With so much going on in The Nazareth Trust and, in particular, in our Hospital as we begin the year-long celebration of its 150th year, this edition is packed with information and news. I hope, then, that you will find the pages following both an enjoyable and inspirational read.
In November, we had a tremendous time at the inaugural event of our anniversary celebrations and in welcoming the 2011 Bike Riders home to the Hospital after a gruelling 200+ miles of wheeled trek that took the riders from Haifa, to Galilee, to Nazareth. You will find a wonderful selection of pictures marking these occasions inside, including photographs of the intrepid 'yellowshirts' riding into a rousing welcome at the Hospital. I want to thank all those who took part in this year's ride, including those who generously supported the riders and, of course, EMMS International who led the organisation of the ride and helped make it such a great success. Inside, you will find a monthly calendar of events and themes as our anniversary year begins to gather pace, as well as news of a Global Reunion in September 2012. We hope to be able to work alongside all of our international Friends Groups to run localised events in September, but, in Nazareth, we will have a week of reunion events from the 1st to the 7th September. Registrations for the Nazareth Reunion will open on the 9th of January 2012 register as soon as you can! Our School continues to make excellent progress in delivering the Nursing BA with Haifa University and you will also find some exciting news inside about our SERVE Nazareth Programme. There is simply too much to cover in my introduction here, so I will take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing support and prayers - and to encourage you to join us wherever, whenever and however you can during our 150th year of celebrations. A
s Chair of the Trustees, I welcome you to the Christmas edition of The Nazareth Trust Newsletter. Since our last newsletter I have been blessed with visiting Nazareth a number of times to see first-hand the extraordinary work which continues to go on. It was a great honour to be part of the anniversary celebrations and in Ian Lyall our Cycle the Galilee event. We have Chair of Trustees enjoyed an outstanding start to the year of our 150th anniversary celebrations, and look forward to the months ahead, particularly September, the time of our ‘Global Reunion’. A particularly joyous occasion occurred at the end of the summer with the birth of Nita'a, daughter of proud mum, Noah Boban. We recognise all babies born in our hospital are special in so many ways and now each month, the hospital announces the birth of the 150th baby as a reminder of the joy and celebration of life during our anniversary year. As well as a time for thanksgiving and celebration of the birth of Jesus, Christmas is a time for sowing the seeds for future harvest and I very much see this as a task for all of us who care for our work in Nazareth. We need to sow the seeds now to see the fruit of our work continue in years to come.

PRAYER BOX At this time of year everyone is very busy but spare a few precious minutes to pray for the members of the Board of Trustees who work so hard to support the work of The Nazareth Trust. The year ahead will undoubtedly be one of the most joyful in our history but it will also place additional responsibilities on our shoulders, ask the Lord to help us rise to the challenge with humbleness, grace and dignity. Lift up the leadership and all of the staff of the Nazareth Trust, as they work daily to deliver all we do in the Hospital, School of Nursing, SERVE Nazareth and the Nazareth Village.

150th Anniversary Begins! Anniversary Celebrations
T
he launch of our 150th anniversary year got off to a tremendous start with a joyous and eventful day on 10th November. The event was opened by a torch procession with seven board members handing over symbolic flaming torches to seven local employees, volunteers and retired employees, representing the different sectors of the hospital.

Joseph Main, CEO, welcomed an enthusiastic audience of some 350 well-wishers and staff, gathered from all around Israel, with an inspirational speech reflecting on the achievements of the hospital over the years and giving the audience an insight into the future. Joining Joseph was the Ambassador of Great Britain in Israel, Matthew Gould; Ramez Geraisy, the Mayor of Nazareth; Dr Michael Dor, Head of General Medicine; Noaz Bar-Nir, Director General, Tourism Ministry; Ian Lyall, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Dr Bishara Bisharat, Head of the Hospital, who all spoke with great enthusiasm and appreciation for the work and history of the Hospital, as well as its importance in the future of Israeli healthcare. Following the speakers, a group of dancers, the Mawal Team of Arts, and singers, provided the entertainment. A highlight of the entertainment was a solo piano piece by Nabil Hayek, a ten year old boy who was born in the hospital. The opening events culminated in the arrival of the cyclists at the end of their challenging six day trip. Trustee, Mike Frew, who has taken part in four cycles in aid of the Nazareth Hospital said, “We were all quite overwhelmed when we saw everyone gathered at the finish line. It was a great moment and made it all very worthwhile. It is a tough challenge, but you get the chance to make some new friends and explore the countryside. It really is a memorable experience�.

150th Anniversary Begins! Pedal Power Shifts Anniversary Into Gear
C
ongratulations to all 27 cyclists who took part in the Cycle the Galilee 2011 and whose arrival in Nazareth on the 11th November, symbolised the start of our anniversary year. After an arduous six day trip across Jordan, covering a staggering 220 miles, the cyclists were greeted by a large number of well wishers who had gathered to mark the event as part of the anniversary programme.

We are deeply appreciative to all the cyclists, their supporters and all those who worked to make the event such a success. For many cyclists it was a first time experience but for a number of die-hards, including Trevor Jones who has taken part 14 times, Evelyn Cook, a remarkable 9 times, and Mike Frew, who has taken part in 4 cycles, it was the chance to clock up another remarkable achievement. The cycle started in Mount Carmel, near Haifa, and each day the cyclists covered around 50 miles, spending the night in a local kibbutz. Evelyn Cook said, “When I signed up for the first cycle in 1998 at the age of sixty, I would never in a million years have thought I would be now talking about my ninth bike ride. This year's route was definitely the hardest as there were lots of hills. “There is always lots of joy, laughter, fun and exceptional comradeship develops between members of the expedition with common goals and shared hardships. “I have made some great friends on the trips and am returning to Israel next August for a wedding. It is great to go back to the hospital in Nazareth and see the Not too long to go changes that have been made over the past 13 years - this time I got to see the new state of the art operating theatres that have been installed thanks to the help of charitable donations.” Fellow cyclist, Trevor Jones added, "I took part in my first cycle trip in 1997 and I loved it so much I have gone back year after year. It is an amazing experience. “It is great seeing the land where Jesus lived and a real highlight of the trip is going to visit the hospital in Nazareth and seeing where the money is going and the people it is benefiting.” Joseph was with the well wishers and said, “It is humbling to see the effort of the cyclists, both physically and spiritually - that they find the heart to commit to such an arduous event in support of the people and work in Nazareth.”

150th Anniversary Global Reunion
O
ne of the main events proposed to mark the anniversary is a Global Reunion across key areas in the world with a special reunion week in Nazareth itself commencing the 1st September (see page 16 for additional details). We hope to plan reunion events in the United States, Canada, Australia and Scotland to provide all the opportunities we can to unite as many people as possible who have worked, volunteered or been associated with the Hospital over the years. There has been a tremendous number of people over the years who have been touched by Nazareth Hospital, many of whom have been enriched by their experience. Although it's a The Nazareth Hospital challenging task, what better way to celebrate than by sharing that experience with as many people as possible. Through our Friends groups across the world we are hoping to spread these events internationally and, of course, we hope to be able to host an event in Edinburgh to commemorate Dr Vartan's roots within the medical fraternity. Trustee, John Vartan, great grandson of Dr P K Vartan said, “The family is very proud of the work of the Hospital and the great plans for this remarkable quasquicentennial year. I have been lucky enough to visit the Hospital on many occasions and never fail to be impressed by the work and dedication of all those involved in the Hospital.�

Musical Tribute
I
n celebration of our anniversary, three talented musicians teamed up to produce a special song to accompany a musical film depicting the history of the Hospital. Written by Samar Samawi, our anniversary co-ordinator, and composed and arranged by Karen Matar, the song has been brought to life by singer, Amal Matar Saed. The film uses photographs of the hospital over the years, with a snap shot into the life of Dr P K Vartan and his Scottish wife, Mary Anna, to the present day, illustrating historical milestones along the way. Nazareth Hospital EMMS Time To Reflect & Look To The Future
O
ur 150th anniversary year of celebrations began on 10th November.
A huge milestone in the history of the Nazareth Hospital, it is truly remarkable to take stock of Dr P K Vartan’s vision built upon the achievements of our dedicated staff and volunteers. Plans are well underway for the organisation to mark the occasion throughout the year but as well as a time of celebration, the anniversary continues to highlight the cause and appeal for funds to progress with our work. During the anniversary year we hope, amongst other things, to raise enough to fund a new mortuary within the hospital, as CEO, Joseph Main explains. “The existing mortuary in the hospital is inadequate now that the hospital has grown to its current size. Our plans are to provide a new, larger facility which will include an adjacent family room providing the dignity and respect deserving at such a time. "We have already identified a suitable area of ground which would provide easier access than the present unit and are hopeful that our fundraising efforts will enable the building to happen�. New Life Commemorates Anniversary Celebrations

roud mum, Noah Boban, has many reasons to celebrate following the birth of her beautiful baby on 23rd August. For daughter, Nita'a, was the 150th baby to be delivered in the hospital during August. Thirty one year old Noah from kibbutz Giva'at, had heard good things about the hospital from her friends. She visited several hospitals in the area but decided to have her baby at the Nazareth Hospital because of the excellent treatment and privacy.

As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations we commemorate the birth of the 150th baby born in our Hospital in any given month. On average, 170 babies are born at the hospital every month. Every birth at the hospital is a celebration and symbolises the very ethos of the hospital. What better tribute to remind ourselves that as we celebrate our anniversary we are also celebrating the arrival of more than 150 new babies every month!

Nazareth Hospital EMMS A Welcome Visit

r John Gleisner, a senior psychiatrist from New Zealand visited the Nazareth Hospital to learn more about training opportunities for Palestinian Medical Students and resident doctors at the Psychiatry department. Following a tour of the hospital departments, Dr Gleisner met with the psychiatry team to learn more about the services provided im this area.

amar Samawi has been appointed as the Co-ordinator for the anniversary celebrations and joins the team having previously worked for Life Agape. Samar is busy preparing the activity of events but we can already look forward to a varied calendar of conferences and events of a medical, health, historical, musical, training and spiritual nature, with a particular focus on the local community.

Nazareth Hospital EMMS Artists Help Put Nazareth In The Picture
T
he hospital walls are looking brighter thanks to the fantastic donation of a collection of paintings by some of the UK's top illustrators as part of an international exhibition entitled, The Magic Pencil. The British Council donated 60 prints from original works on show at the exhibition which was curated by the writer and illustrator, Quentin Blake, who is best known for his illustrations in the children's books by Roald Dahl. The exhibition includes the work of Raymond Briggs of The Snowman, Charlie and Lola artist, Lauren Childs, and Horrid Henry illustrator, Tony Ross, and many more, and has travelled around the world. Joseph said, “Development in the hospital is almost entirely supported by charitable donations and grants, a situation that sometimes requires tough prioritisation decisions. Anyone who has ever visited a children's ward anywhere in the world will understand, however, the importance of the visual environment for children and their families.

“This donation from The British Council will not only give great pleasure to our patients and their families, but will also contribute to their sense of wellbeing, thereby assisting in the recovery and healing process. “The joy, movement and vitality these illustrations bring to the walls of our children's ward make a significant positive impact, made all the more special by the fact that they have been created by some of the most talented illustrators of our day.” The British Council is the UK international organisation responsible for educational opportunities and cultural relations, and works in over 100 countries.

Nazareth Hospital EMMS Groundbreaking Day for Nazareth Hospital
T
he Nazareth Hospital celebrated the official opening of the first cancer research laboratory in the city earlier in the year.
The Ambassador of Brazil, Her Excellency Maria Elisa Berenguer, cut the ribbon on the new centre, watched by an invited audience including representatives of the three hospitals in Nazareth and scientists and researchers from the University of TelAviv and Ichilov Hospital.

This is the first laboratory in the region which will allow scientists to learn about and to research the causative genes of the different types of cancers in the Arab sector in Israel and in particular the main genetic origin and risk factors of breast cancer among Arab women.
Breast cancer incidences amongst Arab-Israeli women are increasing, partly scientists believe because of environmental factors but also because of better reporting practices. Between 1980 and 2000 there was an increase of 37% in Jewish women with the disease and 140% in Arab women. Dr. Bisharat said: “The opening of the research laboratory is a leap in quality in Arab healthcare which will allow scientists to study and look at different cancer treatments in a different way taking into consideration the cultural and ethnic impact.� He also sees the research laboratory as a venue for future cooperation among the three hospitals in Nazareth in addition to other research institutions at the national level. Dr. Adel Jabbour, the Director of the Clinical Laboratory at the Nazareth Hospital will lead and manage the research laboratory.
History In The Making
R
ecognised as an historic occasion, early in the summer, under the auspices of the Israeli Minister of Health, a cooperative agreement was signed by representatives of the three local hospitals, including the Nazareth Hospital, representing a symbolic partnership for the future delivery of local healthcare. The agreement will see the French Hospital, the Italian Hospital and the Nazareth Hospital joining forces to improve co-ordination of services to prevent duplication and work towards enhancing healthcare in the area.

The occasion was attended by Joseph Main, CEO, the Mayor of Nazareth and The Deputy Minister of Health, Yaacov Litzman, who announced the approval of significant new facilities for all three hospitals including a catheterization unit at Nazareth Hospital, a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the French Hospital and a new section for oncology patients at the Italian Hospital. The Co-operative agreement was signed by Dr Bishara Bisharat, Head of the Nazareth Hospital.

School of Nursing
T
he School of Nursing has been extremely busy over the last few months and students are progressing well.
A real talking point has been the opening of a new cafeteria for our students. Although it is small, it has become a great meeting point and has been warmly welcomed. Over the Summer and Autumn we have been concentrating on extending our work and strengthening our partnerships with other organisations. An example of this is our partnership with Haifa University through which we have delivered our first semester programme earlier this year. To ensure the programme is meeting everyone's expectations we participated in an evaluation initiative which involved all the lecturers who participated in teaching as well as key staff. The results were very positive and it was good to hear that the overwhelming response was that the school is a beautiful building and conducive to learning. Staff are welcoming and willing to help, students motivated to learn and teachers showed a real interest in their work. Our BA programme students have just embarked upon their last semester and we await confirmation of permission from the Higher Council of Education to start another BA group. This year, we also started the School's first formal Bursary Programme, supported by The Sobell Foundation and Nazareth Project Incorporated, in the UK and the USA. A number of students received support to continue their studies. Partnerships are also being explored with the Galilee branch of Bethlehem Bible College, a local church and a Christian training company called Sigma.

PRAYER BOX Pray for our nursing students particularly those who are nearing the end of their training. May they enjoy happy and successful careers and be proud ambassadors for the hospital wherever they go. Pray also for the teaching staff who do such great work in guiding and inspiring their students with good humour and compassion.

Nazareth Village News by Megan Kelley
T
he Village Children's Programme is an initiative to maintain the connection between the ministry of Nazareth and local school children, through contributing to their education and welfare, by providing them with a safe place to play, learn, eat, as well as the opportunity to take part in a local ministry. In addition, the programme provides day camps and school groups with activities including an age-appropriate tour through the first century. Recently, this programme has seen very exciting developments involving children from churches half way across the world!
Children discover life 2,000 years ago
This new international relationship began when the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church chose a First Century theme for their Vacation Bible School. The theme complemented the church's project of raising funds to donate to Nazareth Village. The children from each church built up fast friendships via the exchange of letters and photographs. The Harrisonburg Mennonite Church and Franconia Mennonite Church youth groups have enabled Nazareth Village to purchase supplies essential for the development of the Village Children's programme.
Learning about Nazareth
The Village's volunteer children come from the community and are between the ages of five and fourteen. They typically come to Nazareth Village on Fridays and Saturdays, on school vacations, and during public holidays. By volunteering at the village, children learn about life in First Century Nazareth, the very location of their homes, schools, and communities.
The girls receive training in weaving, as they would have 2,000 years ago, while the boys work alongside the shepherd. As they learn about Nazareth during the time of Jesus, the children get to share a dynamic picture of First Century Nazareth with tourists. Nazareth Village always includes an element of the multicultural experience. Through the recent connections between foreign youth groups and the Village Children's Programme, the volunteer children are able to personally benefit from interaction with children from around the world. The friendship of the children from Harrisonburg Mennonite Church and Franconia Mennonite Church has, and will continue to go a long way to further the experience and the joy of the Village Children's Programme.

Seeds of Hope NAZARETH HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY SERVICE
L
ocated next to the chapel at the Hospital, the Chaplaincy team works as a voluntary ministry and currently ten volunteers attend three days a week to serve the Lord at the Hospital. Volunteers are from different churches and locations but their goal is to help support the patients admitted to the Hospital. Within the children's ward volunteers provide a specific programme once a week and in the Dialysis Ward, two days a week. They pray, encourage and counsel those who request assistance, providing an important support role and help for patients.

Our fourth annual retreat weekend took place in the West Bank in October. Staff, volunteers and friends of the hospital joined together in fellowship . This year the retreat was appropriately entitled, 'Our Spiritual Health'. Also in October, we held a special prayer meeting for long term friend and colleague, Professor Paul Kitchin, who is undergoing health challenges and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with him. The Chaplaincy team is very much looking forward to the anniversary celebrations and we will be holding an Ecumenical Prayer Service and study day in December which will be held in the chapel.

Making Friends L
uke 16:9 “I tell you, use wordly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is it gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Making or choosing friends is something for which we need God's wisdom and guidance.
1) Choose faithful friends Friends who are not believers will spoil your life, and possibly your family too. 1 Cor 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character.” Psalm 1:1 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.”
2) Choose friends with whom you can pray Daniel the prophet had friends he had chosen. As he was put in the position of interpreting the dream of Nebuchadnezzar he went to his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to fast and pray with them. As he did so, the Lord answered his prayers. When we choose “prayer friends” we have additional support for when we encounter crisis, and can ask them also to unite in prayer with us.
3) Choose spiritual friends Spiritual friends have experience to distinguish between good and evil. Hebrews 5:12 “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again.” Spiritual friends can judge everything.

It demands time We need to spend time in order to make friends. Time spent with a friend for a condolence visit, for support, for lifting him/her up, to rejoice together as they rejoice or mourn as they mourn.

W
e experience the blessing of acceptance into eternal dwellings as we gain friends with worldly wealth.
There is a story of a 90 year old man, who gathered all his children and grandchildren together on his birthday. They had collected $10,000 to give to him and he immediately gave it to the Bible Society. When he was asked why he did this, he answered “I want to be welcome in eternity. For many people will read the Bibles which I have sponsored and be saved and go to heaven. Then I can tell them they are my friends in Suheil and Eman Bathish with the mother of a volunteer e t e r n a l dwellings.�
Chapel Celebrations n Sunday the 13th November, a special prayer service was held in the Chapel to mark the beginning of our 150th year of celebrations. A number of speakers, including from the evangelical and traditional church communities, prayed and gave thanks for the work and ministry of the Hospital. The congregation were blessed with songs from the choir photographed and warm spirit of goodwill and appreciation from all in Nazareth.

SERVE Nazareth A Word from SERVE Nazareth Administration
e in the SERVE office have spent the past few months revamping the SERVE program and the look of our ministry. We have updated our material and tweaked the SERVE program to better reach the community of Nazareth. We now have three distinct SERVE programs that you can participate in: SERVE Internship, SERVE Associates, and Group SERVE. There is a description of each of these programs on the following page. Our job is one of the most encouraging. We have the amazing opportunity to meet and mentor volunteers from around the world and to watch them grow during their time in Nazareth. But not only do we have the opportunity to pour into our volunteers; we also are encouraged and challenged in our own faith by them. This past summer, we had several volunteers who went above and beyond in their ministries here. They were sharing about their love for Jesus everywhere that they went; whether that was at the gym or just around the hospital complex. Our participants have worked camps for both teenagers and children, taught English, helped lead local youth groups, volunteered at the local seminary, performed construction work, led groups at Nazareth Village, ministered in the hospital and much more. It is refreshing to see that the volunteers with SERVE are truly making a difference in Nazareth; not only through their ministry placements, but also through their everyday relationships. We are excited about what God has in store for 2012.

SERVE Nazareth Intern Program The 3 month internship has a dual focus: first to grow the Kingdom of God in Nazareth through your service and our second focus is to grow the Kingdom of God within you. Our hope is that interns leave Nazareth not only having made a difference in the community, but also impassioned to serve the Lord with all that they have. SERVE Nazareth Associate Program The Associate program is a flexible 1- 6 month program designed to fit into any schedule. Associates are similar to interns with the exception that they will be primarily self guided. This program is ideal for retiree’s or married couples. Group SERVE Group SERVE facilitates Christian groups in coming and serving in Nazareth. Whatever type of ministry project your group wants to do, like building projects, children's camps, prayer walking, or relational ministry, we can help your group come and serve.

S
ince the summer of 2010 when I lived in Nazareth, not one day has gone by without me saying a few words in Arabic or thinking about my transformation in that little town. To say that SERVE had an impact on me would be a gross understatement. The level of connectedness and understanding I gained of God’s own character and love is nothing short of astounding. It is one thing to learn and yet another to feel and believe. Being in SERVE allowed me not only to learn ways of loving and serving people, but it showed me that we can really only do so because we, ourselves, are tremendously loved by a Father unlike any other. Through SERVE, I started to learn more about what God asks of us, who He really is, and the abounding, deep, whole, and complete love He rains on us daily. I learned this through the affection showed to me by God’s own people in Nazareth, Christian and otherwise. I also learned this through our many speakers who have heard the call and obediently followed, and through connecting with people who looked and lived differently from me but still accepted me as I am. I believe we all bring a part of God to the table of humankind. Together we make a fuller picture of who He really is. Therefore, there is no knowing and loving God without knowing and loving His people. This is because He wears His people on His heart and thinks about and prays for us constantly. That is who God is: the one whose eyes rove back and forth through the earth finding ways to protect and better us. Arriving at this realisation was groundbreaking and absolutely revolutionary for me. I had finally found Him: in whole and in character. The process of discovering this was not an easy one and I have to say that I doubted along the way, but with the guidance of both the SERVE administrators and participants, an unwavering spirit of perseverance and the desire to truly know God, was instilled in me. God used my love of the town, the people, and the language, to reach out and pull me closer to Him. For this, I am grateful. My wealth in the Lord our God cannot be quantified. I fell in love with a people, a culture, and most importantly the one who protects and blesses them.

SERVE Nazareth Ministry Partner - Nazareth Village By: Gosayna Karam hey are SERVE volunteers and that is exactly what they do. They serve with their bodies, minds and hearts and they do it with a smile. Some smiles are lively, some peaceful, and some are cheeky. And with their smiles, they motivate and support the Nazareth Village staff.

At the Nazareth Village, the SERVE volunteers are offered a wide range of work possibilities. The work ranges from being a first century villager herding the sheep, building roofs, weaving the wool, baking the bread to packaging and office work. The skills and capacities of the volunteers are matched with the needs of the Nazareth Village. In each task given, the SERVE volunteers have taken it on with enthusiasm and responsibility. They are productive in their time with us and much is accomplished with their support. When the SERVE volunteers step through the doors of the Nazareth Village, they become part of a larger family of mixed Christians and Moslems. They work, eat and laugh, side by side with their new family. Their presence kindles the motivation for all those surrounding them. Friendships are established and are long missed and remembered after the volunteer leaves. SERVE volunteers are an asset to Nazareth Village in their spirituality and their sense of giving of themselves. Their positive attitudes and grounded expectations make them very easy to work with. To all the SERVE volunteers who have served with the Nazareth Village, we take the opportunity to thank you again. May the Lord’s blessing be upon you as you continue your life’s journey.
