A Letter from the President and Principal

Both of us, individually, could safely say that there are three things that have most greatly influenced our life’s journey: our faith in God, the love of our family and friends and the time we have spent at Nazareth Academy.

It is hard to believe that our combined total number of years at Nazareth (in one capacity or another) is pushing fifty-five. Time sure does fly! The time we spend here continues to have a profound effect on our view of the local and world community as well as our relationships with others. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve as leaders of such an outstanding school. Each year as we see a new class of students begin its journey at Nazareth, we are rejuvenated in our mission of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity.

We have both been mentored and inspired by the Congregation of Saint Joseph.

We both have witnessed the outpouring of dedication, hard work and vision which have accompanied decades of their influence, leadership and support. As we continually re-dedicate our own selves to the mission and charism of these remarkable women, we invite our faculty and staff members as well as Nazareth alumni to do the same.

Being attached to this legacy and interacting with others who serve in CSJ sponsored ministries help to shape our consciousness about the interconnectedness of life and our responsibility to uphold the value of educating the whole person.

As you read this issue of Blueprint, we hope you are reminded of the positive influences that have shaped your journey due to your association with Nazareth Academy. Thank you for staying connected and for helping us to “pay it forward” by influencing many generations to come!

Nazareth Academy an important step in

Life’s Journey

With 113 years of history to the school’s credit, you just never know where you’ll run into a member of the Nazareth family.

Whether at a concert in Chicago, a minor league baseball game, or a bed & breakfast in Pennsylvania, Nazareth alumni have carried the pillars of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity across the country and around the world.

These journeys are more than a move from one city to another. When current and former students reflect on their Nazareth experience, they describe journeys of the mind and spirit. Alumni credit Nazareth with providing the knowledge, confidence and inspiration to pursue a full life.

No matter how far-flung the journeys, Nazareth remains a shared part of our life experiences. The mission inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph, practiced by generations of talented teachers and carried in the hearts of thousands of alumni continues to unite us.

Nazareth

Nazareth Academy – the name still stirs up a sense of adventure, and the expectation that brand-new experiences lurk around the corner each and every day. Well over 50 years ago, I transferred to this enormous girls’ school with 315 classmates from a small girls’ school with only 20 in my class. What’s more, I LIVED at the school – our dorms were in the building on Brainard Avenue, long torn down to make room for modern life.

I was frequently asked what it could possibly be like to LIVE at the school. There were only a couple of dozen of us in 1960 when I moved into those dorm-like rooms, along with some wealthy Central American girls, and several other girls who went home on the weekends. My father’s sister was a nun, so he felt that was the best way for girls to be educated. The truthful answer was that the education as a “boarder” took many forms. Classes were intense, from advanced Latin homeroom to advanced Algebra with Sister Joan Marie.

To survive, I began getting to the classroom early in the morning to study with the smart girls who

took the early bus to get a head start. The rest of my education came from the widely varied experiences of the other boarders.

We were all girls attending Nazareth and the prevalent thinking was that one could concentrate on actual learning without the distraction of the opposite sex in the classroom.

The nuns were always willing to provide extra help outside the classroom, as were the lay teachers.

The expectations were really high, but after I got used to the sheer number of students in the school, I found it pretty easy to meet those mental challenges.

Beyond the classroom, the nuns on our floor encouraged artistic exploration, recommended great books and engaged in focused discussions about life and what could be ahead. These Saturday morning talks with Sister Maureen Therese and Sister Baptista also emphasized the assurance that girls mattered. I remember wondering how these nuns were so worldly? With their encouragement, I went on to earn the “All Nazareth Girl’ award at the end of my senior year.

I graduated from Nazareth with the clear direction that I could pretty much accomplish what I wanted. My degree in Foods and Nutrition from Rosary College (now Dominican University) gave me a broad major that I parlayed into my own food consulting business after about 10 years of being home while raising my children. Based on the sense of adventure learned at Nazareth, my business led me to have my own independent test kitchen, with such diverse activities as writing corporate cookbooks and developing prototype microwave ovens for a Korean company.

Fourteen years ago, my husband Ed and I moved to Pennsylvania, renovated a historic General Store and opened Landhaven, a Bed & Breakfast complete with a house concert venue on the premises. Every day brings more adventures, meeting exciting people from all over the world at breakfast, and endless new experiences. This bountiful life got a huge boost and great start from experiencing Nazareth Academy. I recommend it to everyone!

We know from our alumni that strong bonds are forged at Nazareth Academy. For most of our 113 year history, that’s meant lifelong friendships, but for some students it meant finding love and, eventually, marriage. For these alumni, Nazareth will always be the place they met their partner for a lifelong journey.

Mike Pauritsch HInsdale, Illinois

For Hinsdale’s Mike Pauritsch, civic duty is just a part of life. When he and his wife Mary Kay chose to send their daughters Katherine ’95, Colleen ’97 and Elizabeth ’97 to Nazareth, he knew he would find a way to be involved as a parent.

“Really, my goals in getting involved at Nazareth were two-fold. Of course I wanted to model that kind of value to my daughters, but being involved also allowed me to be more connected to the experience. Teachers and administrators knew me and knew they could talk to me.”

A Certified Public Accountant and partner at Mulcahey, Pauritsch, Salvador & Co, Ltd., Pauritsch put his financial knowledge to use at a time when Nazareth was making the transition from a Sisters of St. Joseph ministry to its own corporate entity. He explains the thought process this way, “Nazareth needed to borrow money in order to invest in the physical plant. In order to be as great a school as it could be, Nazareth had to incorporate. It was time for the next step.”

Pauritsch served as the first President of the Nazareth Academy Board of Trustees and continued to serve on the Board’s Finance Committee long after his daughters graduated. “My commitment to Nazareth has turned out to be a longer and more wonderful experience than I could have imagined when I began. I have come to know some incredibly wonderful people and feel a part of a true community.”

Pauritsch was in the ideal position to watch Nazareth grow as his daughters did. “Mary Kay and I knew that Nazareth would be the right place for our daughters. It was the perfect size to give them a shot at anything they wanted to do or be.” Not only did the school prepare all three of his daughters for post-high school success, those years also introduced Colleen and Elizabeth to their spouses. “They didn’t date during high school; but when they all met up after college, they shared the Nazareth bond that got them talking.”

In fact, Colleen wed Will Allison ’96 in the CSJ Motherhouse Chapel.

“I remember the Gospel referenced Nazareth and Father Jack Wall looked out over the congregation and said, ‘And people ask, what has Nazareth brought to the world? Just look at this.’ The wedding party and guests were filled with Nazareth alumni, parents and staff.”

“ My heart was stretched to embrace a new world,” explains Bergen. “ I’m not just talking about what I learned and who I met in the classrooms and corridors. The faculty took us to work on the west side of Chicago, to meet the children and families at Misericordia and volunteer with immigrants.”

These are the experiences that truly whet her appetite for a lifetime dedicated to service.

Still, when Bergen graduated in 1963, she did not predict joining the convent. “I had just spent an incredibly fun four years of classes, dances and dating. I thought I was going to marry my boyfriend and La Grange Park, Illinois have lots of kids.” But, by August of 1963, she could no longer deny her calling to the Sisters of St. Joseph.

After a rocky start, Bergen did join the convent, take her vows and Pat Bergen knew from the time her family moved to La Grange in 1952 spend her life ministering as an educator, advocate, campus minister that she wanted to attend Nazareth Academy. “I knew we couldn’t really and prayer partner. The Sisters of St. Joseph are formed in LePuy, France.

The Sisters of St. Joseph form their first permanent foundation in Carondelet, of St. Louis, Missouri.

The first Nazareth Academy, a rented house at 120 N. Spring Ave., La Grange enrolls six resident students.

1901 The school at Ogden and Brainard Avenues teaches children from six to eighteen, both boys and girls.

Peter Gates ‘90 A Coruña, Spain

“ Life is all about living and not watching time go by . . . live life with curiosity, a sense of adventure and remember to take advantage of every day! While in school, focus on your education and learn at least one foreign language.

You will be amazed at how it can influence your life and open doors to new adventures.”

Peter Gates’ journey has taken him from his Riverside roots, through the halls of Nazareth and all the way to Spain. He’s made stops to study, work and live in Ohio, Argentina, Los Angeles (where he earned his Master's in Latin American Studies and MBA from the University of California), Mexico City, Peru, Brazil, Italy, Colorado and, for the past 3 years, Spain. Gates currently works for Tyco International, responsible for the high tech consulting services team in Europe.

As a Nazareth student, Gates couldn’t have predicted this life of studying and working abroad. What he knew then was that he liked Spanish class with Mrs. Krick. “After having her as my teacher sophomore and junior years, I continued with Spanish as a senior. Mrs. Krick had a Spanish accent and would teach us vosotros which is not utilized in Latin America. It is so ironic that every day when I use my Spanish with the accent and grammar she taught me way back when, I still remember her, Nazareth and my classes.”

He earned excellent grades at Nazareth, but still found time to play tennis all four years, a skill which helped him work as a tennis coach during college. He was also part of the Math Club, “really because I thought math was fun. Math Club was a chance to really think through problems and issues.”

He didn’t have an international plan when he graduated in 1990, but he did plan to continue studying a language and a subject he’d come to love, going on to earn minors in both Spanish and Math at Miami University.

Gates remembers Sr. Terry Middendorf (currently Academic Dean and Director of Admissions) as the best math teacher he’s ever had. “I think I pursued math at the college and graduate level mainly because Sr. Terry had made it fun to learn.” Gates had the opportunity to come and thank her for that lasting impact when he was in town a couple of years ago.

Looking back on his years at Nazareth, it’s the relationships Gates remembers best.

“My family chose Nazareth because we wanted a Catholic school with high quality academics and a well-rounded approach,” he explains.

“The critical lessons turned out to be respecting others and creating long-lasting relationships.”

In addition to the academic foundation, these are the lessons that have served Gates on his international journey.

Gates offers some advice to today’s student body, “Life is all about living and not watching time go by...live life with curiosity, a sense of adventure and remember to take advantage of every day! While in school, focus on your education and learn at least one foreign language.

1984 1950 Nazareth on Park Road opens with three fully equipped science labs, a spacious music department and an auditorium that seats 1000 people.

1981 1974 Nazareth moves to its current location at 1209 W. Ogden Avenue.

In 1977 history had come full circle and Nazareth again became co-educational.

In 1981 Nazareth graduates the first group of young men.

Rooney Student Center, dedicated in 1984 by Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, gives Nazareth a regulation size gym.

21st century Nazareth continues its journey toward expansion and upgrades while upholding its core mission.

Improvements include an auditorium, athletic facilities, a new main entrance and continual upgrades in technology. Where will our journey take us next?

Class Notes Noreen Nolan Prine ’61 recently retired after

more than 20 years with Southwest Airlines.

Her eighth grandchild, Andrew James, was born on February 20, 2013.

The Class of 1962 congratulates Sr. Sue Torgersen who is celebrating her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph!

Jean Wojdula Yunker ’65 was recently inducted into the Coaches Wall of Honor at Niles North High School. Retired for the past ten years, she taught Physical Education and coached for District #219 for 33 years.

She currently participates in triathlons and half marathons, often medaling in her age group.

Kelly McClanathan Pierzynski ’95 was married on January 19, 2013. Standing up in her wedding were Kelly Kucera Weiland ’93, Liz Watson Fitzgerald ’95, Michael Kucera ’95 and Taylor McClanathan ’16. Many Naz alumni attended, including Kathy Kelly McClanathan ’64, Patrick Weiland ’90, Laura Pawlik ’95, Matt Powell ’95, Alyssa Winiecki Relyea ’95 and Katie Kucera ’98.

Kelly and her husband were married at St. Anne’s in Oswego.

Jennifer Barth Capozza ’96 married James Capozza in June in Orlando, Florida. Her sister Melissa Barth-Brasher ’98 was her matron of honor. Christine Connolly ’98 also attended the wedding.

After 11 years out of state, Dr. Elissa Kafka Kelley ’96 and her family are moving back to Illinois. She accepted a position at Archer Veterinary Clinic in Lemont. Her husband has a position at the VA hospital as a Peer Support Specialist. Their two-year-old son Aiden, 6 dogs, and 2 cats will be living in Oswego.

Nicole Rogus Pulia ’97 finished her Doctorate

from Northwestern University in 2012 and currently works at the University of WisconsinMadison as well as the VA Medical Center in Madison. Her husband, Michael Pulia ’97, is a doctor of Emergency Medicine and also works at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

and her husband Eric are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, James, born on May 14, 2012.

Carl Sandburg High School since 2008 and has recently formed M & P Presentations LLC with a co-worker as an opportunity to give motivational presentations to high school students.

Elizabeth Burnell Wilson ’05 married Scott Wilson on July 21, 2012. Several Nazareth alumni were part of the wedding party or in attendance, including Alex Czerwien ’05, Kate Foody ’05, Kristine Lockwood ’05, Missy McCrickard ’05, Patrick McGinnis ‘05, Andrew Steffen ’05, Joe Voss ’05, Scott Wilcox ’05 and Kirstin Graef McGinnis ’06. Elizabeth is a high school special education teacher and Scott is an accountant.

They just bought their first home in Brookfield.

Jill Memmel ’06 was married to William Brown in July 2013 in Burlington, WI at the YMCA camp where they first met.

Michael McCambridge ’03 and Susan Richmond ’04 were married on March 2,

2013. Several Nazareth alumni were part of the celebration at Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, including Christopher McCambridge ’99, Michael Pellegrino ’03, Lauren Rapciak ’04, Barbara Sikora ’04 and Stacey Williams ’04.

Lauren Schick ’10 graduated from the University of Illinois Business School in three years and has been accepted into the Masters of Accountancy Program at Illinois. She will complete her studies next spring and then intern at Grant Thornton in Chicago.

As Nazareth Academy welcomes each new class of freshmen, we also bid a fond goodbye to a graduating class setting off on a new journey.

As the 210 members of the Class of 2017 begin their Nazareth journey, they have only begun to create their legacy. They are still finding their way, learning the routines, discovering what it truly means to be a Roadrunner. The road ahead of them is filled with class assignments, service trips, sporting events and new friendships.

Meanwhile, the 211 graduates of the Class of 2013 have moved on to 22 states and 79 colleges, carrying with them lessons learned in the classroom, on the field and stage, and in thoughtful moments of retreat.

They are forever connected to each other and to this place.

Over 11,000 alumni have been a part of the Nazareth journey!

Class of 2013 Valedictorian Sarah Swade and Salutatorian Matt Rasey

In four years at Nazareth they grew in mind, faith, heart and spirit.

They accomplished great things academically, boasting AP Scholars, National Merit Scholars, National Merit Commended Scholars and Illinois State Scholars. Every morning on my journey to school, I can’t help but notice the cars around me. They are old and new; all shapes, sizes and colors. But they all have at least one sticker or magnet that identifies them as a car from Naz, whether it is a simple white “N” or a magnet supporting one of the 23 different Naz sports.

When I am driving other places and see one of these stickers, I find myself wondering who the car belongs to: is it a teacher who has helped me grasp the complexities of a foreign language; a friend who helped make the Mondays less bitter and the Fridays more fun; a guidance counselor who’s made the college process less intimidating; a coach who’s taught me about discipline and teamwork; or a senior leader from my freshman year who taught me that high school doesn’t have to be a scary place?

In fact, Nazareth has been the opposite of a scary place for me. It has been a home where I have discovered so much about myself both personally and professionally. Nazareth has been instrumental in forming the person I have become, someone who tries to study hard, help others, have a deeper relationship with God, and seek understanding of all people I meet.

In other words, Nazareth has taught me to value the pillars of scholarship, service, spirit and unity. In addition, Nazareth has been the place where I figured out the subjects I am passionate about, and has set me on my professional path.

I am incredibly grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity to attend this school that has shaped me so much. As I look toward May and graduation, I know that Nazareth and the amazing people I have encountered while here will be identifiable throughout my life journey long after it moves from the parking lot of magnet covered cars.

10 years of the Unity Scholarship

The educational experience at Nazareth Academy has always been centered on educating the whole person: mind, body and spirit. This educational philosophy is anchored by the four pillars of the school’s mission – Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity.

In 2003, Nazareth Academy began to provide financial incentive for its fourth pillar, with the creation of the Unity Scholarship. Each year, the $1000 renewable scholarship has been awarded to at least twenty incoming freshmen who have exhibited leadership during their years of elementary education. The scholarship is based on the belief that these young men and women will continue to exhibit leadership during their high school years.

Over the past ten years, Nazareth Academy has not been let down in this belief. The Nazareth legacy left by these scholars is one of leadership, pride, achievement and involvement. We are proud to showcase just a few of these outstanding Unity Scholars.

Christina DalPorto ‘07 What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

I was always interested in Nazareth because it had a great reputation as a strong academic institution. I also knew that I wanted to continue Catholic education in a co-ed high school. Naz had all of these important components and offered countless extra-curricular activities that interested me.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

From a young age my parents instilled the importance of academics and being a strong leader. I think it was their guidance that shaped me and made me a candidate for the Unity Scholarship. The scholarship simply reinforced the values that my parents instilled and provided me the means to become involved. Being involved was important to me and I tried to take part in many different aspects of high school including athletics, drama, academic clubs, campus ministry, volunteer opportunities and social clubs.

Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

I attended University of Iowa with a major in Psychology and minor in Chemistry within the Pre-Optometry program. At Iowa I was heavily involved in the Newman Catholic Student Center, club volleyball, and as a Resident Assistant for 3 years. After undergrad I pursued my dream of becoming an optometrist. I am currently in my third year of optometry school at Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University. I’ll be back home for my first rotation in the spring and I’ll get to see my youngest brother (the 3rd and final DalPorto) graduate from Nazareth, which will be very exciting!

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

Nazareth provided me, most importantly, with a strong faith base, which has been integral in guiding me since high school. In addition, I’ve wanted to be an optometrist since sophomore year of high school and Naz provided me with the academic background necessary to succeed in college and graduate school. Nazareth gave me many opportunities to become involved and to try new things. All of those experiences have contributed to who I am today.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

Some of my favorite memories include Kairos, preparation for the spring musicals, weekend volleyball tournaments (especially the trip to Iowa), the mission trip to Belize, and eating lunch with my friends each day senior year.

Sarah Furjanic ‘08 What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

When I shadowed, I felt like I was already part of the Nazareth community.

The teachers were engaging and supportive. Students were involved in many different activities. The curriculum was strong. Living out Catholic values was emphasized and integrated into daily activities. There was an indescribable energy throughout the whole day. I knew Nazareth was where I belonged.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

The Unity Scholarship challenged me to do more with my time at Nazareth. It wouldn’t be enough to just do well in the classroom. pg / 10

Receiving the scholarship was a call to lead.

I took on many different leadership roles through clubs and athletics. I definitely tried to make the most of those four years.

Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

I graduated from Creighton University in May of 2012 with a BSBA in Accounting. I work in Chicago at one of the Big Four Accounting firms, Ernst & Young, LLP, doing partnership tax for the Financial Services industry. I’m preparing for a move this fall to Omaha to be with my fiancé who is in medical school at Creighton. Even with the move I will continue to work for EY. My fiancé and I are getting married next June in Hawaii.

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

Nazareth’s academic programs were key for shaping my college experience. I had some great

math teachers. Nazareth allowed me to double up my sophomore year and take Geometry and Algebra II/Trig concurrently. This experience and others got me ready for the rigors of college courses. Other classes taught me critical thinking skills that I use daily. My experience at Nazareth also taught me a lot about time management skills through balancing school and activities.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

It would be impossible to list just one favorite memory. I had an incredible Kairos experience as a participant and leader. I was a member of the cross country and softball teams and have tons of memories from each. I loved team bus rides with Mr. Nache’s mix tape, sophomore year gym class with Mr. Danko and playing The Word Game with Mr. Jurasas (and beating him on one occasion!).

Ryan Pacyga ‘09 What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

Daniel Woods ‘10 Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

Nazareth had a profound impact on my father (Greg Pacyga ’85).

He always had great stories to tell about his days playing baseball and football or his involvement in Campus Ministry. I understood that Nazareth was deeply rooted in service and leadership. I was also eager for the opportunity to play for two great coaches, Lee Milano and Tim Racki.

In December 2013 I will graduate from Roosevelt University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. In January 2014, I will begin my pursuit of a Doctoral degree in Criminology. With that, I hope to once again follow in my father’s footsteps and work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have continued my leadership path with Dean’s List Recognition all four years, captain and twotime All-Conference selection as a member of the baseball team, Ambassador for the Roosevelt University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and board member of the Roosevelt University Law & Justice Society.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

The award guided me to be a better student, both in the classroom and on the field.

I learned how to become active in all facets of the Nazareth community and the importance of being a leader in my everyday life, not just on school grounds.

My favorite memory is winning the first Sectional Championship in Naz Baseball history. It was the culmination of four years of hard work, determination and selflessness from all of the members and coaches of that team in 2009. I was fortunate enough to share that experience with all of my best friends.

Carolyn Turek ‘10

What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

I was drawn to Nazareth’s commitment to community; it’s a family in all that it does. It was this cohesive, family-centered environment that best allowed me to grow.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

I participated in Youth Initiative in grade school and I was excited to continue my participation in YI at Nazareth. I was heavily involved in Operation Snowball, Freshman Orientation and Red Ribbon Week. I also enjoyed participating in other school activities that developed leadership abilities, such as Class Board, theater, band and newspaper.

Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

I am currently in my final year at Notre Dame and loving every minute of it! I am a Resident Assistant and involved in psychology research at the Center for Children and Families. I have also worked at the Kovler Diabetes Center at the University of Chicago Medicine. I am currently applying to Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs and I hope to work with children in a medical setting as a clinical psychologist and diabetes educator.

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

From day one, Nazareth encouraged my involvement in school activities that fostered my ability to work with others. My involvement in Youth Initiative encouraged my interest in psychology and in studying the ways that people communicate and interact; and my involvement helped me to realize that I am most happy when working with other people.

Most of all, though, the feeling of community at Nazareth influenced my decision to attend Notre Dame, a place that also holds community dear. Growing up in places that consider community and unity central to their identities, like Nazareth and Notre Dame, has shaped my career and life goals to help others. I hope to do this through working in the field of psychology.

What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

Every person I talked with from Nazareth spoke of their school not just with pride, but with affection.

Alumni truly missed it and were grateful for the time they had there, enjoying every minute. I wanted to feel that way about my school. Today, I still do.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

It challenged me to try new things, which led to me becoming a more well rounded person.

When I was a senior, I was asked to speak to the incoming freshman recipients of the Unity Scholarship. I told them it was their invitation to venture outside of their comfort zones and take risks. It meant joining teams, clubs and organizations that would challenge you to better yourself.

Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

I attended the University of Notre Dame. In Fall of 2012, I had the opportunity to intern at the Pentagon for a semester in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Having a great interest in politics, I will be graduating early in December of 2013. After that, I intend to go to law school in Chicago.

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

Nazareth’s pillars of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity represent not just the core values the school preaches while you attend, but the key fundamentals one needs to succeed in life. I have found that maintaining these pillars has led me to achieve success beyond the halls of Nazareth Academy.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

Kairos would be a favorite memory because it allowed students to really get to know classmates that they weren’t particularly close with. It was, aside from graduation, one of the final moments of the journey that made us a family. The other would be working Freshman Orientation as an upperclassman and seeing the nervous look in the eyes of many in the incoming Freshman class, knowing that soon they would come to love Nazareth Academy and sooner than they’d think, they would be sad to leave it.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

My best times at Nazareth were those spent in theater, where I made my closest friends. pg / 11

Megan Pelino ‘11

What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

Religious education is very important to me. When narrowing down my choices for Catholic high schools, Nazareth was the best fit because of the people and the opportunities for extra-curricular involvement.

My sister also attended Nazareth, had a great freshman year and I hoped for a similar experience.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

The Unity Scholarship served as a constant reminder of Nazareth’s mission. It reminded me of why I chose Nazareth and the person I could become if I embraced all four pillars of scholarship, service, spirit and unity.

Please describe your journey since leaving Nazareth.

After I graduated from Nazareth, I started college at the University of Notre Dame. I am currently pursuing a major in Sociology and a minor in Science, Technology and Values. After I graduate, I hope to attend graduate school for a Master’s in Public Health or begin a career in Global/ Public Health. I’m currently studying abroad in London at Notre Dame’s joint campus, taking classes, interning at Education First, and loving every second of it!

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

I strongly believe that my passion for service was ignited at Nazareth. After being involved in Campus Ministry, Youth Initiative and Roadrunner Club, service grew from being an “extracurricular” to a way of life. I try to embrace the idea of service in all that I do and I think that comes from my experiences at Nazareth. I also believe that I was strongly shaped by my involvement in athletics at Nazareth, playing both varsity soccer and varsity golf for all 4 years, which exposed me to true leadership. My passion for service and understanding of leadership have led me to a lifestyle and career path that I don’t think I would have found without my time at Nazareth.

What is your favorite memory from Nazareth?

I have so many, but I have to say “Tornado Day.” I had just joined the golf team and we were headed out to one of our matches after my first day at Nazareth. We packed up Bus 27 (where most of my greatest memories took place) and headed to Decatur for our match. While we were driving, a nasty storm popped up causing tornado warnings all over the Chicagoland area. While the students at Nazareth were taking shelter in the hallways, Bus 27 was cruising through the wind, rain and hail. After stopping under some bridges for shelter along the way, we made it to our match and began. We played 8 holes and all of a sudden the heavens opened and the darkest clouds I had ever seen rolled in. We ended the match and were shuttled to the clubhouse where our team stayed until 10 p.m. because the storm was so bad. Those hours in the clubhouse with my new friends and teammates were some of my greatest high school memories and showed me on the first day of school just how special the people were. Those hours foreshadowed the amazing memories to come.

Carl Jackson ‘13 What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

The thing I liked about Naz was the sense of family I felt when I shadowed. The students and teachers treated me very well.

I was really into sports and most of the coaches encouraged me to meet guys on the team and go to the games. They just made me feel welcome.

How did the Unity Scholarship affect your journey in high school?

I wanted to make sure that I lived up to the challenge and didn’t just coast through. Beyond athletics, as high school went on, I tried joining more clubs and got as involved as possible.

I’m not sure I would have tried as hard as I did in all the areas of Naz life without the Unity Scholarship.

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

Nazareth did a great job of helping me become a well-rounded person. In the first few weeks of school at Saint Louis University, many people dropped challenging courses. I am proud to say that Naz taught me how to get my work done in an orderly fashion so I don’t fall behind. I have already been offered an internship at a law firm and have joined numerous clubs at college to make sure I stay involved.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

My best memory at Naz was my junior year Baseball season when we finished third in the state. I still talk to all the guys from that team and occasionally we all get together and talk about the good old days (only two years ago).

Lindsey Torphy ‘14 What originally drew you to attend Nazareth?

I initially became interested in Nazareth Academy when my older sister ( Jessica Torphy ’10) attended.

She was involved in Campus Ministry and the Theater Department, which drew me to the unity that Nazareth represents. I wanted to become part of a community that works to

How has the Unity Scholarship affected your journey in high school?

Being a recipient of the Unity Scholarship really motivates me to create my own legacy, by being involved in theater, my school work and my faith. I am so grateful for the Unity Scholarship because of the impact it has had on me as a person. It has allowed me to better myself and others in the community.

How do you think your experience at Nazareth has influenced or shaped the path you’ve chosen?

My journey at Nazareth has been such a positive force that I almost don’t want to leave. Nazareth Academy has become my second home, one that welcomes me every morning.

What is your best/favorite memory from Nazareth?

There are so many memories that I have made at Nazareth. I am so grateful for having been given parts in plays and for participating in the amazing Masses we have as a school. I will never forget all that Nazareth has given me.

Kristen Stojetz is celebrating her 20th year as an alumni-employee at Naz where she has served as teacher, Assistant Dean, Director of Student Activities, Girls Basketball Coach, Girls Cross Country Coach and, currently, Director of Marketing and Recruitment.

Can you describe your experience as a student-athlete at Naz?

I had a great experience as a student-athlete at Naz. Time management was always one of the challenges between practices, games and studying/ homework but all the great relationships as part of a team and the athletic competition were always worth it.

Playing three sports gave me the chance to meet and work with many different people. Balancing academics and athletics was a challenge; but, my lack of free time forced me to develop better habits. I still believe that you get more done when you have less time to waste!

How did playing sports in high school shape your life’s journey?

I learned a lot about the skills needed to be successful in college and the workforce from my coaches. I also knew in high school that I would like to coach someday and am very grateful I have been given that opportunity.

The teachers and coaches I had during my years at Nazareth inspired my career path and helped lead me to where I am today.

How do you hope to inspire today’s student-athletes?

I want them to enjoy their experience. In today’s environment of MORE practice, MORE play, players forget to enjoy the sport. I encourage them to cherish both the highs and lows. Don’t just be a great athlete; be a great student-athlete so you can make a difference in the world. As a coach it is my job to help the athletes improve their skills. That is the easy part. I want the girls I coach to be good people in the world. If I have taught them how to display good sportsmanship, to be responsible, to have a sense of pride in themselves and for Nazareth, I have done my job.

I hope to pass on the knowledge that I have gained from my own high school coaches regarding both baseball and life. Baseball skills are important, but so are the teaching aspects of the game, such as sacrificing personal stats for the success of the team, understanding how your individual role benefits the team, hard work and discipline.

What was your proudest moment as a player? As a coach?

I don’t know if there was one moment as a player. I was proud to be a part of the teams and the successes we had, especially winning Conference Championships in Baseball. My proudest moments as a coach were when Varsity won the Summer State Title in 2010 and when the Sophomore team won the ESCC Conference Championship this past spring.

Booster Club When it comes to the strong tradition of Nazareth Athletics, no group is more vocal than the school’s Booster Club. Whether they’re organizing Split-the-Pot, distributing car stickers and lawn signs, or hosting a Senior Day event, this parent organization can be counted on to support Nazareth.

“We support student-athletes, sports teams and Nazareth as a whole,” explains Booster Club Co-President Tracey Henick. While their work is most visible within the Athletic Department, their fundraising efforts have benefitted the school in ways outside the fields and weight

How do you hope to inspire today’s student-athletes?

What was your proudest moment as a player? As a coach?

I was a member of the 1989 softball team that won the conference title in the Private School League. To my knowledge, this is the only softball conference title in school history. As a coach, I am most proud when our teams have good chemistry. They work hard for each other; they respect each other; they have fun playing the game with each other; and they develop the kind of lifelong memories that I deeply cherish.

room. Booster Club is responsible for the front entrance sign on Ogden and one of the Prom buses each year, as well as financial assistance to bring the Young Hearts for Life Program to Nazareth last year.

“Not only are Nazareth’s dynamic parent groups a great way to stay connected to your child’s high school experience,” says Henick, “they provide each of us the opportunity to ‘boost’ Nazareth spirit.” To that end, the Booster Club is looking to make this year’s Roadrunner Rally, traditionally held in conjunction with basketball games, a bigger spirit event for the entire Nazareth community.

“We always aim for 100% participation from Nazareth families, but this can be as big of a commitment as a parent wants.

From club officers, to Booster Reps to general members – every level is critical to our success,” explains Henick. An $80 annual membership not only provides admission to all Nazareth home games, it also supports the club’s operating budget. “The free admission is just a perk. The real benefit of membership is the knowledge that you are giving back to Nazareth students.”

Nazareth Academy may have kept its home in La Grange Park for 113 years, but the school’s students, faculty and alumni travel the globe each year. They embark on journeys in pursuit of educational enrichment and in service of others, spreading Nazareth’s mission around the globe.
