Welcome to the inaugural NAWIC London & South East Regional Conference!

We are delighted that so many of you are here, and I would like to extend my congratulations and thanks to the brilliant London & SE committee who have worked so hard to organise this conference and all of the regional events over the past year.

I would also like to thank our speakers and emphasise that the theme of the regional conference, “Taking the driving seat�, is so important for women in the construction sector. Indeed, in my view this is key to our career development and progression. I have had the pleasure of attending a session with one of our guests, Susan Room, organised in London previously, and genuinely consider that, that kind of experience, and the support that NAWIC lends to its members helps us move forward and advance our careers.

As you may know, NAWIC is a national organisation and we have active regions across the country, Scotland, the North West, the North East, and the Midlands. For example, the North West committee members are organising the National Conference on 15 November in Manchester. This event is free to NAWIC members and we would encourage you to attend. This year the National Conference is geared towards what

you, the members, want from NAWIC as an organisation, and the theme is “Your NAWIC�. We consider that this will provide a unique opportunity for our members to feed back and help us take NAWIC forward. If you are unable to attend we would still appreciate your support for this and all of our endeavours on social media.

Turning to another region, NAWIC North East has gone from strength to strength over the last year, and my thanks go to the talented individuals who have joined the regional committee. The team have organised CPD workshops, which have concentrated on developing leadership skills and building business confidence, and we were delighted that they were a huge success and attracted many women from the construction industry. Earlier in the year in March, NAWIC NE also organised an Inspiration Day at Hartlepool College, which aimed to inspire young girls to consider a career in construction. Also, NAWIC NE recently launched their first Thursday networking event, which aims to increase our membership and share best practice across the industry.

We also have a new group in Ireland that has recently formed and we will be in touch soon with their news and events.

As many of you will know, we are undertaking big projects such as the Image of women in construction with the amazing photographer Morley Von Sternberg. This is an exciting and ground breaking project, the concept being to properly showcase the passion of the women working in construction and the fantastic work that we are all doing. We have also been turning our attention to our national social media presence, actively recruiting volunteers for our new national committee and will be redeveloping the national website later this year.

I hope this gives you an idea of what we are all doing for NAWIC and ultimately cannot do without your continued support through your membership. If you have any thoughts and ideas please do let us know, and do not hesitate to contact me at chair@ nawic.co.uk.

In 2018, the UK has celebrated 100 years since the first female were granted voting rights, NAWIC UK its 15th anniversary and I, my 5th year Anniversary as the London and South East Chair.

After all these years I have seen NAWIC London and South East grow both in terms of membership and influence. I have also seen our Committee of volunteers and collaborators consolidate our presence as a vehicle for change within the industry.

The region’s achievements would not have been possible without their generosity and hard work and I am both proud to have shared this journey with them and grateful for their contribution. I hope that by shining a light on these fantastic role models I will inspire others to get involved because our industry needs for all of us to get involved.

I particularly want to thank Morley Von Sternberg, whose work The Image of Women in Construction has captured the imagination of the industry. Morley has volunteered his time and professional know how to shine a light on amazing women who are performing jobs most people outside our industry have never even heard of. The wonderful colours and rich details in his portraits challenge in every possible way any stereotypical views of our industry.

I remember the day when the idea sparked, at the Crown Tavern in Clerkenwell, the pub where Stalin and Lenin first met in 1905. We joked and wondered whether the project would be able to live up to such as historical significance. Three years on, it is fair to say that we are well on the way to creating a change inspiring project.

And inspire we must, as the challenges which lay ahead partly due to the Skills Gap and partly due to Brexit, will require for us to come together, as a team, an meet the demands of the ever-growing population of Britain. And although I am confident that the women in our industry, with their determination and resolutive nature will be key players during the transition, as a minority, we will be needing support.

I hope today will be the first step for each one of us to look around our own environment, identify challenges and possible allies and take action.

Regional update

By the end of 2018, our team will have delivered another fantastic year.

In the first quarter, our skills building seminars helped attendees explore who they are within their teams, build their resilience, develop a business plan and understand how their brains work. And this autumn, we will learn about health & wellbeing and the opportunities to be found in the role of the Design Manager.

We will have visited building sites and complete projects and enjoyed collaborations with the institutes and other diversity driven organisations and events. Our members will have been able to see us at the Women in Construction Summit, the WICE Forum and even the European Women in Construction Summit where we will be sharing, with the rest of Europe, our work.

One of our fondest memories for this year will, no doubt, be our day at the Oval cricket ground with 450 girl guides and 30 NAWIC volunteers. An experience all of us will cherished

At the end of 2017 we published our 2017-19 Regional Strategy identifying our drives and targets for a two year period. Today we would like to give you an update: Membership growth (since 2017) 20% CPD Compliance: Our designated CPD Committee Member is currently going through the process of validation.

Communication: With a new website, we have improved and streamlined communication for members to be able to access up to date information at any time.

Next step is selling tickets and memberships from the website.

Resources: Our team has increased in size to be able meet the increasing demands of the network.

Clarity of Roles: We are creating dedicated roles to further improve our lines of communications with our members and provided each of our team members with access to a NAWIC email address to facilitate the administration of enquiries.

LDN & SE Strategy 2017-19, an update

Collaborators: We are in the process of formalising relationships with our collaborators in order to extend the benefit of those to our entire network.

Legacy: Having completed the photographing side of The Image of Women in Construction project, we are about to populate the website which we hope will become a go-to resources for schools and colleges.

Impact Beyond NAWIC: During the past year, we have collaborated with diversity led organisations through events and projects and participated in round tables and papers with The Young Women Trust, The Pink Shoe Club and The FT. We have also been part of the WICE Awards Forum, WIC Summit and before the end of the year London Build as well as WIC European Summit.

Through this relationships we are increasing the impact of our network beyond our membership and benefiting a wider community.

Repeatedly, studies show women do not apply for jobs or promotions unless they are 100% qualified for the job. Unfortunately, they also show that women are less likely to put themselves forward to attend training, conferences and networking opportunities.

In contrast, “in order to progress professionally, one cannot solely rely on knowledge and good work. At the managerial level, visibility counts for 90% of success. Sharing best practice

NAWIC London & South East Conference 2018

Our research shows that one of the strengths women bring to business in general and the construction industry, in particular, is creative problem-solving.

Throughout history, women have created solutions to overcome a particular challenge and yet this is not something most people know about. The fire escape, multifunctional kitchen furniture solutions, solar heating and workplace ergonomics are just a few examples of solutions to problems with a female authorship.

We want to show that our industry can provide the framework for innovation and that there are many ways in which this materialises, with women actively seeking to implement changes which will benefit the industry as a whole.

Our own work at NAWIC is having an effect in the industry with projects such as The image of women in construction (with Morley Von Sternberg) being received very positively, but we know that in order to overcome the challenges ahead, all of us have to be part of the redefining our industry.

Hence the conference will be geared up to inspire and empower attendees to look around and take action to make a difference within their own environment and the industry as a whole without the need to wait to be given the opportunity.

Mandy Rutter is a psychologist and counsellor, who specialises in improving the mental heath of employees, managers, and Senior Leaders within all areas of the workforce.

Mandy has worked with a wide range of employers including Nationwide Building Society, AXA, British Airways, Network Rail and Skanska. She started her career as a school counsellor and moved into supporting employees through Employee Assistance Programmes. Mandy specialised in workplace trauma and supported employees affected by 9.11 bombing, and more recently worked in Manchester following the Arena bombing. Mandy’s approach to day to day resilience is taken from the education and empowerment given to people after traumatic events.

Mandy regularly devises and delivers training programmes on specific aspects of mental health including depression, anxiety and suicide. She has written widely in professional journals about the importance of the Line-Manager’s role in managing employees with mental health conditions, and the importance of Senior Leaders in creating a workplace culture that promotes emotional resilience and positive mental health.

Susan Room Coach

Susan Room is a professional voice and executive coach who helps people think and speak with greater confidence and clarity. She works one-to-one and with groups for clients including EY, the Financial Times, and several global financial and technology firms. She is a popular guest speaker, particularly at women’s events, and speaks and coaches pro-bono for the 30% Club.

Prior to coaching, Susan was group marketing director and Executive Committee Member of Danish ISS A/S, JLW (now JLL) and Lafarge Tarmac (now Tarmac). Whilst raising her son she worked as an independent consultant – notably advising the Chairman and management team of global engineering partnership Scott Wilson prior to its flotation and subsequent acquisition by URS then AECOM. During this time she also designed and built a sustainable home with her architect husband Timothy Ball, with whom she co-founded jhd Architects.

Susan is trained as a Professional Certified Coach, and is a member of the International Coach Federation. She holds a Master’s degree in Voice Studies with distinction from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, is a member of the Voice And Speech and Trainers Association (VASTA) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Lucy is a features writer for Construction News, covering social issues and business trends in the construction industry.

Lucy has led Construction News’ mental health campaign, Mind Matters, since 2017.

The campaign has influenced construction firms to change their business practices and approach to mental health and has won national awards such as mental health charity Mind’s media award for publication of the year in 2017.

Lucy has also conducted investigations into diversity in the industry and is currently working on Construction News’ campaign Inspire Me, which aims to help women in construction to advance their careers.

She was also identified as one of 30 young journalists to look out for in 2018 by public relations and affairs body, MHPC.

Danna Walker Panellist, Women Shaping the Industry Panel

Danna Walker is an architect and founder of Built By Us, a social enterprise which is on a mission to diversify the construction sector. Her career spans over 25 years in the construction and built environment sector and has encompassed a variety of roles from shop floor electrician, to Architect and strategic projects lead at the Construction Industry Council.

A passionate advocate for the industry, the common thread throughout her career has been a desire to improve the built environment directly as a practitioner, and the industry by making a tangible difference addressing the challenges of accessibility, skills development and improved diversity and inclusion.

As an architect, Danna specialised in regeneration, housing, educational projects and community engagement and is now part of the Built Environment Experts (BEE) network for CABE/Design Council.

She chaired the RIBA’s equality, diversity and inclusion advisory group Architects for Change (AfC), was a charity Trustee for the Stephen Lawrence Trust and is honored to have been named a finalist in the Precious Awards 2015.

Founding Director of Archimake, Cheryl is a fully qualified practicing RIBA chartered architect, who specialises in sustainable design and was featured on BBC TV Tricks of the Trade and also Channel 4 with Phil Spencer Secret Agent.

Now focused on a younger audience , she taught Architecture students at degree level for 12 years at London Metropolitan University and also taught Engineering students for 10 years at City University, London.

The team behind Archimake believe exploration in 3D creativity should to be available to children at an early age nurturing skills in creativity, mathematics, problem solving, teamwork, communication skills, and independent thinking.

Annie Bowman Panellist, Women Shaping the Industry Panel

Annie Bowman, is the creator of Hoydens Workwear Ltd, a start up in the very early stages of life. After having been a painter and decorator for 10 years, working long hours in trousers that didn’t fit properly, Annie decided to do something about it. Working in areas dominated by men, women need to be especially careful to look professional and smart so that they stand out for their competency and not their gender.

Annie has developed a pair of trousers that she is confident will fit more women than the competitions’ trousers. They will come in 3 leg lengths and eventually a wide range of sizes.

Their USP is comfort, with a stretch fabric and a waistband that will stop the undignified ‘builder’s bum’ problem. The trousers will be suitable for anyone who works in a physically demanding job. Attachable pockets are available in 2 different sizes for carrying tools or equipment, whether it is a spanner, a wallpaper brush or an Ipad and thermometer.

The website will help raise awareness of women doing physically active jobs, in order to encourage school leavers and career changers to think outside the box.

Solving the skills gap in construction is a long-term approach we all need to take to achieve real change in the industry. Engaging with schools and education doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive, but it does need to be planned and measured because careers advice in schools is a regulated and targeted process It is just as important for smaller employers to make their voices heard to the next generation as it is for the ‘brand names’ who often have good existing school links.

Effective schools engagement follows a very similar process to standard business development. You need to be clear on the offer, research the ‘market’ to identify who has most interest in your offer, and to take the steps to build the relationship.

Here are 12 practical tips to help you step forward and inspire the next generation: 1.Talk to your local Enterprise Coordinators: Enterprise Coordinators are the local representatives of the Careers & Enterprise Company, and they have direct links into all the schools in your LEP region. You can find the details of your nearest Enterprise Coordinator by searching your postcode at careersandenterprise.co.uk/enterprise-adviser-network.

2. Research the school: Schools are not one homogeneous group – they have different structures, objectives and ambitions. You need to pitch yourself to the school that best fits your organisational culture and opportunities. To understand any challenges they’re facing and the ambitions they have for their students, you should visit compare-schoolperformance.service.gov.uk 3. Prep your offer: What makes you different from other businesses who do what you do? What insights and experiences can you offer students? If you don’t already have some great content, this is the time to get creative. As part of the new National Careers Strategy, schools will be required to demonstrate progress against all of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks – which ones can you help them with? Find out more at gatsby.org.uk 4. Where are you on social media? Like any prospect, when you put the phone down from a call with a teacher, they will go online to find out more about you. Is your voice being heard? Does it reinforce the values you just told them about? Who is their point of contact in your organisation? Can they see examples of previous schools engagement you’ve delivered? Make sure someone in your company coordinates your online messages 5.What do you want to achieve from your schools engagement? How much time and resource are you prepared to commit to it? Of course, you might have commercial ambitions that rely on being able to evidence good CSR, but putting clear objectives and resources to your schools engagement gives your whole team a tangible target. Built Environment Skills in Schools

6. Is your offer a succinct and fact-based statement? It should be 7. Are your people ready to go, or do you need to spend some time on training? This isn’t the time to wing it – mismatched, uninspiring, complicated presentations waste everyone’s time. Children are a very discerning audience – they are used to people presenting information to them, all day, every day. If you haven’t taken the time to prepare, the children won’t engage and you won’t be invited back. Make sure your key people are trained on presenting to young audiences, and that your materials are all consistent and branded 8. Which children in the school are you aiming your message at? Gifted and talented? Risk of NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)? Smashing those preconceptions of construction with the girls? One message does not fit all audiences. Identifying your niche is always a more effective way to create engagement and legacy 9. Give your message structure Some key questions to ask yourself as you develop your message include: What’s your pitch; what’s your supporting evidence; where do you fit into the overall construction story; what sound-bites of information do you want students to take away; what’s the next step for pupils who are interested in talking to you; where can students and teachers get hold of more information?

10. Be clear on the post-16 options: What do children need to study to do what you do?

Where can they find those courses? How long do they take? How much do they cost?

Post-16 options are developing at a phenomenal pace, and pupils can chose subjectbased courses (for example, A-levels or Baccalaureate), vocational courses (i.e. BTEC), and in-work training (such as apprenticeships or traineeships). As part of the National Careers Strategy, there is an immediate requirement for every school to ensure that they provide an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access all pupils in years 8 - 13 for the purpose of informing them about approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships 11. How best to present your message: Don’t get too prescriptive about delivering your message as an assembly talk. Think about other formats that could work including careers talks, CV workshops, mock interviews, careers fairs, workplace visits, work experience, activity-based workshops, competitions, and support for teachers with careers guidance 12. Expect the unexpected: Some of the questions you might be asked by students include “How much do you earn?”, “What hours do you work?”, “Do you enjoy your job?”, “What job would you choose if you didn’t do this one?”, or “What are some of the things you don’t like about your job?” Don’t expect to fob them off with vague answers – know what each of your team is going to say in reply, making sure it’s honest and your team are comfortable saying it

Women into Construction NAWIC Collaborator

Women Into Construction (WIC) is an independent not-for-profit organization that promotes gender equality in construction.

We provide bespoke support to women interested in working in the construction industry through advice and guidance, training, work-placements and brokerage into jobs, as well as assisting contractors to recruit highly motivated, trained women, helping to reduce skills gaps and create a more gender-equal work force.

WIC focuses on both large and small projects, and have worked on the Olympic Build, Crossrail, Tideway, HS2, as well as housing and commercial projects. Originally London based, WIC have recently expanded their delivery to Birmingham and the West Midlands, and are building a model that can be delivered nationally.

WIC works with women looking for opportunities in all areas of construction, from graduates such as engineers, construction managers and quantity surveyors, through the trades; to women interested in admin and technical support positions.

Built By Us is on a mission to diversify the construction industry. Through our unique mentoring and talent development programmes, we are giving industry professionals from all backgrounds the skills they need to progress in their careers.

We are dedicated to building a construction industry that truly reflects the society it is helping to create. As the world around us becomes increasingly more diverse, we must take tangible steps to develop and support a far more diverse workforce.

With 20% of workers set to retire within the next 10 years and only 3% of young people considering a job in construction , the industry can’t afford to ignore the wealth of diverse talent at its fingertips.

Creating role models and inspiring change In many ways, the numbers speak for themselves. On average, only 4% of construction industry workers are from black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) background and 0.2% of employees identify as having a disability. Men working in the industry outnumber women by a ratio of approximately five to one .

But at Built By Us we recognise that our workforce is more than just a set of figures to be improved. Our industry is made up of fantastic people who are building our future – and we are here to tell their stories. Through connecting, supporting and championing the talented individuals who make up our industry, we are dedicated to demonstrating the importance and value of a diverse workforce.

Our programmes We run three programmes to support industry professionals at every stage of their career, with a focus on connecting and developing diverse talent. Our unique approach means that we can offer advice and support for a wide range of talented people looking to begin or grow a career in the industry.

It provides support and information for those preparing to gain work experience, training, an apprenticeship or new role in the industry. We work with schools, colleges, individuals and employers to provide bespoke support.

This programme is also suitable for those who are unemployed, underemployed, or people who have taken a career break for 3 months. The Build programme provides support from someone with experience in the sector to help their mentee better understand the opportunities available in construction, property and the built environment.

We’ve also developed the FLUID Diversity Mentoring Programme – an innovative scheme designed to address the retention and development of talented industry professionals from diverse backgrounds for management and leadership roles in the built environment. We link volunteer mentors and mentees from across the construction industry to work on a one to one mentoring partnership to enable the support and development of the mentee. Construction professionals at a variety of career stages are encouraged to take part.

Our third programme, Shape, has been created to support industry entrepreneurs looking to grow or launch their own business. We help a diverse range of business start-ups in built environment sectors, providing tailored one-to-one developmental mentoring. This is run over a 12-month cycle and connects mentees with volunteer mentors, drawn from a variety of backgrounds, experience and expertise and matched with those wishing to found businesses and or businesses owners.

Getting involved We are connecting diverse talent to construction businesses, supporting individuals in developing their career and helping companies on their journey to becoming more inclusive workplaces.

Women in Construction – the critical solution to a skills shortage The drive to encourage and retain women in construction roles is a critical solution to the skills shortage and a topic of enormous importance to the industry at large.

One only has to consider the 300,000 new homes that are to be built each year, and the need for more than a million extra workers by 2020, to realise the enormity of the challenges ahead. Figures suggest that women are expected to make up more than a quarter of that workforce by 2020, but more can and should be done, with some experts believing the figure will be more like half of the workforce.

Looking back to 1988, less than 7% of the full-time construction industry workforce in Britain were women. By 1995, the Equal Opportunities Commission stated in its annual publication that women continue to be significantly under-represented particularly in the construction sector.

The situation is improving with wages rising, albeit slowly, and the proportion of women in senior roles has almost trebled since 2005, providing some hope that the misconceptions around construction being a gender-specific industry are at last being removed. But, a survey by Randstad in 2018 discovered that out of 1,200 people that have experienced gender discrimination (33%), 60% were women, and more than eight in ten women feel left out and excluded from male-oriented conversations and social events. Not only are these figures disturbing, but the survey revealed 43% of organisations do not actively monitor pay equality.

Encouragingly, there are parts of the industry that have recognised the urgent need to address these inequalities, and we at London Build 2018 are a part of that drive. We’ve been hosting our Women in Construction Networking Event for two years now, and are thrilled that through the growing support from industry, we are able to offer inspiring leaders the platform to encourage and inspire the younger generation and more women to challenge the barriers to entry and aspire to a more diverse workforce.

At last year’s event, we worked with NAWIC, Built by Both, Women in Property, the Federation of Master Builders and many more key industry figures, registering 1,150 female visitors to the session. We aim to make this year’s event to be even bigger and remain the UK’s largest gathering of women working in construction!
