PERSONE OLTRE LE COSE. I supermercati sono tutti uguali se il loro compito si esaurisce nel mero assembramento di merci, ordinate per categoria e proposte al pubblico a un dato prezzo. E un pomodoro, anche quando espone il proprio profilo qualitativo e racconta il proprio itinerario produttivo, rimane assai simile agli altri pomodori. La differenza la fa chi esercita sulle cose competenza e responsabilità, la differenza la fanno le persone. E persona significa maschera, come ci ha insegnato il teatro antico; maschera, però, non indica il nascondersi ma, al contrario, il mostrarsi interpretando un ruolo. Parola comune e preziosa allo stesso tempo, persona significa anche umanità che ha coscienza di sé. Scavando dunque all’interno di un termine ricco come un frutto generoso e raro, il socio-imprenditore ritrova per intero la propria essenza che unisce la persona al professionista, la coscienza alla missione verso gli altri.

La contrapposizione classica e sterile

Finding Oneself In putting number 32 of NATURART to bed, it occurs to me that this issue will not only follow its usual routes towards readers in Pistoia, Italy, and scattered around the world, it will also travel along some new ones. Among the letters and e-mails that come to us, there was one in the last few weeks that particularly struck me. It is from a man with an American name and an Italian surname (one that I would say is Pistoiese).He asked about receiving NATURART in the United States, signing up for a total of five subscriptions to be sent to himself, his two siblings, and his two children, all American residents (as well as citizens, I imagine).

This new issue of NATURART will also go to New Mexico, taking one road to Franklin and another to Brooklyn. It will travel to people who, until now, have looked through its pages by leafing through the magazine on the web, and who, flipping through the hard copy from now on, will look for a place, the point of the world from which they left. NATURART, I realize, is not directed only to those inhabitants of Pistoia and its surroundings who want to be better acquainted with the district in which they live or to those who have never been in this part of Tuscany and who - perhaps - will come visit us. For some readers, who are faraway because of family or professional reasons, or perhaps because of fate, or even a place for discovering something (a landscape, a monument, a story: everything that may belong to their roots) as well as oneself.

Nel chiudere il numero 32 di NATURART, prima che tutto venga spedito in tipografia per la stampa, mi viene in mente che questo fascicolo non solo percorrerà i soliti sentieri, verso i lettori pistoiesi, italiani e sparsi per il mondo; ma ne percorrerà anche alcuni nuovi. Tra le lettere e le email che ci arrivano, una mi ha colpito in maniera particolare nelle ultime settimane: è di un signore dal nome americano e dal cognome italiano (un cognome che anzi direi pistoiese) che dagli Stati Uniti ha chiesto di poter ricevere NATURART e che ha sottoscritto contemporaneamente cinque abbonamenti: per sé, per i due fratelli e per i due figli, tutti residenti (e, immagino, cittadini) americani.

Andrà anche in New Mexico, prenderà la strada per Franklin e quella per Brooklyn, il nuovo numero di NATURART. Viaggerà verso persone che, nelle sue pagine, hanno cercato (fino ad oggi sfogliando la rivista sul web) e cercheranno (sfogliandone d’ora in avanti la copia cartacea) un luogo amato, il punto del mondo dal quale sono partiti.

NATURART, mi rendo conto, non è solo rivolta ai cittadini di Pistoia e dintorni che vogliano conoscere meglio il territorio nel quale vivono o a coloro che non sono mai stati in questa parte della Toscana e che – magari – verranno a farci visita.

Per alcuni lettori, lontani per ragioni familiari e professionali o forse per destino, può rappresentare anche uno spazio per ritrovare qualcosa (un paesaggio, un monumento, una storia: tutto ciò che può appartenere alle proprie radici) e per ritrovarsi.

A collective vision for the future

Al momento della nomina a Presidente della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia ho avuto modo di sottolineare nel programma di mandato presentato al Consiglio Generale dell’ente che, a fronte di una lunga e prolungata crisi che il territorio della provincia di Pistoia stava attraversando, era necessario elaborare, assieme agli altri soggetti pubblici e privati della nostra realtà locale, una strategia comune, una visone collettiva per il futuro del territorio all’interno della quale anche la nostra fondazione avrebbe dovuto avere un ruolo propositivo e lungimirante.

In relazione a tale impulso proattivo si colloca la proposta di Fondazione Pistoia Musei che è l’ultimo grande progetto promosso da Fondazione Caript e gestito dalla sua società strumentale Pistoia Eventi Culturali. Un progetto importante e impegnativo, che – anche tenuto conto degli effetti positivi registrati dall’elezione nel 2017 a Capitale Italiana della Cultura – si pone l’obiettivo di offrire a Pistoia, ai suoi abitanti e ai visitatori un programma di iniziative culturali e artistiche articolato e attrattivo, affinché la nostra città si affermi sempre di più come meta prediletta dal turismo culturale e possa valorizzare e promuovere il suo patrimonio.

Quattro diverse sedi situate nel cuore del centro storico daranno vita al nuovo sistema museale Fondazione Pistoia Musei: Palazzo de’ Rossi e la sua collezione permanente dedicata all’arte pistoiese del Novecento, nata nel 1992 con l’acquisizione di un insieme di disegni e dipinti del pittore e scultore Corrado Zanzotto; Palazzo Buontalenti, sede espositiva rinnovata e dedicata alle mostre temporanee; l’Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, museo ricco, articolato ed eterogeneo, custode di preziosi capolavori come l’Arazzo ‘millefiori’; e San Salvatore, un piccolo museo che racconterà l’antica Pistoia attraverso varietà di linguaggi, interazione digitale, e nuove scoperte.

La cultura è un faro nella rotta per lo sviluppo del territorio e con Fondazione Pistoia Musei il nostro ente si impegna a investire importanti risorse nella valorizzazione culturale della provincia di Pistoia, rafforzando la sua presenza in un settore che la vede già protagonista, in particolar modo sul fronte musicale, con importanti rassegne di musica da camera, sinfonica e jazz, oltre all’annuale festival di antropologia del contemporaneo Pistoia – Dialoghi sull’uomo.

At the time of my appointment as president of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia, I had the opportunity to highlight the mandated program presented to the institution’s general council. In the face of the long, drawn-out crisis that the province of Pistoia was facing, it was necessary, along with other local public and private players, to develop a common strategy, a collective vision for the future of the district within which our foundation would have a proactive, visionary role.

Related to this proactive momentum is the Fondazione Pistoia Musei’s proposal, the latest major project promoted by the Fondazione Caript and managed by its operating enterprise, Pistoia Eventi Culturali. Moreover, taking into account the positive effects of the city’s election as the Italian Capital of Culture in 2017, this important and challenging project will offer Pistoia, its inhabitants, and visitors an attractive, comprehensive program of cultural and artistic initiatives, thus enabling our city to become increasingly established as a favored destination for cultural tourism that will enhance and promote its heritage.

Four different locations located in the heart of the historical center will form Fondazione Pistoia Musei’s new museum system: Palazzo de’ Rossi and its permanent collection of Pistoia art in the 20th century, begun in 1992 with the acquisition of a group of drawings and paintings by the painter and sculptor Corrado Zanzotto; Palazzo Buontalenti, renovated exhibition center dedicated to temporary exhibitions; the Ancient Bishops’ Palace, a rich, wideranging, and diverse museum, guardian of such precious masterpieces as the mille-fleurs tapestry; and San Salvatore, a small museum that will tell about old Pistoia using a variety of languages, digital interactions, and new discoveries.

Culture is a beacon along the route to developing the district. With the Fondazione Pistoia Musei, our institution has committed to investing considerable funds to culturally enhance the province of Pistoia, strengthening its presence in a sector in which it already plays a leading role, especially in terms of music, with important festivals offering chamber and symphonic music as well as jazz, in addition to the annual anthropological festival of the contemporary, Pistoia Dialogues on man.

Malconsiglio e la retrostante via di Santo Stefano. Questi necessari ambienti erano anche collegati con il cortile interno centrale, da cui i proprietari e i loro ospiti, smontati di carrozza, potevano accedere mediante la scala antica ai piani superiori, oppure recarsi direttamente al teatrino.

Esso era usato soprattutto in Carnevale e durante l’estate, per giocose rappresentazioni come commedie, “burlette” in maschera, melodrammi musicali.

Con grande accortezza, il teatrino era stato realizzato entro parte di quelle stanze di servizio e della stalla – che venne trasferita altrove – per evitare che trapelassero all’esterno, con troppa evidenza, gli schiamazzi anche molto liberi con cui i presenti partecipavano agli intrattenimenti buffoneschi e comici.

ell’antico palazzo un tempo della nobile famiglia Gatteschi, in via del Can Bianco a Pistoia, esiste tutt’ora un delizioso teatrino d’inizio Settecento.

Ridotto, fra Otto e Novecento, a magazzino e fondaco, è stato restaurato nel 2014 a cura dei proprietari, recuperandone l’originaria bellezza, ed è passato nel 2018 agli Istituti Raggruppati.

Le ridotte dimensioni di questo luogo d’intrattenimento e di svago, dalle importanti decorazioni in pittura e stucco, ne rivelano l’uso esclusivo da parte dei membri dell’illustre casato e dei loro aristocratici ospiti. La capienza della piccola platea non doveva essere superiore ad una ventina di persone o poco più, sedute con un certo agio, tenendo anche conto delle ricche ed ampie vesti delle ‘damine’ di allora.

Dalla planimetria del piano terreno del palazzo Gatteschi – suddiviso, fra Otto e Novecento, in diverse proprietà immobiliari, e fatto oggetto di ulteriori parcellizzazioni anche più di recente – si riesce ad individuare la preesistente serie di ambienti entro cui il teatrino fu abilmente ricavato. Da una decorosa stanza prospiciente sulla via principale, a destra del portone d’ingresso, che nelle nobili dimore dei secoli XVI-XVII serviva a vari usi (da studio professionale ad archivio e salottino per gli ospiti in visita), mediante altri vani di passo, prevalentemente di servizio, si arrivava un tempo alla rimessa per le carrozze e alla stalla situate in angolo fra vicolo

Il dipinto allude in modo evidente ad un momento storico in cui si festeggiava la pace recuperata e la fine di un pesante periodo di guerre (tanto da rendere possibili le nozze anche per un militare e cavaliere ascritto a prestigiosi ordini equestri), ma rivela anche il diretto rapporto della “trovata” del putto che scolpisce nello stemma i due blasoni nobiliari con l’analoga figurazione eseguita ai primi del Settecento, in palazzo Marchetti.

L’allusione alla pace dopo pericolosi eventi bellici non può che riferirsi alla vittoria della Cristianità sui turchi a Zenta (1697), seguita dalla pace di Carlowitz, con cui le truppe imperiali, insieme con gli alleati (fra cui i combattenti dei principali ordini equestri italiani e toscani), mettevano fine all’avanzata degli eserciti musulmani verso l’Europa.

Pertanto, la redazione architettonica del teatrino Gatteschi va messa in relazione con gli sponsali del 1707: dato — che in quei tempi era uso, in Il pittore, probabilmente ogni famiglia del patriziato, da identificare con il noto commemorare un simile fausto quadraturista e ‘figurista’ Rinaldo evento lasciandone stabile ricordo Botti (1658-1740), attivo anche nel palazzo di residenza mediante a Pistoia insieme con gli artisti un’impresa artistica di rilievo, che granducali della corte di Cosimo ne accrescesse il prestigio sociale.

III, Pier Dandini (1646 – 1712) e Nicolò Lapi (1661 – 1732), al cui stile L’elegantissima conformazione dell’articolazione interna del egli si riferisce, ebbe l’incarico di teatrino Gatteschi, in cui le raffigurare qui, nobilitandola con riferimenti classici, l’allegoria delle membrature architettoniche eseguite in muratura sono nozze, celebrate nel 1707, fra il nobile cavaliere Pistoletto Gatteschi riscattate da un’abile progettazione Junior, figlio del cavalier e capitano delle stesure decorative in pittura e stucchi, rivela la paternità Giovanni Iacopo, a sua volta figlio del sergente maggiore Pistoletto del del “disegno” da ascrivere all’importante e ancora poco studiato architetto e canonico approdata a fine Seicento al mondo ristretto della politica, del governo cittadino, delle professioni forensi e della cultura.

Nonostante la mancanza di una documentazione diretta sull’allestimento del teatrino, grazie all’affresco dipinto entro cornice circolare, al centro della volta che copre la piccola platea, è possibile datare l’intervento all’inizio del Settecento.

Ivi è raffigurata la coppia di Venere e Marte, sormontata dalla figura radiante della Pace che compare in alto sulle nubi, mentre alcuni putti portano via le armi guerresche, altri due sono rispettivamente intenti a scolpire su un unico stemma in pietra i due blasoni Gatteschi e Bracciolini, ed a mostrare in un cartiglio la scritta “IN UTROQUE”, alludente ad un’unione matrimoniale fra le due famiglie, la cui ascesa sociale si doveva prevalentemente alla carriera militare.

— L’interno del teatrino è suddiviso in tre ambienti.

Dall’originaria porta di accesso, attualmente richiusa, che si apriva sul lato sud, si accedeva alla piccola platea. Un arcoscenico, decorato finemente in stucco (così come l’imposta della cupoletta che sormonta la platea stessa), separa questa parte della “scena”, quadrangolare, coperta da volticina a botte, il cui fondale reca, ai due lati, due porticciole per l’entrata e l’uscita degli attori. Il terzo ambiente, chiaramente di servizio, consiste in un corridoio sulla testata nord, che a destra immette in un vano ad uso di cucina, a sinistra porta ad una scaletta interna che conduce al soppalco sopra la scena, dove all’occorrenza prendevano posto i musicanti.

Tale parte, evidentemente, rimaneva nascosta agli occhi degli spettatori e permetteva non solo lo svolgimento della rappresentazione ma anche, molto probabilmente, la possibilità di preparare, da parte della servitù, bibite e “rinfreschi” da offrire agli spettatori.

All’interno l’addobbo decorativo assai poco ricco e studiato sopperisce alla modestia dei materiali da costruzione, in semplice muratura.

un’apertura ad arco che dà luce al soppalco retrostante, destinato ai musici: una particolare suggestione dovevano dare ad essa quasi rendendola viva, i molti lumi ad olio accesi, dalla mobile fiamma, che illuminavano quell’ambiente dov’era celata l’orchestra, e da cui la musica si diffondeva nel teatrino.

Lo stile di questi stucchi rimanda all’espertissima mano di uno dei più importanti maestri plasticatori del tempo, Giovan Battista Ciceri (metà del Settecento-1715) che, com’è noto, si avvaleva dei disegni del famoso scultore e architetto granducale Giovan Battista Foggini (1652-1725).

Al Ciceri sono da assegnare anche i raffinati cartigli in stucco, già di gusto rococò, che occupano i quattro pennacchi di raccordo della volta a vela che copre la platea con la finta cupoletta circolare con l’affresco di Venere e Marte. ☜

Nella zona di separazione fra platea e scena, le due colonne in stile ‘tuscanico’, che sostengono l’arcata, sono dipinte in finto marmo “mischio”, rosso cupo con venature gialle; altre simili colonne, questa volta dipinte à trompel’oeil, sostengono le finte arcate includenti raffigurazioni, nelle due pareti laterali attigue.

Sulla trabeazione dell’arcoscenico, decorata in stucco, si erge al centro l’elegantissima allegoria della Pace, che ‘si fonda’ sulla cultura quando sono abbandonate le armi guerresche: qui rappresentate – sovrastate da una pila di libri sopra i quali poggia i piedi la Pace – sparpagliate a terra, lungo il fronte dell’architrave. n the former palace of the noble Gatteschi family, in Via del Can Bianco in Pistoia, there is still a delightful 18th-century theater.

Between the 19th and 20th centuries, it was reduced to serving as a warehouse.

Restored to its original beauty by the owners in 2014, it passed to the Istituti Raggruppati in 2018.

With its remarkable painting and stucco decorations, the small size of this entertainment and leisure venue reveals its exclusive use by members of this illustrious family and their aristocratic guests. The audience capacity must have been small, accommodating not more than twenty or so, which offered seating with a certain ease, taking into account also the rich and ample robes of the ladies of that period.

Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the building was divided into several properties, with additional, even more recent subdivisions. Nonetheless, the pre-existing series of rooms from which the theater was cleverly constructed can be identified from a ground floor plan of Palazzo Gatteschi. Located at the corner between Vicolo Malconsiglio and the back of Via di Santo Stefano, the carriage shed and stables were reached by passing through other, mainly service rooms, departing from a dignified room that overlooked the main street and was set to the right of the entrance door. In 16th- and 17th-centuries, noble residences used this room for various purposes (e.g., professional office, archives, or a drawing room to receive guests). These necessary rooms were also connected to the central inner courtyard from which, having

alighted from their carriages, the owners and their guests could enter using the antique staircase to the upper floors or go directly to the theater.

It was used mainly during Carnival and the summer, for such lighthearted entertainments as comedies, masked burlettas, and musical melodramas.

The theater was very cleverly built using part of the previously mentioned service rooms and stable – with the latter moved elsewhere – to prevent from being too easily heard outside the palace the continuous enthusiastic racket with which the audience participated in the clownish and comic entertainment.

— The theater’s construction in Palazzo Gatteschi – this impressive entertainment setting for aristocratic hospitality – marked the pinnacle of the family’s fortunes and social ascent that, since its beginnings in the 1500s, had been based on the military careers of many of the its members. By the late 1600s, the family was involved in the elite world of politics, city government, the law, and culture.

Despite the lack of direct evidence regarding the theater’s construction, the fresco painted within a circular frame in the middle of the ceiling covering the small parterre makes it possible to date the work to the beginning of the 18th century.

— The painter was probably the famous quadraturist and “figure painter” Rinaldo Botti (1658-1740), also active in Pistoia together with the grand-ducal artists of the court of Cosimo III, Pier Dandini (1646 - 1712) and Nicolò Lapi (1661 - 1732), to whose style he refers.

He was commissioned to depict, with

the coat-of-arms on the two noble blazons also reveals a direct relationship to a similar figuration from the early 18th century in Palazzo Marchetti.

The allusion to peace after the perils of war can only refer to Christianity’s victory over the Turks at Zenta (1697), followed by the Treaty of Karlowitz, with which the imperial troops and their allies (including forces of the main Italian and Tuscan equestrian orders) put an end to the advance of the Muslim armies towards Europe.

Consequently, the architectural drafting of the Gatteschi Theater must be related

to the 1707 nuptials as, given that, at that time, every aristocratic family used it to commemorate such auspicious events, leaving a permanent record in their palace residence by means of an important artistic endeavor carried out to increase social prestige.

noble classical references, an allegory of the 1707 wedding of the noble Cavaliere Pistoletto Gatteschi the Younger, son of the cavaliere and Captain Giovanni Iacopo, in turn, son of Captain Giovanni’s Sergeant Major Pistoletto, to the noble Maria Francesca Bracciolini.

The painting clearly alludes to a historical moment in which the restoration of peace and the end of a fierce period of wars were celebrated (enough to make a wedding possible for a soldier and knight attached to a prestigious equestrian order). However, the “clever idea” of the putto’s carving

— The theater interior is divided into three areas. The original, now sealed access door opened on the south side to access the small parterre. A proscenium arch, finely decorated in stucco (as well as the ceiling of the cupola above the parterre itself) separates this part of the quadrangular setting, which is covered by a small barrel vault. At the back are two doors on either side that served as the entry and exit for the actors.

Clearly a utility room, the third area has a corridor on the north end that, on the right, leads into a kitchen and, on the left, leads to an internal staircase to the mezzanine above the stage, where the musicians played. This part was obviously hidden from audiences, thus permitting performances not only to be carried out but most probably, also gave the servants the possibility to prepare drinks and “refreshments” for the spectators.

Inside, the not very sumptuous or well thought-out ornamental decoration compensates for the modesty of the building materials, in simple masonry.

The greatest ornamental display is concentrated in the parterre, where both the architectural structure and the internal figurative and decorative plan are highly integrated and organically designed.

In the area separating the parterre and the stage, the two Tuscan-style columns supporting the arch are painted in a faux multicolored inlaid marble in dark red with yellow veining. Other similar columns, painted in trompe-l’oeil,

support the blind arcades that include depictions on the two adjacent side walls.

The trabeation of the proscenium arch, decorated in stucco, displays the elegant allegory of Peace, based on the culture when the weapons of war were abandoned. Dominated by a pile of books on which Peace rests her feet, the weapons are depicted scattered on the ground, along the front of the architrave.

The animated figure of the winged Peace stands out in an arched opening that lights the musicians’ loft behind it. It must have been particularly suggestive with the moving flames of the many lighted oil lamps making it almost seem alive, lighting the room where the orchestra was hidden and from which the music spread throughout the theater.

The style of these stuccos refers to the extremely expert hand of one of the most important master modelers of the time, Giovan Battista Ciceri (mid-18th century-1715) who famously made use of drawings by the famous sculptor and grand-ducal architect Giovan Battista Foggini (1652-1725).

The refined, now rococo-style stucco cartouches, which occupies the four connecting pendentives of the vaulted ceiling covering the parterre and a faux circular dome with a fresco of Venus and Mars, can also be assigned to Ciceri. ☜

om’era Pistoia 2 milioni d’anni fa e come le acque e l’ingegno umano profuso per la loro gestione abbiano formato e trasformato la città e l’intera pianura circostante fino ai giorni nostri: un affascinante viaggio nel tempo reso possibile dal progetto “Disegni d’Acqua” che ha portato all’allestimento di una mostra itinerante, attraverso pannelli descrittivi, cartografie e fotografie, cui si aggiungono innovative ricostruzioni multimediali realizzate con le più avanzate tecniche di virtual landscaping.

Il progetto si è concentrato sul ruolo dell’acqua nelle trasformazioni, naturale o antropiche, del territorio nel lunghissimo arco temporale compreso tra il Pliocene e l’Età Contemporanea lasciando tracce ancor oggi visibili nel paesaggio pistoiese. Lo studio, fin dove cronologicamente possibile, è stato realizzato secondo l’approccio della ricerca storico geografica o altrimenti facendo affidamento su una serie di studi e modellizzazioni di taglio geologico e archeologico e sull’uso di documenti storici come mappe, disegni, pitture e documenti vari disponibili, in particolare, dopo il diciottesimo secolo.

— La scelta finale è stata di suddividere la linea del tempo in sei periodi ponendo l’accento su alcuni degli eventi, o degli interventi, che hanno in qualche modo segnato l’avvio di una nuova fase, lasciando segni profondi nel paesaggio. A ogni segmento temporale corrisponde una sorta di “isola”, uno spazio espositivo chiaramente identificabile e strutturato in modo da raccontare una storia, facendo ricorso a strumenti narrativi diversi che trovano sintesi e conclusione in una grafica che è appunto un “disegno d’acqua” e in un video che ricostruisce in maniera virtuale il paesaggio storico.

Il primo video, copre il periodo dalla fine del Pliocene superiore fino al Pleistocene superiore durante il quale la pianura subisce importante trasformazioni: viene prima occupata da un

territorio si trasforma con il noto sistema di suddivisione agraria della “centuriazione”. Ai primi insediamenti romani, tra il II e il I sec. a.C., Pistoia non è ancora una città vera e propria e bisogna aspettare l’età imperiale (nel I sec. d.C.) per vedere la struttura di una città caratterizzata da chiari indicatori di tipo urbanistico.

— La quarta “isola temporale riguarda l’epoca medievale durante la quale la città cambia forma in modo significativo, aumentando la sua superficie con la costruzione di nuove mura a partire dagli anni ’80 del XII sec. In quest’epoca fiumi come la Bure, la Brana o la Stella vengono deviati per lottare contro gli allagamenti mentre altri come l’Ombroncello cambiano funzione passando da fosso antemurale a canale urbano.

fiume chiamato Paleo Nievole per poi evolversi verso un lago pleistocenico e ancora, nel pleistocene superiore, assomigliare alla pianura che conosciamo ad eccezione di altre zone palustri di diversa entità ed estensione.

La seconda ricostruzione parte dal Paleolitico e la presenza di piccoli insediamenti legati all’attività venatoria, distribuiti sui terrazzi fluviali di bassa quota, nelle aree del Monteferrato e del versante occidentale del Montalbano, fino all’arrivo di una nuova popolazione, i Liguri, nella metà del III sec. a.C. La romanizzazione del territorio pistoiese, illustrata la sezione successiva, viene avviata nel corso del II sec. a.C. con lo sviluppo di una solida rete viaria, tra cui in particolare la via Cassia, su un percorso già attivo in periodo etrusco e ancora oggi chiaramente riconoscibile; il

L’età moderna, quinto periodo del progetto, è caratterizzata da numerosi interventi di regimazione e sistemazione dei corsi d’acqua in una lotta decisa contro i sempre più evidenti problemi di natura idraulica. Tra il 1627 ed il 1628 vengono adeguati e allargati gli alvei di Ombrone, Stella, Calice e Brana, con conseguente trasformazione di diversi ponti come Ponte Lungo, di Bonelle, della Pergola e del Castellare. E’ questo il periodo di massima espansione del sistema delle gore funzionale all’approvvigionamento idrico e all’alimentazione di molti opifici per la produzione di tessuti di lana e seta, la concia delle pelli e la trasformazione del ferro.

— Nella sesta e ultima scansione temporale della ricerca, dedicata all’età contemporanea, si evidenzia come ancora all’inizio nel XX sec., la pianura pistoiese sia composta da coltivazioni e da numerose ville signorili, testimonianze di una vocazione ancora principalmente agricola. È con l’inizio del ‘900, contestualmente alla rapida crescita del vivaismo, che la pianura conosce un forte sviluppo industriale, urbanistico e demografico che trasformerà, in maniera irreversibile, il paesaggio pistoiese. I problemi idraulici di tale nuovo assetto sono ancora oggi numerosi e necessitano di un’attenta gestione da parte degli enti preposti - tra cui il Consorzio di Bonifica - con l’obiettivo strategico e condiviso di restituire spazi alla dinamica fluviale, grazie ad esempio alla realizzazione delle casse di espansione, opere idrauliche che costituiscono anche occasione per una più generale riqualificazione ambientale e naturalistica. ☜

hat was Pistoia like 2 million years ago?

Moreover, how have the city and the entire surrounding plain been shaped and transformed by water and human ingenuity in its management up until today? This fascinating journey through time has been made possible through the “Disegni d’Acqua” (Water Drawings) project, and led to the preparation of a traveling exhibition, using descriptive panels, maps, and photographs to which innovative multimedia reconstructions using the most advanced virtual landscaping techniques have been added.

The project focused on the role of water in local natural or anthropological transformations during the very long time period ranging from the Pliocene to the Contemporary Age. They have left traces still visible today in the Pistoia landscape. As far as was chronologically possible, the study was carried out in line with historical geographical research or otherwise relied on a series of studies, the modeling of geological and archaeological cuts, and the use of historical documents (i.e., maps, drawings, paintings, and various available documents) particularly after the 18th century.

— The final choice was to divide the timeline into six periods with emphasis on certain events or interventions that somehow marked the start of a new phase, leaving deep marks in the landscape. Each time-segment corresponds to a sort of “island”, a clearly identifiable exhibit structured to tell a story, using assorted narrative tools that find synthesis and conclusion in a graphic that is a “water drawing” plus a video that gives a virtual reconstruction of the historical landscape.

The first video covers the period from the end of the Upper Pliocene to the Upper Pleistocene during which the plain underwent important transformations.

It was first occupied by a river called the Paleo Nievole, which then developed towards a Pleistocene lake. In the upper Pleistocene, it again resembled the plain with which we are familiar, apart from various stretches of other, differently sized marsh areas.

The second reconstruction starts in the Paleolithic with the presence of small hunting settlements, distributed on the low-elevation river terraces, in the Monteferrato areas and on the western side of Montalbano, until the arrival of a new population, the Ligurians, in the mid-3rd-century B.C. The Romanization of the Pistoia territory, illustrated in the next section, was launched during the 2nd century.

road network, among which was the Cassian Way, on a route already active in the Etruscan period and still clearly recognizable today. The territory was transformed through “centuriation”, the well-known system of agrarian subdivision. At the time of the first Roman settlements, between the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C., Pistoia was not yet a proper city. It was not until the Imperial Age (in the 1st century A.D.) that the city’s layout could be seen, distinguished by clear indicators of urban planning.

— The fourth “time island” concerns the medieval period during which the city’s shape changed significantly, its surface area increasing with the construction of the new walls that began in the 1180s.

During this time, such rivers as the Bure, the Brana, and the Stella were diverted to fight flooding, while others, like the Ombroncello, had their function changed from a rampart moat to an urban canal.

The project’s fifth period is the modern age, exemplified by numerous measures of regulation and the organization of watercourses in a decisive struggle against increasingly obvious hydraulic problems. Between 1627 and 1628, the riverbeds of Ombrone, Stella, Calice, and Brana were adapted and widened, with the resulting transformation of several bridges such as Ponte Lungo, di Bonelle, della Pergola, and Castellare. a period of maximum expansion of the working mill-race system to supply water and hydraulic power to the many factories producing wool and silk fabrics, tanning leather, and working iron.

— It is evident in research of the sixth and last time scan, dedicated to the contemporary age, how the Pistoia plain consisted of crops and numerous stately villas at the beginning in the 20th century, evidence of still mainly agricultural activities. At the beginning of the 1900s, industry, the plain experienced robust industrial, urban,

bimbe and demographic development that, together with the rapid growth of the nursery business, would permanently transform the Pistoia landscape. This new framework still today has numerous hydraulic problems that require careful management by the oversight organizations – including the Consorzio di Bonifica (Reclamation Consortium) – with the shared strategic objective of restoring spaces to river dynamics, through, for example, the construction of detention basins and hydraulic works that are also an opportunity for a more general environmental and natural redevelopment. ☜

roppo spesso la civiltà metropolitana dimentica che deve molto alle terre alte: dai monti scende a valle l’acqua delle piogge e delle nevi, grazie agli alberi dei boschi respiriamo amiamo parliamo e non di rado la grande Storia è passata prima dalle colline e dalle montagne che dalle città. I paesi e i borghi alti, nati intorno a Pistoia, Prato e Firenze, esistevano già quando ancora le paludi stavano ammorbando la grande piana e la gente di montagna è ancora lì a testimoniarlo.

— Allora rifuggiva l’insalubrità dell’aria e si insediava in luoghi spesso inospitali ed aspri; oggi chi vive in montagna ha meno disagi che in passato, ma è pur sempre il testimone di un altro vivere, coraggioso, alternativo e impopolare. C’è chi la definisce “resilienza” questa ostinazione a reagire e a perseverare nonostante tutto, a vivere luoghi che altri rifuggono, ma sarebbe meglio chiamarla attaccamento alle radici, alla patria, intesa come terra dei padri, senso profondo di appartenenza ad un francobollo di terra che di per sé è insignificante, ma che da solo legittima un’esistenza. E ripetere gesti antichi, come lavorare le castagne, fare i necci o realizzare una carbonaia, non è folclore per l’intrattenimento di turisti, ma un modo per perpetuare tradizioni nelle quali si sono riconosciute generazioni di antenati. Questo si deve pensare quando si visitano i paesi della montagna, ognuno dei quali è un po’ diverso dall’altro, ma tutti sono intimamente legati da un medesimo afflato, anche i più minuscoli borghi, come Vivaio, che si trova poco sopra Le Piastre.

Vivaio, un angolo antico Il piccolo centro abitato di Vivaio, non lontano dalla Strada Statale n° 66, ha pochi abitanti, ma ognuno di essi si può ben definire un custode amoroso delle proprie origini, della propria terra e delle attività che per generazioni hanno permesso la vita anche in un luogo così appartato.

Basta entrare nella selva, curata come fosse un giardino, per capire il rispetto quasi religioso che questa gente ha nei confronti della natura, un rispetto che non si manifesta a parole, ma con l’impegno quotidiano a custodire, nelle stagioni vive e in quelle morte, un bene prezioso, una madre che ha sfamato tanti figli, ma anche una fedele compagna di viaggio.

Gente che non ama accumulare ricchezza e che quando ha qualche soldo lo investe per piantare nuovi castagni, per riparare stalle e metati, per conservare al meglio ciò che le è stato donato dai padri. Allora è facile leggere nei loro volti un compiaciuto sorriso quando guardano da lontano i castagneti puliti o restaurano una stalluccia per metterci qualche gallina ovaiola. E’ l’orgoglio di aver raggiunto un piccolo traguardo, di sentirsi vivi e apprezzati dalla voce tacita di coloro che a Vivaio ci sono vissuti tanti e tanti anni prima.

Poco importa se a turno trascorrono nottate intere a sorvegliare affinché nel metato il fuoco si mantenga costante e non arrostisca le castagne:

conduce, attraversando

basta qualche fiammata troppo intensa che la farina viene amara e il raccolto dell’anno va perso.

Ci vuole una sapienza antica che non si impara dai libri, ma che fin da piccoli si respira osservando, più che ascoltando, e di cui si diventa umili depositari per chi voglia apprenderla.

I gesti sono quelli dei loro padri, sempre cadenzati e mai inconsulti, soprattutto quando lavorano insieme, a spazzare il castagneto dalle foglie cadute o a riparare un muretto a secco, e la fatica è ripagata dalla soddisfazione, dal rispetto di sé e dall’impegno comune. Le stingenti regole dell’economia contemporanea non arrivano a Vivaio: un orto, qualche animale, un po’ di farina dolce non rendono per l’impegno che richiedono, ma l’importante è confermarsi in questa religione antica, nell’orgoglio di saper fare da sé, di ricavare dalla terra qualche prezioso prodotto che sappia riproporre sapori antichi ormai quasi dimenticati. È la sintonia con l’ambiente il valore aggiunto e non c’è immagine più adeguata a testimoniarlo che la foto della signora che stringe al petto una gallina dal ciuffo: con lo sguardo apparentemente malinconico, la donna accarezza un’amica, una piccola compagna di viaggio. ☜

Aspettando l’inverno “Aspettando l’Inverno” è un cortometraggio di Marco Della Fonte e Rezia Corsini, prodotto nel 2006 da Ufo Film e diretto dallo stesso Della Fonte, interpretato da Teresa Fallai, Leonardo Begliomini, Giannino Corsini e Vanni Cassori, nel quale, una giovane ragazza inglese in cerca di se stessa, va in vacanza in Italia e arriva a Le Piastre, un piccolo paese della Montagna Pistoiese, dove scopre persone e storie antiche di amore e di arte, profondamente legate ai sentimenti ed al passato, trovando, finalmente, le risposte a quello che insistentemente stava cercando per dare un significato alla propria esistenza.

Un lavoro davvero emotivamente coinvolgente, caratterizzato dalla sapiente direzione fotografica di Daniele Osho Botteselle, dove si intrecciano sapientemente presente e passato, gente d’oggi - ancora testimoni del vivere in montagna - e quella di allora, impegnata nel faticoso e caratteristico lavoro di produzione del ghiaccio.

Guardando il film, una delle cose che più colpiscono lo spettatore sono le immagini dei volti, scavati dalla sgorbia del tempo, mai sorridenti e immersi in penombre che ne incrudiscono i contorni, quasi a sottolineare la crudezza della quotidianità.

Volti che, talora, brandiscono con orgoglio gli strumenti dei ghiacciaioli che, oggi, appartengono ai musei, ma che, per molto tempo, hanno dato da vivere ai Piastresi.

Sullo sfondo ci sono l’arte e la natura, coi suoi colori indicibilmente belli, che prelude al riposo.

Alla fine non resta che riflettere su ciò che la montagna era, su ciò che è oggi e su quale futuro noi, generazioni distratte, vogliamo darle in modo che i sacrifici dei nostri avi non vadano perduti in una dolorosa scomparsa dei

Attachment to one’s land, roots, and traditions: the retelling of a “resilience” with words and described with photographs

oo often urban civilization forgets that it owes much to the highlands. Rain and snow descend from the mountains down to the valley. Thanks to the trees in the woods we breathe, love and speak.

Often, the history of the world came first from the hills the mountains instead of from the cities.

The high villages, established around Pistoia, Prato and Florence, already existed when the marshes were still invading the great plain and the mountain people are still there to witness it.

At the time they would escape the unhealthy air and settle in often harsh, inhospitable places. Today those who live in the mountains have fewer privations than in the past. Nonetheless, it is still testimony to a courageous, alternative, and unpopular life.

There are those who see as “resilience” this obstinacy to react and persevere despite everything and to live in places that others shun. However, it would be better to call it an attachment to one’s roots, one’s homeland – understood as their ancestral land. There is a deep sense of belonging to a postage stamp-sized piece of land that is insignificant per se, but which by itself justifies an existence.

Moreover, repeating ancient actions, like processing chestnuts, making necci, or building a charcoal kiln, is not folklore for tourists’ entertainment, but a way of keeping alive the traditions in which generations of ancestors are recognized.

This must be considered when visiting the mountain villages, each one a little different from the other, but all of them – even the smallest villages, like Vivaio, located just above Le Piastre – are intimately linked by the same inspiration.

Vivaio, an ancient corner Not far from State Road 66 is the small village of Vivaio. Although it has few inhabitants, each one can be described as a loving custodian of their origins, of their land, and of those activities that, for generations, have also allowed living in such a secluded place.

One just needs to enter the forest, treated like a garden, to understand the almost religious respect that these people have towards nature, a respect not expressed in words, but with the daily commitment to keep, in the living as well as the dead seasons, a precious benefit, a mother who has fed many children, but also a faithful traveling companion.

People who do not like to accumulate wealth and that, when they have some money, invest it to plant new chestnut trees, repair stables and metati (chestnut drying houses), and preserve to the best of their ability that which was given to them by their ancestors.

It is easy to read a smile in their faces when they look at the chestnut trees from a distance or restore a small stall in which to put a few laying hens.

It is the pride of having reached a small milestone, of feeling alive and appreciated by the silent voice of those who lived there many years before.

It does not matter if they in turn spend entire nights watching to make sure that the fire in the metato remains constant and does not roast chestnuts. Because if the fire is too hot, the flour becomes bitter and the harvest for the year is lost.

It takes an ancient knowledge that is not learned from books, but that can be absorbed from an early age by observing, rather than listening, and makes those who want to learn become its humble depositaries.

The always rhythmic, never sudden gestures are those of their ancestors, especially when working together, either sweeping the fallen leaves from the chestnut grove or repairing a dry stone wall. Furthermore, the effort is rewarded by satisfaction, self-respect, and a shared commitment.

The faded rules of the contemporary economy do not come to Vivaio. A vegetable garden, some animals, and some sweet chestnut flour are not profitable enough for the commitment that they require. Yet it is important to be committed to this ancient religion, to the pride of knowing how to do something by oneself, to get from the earth some precious product that can reproduce almost forgotten ancient flavors.

Harmony with the environment is an added value. There is no more appropriate image to bear witness to this than the photo of a lady holding a hen by its crest to her breast. With a seemingly melancholy look, the woman pets a friend, a small traveling companion. ☜

Waiting for Winter In Rezia Corsini and Marco della Fonte’s film, “Aspettando l’inverno”, the Ghiacciaia della Madonnina, in Le Piastre is depicted, and where an emotionally engaging mix emerges between present and past, and between the people of today, still witnesses of living in the mountains, and those of the past, engaged in the hard work of ice.

However, what is most striking are the images of the faces, carved by the gouging of time, never smiling and immersed in a half-light that hardens the contours, almost to underline the harshness of everyday life.

The faces are of the ghiacciaioli (ice men) who, at times, proudly wielded these tools that today belong to museums, but which, for a long time, were used by the Piastresi to make a living. nature in autumn is in the background, its unspeakably beautiful colors, a prelude to the rest at the end of a cycle.

All that remains is to consider what the mountains were, what they are today, and what future we the neglectful generations would like to give them, so that the sacrifices of our ancestors will not be lost in unending oblivion.

Viareggio, la capitale del Carnevale, festeggia i 146 anni della sua manifestazione e lo fa in grande stile con cinque straordinari Corsi Mascherati sui Viali a mare. La città si trasformerà nella ‘fabbrica del divertimento’, tra sfilate di giganti di cartapesta, feste notturne, spettacoli pirotecnici, veglioni, rassegne teatrali e appuntamenti gastronomici. Un evento internazionale che ogni anno richiamata il pubblico ad ammirare i carri allegorici più grandi e famosi del mondo, uno spettacolo sempre nuovo, entusiasmante ed affascinante, ma allo stesso tempo una tradizione artistica e culturale che Viareggio custodisce gelosamente dal 1873.

Sono cinque i Grandi Corsi Mascherati in programma sabato 9, domenica 17 e sabato 23 febbraio, domenica 3 e martedì 5 marzo.

Sui viali a mare di Viareggio si potranno ammirare 9 carri di prima categoria (veri e propri giganti viaggianti alti oltre 20 metri e larghi 12), 5 di seconda, 9 mascherate in gruppo e 9 maschere isolate. Quello del 2019 sarà un Carnevale tutto al femminile, l’intera manifestazione sarà infatti dedicata alla donna con ospiti dal mondo dell’arte, dello spettacolo, dell’imprenditoria e del volontariato che porteranno messaggi a favore del mondo femminile.

Viareggio, capital of Carnival, celebrates its 146th “birthday” in grand style with five extraordinary masquerade parades along the town boardwalks. The city will be transformed into an “entertainment factory”, featuring parades of giant papier-mâché floats, nighttime parties, pyrotechnic shows, balls, theatrical festivals and food and wine events. It’s an international event that invites the public to admire its allegorical floats each year, among the biggest and most famous in the world; this is a spectacle that’s perpetually new, invigorating and fascinating, but at the same time an artistic and cultural tradition that Viareggio has closely guarded since 1873. There are five major masquerade parades scheduled for Saturday, February 9; Sunday, February 17 and Saturday, February 23, as well as Sunday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 5. Along the boardwalks of Viareggio visitors will be able to admire 9 first-level floats (true traveling giants, all over 20 meters high and 12 meters long); 5 in the second ranking; 9 grouped masquerades and 9 isolated ones. In 2019, Carnival will have a feminine twist: the entire exhibition will be dedicated to women, with guests from the art world, the entertainment scene, the entrepreneurial sphere, and charitable organizations who will spread positive messages for women.

La kermesse floreale si terrà per quattro fine settimana: il 16 e 17, il 23 e 24, il 30 e 31 marzo e il 6 e 7 aprile. Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia è un appuntamento fisso per gli amanti di questi romantici fiori.

I paesi di Pieve e Sant’Andrea di Compito, nel comune di Capannori, si caricano di poesia tanto da diventare una cosa sola con la rassegna: il luogo della manifestazione, infatti, è ormai definito come il Borgo delle Camelie. Nel corso delle giornate della mostra si ha la possibilità di esplorare le ville della zona, i cui giardini sono i custodi indiscussi di camelie antichissime, preservate dall’abilità e dalla passione di proprietari e giardinieri. All’elegante fiore è dedicato anche il Camelieto, che si incontra salendo verso il Monte Serra, un luogo magico, che ospita ben mille esemplari di camelie. Durante la manifestazione è possibile anche partecipare a una cerimonia del tè dal gusto orientale. Nella zona, infatti, si trova l’unica piantagione di tè in Italia, portata avanti dalla maestria di un agronomo che l’ha resa resistente anche ai freddi inverni della Lucchesia.

Il Santa Maria della Scala ospita fino al 5 maggio 2019 i capolavori della collezione Spannocchi donati al Comune nel 1835 e conservati in larga parte nella Pinacoteca Nazionale e nel Museo Civico di Siena. Le opere in mostra sono il risultato dello spirito collezionistico che interessò dapprima i Gonzaga a Mantova (da cui proviene parte della collezione) e, successivamente, le famiglie Piccolomini e Spannocchi a Siena. Fra i dipinti più importanti, preziosa risulta la tela di Albrecht Dürer con il mirabile San Girolamo, firmato e datato 1514, l’elegante Lucrezia di pittore legato alla cerchia di Lucas Cranach, La decapitazione del Battista, attribuita ad un artista tedesco collaboratore di Altdorfer e la Torre di Babele. Per la mostra sono stati anche ottenuti in prestito due straordinari pannelli di Albrecht Altdorfer raffiguranti Storie di san Floriano, conservati agli Uffizi dal 1914, ma già facenti parte della Collezione.

Until May 5, 2019, Santa Maria della Scala will host masterpieces from the Spannocchi collection donated to the Municipality in 1835 and conserved primarily in the Pinacoteca Nazionale and the Museo Civico di Siena. The Lucca province is once again preparing to host the festival that announces the arrival of spring. The floral festival takes place over four weekends: March 16 and 17, 23 and 24, 30 and 31 and April 6 and 7. Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia is a benchmark event for all lovers of these romantic flowers. The towns of Pieve and Sant’Andrea di Compito in the municipality of Capannori will be filled to the brim with so many flowers and so much fanfare that they will feel like one single place: indeed, the festival venue is known as the “Borgo delle Camelie.” Over the course of the exhibition days visitors can explore the villas of the area: their gardens hold centuries-old camellias, preserved with care and passion by property owners and gardeners. The “Camelieto” is another exposition dedicated to the elegant flower: this is a breathtaking space you’ll find climbing toward Monte Serra, holding around 1000 species of camellias.

During the event, visitors also have the chance to participate in an Eastern-inspired tea ceremony: in the area, you’ll find the only tea plant in Italy, a tradition continued through the mastery of an agronomist who’s made it resistant to even the cold winters of the Lucchesia.

I

l ritratto non è semplicemente fotografare un volto, diventa uno squarcio che ci porta dentro per estrarne il contenuto e riportarlo fuori, sotto gli occhi di tutti.

Un lavoro che si concentra sul soggetto in “una relazione” con elementi esterni.

Tutto è nato con il progetto “Wannabe” in cui uomo e animale si fondono per ricordaci da dove veniamo e che l’istinto , quella voce che abbiamo dentro ma che abbiamo addomesticato spesso mettendola a tacere, forse è l’unica cosa che può salvarci. Wannabe è la serie fotografica che nel 2014 ha aperto le porte dell’Arsenale di Venezia a Mariangela Della Notte con il concorso “Premio Arte Laguna”.

Il progetto “Solo” vede la luce tra il 2015 e il 2016. Sono fotografie scattate in un set improvvisato nella cucina di casa. Con Agnese, la sua prima figlia, ancora molto piccola,

per Mariangela diventa difficile stare tanto tempo fuori casa, ma la grande voglia di sperimentare nuove cose e dar voce a quello che sente dentro, con la stanchezza di giornate frenetiche, la casa diventa un luogo in cui estraniarsi, un dentro e un fuori, della vita quotidiana e di esperienze oltre-confine.

L’autoritratto – ci dice Mariangela – è lo strumento che ho scelto per dedicarmi ad un assolo per immagini, esattamente come può fare un musicista che, conoscendo le note ed avendo in mente una melodia, trova nell’improvvisazione un’armonia in cui si mescola l’esistente con l’irripetibile.

— Il colore l’elemento con cui entrare in relazione, da cui lasciarsi guidare anche tramite il tatto, manipolandolo e lasciando che fosse l’istinto a guidarla nella “messa in scena” del momento.

Per questo progetto la volontà è stata quella di ridurre i contenuti per facilitare l’immedesimarsi da parte dello spettatore. “Solo” parte morbido, affrontando come primo argomento quello della purezza, ma i temi sono molteplici e difficili, reali e quotidiani: l’indifferenza, il dolore, l’inganno ma anche la vita e la rinascita.

— Nella lettura delle fotografie che ne sono venute fuori, è molto difficile individuare un prima e un dopo e capire se il motivo ha generato la foto o la foto le ha voluto dire qualcosa del motivo e Il “dentro e il fuori” generano una ridondanza in cui immergersi.

Lascio che la vita di tutti i giorni mi proponga delle novità in cui imbattermi – continua Mariangela - ed alle mie figlie insegno la bellezza del cambiamento, che non è un fallimento ma un divenire in crescendo. Non c’è fine a quello che siamo e che possiamo essere: non c’è fine e la fotografia serve a testimoniarlo. ☜

Mariangela Della Notte

Nata a Pistoia nel 1982, città in cui ancora oggi vive insieme al suo compagno e alle loro due figlie. Studia psicopedagogia alle superiori, e queste materie le stimolano un forte interesse per la mente umana, le caratteristiche delle persone, la comprensione e l’osservazione.

Frequenta, dopo il diploma, un corso di Grafica Pubblicitaria, e seguono quindi anni in cui lavora prima come grafico poi come Account Manager per alcune agenzie del settore, imparando ad organizzare gruppi di lavoro, gestire clienti importanti e rappresentare l’azienda. Nel 2013, nasce il suo primo progetto fotografico. Fotografare non è una novità, lo è invece sottoporre i suoi scatti al giudizio di qualcuno esperto. Si iscrive quindi ad un Concorso di fama internazionale mettendosi alla prova più per gioco che per convinzione. Viene selezionata e si ritrova a Venezia come finalista ad esporre per la prima volta negli spazi dell’Arsenale insieme ad artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo e per Lei si apre un nuovo sipario in cui tutto ciò fatto fino a quel momento non è più il fine ma il mezzo. Durante la prima gravidanza si iscrive alla scuola di fotografia dell’Istituto Marangoni di Firenze dove studia Fotografia di Moda e di Ritratto, di fatto facendo della sua passione il proprio lavoro. Durante un Workshop di fotografia conosce Settimio Benedusi, uno dei nostri “grandi” della fotografia italiana e con lui trova il dialogo più importante, quello che forse neanche una scuola può dare: l’esperienza, il senso, il motivo, senza mai parlare di mezzi, di numeri e schemi.

Milano la vede con lui a Dicembre 2017 durante l’evento fotografico “Ricordi?”, ritratti fatti sul momento per una mostra che prende corpo ad ogni scatto, fino a riempire completamente le pareti del luogo espositivo di volti di persone. Il suo nome si elenca accanto a quello di grandi professionisti e nomi di rilievo come Toscani, Gastel, Thorimbert, Benedusi. A Gennaio 2018 sempre a Milano ed ancora una volta per il progetto “Ricordi” scatta i suoi ritratti al MIA Photo Fair, fiera internazionale di fotografia.

Mariangela ama molto Milano ma è profondamente grata alla sua città che prima di tutte ne ha apprezzato il lavoro come fotografa, chiamandola più volte di esporre le sue opere in luoghi prestigiosi ed importanti come Palazzo Fabroni.

“Wannabe” è la particolarissima serie fotografica – dove uomo e animale si fondono - che nel 2014, con il concorso “Premio Arte Laguna”, ha aperto a Mariangela Della Notte le porte dell’Arsenale di Venezia. ____ “Wannabe” is a very unique photographic series that merges humans and animals.

Thoughts Taking Shape Mariangela Della Notte, a young artist from Pistoia, has turned her great passion into a job

A

portrait is not simply photographing a face. It becomes an opening that takes us inside to extract its contents and to bring them out in full view of everyone.

A work focuses on the subject in “relation” to external elements.

Everything started with the “Wannabe” project in which humans and animals are merged, to remind us from where we come and that instinct – that interior voice of ours that we often tamed by silencing – is perhaps the only thing that can save us. Wannabe is the photographic series that opened the doors

of the Venice Arsenal in 2014 with the Arte Laguna Prize competition.

The “Solo” project took place between 2015 and 2016. The photographs were taken on an improvised set in her kitchen. With her first child Agnese still very young, it became difficult for Mariangela to spend time away from home. However, she was feeling a great internal desire to experiment with new things and to express what, with hectic days of exhaustion, the house had become – a place from which to withdraw, an inside and an outside of everyday life and of cross-border experiences.

Born in Pistoia in 1982, a city where she still lives together with her partner and their two daughters. She studied psychopedagogy in high school, a subject that inspired great interest in the human mind, people’s characteristics, understanding, and observation.

After graduating from high school, she attended a course in advertising graphics. In the following years, she worked first as a graphic artist and then as an account manager for some agencies in the sector. She learned how to organize work groups, manage important clients, and represent the company. She put together her first photographic project in 2013.

Photography was not a novelty. Instead, she presented her pictures to the opinions of some experts. She then enrolled in an internationally renowned competition, trying her hand more for the fun of it than out of any conviction.

She was selected and found herself as a finalist in Venice where she exhibited for the first time in the Arsenale’s spaces together with artists from all over the world. A new curtain went up for her in which everything she had done up until that moment was no longer the end but the means.

During her first pregnancy, she enrolled at the Istituto Marangoni’s photography school in Florence where she studied fashion photography and portraiture, thus turning her passion into her work. During a photography workshop, she met Settimio Benedusi, one of the “greats” of Italian photography. With him, she found the most important exchange that perhaps cannot be given even by a school: experience, meaning, motivation, without even talking about means, numbers, and arrangements.

In December 2017, she was with him in Milan during the “Ricordi?” photographic event.

Portraits were taken on the spot for an exhibition that came together with each shot, filling the walls of the exhibition space with people’s faces.

Her name is listed next to those of such great professionals and well-known names as Toscani, Gastel, Thorimbert, and Benedusi. In January 2018, again in Milan and once again for the “Ricordi” project, she shot her portraits at the MIA Photo Fair, international photography fair.

Mariangela loves Milan a lot yet she remains deeply attached to the hometown that first appreciated her work as a photographer.

Additionally, she has been asked on several occasions to exhibit her works in important and prestigious places like Palazzo Fabroni.

For this project the intention was to reduce the contents to facilitate the identification of the viewer, “only” the soft part, dealing firstly with the topic of purity. However, the themes are numerous and difficult, real and day after day: indifference, pain, deception but also life and rebirth.

Mariangela says, “A self-portrait is the instrument I’ve chosen to devote myself to, only because of the images. It’s just like a musician does who knows the notes and has a melody in mind, finds a harmony in improvisation where the existing with the unrepeatable are mixed.”

— In reading the photographs that came out, it is very difficult to identify a before and an after, and understand if the reason generated the photo or if the photo wanted to tell her something about the reason, with the “inside and outside” generating an overabundance in which to abandon oneself.

uando arte e cultura chiamano, la città di Pistoia risponde presente ed ecco, quindi, che la Cattedrale di San Zeno gremita in ogni ordine di posti, ha ospitato, sabato 1° dicembre 2018, la presentazione del nuovo e atteso volume “L’Altare argenteo di San Iacopo a Pistoia”, un libro che ripercorrendo la storia di un’importante opera d’arte orafa realizzata fra Medioevo e Rinascimento, vuole essere un ponte ideale tra Pistoia e Santiago de Compostela, due città legate alla figura dell’apostolo Giacomo di Zebedeo, ovvero San Iacopo, e unite da un unico cammino.

Vero fiore all’occhiello di questo evento dedicato all’Altare Argenteo di San Iacopo, capolavoro di oreficeria a cui hanno lavorato 5 generazioni di orafi, dal ‘300 a Brunelleschi e importantissimo nel Cammino dei pellegrini verso Santiago di Compostela, è stata la Lectio Magistralis tenuta dal Professor Antonio Paolucci - già Ministro per i beni culturali e ambientali, Soprintendente per il Polo Museale Fiorentino e Direttore dei Musei Vaticani – che ha letteralmente incantato il numeroso pubblico presente a questo evento.

Continuing in the successful wake of Pistoia Italian Capital of Culture 2017, initiatives and publications like this have been able to increase the attention paid by the public at large to our city, now considered a fullfledged part of the international art and cultural tourist circuit. hen art and culture call, the city of Pistoia answers. Thus it was that all the seats in the Cathedral of San Zeno were packed on Saturday, 1 December 2018, for the presentation of the new and eagerly awaited volume on “The Silver Altar of St. James in Pistoia”. The book retraces the history of this important work of goldsmithery, created between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Moreover, it has served as the ideal bridge between Pistoia and Santiago de Compostela, two cities linked to the figure of the apostle James, son of Zebedee, or St James, and united by a single way.

This event’s crown jewel was the lecture given by Professor Antonio Paolucci, former Minister for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, Superintendent for the Florentine Museum Center, and Director of the Vatican Museums. He literally enchanted the large audience attending this event dedicated to the silver altar of St. James, a masterpiece of goldsmithery on which five generations of goldsmiths worked, from the 1300 to Brunelleschi in addition to being a very important stop on the pilgrims’ way to Santiago di Compostela.

L’associazione nasce nel 2015, su iniziativa di Gianni Bandinelli (artista, collezionista, e co-ideatore del Bosco d’Arte Contemporanea con il suo ex-maestro Marcello Guasti) e Duccio Mannucci (giornalista, organizzatore culturale e divulgatore scientifico), con l’intento, in primis: di promuovere lo sviluppo ecosostenibile dei territori in cui opera; realizzare progetti volti al superamento del disagio psicofisico di bambini, adolescenti e adulti, e all’integrazione dei portatori di handicap e sviluppare iniziative volte alla crescita della cittadinanza attiva. ArteTerapia: Therapeutic and Rehabilitative Techniques for the Treatment of Physical Psychological and Social Distress

n the heart of Chianti, in a wood where contemporary art installations interact with nature, the Associazione Culturale di Promozione Sociale Toscana (ACPST) has its headquarters. The association was founded in 2015, at the initiative of Gianni Bandinelli (artist, collector, and co-creator, with his former teacher Marcello Guasti, of the Bosco d’Arte Contemporanea (Contemporary Art Wood)) and Duccio Mannucci ( journalist, cultural organizer, and scientific communicator). Its primary intent is to promote eco-sustainable development in the districts where it operates; carry out projects aimed at overcoming the psycho-physical distress of children, adolescents, and adults and at integrating differently-abled people; and develop initiatives to increase active citizenship. With particular reference to the psycho-physical distress of children, “Natura Dentro” (Inside Nature) emerged from a meeting in 2016 with Arianna Papini, internationally famous artist and art therapist, and the Carthusia publishing house, which has carried out initiatives for children, young people, teachers, and parents for more than thirty years. Published

by Carthusia, this editorial project was conceived and designed with the author and illustrator Arianna Papini, as part of the Storie al quadrato series (Edizioni Carthusia) available in bookshops. From the start, Natura Dentro was not just a publishing initiative, but an integral part of a much more sophisticated project.

Entitled “ArteTerapia: Therapeutic and Rehabilitative Techniques for

the Treatment of Psychological and Social Physical Distress”, it has been promoted and carried out by ACPST in collaboration with Carthusia. Starting from the premise that art therapy uses each individual’s potentialities to creatively develop all the feelings that cannot be drawn out with words in order to reach a psycho-physical well-being, the project included therapy workshops held by Arianna Papini at primary schools where each participant was given a free copy of the book and visited symbolic places in the districts involved, starting at the ACPST’s Contemporary Art Wood in Greve in Chianti, plus presentations in public libraries and cultural centers for parents, teachers, social workers and, more generally, for all townspeople. In 2017, the project was carried out in the Metropolitan Cities of Milan and Florence, under the patronage of the Tuscan Region, the Metropolitan City of Florence, the Municipality of Greve in Chianti, the Accademia dei Georgofili, and FILE Italian Palliative Care Foundation as well as thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione Cariplo, the Fondazione Cr Firenze, the Metropolitan City of Florence, and the support of Anallergo SpA and ChiantiBanca (the latter as a sponsor). The project was successful, garnering media attention beyond all expectations. As a result of the renewed confidence of the Fondazione Cr Firenze and Anallergo SpA, which supported the project with new contributions, and the non-profit Fondazione Giorgio Tesi’s invaluable assistance, the project was organized for second time in 2018

in the City and Province of Arezzo.

It ended on 20 November 2018, with a public presentation at the Cortona Public Library – Etruscan Academy.

Presided by Tania Salvi, Deputy Mayor and Education Councilor for the Municipality of Cortona, the presentation reviewed the project’s results from the two sessions of the art therapy workshops in which over 1,300 children participated. Each child was given a free copy of the special edition of “Natura Dentro” created by ACPST. It included a brochure for adults, edited by Arianna Papini, directed specifically at parents, teachers, educators, and social workers, which explained the project, how to use the tool-book, and provided further information and insights. Given the success of these first two project sessions, it is expected to be extended to other districts as well, perhaps organizing a third session in the City and Province of Pistoia. Un nuovo Sistema Museale per Pistoia —

U

n progetto importante e impegnativo, che anche tenuto conto degli effetti positivi registrati dall’elezione nel 2017 a Capitale Italiana della Cultura, si pone l’obiettivo di offrire alla città, ai suoi abitanti e ai visitatori, un programma di iniziative culturali e artistiche articolato e attrattivo, affinché Pistoia si affermi sempre di più come meta prediletta dal turismo culturale e possa valorizzare e promuovere il suo patrimonio.

“Il nostro ente – ha dichiarato Luca Iozzelli, Presidente della Fondazione Caript e Direttore Generale di Fondazione Pistoia Musei – considera la cultura un faro nella rotta per lo sviluppo del territorio e ha in programma di investire importanti risorse in questo nuovo progetto, andando ad accrescere il suo impegno in

un settore che la vede già protagonista in città, in particolar modo sul fronte musicale, con importanti rassegne di musica da camera, sinfonica e jazz, oltre all’annuale festival di antropologia del contemporaneo Pistoia – Dialoghi sull’uomo”.

— La volontà di costituire un sistema museale si è andata consolidando attorno all’acquisizione dell’Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, operazione che la Fondazione Caript sta attualmente finalizzando con Intesa Sanpaolo e che prevede la gestione in comodato delle collezioni del Gruppo, nell’ambito del Progetto Cultura della Banca che contempla, tra i principali obiettivi, la valorizzazione e la condivisione con il pubblico del patrimonio artistico di proprietà.

Il museo, gestito a fronte di convenzioni con soggetti pubblici e privati, è infatti un singolarissimo edificio e un prezioso contenitore in cui si collocano diversi nuclei museali distinti, con un percorso archeologico attrezzato, il Museo della cattedrale di San Zeno, il meraviglioso Arazzo ‘millefiori’, la collezione Bigongiari dedicata al Seicento fiorentino, e le pitture murali di Giovanni Boldini appartenenti alla collezione della Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e della Lucchesia, Gruppo Intesa Sanpaolo.

prevista per la prossima primavera, si presenta come un piccolo e prezioso museo che racconta il cuore antico di Pistoia attraverso varietà di linguaggi, interazione digitale, e nuove scoperte tra cui, la più straordinaria, quella di un affresco incompleto, Il Compianto sul Cristo morto, databile alla fine del Duecento e attribuito alla cerchia di Lippo di Benivieni.

— Poco distante dalla chiesa di Sant’Andrea, in cui è conservato lo straordinario pulpito di Giovanni Pisano, e da Palazzo Fabroni, Museo del Novecento e del Contemporaneo – si trova Palazzo de’ Rossi: edificio settecentesco sede della Fondazione Caript, il palazzo conserva una collezione di opere d’arte nata nel 1992 con l’acquisizione di un insieme di disegni e dipinti del pittore e scultore Corrado Zanzotto (Pieve di Soligo, 1903 – Pistoia, 1980). Nel corso degli anni la raccolta è cresciuta, diventando rappresentativa delle espressioni artistiche che si sono sviluppate a Pistoia nel corso dei secoli. Con la nascita di Fondazione Pistoia Musei, Palazzo de’ Rossi diventa uno dei vertici del nuovo sistema museale connotandosi come centro dedicato all’arte del Novecento pistoiese, con un rinnovato percorso espositivo arricchito delle opere in comodato dalla collezione della Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e della Lucchesia.

dalla Fondazione Caript che dal 2019 diventerà sede di mostre di ampio respiro, con una particolare attenzione all’arte moderna e contemporanea. Ad inaugurare la nuova programmazione espositiva sarà Italia Moderna 1945 – 1975. Dalla Ricostruzione alla Contestazione a cura di Marco Meneguzzo: la rassegna attualmente in via di definizione – con un progetto di mostra da aprile a novembre 2019 con centoquaranta opere, tutte selezionate dalle collezioni di Intesa Sanpaolo – punterà a mostrare il complesso tessuto artistico italiano in uno dei periodi di trasformazione del Paese tra i più fecondi A seguire, da dicembre 2019 a marzo 2020, Memorie di Leonardo.

Due secoli di celebrazioni, anniversari e ‘capricci’ a cura di Antonio Natali, Andrea Baldinotti e Tommaso Mozzati: concepita per chiudere idealmente le manifestazioni del quinto centenario della morte di Leonardo da Vinci, l’esposizione proporrà un’articolata rivisitazione della lunga e nobile storia delle mostre leonardesche fra Otto e Novecento, ponendo sotto i riflettori alcuni momenti nevralgici della fortuna del mito dell’artista. ☜

A New Museum System for Pistoia

Four different locations in the heart of the historical center make up the new museum system Fondazione Pistoia Musei, promoted by the Fondazione Caript, telling about the city from its origins to artistic events in the 20th century, with a wide-ranging exhibition program and special attention to modern and contemporary art.

T

his important and demanding project has also taken into account the positive effects of the city’s election as the Italian Capital of Culture in 2017. It intends to offer the city, its inhabitants, and visitors an attractive, comprehensive program of cultural and artistic initiatives, with the intention that Pistoia becomes increasingly established as a favorite destination for cultural tourism, thereby capitalizing on and promoting its heritage.

Luca Iozzelli, president of the Fondazione Caript and general manager of the Fondazione Pistoia Musei stated, “Our institution considers culture a beacon on the road towards the development of our local area and plans to invest significant resources in this new project, increasing its commitment in a sector that has already our city as a showpiece, especially on the musical front, with notable chamber music, symphony and jazz festivals in addition to the annual anthropology festival of contemporary Pistoia - Dialogues on Man”.

— The aspiration to establish a museum system was consolidated by the acquisition of the Ancient Bishops’

Palace. The deal is currently being finalized with Intesa Sanpaolo by the Fondazione Caript, which will manage the free loan of the group’s collections as part of the bank’s culture plan. The main objectives will include promoting and sharing its artistic heritage assets with the public. Managed through agreements with public and private parties, the museum is indeed a quite remarkable building. In addition, it is an important repository for the diverse museums located therein, offering a splendid archaeological tour, the Museum of the Cathedral of San Zeno, the wonderful mille-fleurs tapestry, the Bigongiari collection dedicated to the Florentine seicento, and the Giovanni Boldini murals that are part of the collection of the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e della Lucchesia, Gruppo Intesa Sanpaolo.

A few steps away, almost overlooking Piazza Duomo, is the San Salvatore exhibition site, located in the former church documented since 979. Its decline recently came to an end with the restoration carried out and financed by the Fondazione Caript. San Salvatore, whose inauguration is scheduled for next spring, is a small, priceless museum that chronicles Pistoia’s ancient center through a variety of languages, digital interaction, and new discoveries. The most extraordinary of the latter is the incomplete fresco of The Lamentation over the Dead Christ, datable to the end of the 13th century and attributed to the circle of Lippo di Benivieni.

— Not far from the Church of Sant’Andrea, with Giovanni Pisano’s extraordinary pulpit, or from Palazzo Fabroni, Museum of the Twentieth Century and the Contemporary is the 18th-century Palazzo de’ Rossi, the Fondazione Caript’s headquarters. The building houses a collection of art works initiated in 1992 with the acquisition of a set of drawings and paintings by the painter/sculptor Corrado Zanzotto (Pieve di Soligo, 1903 - Pistoia, 1980).

Over the years, the collection has grown, becoming representative of the artistic expressions developed in Pistoia over the centuries. With the foundation of the Fondazione Pistoia Musei, Palazzo de’ Rossi becomes a high point of the new museum system, establishing itself as a center dedicated to Pistoia’s 20th-century

art, with refurbished exhibition spaces for works on loan from the collection of the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e della Lucchesia Opposite is Palazzo Buontalenti, an interesting example of late 16th-century Florentine architecture, which has hosted temporary exhibitions promoted by the Fondazione Caript since 2013. Beginning in 2019, it will become the venue for extensive exhibitions, with particular attention to modern and contemporary art. The new exhibition program will open with Modern Italy 1945 - 1975.

From Reconstruction to Protest, curated by Marco Meneguzzo. Currently in the process of being finalized, the exhibition’s planned run will be from April to November 2019 and will include 140 works selected from the Intesa

Sanpaolo collections. The show intends to show off Italy’s complex artistic fabric during one of the country’s most fruitful transformative periods.

Next up, from December 2019 to March 2020, will be Memoirs of Leonardo.

Two centuries of celebrations, anniversaries, and “whims”, curated

by Antonio Natali, Andrea Baldinotti, and Tommaso Mozzati. Conceived as the ideal way to close events surrounding the fifth centenary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the exhibition will offer a comprehensive review of the long and distinguished history of Leonardesque exhibitions between the 19th and 20th centuries, putting the spotlight on some key moments in the artist’s legendary success. ☜

La rassegna intende mostrare il complesso tessuto artistico italiano in uno dei periodi di trasformazione del Paese tra i più fecondi. La “Ricostruzione” e la “Contestazione” non sono infatti soltanto due poli cronologici entro cui si dipana l’idea della Modernità, declinata alla maniera italiana, ma sono due indicazioni culturali, mostrano già un arco di sviluppo di idee e di costumi che hanno portato l’Italia alla ribalta internazionale, sia come economia che come cultura, senza tuttavia abbandonare le esperienze migliori del passato, e nonostante le cicatrici lasciate dalla presenza molto ingombrante del regime fascista.

Per questo le intenzioni storicocritiche sono quelle di evidenziare il clima, l’atmosfera, il tessuto, più ancora dell’esposizione di una serie di capisaldi dell’arte italiana tra il ’45 e gli anni ’70. Suddivisa in sette sezioni che non seguono solo l’andamento tradizionale ma preferiscono evocare contesti in cui magari si incontravano anche tendenze diverse, la mostra accompagnerà lo spettatore attraverso i trent’anni di storia e storia dell’arte italiana più incisivi sul piano della costruzione di un’identità nazionale e internazionale finalmente “moderne”.

Ma la novità espositiva della mostra sta anche nella formula adottata per l’allestimento, che mira ad essere esaustiva e al contempo a “fidelizzare” il visitatore. Se infatti l’intenzione curatoriale è quella di mostrare il “contesto” dell’arte italiana, era necessario prevedere un ingente numero di lavori da esporre, e gli spazi di Palazzo Sozzifanti non sono sufficientemente ampi per accogliere le circa centoquaranta opere selezionate … d’altro canto una scelta numericamente inferiore non sarebbe stata sufficiente a mostrare il contesto ricco e variegato dell’arte

italiana, privilegiando soltanto i “soliti noti”. Si è scelto allora di raccogliere due mostre sotto lo stesso titolo, e di offrire al pubblico toscano e dei turisti una sorta di doppia esposizione, in una specie di “format” espositivo completamente nuovo. Nella prima parte – da aprile ad agosto – si potranno ammirare le opere dal 1945 al 1960, nella seconda i lavori tra il 1960 e il 1975. La “Modernità” potrà così essere guardata e interpretata anche nei suoi mutamenti radicali, e osservata in un numero consistente di opere: la prima parte, infatti comprenderà opere in fondo tradizionali, per quanto innovative nel linguaggio, mentre la seconda quasi ostenterà il distacco anche dei materiali e dei concetti dalla prima, avendo come fulcro cronologico essenziale il 1960.

The exhibition will show Italy’s complex artistic fabric during one of the country’s most fruitful periods of transformation. “Reconstruction” and “Protest” are not simply two chronological points of convergence within which the idea of Italian-style Modernity unfolds. these two cultural indications already demonstrated the sweeping development of ideas and customs that brought Italy to international prominence, both economically and culturally, yet without abandoning the best lessons of the past and despite the scars left by the especially burdensome presence of the fascist regime.

For this reason, the historical-critical purposes are to highlight the mood, atmosphere, and fabric, more than an exhibition of a series of pillars of Italian art between 1945 and the 1970s.

The seven sections not only follow the traditional progression but also call to mind situations in which perhaps also different trends were encountered. The exhibition will accompany the viewer through the most incisive thirty years

of Italian history as well as its history of art in terms of building a national and international identity that is finally “modern”.

However, this exhibition’s novelty is also found in the formula adopted for its organization, in an attempt to be exhaustive while simultaneously to developing visitor “loyalty”. If the curatorial intention is indeed to show the “context” of Italian art, it was necessary to provide a large number of works for the exhibition, and the spaces in Palazzo Sozzifanti were not large enough to accommodate the approximately one hundred and forty works selected. On the other hand, a smaller selection would not have been enough to show the rich and varied context of Italian art, favoring only the “usual suspects”. It was then decided to put together two exhibitions under the same title, offering the Tuscan public and tourists a sort of double exhibition, in a kind of completely new display “format”.

The first part - from April to August – will present works from 1945 to 1960 and the second with works from between 1960 and 1975. radical changes in “modernity” can thus also be observed and interpreted in a substantial number of works. As a matter of fact, the first part will include traditional works, yet with innovative imagery; the second will virtually flaunt the materials and concepts that separate them from the first part, with 1960 as the key chronological linchpin.

MORK CHIAMA MINDY Una complessa storia d’amore

Mork chiama Mindy… ma Mindy non risponde. Inizia così l’avventura dei Binturong, chiamati anche Orsi gatto, al Giardino Zoologico di Pistoia.

Ed è normale che sia così perché si tratta di una specie solitaria che passa gran parte del tempo sulla cima degli alberi della foresta del Sud est asiatico dove si sposta da un ramo all’altro grazie ad una poderosa coda prensile. I Binturong spesso scendono a terra per spostarsi e amano un menù a base di tanta frutta e qualche boccone di carne, selezionato tra piccoli roditori, uccelli e pesci.

Cina, Indocina, Indonesia e Filippine sono i Paesi che custodiscono gli Orsi gatto ma la deforestazione, la caccia per la pelliccia e per la carne e la cattura per essere venduti come animali da compagnia stanno determinando la quasi scomparsa di questa meravigliosa specie, importantissima per la foresta poiché disperde i semi della frutta di cui si nutre e aiuta così il rinnovo delle piante.

Mork e Mindy sono arrivati a Pistoia grazie al Progetto Europeo per le Specie in via d’Estinzione coordinato dall’E.A.Z.A., l’Associazione Europea degli Zoo e degli Acquari: lui ha 18 mesi e proviene dal Giardino Zoologico di Berlino, lei ha compiuto 1 anno il 1 gennaio ed è nata allo

Zoo di Olomouc in Repubblica Ceca e si sono appena conosciuti.

Il compito dello staff al GZP è essere per loro dei veri e propri “cupido” creando tutte le condizioni ideali perché si piacciano e si innamorino.

Tra i due è sicuramente Mork quello più semplice da coinvolgere: sin dai primi giorni si è lasciato avvicinare e ha imparato a fidarsi dei keeper del parco.

Mindy invece è ferma nel suo ruolo di femmina dominante…anche nella foresta funziona così: sono le femmine che comandano e che danno il ritmo alle riproduzioni, addirittura scegliendo il momento per far sviluppare il piccolo dentro di sé. Dopo l’accoppiamento la femmina può tenere ferma la crescita della nuova vita finché le condizioni ambientali non siano ideali per la nascita.

Ogni giorno Mork fa grandi progressi e qualche mattina fa, preso da coraggio, si è affacciato nell’area di Mindy, ricevendo in cambio una “rospata”: sbuffi e pelo dritto hanno fatto intendere chiaramente che per ora non è incline a dare confidenza.

Tutti speriamo che l’aria di primavera aiuterà l’inesperta coppia a fare i primi passi per una una vita insieme.

In attesa che l’amore sbocci, Mork e Mindy vivono in un’area del Parco riservata e lontano dalla vista del pubblico…un po’

di privacy è importante in questa fase delicata del loro incontro. A fine marzo sarà possibile conoscerli e annusare la scia della loro presenza, un odore simile a quello dei pop-corn appena cotti. Com’è possibile? Tutta una questione di chimica, quella che produce la stessa molecola sia quando il pop-corn si apre nella padella calda, sia quando l’urina del Binturong tocca il suo pelo e un batterio la trasforma in un profumo che per noi è simile a quello del mais cotto, ma per il naso di un’orso gatto è una fragranza fra le più delicate e… afrodisiaca.

La prossima volta che andrete al cinema l’odore dei pop-corn forse vi ricorderà la storia di Mork e Mindy!

MORK CALLING MINDY A complicated love story

The GZP staff’s task is to be a veritable “cupid” for the two animals, creating all the ideal conditions for them to like each other and fall in love.

Mork is definitely the easier one to engage.

From the beginning, he has let the park’s keepers approach him and has learned to trust them.

Mindy, however, is firm in her role as dominant female because it works like this also in the forest. The females are in command and time their reproduction, even choosing when to let the litter develop inside of her. After mating, the female can control the growth of new life until environmental conditions are ideal for birth.

Every day Mork is making great progress. A few mornings ago, having gotten his courage up, he looked into Mindy’s area. In return, she snubbed him with snorts and her fur on end, clearly indicating that for now she is not inclined to become too familiar.

We all hope that spring fever will help the inexperienced couple take their first steps towards a life together.

While waiting for love to blossom, Mork and Mindy live in a restricted area of the park away from the public eye. After all, a little privacy is important in this delicate phase of their acquaintance. At the end of March, it will be possible for them to get to know each other and sniff the scent of their presence, a smell similar to that of freshly popped popcorn. How can that be? It is all a question of chemistry, with the same molecule being produced both when the popcorn opens in a hot pan as well as when the binturong’s fur is touched by its urine, at which time a bacterium turns it into a perfume that, for us, is similar to popped popcorn, but to a bearcat’s nose is among the most delicate and... aphrodisiacal of fragrances.

So, the next time you go to the cinema, perhaps the popcorn smell will remind you of Mork and Mindy’s relationship!

Mork is calling Mindy...but Mindy is not answering. Thus begins the adventure of the binturong, also known as bearcats, at the Zoological Garden of Pistoia.

Besides, this is normal, as it is a solitary species that spends most of its time in the treetops of the Southeast Asian forests where it moves from branch to branch thanks to its powerful prehensile tail. Binturongs often go down to the ground to move about and love a menu based on lots of fruit plus a few bites of meat from a selection of small rodents, birds, and fish.

China, Indochina, Indonesia, and the Philippines are the countries that are home to the bearcats. However, deforestation, hunting for fur and meat, and being captured to be sold as pets are driving the near disappearance of this wonderful species, which is very important for the forest as it disperses the seeds of the fruit on which it feeds, thus helping plant regeneration.

Mork and Mindy arrived in Pistoia through the European Project for Endangered Species coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA). Mork is 18 months old and comes from the Berlin Zoological Garden. Mindy just had her first birthday on 1 January; she was born at the

er raccontare questa tipica attività pistoiese, non potevamo che rivolgerci a chi l’ha ideata e quindi, in una freddissima mattina di Gennaio eccoci nella storica Azienda Agricola Carradori Giuseppe Nedo, oggi gestita da Luisa e suo marito Alessandro, che da tre generazioni continua a produrre e commercializzare rape, spinaci, cicoria, cavolo nero e bietola già cotte.

Era l’anno 1956 quando la lungimirante “Nonna Maria” iniziò a cuocere le verdure a foglia verde, soprattutto le rape - prodotto consumato tipicamente nel pistoiese e dintorni - iniziando di fatto questo mestiere che passando dalle sue mani a quelle del figlio Nedo è oggi arrivato in quelle di sua nipote Luisa.

represents one of Pistoia’s excellences.

— La verdura lessata, veniva “strizzata” e tagliata al coltello e poi assemblata in piccole palline di circa 40 gr l’una che venivano sistemate in cassette di legno con carta per alimenti e quindi portate a vendere nelle botteghe. Sono

passati più di 60 anni ed oggi, questa storia continua ripetendosi ogni giorno nella moderna e funzionale azienda gestita da Luisa insieme al marito Alessandro: il paiolo è diventato una capiente caldaia, il coltello è stato sostituito da un grande cutter, per togliere l’acqua viene utilizzata una centrifuga e le palline, ancora fatte rigorosamente a mano, su iniziativa proprio di Luisa, hanno un peso di circa 250 gr.

____ Nel rispetto della tradizione la cottura della verdura avviene ancora in una caldaia tradizionale, senza l’aggiunta di nessun tipo di conservante. ____ In keeping with tradition, the greens are still cooked in a cauldron, without adding any preservatives.

— A questo punto, rigorosamente a mano, vengono realizzate le “palle” e il prodotto viene pesato e confezionato, pronto per partire, la sera stessa della lavorazione, per la distribuzione. Una filiera breve che in 24 ore trasforma e rende disponibili le verdure cotte per la consumazione.

“Rispetto a quando mia nonna, circa 60 anni fa ha iniziato l’attività – afferma Luisa Carradori – molte cose sono cambiate, ma noi abbiamo cercato comunque di conservare la tradizione, a partire dalla cottura della verdura in una grande caldaia tradizionale, senza l’aggiunta di nessun tipo di conservante. Per adeguarsi alle richieste del mercato, su mia iniziativa abbiamo cambiato il peso delle palline di verdura, che mia nonna e mio padre realizzavano molto piccole, portandolo a circa 250 grammi, adeguandosi così alle esigenze del mercato odierno. Ci tengo a dire che consumare verdure cotte che contengono fibre è un toccasana per il nostro organismo.

I risultati e i benefici dovuti loro impiego sono molteplici: oltre a svolgere un’importante azione lassativa favorendo la regolarità intestinale, l’utilizzo delle verdure cotte contribuisce a normalizzare anche i livelli di colesterolo e di

zuccheri nel sangue. La verdura cotta aiuta a conservare un corpo in salute e a mantenere il peso forma”.

— Naturalmente tutto si evolve e oggi, seguendo le esigenze di un mercato sempre più competitivo ed adeguandosi alle continue modifiche igienico-sanitarie, forti dell’esperienza acquisita in più di 60 anni di attività, l’azienda ha apportato un costante miglioramento qualitativo del prodotto in modo da offrire ai consumatori la certezza di consumare un prodotto di alta qualità che parte dalla materia prima, sempre freschissima, e garantito da una filiera di lavorazione e trasformazione che rispetta alla lettera rigidi standard qualitativi, senza mai dimenticare, naturalmente, tutti i segreti e i preziosi consigli di Nonna Maria… ☜

One of our district’s distinctions is represented by the transformation of green leafy vegetables, going from planting to harvesting, followed by processing and delivery to the retailer of the cooked, packaged product ready for the consumer.

o tell about this typical business in Pistoia, we could only turn to those who conceived it. Thus, on a very cold January morning, we are here at the well-known Giuseppe Nedo Carradori Farm, now run by Luisa and her husband Alessandro. For three generations, they have continued to produce and market already cooked turnip greens, spinach, chicory, black cabbage, and chard. In 1956, the far-sighted Grandma Maria (Nonna Maria) began to cook the green leafy vegetables, especially the turnip greens, which were eaten in typically the Pistoia area and its environs. In fact, she started this business that was handed over to her son Nedo and today is in the hands of her granddaughter Luisa.

My grandmother and my father made them very small, by increasing them to about 250 grams, thus adapting to the needs of today’s market. I have to say that eating cooked greens that contain fiber is a cureall for our bodies. There are numerous results and benefits related to their use. In addition to having an important laxative action that promotes intestinal regularity, the use of cooked greens also helps to normalize cholesterol and blood sugar levels. el punto più alto sul livello del mare, nel cuore del centro storico di Pistoia, imperniata nel groviglio delle strette strade cittadine, sorge la chiesa di San Biagino. Dall’esterno l’edificio romanico appare come un vero e proprio scrigno che custodisce la memoria storica ed artistica del Medioevo pistoiese.

La chiesa viene citata per la prima volta nella bolla di Anastasio IV del 1153: essa sorgeva nel borgo che portava il nome di un certo Guitterardo ed era originariamente intitolata a Santa Maria. Nel 1063 lui e la moglie, Imilia, entrambi di origine longobarda, avrebbero donato alla canonica di San Zeno la piccola chiesa ed una serie di abitazioni poste lungo la strada principale del borgo, l’attuale via del Fiasco, tra via Abbi Pazienza e via delle Pappe, poi noto come Borgo Strada. Vicino alla chiesa era la Porta Putida di Pistoia, che consentiva ai pellegrini di passaggio di accedere più agevolmente alla chiesa entrando dall’ingresso nord della città, lungo via de’ Rossi.

Nel XVI secolo si decise di dedicare questo luogo al culto di San Biagio, di cui conservava come reliquia la falange di un suo dito: la chiesetta venne così rinominata dai Pistoiesi semplicemente come “San Biagino”.

Una visita apostolica alla fine del XVI secolo rivelò il pessimo stato della struttura e la presenza nella canonica di alambicchi, fornelli e strumenti farmaceutici vari usati dal rettore Forteguerri, che era stato un esperto speziale e aveva allestito un orto dei semplici nella corte della canonica.

Con l’avvento dell’Illuminismo, nel 1784 il vescovo di Pistoia, Scipione de’ Ricci, dispose la chiusura di

San Biagino al culto, sebbene il parroco abbia continuato indefesso per alcuni anni ad officiarvi la messa. Poco dopo, nel 1799, durante l’occupazione francese, la chiesa ospitò il comandante della piazza di Pistoia, che da qui si mosse alla testa di un corteo per piantare l’albero della libertà in piazza del Duomo.

La definitiva soppressione di San Biagino fu decisa con rescritto granducale del 22 giugno 1802: da allora la chiesa fu adattata a magazzino e deposito.

— Dal 2015 San Biagino ha aperto di nuovo le sue porte al pubblico grazie all’intervento di restauro curato da Massenzio Arte Artigiana e all’Associazione Athena Arte.

Ciò che colpisce maggiormente in San Biagino è, forse, l’unitarietà dello spazio della chiesa. La volumetria, infatti, si mostra compatta ed in se stessa conclusa: un bianco paramento in blocchi ben squadrati di alberese cinge il perimetro rettangolare della chiesa sulla piazzetta San Biagio, che fu teatro per decenni dei sanguinosi scontri fra le famiglie dei Vergiolesi

da un lato e dei Ravenni dall’altro.

La facciata principale reca, come solo ornamento, il portale trilitico in pietra serena, impreziosito dall’archetto zebrato, scandito da conci ora in marmo di Carrara, ora in serpentino verde di Prato ed ingentilito da una cornice arcuata con rosette in rilievo. Quest’unica licenza alla semplicità del romanico ne caratterizza l’identità pistoiese, quasi un richiamo al genius loci, ed incorona l’ingresso primario senza concedergli troppi fronzoli, lasciando appena spazio ad un piccolo affresco oggi perduto. Nella parte sommitale della facciata, il largo sbrano ricucito con una fitta trama di mattoni rossi, là dove oggi si apre un finestrone rettangolare, è la conseguenza di un antico intervento di restauro, seguito al rovinoso incendio del 1340 che distrusse parzialmente l’edificio.

Più elegante e generoso in fatto di decorazione è invece l’accesso situato sul prospetto laterale. Il candido trilite marmoreo intagliato dichiara sull’architrave: MORONES SERVUS S. MARIE FEC. IMPL. HOC OP, ricordando come il suo committente, tal Morone,

penetriamo all’interno dello spazio culturale.

Qui è di nuovo un volume unitario ad accogliere lo sguardo: l’impianto planimetrico romanico si fonde con l’alzato nel segno della navata unica, così come in effetti conviene ad una chiesa dalle dimensioni modeste.

— Proprio gli interni hanno conosciuto, nei secoli, maggiore fortuna decorativa. A partire dal

XV secolo, quando, in virtù della reliquia di san Biagio che lì si volle conservare, la chiesa fu intitolata al vescovo armeno e fino al XVI secolo, le pareti, incluse quelle absidali, godettero di un ampio intervento di riqualificazione architettonica e pittorica, in linea col nuovo gusto.

Rimangono ancora oggi gli altari in pietra serena e gli affreschi baroccheggianti, realizzati poco prima che l’edificio cadesse in rovina.

In particolare, nel periodo in cui San Biagino si fregiò del patronato e del mecenatismo dei Manni, nel corso del Seicento, la chiesa venne arricchita con una pala d’altare raffigurante la sacra conversazione commissionata a Giuseppe Nicola Nasini per esaltare l’altare maggiore, oggi conservata presso la chiesa dello Spirito Santo. Quasi contemporaneamente un’Annunciazione fu realizzata per uno dei due altari laterali. Prima della sconsacrazione del 1802, al corredo iconografico di San Biagino venne infine aggiunta una Santa Lucia del Casanova, al cui culto, oltre che a quello di San Biagio, i parrocchiani avevano tributato particolare devozione. ☜

the highest point above sea level, in the heart of Pistoia’s historical center, centered in the tangle of the narrow city streets, stands the Church of San Biagino. From the outside, the Romanesque building looks like a true treasure chest that preserves the historical and artistic memory of Pistoia’s Middle Ages.

The church is mentioned for the first time in Anastasius IV’s 1153 bull. Rising in the village bearing the name of a certain Guitterardo, it was originally dedicated to St. Mary. In 1063, Guitterardo and his wife, Imilia, both Lombards, donated to the parish of St. Zeno the small church and a series of houses along the main street of the village, the current Via del Fiasco, between Via Abbi Pazienza and Via delle Pappe, later known as Borgo Strada.

Near the church was Pistoia’s Porta Putida, which let passing pilgrims enter the church more easily through the city’s north entrance, along Via de’ Rossi.

In the 16th century, it was decided to dedicate it to the cult of St. Blaise, the phalanx of whose finger was kept as a relic there. The church was rebaptized by the Pistoia’s townspeople simply as “San Biagino.” An apostolic visit at the end of the 16th century revealed the structure’s poor state and the presence in the rectory of alembics, stoves, and various pharmaceutical instruments used by the rector Forteguerri, an expert apothecary who had set up a simple kitchen garden in the rectory.

With the dawn of the Enlightenment, the bishop of Pistoia, Scipione de’ Ricci, ordered the closure of San Biagino to the cult in 1784 – even if the parish priest

continued indefatigably to officiate the mass for some years. Shortly thereafter, in 1799, during the French occupation, the church hosted the commander of Pistoia’s garrison, who moved from there to the head of a procession to plant the tree of liberty in Piazza del Duomo.

The decision to suppress San Biagino definitively was made with the grandducal rescript of 22 June 1802. Since that time, the church was adapted for use as a warehouse and storeroom.

— Since 2015, San Biagino has once again opened its doors to the public thanks to the restoration project managed by Massenzio Arte Artigiana and the Associazione Athena Arte.

What is perhaps most striking in San Biagino is the unity of the church’s space.

In fact, the volume is compact and closes in on itself. A white ornament in squared alberese limestone blocks surrounds the rectangular perimeter of the church on Piazzetta San Biagio, the scene for decades of bloody clashes between the Vergiolesi family on one hand and the Ravenni on the other.

The only ornament on the main façade has a trilithic portal in pietra serena, embellished by a zebra-striped arch, its ashlars alternating in Carrara marble and the green serpentine of Prato, and adorned by an arched frame with raised rosettes. This unique license of Romanesque simplicity typifies Pistoia’s identity, almost a reference to the genius loci. Moreover, it crowns the primary entrance without too many frills, leaving just enough room for a small fresco, now lost. In the upper part of the façade, a wide gash patched with a solid red brick structure is where a large rectangular window opens today, the consequence of an ancient restoration attempt following

The entrance located on the side elevation is more elegant and striking in terms of decoration. On the architrave of the carved white marble trilith appears MORONES SERVUS S. MARIE FEC. IMPL. HOC OP, which recalls how its buyer, a certain Morone, carried out the work of the church’s original founder, Guitterardo.

Two slim Corinthian columns in pietra serena delimit the portal and just above, support two lions placed on the right and left of the carved capitals. The listels placed on the back of the zoomorphic figures and the second round of acanthus leaves bear a double ring of arches, again striped and framed, like that on the main façade. It is because of these triumphant beasts – one holding a man in its claws and the other a wild animal – that we enter into the cultural space.

Here again, a unitary volume catches the eye. The Romanesque planimetric layout merges with the elevation indicating a single nave, as indeed suits a small-sized church. The space expands at the bottom of the nave in a semi-cylindrical apse placed behind the altar.

Beginning in the 15th century, when the church was named after the Armenian bishop, thanks to the relic of St. Blaise kept there, and until the 16th century, the walls, including those of the apse, had extensive architectural and pictorial refurbishment, in line with the new style. The pietra serena altarpieces and the baroque-style frescoes still remain, having been completed just before the building fell into ruin.

Particularly in the period in which San Biagino was decorated under the Manni family’s auspices through their patronage during the 17th century, the church was enriched with an altarpiece depicting the sacred conversation, commissioned to Giuseppe Nicola Nasini, to enhance the high altar, today found in the Church of the Spirito Santo. Almost at the same time, an Annunciation was carried out for one of the two side altars. Before its deconsecration in 1802, a Saint Lucy of Casanova was added to San Biagino’s iconographic collection, to whom, besides St. Blaise, the parishioners prayed with particular devotion. ☜

e strade si spopolano e il paesaggio è sempre più contrassegnato dalle saracinesche abbassate, generando un senso di desolazione che si trasforma spesso in percezione di insicurezza. La crisi ha colpito la rete del piccolo commercio ma si è ripercossa sulle diverse dimensioni che compongono la sfera urbana, a conferma della valenza non solo economica di queste attività.

Individuare una sola causa è difficile: di certo hanno influito le trasformazioni intervenute nell’assetto urbanistico e della mobilità, nell’offerta commerciale (i supermarket) come nelle abitudini di vita e di acquisto (commercio online).

C’è soluzione a questa crisi? È da questo interrogativo che nasce Pop Up, un progetto che fa leva sul riuso dell’ingente patrimonio privato di cui sono costellate le città per innescare processi di “rigenerazione” che sappiano ricostruire in forme nuove quelle condizioni che da sempre sono fattore di dinamismo, sviluppo e sicurezza sociale. L’idea è nata nel 2014, quando Sociolab - cooperativa attiva da oltre dieci anni in tutta Italia nella progettazione di percorsi di partecipazione è stata chiamata a progettare un’iniziativa di animazione degli

spazi sfitti di un Comune della provincia di Pisa. Da allora, grazie al sostegno della Regione Toscana, Pop Up è stato realizzato in 11 comuni toscani. Il progetto si configura come sperimentazione di politiche innovative in ambiti particolarmente delicati: dalla partecipazione alla sicurezza urbana.

Il cuore di Pop Up è la riapertura dei fondi commerciali sfitti: attraverso accordi con i proprietari, i fondi vengono ripristinati e messi a disposizione gratuitamente per alcuni mesi per l’insediamento di nuove attività di diversa natura (commerciale, culturale, sociale, ecc) selezionate attraverso una call for ideas. A partire dall’evento di lancio si prevede non solo la riapertura dei fondi messi a disposizione, ma anche lo svolgimento di attività di animazione dello spazio pubblico organizzate dalle stesse attività insediate e da altri soggetti coinvolti lungo la fase preparatoria. L’obiettivo è quello di attivare un processo di innovazione su più fronti: dal punto di vista delle politiche locali (e della loro governance) creando nuovi strumenti e procedure che favoriscano una rigenerazione urbana “integrata”; sotto il profilo commerciale promuovendo un nuovo modo di

fare commercio; e infine sul piano sociale e comunitario, riportando le persone ad animare le strade delle nostre città, contribuendo così a contrastare la percezione di insicurezza senza però innescare fenomeni di espulsione delle loro componenti più popolari (gentrification).

Mentre sono in corso le sperimentazioni di Montecatini, Grosseto e Rosignano, si può fare un bilancio delle precedenti esperienze: accanto ad una percentuale significativa di attività che decidono di insediarsi stabilmente dopo il periodo sperimentale (intorno al 40%), Pop Up ha favorito la nascita di fenomeni aggregativi tra attività e residenti; ha fatto da attrattore nei confronti di nuove attività, e ha permesso di codificare modalità e soluzioni normative (è il caso della recente legge regionale sul commercio, che richiama soluzioni sperimentate nelle edizioni precedenti di Pop Up) attraverso le quali favorire processi e politiche innovative per il rilancio delle città.

Da aprile a luglio sono state raccolte fotografie storiche del quartiere - dalla fine dell’800 agli anni ‘60 del secolo scorso - e sono stati intervistati e coinvolti una ventina di residenti del Sottoverga che hanno raccontato aneddoti divertenti e memorie del quartiere e ai quali è stata chiesta la loro visione attuale, quella futura, una riflessione sulle problematiche e sulle possibili soluzioni.

Uno dei temi conflittuali è la difficoltà di convivenza tra cittadini che provengono da paesi diversi in un quartiere che ha visto un radicale cambiamento della popolazione in pochissimi anni.

Il Comune di Montecatini Terme ha promosso il progetto, grazie al finanziamento della Regione Toscana, decidendo di concentrarsi su un quartiere storico della città che è separato dal centro cittadino dai binari del treno, le “verghe” appunto, e che negli ultimi anni ha subito un graduale svuotamento di negozi e una crescita del senso di insicurezza dei residenti.

For some time now, researchers, policy-makers, and citizens have asked themselves about tools for preventing the progressive reduction in functions and abandonment affecting many urban centers.

he streets are deserted. The landscape is increasingly marked by lowered shutters, generating a sense of desolation that often turns into a perception of not being safe. The crisis has hit the network of small businesses but has affected the various characteristics that make up the urban sphere, confirming more than just the economic value of these activities. Identifying a single cause is difficult. Clearly, changes have taken place in urban planning and mobility, the commercial offer (supermarkets), as well as in living and purchasing (online commerce) patterns.

Is there a solution to this crisis? It is from this question that Pop Up was created.

This project is based on the reuse of the huge private heritage with which cities are dotted to produce “regeneration” processes that can rejuvenate in new forms those conditions that have always been a factor of dynamism, development, and social safety. The idea began in 2014, when Sociolab – a cooperative active throughout Italy for more than ten years in the planning of ways of participation – was asked to design an initiative to revitalize vacant areas in a town in Pisa Province.

Since then, thanks to the support of the

Tuscan Region, Pop Up has spread to eleven Tuscan cities. The project has been organized to experiment with innovative policies in particularly difficult areas: from shareholding to urban safety.

The heart of Pop Up is the reopening of vacant commercial properties.

Through agreements with the owners, the properties are restored and made available free of charge for several months so that various types of new activities (commercial, cultural, social, etc.) selected through a call for ideas can become established. Starting from the launch event, not only are the reopened properties made available, but activities to invigorate the public space are also carried out, organized by the very same activities established there as well as by other players during the preparatory phase. The aim is to set an innovation process in motion on several fronts: from the point of view of local policies (and their governance) creating new tools and procedures that foster “integrated” urban regeneration; promoting a new way of doing business from a commercial point of view; and finally on the social and community level, bringing people to back into our cities’ streets, thus contributing to countering the perception of insecurity yet without triggering the eviction of their most grass-roots/working class

constituents (gentrification).

While the experiments in Montecatini, Grosseto, and Rosignano are under way, previous experiences can be evaluated.

Alongside a significant percentage of activities that have decided to become permanent after the experimental period (around 40%), Pop Up has promoted the organization of social events between the activities and residents; acted to attract new activities, and consented to the coding of methods and regulatory solutions (this applies to the recent regional law on trade, which refers to previous experimental solutions in earlier Pop Up programs) through which to promote innovative processes and policies for the revitalization of cities.

The Municipality of Montecatini Terme has promoted the project, thanks to funding from the Tuscan Region. One of the conflicting themes is the difficulty for inhabitants from diverse countries to coexist in a neighborhood whose population has change radically within very few years.

“The result was very satisfying as the enthusiasms and traits of a neighborhood wanting to be reborn revealed to us the conflicts, through a return of those attitudes that have always characterized it: unity, diversity, cooperation, its working-class character, and hospitality”, says Luca Privitera who worked on collecting the material.

In addition to the many initiatives organized in the neighborhood, since December on Via Marruota, seven stores were reopened that, in a short time, have managed to brighten and brought life to the street. ☜

ricordi più belli, di chi come me ha ampiamente passato le 50 primavere, vanno a quando da bambini aspettavamo che babbo natale oltre alle piste e alle macchinine ci portasse anche il regalo più bello e cioè la neve.

Purtroppo però, nei miei ricordi di bambino, ma anche di ragazzo, erano più le festività natalizie senza neve, rispetto a quelle in cui si poteva andare a sciare. Perché si, la neve era bella per fare le pallate, gli slittini o i pupazzi, ma la neve, anche da bambino serviva soprattutto per una cosa, per sciarci sopra. E come ho appena detto a Natale nel nostro Appennino é sempre stato ben difficile sciare, con la neve che iniziava a fare capolino spesso nel mese di gennaio senza contare gli anni in cui si faceva

vedere, purtroppo, addirittura a febbraio. Ci sono stati anni eccezionalmente nevosi certo, come il 69, il 79, l’85 o in tempi più recenti il 2009 e il 2018, ma ci sono stati purtroppo anche anni orribili, passati praticamente senza nevicate, come l’89 e il 90, anni in cui anche sulle nostre montagne iniziarono a fare capolino i primi impianti di innevamento artificiale.

Sempre facendo riferimento al comprensorio abetonese quindi, pensando ad un innevamento artificiale di un comprensorio tra Ovovia, Pulicchio e Val di Luce i costi si possono stimare tra i 4 e i 600.000 €. Tali costi sono composti da 3 elementi principali, costo dell’impianto, energia elettrica e personale necessario alla supervisione ed alla battitura delle piste. É abbastanza evidente che se da un lato i costi dell’energia e del personale sono dipendenti dal fatto di produrre o meno la neve, il costo di ammortamento dell’impianto — é presente anche negli anni in cui Molte stazioni sciistiche la neve cade copiosa dal cielo e oggi dipendono fortemente dalla quindi non é necessario produrre produzione di neve e quindi sono neve programmata. creando una serie di attività prima sconosciute a queste zone, che hanno permesso non solo la sopravvivenza dei vecchi residenti, ma addirittura in alcuni casi anche un incremento dovuto all’arrivo di nuovi lavoratori anche se nella maggior parte di casi soltanto stagionali. Attività come il maestro di sci, l’addetto agli impianti di risalita, l’operatore di battipista, solo per fare alcuni esempi, sono direttamente dipendenti dalla presenza di neve, ma é evidente che anche attività più tradizionali come l’albergatore o il negoziante di articoli sportivi sono legati alla presenza di turisti sul territorio.

Presenza di turisti che durante il periodo invernale é direttamente dipendente dalla copertura nevosa delle piste da sci. Come tale appare evidente la necessità di innevare le piste destinate allo sci alpino al fine di garantire

la sopravvivenza degli abitanti legati ai territori di alta montagna durante il periodo invernale. E quindi gli ingenti investimenti necessari alla costruzione ed alla gestione degli impianti di innevamento programmato devono essere considerati funzionali non soltanto come supporto all’attività delle aziende che gestiscono gli impianti di risalita, ma anche e soprattutto come vero e proprio motore in grado di muovere tutta l’attività di una comunità residente in zone di montagna. Questo è diventato ancor più importante nel corso degli ultimi anni, durante i quali la tecnologia ha permesso un forte miglioramento della qualità prodotta dai generatori di neve rendendo quasi migliore la sciabilità assicurata dalla neve programmata rispetto a quella naturale che se in alcuni momenti è chiaramente inimitabile ha

anche situazioni climatiche in cui diventa molto meno stabile e come tale meno piacevole per la pratica dello sci. Cosa che non è passata inosservata da parte degli appassionati tanto che il gap di presenze che esisteva al momento dell’installazione dei primi impianti di innevamento programmato tra giornate con neve naturale e giornate con neve programmata, inizialmente stimabile nel 50 % si sta velocemente riducendo fino ad essere quasi ininfluente in alcune stazioni alpine dotate di impianti particolarmente efficienti. Tutto ciò premesso speriamo che le nostre montagne possano in futuro ritrovare inverni degni di tale nome e che gli impianti di innevamento possano servire a rendere meglio fruibili le nostre stazioni ma non sia o i soli ad assicurarne la sopravvivenza. Artificial snowmaking The huge investments necessary for the construction and management of automatic snow-making systems are useful both as support to the business of the ski-lift management companies that as well as other winter sports-related industries, to be an engine for all of a mountain community’s activity.

he most beautiful memories of those who, like me, have largely surpassed 50 springs, are as children when, in addition to the racecourses and cars, we expected that Santa Claus would also bring us that most beautiful gift of all, snow. Unfortunately, my memories as a youngster recall there being more Christmas holidays without snow than there were for skiing. Yes, there was enough snow for snowballs and snowmen or even sledding. However, as a child, snow was primarily good for one thing: skiing. In addition, as I just said, it has always been difficult to ski at Christmas in our Apennines, with the snow often not appearing until January not to mention those years when it was unfortunately not seen until February.

There have been exceptionally snowy years, such as 1969, 1979, and 1985 or more recently in 2009 and 2018. Alas, there were also horrible years practically without snowfall, like 1989 and 1990. It was in those years that the first artificial snow machines began to turn up in our mountains. Initially imported from the United States where a farmer, irrigating his fields in winter, noticed that the water sprayed by the sprinklers turned to ice before falling on the ground. This gave him the brilliant idea that such a system could be of great help to ski resorts by ensuring reliable snow coverage throughout the winter season irrespective of the precipitation. However, it was Art Hunt, Dave Richey, and Wayne Pierce who transformed this inspiration into

what is now commonly called a snow cannon when they patented it in 1950. In 1952, Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel became the first in the world to use artificial snow. However, it was not until the early 1970s that artificial snow began to be widespread.

— Many ski resorts today are heavily dependent on snow production. Therefore, huge investments in research are directed at efforts to produce an artificial snow that is as similar as possible to natural snow, without having to wait for very low temperatures and above all with a favorable energy balance. In fact, if the quality of artificial snow has become absolutely comparable, or even better than natural snow, production costs are still extremely high, with the price to produce one cubic meter of snow varying between € 2.50 and € 3, depending on the outside temperature, humidity level, and type of system. For example a ski-run like Abetone’s Zeno 3, about 3 km long, and generally 40 meters wide, must be covered with about 30 cm of snow. As a result, it will take about 36,000 m3 of snow to properly cover it with snow.

Therefore, the total cost to make a similar slope skiable is around € 100,000. Again referring to the Abetone district, cost estimates for covering an area between Ovovia, Pulicchio, and Val di Luce using artificial snow can be between € 400,000-600.000. The three main factors in this number are the plant,

electricity, and personnel needed to supervise and groom the slopes. It is quite evident that if energy and personnel costs are dependent on whether snow is produced, the cost of plant depreciation is present even in years when abundant natural snow falls and consequently, no need to make snow. In other words, the cost component of snow production affects the ski-lift management companies’ balance sheets, even in the seasons with significant snowfall. This helps us understand how artificial snow has now become so deeply rooted in the mountain economy that it is impossible to be ignored at any tourist or social level, and, as broadly explained, particularly at an economic one.

— At this point, the last, but no less important aspect that remains to be evaluated is the ecological impact.

As such, it is clear that creating snow on the slopes used for alpine skiing is essential to guarantee the survival of inhabitants of the high mountain areas during the winter season. Therefore, substantial investments necessary for the construction and management of the snowmaking systems must be considered practical not only to support the lift management companies, but also and above all as a real engine capable of launching all the functions of a community living in the mountains. This has become even more important over the last few years as technology has led to a significant improvement in the quality of artificial snow produced by the snow generators that have made ski conditions almost better than with natural snow, which at some times is clearly incomparable, The climatic situation has

also become much less stable and thus less pleasant for skiing. What has not gone unnoticed by enthusiasts is that the gap between days with natural snow and days with artificial snow, which once existed before the first snowmaking systems, were installed. This roughly 50% gap has been rapidly reduced to be the point of having almost become irrelevant in some alpine resorts with particularly efficient installations. All this is premised, we hope, on our mountains having winters worthy of the name in the future and that snowmaking facilities will make our resorts more enjoyable but that they are not the only ones to ensure their survival.

it can be seen as a slow-release water reservoir that is perfectly compatible with environmental equilibrium. On the other hand, however, the required energy consumption is very high in addition to the noise produced by the cannons during snow production, thus disturbing the mountain’s wildlife. Nevertheless, the technology is taking important steps in both directions in order to produce quieter, more efficient systems.

It is very important to look at the economic and social consequences that the artificial snow production has on the mountain areas, which suffered a progressive impoverishment over the last century that led to a consequent depopulation. Winter tourism, exemplified especially by alpine skiing, has managed to reverse this trend in some areas by creating a series of activities previously unknown to these areas.

This has not only enabled long-standing residents to survive, but has also led in some cases to an increase due primarily to the arrival of new, seasonal workers. Jobs like ski instructor, ski lift operator, and snow groomer, to give a few examples,

pazio ZeroSei è un progetto selezionato dall’impresa sociale “Con i Bambini” nell’ambito del Fondo per il contrasto della povertà educativa minorile, e si articola in differenti realtà territoriali a livello nazionale come Lecce, Pistoia, Ventimiglia e Vibo Valentia (nota 1) che assumono come modello un progetto sperimentale - la Scatola delle Buone Idee - realizzato a Torino a partire dal 2014 dall’Impresa Sociale XKE’?, come azione del programma ZeroSei della Compagnia di San Paolo.

L’aspetto principale che unisce i diversi partner di questo progetto è legato all’offerta di uno spazio informale e flessibile dedicato alla costruzione di relazioni sociali fra bambini ed adulti. La realizzazione dello Spazio ZeroSei di Pistoia, inaugurato lo scorso 7 settembre, è stata possibile grazie anche ad una realtà cittadina che ha costruito nel tempo una sua identità sui servizi educativi per bambini e loro famiglie, in particolare sul tema degli ambienti educativi “che hanno in sé un significato specifico, capace di rimandare a valori educativi, sociali e culturali che sono divenuti segni di appartenenza propri della realtà pistoiese“ (Giovannini, 2018).

Spazio ZeroSei è dunque il risultato di un lungo confronto con questa realtà e di un percorso di ricerca che ha portato alla progettazione di un servizio innovativo, improntato ad un’offerta informale e attiva.

L’intenzione è stata quella di creare un ambiente dove lo stupore e l’immaginario potessero trovare

accoglienza, una casa capace di nutrire i sensi, le emozioni, l’immaginario di bambini e adulti.

La costruzione degli ambienti della Casa del Tempo prende vita da un percorso formativo, condotto da Patrizia Menichelli, sulla poetica degli spazi che ha aperto negli educatori dello Spazio ZeroSei una riflessione sul senso profondo sul tema dell’abitare, favorendo l’ingresso in immaginari con forte valenza simbolica. Il nuovo spazio è concepito come il corpo di una casa, fatto di stanze, che ognuno, mentre le attraversa, arriva ad abitare, ad appropriarsene, si fa avvolgere e proteggere. Grande importanza, nell’allestimento, hanno avuto le narrazioni personali degli educatori, i loro ricordi d’infanzia, le rimembranze di “spazi passati” abitati in precedenti case, luoghi di educazione sentimentale. Le narrazioni hanno orientato la scelta di arredi che offrissero nuove suggestioni e significati a percorsi esperienziali legati all’immaginario dell’abitare, dell’accoglienza, della cura, delle relazioni. Giocare ad abitare una casa, è quello che viene proposto con la frequenza allo Spazio ZeroSei. Bambini e adulti diventano a poco a poco, stanza dopo stanza, gli abitanti di spazi immaginari e intimi dove incontrano l’altro e se stessi, scoprono sensazioni, immagini e ricordi che favoriscono una “educazione al sentire”, attraverso un’immersione in un contesto sensoriale.

La Casa del Tempo si compone di diverse stanze, identificabili, come in ogni abitazione, per la loro funzionalità. La prima stanza

è quella dell’accoglienza, il tinello, dove sotto un tavolo alto alto alto, si raccontano storie che introducono al tema della casa. Disposte in cerchio ci sono piccole e differenti sedie colorate: ogni ospite può scegliere quella che più gli piace per prepararsi all’ascolto delle storie. In questa stanza c’è anche un lungo mobile fatto di cassetti e sportelli dove si può curiosare e scoprire gli oggetti che vi sono celati: tazze, piatti, bicchieri, teiere in miniatura. C’è poi la “stanza del lavoro”, allestita come laboratorio per creazioni con la carta, ma caratterizzata soprattutto da angoli speciali: il tipografo, il sarto, il ciabattino, il tessitore, frutto delle narrazioni personali degli educatori.

Nella stanza della camera e dei giochi ci sono arredi morbidi, cuscini, tappeti, un cucù e giocattoli di altri tempi, oggetti inconsueti, di legno e latta. Infine, la soffitta

sono rivolti alle scuole dell’infanzia per tre mattine, e per famiglie e bambini nella fascia 0-6 anni sia la mattina che il pomeriggio. Durante l’anno sono organizzati corsi di cucina etnica, ginnastica dolce per mamme e bimbi in marsupio, corsi di massaggio infantile, laboratori a tema. In 2016, the social enterprise “Con i Bambini” published a national call to third-sector organizations and schools, with a view to expanding educational and child care services in the 0-6 age band, specifically focusing on educational poverty. Among the 13 organizations selected from the call response, the partnership formed by Coop. Sociale Pantagruel in Pistoia (project leader), Municipality of Ventimiglia, Assoc.

Alteramente of Lecce, and the A. Vespucci Comprehensive Institute in Vibo Valentia stood out. The system agents involved are INVALSI for impact assessment; Turin’s XKE’? social enterprise, to handle communication and sensitization to participation in local actions, and the Municipality of Pistoia for training directed at promoting exchanges on the project’s emerging themes.

pazio ZeroSei is a project selected by the social enterprise “Con i Bambini” social enterprise as part of the Fund for the Fight against Children’s Educational Poverty. Divided nationally into different territories, like Lecce, Pistoia, Ventimiglia, and Vibo Valentia (note 1), used the Compagnia di San Paolo’s ZeroSei action program as the model for an experimental project, The Box of Good Ideas (Scatola delle Buone Idee), which began in 2014 and was carried out by the XKE’? social enterprise in Turin.

The key aspect uniting this project’s various partners is linked to the offer of an informal, flexible space dedicated to building social relationships between children and adults. Inaugurated last 7 September, the creation of Spazio ZeroSei in Pistoia was possible thanks also to a city whose identity has been built over time on educational services for children and their families, especially on the theme of educational environments “that have a specific meaning in themselves, capable of referring to educational, social, and cultural values that have become Pistoia’s own signs of belonging” (Giovannini, 2018).

Spazio ZeroSei is therefore the result of a lengthy evaluation of this situation and a line of research that led to the design of an innovative service, distinguished by an informal, active plan. The intention was to create an environment where wonder and imagination could find a home capable of encouraging the senses, emotions, and imaginations of children and adults. Experiencing the space Patrizia Menichelli is a researcher of sensory methodologies applied to theater, art, education, artistic processes for the town, and working groups. She is a wellknown member of Enrique Vargas’s international company Teatro de los Sentidos in Barcelona. She also works on independent art and theater training projects, using a sensory methodology. She has trained teachers and adults through the Municipality of Pistoia’s Educational Services, Il Funaro in Pistoia, Coop. Pantagruel in Pistoia, Fondazione Teatro Metastasio in Prato, comprehensive institutes in the Provinces of Prato and Pistoia, Istituto Gestalt Firenze - Fondo Arti Gestalt Azioni e Contaminazioni, Centro Xylo in Sassari, and the University of Girona UdG (Es). Her most recent performance-courses are Immaginando Prezzemolina, Da Capo...i giorni del cielo, Poetic Dinner, and Cosa lasci di te agli altri?

of Time (Casa del Tempo) are brought to life through a training course, led by Patrizia Menichelli, on the poetics of those spaces that led the Spazio ZeroSei educators to consider the profound meaning of living, encouraging entry into a strongly symbolic imagination.

The new space is conceived as a body of a house, made up of rooms where everyone who passes through them gets to dwell and take possession of them, becoming wrapped and protected. The educators’ personal stories, childhood memories, remembrances of “past spaces” in earlier houses, and places of emotional learning were very important in the setup. These stories directed the choice of furnishings that offer new suggestions and meanings to experiential paths linked to the imagination of living, welcoming, attention, and relationships. A very frequent suggestion at Spazio ZeroSei is to play house. Little by little and room by room, the children and adults began to inhabit these imaginary and intimate spaces where they encounter each other as well as themselves, discovering sensations, images and memories that encourage “learning to feel” through sensory immersion.

The House of Time has several rooms that are identified by their function in every home. The first room, a dining room, is for welcoming, where the stories that introduce the house’s theme are told under a very high table with small, differently colored chairs arranged in a circle below. All the guests can choose the chair they like best to get ready to hear stories. In this room, there is also a long

piece of furniture made of drawers and doors that can be perused to discover the objects hidden there: miniature cups, plates, glasses, and teapots. Then there is the “work room”, set up as a workshop for paper creations. It is especially characterized by special corners for a typographer, a tailor, a cobbler, and a weaver – products of the educators’ personal stories. In the rest and games room, there are soft furnishings, cushions, rugs, a cuckoo, and old-fashioned toys, unusual objects made of wood and tin. Finally, there is the attic, entered through a closet. It is the room with the unexpected, populated by objects, fragrances, old clothes, and “story-telling suitcases” that are open to memories (a picnic basket and the grandparents’ toilet), or that, when closed, hide dreams, and noisy, luminous imaginary landscapes that can only be seen by looking through small external holes.

Each week, the experiential paths at the House of Time target kindergartens for three mornings and families with children in the 0-6 age range in both mornings and afternoons. During the year, ethnic cooking classes, low-impact exercise gymnastics for mothers and babies in baby carriers, infant massage courses, and themed workshops are organized. M’illumino d’inverno Nel mese di Dicembre e fino al 6 Gennaio un vero e proprio percorso di luci e di arte ha attraversato il centro storico della città ottenendo grandi consensi.

“M’illumino d’inverno” è un progetto di videomapping che è stato pensato e sviluppato dall’Associazione culturale Spichisi – con la collaborazione di artisti e professionisti, sia locali che internazionali - per illuminare con proiezioni artistiche alcuni dei più significativi monumenti architettonici della città.

Dopo le proiezioni sulla facciata del Palazzo Comunale dello scorso anno - Spichisi è tornata a illuminare la città con un progetto più esteso che partendo dal tema “Storie condivise”, coinvolgendo piazza Duomo, piazza San Bartolomeo, l’ex ospedale del Ceppo, il Giardino di Cino, la Chiesa di San Filippo e la Basilica dell’Umiltà ha creato una sorta di percorso da seguire che passando per vicoli e strade secondarie ha consentito di scoprire angoli nascosti e suggestivi di Pistoia: una città nella città, unita da un’illuminazione unica e riconoscibile: un lungo filo rosso caratterizzato da proiezioni e performance.

Il risultato è stato una comunità intera che si ritrova e si riscopre, vive le piazze, si perde nei vicoli della propria città, parla col proprio vicino, si lascia meravigliare e sorprendere.

Gli artisti che hanno dato forma e sostanza al percorso di M’illumino d’inverno sono stati Marina Giovannini, Riccardo Goretti, Massimo Bonechi, David Hartono, Francesco Taddeucci, CYB, Simon Prod, Apparati Effimeri, Marina Arienzale, Matteo Cesari, Mauro Clemente, Bruno Belissimo.

“M’illumino d’inverno” is a video-mapping project conceived and developed by the Spichisi cultural association, with the participation of both local and international artists and professionals. Its purpose is to illuminate some of the city’s most important architectural landmarks using artistic projections. .

After the previous year’s projections on the facade of the town hall, Spichisi returned to light up the city with a more extensive project using the theme of “Shared Stories”. Incorporating Piazza Duomo, Piazza San Bartolomeo, the former Osepdale del Ceppo, Cino’s Garden, the Church of San Filippo,

and the Basilica dell’Umiltà a sort of path was created to be followed down alleys and side streets, which led to the discovery of Pistoia’s hidden and evocative corners. this city within the city was united by a unique and familiar illumination, a leitmotif characterized by projections and performances The result was a rediscovery by an entire community’s, bringing life to the squares, getting lost in the city’s alleys, speaking to neighbors, and being surprised and astonished.

L’anno appena trascorso è stato indubbiamente ricco di importanti novità. Dopo tre anni esatti dal suo lancio, il portale di valorizzazione territoriale www.discoverpistoia. it è stato completamente rinnovato nell’architettura, nella grafica e nei contenuti e da Aprile, la nostra casa editrice ha deciso di affiancare proprio al portale ed al trimestrale NATURART, che recentemente ha festeggiato i nove anni di pubblicazioni, un nuovo Urban Magazine mensile a diffusione gratuita, DISCOVER PISTOIA, creando una moderna e funzionale piattaforma di comunicazione integrata.

L’idea del magazine gratuito a servizio della città nasce sulla positiva scia di Pistoia Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2017, per informare mensilmente cittadini e turisti di tutte le età su eventi, iniziative, mostre, musei, manifestazioni, fiere e su tutto quanto ruota intorno alla città ed al suo territorio.

Si tratta di un prodotto editoriale che affianca il fratello maggiore

NATURART sposandone in toto la filosofia e la linea editoriale, naturalmente con il vantaggio di una periodicità mensile e di un portale lo affianca che permette di trattare gli argomenti con grande attualità. Questo ha consentito fin da subito di avere al proprio fianco partner importanti e qualificati come il Comune di Pistoia, la Biblioteca San Giorgio, l’Associazione Teatrale Pistoiese, la Fondazione Caript, i comuni di San Marcello - Piteglio e di Quarrata, i Musei Civici Pistoiesi, il Cai di Pistoia, la Fondazione Marino Marini e altri ancora. Su ogni numero inoltre, presenti anche una cartina turistica della città, approfondimenti speciali su eventi o argomenti rilevanti, due pagine dedicate al basket di serie A con interviste ai protagonisti e approfondimenti sul campionato ed un calendario eventi, curato dalla nostra redazione, che diventa ogni numero sempre più completo.

Dal primo numero uscito a fine Aprile, DISCOVER PISTOIA è cresciuto in maniera esponenziale sotto tutti i punti di vista: le pagine sono passate da 24 a 40 con l’obiettivo di aggiungerne presto altre 8, l’elenco dei partner e degli inserzionisti ogni numero si arricchisce di nuovi ingressi, i contenuti editoriali, già di livello, crescono di mese in mese ponendo l’attenzione su tutto ciò che crea comunità e arricchisce il nostro territorio, per non parlare dell’apprezzamento degli utenti finali, cittadini e turisti, che ha raggiunto in breve tempo un notevole livello di gradimento.

Stampato in 10.000 copie, DISCOVER PISTOIA è reperibile in numerosi punti di distribuzione in città e provincia oltre che negli Uffici Turistici, le Biblioteche, le Mostre, i Teatri ed i Musei di tutto il territorio. In addition, each issue contains a tourist map of the city with special insights on important events or topics; two pages dedicated to Series A basketball with player interviews and details on the championship; plus an events calendar. Edited by our editorial staff, it has become ever more complete with each issue. Each of the articles also has an abstract in English for foreign tourists.

Since its first issue came out at the end of April, DISCOVER PISTOIA has grown exponentially from all points of view.

The number of pages has gone from 24 to 40 with the intention of soon adding another eight. Its list of partners and advertisers has increased with each issue as new entries are added. The previously level editorial content has grown from

month to month, focusing on everything that creates community and enriches our local area, not to mention its positive reception by end users, townspeople, and tourists, achieving a considerable level of satisfaction within a short time.

With 10,000 copies printed, DISCOVER PISTOIA can be found at numerous distribution points in the city and province as well as in tourist offices, libraries, exhibitions, theaters, and museums throughout the entire district.

This past year has undoubtedly been full of important developments. Exactly three years after its launch, the www. discoverpistoia.it portal for promoting the Pistoia area has had its architecture, graphics, and content completely revamped. Moreover, since last April, our publishing house has decided to support DISCOVER PISTOIA, a new free-distribution, monthly urban magazine, together with the portal and the quarterly NATURART, which recently celebrated its ninth year of publication, thus creating a modern, functional integrated communication platform.

The idea of the free magazine at the service of the city came about in the positive wake of Pistoia Italian Capital of Culture 2017, as a way to inform townspeople and tourists of all ages of events, initiatives, exhibitions, museums, demonstrations, fairs, and anything else regarding the city and its district.

on sono soltanto i suoi oltre 150 dipendenti e l’indotto corrispondente a rendere la Fondazione Turati di Gavinana una delle realtà più radicate nel territorio della Montagna pistoiese. Ci sono anche il suo mezzo secolo di storia e le decine e decine di persone che, in questo lasso di tempo, hanno contribuito a scriverla con la loro presenza, il loro lavoro e il loro impegno teso al miglioramento continuo, oggi comprovabile da importanti attestazioni di qualità.

— Nata dove un tempo sorgeva una colonia estiva per ragazzi denutriti, provenienti da famiglie molto povere o vittime di guerra, con l’istituzione della Fondazione, nel ’66, la struttura divenne un centro di riabilitazione psicomotoria infantile che accoglieva pazienti da tutta Italia.

Oggi il Centro socio-sanitario di Gavinana si sviluppa su unità diverse, distribuite in 14mila mq di superficie, immersi in un parco di sette ettari circondati

dall’Appennino pistoiese.

«L’assistenza delle persone fragili non è unicamente una questione di terapie - afferma Maurizio De Scalzi, direttore generale della Onlus - perciò le nostre strutture sono pensate per offrire a ospiti e pazienti grandi ambienti fruibili, sia interni sia esterni, e spazi verdi». Un criterio, questo che ha accompagnato la realizzazione di tutti i tre centri socio-sanitari della Turati (oltre a quello di Gavinana, anche quelli di Vieste e Zagarolo), costruiti in posizioni panoramiche e verdeggianti. Rispetto alle altre realtà «sorelle», quella di Gavinana, che è la primogenita, riassume in sé le caratteristiche, la filosofia di fondo e l’offerta della Fondazione: propone infatti un’assistenza a 360 gradi per soggetti anziani e fragili, comprendente 230 posti letto distribuiti tra un Centro di riabilitazione, una residenza sanitaria per disabili gravi («I prati») e due residenze sanitarie assistite («Gli alberi» e «I fiori»).

— Motore di tutte le attività proposte è la riabilitazione, su cui la Fondazione vanta un’esperienza consolidata e completa. I servizi attivati comprendono fisioterapia e riabilitazione motoria per il recupero e il trattamento di patologie sia neurologiche sia ortopediche. «Le prestazioni sono rivolte, oltre che ai nostri ospiti, anche a pazienti provenienti dagli ospedali di Pistoia e Pescia - spiega Rosario Imbriaco, direttore sanitario del Centro di riabilitazione di Gavinana ma negli ultimi anni, a riprova dell’ottimo lavoro svolto dal nostro team di fisioterapisti e logopediste, è cresciuto il numero dei pazienti provenienti dai nosocomi di Firenze, Empoli e Prato».

Accanto agli aspetti strettamente terapeutici, la Fondazione presta grande attenzione anche a fattori quali la pulizia degli ambienti o la qualità del cibo. «Per chi soggiorna a lungo da noi l’alimentazione è importante - dice De Scalzi - e per

questa ragione in ognuna delle nostre sedi è presente una dietista: l’idea è elevare il più possibile i livelli di qualità e benessere nelle strutture. La gestione della quotidianità, inoltre, è affidata a équipe composte da medici, operatori, educatori e animatori impegnati a per far sì che la vita nelle residenze non sia passiva o solo dedicata alle terapie, ma comprenda anche socializzazione e intrattenimento». Sulla Montagna pistoiese, a questo scopo, sono nate molte proficue collaborazioni con le istituzioni, le scuole, le associazioni culturali e di volontariato.

— È anche grazie alla sensibilità e alla considerazione verso tutti questi aspetti che il Centro sociosanitario di Gavinana ha acquisito nel 2018 il marchio Qualità & Benessere. Quest’ultimo si basa su indicatori come ad esempio il cibo e l’empatia del personale, e rappresenta una rilevante attestazione di qualità. «Un percorso, questo, che presto sarà intrapreso anche per le altre sedi», precisa De Scalzi, che aggiunge: «Ci preme inoltre restare al passo con i tempi e con i progressi medici: a tal fine, dal 2017 abbiamo creato un comitato scientifico composto da primari e docenti universitari, capace di sovrintendere e coordinare tutta la nostra attività medica e assistenziale». ☜

ot only do the more than 150 employees and the corresponding allied activities make the Fondazione Turati in Gavinana one of the most well-established institutions in the Pistoia mountain district, there is also the half-century of its history written by the dozens of people who, over this period, have helped though their presence, work, and commitment towards continuous improvement, now proven by notable quality certificates.

La storia di una donna di oggi, ma anche un viaggio verso il centro di sé, verso il bisogno di essere madre, di amare, di trovare un porto che la accolga senza volerla cambiare. Una donna, la società postmoderna definita liquida da Bauman, un amore fallito, oscuri segreti di famiglia, la ricerca del senso della vita, il bisogno di spiritualità di ogni essere umano in un romanzo che assume a tratti il passo lieve della favola e che gioca con le percezioni del lettore conducendolo all’interno di una storia fatta di abbandoni, amore e perdono. La neve è la protagonista invisibile e silenziosa di un racconto che ha un forte legame con la tradizione artistica giapponese e con il simbolismo zen.

La Magia della Valle Dimenticata è un libro per bambini scritto da Maurizio Ferrari e illustrato dagli alunni delle classi IV e V della Scuola Primaria P. Petrocchi di Cireglio, che hanno dato voce alla propria fantasia cercando di rappresentare i vari personaggi e l’ambiente che li circonda così come li vedono – appunto – dei bambini che abitano in montagna. Una favola preziosa, perché non urla, non sgomita, non impone, ma sussurra al cuore, accarezza la fantasia e soprattutto suggerisce alle menti dei bambini. Le favole sono ancora più preziose se lette o raccontate dai nonni, che mentre leggono o raccontano, diventano essi stessi parte attiva della narrazione, talora interpreti, talora personaggi, ma sempre attori rassicuranti e amorevoli. È proprio per questo che nella Magìa della Valle Dimenticata l’autore ha scelto, come narratore, un nonno che racconta alla nipotina questa storia, che non è completamente inventata, anzi…

Rossella Baldecchi, nota pittrice ed insegnante di Design al Liceo Artistico di Pistoia, con “Viva in Giappone - Diario di un viaggio d’arte”, racconta giorno dopo giorno, il suo ultimo viaggio in Giappone in occasione di una sua mostra personale a Tokio, proponendo al lettore una narrazione antropologica, cercando di evidenziare - aiutata anche dalla propria sensibilità artistica - luoghi, persone, momenti che il turista spesso non è in grado di percepire e apprezzare. Prendendo letteralmente per mano il lettore, abbandonando per una volta pennelli e colori a favore della macchina fotografica, l’autrice, passando per le straordinarie bellezze artistiche e naturalistiche e per le abitudini e tradizioni che caratterizzano il Paese del Sol Levante, ci guida alla scoperta del Giappone di oggi, in veloce e costante mutazione.

A woman, postmodern society defined as liquid by Bauman, a failed love, obscure family secrets, the search for the meaning of life, every human being’s need for spirituality in a novel that at times steps lightly into a fairy tale and plays with the reader’s perceptions, leading him into a story of abandonment, love and forgiveness. Snow is the invisible and silent protagonist of a story that has a strong link with the Japanese artistic tradition and Zen symbolism.

La Magia della Valle Dimenticata is a children’s book written by Maurizio Ferrari and illustrated by the students of classes IV and V of the P. Petrocchi Primary School in Cireglio, who gave voice to their imagination seeking to depict the various characters and the environment that surrounds them as, indeed, some children who live in the mountains see them. It is a priceless tale because it does not scream, elbow its way, or impose, but whispers to the heart, caresses the imagination, and above all suggests to the minds of children. Tales are even more precious if read or told by their grandparents, who, as they read or tell, become an active part of the narration themselves, sometimes as interpreters, sometimes as characters, but always as reassuring, loving actors. It is precisely for this reason that in La Magia della Valle Dimenticata the author has chosen a grandfather as narrator, who tells his granddaughter this story, which is not completely invented. On the contrary...

With “Viva in Giappone - Diario di un viaggio d’arte”, Rossella Baldecchi, noted painter and teacher of Design at Pistoia’s Art High School, recounts day by day her last trip to Japan during one of her solo shows in Tokyo. She offers the reader an anthropological narration, seeking to highlight – helped by her own artistic awareness – places, people, moments that the tourist is often unable to perceive and appreciate.

Literally taking the reader by the hand, for once she abandons brushes and colors in favor of the camera. Through its extraordinary artistic and natural beauties as well as the habits and traditions that characterize the Land of the Rising Sun, the author guides us to the discovery of today’s fast and constantly changing Japan.

40° Anniversario del Mercato antiquario di Pistoia

Approfittiamo dell’occasione di questo imminente anniversario, per rinnovare l’interesse della Comunità Pistoiese intorno all’ormai pluriennale Mercato Antiquario di Pistoia che fu inaugurato il 12 Maggio 1979, in una gioiosa giornata ricca di pubblico e di espositori provenienti da ogni parte d’Italia.

Significativa, la dichiarazione rilasciata ad una pubblicazione dell’epoca, dall’allora Assessore al Commercio Renato Vannucci «Si tratta di un’iniziativa culturale che si è felicemente innestata nel centro medievale di Pistoia, divenendo mèta di turismo in cerca del “pezzo pregiato” e momento di ritrovo per i cittadini pistoiesi» Il successo della manifestazione consisteva, oltre alle rarità da collezione esposte, anche nel fatto che parallelamente al mercato A cura del Comitato Pro-Mercato Antiquario di Pistoia

venivano promosse iniziative espositive, culturali, creative che permettevano ai visitatori anche momenti di partecipazione attiva.

E così in ogni occasione di svolgimento del Mercato Antiquario venivano organizzate manifestazioni collaterali, spettacoli teatrali, concerti sinfonici e da camera tenuti da musicisti a livello internazionale.

Inoltre, mostre d’arte, rassegne di pittura, esposizioni cinofile e gare ippiche, esposizioni e sfilate di vecchie automobili e antiche carrozze per le vie del centro che suscitarono l’entusiasmo e la curiosità di tanti cittadini e turisti.

Il passare del tempo permise, però, di evidenziare difetti e difficoltà nel mantenere ad alti livelli le iniziative e la qualità dei prodotti esposti e la qualità degli espositori.

Fu ritenuto pertanto, che tutto ciò era dovuto alle difficoltà meteorologiche durante i mesi invernali e l’inclemenza del tempo determinò la scelta unilaterale di

far svolgere il Mercato Antiquario in una sede coperta, come tutt’oggi avviene ogni mese nella ” Cattedrale”, capannone dell’ area ex Breda situato in via Pertini e ristrutturato come Centro Fiere e attrezzato con bar e tavola calda. Qui il mercato si svolge nel secondo week end ogni mese, escluso Luglio e Agosto.

Il Mercato Antiquario compie dunque 40 anni grazie al contributo degli espositori pistoiesi e di altre città che in questo tempo hanno continuato ad esporre sui loro banchi arredi d’epoca, rarità e curiosità collezionistiche, numismatica, filatelia, opere d’arte, libri e grafica d’autore, mantenendo vivo il dialogo tra le esigenze del mercato, il pubblico e l’amministrazione comunale, che ancor oggi permette, con il suo aiuto di guardare ad un futuro ancor più prestigioso e significativo, facendo tesoro di tutte le esperienze maturate nel passato.

«This is a cultural initiative that has been successfully introduced to Pistoia’s medieval center, becoming a destination for tourism searching for the “jewel in the crown” and meeting point for the townspeople of Pistoia».

The event’s success consisted not only in exhibiting collectible rarities but also in the fact that, together with the market, various cultural initiatives were promoted that also allowed enthusiastic participation of visitors.

Therefore, at every Antiques Market, side events were organized that included theatrical performances plus symphonic and chamber concerts held by international-level musicians.

In addition, art shows, painting exhibitions, dog shows and horse races, exhibitions and

parades of old cars and old carriages through the streets of the center piqued the enthusiasm and curiosity of the many townspeople and tourists.

Nonetheless, the passage of time has brought to light the event’s limits and the difficulties in maintaining important initiatives and the quality of the products on display and of the exhibitors. The main problems were related to weather difficulties during the winter months and the inclement weather determined the unilateral choice to move the Antiques Market to a covered area, as is still the case monthly in the “Cattedrale”, a shed in the former Breda area located on Via Pertini. It was renovated as a fair center and equipped with a bar and a cafe. The market takes place here the second weekend of every month, excluding July and August.

The Antiques Market is now 40 years old, thanks to the contribution of exhibitors from Pistoia and other cities that, during this time, have continued to set up their stands of period furnishings, collecting rarities and curiosities, numismatics, philately, works of art, fine art books and graphics, keeping alive the dialogue between the needs of the market, the public and the municipal administration.

With the latter’s help, it is possible still today to look towards an even more prestigious and noteworthy future, taking advantage of all the experience gained in the past.

Cercis siliquastrum – conosciuto anche con il nome di Albero di Giuda - è una pianta della famiglia delle Fabaceae (leguminose) e appartenente al genere Cercis. Si tratta di un albero che si presta a quasi tutti i suoli, ma predilige i terreni calcarei dove sviluppa un buon apparato radicolare.

L’esposizione migliore è in pieno sole, al riparo da correnti e venti impetuosi.

Grazie alla sua indiscussa adattabilità è un albero ideale per le città, i giardini e i parchi soprattutto perché non ha bisogno di molte cure ed è molto resistente all’inquinamento atmosferico.

L’etimologia del suo nome viene dal greco kerkís (navicella) e dal latino siliqua, cioè baccello, in riferimento alla tipica forma dei frutti che produce. Nella tradizione cristiana la leggenda narra che proprio sotto ad un Cercis siliquastrum l’apostolo Giuda diede il famigerato bacio del tradimento a Gesù per poi, poco dopo, travolto da un inconsolabile rimorso, impiccarvisi. Da più parti comunque si pensa che il nome derivi dalla sua regione di provenienza, cioè la Giudea, con poi una storpiatura del nome frutto di un banale errore di trasposizione tra Giudea e Giuda..

Quello che rende particolare questa pianta è certamente la lussureggiante fioritura che fa capolino prima sulla corteccia del tronco e poi sui rami. I fiori, infatti, spuntano sulla corteccia nuda ancora prima delle foglie e poi si infittiscono sui rami fino ad avvolgerli completamente: il colore dei fiori, che sono tra l’altro commestibili, in genere va dal rosa porpora al viola e solitamente esplode da marzo ad aprile.

Known also as the Judas tree, Cercis siliquastrum is a plant of the (leguminous) Fabaceae family, belonging to the Cercis genus. This tree lends itself to almost any type of soil, but prefers calcareous soils in which it can develop a good root system. It is best exposed to full sun, protected from air currents and violent winds.

Its unquestionable adaptability makes it an ideal tree for cities, gardens, and parks, primarily because it needs little care and is very resistant to air pollution.

The etymology of its name comes from the Greek kerkís (shuttle) and from the Latin siliqua, i.e., pod, which refers to the typical shape of the fruit it produces. In the traditional Christian legend says that the apostle Judas gave Jesus the infamous kiss of betrayal beneath a Cercis siliquastrum, from which shortly afterwards, he hung himself, overwhelmed

by inconsolable guilt. However, it is believed that the name derives from its region of origin, namely Judea, with a mispronunciation of the name resulting from a trivial transposition mistake between Judea and Judas.

What makes this plant special is unquestionably its luxuriant flowering, which peeks out first on the bark of the trunk and then on its branches. The flowers sprout on the bare bark before the leaves do and increase on the branches until completely enveloping them. The color of the flowers, which are edible, usually ranges from a pinkish purple to purple, and usually burst into bloom from March to April.
