Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Northbrook Park District residents,

The Northbrook Community Center reopened this summer, and it’s been truly gratifying to see the building’s transformation receive such a positive response from the community

The $12 .1 million renovation has been one of the Park District’s most exciting projects in recent years, and I am happy to report that the project finished on time and under budget thanks to the hard work of our staff, as well as our construction and community partners

I cordially invite you to come check out the revamped building, whether it’s to enroll in a class or program, come to watch a theater performance, or simply take a tour

Mark your calendars for the Northbrook Community Center Grand Opening, scheduled for Sunday, August 23 from 11am to 1pm Watch for more information at nbparks.org .

While summer will still be in full swing when you receive this Autumn Guide, it’s never too early to start planning for fall fun

Our special events this autumn include the adults-only Northbrook Brewfest, held in conjunction with the Village of Northbrook at Village Green Park on September 19, and Autumnfest, one of our most popular events for families, on October 3 at Meadowhill Park .

The second annual Fall Fishing Fest will take place on October 11 at Wood Oaks Green Park

This is a great opportunity to enjoy a morning of fishing, whether your children are already into catching fish or want to try it for the first time

Our Halloween fun includes the Halloween Pet Parade on October 22, which is just as much fun for spectators as it is for participants, and the Halloween 3K Fun Run on October 23, where runners never fail to wow us with their awesome costumes .

In November, residents of all ages can show off their basketball skills at the Turkey Shoot Free

Throw Contest on November 20 for a chance to win a Thanksgiving bird

As the winter holidays draw nearer, we invite you to decorate cookies at our new Chanukah event on December 6, enjoy a buffet breakfast and lunch with Santa on December 12, and take part in our Holiday Craft Fair on December 19, where you will be able to wrap up all your holiday shopping in one fell swoop .

Fall is also a great time for sports, especially for those who want to try something new Young people can choose from baseball, basketball, fencing, taekwondo, skateboarding, tennis, volleyball and soccer For adults, we offer pickup basketball, pickup soccer, softball, tennis and pickleball We also have leagues for all ages

And of course, the Northbrook community can engage in ice sports year-round at the Northbrook Sports Center, which features two NHL-sized rinks, and golf year-round at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, which offers indoor technology to keep your golf skills fresh during the colder months

If you want to learn a new skill, we have cooking classes for all ages thanks to our brand-new teaching kitchen at the Northbrook Community Center, along with classes in visual arts, theater, crafts and much more We always strive to provide a varied repertoire of offerings, and we hope you will find plenty of options to suit your interests!

As always, thank you for choosing to share your time with us, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community

Warmly,

IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES

West Park

The extensive renovation of West Park, 1730 Pfingsten Road, is scheduled to be completed in the fall

The $1 9 million project includes a new playground with increased accessibility, ramped play areas and synthetic turf safety surface; a new picnic shelter near the playground; replacement of three tennis courts; replacement of one sand volleyball court; new native planting areas along the trail; trail additions along the parking lot to create a two-thirds of a mile continuous loop within the park; a new multisport court featuring hockey and basketball; and new amenities such as benches, garbage/ recycling cans and a drinking fountain with bottle filler and dog bowl .

The project is partially funded by a $600,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources

Crestwood Park

The fitness station at Crestwood Park, 1824 Milton Avenue, was replaced with new fitness equipment The project, completed in June, also included the installation of new concrete curbs and artificial turf safety surface

The replaced fitness station at Crestwood Park had been installed in 2013 and had reached the end of its useful life due to continuous use by the community

Crestwood Park is among three Park District locations with outdoor fitness stations, along with Greenview Park and Floral Park

Athletic Fields

After a Field and Court Assessment Report was accepted by the Board of Commissioners in September 2024, the Park District began to tackle a multi-year plan of improvements starting with high-use fields

Improvements to date include soccer fields at Indian Ridge Park and Wood Oaks Green Park, a baseball field at Meadowhill Park, and softball and baseball fields at Techny Prairie Park and Fields (TPPF) .

Coming this fall are improvements at TPPF Softball Field #26, Meadowhill Baseball Field #2 and West Park Baseball Field #16 In 2027, the Park District plans to tackle further work at TPPF Baseball Field #29, along with additional athletic field projects to be determined

Trail Renovation

The renovation of the Basin Loop Trail at Techny Prairie Park and Fields is anticipated to start in early August and be completed in October

The project includes the full removal and replacement of the asphalt path surrounding the basin as well as several connector entrances Construction will begin at the bridge at the north end of the loop, with work continuing to the south Contractors will access the construction area from Techny Road .

The project is partially funded by a $200,000 grant from the Illinois Bicycle Path Grant Program .

Lake Management

In June, the Park District started a Lake Management Plan for Lake Shermerville at Wood Oaks Green Park and Anetsberger Pond at Anetsberger Golf Course

The plan includes buoys that monitor water quality data and trends, treatment of Lake Shermerville to reduce algae bloom and a fish count study that will determine fish stocking needs for the fall .

Future improvements might include the addition of fish habitats such as rocks and logs (artificial and natural) .

Weather Monitoring and Alert System

The Northbrook Park District has four outdoor weather warning stations located at Anetsberger Golf Course, Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Meadowhill Aquatic Center and Northbrook Sports Center .

The Perry Weather Outdoor Warning System uses a nationwide sensor network to triangulate the precise location, type (cloud-to-ground or cloud-to-cloud) and intensity of lightning strikes in real time This confirmed-strike data helps ensure alerts are triggered by verified lightning activity rather than atmospheric interference .

Warning & All Clear Signals

A warning signal (one long 15-second horn) will sound and strobe lights will activate when a potentially dangerous weather situation is in the area; the strobe light continues to flash while the alert remains active; and three short horn blasts and the cessation of the strobe light indicates an all clear

All activities in the park should end immediately and patrons should leave the park when the warning signal sounds It is recommended to seek shelter in a vehicle or a nearby building

For more information about the Perry Weather Outdoor Warning System, scan the QR code to visit nbparks.org/status .
