Challenges for offshore vessel owners

Offshore supply chain has suffered greatly since the oil prices started to fall from $115 a barrel in mid-2014. As a result of low oil prices, the oil companies started cutting capital expenditures and pulling breaks on exploration for new deposits.

The oil prices have rebounded somewhat.

A report by IEA states that the consumption is expected to grow. So, if the oil prices go back up, the workload for the offshore supply vessels will most definitely increase? Perhaps, but before that, the owners of vessels supplying offshore drilling rigs will stay in a Catch 22-like situation, where low oil prices are bad, but high oil prices do not necessarily mean immediate improvement.

To explain, Farstad Shipping, one of Norway’s largest offshore ship suppliers, which owns 57 offshore support vessels of various types, says all regions it operates in, pretty much the whole globe, are still challenged with the continued declining activity. This means more vessels available, and downward pressure on day rates, forcing the vessel owners to send offshore service vessels into layup when the day rates are below break-even.

The catch So where is the catch? Well, in its quarterly results presentation on May 12, 2016, Farstad shared that the situation will not be enviable for vessel owners even if, and when the oil prices go back

However this is only a theory.

In the meantime, the Dutch shipbuilder, Damen, says it might have a solution to make the laid up platform supply vessels active and profitable again. The shipbuilder’s design teams have come up with ideas to repurpose the laid up PSVs across several industries. For example, Damen offered to convert a laid up PSV into a profitable container feeder or, for naval operations, a logistic support vessel, or even a fish carrier.

Industry news Jan De Nul names ‘Vole au vent’ In the port of Ostend, Her Majesty the Queen of Belgium christened the new offshore installation vessel of the Jan De Nul Group today.

The vessel was given the catchy name Vole au vent. Her Majesty the Queen wished the vessel and her crew a safe journey. The ceremony took place in the Port of Ostend, which is the base camp for Jan de Nul Group’s project team for the Bligh Bank Phase 2 project, better known as the Nobelwind project.

The Vole au vent, which is 140 metres long and has an impressive Liebherr crane on deck, was christened by the Queen of Belgium amid great interest and in the presence of the family and employees of the Jan De Nul Group and their guests, including Parkwind, the client of the Nobelwind project, worldwide partners from the industry,

as well as national and international politicians. After the christening ceremony, Her Majesty the Queen paid a visit to the bridge and crew of the vessel together with the Jan De Nul family, Carl Decaluwé, Governor of West Flanders, Johan Vande Lanotte, Mayor of Ostend, and Bart Tommelein, Secretary of State. After the delegation had left the vessel, the Vole au vent immediately returned to a nearby quay in the port to resume the activities for the Nobelwind project.

World’s Largest OW Jack-Up Vessel Installs World’s Heaviest Monopile at Veja Mate OWF has a diameter of 7.8 metres, was manufactured by EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH in Rostock.

Scylla will now continue the installation of the remaining 66 monopiles at the construction site, located 95 kilometers northwest from the island of Borkum in the German North Sea. Another Seajacks’ vessel - Seajacks Zaratan, will install transition pieces. “This set up of installing monopiles and TPs from separate installation jack ups was very successful on Blackstone’s 288MW Meerwind project and I am sure it will be the same here,” Seajacks CEO Blair Ainslie explained in November 2015.

Gardline Geosurvey and Neptune Join Forces Gardline Geosurvey and Neptune have joined forces to bring a new integrated vessel and ROV package to market.

The strategic partnership between the companies will see Gardline’s DP2 multi-role survey vessel, the MV Kommandor, enhanced with the permanent installation of Neptune’s Explorer 06 100HP ROV. The ROV integration has strengthened the vessel’s full site investigation survey capabilities and allows it to offer enhanced features over standard site survey vessels, particularly with operations which require close approach work and extensive ROV operations.

Kevin Stephen, Neptune’s operations and business development director for Europe, Mediterranean and Africa, said: “We’re delighted to have entered into this partnership with Gardline and it is one that we believe brings a strong integrated package to market.

“As we continue to explore opportunities within Europe and beyond, this new ROV survey and vessel package will be an attractive proposition for clients looking to benefit from an integrated solution and the MV Kommandor and its range of services is very much at the heart of this offering.”

Offshore construction of the Veja Mate offshore wind farm has started with Seajacks Scylla having installed the heaviest monopile produced so far at the project site, according to DGI Doedijns, which provided hydraulic and software equipment for the pile-gripper used at the project.

The Scylla, deemed the world’s largest and most advanced wind farm installation vessel, arrived at the site on Friday,

The US DoE, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote programs and activities that foster the transformation of the energy sector in the Caribbean.

The MoU seeks to increase energy security, reduce energy vulnerability, and promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon technologies in the region.

Specific areas of cooperation within the agreement include clean energy financing, renewable energy, energy education, grid management, fuel diversity and energy efficiency.

Tullow restarts production from Ghana’s Jubilee field Oil exploration and production company Tullow Oil has restarted production from the Jubilee field offshore Ghana following issues with a turret on the field’s FPSO, the Kwame Nkrumah.

At the end of April the oil company said it was expecting for the off-take and production from the field to resume ‘in the next few days’.

However, come May and Tullow has not provided any further updates about the field.

Following several media reports saying that Tullow has restarted production from the field, Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Tullow Oil seeking confirmation and further details on the field’s production.

Tullow’s spokesperson told Offshore Energy Today that offtake began over the weekend and production restarted on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.

According to Citi Business News’ report, Tullow cut production from the field by over 50 pct, from 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day prior shutdown, to 33,000 barels per day after the restart.

To remind, a technical investigation of the Jubilee field FPSO Kwame Nkrumah turret bearing has confirmed that it was no longer able to rotate as originally designed leading to new operating procedures being implemented.

Tullow is the operator of the Jubilee field with 35.48% interest. Tullow’s partners are Kosmos and Anadarko, each with 24.08% interest, and GNPC and Petro SA with 13.64% and 2.73% interest, respectively.

France targets 100 MW of tidal, wave projects by 2023 France has revealed the revised offshore renewable energy targets for 2023 setting the goal for installed marine renewable energy projects at 100 MW by 2023.

The French government’s plan includes the revised goals for offshore wind as well, setting the target of installed capacity at 3000 MW by 2023.

DNV GL: Renewables to Become Safest Investment by 2025 Renewable generation will become the safest investment choice in the power market and dominate power generation new builds in the next ten years, DNV GL predicts in its Technology Outlook 2025.

DNV GL identified ten technology trends in materials, wind, solar, electricity storage, data-communications and power electronics that will unleash a ‘perfect storm,’ creating a new power reality and transforming the existing power systems.

One of the trends is bigger and smarter wind turbines.

The turbines of the future will include light, flexible blades and aerodynamic control devices which, combined with innovations in transmission systems, new sensors and smart control systems, will ensure better utilisation of the available wind and will react to the needs of the electricity grid, DNV GL said.

Another trend, digitalisation, will lead to more, faster and better data, increased computing power and better connectivity of all elements in the power system. This will optimise the design, planning and operations of assets in wind, solar, transmission, distribution and the use of electricity in society.

Costs for maintenance of wind turbines and wind farms will be lower and demand response invitations, where customers can voluntarily reduce demand in peak moments, will be better-tuned to individual and changing consumer wishes.

In order to accommodate the increasing share of renewable energy, electricity will need to be transmitted over everlonger distances. High Voltage Direct Current is the solution of lowest cost in this regard, according to DNV GL. Hybrid grids, which the existing AC grid will evolve toward, is defined as the addition of ever-more HVDC connections within and between AC power systems. In this way, grids are evolving into combinations of AC and highly controllable DC systems.
