September 2026

Welcome to the NBA Newsletter Your Monthly Circle to the Noosaville Business Community

Committee Report It has been a strong month for the Noosaville Business Association, marked by excellent turnout at events and growing momentum across the precinct.

Recent events

Good Morning Noosaville at Affinity Coffee Collective on 28 August was a relaxed start to the day and another well-supported Business Over Brews catch-up. The Riverside Business Luncheon on 18 September at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant by Zibros sold out quickly and delivered a strong afternoon of connection by the river. NBA members also joined the VIP launch of newest member 11.11 Studios — one of the larger business gatherings in Noosaville this year.

Activation Plan and Carols by the River A key part of our Activation Plan is bringing more events back to Noosaville — events that lift local businesses, give residents something special to enjoy, and welcome visitors into the precinct.

We are thrilled to be supporting the return of Carols by the River on 13 December. After many years without Carols on the river, this much-loved community night is finally coming home. The response already shows how strongly people have been waiting for it. Members have received an email with sponsorship opportunities for the Carols. This is a great opportunity to support this much-needed community event. NBA will host an exclusive Christmas Party in conjunction with the Carols. Members will have first option on tickets before they are released more widely. Full details were announced at our Business After Five (BA5) event on 29 September at Land & Sea Brewery.

AGM and new committee

The NBA Annual General Meeting was held on 29 September, followed by our BA5 event at Land & Sea Brewery. Turnout was excellent. Details introducing the new committee members will be circulated in the October NBA Circle. .

NBA’s Inaugural Riverside Business Luncheon Delivers a Sold-Out Success The Noosaville Business Association has officially set a new benchmark for regional networking with the triumphant debut of its very first Riverside Business Luncheon. Held along the sparkling Noosa River at the acclaimed Noosa Waterfront Restaurant & Bar by Zibros, the event exceeded all expectations, selling out well in advance and filling the dining room. Blessed with clear skies, warm sunshine, and picture-perfect waterfront views, the gathering offered local business owners and civic leaders a memorable backdrop to connect, collaborate, and celebrate the strength of the Noosaville economy. The event drew a distinguished crowd of key community figures, including Sandy Bolton MP and Cr Amelia Lorentson from Noosa Council. Delegations from other local associations including the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Coolum Business and Tourism, and Noosa Business Group Inc. also joined to show their support, reinforcing the spirit of cross-association partnership. Keynote presentations by two dynamic local entrepreneurs set an inspiring tone for the day. Teneille Newton of Noosa Black Garlic opened the afternoon by sharing insights into scaling a specialty food brand. Following a gourmet lunch, guests gathered outdoors near the water to hear from Susan Toft, founder of The Laundry Lady, who reflected on national growth and operational innovation. The relaxed, picturesque setup evoked the charm of an Italian coastal getaway, complemented by cannoli desserts, signature cocktails, and vibrant afternoon networking right by the riverbank. A sincere thank you goes to the team at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant & Bar by Zibros for their exceptional hospitality, as well as to every attendee and our incredible speakers. With interest growing rapidly, plans for next year’s luncheon are already underway, with organisers anticipating booking the entire venue to accommodate the surging demand.

Good Morning Noosaville: Community Spirit Shines at Business Over Brews

Community connections remained front and center as the Noosaville Business Association returned with another vibrant instalment of its Good Morning Noosaville networking series. Hosted at the popular Affinity Coffee Collective, the morning Business Over Brews event brought together local business owners, operators, and entrepreneurs for a bright, energetic start to the workday. Sunshine greeted attendees as they gathered outdoors to share ideas, explore potential partnerships, and discuss current local opportunities over fresh, hot coffee. The host team, led by Sven at Affinity Coffee Collective, worked tirelessly throughout the morning to keep artisan coffees flowing and conversations lively. The relaxed atmosphere made it easy for established operators and brand-new members alike to mingle. The NBA was particularly pleased to welcome a fresh group of new business owners into the fold, furthering its mission to represent and empower the diverse commercial ecosystem across Noosaville. Special guest Sandy Bolton MP dropped in to chat directly with local business owners, answering questions and gaining firsthand perspective on current regional updates. The event’s seamless execution was made possible thanks to major coffee sponsor Bank of Queensland (BOQ Noosa Civic), whose ongoing support ensured that every cup was covered for attending members, a gesture that always proves a massive hit with the crowd.

Events like Business Over Brews highlight what makes the Noosaville commercial landscape so unique: a shared commitment to supporting local enterprises, building accessible networks, and maintaining strong relationships across retail, hospitality, trade, and professional service sectors. With a jam-packed schedule of upcoming events planned for the rest of the year, the NBA encourages all members and local business representatives to keep an eye on official social channels and the NBA website to reserve their spots for upcoming gatherings.

BEYOND THE BREACH: 9 Subtle Signs Your Accounts or Cloud Devices Have Been Compromised Cyberattacks rarely arrive with a ransom note. Attackers may quietly read messages, monitor activity and harvest data, so vigilance matters.

Article by Mathew Hoffman, Cloud Computer Company

“Cyberattacks rarely announce themselves.” The warning signs are usually small, ordinary and easy to explain away. Together, they can tell a different story.

Start with the pattern, not the panic. 01 Unexpected MFA requests An unrequested code or push notification can mean someone already has your password. Do this: Never approve it. Report the prompt and change your password.

02 Unrecognised logins or active sessions A login from an unfamiliar device can indicate unauthorised access. Do this: Sign out of all other sessions and change your password.

03 Strange or sluggish device behaviour Heat, rapid battery drain or unexpected camera, microphone or data activity can point to hidden processes. Do this: Install updates, run a malware scan and escalate if it continues.

04 Mystery apps, extensions or integrations An unfamiliar app, extension or cloud integration can help an attacker maintain access. Do this: Review permissions and revoke anything unrecognised.

No single clue proves a compromise. A cluster of changes is worth checking quickly. THE PATTERN CONTINUES Quiet access can look like normal life.

05 A sudden surge in spam and phishing A sudden rise in spam or phishing can mean your details appeared in a breach. Do this: Check exposed credentials, change affected passwords and strengthen MFA.

06 Tiny unexplained charges Small unexplained charges can test whether an account is active before larger fraud. Do this: Review statements and cloud billing. Report unfamiliar transactions.

07 Messages marked read when you have not opened them Unexpected read messages, Sent items or new inbox rules can indicate account access. Do this: Check forwarding and inbox rules, sign out everywhere and reset your password.

08 Sudden account lockouts or bans An unexpected lockout may mean someone changed your password or recovery details. Do this: Start account recovery and contact cloud support.

09 Unfamiliar streaming or content history Odd recommendations or viewing history can reveal a reused password has been exposed. Do this: Change the password and never reuse it.

What to do if something looks wrong 1. Sign out of all other sessions. 2. Change the password — use a unique replacement from a password manager. 3. Strengthen MFA. 4. Review and remove third-party app permissions. 5. Contact your IT or cloud support team if business data may be involved. Don’t panic — but don’t wait: the sooner suspicious activity is contained, the less opportunity an attacker has to reach data or move through your environment. Security is also about noticing when digital tools behave out of character.

A Business Owner’s Guide to Choosing a Noosaville Location

Written by Alanna Shapland Ray White Commercial

When you're looking for commercial premises, it's easy to focus on the property itself. How big is it? Does it have parking? What's the rent? Is the fitout suitable? But there is another question that can be even more important: Is the location right for the business? Noosaville has a number of distinct commercial precincts, and they each attract a different type of customer and business. Gympie Terrace isn't the same as Mary Street. Mary Street isn't the same as Gibson Road. And a quieter office tucked away from the main commercial strips may actually be the perfect location for one business and completely wrong for another. Choosing the right location starts with understanding what your customers actually need. Gympie Terrace: When the location is part of the experience Gympie Terrace is probably the most obvious example of a location where the address itself forms part of the business proposition. The riverfront, restaurants, cafes, tourism and pedestrian activity create an environment that is particularly suited

to businesses where visibility, atmosphere and passing trade matter. Hospitality is the obvious example. A cafe or restaurant benefits from being surrounded by other dining businesses and having people walking and driving past. Retailers selling lifestyle, fashion, gifts and tourism-related products can also benefit from the visitor traffic and the destination feel. There is also an increasing overlap between retail and service businesses. Beauty, wellness, boutique services and other customerfacing operators can work well in this type of environment where the premises are part of the overall customer experience. Current commercial offerings along Gympie Terrace demonstrate the mix, with retail, office, restaurant and takeaway uses appearing across the riverfront precinct. But there is a trade-off. Prime exposure generally comes at a premium, and a business needs to be confident that it actually benefits from that exposure. If most customers arrive by appointment and don't care where you are, paying for a riverfront position may not necessarily make commercial sense.

Mary Street: A different kind of customer

Move away from the river and the equation changes. The Mary Street and Thomas Street area has a more mixed commercial character, with professional offices, health and wellbeing businesses, restaurants and other services operating alongside retail. Council's planning framework identifies the Gibson Road/Mary Street/Thomas Street area as a key part of the Noosa Business Centre, with a role in servicing both the local community and visitors. This can make the area particularly appealing to businesses that rely on repeat customers rather than purely passing trade. Think accountants, solicitors, consultants, allied health, beauty and wellness, professional services and businesses where customers are coming for a specific purpose. The customer may not stumble across the business while walking along the street. They may already know where they're going. For those businesses, access, parking, presentation and convenience can be more important than having the

busiest possible frontage.

Gibson Road: Accessibility and destination shopping

Gibson Road operates differently again. The precinct has a stronger destination and bulky-goods/ service character, with larger premises, established retailers and significant customer parking. Current commercial offerings in the area include largerformat health, fitness and wellness operators, alongside retail and service businesses. This type of location can work particularly well for businesses that need space, accessibility and parking rather than a traditional shopfront. Furniture, homewares, fitness, larger-format retail, showrooms and businesses where customers are likely to drive to the premises can all benefit from this type of environment. The important thing is not to confuse visibility with exposure. A business may not have the same pedestrian activity as Gympie Terrace, but if customers are deliberately travelling there, the location can still be highly effective.

The quieter commercial precincts

Then there are the locations that don't necessarily have the profile of Gympie Terrace, Mary Street or Gibson Road. For some businesses, these can actually be the better option. A consultant who sees clients by appointment may not need a prominent shopfront. A small professional office may be better suited to a quieter building with easier parking. A business that has moved towards online sales may need storage, access and a professional base rather than passing foot traffic. And a growing service business may be able to secure substantially more usable space by moving away from the most prominent retail locations. This is where business owners sometimes make the mistake of paying for exposure they don't actually need.

Start with your customer, not the property

Before choosing a location, it is worth asking a few simple questions. How do my customers find me? If the answer is “they walk past”, exposure is probably

critical. If they find you through Google, referrals or social media and arrive specifically for an appointment, the equation changes. How often do customers visit? A business with hundreds of short customer visits has very different requirements from one seeing five clients a day. Do customers need parking? This can be a major consideration for health, professional and service businesses. Does the business need a shopfront? Not every business does. How important is presentation? For some businesses, the premises are part of the brand. For others, they are simply somewhere to work. And perhaps most importantly, what does the business need to do over the next five years? The cheapest premises today may not be the cheapest option if the business outgrows them in 18 months. There is no single “best” location One of the things that makes Noosaville interesting from a commercial perspective is the variety of environments available within a relatively compact area. A restaurant may want the activity and atmosphere of Gympie Terrace. A medical or professional business may value the accessibility and established commercial environment around Mary Street. A showroom may prefer Gibson Road. A growing business may decide that a quieter location gives it more space and better value. None of these locations is inherently better than the others. The right location is the one that matches the way the business actually operates. And that's perhaps the most important thing to remember when looking for commercial premises. Don't start by asking: “What is the best area in Noosaville?” Start by asking: “Where are my customers, and what do they need from me?” Once you answer that question, choosing the right premises becomes a whole lot easier.

ART GALLERY ART CONSULTATION & HIRE FINE ART PRINT STUDIO

60 Artists. 60 Original Works. One Greater Cause. This October, we’re asking Noosaville businesses to do more than simply support local. We’re asking you to help us make a difference. For the third year, Studio One Noosa is bringing together our arts community for Pretty in Pink, our month long fundraising exhibition and online art auction supporting McGrath Foundation Cancer Care Nurses. Over the past two years, Pretty in Pink has raised more than $26,000 for the McGrath Foundation. This year, we want to take that considerably further. Pretty in Pink 26, Terra Noosa brings together 60 artists, each contributing an original artwork created especially for the exhibition. Sixty individual artists have given their time, creativity and talent to help us build something that can make a genuine contribution during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Now, we need the business community behind them. Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer. A family member. A friend. A colleague. A customer. Sometimes someone sitting at the desk beside us. It is why causes like this matter, and why, as a local business community, we have an opportunity to turn our collective support into something tangible. We would love you to come. But more importantly, we need you to BID. The complete Terra Noosa collection will be exhibited at Studio One Noosa throughout October, with every artwork available through our online auction. We warmly invite fellow NBA members, their teams, families and friends to join us for our Opening Night on Friday 2 October from 5pm, and again for our Auction Finale on Saturday 31 October from 5pm. Come and see the collection. Meet the artists. Have a drink with us. Bring your staff, clients and friends and enjoy what we hope will be two wonderful nights for the Noosaville community.

But please don't let your support end there. We need bids. Every bid helps build momentum. Every artwork sold helps us raise more. And every dollar we can contribute helps the McGrath Foundation continue its work supporting people and families experiencing cancer. You don't have to wait until the finale. The online auction opens on Tuesday 29 September, giving you the entire month to discover the collection, choose the work that speaks to you and place a bid. Perhaps there's a piece for your home. Perhaps your business needs something special for its reception, boardroom or office. Perhaps you could purchase a work as a gift. Or perhaps you simply see an artwork you love and know that buying it will contribute to something much bigger. This year's auction also includes one very special additional item — a team-signed Brisbane Broncos jersey, professionally framed and generously donated by the Brisbane Broncos for the fundraiser. This is where we need Noosaville to get behind us. Pretty in Pink started with a simple idea: use art to bring people together and do some good. Three years later, it has become something much bigger than Studio One Noosa. It belongs to the artists who contribute their work, the people who volunteer their time, the businesses who help us spread the word and, most importantly, the people who put their hands up and bid. So we're asking our fellow Noosaville businesses to help us make Pretty in Pink 26 – Terra Noosa our biggest fundraising year yet. Come to the Opening. Come to the Finale. Share the auction with your customers, staff and friends. And please — BID. Find the one that speaks to you. Bid generously. Make a difference.

Do your POS system, website, menus, invoices and other customer-facing materials need updating?

Small Business Heads Up: Card Surcharges Are Changing from 1 October If your business currently adds a surcharge when customers pay by card, there is an important change coming on 1 October 2026. From 1 October, Visa, Mastercard, eftpos and American Express are introducing “no surcharge” rules, meaning businesses will no longer be able to add a separate surcharge for customers paying with these cards.

What does this mean for small business? For businesses that currently pass card processing costs on to customers, the cost of accepting card payments will need to be considered as part of your normal business costs. For example, if you currently charge a 1.5% card surcharge, from 1 October you won't be able to simply add that 1.5% to the customer's bill when they pay by card. It is worth noting that businesses can still set their own prices. You may choose to incorporate payment processing costs into your overall pricing rather than charging a separate card surcharge. The ACCC has specifically confirmed that businesses can review and adjust their prices, provided pricing information is not misleading.

Options to consider A good time to check your numbers Before 1 October, businesses may want to review: How much are you currently paying in card processing fees? How much are you currently recovering through card surcharges? What percentage of your customers pay by card? What are your average transaction values? How will absorbing the cost affect your margins? Are there lower-cost payment options available? Is your current payment provider offering you a competitive rate?

The Reserve Bank has also introduced changes to interchange fees from 1 October, which are intended to reduce some of the underlying costs of card payments for merchants. The actual impact will vary between businesses and payment providers.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer For some businesses, the impact of removing the surcharge may be relatively small. For others, particularly those with high card transaction volumes or tight margins, it may be worth taking a closer look at pricing and payment costs. The key is to understand the numbers before 1 October and decide what works for your business and your customers. If you're unsure how the change may affect your business, consider speaking with your accountant or bookkeeper about your options. This article is intended as a general information update for NBA members. For specific advice about your business, speak with your accountant, bookkeeper or payment provider. Further information: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has published guidance for businesses on the changes to card surcharging.

WELCOME TO THE 3AM CLUB: The hidden cost of broken sleep It's the most exclusive club in the country: the 3am club. Eyes open, brain online, ceiling staring back at you. And it's almost always the same time, every night. Why? Sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles, and by 3am we've shifted into lighter, REM-heavy sleep, so waking between cycles becomes far more likely. Meanwhile, cortisol begins its slow climb, gently nudging you awake. Then life adds fuel. A few drinks at dinner can metabolise into a restless, wide-awake patch in the early hours. So can stress: the 3am brain is notorious for replaying tomorrow's to-do list with remarkable clarity. And as REM sleep increases towards morning, the muscles supporting your airway relax further, making snoring or breathing pauses more likely. That last one matters, because the cost of broken sleep runs far higher than the yawns and extra coffees we use to count it. The most obvious casualty is your brain. Fragmented

sleep drains focus, slows reaction times, and blunts memory and decision-making. Over years, it quietly compounds into higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and weight gain, as hunger hormones swing out of balance. There's a relationship cost, too: irritability, low patience and reduced emotional resilience affect the people around you long before you notice it yourself. And a financial one: lost productivity, sick days and workplace accidents all carry a price tag. The catch? Broken sleep often feels normal, because you've forgotten what rested feels like. If you're in the 3am club most nights, or you snore heavily, wake with headaches, or feel shattered after a full night in bed. That's not just tiredness. It's worth investigating. Talk to your GP. 2026 Sunshine Coast Business Awards Congratulations to our Noosaville Business Association members named as finalists in the 2026 Sunshine Coast Business Awards. (I've attached some logos and photos) It is wonderful to see so many new businesses putting themselves forward this year. Around 30% of entries came from businesses new to the awards, and a total of 247 businesses entered — the second-highest number in the program’s history. There were also 25 Noosa businesses named as finalists, a strong showing for our local community. A big shoutout to the 25 volunteer judges drawn from across the business community.
