Two Years In: How Nazarene Ministers Are Building Retirement Security

The 403(b) match program has delivered over $6.6 million to local church ministers in its first two plan years—and a new benefit launching in 2026 could reach many more.

When the benefits board of NBUSA approved the replacement of the Annual Pension Supplement (APS) system with a new matching contribution program in January 2024, the goal was straightforward: reward Local Church Ministers (LCMs) who actively save for retirement and give their churches a reason to support that effort. Two full plan years later, the results show a program gaining momentum—but still carrying enormous untapped potential.

that number had grown to 1,943, with 323 new participants joining and 86.6% of 2024 recipients returning for a second year.

Ministers and their churches together contributed $10.8 million in 2024 and $11.8 million in 2025, a 9.7% increase. That growth is a meaningful signal: participating ministers are saving more each year, not just getting started and stopping.

Across 73 US districts and more than 4,200 local churches, approximately 5,500 Lead/Senior and Associate Pastors are eligible for the match each year.

match. And local effort isn’t limited to straight 403(b) contributions: qualifying student debt payments also count, making the match accessible to early-career ministers still repaying education loans. In 2025, 45 ministers used this provision, up 32% from the year 3

before, with NBUSA matching more than $46,000 in student debt payments alone.

The single biggest factor determining whether a minister receives a match is how faithfully their church supports the NBUSA Fund. Ministers at churches contributing 100% to the Fund are eligible for the full 50% match—and they participate at 33 times the rate of ministers at churches below the 50% minimum threshold. The leading district in the country achieved a participation rate above 61%, proving what’s possible when church compliance and pastoral engagement align. However, the national Nazarene participation rate still has considerable room to grow.

The Foundation Match— effective January 1, 2026 By the end of 2025, more than 3,000 eligible LCMs served at qualifying churches, but neither they nor their church-employer made any local effort contributions. Starting in 2026, the new Foundation Match provides a 100% match on the first $250 of local effort—meaning a minister and/or their church needs to contribute just $250 for the minister to receive $250 from NBUSA in the next quarterly match. This dramatically lowers the entry point, and qualifying student debt payments count for this also! There has never been a lower-cost way to get started.

The quarterly participation trend carries an encouraging story inside the numbers. While the count of match recipients declines each year from Q1 to Q4, the reason isn’t disengagement—it’s success. In Q4 2025, 761 ministers received no match payment simply because they had already reached the $2,500 annual maximum earlier in the year, a 234% increase over Q4 2024. These ministers are saving so actively they exhausted the full annual benefit prior to Q4. (See Fig. 1 below.)

If you haven’t started contributing to your 403(b) account, 2026 is the year to begin—so please act on what you hear. Do the next right thing for your retirement; the Foundation Match (see box to the left) will make that first step easier than ever.

What Is a Trump Account & Why Would You Want One?

BY AMY ARTIGA Something big is happening this Fourth of July. Not only is it our nation’s 250th anniversary of declaring our independence from Great Britain, but Trump Accounts are launching!

What is a Trump Account?

A Trump Account is a new type of investment account for minors that was established by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of July 2025. As the official government website states, they aspire to “jumpstart the American Dream” as they are “building long-term financial security for millions of children” (trumpaccounts.gov).

The accounts allow contributions of up to $5,000 per year of after-tax money and are automatically invested in the stock of American companies. The funds are inaccessible until age 18, at which point they can be used for college, to purchase a house, to start a business, or left to grow until retirement. No taxes are due while the money stays in the account, and the growth (and any funds that were not taxed before being invested) is taxed as ordinary income when it is withdrawn from the account.

Why Open a Trump Account?

Free Money The number one reason many people are opening Trump Accounts is to get free money. For children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, the US Treasury will automatically deposit $1,000 into their accounts. To help even more children, the Dell Foundation has pledged $6.25 billion towards Trump Accounts. They will provide $250 for each child under age ten who is not eligible for money from the U.S. Treasury and lives in a zip code with a median income below $150,000.

For children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, the US Treasury will automatically deposit $1,000 into their accounts.

Invest for the Future Trump Accounts also provide a new avenue to invest for a minor with different features than the current options. A common way many parents are saving for their children is through 529 plans, but those are limited in use to only educational expenses. Trump Accounts are more flexible in that they allow the money to be used to start a business or purchase a home as well. UTMA (Uniform Transfers to Minors Act) and UGMA (Uniform Gifts to Minors Act) accounts are another option for investing a child’s money, but they give the child unfettered access to the full account at the age of majority, which is between 18 and 25, 5

depending on the state. Trump Accounts are much more restricted than UTMA and UGMA accounts.

Get a Head Start on Retirement Under current law, the only opportunities available to save for retirement in a tax-advantaged way are through employer-sponsored retirement plans (such as the Nazarene 403(b) plan) or IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts). Minors are not often eligible for employersponsored retirement plans, and they must have earned income from outside the home to be eligible for an IRA. Therefore, unless you have a child model or a teen with a job, there isn’t really any way to help them get a head start on retirement savings. With Trump Accounts, there now is. The accounts can be funded even if the child does not have any income and can be left to grow tax-deferred until retirement.

Why would anyone think about retirement for a kid who hasn’t even left the house yet? The magic of compounding interest is based on time. The longer money is invested, the bigger it can grow. For example, if you deposited $5,000 into the account of a newborn and it grew at a 7% rate, by age 65 they would have $406,364. If you waited until that same child was 18 to invest, then they would have $120,228 at age 65. If they don’t invest that $5,000 until they start taking retirement seriously at age 45, then at age 65 they will only have $19,348. As you can see, time makes a big difference when it comes to investing.

Let’s add in some tax planning strategy. If you put $5,000 into a newborn’s account, at age 18, it will have grown to $16,900. At that age, the child can convert the account to a Roth IRA by paying income taxes on the growth. In a 12% tax bracket, the tax on $11,900 of growth is $1,428. Now, those funds can grow in the Roth IRA until they become $406,364 at age 65. Since they’re in a Roth IRA, everything in the account can be withdrawn completely tax-free.

That’s the power of tax planning and compounding interest.

Trump Accounts can have a negative impact on college financial aid, so it’s important to consider all the pros and cons as you decide what type of account to use for your children.

The Christian Funeral

BY DARON BROWN Two of the core duties of a pastor are to “preach the Word” and to “comfort those who mourn”.1 These responsibilities converge in the Christian funeral.

The funeral service is one of the last remaining settings in which clergy have a welcomed public voice. Hearers, confronted by death, are more receptive. They want to know what we believe about life and death. They are hungry for rituals and words that make sense and meaning. In the absence of time-honored Christian ritual, people create their own rituals that lack substance.

Without weighty Christian words, people opt for trite sayings and folk-theology.

Funerals are public occasions for Christian worship. Funerals are gospel-work. They witness to the community and the wider world about the story of God. A person’s funeral is the other bookend to their baptism.

Funerals never come at convenient times. As much as possible, the pastor should clear their schedule and give serious attention to the funeral service and ministry to those affected. Hold a listening session with loved ones before the service. Ask questions. Invite stories. Take notes.

Get a sense for the person’s life. Doing so will help the family grieve and will help the pastor create NBUSA Quarterly

despair, suffering, and death. For some, it was a tragic accident that led to sudden loss and unforeseen grief. For others, it was a long stretch of suffering that took its toll on the whole family. Regardless, we must be honest about what went wrong. They already feel it. Name what they feel. Make space for lament.

a personalized message. Pastors who use the same funeral message each time, only to change the names, miss out on great opportunities for meaningful ministry.

In Accompany Them with Singing: The Christian Funeral, Tom Long says, “a funeral is about the intertwining of these two narratives (the gospel story and the life of the deceased).2 At a funeral, the faithful community gathers to enact the promises of the gospel and the convictions of the Christian faith about life and death, as they are refracted through the prism of the life of the one who has died.” At a funeral, we tell two stories. If the deceased person lived well, they wove the two stories together throughout their life, making the pastor’s work simpler and somewhat effortless.

Walter Bruegemann’s work on the Psalms3 provides a helpful homiletical map for the funeral message.

The pattern of Orientation, Disorientation, and New Orientation offers a structure to faithfully preach the Word and comfort those who mourn.

Orientation is a season of order and stability. Life is generally comfortable and predictable. Typically, this describes the early life, or most of the life of the deceased. It includes birth, family, and upbringing.

Stories of schooldays and descriptions of hobbies are appropriate. Tell about career, marriage, and family.

Simply put, narrate the life of the deceased. Knowing and sharing someone’s story at their funeral is a humble privilege.

Disorientation brings the bad news. Our deathdenying culture chooses to ignore this reality. In the Christian funeral, we refuse to shy away from disease, Summer 2026

New Orientation is what God has done in response to the bad news. God has come to be with us. Jesus entered death. Christ is risen. Death loses its sting.

Sin is robbed of power. Victory is delivered. Grace is abundant. Hope is activated. Worn platitudes will not suffice. People need to hear what God has done with death. They need to hear what we believe about the resurrection of the dead and the life to come. Call them to hope. Allow the story of the person’s life and the gospel story to intersect in the New Heaven and the New Earth. Paint a picture of their loved one, given their unique personality, at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Invite hearers to imagine their loved one (and themselves) in the age to come.

People need to hear what God has done with death. They need to hear what we believe about the resurrection of the dead and the life to come. Call them to hope.

A pastor is called to preach the word and comfort the mourning; few responsibilities are more sacred than standing before the people and weaving the story of a beloved life with the story of the gospel.

Resource Stewardship Located in a prominent place at the entrance to our office is a sign which reads “It’s God’s Money,” We believe that and recognize it on a daily basis. We know our ability to provide benefits to those we serve is only possible through the faithful support of God’s people from our portion of the Funding the Mission contributions from local churches and districts across the U.S. In Colossians 3:23, Paul wrote, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (NIV). This is our approach towards the stewardship of the resources entrusted to us, and, in light of that, we need to be transparent and accountable about their use.

Take the Detour

BY MARY REARICK PAUL Have you ever taken an intentional detour? I was in Dallas a few years ago and decided I needed to go to Waco, Texas. Why? I wanted to see Magnolia Farms.

I’ve watched so many shows with the Gaines’s, it felt right to stop and see what had been built over the years.

There are also detours that you take because of a deeper sense of direction. You re-route your plans in ways that don’t make sense. When a college student, I was walking home from work and had a distinct sense that I needed to go out of my way and stop at a nursing home. Why? I didn’t know and I was tired. Nevertheless, I took the detour to spend some time with a woman that I had been occasionally visiting. What I didn’t know was that God was going to use her to speak into my life in powerful ways that I still hold near to my heart.

In the fourth chapter of John, when reading the story about Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well, we often miss the significance of the fourth verse when it says, “But he had to go through Samaria.” Why did Jesus have to go through Samaria? If you were to look at a map, Samaria is on the way to Galilee. But what we might miss is that for centuries, Samaritans and Jews who occupied neighboring lands and practiced similar religions were deeply divided. As in all disputes, there was a long history of hurt and pain. The result was that Jewish people would avoid Samaria and take a longer route to avoid contact.

So why did Jesus have to go through Samaria? It all begins at the well in Sychar. For the original hearer of this story, a meeting of a man and a woman at a well would cause an expectation. Abraham finds a wife for his son, Jacob, at a well.1 Moses meets his wife, Zipporah, at a well.2 Wells are a place of romance and marriage. They would connect that this was a type of love story, but this love story has a twist. We discover this woman does not need another promise of marriage but something much more.

The love of Jesus is expressed in a deeper way. In this encounter, we find the longest dialogue Jesus has with anyone in the Gospels. This woman’s story is changed Summer 2026

and enriched as she engages Jesus in conversation around questions of theology. She has an understanding of her faith tradition and therefore the ability to challenge, to wonder, and ultimately to be convinced.

Jesus shows her great respect as she asks important questions. Her approach is not like the Pharisees hoping to trick Jesus but rather as one who is hungry to hear and learn like a student with a rabbi.

Sometimes people have created a life story for the woman out of some details: she came to the well at noon, she had been married five times and she was not married to the person she lived with. From these details, it is often assumed that she was ostracized from her community and made poor moral choices.

I would ask us to consider other options. Given the limitations of women’s choices, the reasons for having five husbands would not have been hers to make. These losses could have been because of death, divorce (often for being barren), or a social custom of being given to a household. We encounter here a woman with a deep history of pain and trauma.

I would propose Jesus had to go to Samaria because this woman who had great pain and great thirst mattered to God. And through this woman a whole village of people who mattered to God came to know Christ. And by watching this unfolding scene, the disciples came to know that taking a detour can bring you into the center of places you might not otherwise choose but can change your life and open your eyes to people who matter to God. It might not make sense in the moment, but there are gifts of grace in the detours. Check your internal Google map for the day and add the addendum, “and whatever detour God has for me.”

Hiram Reynolds and the Journey that Changed a Church

BY STAN INGERSOL Hiram Reynolds sailed from San Francisco on December 16, 1913. He was not alone. Ten Nazarene missionaries sailed with him to take up their assigned posts in Japan, China, and India. The steamship Tenyo Maru delivered them to Yokohama harbor on the start of the Japanese New Year.

This trip by Reynolds was freighted with significance. He intended to circle the globe. He held two positions in the Church of the Nazarene. He was executive secretary of the Department of Foreign Missions, and he was a general superintendent. He traveled in both capacities. As missions executive, he was making a personal visit to the foreign fields so that he could know the fields firsthand. As general superintendent, he was transforming the office from one that essentially had been American and therefore national in scope into one that was international and truly general, not just in name but in fact.

Over the next few weeks, Reynolds adopted the pattern that would characterize each phase of his global journey. He visited the stations already established, he consulted with missionaries and mission superintendents of various denominations, soliciting their advice on where the Nazarenes should establish new work, and he visited potential sites that he or his consultants thought might be promising.

He paid careful attention to local customs and culture, taking extensive notes. And throughout, he peppered the church with articles describing his travels and observations. These were published in Herald of Holiness, the church’s flagship periodical, and in Other Sheep, its monthly missionary magazine.

Through a constant stream of communications, Reynolds was promoting cross-cultural missions.

This was important. The church had been knit together by the merger of three groups from different parts of North America. While agreeing on much, the three groups each had its own peculiarities. Reynolds wanted to draw them closer together through a common commitment to overseas missions. He wanted missions to be one of the glues that held them more tightly in a common life and fostered the inner reality of union.

Reynolds resumed his tour, sailing to Shanghai, where he was met by Peter and Anna Kiehn, who had been with him while crossing the Pacific. They formed a party that visited various locations. In China, Reynolds followed the same pattern of visitation and consultation.

He then sailed from Hong Kong to Calcutta, India, arriving there on March 26. His time in India was interesting. On the 29th, Reynolds participated in a baptism service in the Garo Hills at which 45 people were administered the sacrament. But in Calcutta itself, he discovered a dismal situation at the Hallelujah Village. There were irregularities, he sent three missionaries back to America, and he dismissed an Indian woman who had co-founded the Hope School for Girls.

The remaining personnel were teachers, and the mission needed to be headed by a minister, so Reynolds discarded his itinerary and assumed direct superintendence of the mission for the next few months. While running the mission, he worked on his correspondence and arranged to move L. S. Tracy to Calcutta.

Once the Tracys were in place, Reynolds was free to visit other work in India. He left Calcutta on June 10 and sailed to South Africa, arriving on July 7. He was met by Harmon Schmelzenbach, who took him to Swaziland, where Reynolds stayed at the Peniel Mission and joined in the life of the missionaries there.

Reynolds went on to Cabo Verde, hoping to visit John Diaz, but this did not work out. He used the time there, instead, to consult and observe. He then went to Great Britain. In Scotland, he met with Rev. George Sharpe, founder of the Pentecostal Church of Scotland. They discussed the potential for Sharpe’s group to join the

Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene, and this did, in fact, occur the following year and was finalized at the Fourth General Assembly (1915).

Reynolds sailed from Liverpool and arrived in New York City in late October. His trip around the world had taken ten months. He took a camera with him and documented the work, the customs, the cultures, and the people through a combination of photographs and documents. Dozens of his photos appeared in his book, World-Wide Missions (1915).

At every district assembly he conducted, Hiram Reynolds advocated for cross-cultural missions.

Through his persistent advocacy and leadership, he laid the foundations upon which an international church evolved.

MCI vs Alzheimer’s Disease and Treatment

BY STEPHEN A. WILSON In the last NBUSA Quarterly issue, this article discussed Alzheimer’s Disease vs. normal aging.

This issue we will add in the term Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and treatment options. Currently, effective treatments either slightly slow the rate of decline or address symptoms; none cures or reverses the disease.

MCI is a noticeable decline in memory and thinking skills greater than expected for age but does not significantly interfere with daily life. It can be an early sign of dementia, but not everyone with MCI progresses to more severe decline.

MCI and dementia both involve cognitive decline, but they differ in terms of severity, progression, and impact on daily life. Key distinctions between normal aging, MCI, and dementia are:

• Dementia demonstrates cognitive impairment severe enough to interfere with activities of daily living.

Normal Age-Related Memory Changes Normal aging involves mild cognitive changes that do not significantly interfere with daily functioning. Aging lessens some functions—think eyes, joints, or hairline.

The same happens with the brain. Mental processing speed, responding to multiple tasks or stimuli simultaneously, working memory (ability to temporarily hold and actively process information), and episodic memory (recall of recent events) decline gradually beginning in early adulthood, while vocabulary, semantic knowledge (meaning, concepts, relationship

between words and ideas), and procedural memory (unconscious, long-term memory—like tying shoes and reading) remain relatively intact. The rate of learning new things declines with age, but long-term memory capabilities remain relatively stable. These changes are nuanced and most older adults continue to engage in longstanding pursuits, solve problems, and learn new things.

Mild Cognitive Impairment MCI is defined by impairment on neuropsychological testing with maintained daily function—people remain able to perform ADLs independently. On cognitive screening, MCI often corresponds to MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) scores of 20-25, but preserved independence with ADLs. Over two years, 15% of people older than 65 years with MCI will develop dementia; however, MCI does not always progress and may fluctuate or even revert to a person’s baseline cognition.

Dementia Dementia is characterized by cognitive impairment severe enough to interfere with daily, social, or occupational functioning. Help is needed to perform basic or instrumental ADLs. MoCA scores are typically less than 20 with gradual cognitive changes over time leading to loss of independence with ADLs. Treatment Options For MCI: Some people use combinations of vitamins or non-prescriptions products, e.g., B vitamins (B6, B12, and folic acid), omega-3 fatty acids, or probiotics.

Evidence on these ranges from mixed to inconclusive to doubtful. The best evidence is for B vitamins in people with high homocysteine levels. Vitamin E does not improve cognition. Ginkgo biloba, non-steroidal antiinflammatories (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxyn), omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D and calcium, and statin medications may help other things, but not MCI or dementia. The good news is all of these are generally safe when taken as directed.

Summer 2026

The real winner is exercise: regular physical exercise (6 months of training) likely improves some cognitive measures. Brain exercises (puzzles, games, learning new skills, social interaction, card games) support memory, attention, and problemsolving skills. These are good treatments of medical problems that can affect the brain (e.g., diabetes and hypertension). Symptomatic dementia medicines are not beneficial for MCI. For Dementia: Treatment options include both symptomatic and disease-modifying therapies.

Symptomatic therapies: Cholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine) are approved for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia.

Memantine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, is approved for moderate to severe dementia and shows benefit when combined with donepezil. These medications provide modest benefit on cognitive tests but have limited effect on prolonging time to institutionalization.

Disease-modifying therapies: Lecanemab and donanemab are newer FDA-approved anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies for Alzheimer’s disease in patients with MCI or mild dementia. These drugs can decrease brain amyloid and slow cognitive and functional decline by 27% and 36% respectively, which equates to about 0.5-0.7 points less decline on an 18-point scale 18 months after treatment. There are risks that require safety monitoring.

Brexpiprazole has FDA approval specifically for treating agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia. Improving behavioral symptoms can help patients and caregivers.

Non-pharmacologic interventions including cognitive training and stimulation, aerobic exercise, mental activities, social engagement, and cardiovascular risk factor (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) control, regularly sleeping 7-9 hours, and eating a balanced diet that includes bright colored vegetables and fruits are recommended across the spectrum.
