reflection. Cultural competency is about acquiring a specific skill set or knowledge base, however cultural humility challenges professionals to explore their own bias and privilege, which has the potential to conflict with engagement and establishing therapeutic relationships with clients and families.

Finally, I appreciated how cultural humility addresses social justice, which is an area that has not been adequately defined within the SLP scope of practice. There is no way to be culturally responsive without being social justice oriented.

The egoless nature of cultural humility calls for professionals to hold institutions accountable for inequity and “isms”, or discriminatory beliefs and behaviors.

With excitement around this new way of seeing the world, I realized that, while the cultural humility terminology was novel to me, it was not new to the National Black Association of Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH).

The NBASLH Cultural Humility Task Force was formed in 2020, and I eagerly joined. At that time, the focus of the task force was to provide professional education around cultural humility, with a long-term goal of developing a cultural humility certificate. I recall nervously moderating our first virtual event in 2020, featuring Dr. Lakeisha Johnson on

utilizing inclusive books, and falling in love with cultural humility all over again.

After this event, we began conversations around developing the certificate, but the more that we discussed the certificate, the more we realized that a certificate is completely antithetical to the concept of cultural humility.

Earning a certificate in cultural humility would insinuate that you could arrive at mastery in cultural humility. This destination does not exist; cultural humility is truly a lifelong endeavor.

Finally, we landed on an experience that would have an intimate, cohort feel, but provide an opportunity for extensive, well-rounded content on cultural humility as it relates to the communication sciences and disorders profession.

Finally, we decided to create and implement the Cultural Humility Conference and Cultural Humility Ambassador Program (CHAP). I committed to serving as the chair of the CHAP subcommittee. In order to get the most robust cultural humility learning experience, we developed the CHAP as a way to engage in all four pillars of cultural humility: lifelong learning, addressed through attending the virtual conference; critical self-reflection, addressed through the pre-conference session and ongoing asynchronous activities to evaluate identities, privilege, and bias; developing mutually beneficial partnerships and redressing power dynamics; and, institutional accountability.

representative of the richly diverse populations we serve. After over a year of planning, it was finally time to publicize our precious learning opportunity and invite members to participate in the CHAP. During the reviewing of applications with my fellow subcommittee members, I was incredibly impressed by the applicants’ statements around cultivating cultural humility, and their goals for implementing new learning into practice. It was very challenging to select a cohort of 10 participants; however, our subcommittee was strategic in our efforts to choose a passionate group and mitigate power imbalances.

We selected a powerful group, varying in clinical/educational experience, expertise, and backgrounds, ranging across the professional spectrum-- the members were joined together by the desire to fully embrace cultural humility and to apply it to their lives and work. The first event of the CHAP was the virtual preconference, “Becoming an Ambassador: Cultural Humility and Critical SelfReflection”. We wanted our Ambassadors to come to the Conference ready to deeply engage in learning, utilizing the collective as support.

I must admit, I was very nervous to lead the pre-conference because I do not consider myself an expert in cultural humility. In fact, I do not believe one can ever be an “expert” in cultural humility.

I wanted the Ambassadors to have the best learning experience possible. In my anxiousness, I made an agreement with myself, not to lead, but to partner with the Ambassadors with vulnerability, sharing my own cultural humility journey, and presenting meaningful content I had gathered along the way.

In addition, we wanted to prepare them for the months ahead that required ongoing self-evaluation. I led the preconference session, which began with, first, defining cultural humility, from both the psychology discipline and healthcare discipline, next, introducing the multicultural orientation and the hallmark Tervalon & Murry-Garcia (1998) definition of cultural humility and, lastly, elaborating

The cohort was introduced to their learning management platform, Google Classroom, where they would engage with one another over the course of the Program. For homework, Ambassadors were asked to create and record their own Cultural Story, to introduce themselves to other cohort mates and to develop an understanding of their own culture, which is the most essential first step of the cultural humility journey.

I was pleasantly impressed with the engagement of the cohort at our preconference. I could feel the genuine, positive energy flow from my computer screen. At the close of the session, an Ambassador asked to share contact information so that we could stay in touch on this journey. That one request alone showed me that this was going to be the beginning of an incredible learning connection. The Cultural

Humility Ambassadors attended the Cultural Humility Conference and will continue with sessions on mutually beneficial partnerships and institutional accountability. They will engage in several asynchronous activities around intersectional topics in the communication sciences and disorders profession.

The program will culminate in a panel presentation at the 2024 NBASLH

Convention in Raleigh, NC. I am honored to serve as the chair of the Cultural Humility Ambassador Subcommittee. I am grateful that the NBASLH leadership and community would entrust this learning opportunity with our task force.

I am also thankful for the tireless work of the Cultural Humility Task Force in bringing this dream into fruition. Cheers to many more years of the CHAP! We are just getting started! 

Building a Community for the 8% in Saint Louis, MO

his month, faculty of Fontbonne University, Dr. Lauren Wright-Jones and Mrs. Mashyllia Minor, welcomed students, faculty, and professionals from the BIPOC Communication Sciences and Disorders community of Saint Louis, Mo. Using a model similar to that used by the fraternities and sororities in the region, the faculty members focused on building a community of individuals from throughout the region, rather than one consisting only of the students, faculty, and community housed at Fontbonne University. They were able to welcome students in speech language pathology and audiology from three universities, i.e., Fontbonne, Saint Louis University, and Washington University.

The first meetings have proven how important building this group is for the BIPOC Communication Sciences and Disorders community here in Saint Louis. Students from Lebanese and African American backgrounds were able to share some of their experiences as minority students in the profession while finding support and mentorship from the faculty and professionals present.

Everyone is looking forward to building the community, forming relationships, and thinking of creative ways to aid in recruiting students to speech-language pathology, audiology, and deaf education. If you are a Saint Louis region speechlanguage pathologist, audiologist, or deaf educator, Dr. Wright-Jones invites you to join the group; it convenes on the last Sunday of each month.

Speech Therapy in Belize: How to Pull off a Massive Volunteer Effort as an SLP Entrepreneur

L

ast February, my dream became a reality. I, along with a team of thirteen therapists, traveled to Belize to provide speech-language and ABA services to more than 75 children with special needs.

This volunteer expedition was an idea that I came up with in graduate school years ago, and it was truly a life-changing experience.

As someone who specializes in working with bilingual families and children with autism, I understand the importance of early intervention for children with speech delays. At my clinic, children receive free services from the state, but in Belize, there are many children with needs who are unable to receive services due to lack of funds and only having one therapist in the country.

To make this trip happen, I collaborated with two other speech-language pathologists, Quintina Briscoe M.S., CCC-SLP and Adrienne Williams M.S., CCC-SLP. Together, we provided speech therapy, music therapy, and behavioral support to children at The Inspiration Center, a speech-language clinic for special needs children in Belize City. During the three-day trip, we screened 40 children and identified those with speech delays, providing them with a suggested therapy plan

lives of children with special needs. Big Takeaways Networking is essential when it comes to achieving your volunteering goals. It's important to let people know what you're planning, because you never know how they might be able to help.

I truly believe that there's power in numbers. When you have colleagues who are willing to band with you, it makes everything less overwhelming and gives you reassurance that someone else believes in your vision. For example, when I planned my trip to Belize to provide speech-language services to children with special needs, I combined forces with two other clinic owners and volunteers from our teams.

Even though we have returned to the states, my team and I will continue to provide continued service to dozens of children through virtual (telehealth) appointments. Additionally, I want to reveal how readers can continue to help the children of Belize.

This experience has been truly lifechanging for me, and I look forward to continuing to make a difference in the

With the support of my community, I was able to raise the necessary funds for the trip. From my first trip, I learned the importance of dreaming big when it comes to volunteer efforts. I realized the impact I could have in a country with only one speech-language professional. It was truly life-changing for me, and I believe that it's important to share this message with others. There are so many ways that your readers or listeners can target their impact and make a difference in the lives of those in need. 

Dr. Derek Daniels Delivers International Presentation Derek Daniels, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Derek Daniels delivered an international presentation in London, England on September 15, 2023. The presentation was entitled, “Intersectionality and Stuttering: A Discussion of Intersectional Stigma, Identities, and Experiences.” He also chaired a panel discussion on intersectionality and stuttering. This presentation was part of an international conference entitled, “Stammering Pride Against Prejudice: Creating Stammering Culture and Identity.” 

Dr. Derek Daniels and Dr. Kia Johnson both received Professional of the Year Awards by the National Stuttering Association (NSA) at the annual convention held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in July 2023.

This award is given to professionals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the National Stuttering Association and the stuttering community, and is one of the highest honors given by the National Stuttering Association. They are the first Black professionals to receive this award. 

About RESOUND))) RESOUND))) is the official Publication of the Association.

During the September 2021 Board of Directors retreat, a motion was put forth and affirmed to change the name RESOUND))) to RESOUND))): AN OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE

NATIONAL BLACK ASSOCIATION FOR SPEECH-LANGUAGE-AND HEARING. Prior to this, RESOUND))) was the official newsletter

of the Association, and is as old as the organization. The first publication was in 1979. The newsletter, originally, combined both member information and research articles, until it was decided to separate the research section into a formal journal.

Originally, it was called ECHO. Now it is known as the Journal of the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (JNBASLH).
