Hello Senior Center Members!

My journey with you is just beginning and I know you are anxious for things to return to normal. With programs back at the Leisure Center, we are slowly adjusting to the change and the halls are starting to come alive. Members are beginning to use the Library as a true drop-in location where they have chatted with friends, worked on a puzzle and enjoyed coffee before attending a class. We also welcomed a few new volunteers who are helping to support the Senior Center, and new programs are being added to amplify our offerings.

I am eager to work with you to discover your needs and interests. Share your ideas for the Senior Center by completing and returning the form to the right. All suggestions are welcome!

Rounds of Applause Our Knitting and Crochet group are special individuals with big hearts who devote their time to create handmade items for several communitybased organizations throughout the year. Most recently, the group participated in Senator Morrison’s local holiday donation drive by supplying foster children with hats, scarves, mittens, and blankets.

Donate Yarn for a Good Cause To enable the Knitting and Crochet group to continue making a difference in people’s lives by making basic essential items for those in need, consider donating yarn. If you have yarn you are not using or if you would like to make a donation in the form of a gift card for a store that sells yarn, drop off your donation to the Leisure Center's front desk.

Membership Renewal Renew your membership today by completing the registration form on page 11 and dropping it off or mailing it to the Senior Center at 3323 Walters Avenue! The annual registration fee is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $45 for non-residents. Membership includes free access to drop-in activities, discounted Senior Center program fees and subscription to Momentum, mailed quarterly to your home.

Volunteers Needed for Outreach!

Eilleen Gabriel-Galán, Recreation Supervisor, is seeking active Senior Center Members to make phone calls and connect with our current and past members. Volunteer training for this opportunity will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering to make phone calls, contact Eilleen at egalan@nbparks.org or call the Leisure Center at 847-291-2995.

Senior Center Library

Much like the body, keeping the brain active is important to aging well. Games are good exercises for the brain and help improve one's memory and problem-solving skills. Come join us for an afternoon of fun with a game of your choice to play with friends. Whether you're playing cards, chess, scrabble, rummikub, jigsaw puzzles, backgammon or checkers, a fun time can be had by all. Bring your own game supplies. Join us on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 12:30pm-4:30pm for a good time!

The Library is Open! Drop in Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm for a cup of coffee, a visit with a friend, a puzzle session, or a quiet read. The perfect place for members to meet!

AARP Driver Safety Course

TGIF Bingo

Mondays, January 10 & 17 Mondays, February 21 & 28 Mondays, March 21 & 28 All classes are from 9am-1pm AARP Driver safety just got smarter. This AARP initiative has helped older drivers stay safe, educated and confident behind the wheel since 1979. For 2022, AARP is introducing a substantial revision of the "smart driver" course; developed after considerable consultation with experts in traffic engineering, safe driving strategies and occupational therapy. After taking this course, you will be eligible for a multi-year discount on your car insurance! Be one of the first to experience the new AARP Smart Driver course. Fee is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-AARP members. Make checks payable to AARP. Credit Cards will not be accepted.

Creative Arts Aromatherapy Thursdays, January 6 & 13, 11am–12:30pm Thursdays, February 17 & 24, 6pm-7:30pm This two-part class includes the basics of aromatherapy. Part one will involve lotion making and reflexology massage, the second day will involve making aromatherapy bracelets and foot bath salts. Materials are provided.

Fiber Dyeing – Silk Scarves Thursday, January 20 & 27, 11am-12:30pm Thursday, March 17 & 24, 6pm-7:30pm Learn fiber dyeing processes in this two-session class including Shibori dyeing which is an indigo dye process that involves different folding techniques and Eco-printing which utilizes natural materials such as flowers and leaves to dye fibers. Ceramics – Wheel and Hand-Building Techniques

Learn basic hand-building techniques including coil, slab and pinch, as well as introduction to the pottery wheel. Create your own functional or sculptural ceramic art pieces. The class includes basic tools, 25 lbs. of clay and all glazes and firing.

Try Something New...Culinary Connections Fridays, January 14, February 11 and March 11 at Noon Meet at the Restaurants Who doesn’t like food? Do you want to meet others, make friends and enjoy dining at local restaurants in the company of others? If so, then Culinary Connections may be for you. You’ll meet for lunch to make new friends and socialize. Individuals are responsible for the cost of their meals and their own transportation. This is a volunteer coordinated program. Program Waiver and Release Important Information The Northbrook Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for this program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or has recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Photo/Video Policy The District takes photos and video of participants in classes, during special events and in the parks. By signing the waiver, you are giving permission to the District to use these photos and video in District publications and on the District website and social media outlets. All photos and video are the property of the District.

Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant.

Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. All hazards and dangers cannot be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks, dangers and injuries may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating, and other risks inherent to the particular activity. In this regard, it is impossible for the District to guarantee absolute safety.

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in this program/activity, and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said participation. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the District, including its officials, agents, volunteers and employees.

Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC)

Frequently Asked Questions Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) opened on January 1, 2021. TPAC is a 43,000 square foot facility that is home to an indoor track, fitness center, fitness studios, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room and a childcare room. TPAC offers a variety of memberships for full facility use or just the indoor track and this amazing new facility is the home to all group fitness classes and open gym for sports including pickleball and basketball.

I am a member of the Senior Center. Does my Senior Center membership include use of TPAC? No. TPAC membership is separate from the Senior Center membership. Members of the Senior Center need to be a TPAC member or pay a daily fee to attend group fitness classes, open gyms or use the fitness floor or track at TPAC.

I used to have a swipe card for the fitness classes at Leisure Center, can I buy one for TPAC? Swipe cards are not available for group fitness classes at TPAC. Throughout the year there may be an occasional special that offers the use of a card, but it will not be a regular option. Swipe cards are available for open gyms.

Do I need a membership to attend group fitness classes at TPAC? There are two options. The first is to have a full membership which includes access to regular group fitness classes, use of the track, participation in all open gyms and use of the fitness floor. The other option is to pay the daily fee. Daily admission includes group fitness classes, use of the track, use of the fitness floor, and open gym participation on that day. Daily admission is being offered at a discounted rate of $12 for Northbrook Park District residents and $15 for non-residents in January 2022.

Why aren't classes exclusively for seniors offered at TPAC? TPAC group fitness classes are open to all members.

The weekly schedule includes over 30 classes ranging from yoga to cycling to cardio and strength.

Some group fitness classes are designed to be low impact and suitable for active agers which would be perfect for a senior participant. All instructors in all classes will show options for all fitness levels. For advice on which classes are most appropriate for your interests and abilities, contact Rachel Tandy at 847-897-6161.

Group Fitness Classes

Will group fitness classes be returning to the Leisure Center?

In 2022, a limited number of health and wellness programs will be added at the Leisure Center. The programs will be planned for older adults and will not be the same as group fitness classes at Techny Prairie Activity Center. Prior to the opening of TPAC, the fitness classes at the Leisure Center were offered to everyone but were often viewed as Senior Center classes because of the participants who chose to register. New and developing in 2022 are health and wellness programs targeted for Senior Center participants. Classes currently held at TPAC such as W.O.W., Chair Yoga and Zumba Gold, will not be duplicated at the Leisure Center.

Fitness class options at TPAC include indoor, outdoor (weather permitting), livestream and on demand options. The group fitness schedule is available at nbfitness.org/group-fitness. Group fitness classes are included with TPAC membership or available to non-members with payment of a daily fee. Specialty classes are also offered and require the payment of a separate fee. Class offerings are subject to change.

Specialty Classes Specialty classes are contracted, targeted to specific members, medically-based, or in a highly focused area of fitness programming that requires specialized instructors with elevated certifications. TPAC members enjoy a reduced fee.

Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) Circuit Dynamic, fun, evidence-based and Parkinson’sspecific, this specialized class uses moves designed to target symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease that interfere with everyday activities. This class is designed for individuals with higher levels of functioning. Participation in this class requires physician’s approval.

Yoga School for Beginners Yoga Instructor Jim Gibilterra provides an introduction to yoga practice, covering the purpose of props, basic of poses and the benefits of each type of practice. Each session includes five classes covering the following: Class 1: Intro and basic staging poses Class 2: Standing poses and lunges Class 3: Balancing poses Class 4: Back bends, twists and recommendations for further practice Class 5: Beginner Yoga Class Attendance at each class is recommended as different poses are taught each week in progression. This program is geared for those who have never taken a yoga class or want to review their pose technique with a qualified instructor.
