Linearity in Spaces FALL 2023

The studio site is located at 5130 Bellaire Blvd. It is an abandoned Randall’s store in the middle of two intersections. This project involves the usage of the original structural wall that the store used. For this project we started by referencing our precedent and the method they used to create a design. This involved the use of linearity and a simple shape of a rectangle, by using our site analysis, we created lines that helped us form a mass diagram that would then be adapted with the square footage of the building. Due to emergency flooding the main programs of our building are located on the second floor. The roof was designed by taking the angled roof idea from the precedent and then further making the roof steep to create areas for skylights to illuminate the second floor. The position of the structure on the site was decided to help allow access to the building through the two main streets that pass by the site. As for the design of the programs, they heavily reference the shops and companies near our site to incorporate them in our center and further provide communal resources to the neighborhood along with the library.

Insula FALL 2022

This project is located on Brady Island, part of the Houston Ship Channel. The main purpose of this project is to “recycle” Brady Island converting it in a place that could be self-sufficient environmentally and ecologically while also opening it to the public. The main programs in this project are a compost center and a restaurant. The recycling center focuses on the production on compost which will be used to restore Brady Island. The restaurant seeks to create public and recreational spaces along the waterfront of Downtown all the way to the Port of Houston. In this project, the focus on linearity is intensified by creating a grid system using the compost rows on the site to determine the placement of the remaining programs.

Room City SPRING 2022

This project is located right across the Menil Drawing Institute. Room city seeks to navigate the divide between interior and exterior spaces by analyzing the typical elements that compose the idea of a room and extracting those elements to produce new froms of urban and public experience. The project started with a precedent study in which we looked at the way rooms were being expressed. After analyzing different factors such as circulation, program arrangement, and form we moved on to the next phase which consisted on designing two different alterations. After this exploration, we focused on one of the alterations to develop a city within a room.

House + FALL 2021

This project is located close to Prairie View A&M University and it seeks to create a space in which a historian can study the life and impact of black communities as well as creating a place in which the history of that community can be celebrated. It combines domestic and public spaces and it studies how private and public spaces can relate to each other. Being located in rural yet historical area, I wanted to perserve the nature of the site as much as possible. For this, I proposed a building that sinks into the ground following the topography of the site. The green areas that are being lost by the placement of this building are brought back to the site in the form of green roofs which expand into the building and are accessible to the public.
