Defence Secretary gives broad hint over bigger ships

LARGER AIRCRAFT carriers for the Royal Navy may be nearer in the wake of a broad hint by the Defence Secretary George Robertson that a new generation of ships is under consideration to widen the Service's multi-purpose air capability. Speaking as HMS Illustrious relieved HMS Invincible in the Gulf, Mr Robertson said in a Chatham House speech that the class of small aircraft carriers had proved useful in post-Cold War tasks for which they had not been designed. Referring to the Strategic Defence Review, he said: "We are considering whether, if we do acquire new carriers, they should be larger than the current generation in order to operate a wider range of aircraft in a greater number of roles." Emphasising that no final decisions had yet been taken, Mr Robertson said: "The British people know that the Armed Forces have added to their Battle Honours the proud title of the best peacekeepers in the world. And they know instinctively that strong defence is good foreign policy." If the Navy did receive larger carriers to replace its three Invincible-class ships, they would be ordered in a climate in which the Defence budget is most unlikely to be increased.
