omen are—and have always been—a force to be reckoned with. While we still have a long way to go before women are seen in all eyes as perfectly equal to men, each small stand taken to acknowledge and celebrate the power of women is making a difference. I am especially ecstatic to hear the recent announcement that Harriet Tubman will appear on the front of our $20 bill, and other prominent women are being added to the $5 and $10 notes. It’s about time. So it’s a special treat to dedicate this issue to Women’s Wellness. In these pages, you’ll find insights on some health and wellness topics especially pertinent to being the best women we can be. Holly Baker, publisher Most of us know someone with thyroid issues, and this is such an important topic for women and men, as the thyroid controls so many aspects of our health. When our hormones are out of wack, seemingly minor symptoms can add up to bigger problems. More helpful information on the thyroid and iodine’s role in keeping it in balance can be found on page 34. A local woman we admire is Robin “Athena” Hall, an artist who creates clothing for active women and men and enjoys her life to the fullest, exploring all that Tucson and the Southwest have to offer. Learn more about this colorful and inspiring woman on page 20. This month, we’re also talking about some taboo topics, relating to boosting our libido (page 22), the health benefits of orgasms (page 26) and how looking good can lead to feeling good (page 30). It’s always in style to pamper ourselves and be reminded of the beautiful, strong and desirable women we all are—at every age. I hope you’ll share this celebration of women with your mom, sister, best friend, daughter, grandmother, neighbor or yoga instructor. And don’t forget to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to those special women in your life. Cheers, ladies!

Westrick offers energy work sessions and spiritual classes to the Tucson community to promote physiLisa M. Westrick cal, emotional and spiritual wellness. Westrick explains that reiki and other therapies she provides create change in our bodies through our senses. “We absorb and live in the world around us through our senses; therefore, our senses play a vital role during a session,” she says. “It varies from person to person which of our senses are engaged during the treatment and how the energy is received within our bodies. The purpose of one of these sessions is to restore balance to the holistic body.” A reiki treatment promotes healing through touch by channeling universal energy through her hands into a client’s body. Chakra therapy includes stimulating the senses of sight, touch and smell through the use of colors, gems and aromatherapy to restore and balance the Chakra system. Sound therapy uses vibrations from singing bowls, tuning forks and reiki chants to adjust and realign the body. “Whichever energy method you choose, it delivers energy into your body to areas which need it, to relieve stress and to promote healing from injury or illness,” explains Westrick. healthbriefs Overcoming Limiting or Negative Self-Talk

O

ur mind, if left unchecked, will take the path of least resistance when it comes to our thoughts and beliefs. We may start to believe things like “I will never get ahead”, “I can’t do it”, “I am overwhelmed and stressed out”, “I am just not lucky” and “I am not good enough”. These thoughts are not true, but when they play automatically over and over in our mind, we start to believe them and assume they are true. It is possible to stop the monkey mind. We can change and control our thoughts rather than letting our thoughts control us. We have the power to change our thinking and approach life from a new perspective. A properly trained coach can help us to become the best version of ourselves, changing and eliminating negative and/or destructive selftalk. Simple techniques can be implemented that will change our thinking and, therefore, change our life. By learning to change and control our thoughts, we can achieve increased motivation, optimism and balance, while reducing stress, worry and anxiety. Those who are experiencing burnout at work, overwhelm and never-ending stress, who want to break through blocks and limitations they are experiencing relating to a lifestyle change such as weight loss or fitness, or who want to improve relationships and communication, will find that it is all possible and easier than once thought. Renee Powers, owner of Human Potential Coach, is a Certified Wellness Coach and a Holistic Life Coach with a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Counseling. Cleansing Constipation

Reiki Training Usui, Level I Sunday, May 15th, 2:00 to 8:00 pm The Galatic Center, 35 E. Toole Ave. Pre-registration is requested as preparatory information is distributed before training day.

C

onstipation is a reflection of diet, fluid, breathing, emotions, thoughts, genes and culture. The condition can be lifelong and the basis for other seemingly unrelated illnesses, or it can be short-term and have obvious and immediate causes. Others might cycle in and out of it, not knowing why it is happening. According to Sylvester Yong, a doctor from Singapore overseeing a study on constipation and colon hydrotherapy, “Constipation is a problem that affects almost everyone at varying periods of their lives.” For many, constipation is the most common sign their digestive system is out of balance. The most obvious signs are fatigue, bloating and brain fog. When we are constipated, we’re saturated with residue from the gut that has seeped into the bloodstream and lymph, lodging in cells and tissue. It’s no wonder we become tired and our favorite jeans don’t fit around the waist. For women, there could be a number of causes relating to emotional or mental issues, trauma, poor lifestyle, diet, hydration or sexual and physical abuse. Constipation can lead to excess weight and gas and poor quality of life. It leads to poor habits, such as not exercising and overeating. It is embarrassing and hard to talk about. Shea Shea, of the Intestinal Health Institute, offers clients cleanses, along with colon hydrotherapy, to help get their intestines moving and happy again. Sheila Shea, of the Intestinal Health Institute, in Tucson, is offering a 15 percent off special on series of five, eight and 10 colon hydrotherapy sessions. Connect at 520-325-9686 or Intestines@SheilaShea.com. See ad, page 21.

eventspotlight Healing Movement Qigong Workshop with Joe Pinella

J

oe Pinella, founder and owner of Healing Movements System, will present a workshop on healing chronic pain with qigong, called Hope and a Roadmap, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 4. Attendees will learn the same powerful healing techniques that allowed Pinella to completely recover from what his doctors insisted would be lifelong paralysis. Tickets will be 20 percent off until May 12. “Too many people have given over the responsibility for healing to ‘experts’, when, in fact, the greatest expert is the innate intelligence of your body. With the right kind of guidance, this intelligence can do its job. It can achieve true healing by addressing the cause of pain or limitation, instead of just focusing on symptom management,” explains Pinella. In this workshop, Pinella will teach how to tap into an inner wellspring of hope and determination through the profoundly spiritual aspects of qigong. By listening to their own innate body wisdom, participants will learn how to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. The workshop is open to people of all skill levels, beginners and advanced. “Many people find that the most discouraging part of healing is actually when things start to get a little bit better,” says Pinella. “For some reason they stop whatever helped them get better and go back to their old habits. That’s why it’s important to make health part of a daily spiritual practice.” Location: Scottish Rite Cathedral, 33 Ochoa St., Tucson. For more information, call 520-235-7180, email JoePinella@gmail.com or visit JoePinella.com/events. See ad, page 7.

e live in fascinating and interesting times, with a lot of rapid change and opportunity taking place. So much possibility can be very exciting and empowering, but it can also feel overwhelming and even provoke fear, a sense of uncertainty and self-doubt. Many believe the ideas that change is hard or change is scary, and some believe it’s downright dangerous. This creates the perfect environment to resist forward movement or to sabotage the very change we desire. During these “stuck” moments, it’s helpful to pause and take in another perspective. Change is beautiful and powerful and has the ability to liberate individuals from what they have outgrown, what is no longer adding joy and fulfillment or what is out of alignment with new hopes, desires and dreams. Old paradigms break down in order for change and new paradigms to break through. The breakdown process takes on many expressions and can usher individuals into more self-potential. For example, a job that was once cherished may suddenly be causing us to feel stuck, unmotivated and downright unhappy. At the thought of moving forward, fear speaks up and lists all the reasons to stay put. We downplay our brilliance while silencing the desire to find something to evoke new growth, invigoration, meaning and inspiration. Or maybe we’re ignoring an inner voice screaming to add ourselves to the top of the priority list, depleted from pouring energy into the business, family, household and to-do list. This overwhelm partners with fear and convinces us that money can dry up if we don’t keep working at this fast pace, and only when the kids leave the house will we be a priority. All of this worry and pressure tends to eventually build up enough to cause a major event, or breakdown, thereby making way for positive changes. However, it is not necessary to reach complete breakdown before implementing change. Here are some indicators that change is knocking on our door.

Internal feelings of dissatisfaction. Experiencing the blahs and dreading going to work or home. Numbing out with eating, drinking, shopping, television or social media. It’s natural to want to feel quick relief, and it’s easy to get stuck here. Compulsive behavior is a sign that we’re battling the voice of reason with our heart’s desires. Putting on extra pounds. Oftentimes when denying or resisting change, we’ll exercise less and become more stationary. We’re tired of merely surviving. We know on a fundamental level that life is meant to be experienced, enjoyed and shared in loving ways. Yet, we feel like we’re constantly struggling to survive, working and paying bills, with little life enjoyment. Procrastination. We put off tasks that really aren’t that involved. Glorification of busyness. Many people brag about being busy, but are they making their hearts sing, or do they simply create a false sense of accomplishment? Playing it safe. Increased insecurities and negative self-talk become the common inner voice as we consider stepping out of something that’s no longer fulfilling.

Be aware that priorities are changing and make it a point to explore some new insights, interests, ideas or hobbies. • Get into nature. Take a restorative hike or find a great place to be outdoors. Taking shoes off and feeling the earth on bare feet (called “Earthing”) centers and grounds us, bringing clarity and a sense of confidence. • Slow down and take some personal space. A Robinesque Athena by Dale Bruder

oises Orozco’s statue of Athena, golden scissors and sewing needle in hand, stands seven feet tall in the courtyard of Athena’s Castle. This midtown Tucson property is art studio, garden, home and hearth for Robin “Athena” Hall, renaissance woman extraordinaire. Vibrantly vital, she is entering her crone years with an electrifying verve of a woman half her age. Twelve- to 15mile hikes, 60-mile road bike trips and mountain wilderness backpacking are normal for the loving grandmother and open-hearted lover of life. The clothing line business she started in her late 50s has customers trekking Tasmania, strolling Paris streets and celebrating themselves in her colorful designs every day. The popular press churns out advice and profiles of women who have reinvented themselves in midlife, typically after 25 or so years of having done what was expected of them—whether as a mother, wife or professional. The quest of new validation or journey to realize a latent talent 20

fuels female ambition to climb to new heights, taking on a mountain or a glass ceiling. Hall’s fully expressed femaleness has been more a continuous work in progress then reinvention. From the earliest age as a toddler in rural New Hampshire, Hall has been exploring simple expressions of old world hand sewing, farming and music. Both her grandparents’ farms were close by her parents homestead. Young Hall would walk through the woods, feeling the winds blowing through the trees, to grandmothers who taught her to sew on a treadle machine and cook on a wood burning stove, to playtime in hay barn lofts and helping the men keep the farm machinery running. She would recreate these happy memories in many forms throughout the years ahead. Her midlife wakeup happened in the ordinary way of our modern society: kids grown, husband divorced and a big case of self-doubt looming in front of her face. She took up long distance road biking, running, speed hiking and swimming; placed in races and triathlons; and filled her hours with training and nutrition. Backpacking the sky islands and canyons of the Southwest and rock climbing brought back the winds blowing through the trees, uplifting her heart and spirit. “Since childhood, feeling the wind has always been important to me,” recalls Hall. The outdoor athleticism provided a foundation to seek additional activities to enjoy a fuller experience of life. A community of healers invited her into their circle, renewing her experience of family. Two years living in the Bio-Touch house, led by a guru-like Paul Bucky, reinstated in her a heart-oriented approach to life. “If I have a philosophy, it began there—to be kind, good and cooperative with people,” says Hall. A growing curiosity of ancient ways led the spiritual traveler to the Temple of the Presence, where she became familiar with the alchemy of Saint Germain and the radiance of the Ascended Masters. The TucRobin Athena Sewing son community embraced her participation in the kitchen, and she provided epistle covers and ceremony gowns from her sewing machine. Hall describes a dreamlike state in 2010, when she was told by the Ascended Masters to start a sewing business and call it Athena Garments. Her casual interest became an enterprise. “I like it best when a creative thought hits me. I immediately imagine what it will look like and how it will come together, jump into looking for fabric, finishing the garment in a few hours,” muses Hall. She looks through the shelves filled with bolts of patterned and textured cloth, some decades old,

Robin Athena on Vespa waiting for its creative thought. “The ones that take one creative session are sometimes the very, very best.” A patron of the arts, Athena is an artist in her own right. Athena’s lines of Southwestern chic, active outdoor attire and tailored clothes are designed in her sewing studio—its walls peppered with her primitive painted images of nature. Hall longed for colorful and versatile, active, outdoor clothing for women that wasn’t mauve or putty colored, so she began making her own clothes to complement her love of the outdoors. Soon after, her friends began asking for their own hiking and biking clothes. Adventurous and theatrical in her Athena Garments YouTube channel, Hall entertains subscribers with videos including scenes such as: yeah-hawing, slipping and sliding down the smooth rocks of Wild Horse Canyon; splashing into mountain spring flow; bike riding around the Sun Circle after dusk, glowing like an electrified field in headlights; and strumming a banjouke, belting out a rewrite of Buffalo Gals, about Buffalo Palooza at Cat Mountain Station. Self-described as shy, Hall regularly costumes up in self-creations while out and about at art gallery openings. In enlightened moments of Athena’s wisdom, she recognizes

that what is called self-doubt may actually be the internal art critic, hungry for the next creative thought that will top the last one. In 2012, the fashion designer journeyed to France with Victor Navarro’s ParisSan Carlos Art Exchange. The artist exhibited her Athena Southwest clothing line in a tour through Avallon, Quarréles-Tombes, Toutry and other French towns. Her designs came to the forefront again in the 2015 Clifton, Arizona Colors of Copper themed art competition, where Parisian artists wore vests and skirts of her design. An expanding roster of artists and connoisseurs of couture don Athena-designed garments. Gabriel Ayala wears her vests in his performance concerts. At the recent Vintage Palooza at Cat Mountain Station, Kerstin Block, founder of the Buffalo Exchange em-

pire, bought a modernism-themed skirt and a Frida Kahlo patterned dress. The statue of Athena holding golden scissors and needle stands in the courtyard of the temple Hall has built to her. A wide circle reaches to a 20-by-40-foot vegetable garden, a fountain by Lee Blackwell, The Nest sleeping room, Hestia (the 1920s era Home Comfort wood cook stove), an art studio, fruit trees and chickens. This rural, self-sufficient ecology, detailed with functional art objects, is home comfort for the creative expression of a woman ever in process. SPARK UP YOUR LOVE LIFE Natural Ways to Boost Libido by Lisa Marshall

nderlying health issues aside, a hectic schedule packed with work deadlines, kids’ sporting events and household chores can leave little time for intimacy. Letting that pattern go on too long can become a problem. “There’s a use-it-or-lose-it phenomenon that occurs,” says Dr. Anita Clayton, a University of Virginia psychiatry professor, neurologist and author of Satisfaction: Women, Sex, and the Quest for Intimacy. Despite what hyper-seductive female media stereotypes suggest we

believe, in the real world, 39 percent of women feel they lack sex drive, and nearly half experience some kind of sexual dissatisfaction, according to a survey of 32,000 women published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. About one in eight women are significantly distressed about it. “The truth is, many of us don’t have great sex lives,” confirms Clayton. Sprout Pharmaceuticals introduced Addyi, aka filbanserin, last fall; the first prescription drug to address low libido in women. Some heralded the controversial medication as “the little

pink pill,” seeing it as the female version of males’ blue Viagra pill, which a half-million men purchased in its first month on the market in 1998. Yet several months after its launch, only about 1,000 women had tried Addyi and many doctors declined to prescribe it, due to its lack of widespread efficacy and possible adverse side effects, including low blood pressure and fainting when combined with alcohol. “This is a complex problem that requires a complex solution,” says Honolulu-based naturopathic physician Laurie Steelsmith, author of Great Sex Naturally: Every Woman’s Guide to Enhancing Her Sexuality Through the Secrets of Natural Medicine. “For most women, drugs are not the answer.” She notes that for men, boosting libido is largely a matter of boosting circulation and blood flow to the penis. But for women, desire for lovemaking stems from an interplay of emotional, interpersonal, hormonal and anatomical drivers that make lack of desire harder to “treat”. The truth is that many simple, effective, non-drug approaches exist. As Boulder, Colorado, marriage therapist Michele Weiner Davis puts it, “There’s no reason why a woman wanting a more robust sex life cannot have one.”

Overall Health Check

The number one culprit for low libido in women is subpar physical health, says Steelsmith. “To be capable of fully enjoying pleasure, you need a healthy body.” Carrying excess weight can both erode self-esteem and lead to reductions in a woman’s natural circulating testosterone, a critical hormone that helps ignite pleasure circuits in the female brain and increase sensitivity in the clitoris. Being underweight can result in fatigue and low sexual energy, diminished production of excitatory brain chemicals and low levels of estrogen, key for keeping a woman moist. Meanwhile, Steelsmith explains, excess stress can prompt the body to “steal” from libido-boosting hormones like progesterone in order to make more of the stress-hormone cortisol. High blood sugar can drive down

testosterone, while high cholesterol can clog pelvic blood vessels, dulling sensation. Depression, diabetes and thyroid disorders are other major libido killers, says Clayton. “If you treat them effectively, you may see big improvements.” Women seeking to improve their sexual health should first try to achieve a healthy weight via diet and exercise, Steelsmith says. She recommends an organic diet rich in complex carbohydrates (which keep blood sugar balanced), lean protein (a precursor to desire-related neurotransmitters) and good fats (which help keep vulval tissues lubricated). Exercise—another circulation booster—is also key. Do it before a scheduled hot date for even better results. One 2014 study of 52 women found that those that worked out prior to an anticipated romantic encounter had significantly increased sexual desire.

cream or suppositories. If an infection occurs, try to treat it naturally, avoiding antibiotics, which can spark yeast overgrowth. Instead, Steelsmith recommends using tea tree oil, goldenseal, or probiotic douches or suppositories, available online and at health food stores. Kegel exercises are a famous aid, involving clamping down as if interrupting urine flow, before releasing and repeating. This not only help fends off urinary incontinence and infection, it also strengthens and firms pelvic muscles, rendering enhanced enjoyment for both partners.

Birth Control Pills: Oral contraceptives can boost levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, which attaches to desire-promoting testosterone, making it harder for the body to access it.

Make Time for Intimacy

Smoking: It impairs circulation to genitals.

Research has shown that over time, frequent lovemaking actually causes structural changes in certain areas of the brain as new connections form and sex-related regions grow stronger. Stop, and those areas atrophy, making physical intimacy feel awkward once it’s resurrected. Pamper Femaleness A sexless relationship can also be Many women avoid sexual encounters emotionally devastating for the perfor fear of sparking a urinary tract or son, often the male, that wants more contact, says Weiner Davis, author of vaginal infection. keep waiting to get what they want, the relationship suffers. She counsels couples to deliberately make time to address both partners’ needs. Schedule a long walk or intimate dinner to talk over feelings; also schedule sex. “Some people say, ‘Oh, but that’s not spontaneous enough,’” says Weiner Davis. “But even if you put it on the calendar, what you do with that time can still be spontaneous and playful.” While most women assume that they need to be in the mood first, research by University of British Columbia Psychiatrist Rosemary Basson suggests that in some women, desire only comes after physical arousal, especially by a loving partner that takes the time to meet her needs. “I wish I had a dollar for each time someone said to me, ‘I’m not in the mood, but once I get into it, I surprise myself, because I have a really good time,’” says Weiner Davis. She’s not advising women to make love when they really don’t want to, but rather to be open to it even when the circumstances aren’t ideal. “A lot of women feel like the house has to be clean, with the kids asleep and free of distracting noises,” she says. “Sometimes, just do it.”

Is Sex Essential?

For some in this subset that are unable to find relief via lifestyle changes, she would recommend Addyi, said to boost desire by changing brain chemicals. On the other hand, many women don’t need to take any action at all. “If someone has low sex drive and it doesn’t matter to them or their partner, it’s not a problem.” That said, the benefits of attending to an affectionate, healthy sex life can go far beyond the bedroom, improving overall health and strengthening relationships, notes Steelsmith. Sex burns calories, increases circulation, releases calming and painkilling hormones like prolactin and prompts production of the “bonding hormones” vasopressin and oxytocin. “When you are in a loving relationship and you express that love through your body, physiological changes occur that can help you bond more deeply with your partner,” she says. “The more you make love, the more love you make.”

Clayton points out that while 42 percent of women experience either low sex drive or satisfaction, fewer than 12 percent are really bothered by it. “Some women experience great grief Lisa Marshall is a freelance health and loss about this. Wise Women’s Lust for Life by Linda Joy Stone

I

n modern society, a lot of pressure is placed on younger women to appear a certain way, to be appealing and have a healthy libido or healthy sexual drive. In Latin, libido means desire, willfulness or lust—akin to libore, meaning to be pleasing. Cultural expectations, and not living from one’s own heart, can interfere with a healthy libido. Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung states that “the libido is identified as psychic energy… that manifests itself in the life process and is perceived subjectively as striving and desire.” It also represents a healthy balance between the feminine and masculine—the yin and yang aspects of ourselves. In Chinese Medicine, the libido, with its chemical mix of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and sex hormones, is associated with qi and yin and a healthy balance between the heart and kidneys. The heart is said to house the mind and spirit (yang), and the kidneys (yin) rule our life essence. The kidney energy naturally dissipates as we age. However, consciousness and resonance of the heart grow stronger with awareness and joyful expression. As women age, we can certainly remain “juicy” and pleasing through a healthy lust for life and becoming more and more pleasing toward our authentic selves. Women of mature age are becoming “sexier” through knowing who we are, trusting our own authority and becoming more playfully expressive. There need not be anything “anti” about aging. Graceful aging cultivates spiritual maturity—acceptance, appreciation and celebration of the natural cycles of life. Barbara Marx Hubbard, vital 86-year-old futurist and visionary, invites taking libido to a higher level. Imagine a new embodiment of the “suprasexual” that is discovered through “vocational arousal”. In essence, it is doing and expressing what we love and what we are passionate about. Passion is heart medicine. Add into the formula that most delicious ingredient of all—humor—and we can enhance the life force. We are certainly in a time of dramatic awakening and liberating change, and we have the opportunity as the wise visionary trickster, to essentially reinvent ourselves and live a juicy, lush life.

exual health is often overlooked in our society because it is a touchy subject, even though it is an integral part of who we are. These are some simple practices and exercises that will bring greater pleasure to life—as well as greater overall health. Orgasms occur when we circulate sexual energy (the most powerful energy we possess) up through our bodies until it reaches the brain, where it then reverses course back to the genitals and rapidly expands into a wave of bliss, blocking out conscious thought. There are methods and practices that not only enhance orgasms, but greatly expand them and use the energy from them to heal our minds, our bodies and our spirits. Though some women find difficulty in achieving orgasm, all women have the ability to experience orgasm. Some of these practices come from Tantra Yoga and Taoist traditions from China, and they all involve learning how to breathe. Women often hold their breath during orgasms, forgetting to exhale. This causes tension between the body and the mind; the orgasm is “right there” just out of reach, and then it runs away. Learning to relax into the orgasm, breathing through it and making sound allows the orgasm to come to them, bigger and better than before.

START A LOVE AFFAIR — WITH YOURSELF by Kate McDavid

hen was the last time you were fascinated and infatuated with yourself? In 2004, Dove commissioned a worldwide study (“The Real Truth About Beauty: A Global Report”) on how women relate to beauty. What they found was alarm-

ing. Only 4 percent of the women around the world would think of themselves as beautiful, but 80 percent agree that all women have something beautiful about them and do not see it. The report concluded that programs for teens that centered on

increasing self-esteem had a positive impact on that age group. But what about the women that went through adolescence and lost a lot of their self-confidence already? Borrowing some of those tips from the Dove teen programs, we can find things within to be fascinated and infatuated with, as adults. Here are just a few suggestions. Consider your positive role models. Who are those women that you admire for qualities other than physical beauty? Whether it be someone you personally know or a public figure, think about what they have that intrigues you. List at least 10 items you love about yourself that are not related to appearance. Do not hold back. This is not a time to be coy—just be honest. Read the completed list and celebrate each unique quality. Think of three activities that make you feel feminine and delicious when you do them. This can range from having a massage to getting your nails done, or just having a bubble bath that is not interrupted by anyone needing you. Pick at least one a week and do it. Christie Brinkley Shares Her Secrets to Lasting Beauty Why She Still Looks Terrific After 40 Years as a Model by Gerry Strauss

upermodel extraordinaire Christie Brinkley looks as amazing in her 60s as she did when she first graced the cover of Sports Illustrated nearly 40 years ago. In a new book, Timeless Beauty, Brinkley reveals her anti-aging secrets, many of which involve reliance on healthful foods, a positive attitude, exercise and good skin care. Much of what she’s learned is reflected in her line of Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare. Here, she shares some highlights of how she keeps her mind and body healthy.

Why did you become a vegetarian at age 14? When I was 13, I picked up a book from the nightstand in my parents’ bedroom called Miami and the Siege of Chicago by Norman Mailer. I happened to open to a page with a highly graphic description of Midwest slaughterhouses. What I read turned my stomach because I loved animals and wanted no part in this inhumane system. I swore at that moment I would never eat another piece of meat and have not done so since. For the past 49 years I have enjoyed the resulting good karma in the form of healthful benefits from avoiding the antibiotics, growth hormones and fats associated with a carnivorous diet. 28

Was it tougher to maintain your natural standards as your career became filled with travel and tight schedules? After I first became a vegetarian kid living at home, I soon convinced my family to go vegetarian, too. I read a lot of books to learn how to replace meat protein with healthier choices. Through the early years, as I continued to learn about options, I tried many kinds of vegetarian, macrobiotic and vegan approaches. Once I started modeling in seashore locations, it seemed natural to me to add bits of fresh fish and some dairy; so for the most part I have been a lacto ichthyo variation of vegetarian. I raised my children as vegetarians, and recently my daughter, Sailor, and I took the next step to become mostly vegan. I allow myself a little mozzarella and an occasional salmon dish when my body is craving it, because I think we need to listen to what our body needs. After the environmental disasters of the BP oil spill in the Gulf, made worse by toxic dispersants, and the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown that pumped radioactive isotopes into the Pacific, I am extra-cautious about the salmon I choose and don’t eat other seafood. How much of anti-aging do you believe is tied to mental and emotional health? Growing old gracefully is all about the positive energy that you use to power through your day and project to others. Happiness is a youthful quality and a smile is always our best accessory; it’s also been proven to release feel-good endorphins. When you take good care of yourself by eating right and exercising, you naturally feel better about yourself. If we’re feeling down, stressed or depressed, we’re tempted to eliminate exercise, which is the very thing that could lift us up and make us feel better. The more we move, the merrier we are.

Because you also recognize the importance of treating the body well from the outside as well as from the inside, what other practices do you apply? With everything we know about how the sun can damage our skin, it’s crucial to use a moisturizer with a broad ultraviolet spectrum blocker of both UVA and UVB rays to prevent wrinkles and hyperpigmented spots. I created my own skin care line that offers an SPF 30 broad-spectrum moisturizer that also defends against infrared rays [IR], which represent more than half of the sun’s damaging rays that reach Earth. IR emissions also come from manmade objects such as computers and cell phones. Beyond that, I wanted a product that takes advantage of our body’s own circadian rhythms, using special peptides that help the body build collagen and elastin as we sleep and repair. Using a gentle exfoliating scrub is also key, a step many people overlook; I’ve included it in my daily skin care routine for 30 years. Gerry Strauss is a freelance writer in Hamilton, NJ. skincarespotlight Hormonal Acne During Menopause

M

any people struggle with acne the majority of their life, starting with a pimply face in their early teens. Our hormones may finally calm down for a while as we reach adulthood, only to go haywire again during menopause. Menopausal acne, an unfortunate symptom many women have to deal with, is caused by an increase of androgenic hormones in the female body. While there are numerous products and methods we’ve all tried to rid our skin of acne, some are better at clearing the problem than others. One such product is “Nothing to Hide”, an all-natural based acne treatment with a unique formula, which is the first of its kind when it comes to treating acne with the topical use of Beta-Sitosterol in a well-balanced moisturizing lotion. This compound works to lessen the severity of acne and other sebaceous gland disorders, while moisturizing the skin and reducing lines. Users of “Nothing to Hide” have noticed drastic changes in their complexion, as well as improvement with a number of skin conditions some thought would never go away. “Nothing to Hide” can be found online and at the local New Life Health Center.

ravity takes its toll as years pass, and many women find themselves bemoaning crow’s feet, frown lines and turkey necks that make them look older than they feel. Experts point to the loss of “fat pads” in the cheeks, bone loss around the eye sockets and cheekbones and overall weak muscles as potential contributors to facial aging. Natural exercise programs designed to reverse these unpleasant signs of aging comprise a new fitnessfor-beauty trend. “Face and neck muscles somehow have been left out of mainstream fitness programs,” observes Denver esthetician and massage therapist Grace Mosgeller, who addresses this void with her series of eight FaceFitnez audio and video exercises. “If you tone the muscles of your face and neck, the skin attached to those muscles firms and tones as well, creating a natural youthful look.” Muscular stress—the good kind— is at the core of facial fitness, says Mosgeller. She cite’s Wolff’s Law, a well-known medical theory that bone grows and remodels in response to the tension or muscle engagement put on it. “Regular facial exercise works the muscles to correct the loss of both muscle tone and bone density and build collagen. It might be called the equivalent of push-ups, pull-ups and

natural awakenings

abdominal tucks for the face.” Carolyn Cleaves, owner of Carolyn’s Facial Fitness, in Seabeck, Washington, near Seattle, a former college professor, developed a facial exercise program for herself upon detecting early signs of aging. With the help of two primary care physicians, she designed a routine that includes 28 basic exercises that target all 57 facial muscles. “As we get older, we lose the underlying layer of fat just beneath the skin, and as a result, we look old and tired,” says Cleaves. She agrees that exercising the face actually helps rebuild lost bone, enlarges the muscles and also builds collagen. A study from the University of Rochester, in New York, confirms that loss of bone mass can start in women as early as age 40. It starts in men 16 to 25 years later. Mosgeller’s facial exercises work to fade wrinkles and lines and firm up sagging flesh, yielding visible results in as little as two weeks of dedicated training. She says, “Within six to nine months, it’s possible to look five to 10 years younger than when you started.” Her claims are verified by Dr. Carol Lipper, in Denver, who states, “I’ve done the exercises and they work. The trouble is compliance. It’s a lot of work.” She confirms that she saw improvement in her droopy eyelids after just two or three weeks of adhering to

Mosgeller’s workouts. “It seems that every three months or so, I see another leap in results and a younger look,” adds Cleaves of those using her program. Here are a few crucial areas to target, with just a few of these experts’ recommended remedies. Cleaves’ Crow’s Feet Eliminator: Place fingertips on top of the head, thumbs resting near the corners of the eyes. Shut eyes tightly and slide thumbs toward the temples for a count of five. Repeat 10 times. Mosgeller’s Rx for Droopy Eyelids: Place index finger on top of a closed eyelid, and then lift fingers up and slightly to the outside. Blink hard and hold. It’s preventive, as well as curative, says

Mosgeller, so those over 45 should repeat this 100 times a day, while younger individuals should repeat 20 to 50 times a day. Mosgeller’s Frown Line Eraser: Pull brows apart with fingers and hold for two seconds. Repeat 50 to 100 times up to six times per week. This is meant to relax and tone the muscles, not build them. Cleaves’ Turkey Neck Buster: Tilt the head back slightly. With palm facing the neck, grasp under the chin with a wideopen hand and slowly slide hand down to the collarbone; hold there while counting to 10. Repeat five times daily. to people to find out what’s going on. She notes, “The healing begins when women feel heard and cared about and feel that their concerns are validated and addressed.” A consultation might also address sexual function. “A lot of women talk about decreased libido or response, and we give them permission to go there and talk about sex without any stigma,” says Cooper. “We have enhancement tools to get people to have a fun, playful and satisfying sex life. We’re very excited about helping women come in to their fullness, regardless of their age.” With respect to detoxing the body, weight loss and diet, Cooper comments, “It’s not rocket science. As Michael Pollan has said, it’s basically about eating real food, mostly plants, and not too much.” Cooper will provide consults to improve a patient’s diet. She is passionate about her work as a healer, harnessing the body’s innate ability to heal. Women are caregivers, and sometimes that means we neglect to take care of ourselves. It is critical to create some time for carefree activities in our schedules. Cooper is a proponent of exercise, yoga, meditation and time outdoors in nature as components of a healthy lifestyle to minimize stress. “Self-care is important. Women get so busy taking care of others that they

neglect their own needs and joys and passion.” she counsels. Sholes-Douglas’ medical aesthetics practice to enhance women’s beauty includes dermal fillers, injectables for lines and wrinkles, as well as Coolsculpting for the body. Fillers can slow the aging process by stimulating collagen and adding volume to plump wrinkles. Injectables like Botox work by temporarily stopping the contraction of the muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles. Coolsculpting is an innovative way to contour body fat away, by freezing unwanted fat cells. An even more revolutionary treatment offered for females is ThermiVA, which uses painless radio frequency heat energy to shrink and regenerate vaginal tissue. Sholes-Douglas is impressed by the results her patients have experienced. It can improve mild to moderate stress incontinence, increase

vaginal lubrication and help with menopausal vaginal atrophy, vaginal laxity and sexual function. The success of Sholes-Douglas’ practice has resulted in a heavier workload, but she recognizes that there are more important things in life than work. “My motto is: create freedom, flexibility and fun,” she says. When not working, she loves spending time with her husband and two children, and participating in community activities. Tula Wellness is located at 2404 E. River Rd., in Tucson. Solutions for a Sluggish Thyroid Keying in on Iodine by Kathleen Barnes

I

t seems that a common mineral supplement that costs just pennies per day can stimulate an underactive thyroid, restore metabolism to normal levels, curb excess appetite, banish fatigue and generally improve everyone’s health. Mounting scientific evidence shows that iodine may be an answer to many such health woes, especially for women. “The thyroid acts as a throttle, the gas pedal for all metabolic functions

in the human body,” says Dr. Richard Shames, of San Rafael, California, author of Thyroid Mind Power. If the thyroid is a driving force of human physiology, then iodine is its key fuel, says Dr. Robert Thompson, of Soldotna, Alaska, author of What Doctors Fail to Tell You About Iodine & Your Thyroid. “Every single cell in your body depends on thyroid hormone, and the thyroid depends on iodine for proper functioning.” “Without sufficient thyroid hormone, we have low energy, slower metabolism, lower immunity to illness and impaired repair and maintenance of bones and joints,” explains Shames. After testing thousands of patients in his practice, Thompson estimates that 90 percent of North Americans are iodine deficient, citing what he calls “epidemic proportions” of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) with symptoms comprising obesity, fatigue, brain fog, irregular or absent menstrual periods, hair loss and heat and cold intolerance.

Major Culprits

Estrogen: Hypothyroidism is overwhelmingly a women’s disease, with women five to eight times more likely to suffer from it than men, according to the American Thyroid Association. 34

Tucson

natural awakenings

“Estrogen inhibits the body’s natural ability to absorb and utilize iodine,” says Dr. Jorge Flechas, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, who specializes in thyroid disorders. “We find three periods in life when women need more iodine: at puberty and during both pregnancy and perimenopause or menopause. It’s because estrogen levels tend to fluctuate wildly at those times, neutralizing the ability of iodine gained through select foods to balance thyroid and other hormones.” Flechas prescribes iodine supplements for most women at all three stages of life. Toxic halogens: Iodine belongs to a group of halogens that includes chlorine, bromine and fluorine, three chemicals that are both toxic to the human body and block its ability to absorb iodine, explains Thompson. “They’re everywhere, in our air, water and food. It’s nearly impossible to avoid them,” reports Shames, a longtime advocate in the movement against the common practice of adding fluoride (a derivative of fluorine) and chlorine to municipal water. Fluoride is also added to many brands of toothpaste. Bromide is part of almost all commercial flour and flour products, as well as soft drinks. Shames offers an historic insight. “Fluoride was once used to slow down an overactive thyroid, as recommended by the physicians’ bible, the Merck Manuals. Now we’re putting it in the water supply and wondering why we have a mushrooming epidemic of low thyroid incidence.” Food: “So-called ‘iodized’ salt doesn’t contain much usable iodine, and neither does pink Himalyan sea salt,” Shames cautions. We’ve known that our soil is deficient in essential minerals such as iodine since at least 1936, when a special U.S. Senate report concluded that our soil was already severely depleted. “This simply means that when we grow produce, the plants cannot extract these vital nutrients from the soil for us—including iodine—if those nutrients aren’t there in the first place,” says Thompson. If anything, he adds, U.S. soils have become even more sterile in the 80 years since the report and, “Factory farming and the use of genetically modified (GMO) crops, Roundup herbicide and

Nine in 10 North Americans may be iodine deficient. ~ Dr. Robert Thompson synthetic chemical fertilizers have undoubtedly worsened the situation.”

Sources of Iodine

It’s difficult to include sufficient natural iodine in our daily diet unless we follow a Japanese-style diet that includes lots of seaweed and saltwater fish, says Shames. Other food sources are shellfish, turkey, cheese, yogurt, milk, eggs, legumes, cranberries and strawberries. There is little agreement about the optimal levels of iodine people need. The U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains that we need 150 micrograms a day, but iodine advocates are quick to point out that a person eating a typical Japanese diet (where hypothyroidism, or low thyroid activity, is rare) ingests 12.5 milligrams of iodine each day—83 times the amount recommended by the government. Shames recommends getting an iodine lab test (available without a prescription at CanaryClub.org) to determine exact needs. Thompson recommends potassium iodide and sodium iodide supplements for thyroid health. Kathleen Barnes is author of numerous natural health books, including User’s Guide to Thyroid Disorders.

T

Importance of Thyroid Health

hyroid issues affect 12 million people in America and many are not receiving the help they need to feel good. Under-functioning thyroids can cause fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, constipation and poor temperature regulation. Under-functioning or hypothyroid conditions affect about 10 million Americans, while over-functioning or hyperthyroidism affects roughly 6 million Americans. Physicians tend to look at signs and symptoms. For an under-functioning thyroid, signs could be cold hands and feet, thinning or brittle hair, constipation, dry skin, dry mucus membranes and loss of the outer edges of the eyebrows (also called Queen Anne’s sign). A doctor will order labs to check TSH, and maybe Free T4 and/or Free T3. Naturopaths are taught to check five to six different labs. A functional medicine specialist will check 10 labs—TSH, Total and Free T4, Total and Free T3, TPO, TGA, Reverse T3, selenium and iodine. For an over-functioning thyroid, signs could include increased or irregular heart rate, pressure behind the eyes, increased blood pressure, unexpected weight loss, sweating and irritability. It is best to check all 10 versus the standard five labs, yet there may still be other labs to run. These lab values are checked against certain physical exam findings. Iodine deficiency can lead to hypothyroidism, while over exposure to iodine can cause hyperthyroidism, so it is important to not overdo one’s intake of iodine, kelp or seaweed. Inflammation of the gland can cause hyperthyroid symptoms, and benign tumors can overly stimulate the thyroid, causing swelling which can lead to excess T4 and/or T3 to leak out of the gland. Both conditions can be treated with herbs. Medicines are given, but many times by including alternative treatments, a more satisfactory outcome can be achieved. Dr. DeeAnn G. Saber is a Naturopathic Doctor at Transformational Medicine PLLC. She has treated hundreds of thyroid patients and personally knows multiple ways to feel great even with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. M

ark Frighetti, qigong teacher/ practitioner at ZY Qigong, in Tucson, is certified to teach ZY qigong levels 1 and 2 and has been teaching since 2005. Qigong is a simple life science; a proven way to connect with the energy and life around us by combining physical and breathing exercises with powerful visualizations and meditations. This movement of energy releases stress and offers healing to mind, body, and spirit. The original purpose of qigong was to bring the practitioners into a qigong, or deep meditative state. This state connects one to the energy of the earth and universe, as well as to life around us. Those who practice say that the connection creates a peaceful feeling that can be nurtured and grown from a simple energetic sensation to feeling that the whole body is vibrating with energy and joy. “Qigong is truly something that you can fall in love with,” enthuses Frighetti. “This simple life science moves one to a higher level of being by empowering the heart so one can choose to not live in fear, but in love and joy instead.” Location: Desert Milagros, 3438 N. Monthly Bio-Touch Condition Workshops

T

he International Foundation of Bio-Magnetics has unveiled a brand new program to teach Bio-Touch. To emphasize the simplicity of learning the touch-healing technique, Condition workshops are now being held from 6 to 8 p.m., the fourth Thursday of each month, at the Bio-Touch Center, in Tucson. The new program is designed to make it even easier for students to learn how to help their friends and family members who are suffering with specific diseases and health concerns. Students will become familiar with and practice the touch points on the body that relieve pain and other symptoms of that particular health issue. Each workshop focuses on how to address one health condition, and each month the Foundation will highlight a different health condition—everything from migraine headaches to bunions. Massage therapists can receive two continuing education credits for each workshop. Cost: $15 for public, $10 for members. Location: 5634 E. Pima St., Tucson. For more information or to sign up for a workshop, call 520-323-7951 or visit JustTouch.com. See ad, page 36.

Picture Your Future Creating a Vision Board Makes Dreams Real by Jayne Morris

ision boards, a powerful tool for transformation, comprise a collage of pictures, phrases, poems and quotes that visually represent what we would like to experience more of in life. Building one works to uncover hidden desires and inner guidance that help clarify the details of a roadmap to our future. Anyone can create one in a few hours. The layout may be intuitive, placing pieces where feelings direct; circles within circles like a mandala; or in titled, pie-shaped segments arranged in the form of a wheel. Board basics: Choose a large piece of poster board, corkboard or canvas the size of an unfolded newspaper. Gather pens, scissors, glue or pins, sticky tape and a current selfie. Gather 10 to 20 magazines ranging from women’s and men’s fashion, health and fitness to hobbies, house and garden and travel, including animals representing specific character traits. Pick topics that resonate, uplift and inspire, energize or bring relaxation. Beauty salons, libraries and community centers like to clear out old issues; an alternative is to

assemble images by using a computer. Prepare a space: Find a quiet, relaxing spot, free of disturbances and distractions. Mindset magic: Let go of ought-tos, shoulds and musts. Rest assured that feeling the desire to be good, to do good or have something good in our life means we can make it happen, even if we do not yet know how.

A vision board clarifies our deepest desires. Flick, snip and stick: Have fun seeing what jumps out and catches your attention while riffling through the magazine pages. Clip and place these images in a pile, and then sort out those that feel really right. Arrange: Experiment with the positioning and relationships of words and images until it feels good. Take a photograph as a reference. Affix pieces either so they can be repositioned or permanent, leaving spaces to symbolize an openness to receiving more ideas. Purpose Statement: Play with words that describe desired values and qualities

ision boards have become a staple tool in my life. Before learning about the Law of Attraction, I would make collages of images that I felt Kathleen Geis good looking at—things that I wanted to see appear in my life. Little did I know that creating a concrete representation of what I wanted was exactly what I needed to put me into the right state of mind for allowing those things to manifest into reality. To create a vision board, you simply need to cut/print out pictures that represent what you want to see manifest in your life, and that you feel a strong sense of positive emotional connection to. Tape or glue them onto a piece of paper or poster board. Look at them often and imagine that they are already in your life. Feel the joy behind the images. If doubt ever creeps in, simply revisit your board and focus again on the end result—on the joy you would feel in having those things become reality. ~ Kathleen Geis Realtor, home stager and re-designer
