Reger: Complete Works for Piano Solo [12 CDs]

Max Reger’s complete works for solo piano on 12 CDs. “Reger was, after all, a concert pianist, and he clearly had a good ear for the instrument’s capabilities. Working in the 20th century meant that the instrument he had in mind was closer to today’s grands than anything Beethoven, Schumann, or even Brahms would have known. So when he wants to put some weight into climaxes, or even sudden sforzandos, he can rely on the instrument itself to provide the drama. Markus Becker gives excellent performances of these works.” – MusicWeb International (Haenssler Classic)

The film is complemented by a bonus 60-minute recital by Yulianna Avdeeva, Zlata Chochieva, and Francesco Piemontesi. (Naxos)

Dring: Complete Works for Oboe

Madeline Dring was born into a musical and theatrical family and studied with Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Dring wrote a number of works and arrangements for the London Symphony Orchestra, which are collected here. (Chandos)

Bellini: Indomita

“Indomita inhabits very different territory in placing big scenes from bel canto operas alongside Verdi... It’s an album that aims high and makes huge vocal and interpretative demands, but Buratto for the most part rises to the challenges she sets herself, and much of it is simply thrilling.” – Gramophone (Pentatone)

1CD# PTC5187409 $17.99

Michael Daugherty: Blue Electra

“I thought Daughtery might write a Hollywoodesque depiction of (Amelia) Earhart’s disappearance, but his writing is more reticent, and therefore more affecting. The coda too, effectively suggests the unknown ending to Earhart’s life story. This is a wonderful new work, played with sensitivity and bravura...” – The Classic Review (Naxos)

Stravinsky: Le rossignol

1CD# 8559955 $19.99

“François-Xavier Roth and the period-instrument Les Siècles are no strangers to Stravinsky’s scores premiered by the Ballets Russes and they are alert to every precise detail here. Lucile Richardot plumbs the depths impressively as Death, and Cyrille Dubois is affecting as the Fisherman, his light lyric tenor with its distinctive flutter appealing. Jean-Sébastien Bou is firm-voiced in the brief role of the Emperor.” – Gramophone (Erato)

1CD# EAO762404.2 $19.98

Bach: Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2 [2 CDs]

“Following his 2021 recording of Book I, Aaron Pilsan presents Bach’s complete second book of the Well-Tempered Clavier. This set mirrors the technical command and clear voice leading of the first, perhaps with a slightly freer style. Pilsan employs modest but intelligent pedal use and shows clear sensitivity to Baroque style in ornaments, tempi, and dance character, balancing assertiveness and dreaminess with stylistic integrity.”

– The Classic Review (Alpha)

2CD# ALPHA1034 $26.99

The Complete Songs of Ravel [2 CDs]

“There’s some excellent singing. Lorna Anderson, poised and lyrical, does wonders with the Trois Chansons of 1915, in which bitter humour gives way to intimations of absence and loss in the First World War. Sarah Dufresne sounds exquisite, above all in ‘Ballade de la Reine morte d’aimer’, where breathtaking high pianissimos signal the moment when the Queen’s soul leaves her body.” – Gramophone (Signum Classics)

2CD# SIGCD870 $27.99

Mendelssohn: Sacred Choral Works

“Recordings devoted to this repertoire don’t come around as often as you might think – top-flight groups such as The Sixteen or the Monteverdi Choir have thus far given it a wide berth – so it’s a pleasure to welcome this beautifully prepared and sincerely performed survey from the Latvian Radio Choir. The high vaults of the exquisite Lutheran Church of St John in Riga impart a ringing resonance to their sound...” – Gramophone (Ondine)

J.S. Bach –

A Life in Music, Vol. 2 –The Weimar Years

Mahler:

“This second volume of early Bach from Les Arts Florissants is another thoughtfully rich exploration. Undogmatic about forces or format, Agnew achieves from the outset an exceptional alliance between singers and instrumentalists, evident in the sublime obbligato oboe-playing of the opening sinfonia of No. 12 and the way it sets up the darting afflictions in the French-style tombeau.” – Gramophone (Harmonia Mundi)

1CD# HMF8902728.2 $23.98

Symphony No. 5 / Paavo Jarvi

“I’ll go for broke and say I don’t know a better Mahler 5 than this one, since in addition to Järvi’s care over every dynamic, there’s a sense of live electric charge which makes the ends of the Scherzo and Finale above all hair-raisingly brilliant.” – BBC Music (Alpha) 1CD# ALPHA1127 $20.99

Serpentes Ignei in Deserto (Hasse)

“Vocal stars align in this stunning world premiere. Where countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński’s dramatic flair communicates visceral horror at God’s chastisement, countertenor David Hansen’s gift for surprise in sequences and cadenzas evokes the chutzpah of Eliab. Of the two principals, Philippe Jaroussky is a majestic Moses, striding athletically through two arias, one blistering and anger-filled, the other lyric and reflective.” – BBC Music (Erato) 1CD# EAO239904.2 $19.98

Missa tu ed Petrus / I Fagiolini; Robert Hollingworth

“While much has been made of the polychoral tradition in Baroque Venice, Benevoli’s work shows that Rome, too, boasted a similarly extravagant tradition of sacred music that exploits the contrasts and combinations of multiple choirs of voices and instruments, creating colossal blocks of sound.” – BBC Music (Coro)

1CD# COR16208 $19.99

Choice

An English Pastoral

“If reflective, melancholy, and/or morose music is what feeds and elevates your soul, than this new recording may very well be the perfect panacea for you. Aside from the slightly more animated Scherzando second movement of Ian Venables’ Sonata for Violin and Piano, and the closing Dance by Ian Venables, all of these carefully curated pieces share a common British Isles sensitivity, hence the title of this album.”

“The Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and choirs under Nagano demonstrate clear affection for the work, performing with sincerity and commitment. 2SACD# BIS-2720 $42.99

Still: Songs & Piano Music

“The mezzo-soprano Yajie Zhang deploys precise intonation in From the Hearts of Women, and her Midtide is particularly affecting, full of the pensive feeling Still dictates. But the baritone Gabriel Rollinson is the real star here. He has a healthy, fast vibrato – plus a true calling for Still’s mature, “universal” aesthetic, which sought to bridge the music of Europe and the United States.”

– The New York Times (CPO)

1CD# 555627-2 $18.99

American Voices / Pacifica Quartet; Uniting Voices

“Affectionately and adroitly played, theirs is a very impressive performance indeed, with buoyantlysprung rhythms underscoring the folkish elements of this much oversubscribed work to the degree that virtually every bar sounds freshlyminted. Particularly memorable is the cellist’s winningly under-stated playing in the Lento slow movement.”

– BBC Music (Cedille)

1CD# CDR 228 $19.99

“The disc is the first of two which will comprise Kuula’s complete songs. It should be said right off that soprano Jenni Lättilä and pianist Kirill Kozlovski exceed all expectations in their performances. Ms. Lättilä’s singing is especially notable for the varied characterizations in each song, and her enunciation appears flawless.” – MusicWeb International (Toccata Classics)

1CD# TOCC0719 $20.99

“This debut recording by husbandand-wife piano duo of Lukas Geniušas and Anna Geniushene (runner-up to Yunchan Lim at the 2022 Van Cliburn competition) beats a revealing path through 20thcentury Americana. Four works date from the 1930s, including Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and Copland’s El Salón México.” – The Guardian (Alpha)

Manuel de Falla: The Three Cornered Hat

“Manuel de Falla’s cosmopolitanism is on full display here, with the Spanish elements of the music being descriptive rather than elemental. Georges Prêtre – The SWR Recordings [8 CDs]

“Given the quality of the recording, playing and conducting and the selection of real masterpieces it makes for an enjoyable listen from start to finish for any listener. Bach: Testamant – Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin / Rachel Barton-Pine [2 CDs]
