Dear Northbrook Senior Center Members, We hope your upcoming month is full of holiday joy!

As we begin a new year, we are excited to share events, classes and important reminders to help you stay active, healthy and connected.

Thank you to all who attended our Thanksgiving Luncheon with a performance by Melody by Leslie.

The lunch catered by Sunset Foods was delicious as always. A special thank you to CJE SeniorLife for sponsoring this event.

Some upcoming events you will find in this edition of Momentum are monthly bingos, Mardi Gras Luncheon, St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, Chinese New Year Luncheon and a trip to Drury Lane Theatre to see “On Your Feet,” a jukebox musical telling the inspiring true story of Grammy Award-winning musicians husband-and-wife Gloria and Emilio Estefan. We provide transportation; you enjoy the show! And finally, we will have a lovely trip to Long Grove for High Tea with Gerri in April.

Did you know that you can sign up for a monthly TPAC walking track membership for only $12 per month? Stay active in the winter months. Stop by the TPAC customer service desk for more details.

We would also love for you to join us for social hour every Friday at 12:15pm in the multipurpose room at TPAC. It is a great way to meet new people and enjoy free refreshments.

We would also like to extend our gratitude for everyone’s patience as we navigate all the changes and facility moves during our renovation. In this issue you will find important updates on the renovation project at the soon to be Northbrook Community Center. We are all so excited to get back to our “home” and welcome you all back.

Drop-in Programming

Our Drop-in programs are designed to provide opportunities for members to engage in games and activities that they have previously learned and/or are familiar with. While our Drop-ins do not provide instruction, we also offer separate instructional classes designed to prepare newcomers for participation in these Drop-ins.

Socialization offerings do not require any previous knowledge to participate. These are great opportunities for new Senior Center members to meet others and engage in conversation and community.

Members do not need to notify us in advance before attending a Drop-in program. Not a member yet and interested in trying out our Drop-in programs? Stop by the customer service desk at Techny Prairie Activity Center for a guest pass for Senior Center Drop-in programs.

Tips for You to Sleep Better in 2026 Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator

The New Year typically brings a slew of positive resolutions — eat better, exercise more, save money, start volunteering, stop killing your plants — but achieving better sleep might not be top of mind for most people.

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for overall wellbeing, as it affects everything from mood to brain activity and physical health, Northbrook Park District Fitness Supervisor Julie Lappas said.

“I am very passionate about sleep,” Julie said. “I prioritize it, and I encourage others to prioritize it, too.”

One of the great benefits of exercising is better sleep, Julie pointed out. “Essentially, you’re tiring your body out. If you’re not moving your body and you’re not giving it a good workout, it can be harder to fall asleep.”

Besides moving your body, here are Julie’s tips for better sleep in the New Year: • Sleep seven to nine hours per night.

• Keep a consistent routine by going to bed and waking up around the same time every day.

• Set up your sleeping space for success with: » Cool temperatures of ideally 65F to 68F.

Try Out a Senior Trip This Spring!

Among the many Senior Center offerings, some of the most special experiences are the trips managed by Recreation Manager Nancy Eschker.

“We have a great time,” she said. “It’s a nice way to meet new friends and new people. There’s a lot of camaraderie, and we have fun on the ride too!

With these trips, our seniors don’t have to worry about traffic or driving themselves.”

Nancy drives a van loaned to the Park District by the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA), which helps keep costs down for seniors.

Senior Center members Miguel and Angelica Ibarra especially loved going to see “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” in March at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace.

“It was super because the music brings back all the memories, and it was more biographic, so you could have an idea of what was going on in the life of Carole King,” Miguel said. “The lunch was amazing, too!”

The most recent trip the Ibarras took was in October, to see the musical "Catch Me if You Can" at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. “It was the first time I’ve seen a round stage!” Miguel said.

“The troupe was amazing, young people with a lot of energy and excellent music.”

Senior Center member Becky Byambaa has gone on numerous trips over the last decade Page 6

“Whenever we have time, we go, because it makes us feel very special,” Becky said. “I work as a caregiver for many people, so when I have this moment of a special event, I anticipate it. I think about what I will wear, and we choose something nice and special for Janet. It’s a special holiday for us.”

Becky said her favorite trip was in April to High Tea with Gerri in Long Grove, a British tea room experience complete with finger sandwiches, raisin scones and petite pastries.

“Back when I was younger, I had the privilege to be in Oxford, so when we went last year, I had the reminiscence from 30 years ago,” she said. “Nancy was very thoughtful, she gave us fancy hats and made it very special.”

Another enjoyable trip last year was to lunch and shopping in Chicago’s Chinatown in October 2024. “We shared delicious food at a round, big table, and we talked a lot with all the people,” she said. “Then we went to Chinatown and I got two turtles for my grandson!”

The seniors praised Nancy’s planning skills and the care with which she treats she participants.

“Her personality is so happy all the time,” Miguel said. “She’s very accommodating, she’s always checking on you to see if you need anything.”

Next up are trips on March 7 to see “On Your Feet!” at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace and on April 17 to experience High Tea with Gerri in Long Grove. For more information, see page 9.

Teenager Ellie Blake and her mother Katherine do not get along — which is why it doesn’t help when Ellie and Katherine switch bodies! Now (the day before Katherine’s wedding), Ellie and Katherine must learn to understand each other before they are stuck in each other’s bodies forever! Based on the classic novel and films of the same name, Freaky Friday brings all the humor and heart of the original story to the stage in this musical adaptation.

SEASONAL RECIPE German Apple Pancake Nancy Eschker, Recreation Manager

Ingredients

• 4 large eggs • ½ cup unbleached all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon sugar • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 1 pinch salt • 1 cup milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • ¼ cup unsalted butter • ½ cup white sugar, divided • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 large tart apple — peeled, cored, sliced

Directions 1. Combine eggs, flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl; gradually mix in milk, stirring constantly.

Add vanilla, melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Let batter stand for 30 minutes or overnight.

2. Preheat the oven to 425°F. 3. Melt butter in a 10-inch oven-proof skillet, brushing butter up on the sides of the pan. Combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg in a small bowl; sprinkle sugar mixture over the butter.

Line the pan with apple slices. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup sugar over apples.

Place pan over medium-high heat until the mixture bubbles, then gently pour batter mixture over apples.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375°F and bake for 10 minutes more. Slide pancake onto a serving platter and cut into wedges.
