If you have ever watched The Voice you know the excitement that follows the “four chair turn.” Something catches the attention of each of the judges.

A certain note, unique quality, solid pitch, or some grand potential peaks their interest and they all want in.

In this issue of Blueprint we highlight several members of our Nazareth Family who are a voice for good in some capacity. Each of them has been a voice in word and action to help champion something significant in our world today.

Having a voice … whether that be in our ability to lead others, to speak up at a meeting, to take a stand, to vote … is a privilege that we should never take for granted. Our voices, both individually and collectively, have the power to make a positive difference in our families, our workplaces, and in our local and global communities as well.

Julie Foudy, retired American soccer midfielder, two-time FIFA World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist says: “DO YOUR HOMEWORK. FIND YOUR VOICE. BE AUTHENTIC. AND THEN DIVE IN WITH PURPOSE.” It is great advice and something we strive to instill in our young people today.

Margie Koys Novotny ‘79 Margie Koys Novotny found her theatre voice through a park district program when she was in third grade and she has never lost it. Naz classmates will remember her as part of the late 1970’s productions of “Anything Goes,” “King and I” and “Sound of Music.” She happily admits that performing was where she found her joy as a child and teenager. “I stunk at sports, but I could get up on a stage and find my voice.”

It’s a gift she has continued to pay forward to grade-school children for the past 20 years. Beginning as a parent volunteer at St. Joan of Arc, and continuing through her small business, Lucky Star Productions, Margie goes into Catholic schools to help students in grades 3-8 mount musical productions.

“I have been so rewarded to see the difference Drama Wednesdays make in the lives of these kids. Some of them might not fit in anywhere else, but with theatre, they feel like they are part of something special.”

She is cognizant of the fact that, though the faces and show titles might change, the lessons she learned from mentors like Debbie Soldato Hale ‘72 and Mike Sheridan at Nazareth, continue to remain true. “The idea that there are ‘no small parts, only small actors,’ translates in many ways in the lives of kids.

Every person has a role in making a show (or life) work right.” She also remembers Mr. Sheridan’s advice to “always be prepared because you never know what might happen on stage.” This is another lesson she had taken to heart, and used beyond the theatre.

In explaining why she has given so much of her time and effort to nurturing the youngest actors, Margie said, “There is endless joy in helping children find a whisper of voice and encouraging them to amplify it. All I do is help these kids discover what was already there.”

As if her shows weren’t keeping her busy enough, Margie is also helping to plan the Class of 1979’s 40th Reunion for

Homecoming Weekend, September 27-28, 2019. “We were one of the last all-female classes and I remember us as being so close-knit. Our reunion goal is to really honor the legacy of that class and to provide face-to-face opportunities to rekindle old friendships and maybe forge some new ones.” As with anything she does, Margie is bound to create something unforgettable.

Awareness

Maria Passafiume David ’82 Maria Passafiume David never set out to become a crusader, but life threw her some curveballs and she reacted in the ways she had been taught. “At Naz, we were presented with so many examples of how to serve others, whether at a soup kitchen or a nursing home. The Sisters modeled patience and grace, as did Mrs. Gurney.

Mrs. Gurney took the time to help us find what our strengths were. Sr. Pat Bergen taught us to find it within ourselves to be the best we can be and to go out and help others when we can. This is where I found my voice.”

When Maria’s son Alex was diagnosed with autism, she and her husband Bill took on the task of educating themselves and, in turn, educating others. “We have been Alex’s voice and advocates for the past 19 years.” The couple has participated in fundraising events including the Autism Speaks Walk, plus created their own advocacy group, Alex’s Army. “Autism is part of our lives and we will continue to educate and raise awareness on behalf of our son any way we can. Alex is smart and funny and we learn from him every day; he inspires me to be a better person.”

Dr. Kyle Hanson ’99 A VOICE FOR

Kyle Hanson has found his voice in the world of science and conservation and, specifically, fish; but it was not exactly a straight path. “I started at the University of Illinois with an eye toward going to law school before realizing that my heart really was not in that field so I switched majors to Biology.” The move felt right to him given his positive experience with science at Nazareth. “Not only did I learn the basic concepts that underpin any career in science, but I was also taught an appreciation for curiosity and understanding the world. I consider myself very fortunate to have had teachers such as Sheila Chilton Davis, Dr. Youngpeter, Sister Ellen and Aaron Schuetz, who made science fun, approachable and meaningful.”

Kyle’s biology summer internship solidified his career path. “Dr. Dave Philipp, of the Illinois Natural History Survey, was working on fish behavior and recreational angling. I was amazed that someone could have a career in a field that I considered to be the vacation of choice.”

After earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from U of I, Kyle moved to Canada to pursue his Ph.D. at Carleton University. “I was fortunate to have amazing experiences such as tagging salmon on the open ocean, spending summers snorkeling and catching bass at a biology station in

Ontario, and learning how to analyze blood Conservation samples in state-of-the-art biochemistry labs.”

He now works as a research fish physiologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Pacific Northwest, where he and his wife Amanda are raising their children.

Kyle’s conservation voice focuses right on the point where nature and human needs meet. “The reality is that people need resources – power, water, lumber, food – that require extraction that can take a toll on the land, animals and plants.

Our role in conservation is to make sure that we know the risks of these activities and have the necessary information to “Don’t forget that you minimize our impacts.” Kyle wants to ensure have a voice. In October 2010, the Davids lost their nephew, Phil Kaiser ’08, to an undiagnosed heart condition. “After we lost Phil, the family happened to learn about Young Hearts For Life (YH4L). It was totally an accidental encounter, but so worth it.” Maria found an outlet to help turn her grief into action, volunteering with the organization to bring their cardiac screenings to high schools, including Nazareth.

Maria, who also lost her sister to a heart-related condition, is passionate about EKG screening. “This 5-minute test could have saved Phil’s life so I am proud to help.

and even surgery.” It’s a cause that also caught the attention of Maria’s daughter Felicia ’13, who served on the junior board of YH4L. Felicia, in fact, considered a career as a cardiac sonographer before ultimately changing her major to special education.

“I encouraged Felicia to follow her heart and stay with what she’s passionate about.”

In fact, following one’s heart is the way Maria encourages people to find and use their voice. “When you look deep in your heart and advocate for your beliefs, you can make a difference. You can turn challenges around and be a voice of reason or positive influence in any situation.”

A VOICE FOR Service

Dr. Kristen Kierulf Mighty ’00 “I’m not sure that anyone who’s seeking a life in service ever travels a straight path,” said Dr. Kristen Kierulf Mighty, whose current role is as Executive Director of the Quinn Center, an organization dedicated to building an inclusive culture of justice, health and peace in the Proviso area. Certainly, this doesn’t seem the most direct career path for the math and science honors student, who earned Microbiology and Chemistry degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana before moving on to Northwestern University in the dual Ph.D. and M.P.H. program. While a career in research or academia may have been more expected, Kristen knows that God’s hand was guiding her “to what my heart wanted all along, to serve others.”

As a Naz student, Kristen wasn’t fully sure where her heart was leading her.

What she knew was that she wanted to excel at tennis (which she did all the way to the State level) and that she wanted to build the best possible academic resume to get her into college. She achieved both goals by sacrificing study halls and taking her arts requirements by mail so she could double up on math and science courses. “It is only now in retrospect that I realize I had advocates all along, working on my behalf to support my Type-A competitive personality.”

Even her choice to attend U of I was thanks to the work of her college counselor Mrs. Gurney, who helped her in the late stages of the college application process to not only gain admission, but to secure scholarships and funding.

“All along I thought I was going to go much further away, so when that didn’t work out, someone must have been fighting for me.”

Advocates and mentors have, in fact, played an enormous role in Kristen’s journey. “As a black, female scientist, I rarely found people who looked like me.” Instead, Kristen found men and women during her post-doc years who helped her gain confidence as a leader, who helped her know it was OK to choose her own unusual path and who opened doors of opportunity to her. She has tried to pay that back by mentoring others through formal organizations and career advising.

In her own career though, she questioned how she could use her skills and her deep knowledge to serve.

The job at the Quinn Center was not one she had gone seeking, but when it found her, she recognized the work of the Holy Spirit. She could use her leadership skills, make an immediate impact on the community where she grew up, and have more time with her young daughter. “I can now serve in both my personal and professional lives, putting me back into harmony.”

As Kristen continues to serve and mentor the next generation, she does so fully cognizant of the pressures young people face. “I encourage kids to be open and to be flexible. There is an enormous amount of pressure to have it all together, but it is important to know you don’t have to. It’s OK for your voice to change.”

The challenge to “be the voice” lives on in today’s students.

We are extremely proud of the many ways Roadrunners continue to be voices of Service and Unity.

TODAY’S VOICES Visitors from Le Puy Nazareth welcomed the Le Puy Youth Chorale to visit with us.

Our World Language and Choir students had the privilege of learning from, and sharing conversation and music with, these international visitors during classes.

“An ocean may divide us,” said Junior Cecille Nemeth, “but we share a similar love for music and the CSJ values.

I was touched to see how they would travel so far to share their talents and give joy to the Sisters of Saint Joseph.”

“That day illustrated the CSJ value of ‘the dear neighbor’ by allowing students from different continents to join together in song; it was really cool and a great way to connect even though we didn’t all speak the same language,” added Sarah Blair ’20.

FISH Prom Naz students were voices of friendship and fun at the 4th FISH Prom for Teens with Disabilities. The idea to host a prom began in 2011, inspired by the relationship and coordinated efforts of ASPIRE of Illinois and the Nazareth Friends in Service and Hospitality (FISH) Service Team. “Seeing the excited faces of the guests as they walked through the front door was the most memorable part of the evening. They were ecstatic to be there, and everyone looked amazing all dressed up,” said Anahi Marquez ’19.

“There are few nights that better exemplify what we mean when we pledge to serve our dear neighbor without distinction,” said Principal Therese Hawkins. Over 100 student volunteers shone a bright light of service, unity and abundant joy, welcoming guests with flowers, hugs, games, prizes, photos and lots and LOTS of dancing. “Fun” was the key word for both guests and hosts. We remain grateful to our Administration, Campus Ministry, the Congregation of St. Joseph, our student Steering Committee and the many donors and volunteers who made this night such a success.

“Being able to do FISH Prom my senior year was an experience that I will never forget. The night was filled with so much happiness. This event is one that really defines Naz and makes me appreciate the school even more,” said Joe Seidel ’19.

Young Alum Brooke Gawel ’17 made the Dean’s List in the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business for the Fall 2018 semester, representing the top 30 percent of students in their college.

participated in the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Week at Dominican University.

This is a platform for student-athletes, administrators, coaches and fans across the country to start the discussion, speak out on, and promote diversity and inclusion as key elements of studentathlete success.

Bryan Behrendt ’16 played for

the University of WisconsinWhitewater football team, who claimed their 11th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in the last 14 years and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III NCAA Playoffs.

Julian Love ’16 entered the 2019

NFL Draft and ended his college career on a high note. He earned first-team honors from four of the five requisite organizations that determine unanimous/ consensus status in addition to All-America honors. He was also a finalist for the Jim Thorpe and Lombardi Awards.

Addie Doyle ’15 received the Neville

Distinguished Student Award from Villanova University. This award recognizes students who have excelled academically while serving and leading the Villanova community.

University, was named to the AFCANAIA All-American Team.

John Kilcommons ’15, who plays

for the Dartmouth Football team, made the 2019 Football All Ivy Second Team for offense.

Alexia Petrovic ’14 graduated from the

University of Utah last May. As a member of the Women’s Tennis Team, she ranked in the top 100 in singles and doubles.

She also made the All-Academic team and received an ITA award for the Most Improved Player. She and her teammates earned the ITA Mountain Region Community Service Award after making an impact in the Salt Lake City community.

Kiley Roache ’14 published her second novel, The Dating Game, in March.

Class Notes Congrats to alumni Steve Gray ’06 and Maria Onesto Moran ’01, Band Director Mike Sliwinski and former staff member Katherine Fernholz Banasiak, all named as 2019 West Suburban Chamber of Commerce “Regional 30 under 40” recipients. This is an annual recognition of the region’s young professionals who are making a deep impact on our local communities.

John Gurney ’06 introduced an original song Home With Her, was named one of InTouch Weekly’s “Hottest New Country Stars,” and was a regular on season one of Very Cavallari on the E Network. He performed in Chicago in March, where Ashley McGee ‘14 spotted a fellow Roadrunner.

Jordan Hanson ’04 and his company, Illinois Brick, were featured in The Blue Book Building & Construction Network Who’s Who Fall/Winter issue.

Colleen Ryan ’06 was recognized as the Marquette University College of Education’s 2019 Young Alumna of the Year based on her commitment to education, children, and developing teachers in Milwaukee, specifically at the Hmong American Peace Academy.

was named Principal of St. John Fisher Elementary School.

Maura earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Loras College and a Master’s Degree from Lewis University.

LTC John A. Gabriel ’99 is

currently serving on the Army Staff in the Pentagon and takes command of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry regiment in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell in the spring. He and his wife Lauren have two daughters, Amelia and Audrey.

Nicole Rogus-Pulia, Ph.D. ’97, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center, has been awarded nearly $840,000 over 5 years from the National Institutes of Health-National Institute on Aging (K23 Award). The funding will support Nicole’s career development and research on interventions to improve the care of swallowing disorders (dysphagia) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Christine M. Palumbo, MBA, RDN, FAND ’71 received the

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics prestigious 2018 Medallion Award.

She is one of only eight registered dietitian nutritionists to receive recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the Academy.

Bonnie Rissky Harrington ’65 Trish Rooney ’87 was one of the

co-chairs for the Children’s Research Fund 60th annual Children’s Ball.

The black tie gala raised a recordbreaking $3.8 million to benefit pediatric medical research at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Catherine Adams Arredia ’79, MBA, celebrates her 5th anniversary with Ecolab in Spring 2019. Recently, she was promoted to the newly developed role of Carrier Relations Manager for Ecolab, its subsidiaries and legacy divisions.

authored her first book, Don’t Lift Up Your Hood and Cuss.

The memoir candidly recounts the loving, humorous, difficult and unexpected turns in the life of an overweight, shy and sheltered child of Chicago’s late 1940s South-side Pilsen neighborhood.
