“We’ll show you how!” Knitting and crocheting drop-in group provides camaraderie and support Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator

Shortly after her retirement, senior Rita Tao decided to learn to knit by watching YouTube videos. Her new hobby eventually led her to the Northbrook Park District’s Senior Center, which she has frequented once a week for the last three years as a member of the drop-in knitting and crocheting group. “I love it,” she said. “The people are so friendly, and we have a good time.” The group that meets at 10am on Wednesdays is a cherished weekly Page 4

Senior Center News, cont. appointment at the Northbrook Community Center for seniors who make everything from hats to scarves, blankets, caplets, sweaters and even cell phone purses. Over the years, they have donated many items to underprivileged families. Senior Center member Pat Thalman is the group’s resident expert, having learned the craft at the tender age of five. It all started when she broke her arm and her grandmother set off on a healing mission, Pat explained. “The doctor said, ‘She’ll never use her arm again,’ because there was too much nerve involvement. We told my grandmother, and she said, ‘What do doctors know? You’re going to crochet a rug with me,” she recalled. “I couldn’t open and close my fingers; I couldn’t move my arm at all. But children live up to what your expectations are.” Pat has knitted and crocheted everything including suits and dresses, and even took part in fashion shows. Nowadays, she happily helps fellow Senior Center members overcome obstacles and learn the tricks of the trade. “There is a nice camaraderie,” she said. Another group member is Phyllis Kosner, who met Pat about 25 years ago while purchasing yarn at Hobby Lobby. “I had an old piece of my mother’s, a blanket, and I didn’t know how to fix it. We have been friends ever since, and we both joined the Senior Center,” she said. Phyllis has since expanded her repertoire to items like sweaters, shawls and coats, taking up what once had been her mother’s hobby. Senior Center member Corky Schwartz joined the group two years ago, when her granddaughter took a summer acting class through the Park District. She has made a hat and scarves, and most recently was working on a purse.

The atmosphere of the group is always friendly and supportive, she said. “Pat is the best, and the people in the group are wonderful. Everyone is so helpful to everyone else. And knitting is so relaxing.”

“I have always done crafty things, and I knitted for years. Then I stopped, and I did needlepoint,” Corky said. “When I heard they had a knitting drop-in group, I thought, ‘I’ll go back to knitting.’”

“Come in and we’ll sit down and give you needles and thread — and we’ll show you how!” Phyllis said.

The group members said they would love to welcome new members, no experience needed.

A Special Day for Seniors Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator

This year’s National Senior Health & Fitness Day celebration on May 27 at Techny Prairie Activity Center was full of fun opportunities for seniors to discover new healthy activities. The event was attended by about 150 people aged 55 and up who enjoyed a variety of free offerings, including body composition analysis with InBody scans, along with open gym pickleball, access to the walking track and the fitness floor, and special low-impact group fitness classes. There were also healthy snacks, fun games and a variety of giveaways. A special thank you to the event’s sponsors, including presenting sponsors CJE SeniorLife, Rosewater Memory Care and Senior Helpers of Greater Chicago, as well as gold-level sponsors Align Wellness Center and Inspirations of Northbrook. Regular exercise can help older adults stay independent and prevent many health problems that come with age, according to the National Council on Aging. Experts recommend that older adults engage in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes, five days a week; and musclestrengthening activities at least two days a week. Page 6
