A message from the General Manager Welcome to Titanic Hotel Liverpool’s newspaper The Navigator, which has been created to guide our guests around the best of what Titanic Hotel, the city of Liverpool and surrounding areas have to offer.

Liverpool has so much for visitors and for everyone lucky enough to live here, to see and do. We have all of Liverpool’s culture, events and leisure on our doorstep and want to show you the varied and vast offering, so that you can make the most of your stay here.

At this time of the year, there’s a buzz about the city, the football season has kicked off again and we’re all building up to the festive season. River of Light Oct 22 - Nov 7 Liverpool City Centre Back by popular demand, the River of Light is returning to the city this autumn to illuminate Liverpool’s stunning waterfront with a 17-night free trail. The Liver Bird Safari Walking Tour Until Dec 20 From School Lane The whole world knows Liverpool’s famous Live Bird on top of the Liver Building, but there are actually over 100 Liver Birds in the city. Santa Dash Dec 5 Pier Head The biggest Santa run in the UK is returning to Liverpool to fill the streets with festive cheer for this Christmas spectacle. Keep eyes peeled as hundreds of Santas will make their way through the city on their 5km waterfront route, helping to raise money for good causes.

Glyndebourne Dec 1-3 Liverpool Empire Theatre, Lime Street As one of just four locations outside of Lewes, the Glyndebourne tour is returning to Liverpool. Across three nights, Glyndebourne are taking to the stage to perform three different operas, including Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Handel's Messiah and Donizetti's Don Pasquale.

TWAREHOUSE, STANLEY DOCK. 1ST OCTOBER - 1ST NOVEMBER TWAREhouse is a new transdisciplinary event happening in the tobacco warehouse opposite Titanic Hotel Liverpool in the North Docks, taking place for one month from 1st October.

The TW Collective is an artists’ residency taking place in line with the redevelopment of the Tobacco Warehouse phase. The residency will be marked by a free exhibition in the Autumn, which will show works from local artists inspired by the building, its impressive heritage, iconic surroundings and stories, with the goal to build a cultural foundation in the North Docks area with Tobacco Warehouse at its centre.

This is a ground-breaking collaboration between developers, Harcourt, and Liverpool John Moores University students, representing the potential of commercial development to support the development of art and culture.

At the heart of this pilot residency programme is the drive to develop creative and cultural events within the community, and to develop artwork that responds to the themes suggested in the building.

This is a unique opportunity to spend time in a building of considerable significance to the City’s history before it is redeveloped. The Tobacco Warehouse is at the heart of the North Docks, and the Atlantic Corridor development zone.

The artists are all associated with Liverpool John Moores University Fine Art department Masters programme. Their practices range from photography, sculpture and print to paint, installation and video works. There will be opportunities for the artists to develop collaborative partnerships and works, and for work to be seen by the residents and visitors as they set up their homes in the building.

Locations don’t come much more packed with history than this one: inside the old Handyman Supermarket which was an old picturehouse and then a hardware store on Smithdown Road for decades. The pub opened in 2017 with two bars and a mezzanine brewery, still keeping and restoring the old frontage, internal walls and flooring, and even the old projection room. It makes its own beers on-site and also collaborates with other breweries, plus it stages events like album launches and makers markets.

In keeping with its brewing history, Black Lodge is slap bang in the Baltic Triangle on Kings Dock Street where they have their microbrewery and tap room.

Set up in 2015, Black Lodge is run by a team who are passionate about small-batch brewing, experimenting and collaborating to create a great range of beers. The taproom’s got plenty of outdoor bench seating for walk-ins, and they do two beer tasting options too – one with and one without food from Fatback Burgers.

Still in the Baltic, this time on Bridgewater Street, Love Lane Brewery is set up in an old rubber factory with a huge kit that can brew up to 3.2million pints. You can help them get through just a few by grabbing and indoor or outdoor table in the taproom and ordering a Love Lane pale ale, IPA or Baltic Berliner, or look out for special collabs like the Love Lane x Twisted Wheel Sgt Peppermint Mint Choc Chip Imperial Stout.

Dead Crafty Beer Company is what happens when Scousers go to Texas and drink craft beer – then decide they really need to bring everything that’s good about it back to Liverpool. On Dale Street for five years, it’s become a go-to for hop lovers with an ever-changing range of beers from all over the world. Rotating taps mean you’ll never have to drink the same beer twice, unless you really love one – Necto Cooler or a Mucho Mucho Raspberry maybe?

Now based in an industrial unit a few minutes from the Liver Building, Carnival Brewing Company is a micro brewery and tasting room which began life in the Liverpool kitchen and garage of a couple of mates four years ago. One successful crowdfunder and a lot of fabulous beers later, Carnival Brewing is now a much-loved player in the city’s brewing community, delivering a delicious range of beer, great tunes and special events, plus The Brewery can shop for weekday pick-ups.

If you’re going to start your own brewery then there’s one place that’s perfect to get it going: in a pub! In 2018, a pub chat led to Liverpool Brewing Company taking on defunct cask beer business Liverpool Organic to grow their own craft brewing brand.

LBC produces stand-out beers across every different style, from fruited sour to weirdly-flavoured stout, so there’s something in there for everyone. Look out for regular taproom events at its brewery HQ near Bank Hall station.

MEET THE TEAM What excites you most about your new role at Titanic Hotel?

Being given the chance to work in such a fantastic hotel and a building as beautiful as the Titanic Hotel Liverpool was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up.

After speaking with Brian and Scott about the hotel and it’s future before joining I was extremely excited by the prospect of getting back into the industry, and with all of the exciting projects going on in the area over the coming years, (The Tobacco Warehouse, Everton’s new stadium etc.) I felt it was a perfect time to join the team.

What's your favourite bar in Liverpool?

I’m a local lad, I grew up here and so I’ve had many favourites over the years but you’ll normally find me around Seel Street these days. More recently I actually had an amazing night out at a cocktail bar called ‘The Oracle’ on Duke Street, a speakeasy/Prohibiton style lounge bar with signature cocktails and world class magicians who join your table to perform unbelievable card tricks, sleight of hand and mind tricks whilst you enjoy your drinks.

What's your favourite cocktail on the Rum Bar menu?

for cocktails so I’m looking forward to mixing things up a bit with the menu and adding a few new features as well...including Bartender Specials, cocktails designed and created by our very own bar team.

What's your one piece of advice for anyone wanting to work in hospitality?

As long as you have the drive and passion for the job, there’s nowhere you cannot go within this industry. I started off as a glass collector in the local social club when I was 13 and have worked in the industry the majority of my life, always wanting to learn more and progress further, working my way up over the years in various jobs until I’ve gotten where I am now at the age of 30, Bars Manager at the best hotel in the city! I could never have got this far if I didn’t love the work I do.

Describe your perfect weekend in the city Going to the Everton game with my dad, brother and uncles and have a few drinks afterwards (hopefully after a win!). Then head into town for food and drink, followed by a gig or some live music at one of the many venues here in the city. It’s been way too long since we’ve been able to enjoy a proper night out in Liverpool, it’s great to see people getting out and things starting to return to normal again.

I’d have to go with one of the classics, a Caipirinha!

Just cachaça, lime juice and sugar…simple but a quality cocktail for those who enjoy a sour drink with a kick.

What's your favourite dish on the menu at Stanley's Bar & Grill?

What excites you most about your new role at Titanic Hotel?

My favourite dish from the menu has to be an 8oz Fillet Steak with a side of three pepper and brandy sauce. It’s just delicious and grilled to perfection.

I am excited and proud to lead such an amazing team we have in Stanley’s Bar & Grill and to be able to put my stamp on the great service we are providing in the restaurant. But even more than that I am very excited to be a part of the wonderful team in the Titanic Hotel.

What's your favourite restaurant in Liverpool?

I could not pick any other restaurant to dine in apart of Stanley’s Bar & Grill, it has a great atmosphere and service, delicious food and unique style all together. This is what I am always looking for in my dining out days.

What's your one piece of advice for anyone wanting to work in hospitality?

Anyone who wants to start in hospitality I would say embrace the journey as it is unique experience and way of life rather than just work.

Describe your perfect weekend in the city My perfect weekend in Liverpool would be to stay in the best hotel you can pick and again I don’t think there is other hotel like Titanic. And to go out and discover for myself what Liverpool has to offer. Meet new people and get the proper feel of this vibrant city.

Museum of Liverpool – one of Jodie Comer’s Killing Eve costumes You’ll have to be patient for this one because it doesn’t open until November, but it’ll definitely be worth the wait, especially if you’re a fan of BBC’s Killing Eve. Museum of Liverpool reopens Wondrous Place in November, which is a gallery dedicated to Liverpool’s most influential creatives. Wondrous Place explores the city’s staggering roll call of entertainers, writers, poets, performers, musicians, visual artists, comedians and sports people and in amongst the 135 new pieces on display, there’s one absolute stunner. Don’t miss an iconic Villanelle costume from Killing Eve, as worn

by Liverpool actress Jodie Comer as the fashion-loving assassin.

World Museum – Aibo, the AI dog Meet man’s best friend as you’ve probably never seen him before at World Museum’s AI: More than Human exhibition. Aibo isn’t just any pet, he’s a robo-pet, maybe not so cuddly but super-clever and you don’t have to house train him. Aibo the singing dancing AI dog is one of the stars of AI: More Than Human which gives visitors a glimpse into the future and the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence. Lucian Freud – a stylish early self-portrait

Maritime Museum – a look at life at sea

Walker Art Gallery – LS Lowry’s iconic image of Salford The Walker is well known for its European Renaissance paintings and masterpieces by artists like Rubens and Rembrandt, Pre-Raphaelite artworks by Rossetti and Impressionist works by Monet and Degas, but it also highlights British Art from 1880 to 1950 covering the social upheaval of two world wars. Look out for works by LS Lowry including The Fever Van, showing an ambulance arriving at a Salford terraced house to collect a patient, probably suffering from diphtheria or scarlet fever, which were both widespread in industrial Britain in the 1930s. www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/walker-art-gallery

Liverpool has such a rich and varied maritime history, and if you want to find out a little more about what it was like to be setting sail on vessels coming and going from the River Mersey – either as a passenger or crew – then check out the Life On Board exhibition.

One of the museum’s permanent displays, Life on Board explores the moving and fascinating stories of Liverpool’s seafarers and passengers from the stories of merchant sailors who drove the city’s prosperity, to tales of the well-off passengers who journeyed aboard leisure liners.

Tate Liverpool has an incredible exhibition of one of Britain’s most celebrated portrait artists, Lucian Freud, on this autumn/winter. And, alongside his works focusing on some famous sitters, Lucian Freud: Real Lives also features self-portraits of the artist including the early Man with a Thistle oil on canvas which he painted in 1946. This portrait shows how his work had a more linear graphic style in his early career before evolving into the fleshier, painterly style he became synonymous with in his later years. The Beatles Story – a backstage gem from the quiet Beatle The Beatles Story at Albert Dock is packed with memorabilia which Fab Four fans love, and this piece is no exception. It’s not the prettiest, but it’s something special. A heavily-stained set list in blue and black ink titled ‘George Side 1’, used by George Harrison during his last tour at Japan’s Tokyo Dome on December 17, 1991, is accompanied by an invitation ticket to the concert and signed letter of authenticity from the owner. The set list features on page 117 of Live in Japan, a limited-edition book set with CDs published in 1993 by Harrison and Eric Clapton. www.beatlesstory.com/albert-dock/ 13

here aren’t too many laughs on the circuit more distinctive than Alan Carr’s and it’s all part of an unmistakably excitable style that’s made the Chatty Man a bit of a comedy institution.

Not so much a national treasure, he jokes. More a regional trinket …

Hence the title of his latest tour, which comes to the Liverpool Empire for two nights this October.

After having to postpone the tour last year due to Covid, what’s it like to finally perform live again?

“Theatres spend all their money on the punters, which means that some of the dressing rooms are really grotty. But when I walk into a dressing room now, I’ve never been so happy to see a badly stuffed sofa, a wobbly ironing board, a TV that never works and a kettle that doesn’t function. I say to myself, ‘oh, Alan, I’m home!’

“But they loved it. I’ve never had a reaction like that in Soho. I thought, if I can get you lot to crack a smile, it must be a good show!”

Is it good to be able to connect with fans again?

“They’re all lovely. I love a good chat with them, although I have had a few weird experiences. At the stage door once in Dundee, I was doing selfies when suddenly I could feel something tugging at my leg.

One of my fans was trying to undo my shoe and steal it!

But if he wasn’t being quite so self-deprecating, even he’d have to admit that his rise to the comedy A-list has been a pretty impressive one.

“I’m so excited about it, I can’t wait to get out there again. Don’t get me wrong, when I’m waiting in the wings to go on stage, I’m thinking, oh my God, why am I doing this? Can I get my job back at Tesco?

After becoming a fixture on the Manchester scene, Alan made the break into TV in the mid-2000s alongside Justin Lee Collins with Channel 4’s The Friday Night Project.

“However, as soon as I go on, the buzz is amazing.

You ask any comedian – when a brand-new joke you have worked on gets a big cheer or a laugh, it’s a wonderful feeling.

Since then, he’s successfully split his time between TV appearances on shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and RuPaul’s Drag Race as well as his own Bafta-winning Chatty Man chat show, with live stand-up tours.

“During lockdown, I’ve just realised how much I love stand-up and the interaction with the audience.

"You hear ‘national treasure’ said about some people and think, don’t make me laugh.

“Oh my God, I realise now that I’m going be one of those Ken Dodd or Joan Rivers kind of performers still doing shows at the age of 98, even if no one turns up!”

“I don’t see myself like that, so I thought it would be funny to call myself ’Regional Trinket’. Why go high when you can go low?”

Do you think audiences will be as happy as you to get back out there?

After five years away from live gigs, the 45-year-old is now back on the road with his Regional Trinket tour, charting all the highs (his glitzy, celeby wedding) and the lows (spending lockdown on a farm) that have happened in his break.

Basically, it’s dedicated to finding the joy in the small things, especially as he admits he regressed to doing all the things he enjoyed as a 13-year-old. “Like birdwatching, jigsaw puzzles, Cluedo,” he explains.

“It was a surprise that I didn’t start playing Knock Down Ginger!”

With two Liverpool dates coming up, Navigator sat down for 10 minutes with Alan Carr …

“During the warm-ups for this tour, I got the impression that everyone was just so excited to be out of the house! People were howling with laughter – I didn’t know whether the jokes were that good or they were just happy to be out.

“There is a pent-up desire for the shared experience of a live show. You can feel it in the air. I did a run of shows in Soho and Soho audiences can be quite hard to please, they’re people who have seen and done everything.
