Welcome to the Na�onal Associa�on of Women in Construc�on’s annual na�onal conference that is en�tled “Enough talk, let’s Walk!”. This year it is being hosted by the London region at the iconic headquarters of the Royal Ins�tu�on of Chartered Surveyors.

You will have seen that there is a jam-packed schedule for this a�ernoon, and we would encourage anyone that is not already a member of NAWIC to join up as soon as possible. If you have any ques�ons about this please do not hesitate to ask us, and please also follow us on social media. We are delighted that so many of you are here and wish to extend our thanks to all our members and volunteers who make everything we do possible.

We have enjoyed another busy year and have been engaging in overarching na�onal campaigns as well as the hec�c regional events calendar. One of the campaigns concerns our insistence that construc�on contracts and other documenta�on many of us use on a daily basis adopt gender neutral language.

Our firm belief is that the project documents we use need to reflect those using them and be inclusive. Care should be taken over both the form and substance of these important documents that frame the construc�on work being done and the rela�onships between the par�es that sign up to them. We will be hearing more on this today, and I hope to have your visible support both here and on Twi�er and LinkedIn. Another campaign has been prompted by my involvement in analysing the results of sector wide surveys on the treatment of women and their career development. This con�nues to reveal occurrences of discrimina�on, unequal pay and sexual harassment. What we are looking to do, in partnership with the construc�on press, is an in-depth study of the state of the construc�on industry and specifically what construc�on companies are doing well and what needs to improve. We hope to be able to iden�fy tangible goals so that we can tackle this head on and see improvements by this �me next year.

In terms of regional ac�vity, two regions I would like to focus on are the Midlands and London.

The Midlands organised a re-launch earlier this year and have a fantas�c mix of long term commi�ee members and new recruits. We hope that they can develop into a substan�al group given the high value and complex construc�on projects being undertaken in that region and the poten�al numbers of members we will need to serve. In connec�on with this, I have been invited to work with a group called the Women’s Alliance in the Midlands which is going to draw together numerous ac�ve women’s groups, share resources and plan together an event for Interna�onal Women’s Day 2020. As ever, the trail-blazing London region have shown an appe�te for varied and numerous events which are thought provoking, important, innova�ve and fun. A par�cularly interes�ng event being the recent collabora�on with the Worshipful Company of Constructors that sought to inspire women to take leadership roles in the construc�on industry.

As we reported last year, we are undertaking a full-scale update of our website and our mo�va�on is to ensure it serves the needs of our members and us as an organisa�on. We are also looking for volunteers to assist the running of the regional NAWIC groups, in par�cular in the Midlands, the South West and Northern Ireland, so if you can help us there please get in touch as soon as you can.

Regardless of your poli�cal persuasion I think it would be safe to say most of us have been concerned by the divisive poli�cal climate in the UK that has been ignited by the decision to leave the European Union. Unfortunately, that division seems to be set to remain for many months but what I wish to convey is that NAWIC does not endorse division and we welcome all our members as equals. As far as we see it, that will never change.

On that note I will leave you with a fi�ng quota�on from Alaa Murabit, an interna�onal advocate for inclusive peace processes and author of an essay called “Imposter Syndrome” in which she said, “if we had more women in the room we could solve a lot more problems.”

My take on that is, if NAWIC succeeds, the room, much like today, will be full of women.

Regional update London and South East

Since the 2018 conference, as well as organising a range of networking, training and personal development events, our regional commi�ee and collaborator Morley von Sternberg have become finalists at the LCA 2019 Awards, have submi�ed evidence to two parliamentary groups and helped the Dept. Of Public Appointments find candidates.

The commi�ee of 21 volunteers and further 30 school ambassadors have delivered mul�ple events and ini�a�ves focused on the needs and demands of our regional network which now makes up circa 85% of the NAWIC UK members.

In 2019 and thanks to a change in the landscape we have been able to successfully deliver a substan�al amount of events focused on sustainability and the environment. We have also been able to explore topics such as the impact of the built environment on our well being and how career defining a growth mindset can become. And of course, we have visited noteworthy examples such as Bloomberg, Ba�ersea Power Sta�on, Republic and Islington Square.

Our team has also collaborated with other organisa�ons by partnering on events, suppor�ng their projects or sharing best prac�ce and opportuni�es. Among those, we can find RICS, Dept. Of Public Appointments, APPG4EBE Commission, BBC, FT Summits, WIC, BBU, CYT, Girl Guiding, RIBA-AFC, WIA, Mipim Ladies, Building People, Worshipful Company of Contractors, London Build 2019, WICE Awards, WIC Summit.

Whilst other industries have tried to explain how they impact on people’s lives, our industry has, for too long, been focused on delivering and not-so-much on explaining or showing.

As such, the general public is hardly aware of how the built environment affects their everyday lives and why it is important to take part in the shaping of it.

Further to this, the industry has a reputa�on for being harsh, dirty and poorly paid and the many roles available are completely unknown to those looking form the outside and even those within. As such, parents are not keen to send their children to such a context.

Looking at the wider picture, research shows that an important factor for girls and women not to be looking into construc�on as a valid career source was a widely spread lack of awareness of the roles and opportuni�es available.

The Project: As part of our commitment to redefining the image of our industry, we joined forces with Architectural Photographer Morley Von Sternberg to develop a tool we could use to highligh�ng the contribu�on of women to the Built Environment through their roles in construc�on. We want to show those women in their context but also to give them a voice to share their passion and journey to ignite curiosity.

The format of the project: The ini�al inten�on was to create a book, a collec�on of portraits which could be gi�ed to schools for their careers department to use as a tool, however, we soon realised that this would limit us geographically and would not allow parents to be part of the process. This is why we are

working on a website which will showcase the portraits and stories and which will be available free of charge.

The portraits: The portraits range from individual to mul�disciplinary teams. We want the group photographs to be an acknowledgment of the teamwork that goes behind every project, because we understand this could be vital to engage women and millennials.

We want to showcase different levels of experience, context, roles, sizes of prac�ce/company among other things. NAWIC North East has had a fantas�c year of events, which has recently seen our fabulous Annual Charity Ball raise £5,315.00 for the Lighthouse Club Construc�on Industry Charity. The evening’s theme was Masqurade and Fabulous, and we welcomed over 180 guests from the construc�on industry to the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle for a fabulous night of networking, fun and raising money for a fantas�c cause. A huge thank you goes to our sponsors of the evening Randstad, Cundall and P+HS Architects, and to everyone who donated prizes for the charity raffle.

“I had the best night ever. It was a eureka moment for me. Having been in the industry since I was 16…therefore 32 years, I realised that my normal of what the industry was is star�ng to change. It was the first �me I have been in a room like that where it was not filled with testosterone. It was balanced. I went home feeling relaxed and like I had made genuine friends. Incredible!” - Susan Dawson feedback from the NAWIC Annual Charity Ball 2019.

We have run eight events engaging with fourteen different schools and colleges in the North East, where we showed students the range of different careers available in the construc�on industry, including our brilliant new ‘Design and Build’ challenge. We are now receiving requests directly from the schools for us to run ac�vi�es with their students around encouraging them into STEM subjects and the construc�on industry.

We have launched our Mentoring Scheme, where we are working alongside Northumbria University to provide mentors to students to encourage them to take up careers in the

industry. Our first group of mentors were trained in June, and we are looking to train our second group in early 2020. A huge thank you to the Northern Coun�es Builders Federa�on for their financial support of our scheme. The official launch event took place on the 16th October, and our first group of mentors and mentees were ‘matched’ at the second event on the 23rd October. Keep a look out for our ‘Mentor of the week’ profiles on our social media pages – NAWIC North East on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We have held a number of CPD events, including ‘Emo�onal Resilience, Confidence and Asser�veness Training’ provided by Simon Raybould in June, and our ‘Things I wish I’d Known’ Event in September where we welcomed four fantas�c speakers – Penny Marshall, Nik Turner, John Neilson and Angela Carney – who provided insights into their careers so far and things they wish they’d known.

We held a number of social events including a tour of The Grey’s Monument in Newcastle, and we have had a successful year of our First Thursday Informal Networking Event – providing an informal space to catch-up and network with like-minded people – this is held the first Thursday of every month at YOLO Townhouse in Newcastle.

Next year we have a number of events lined up already, including more CPD’s suppor�ng and inspiring people in the construc�on industry, we hope to do a tour of the roof of St James’s Park, our mentoring scheme will be in full swing and we have a number of school events lined up.

The past year has seen a lot of change for the NAWIC North-West commi�ee, most notably with Lore�a stepping into a na�onal deputy chair role. However, we are incredibly excited to announce that Barbra Carlisle, the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Lead at Arcadis, is joining the team as our new regional chair, armed with a wealth of new ideas, energy and networks. We are thrilled to have her on board and all very much look forward to the next twelve months.

Alongside Barbra, our commi�ee members include Alex Radu, Laura Padge�, Lore�a Lipworth and Sahar Handforth, as well as two new members, Freya Woodward and Gabriela Balas.

Since the last conference which we were delighted to host in Manchester, and despite changes which led to a quieter year, we have been able to offer our members some great events, ranging from our Members Social series to our site tour of the beau�ful Octagon Theatre on Interna�onal Women’s Day, as well as (nearly) making it onto the 6 o’clock news for our collabora�on with Legoland to promote construc�on as a career choice for local young children. Lore�a spoke at the Women in Construc�on Europe 2018 conference in Amsterdam and many commi�ee members a�ended schools events and STEM fairs to speak about exci�ng prospects for young people in construc�on careers.

North-West events in the pipeline include our Autumn Social, a Legal Update event hosted by our very own solicitor Sahar, as well as more site tours and networking opportuni�es. We are also exploring ways to collaborate with like-minded forums to con�nue to promote women in construc�on, as well as re-launching our North-West Bulle�n very soon, so watch this space.

Furthermore, in our next commi�ee mee�ng we will be se�ng a strategy on how to con�nue adding value to our members over the next twelve months and beyond, and reviewing two key themes including: 1) Enabling members to gain personal value from NAWIC – in the form of developing networks and a suppor�ve environment, shared learning and training, feeling connected to something important and relevant, and networking with those who can inspire and be inspired by you; and 2) Enabling women to give back to their communi�es - in the form of engaging with schools, opportuni�es to share specialist knowledge, connec�ng with industry events and influencing local industry leaders.

All in all, it has been a good year for the North-West commi�ee and we head into Year 4 with great enthusiasm!

1. Affordable training at family and work friendly �mes : As well as the pay gap, we have found that the documented household gap could be behind women’s reluctance to priori�se on their own development. In addi�on to this, (always excluding excep�ons) they are also less likely to ask for �me o ff work to a�end development seminars.

Our response: We provide affordable training, at family and work friendly �mes, for our network as well as incen�ves.

2. Knowledge Sharing: Our industry has a leaky pipeline in the UK. 45% of the trades being over 45 and without enough new arrivals, there is real danger is losing their knowledge and experience and to make ma�ers worse, people o�en working in silos developing similar solu�ons rather than coming together to combine their exper�se Our response: We have found that across all industries, remaining connected to a purpose is a draw for women and millennials, and these groups are much more open much more open to share knowledge and help each other if this can have a posi�ve impact for everyone.

3. Formalised networking opportuni�es The challenge: Access to Social Capital is a proven drawback for the progression of women and ethnic minori�es yet studies show at managerial level, visibility counts for 90% of success.

Our response: We have made formalised networking opportuni�es part of our calendar and provided a framework from which those forming part of it, student members included, can build their own go to support network who will provide them support (and business opportuni�es) at every stage of their career.

Challenging the JCT language

Catrin Rees, Senior Associate Collyer Bristow The JCT standard form of building contract is familiar to most working in the construc�on industry. It’s the predominant standard form of building contract used for UK construc�on projects.

The contract and its terms form the backbone of any project, se�ng out the rights, en�tlements and obliga�ons of the par�es. The JCT also incorporates reference to various roles, such as Architect, Contract Administrator and Quan�ty Surveyor.

Did you know (or had you no�ced) that the JCT is also wri�en in the male gender, with a general catch all sta�ng that this includes both genders?

Encouraging JCT to walk its own talk on industry gender diversity and equality, NAWIC have been in dialogue with the JCT Commi�ee to publish a gender neutral edi�on in the next published edi�on.

Catrin Rees, sits on the NAWIC Na�onal Commi�ee representa�ve for publicity, but is a construc�on lawyer as her day job, has been spearheading the campaign and will provide us with a brief background and update on the campaign’s progress.

Louise Hardy, BSC CENG FICE C MGR CCMI FWES HON FAPM Crest Nicholson Louise is a chartered civil engineer and provides engineering and project delivery guidance as FTSE250 board member for companies opera�ng within the built environment sector; specifically in mining, manufacturing and house building.

Louise is also a StemNet ambassador, mentor and diversity champion.

In her execu�ve career, she rose to director level leading the delivery of na�onally significant infrastructure projects; most notably the London2012 Olympics, High Speed 1 railway and Jubilee Line Extension.

Louise is the Chair of the Ins�tu�on of Civil Engineers fellowship panel and was listed in the Top 50 Women of Influence in Engineering in 2016.

Louise juggles her non execu�ve por�olio and voluntary work with bringing up twin daughters.

Jess Baker, MSc CPsychol AFBPsS Jess Baker Consul�ng Jess Baker (MSc CPsychol AFBPsS) is a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the Bri�sh Psychological Society, and Women’s Leadership Coach.

She works in leadership and wellbeing with organisa�ons and individuals. She has par�cular interests in helping people to overcome self-doubt and build confidence.

Jess has extensive experience as a business consultant and senior HR manager, delivering leadership development and global cultural change programmes.

She love talking about her old friends, the Inner Cri�c, the Imposter Syndrome, and selfsabotaging behaviours. She writes for HR and health magazines, and is regularly interviewed on BBC Radio.

In her spare �me she runs a free 5-day challenge, Tame Your Inner Cri�c, and is also a Trustee of BelEve UK, a charity that delivers leadership programmes for girls in schools and communi�es.

Delva Patman FRICS ACIArb Delva Patman Associates Delva founded the prac�ce in 1980. Prior to this Delva was in private prac�ce including 10 years with a leading firm of City based architects during which she set up and managed offices in Paris and the Middle East. Delva is an expert on rights of light, party wall and third party ma�ers and has advised on a diverse range of notable commercial, public and town centre projects throughout the UK. Delva is past Chairman of the College of Estate Management and has been a Vice President of the Royal Ins�tu�on of Chartered Surveyors.

In 1999, she was the first female Master of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors, one of the City Livery Companies. Delva is a frequently invited speaker on rights of light & daylight/sunlight ma�ers and has given papers for the Blundell Lectures, the Bri�sh Council of Offices, the Property Li�ga�on Associa�on, the CPD Founda�on and the Joint Oxford Study Conference.

Harriet Waley-Cohen Harriet Waley-Cohen Hunted down to speak for audiences including Microso�, Barclays and Invesco, Harriet has empowered thousands over the last 15 years to believe in themselves and their poten�al.

She has been through mul�ple transforma�ons and knows what it takes to make deep rooted changes that s�ck, and to emerge from tough �mes stronger and wiser. Harriet is 17 years in recovery from addic�ons, le� an unhappy marriage and went on to thrive, shi�ed from a 10-year banking career into motherhood and entrepreneurship, lives with a permanent pain condi�on a�er being driven into, and survived breast cancer.

Stephanie Aitken Stephanie Aitken Coaching Stephanie is an experienced trainer, speaker and coach. She spent 12 years working as a lawyer for companies like MTV and Channel 4, before switching careers in 2011 - preferring to focus on the people side of business.

Stephanie has spent 6 years teaching communica�on and rela�onship skills to some of the biggest law firms and organisa�ons in the world, including Barclays, Network Rail, Dentons and Bird & Bird.

Stephanie is also passionate about ushering in a new paradigm of female leadership - one that shi�s us away from valuing alpha male traits towards more compassionate and collabora�ve leadership. She pursues this through her own consultancy and as a trainer for One of Many (UK’s fastest growing women’s leadership community).

Stephanie is a true woman of the world with a blend of Venezuelan, American, Sco�sh and Irish heritage; and is fortunate to have lived in Brazil, Geneva and London.

Danna Walker Built By Us Danna Walker is the founder and director of Built By Us, an awardwinning social enterprise which exists to ac�vely champion greater diversity and inclusion in the construc�on sector. Her career spans over 20 years in construc�on and built environment, encompassing various roles including electrician and Architect, and within the field of voca�onal educa�on. She is currently a board member of Public Prac�ce and former charity Trustee and elected Board member for the Architects Registra�on Board.

Danna was proud to be nominated for the Precious Awards 2015, which celebrates the achievements of women of colour. In 2018 she presented BBC Radio 4 documentary The Architecture of Incarcera�on which explored the philosophy and ethos of modern prison design. Most recently Built By Us won the pres�gious Na�onal Mentoring Awards 2019, Na�onal Diversity Programme of the Year for the innova�ve FLUID Diversity Mentoring Programme.

Mar�n was Chair of the Build UK Health Group and chaired the Public Health Responsibility Deal (PHRD) Construc�on Group. Mar�n sits on The CONIAC Health Group and the CITB Health & Safety Commi�ee. Rebecca has twenty years experience in crea�ng, connec�ng and enabling organisa�ons, networks and partnerships in the construc�on industry. Prior to Building People, Rebecca founded a niche consultancy (Circle Three Consul�ng) that worked with industry organisa�ons to deliver employment and skills/social inclusion/local community engagement support. Our mission is to posi�vely impact inclusion and diversity in the built environment.

Our work focuses on breaking down barriers to opportuni�es for industry students, graduates and founders who are underrepresented in the sector.

We do this by crea�ng the link between individuals and organisa�ons to proac�vely address inclusion through talent strategy, advocacy, learning and mentoring.

We are dedicated to building a construc�on industry that truly reflects the society it serves.

As the world around us becomes increasingly more diverse, we must take tangible steps to develop and support a far more diverse workforce.

With 20% of workers set to re�re within the next 10 years(1) and only 3% of young people considering a job in construc�on (2) , the industry can’t afford to ignore the wealth of diverse talent at its finger�ps.

Crea�ng role models and inspiring change In many ways, the numbers speak for themselves. On average, only 4% of construc�on industry workers are from black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) background and 0.2% of employees iden�fy as having a disability. Men working in the industry outnumber women by a ra�o of approximately five to one (3) .

But at Built By Us, we recognise that our workforce is more than just a set of figures to be improved. Our industry is made up of fantas�c people who are building our future – and we are here to tell their stories. Through connec�ng, suppor�ng and championing the talented individuals who make up our industry, we are dedicated to demonstra�ng the importance and value of a diverse workforce.

Inspire the Next Genera�on

Solving the skills gap in construc�on is a long-term approach we all need to take to achieve real change in the industry. Engaging with schools and educa�on doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive, but it does need to be planned and measured because careers advice in schools is a regulated and targeted process It is just as important for smaller employers to make their voices heard to the next genera�on as it is for the ‘brand names’ who o�en have good exis�ng school links.

Effec�ve schools engagement follows a very similar process to standard business development.

You need to be clear on the offer, research the ‘market’ to iden�fy who has most interest in your offer, and to take the steps to build the rela�onship.

Here are 12 prac�cal �ps to help you step forward and inspire the next genera�on: 1.Talk to your local Enterprise Coordinators: Enterprise Coordinators are the local representa�ves of the Careers & Enterprise Company, and they have direct links into all the schools in your LEP region. You can find the details of your nearest Enterprise Coordinator by searching your postcode at careersandenterprise.co.uk/enterprise-adviser-network.

2. Research the school: Schools are not one homogeneous group – they have different structures, objec�ves and ambi�ons. You need to pitch yourself to the school that best fits your organisa�onal culture and opportuni�es. To understand any challenges they’re facing and the ambi�ons they have for their students, you should visit compare-school-performance. service.gov.uk 3. Prep your offer: What makes you different from other businesses who do what you do?

What insights and experiences can you offer students? If you don’t already have some great content, this is the �me to get crea�ve. As part of the new Na�onal Careers Strategy, schools will be required to demonstrate progress against all of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks – which ones can you help them with? Find out more at gatsby.org.uk 4. Where are you on social media? Like any prospect, when you put the phone down from a call with a teacher, they will go online to find out more about you. Is your voice being heard?

Does it reinforce the values you just told them about? Who is their point of contact in your organisa�on? Can they see examples of previous schools engagement you’ve delivered? Make sure someone in your company coordinates your online messages 5.What do you want to achieve from your schools engagement? How much �me and resource are you prepared to commit to it? Of course, you might have commercial ambi�ons that rely on being able to evidence good CSR, but pu�ng clear objec�ves and resources to your schools engagement gives your whole team a tangible target. Is your offer a succinct and fact-based statement? It should be

7. Are your people ready to go, or do you need to spend some �me on training? This isn’t the �me to wing it – mismatched, uninspiring, complicated presenta�ons waste everyone’s �me.

Children are a very discerning audience – they are used to people presen�ng informa�on to them, all day, every day. If you haven’t taken the �me to prepare, the children won’t engage and you won’t be invited back. Make sure your key people are trained on presen�ng to young audiences, and that your materials are all consistent and branded 8. Which children in the school are you aiming your message at? Gi�ed and talented? Risk of NEET (Not in Educa�on, Employment or Training)? Smashing those preconcep�ons of construc�on with the girls? One message does not fit all audiences. Iden�fying your niche is always a more effec�ve way to create engagement and legacy 9. Give your message structure Some key ques�ons to ask yourself as you develop your message include: What’s your pitch; what’s your suppor�ng evidence; where do you fit into the overall construc�on story; what sound-bites of informa�on do you want students to take away; what’s the next step for pupils who are interested in talking to you; where can students and teachers get hold of more informa�on?

10. Be clear on the post-16 op�ons: What do children need to study to do what you do?

Where can they find those courses? How long do they take? How much do they cost? Post-16 op�ons are developing at a phenomenal pace, and pupils can chose subject-based courses (for example, A-levels or Baccalaureate), voca�onal courses (i.e. BTEC), and in-work training (such as appren�ceships or traineeships). As part of the Na�onal Careers Strategy, there is an immediate requirement for every school to ensure that they provide an opportunity for a range of educa�on and training providers to access all pupils in years 8 - 13 for the purpose of informing them about approved technical educa�on qualifica�ons or appren�ceships 11. How best to present your message: Don’t get too prescrip�ve about delivering your message as an assembly talk. Think about other formats that could work including careers talks, CV workshops, mock interviews, careers fairs, workplace visits, work experience, ac�vitybased workshops, compe��ons, and support for teachers with careers guidance 12. Build your Team

I’d like to begin with a story. Back in the early 1990’s I was an Arts Graduate working as a Business Services Consultant for the London Underground. I was asked to get the Tube depots (where they stored the rolling stock) qualified for the Interna�onal Quality Standard BS5750.

I met the Engineering Director and he said to me; “why did they send us an arts graduate - not an engineer? What do you even know about engineering?” I replied; “what do you need to teach me to help me do this properly?” He began to understand that together we could get the task done – but to do this, he needed to construc�vely collaborate with me. We worked well together on it and he began to enjoy sharing his knowledge and mentored me – effec�vely ‘sending the elevator back down.’

It’s about giving a hand up to other women in business – not a hand out, which is the philosophy behind the Big Issue magazine. An ar�cle in the Harvard Business Review noted that men tend to have more sponsors suppor�ng their rise than do women. Sponsorship and proac�ve support ma�ers and we owe it to ourselves and the women that follow us to do what we can to support each other, whether in our teams and companies, or outside.

Building your team - begin with the end in mind Building a great team is like crea�ng a new building. You need to have a clear visual representa�on of what it will look like when complete – what does success look like? Without this, the team can be incredibly busy, but working towards several different metaphorical ‘buildings.’ You may be surprised to find your team may not have a clear understanding of their own purpose in the team, let alone the wider organisa�on or it may just be vague, or even very different from your own.

So, it’s a good step to refresh your team with its direc�on and purpose. Outline the objec�ves of the organisa�on and how that impacts on the team’s role; detail the team objec�ves and the

specific roles of each individual. Then regularly repeat and update as necessary so that everyone is pulling in the same direc�on.

Genera�onal teams Our workplaces are made up of people with increasingly different ways of working. Someone born in the 1960s will have different expecta�ons, aspira�ons and work habits than someone born in the 1990s. Such blended teams can work together well.

It’s useful to Establish your team-specific ‘ground-rules’ – the unwri�en norms that guide how work gets done in your team. These might include agreeing a forum for how the team can make sugges�ons for improvements; and how communica�on will work amongst team members. Take some �me to think about how you want your team to interact and communicate and then agree with them how that will work. Do it as soon as you can so that your people know what to expect and what your standards are.

Recruit well Be clear about each role in your team and then recruit the people that are not only the best fit technically, but also most closely mirror the values of your group. For example, if teamwork is cri�cal, hire people that flourish in team environments, rather than those that prefer to work independently.

Then develop them Give your team the support that they need as individuals to perform at a high level. This may be training, coaching, mentoring, or simply close management. Knowing your people, their strengths and how they work most effec�vely, are keys to great management.

London Build has been celebra�ng women within the construc�on industry since 2015, hos�ng an annual Women in Construc�on networking a�ended by over 1,200 women working across all sectors – making it the UK’s largest mee�ng of Women in Construc�on.

This free-to-a�end session gives professionals the opportunity to learn from a panel of established experts and rub elbows with some truly inspira�onal women who have made a significant impact on the industry.

The event will look at issues of gender imbalance and inequality within the built environment, as well as highligh�ng the outstanding achievements of those who are driving change across the industry.
