Celebrating 107 years...

Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church was established in the year of our Lord 1917 three and half miles north of Rosenberg Texas in Fort Bend County. A far-sighted farmer pioneered in cutting away the dense forest known as the Brazos bottom became a viable, growing community. They were faithful, loving people with no community center, center, church or school. Neither was there a bridge to span the river to the nearest town. This grieved Mrs. P. G. Evans, a God-loving lady in the community. Mrs. Evans heart desire was culture for her people. The Island Lake Sunday School was started in vacant store with Sis Evans serving as Superintendent also as teach. Others who were part of the beginning Sunday School were Hubert Evans, Rev. Major Jones, Bro. David Smith, and Rev. Allen Evans, a deacon of Galilee Baptist Church. In 1917 a bush arbor was built and a revival conducted with Rev Page as the revivalist. Manu confessed Christ, among the first candidates baptized were Luella Luckey, Millie Evans, Florence & James Holiday, Raleigh Holiday, Adell Jackson and Parthinia Williams.

In 1917, Rev J. E. Warren was called as pastor. Charter members of the church were Sis P.G. Evans, Hubert Evan, Bro & Sis John Luckey, Rev. & Sis Major Jones and David Smith. The name Nazareth was given to Sis Evans in a dream and was accepted by the group.

In the fall of 1917, a church building was erected on an acre of land given by Deacon. Allen Evans. He joined the new church and became one of its first deacons along with Bro. Dave Smith and John Luckey. The church grew rapidly and was affiliated with the Mt Zion Lively Hope District Association, the State Convention, the National Convention and the State Board. It pioneered in organizing the first B.Y.P.U. in the area under the direction of the late Rev. H.L. Evans.

The church decided to move to more central location. In 1926, Deacon. Evans provided a site for the church in Rosenberg. Rev Warren continued as pastor until his death in 1933. The following pastors have also served: Rev. O.J. Davis, Rev. H.L. Evans, Rev. G.O. Jackson, Rev. J. Hillsman, Rev. T. R. Roberts and Rev. Charles Gibson. After five successful years Rev. Gibson resigned. Rev. E. D. Rayford acted as pastor for three years. Rev Wardell Hicks became Pastor in 1959. Under his leadership two lots were purchased. Rev. Hicks served as pastor for seven years.

In November 1968, a man filled with the spirit and a vision from God, Rev. A. L. Curry, became pastor. In a called meeting he shared his insight with the church. Pastor Curry, the deacons, and the church worked together and much was accomplished to bring this vision to fruition. When Pastor Curry arrived, Nazareth had only

two Sunday services per month that quickly changed as the church continued to grow, with as many as 50 believers being baptized in one day in the Brazos pool. Under Pastor Curry’s leadership the church purchased another building with two lots. Within a few years a new building was planned and blueprints were drawn up. In 1977, Pastor Curry was called to West Point Baptist Church in Galveston, Texas leaving Nazareth without a pastor. In October 1977, Rev. R. L. Allen became pastor and plans for the new building continued. After serving in Galveston for seven years, Pastor Curry was called again to Nazareth. Upon his return, the mortgage on the building was been paid off, three vans and tree buses were purchased as well as an additional ½ acre of land purchased for the church’s parking. Additions to the Fellowship Hall were completed including a new roof, having a bar-b-que house built, and a wide screen television purchased. A video and audio ministry was evolved as well. Praise be to God Almighty for his continuous, wonderful blessings. After serving a total of 42 years at Nazareth in March of 2010 Dr. A. L. Curry retired. Dr. Curry will always be remembered for his teachings and his wonderful works, most importantly his Love for Nazareth.

After eight months of prayer & patience on October 24, 2010 the church called one of her native sons to pastorate in the personality of Pastor Clinton Donnell Wallace.

Pastor Wallace previously served as the musician of the male chorus and later as the musician of the sanctuary choir. Pastor Wallace is the son of Dr. C.L. Wallace, the membership Pastor of Mother Zion Baptist Church in Wharton, TX and is also the grandson in the ministry of Dr. A. L. Curry, who recommended him to lead the church after his retirement. Pastor Wallace was the founder of Commissioned Baptist Church in Richmond, TX. On November 7th, 2010 Nazareth Baptist Church and the Commissioned Baptist Church merged together to form one powerful body in Christ That All May Be One.

Pastor Wallace currently serves as the 7th Vice Moderator of The Independent Missionary Baptist General Association. The Nazareth youth ministry participates in the E.S, Branch Memorial Musical each year.

After 8 years under Pastor Wallace’s leadership, Nazareth is still excited about the awe-inspiring leader and his teachings thru sermons such as, “Serving When Distracted”, “Having Fresh Visions for Future Victories”, “Let Me Be Great”, “Crime in The Church and “On the Road with Jesus”.

Nazareth is excited about the awe-inspiring leader the Lord has given us in Pastor C. Donnell Wallace, and the blessings the Lord will bestow.

Nazareth has completed the following renovations: New wood flooring and lighting in the sanctuary, church van wrapped, installation of new doors of main entrance…..this is only the beginning of Nazareth on the move making ministry happen!
