THE White Ensign billows in the stiff Clyde breeze as the imposing black form of HMS Vengeance returns home to Faslane at the end of an intense period of training. The Vanguard-class ballistic missile-carrying submarine has been conducting exercises in Scottish waters under the watchful gaze of teams from the Flag Officer Sea Training – the experts who determine whether a ship and her company are ready for active duty. Vengeance is the youngest of the quartet of ‘bombers’ and recently completed the 300th deterrent patrol carried out by the Silent Service since round-the-clock missions by Polaris, and now Trident, boats began in 1969.
