Sustainable Hostel Project Site - Bir Billing, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
The site is located in Bir Khas, a popular touristy village and attraction in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The site also has a considerable slope and low heighted contours, towards the Village Suja, that has been taken advantage of when designing.
Material Expression The expression of the materials is celebrated through the use of fair-faced concrete, rammed earth and local stone. The stabilised rammed earth walls strongly depict the natural hues of the earth and surrounding topography. The conversation continues in the internal courts with the use of local stone in the courtyards and ‘Jaali’ screens which filter the harsh summer sun.
Rammed Earth - The strength and solidity of EARTH
Rammed Earth construction is a process of compressing a damp mixture of earth that has suitable proportions of sand, gravel and clay into an external supported frame that holds the shape of a wall section creating a solid wall of earth.
Adobe Blocks - The affordability & timelessness of EARTH
The tradition of making sun dried raw earth bricks popularly known as adobes goes back to the beginning of human society. Adobe is versatile, viable and provides great flexibility in the construction of earth buildings. These bricks are fireproof, non toxic and has an excellent thermal performance. Adobe buildings can be found across continents where it has been spontaneously and continuously adapted by people of different cultures for housing as well as monumental structures.
CSEB - The engineered modern age EARTH
(CSEBs) are made in a manual press using a mixture of earth with 5% cement. Some of the advantages of using CSEBs for construction are that they can be made on site and their manufacture needs much less energy and reduces pollution.
Site Plan The two-storey dwelling sits on an irregularly shaped site that is surrounded by farmland. A primary goal for the design team was to create an "architecture that belongs to the place and merges with its surrounding farmlands.” The buildings were designed to respond to environmental factors such as wind direction and heavy rains, but also to reflect the local architecture of the community through the communal features and adaption of local construction techniques.

The building’s architecture explores the plastic abilities of mud in order to create a stronger identity. Mud is regarded as poor and old-fashioned material and inferior to brick for example. But to us, it doesn’t matter how old the material is, it is a matter of our creative ability to use it in a contemporary way. To show the beauty and capacity of mud, it is needed to bring out the best of it and not just to treat it as a cheaper version to brick.

SKILL TRA BLOCK 1
India lives in its villages, and while the cities have grown immensely over the last 20 years, rural areas have not seen that kind of development. Rural areas are still plagued by problems of malnourishment, illiteracy, unemployment and lack of basic infrastructure. An encompassing environment has the power to influence and sway over an individual moods, decision making capacities, personality, social behaviour and physical as well as mental health. The project aims to be a democratic and inclusive public space - the focus of activity of the community while also emphasising on the need for an architectural intervention in a rural setting that is slowly but surely heading down the path of disorganised growth that has crippled our cities, through Sustainable rural living & Income generation opportunities.

Act of Building
FOR THEM, WITH THEM EXPERIENCE THROUGH IMMERSION The project will have special construction organisation: there is no professional constructors/ contractors, around few local villagers leading the whole construction and also training the local youth. They won’t be only the builders of the centre but also the users.
LEARN THROUGH BUILDING Local villagers have natural recognition of cultural identity to the earth structures because they have been lived in the earth house for thousands of years. However, this recognition of cultural identity is weaker and weaker because of the modernisation as the time goes. Now, the main aim is to bring this recognition back.
DESIGN THROUGH COLLABORATION The centre will be constructed in collaboration with local builders and craftsmen, following the methods of local building tradition, training the local youth, while introducing a simple yet innovative typology in the region.
Aspects of
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Skill Training
Disaster Management
Skill Training centre provides the opportunity to learn new skills, gaining access to stone, pottery, metal and wood workshops, computer labs and a range of other environments where they can learn hands-on, employable skills.
“Probably one of the hardest climate extremes to deal with is drought, because it can come on quickly and get really bad in a hurry. Then it gets beyond just farms—it gets to communities and farms and mental health issues even, where people are really stressed and having a tough time,”
Rural Development
Community Centre
Rural development involves creation of the conducive atmosphere where there is growth of people’s self esteem through the establishment of good economic systems and social political institutions that are able to promote human dignity and respect. Rural development aims at finding the ways to improve the rural lives with participation of the rural people themselves so as to meet the required need of the rural area.
The community centre is posited as a peace offering to those members of the wider community who are skeptical about being a neighbourhood created for all the religious groups combined. Well-designed communities are places where people want to live and invest in the future. As the character of many rural communities is threatened by out-migration, loss of an economic base, and urbanisation, designing vibrant rural places is increasingly important.
Central Vision axis
Viewing Point
Viewing Angle
The design conceptualisation starts with providing the users a experience through the architecture and providing them the connection between social, cultural, environmental and economic matters and integrating diversity of interests within a community.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
BLOCK LAYOUT All main functions and volumes have been kept separated along the central vision line and reconnected to enable programmatic and social interaction within the building as well as in the centre.
ORIENTATION The blocks have been kept in N-S orientation with larger walls facing the North & South to minimise the heat gain and also to fit into the topography of the site.
TRANSPARENCY & VIEWS Maximum views have been provided from the building blocks to provide transparency and an environment of openness and community interaction.
INTERMEDIATE GREEN Maximum integration between interior and exterior spaces have been kept to enhance user participation in the centre.
SITE The site for intervention of this thesis is located in Bambora Village, a small village with a multi ethnic population of 4000, in Alwar district of Rajasthan. Bambora Village is located on State Highway 25, connecting Alwar to Delhi. With a total site area of 14110 sq. m, the site has a uphill terrain with contour difference of 2m.
Project Proposal The project Sadbhavna Mandap is brought by Ministry of Minority Affairs & Ministry of Rural Development to come up with a central venue for congregation for dissemination/awareness activities of various schemes and programmes of MoMA, carrying out skill development courses, social functions, communal harmony functions, trainings for health and hygiene, disaster management etc.

DISSERTATION
Permaculture - Regenerative Architecture AIM The goal of any design is to provide a solution to a problem. The problem permaculture addresses is the maximisation of human welfare achieved in a sustainable way. “The aim is to get information on systems that are Ecologically sound and Economically Viable”. Its purpose is to create living environments that are harmonious, sustainable and productive; while greatly reducing the work and energy required to maintain them. To ensure long-term survival in a way that does not make us all miserable.
OBJECTIVES •To foster a basic understanding that natural regeneration processes can be understood and worked with. •To explain that land is dynamic not static. •To clearly understand the principle "work with nature not against it”. •To identify the three main factors in sustainable systems (water, soil, diversity). •To know about set of techniques and principles for designing sustainable human settlements. •To develop observation skills, learn how nature responds to challenges and apply these ideas to human needs. •To determine to what extent permaculture resonates with the sustainable development concept.
Permaculture is a system of design that provides all the needs of humanity in a way that benefits the environment. Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of architecturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and flexibility of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people — providing them food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including architecture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, agriculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development. The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against nature; of continued and thoughtful observation rather than extensive and thoughtless action; of looking at systems in all their functions, rather than asking only one yield of them; and allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions. As the basis of permaculture is beneficial design, it can be added to all other ethical training and skills, and has the potential of taking a place in all human endeavours. With its system of applied education, research and citizen-led design permaculture can be a popular web of global networks and developed into a global social movement. Permaculture uses observation of nature to create regenerative systems, and the place where this has been most visible has been on the landscape. There has been a growing awareness though that firstly, there is the need to pay more attention to the people’s ethic, as it is often the dynamics of people that can interfere with projects, and secondly that the principles of permaculture can be used as effectively to create vibrant, healthy and productive people and communities as they have been in landscapes.

Photography and Writing, for me is one of the best ways to capture the beauty around us and is a process of constantly examining. It breaks routines, makes ordinary things extraordinary by creating a different perspective of looking at things. A picture can be a beginning of a story or a dream and it helps in expressing things in a different language. Also being a travelling enthusiast and a writer by heart, I’ve been exploring different places, cultures, typologies and expressing my views about them through the photography. This section have collection of visuals from different corners of our vast country, India through my architectural student life.
