was losing peoples’ names. One grandmother had died of dementia in her early 60s; the other had terrible problems with our names, but lived to 92. I was scared. I didn’t want to catch it. So I turned it over to God, and there was the answer, right there on the bathroom floor. The Natural Awakenings article mentioning “Sharp Again Naturally”, a collaboration between a therapist and a nutritionist who just knew there was a natural solution to the Alzheimer’s epidemic. Their UCLA studylink reported that 9 out of 10 people had reversed their symptoms in three to six months. Diet and lifestyle changes. Stress reduction. What a concept. I had already scheduled an appointment with a neurologist. I made a copy of the Natural Awakenings article and the UCLA study. She was impressed. So many solutions in one little magazine. Thanks, Holly, and thanks, Natural Awakenings.

D

enisse Cabrera has been a Certified Life Coach for four years, and along with her RN, CDE and Functional Medicine training, it is her life coaching skills that yield the most success for clients. Her client base is varied, but the majority do not have health-based concerns as their priority. As such, she has transitioned her business from Natural Diabetes Nurse to Rise Above It Coach to better reflect how Denisse Cabrera she works with clients. “The New Year is abundant with New Year’s resolutions, but when it comes to making changes in our life, whether career, relationships or health, often the obstacle is not lack of knowledge, but lack of desire/motivation or fear of change,” says Cabrera. “Life coaching is the most powerful way to make sustainable lifestyle changes.” Cabrera is particularly interested in helping women between the ages of 30 and 50 who feel “stuck and overwhelmed by too many distractions/responsibilities and want a simpler, magic-filled lifestyle that reflects what they value most,” she explains. “I do this not because I am an expert in their lives, but because I am an expert in helping them fulfill on their own best advice. Following through with what we actually want to accomplish is streamlined, effective and fun with the right coach.” Location: 3210 E. Fort Lowell Rd., #103, Tucson. Santa Rita Springs Celebrates 10th Anniversary

S

anta Rita Springs is celebrating its 10th anniversary of serving warm water immersions of various kinds, on January 19. The pool was finished in December 2006, but had to cure for 30 days before the water could be heated. “So, I took my rocking chair out there and babysat that pool for a chilly month, just watching the waterfall, adding plants and singing to the water, waiting for the sunrise,” explains Dorothy Richmond, Licensed Massage Therapist. “January 19 was the day we added salt and lit up the heater—finally. The scaffolding and building equipment was finally gone, the room filled up with steam, the music system played loud and clear and my dreams came true.” Richmond had fallen in love with aquatic massage in 1999 at Harbin Hot Springs, at Elaine Marie’s Watsu 100 for Women class. “Canyon Ranch had completed its Aquatic Center and I joined the staff offering aquatic massage, where I began to really see the profound relief of warm water therapy. Guests with severe chronic pain told of instant relief, just entering the pool,” enthuses Richmond. “The gentle stretches and flowing movement in a womblike environment brought tears of joy to grown men and women. Some said they felt reborn in a way that no other massage method could give.” For more information, call 520 622-4201 or visit SantaRitaSprings.com. See ad, page 52.

Pampered Skin Studio Offering NovaThreads

N

ovaThreads, FDAapproved PDO absorbable sutures, are an exciting new addition to the aesthetic tool box in that they actually lift, tighten and smooth the soft tissues of the face and neck with a basic, in-office session causing little to no downtime and with excellent results, according to Suzanne Pear, RN, Ph.D., a licensed esthetician at Pampered Skin Studio. To make this affordable treatment even more attractive, Pear is offering a 20 percent discount to all Natural Awakenings readers during 2017. “Although advances in injectable fillers such as Juvederm and neuromodulators like Botox have been effective for treating different aesthetic indications, many practitioners and clients will agree that there continues to be an unmet need in minimally invasive aesthetics for an actual ‘lift’ of the skin and soft tissues in different areas—particularly the lower face and neck,” explains Pear. NovaThreads are dissolvable threads that are placed under the skin in different areas to achieve lifting of the cheeks, the jowls and the neck bands, as well as other areas of the face and body. The procedure is performed in the office and is comfortable and safe for patients. It achieves fast results that last from 9 to 15 months, depending on how many threads are placed at the session and the level of skin laxity that the patient has. The cost of the treatment varies by area, but is similar to the price of fillers.

NEW MENU FOR 2017

newsbriefs Paddington at The Loft Cinema

A

s part of Loft Jr., a free monthly series showcasing great new and classic familyfriendly films from around the world, The Loft Cinema will present a screening of Paddington at 10 a.m., January 14. Pre-show activities hosted by Mildred & Dildred Toy Store will begin at 9:15 a.m. The event is presented by Trail Dust Town and sponsored by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange. Based on the beloved children’s books by Michael Bond, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) who travels to the city in search of a home. With his old hat, battered suitcase, duffle coat and deep love of marmalade, Paddington is definitely not the average bear. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined—until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says, “Please look after this bear. Thank you,” and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a nasty museum taxidermist who has a dastardly plan in store for our tiny hero. Can Paddington escape her evil clutches and find happiness with his new family? A delightful, decidedly British, live-action family comedy, Paddington features an all-star cast including Nicole Kidman, Imelda Staunton, Michael Gambon, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi and Hugh Bonneville. Location: 3233 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-795-0844, email Info@LoftCinema.org or visit LoftCinema.org. See ad, page 18.

Bite off? Jaw off? Hips off?

TMJ and the Movement of All 29 Cranial Bones—An Entirely New Paradigm by Steven A. Swidler

I

n the world of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) treatment, there are many different approaches, each meeting with varying degrees of success. Almost all TMJ treatment is based on the assumption that the skull is solid, the suture joints are closed and that the only moving bone in the skull is the jaw bone and the tiny bones in the ear whose vibrations allow for hearing. However, from the medical field of Cranial Osteopathy, we know that all 29 bones of the head move with a fluid motion of the cerebrospinal fluid, bathing the brain and continuing through the spinal cord all the way to the tailbone (sacrum). In fact, all of the entire body connective tissue (fascia) and the body skeletal system are interconnected like an intricate pulley system through which this motion can be detected. If there have been traumas or injuries, there can be a distortion in this soft tissue “body glove” that can affect the function of muscles, blood flow and nerve signaling, as well as many other body sys-

tems. This is similar to having a kink in a water hose. These restricted areas exist in the connective tissue like layers of an onion, even after the original injury has healed, which can create pain and compensations in movement and function anywhere in the body. In the fields of structural and manual medicine, we know that all spinal segments affect each other in an “as above, so below” relationship. For example, if there is an imbalance at the cranial base of the skull, we can usually find an imbalance of the level of the hips. Level hips are foundational for a properly aligned spine and a level cranial base. All of this is directly influenced by the jaw’s TMJ position. A restricted cranial base impinges on the vagus nerve, the longest of the cranial nerves, which carries parasympathetic nerve signaling to the heart, lungs, diaphragm and digestive system. The TMJ has often been referred to as “the Great Masquerader” because it affects so many areas and functions of the body, with seemingly unrelated symptoms. These symptoms can drive sufferers from medical doctors to specialists in search of relief. Most people never think to contact a dentist, since the symptoms masquerade as so many other complaints that seem primarily medical in nature. Indeed, the TMJ is a body joint, and by definition, a medical issue. But because of how the teeth and bite define the positioning of this joint and function, it often requires dental support or attention. With this in mind, when choosing a dentist to help guide one’s TMJ to balance, the best choice is a practitioner who understands the movement of all cranial bones and works from a holistic perspective to create full body/jaw alignment. Dr. Steven A. Swidler, DDS practices at Medicine Wheel Dental, at 4650 W. Jojoba Dr., in Tucson. Connect at 520-743-7101 or MedicineWheelDental.com. See ad, back cover.

This can result in eczema, psoriasis, rashes, boils and acne,” notes MacKenzie. In TCM, the facial redness of rosacea originates in a heating of the blood caused by toxicity. eventbriefs Tom Bird Allows Writers to Overcome Obstacles and Get Published

T

om Bird will bring an opportunity for participants to write their book in a weekend retreat, March 2 through 5, in Sedona. The Tom Bird Method blends a comprehensive and holistic support system that opens participants to a free-flowing mental, physical, emotional and spiritual state called The Divine Author Within. Like a world-class athlete in the zone, great writers that dramatically affect their readers write in a similar state. When writing is embraced as an innate art form, supported and flowing naturally, The Divine Author Within state works for anyone, from those with a preformed idea to those that do not believe they are very good writers. Bird states, “Common literary education and training focuses exclusively on left-brain intellectualism. This overly critical perspective thwarts what would otherwise be a beautiful and natural process. The frustrated writer is then born. Admittedly, all writers, like all human beings, have their insecurities.” Many would-be writers are desperate for help, which allows the Tom Bird Method to be a kind of literary midwife. Eighty-one percent of people feel they have a book inside them and are drawn to write for healing, transformation and the release of their divine potential, and they will receive complete support during the retreat. Regardless of where they are on the spectrum of their writing journey, they will release their earthly message of humor, insight, healing or entertainment by finally penning a book. This proven curriculum will lead attendees not only to the completion of their book in a weekend, but to the ability to get the book professionally published and potentially onto a best-seller list within a few months afterward. The Tom Bird Method programs are meant to flow, so participants feel ready to take the next step. Complimentary introduction classes are available. For more information, visit TomBird.com. Workshop and Meditation with don Jose Ruiz

A

uthor of The Fifth Agreement, don Jose Ruiz, will hold a workshop and meditation from 7 to 9 p.m., February 4, at the Galactic Center. Ruiz has collaborated with his father don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, on a new book that offers a fresh perspective and a powerful new agreement for transforming our lives into our personal heaven. The Fifth Agreement takes us to a deeper level of awareness of the power of the Self, and returns us to the authenticity we were born with. In this compelling sequel to The Four Agreements, we are reminded of the greatest gift we can give ourselves: the freedom to be who we redon Jose Ruiz ally are. In his early twenties, Ruiz lost his eyesight, and in his process of surrendering, he learned the value of learning to listen—to listen to his inner wisdom and integrity and to see different perspectives, while knowing nothing is personal. Through his surrender and faith, in concert with modern medicine, Ruiz recovered his eyesight. Ruiz has dedicated his life to sharing the ancient Toltec wisdom by translating it into practical, everyday life concepts that promote transformation through truth, love and common sense. Cost: $35/early registration, $45 at door. Location: 35 E. Toole Ave., Tucson. For more information, visit MiguelRuiz.com/family/don-jose-ruiz.

Awakening Attention in the Year of the Red Fire Rooster

The health + body you want . . . with joy, ease, and clarity

NOURISH U

by Dale Bruder

ONE-ON-ONE + GROUP COACHING

T

he year of the Fire Rooster begins on January 28. Being the sign of dawn and awakening, during the year, triumph and success can only be achieved at the price of hard work and patience. After the wild ride of the Year of the Monkey, Rooster brings a higher level of motivation to the means and matters of things. The Rooster’s phase is a good time to pick up the projects hidden away to protect from Monkey. It is again safe to apply attention to advancing career, business and relationships. Take the initiative in all matters of business, career and advancement. However, as energetic as one is inclined to be, pay special attention to those surrounding you, avoiding disputes around money and relationships. Rooster energy can turn calamities into blessings and get good results from misfortunate events by doing everything carefully in the first months of the year. Do this and everything will go extremely smoothly in the fourth, seventh and eleventh months. Plan well, end well. This caution has its root in the five elements distribution through the year. Single element zodiac sign Fire Roosters has no modifying element so must be paired with the Feng Shui cycle for the most benefit. The caution of careful action will benefit greatly. The Year of the Fire Rooster holds promise for starting a new love relationship. However romances that could have grown into solid marriages over time could be cut short for reasons beyond the control of the new lovebirds, for instance a professional or family move to another state or country. The wisest advice for the Year of the Fire Rooster is to be constantly reviewing the push/pull forces and adjust plans accordingly. The new awakenings and initiatives in auspicious months can turn best laid plans to waste. Maintained attainments and adjusted boundaries will hold in this energetic time. SABOTEURS Tackling Obesity’s Hidden Causes by Lisa Marshall

E

at less, move more. These words have been the cornerstone of diet advice for decades, leading millions of Americans to greet the new year with vows to cut calories and hit the gym. In all, one in five U.S. adults are dieting at any given time, according to the international market research firm The NPD Group, and 57 percent would like to lose 20 pounds or more. Yet few will reach that goal. One survey of 14,000 dieters published in the International Journal of Obesity found that only one in six had ever been able to lose 10 percent of their body weight and keep it off for a year. Another study, published in the last year in Obesity, followed up with 14 contestants from the 2009 TV reality show The Biggest Loser and found that despite efforts to keep their eating and exercise habits on track, 13 had regained significant weight since the competition. Four are heavier now than before participating on the show.

Diet experts say the battle of the bulge has been exceedingly hard to win for one clear reason: We’re oversimplifying the solution and underestimating the saboteurs. “We’re learning that it’s not as simple as calories-in and calories-out,” says Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith, an Ann Arbor, Michigan, physician specializing in functional and nutritional medicine and author of Why You Can’t Lose Weight. Research reveals that everything from food allergies to hormone imbalances and disruptions in gut bacteria can subtly undermine the best-laid weight management plans. Working out too much or eating too little can also backfire. Even a mean boss or a cold workplace cubicle can factor in. Certainly, diet and exercise are key, experts emphasize. Yet, if we’re doing all the right things and still seeing disappointing numbers on the scale, there’s still more we can do. Here are some common weight-loss saboteurs and what to do about them.

Underperforming Thyroid

The thyroid serves as a key metabolism regulator, dictating how efficiently the heart beats and muscles contract, how quickly the body turns nutrients into energy, and how well we burn off stored fat. When thyroid hormone production falls, metabolism can also decrease by as much as 40 percent. Yet as many as four in 13 women suffer from a thyroid hormone deficiency, says Toronto naturopathic doctor

WEIGHT-LOSS

Bite into a food we’re sensitive to and our body switches into “fight-or-flight” mode. It stores fat and water, releases histamines that widen blood vessels and inflame tissue, and cranks out stress hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine that make us want to eat more of that food. “You literally get a high so that you crave more,” says Smith. She notes that unlike true allergies, which can prompt an immediate reaction, food intolerances often manifest subtly over several days. When we are repeatedly exposed to a food we’re sensitive to, we feel bloated and sluggish, regardless of the calorie count. Allergy medications can also prompt weight gain, in part by boosting appetite. One study by Yale researchers found people that regularly ingested antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra were far more likely to be overweight than those not using them. What to do: First, cut out the mostcraved foods. “If someone tells me they just cannot live without cheese, I assume they are allergic to it,” says Smith. Or, try an elimination diet. Ban common allergens like milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts and gluten (if possible, try sticking to only rice and lamb—two hypoallergenic foods—for four days). Then reintroduce other foods slowly and monitor the results. To combat seasonal allergies naturally, try vitamin C, quercetin and butterbur supplements.

Food Sensitivity/Allergy

Natasha Turner, author of the new book The Hormone Boost. “You can diet and exercise until you are blue in the face, but if your thyroid is out of balance, you won’t achieve the body you’re looking for,” she says. “It’s a common cause of weight gain.” What to do: Get tested for levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and, if possible, T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) also. TSH signals the thyroid to make more T4, the inactive form of thyroid hormone that is converted into T3, the form the body is able to use. Abnormal blood levels of any of these can impact metabolism adversely, and a TSH test alone may be unable to identify a problem, caution Smith and Turner. In some cases, medication may be required. Otherwise, move to embrace lifestyle habits that reduce stress levels, because the stress hormone cortisol can inhibit thyroid function. Get eight hours of sleep; sleep deprivation also impairs thyroid function. Eat lots of fiber, which helps the body eliminate excess estrogen and other thyroid-damaging metabolic byproducts. Also, stock up on foods containing tyrosine (almonds and avocadoes), and selenium (Brazil nuts). In some cases, if an iodine deficiency is at play, a doctor may suggest iodine supplements or iodine-rich foods like kelp and sea bass.

Imbalanced Gut

The trillions of microorganisms in our gut have a profound impact on our ability to maintain a healthy weight, says Dr. Raphael Kellman, a New York City physician practicing functional medicine and author of The Microbiome Diet. “The gut bacteria are the gatekeepers of the calories that enter our body,” he explains. Research shows that certain species of bacteria aid in the metabolizing of carbohydrates, while others help break down fats and protein. Some turn on genes that fight inflammation; others influence how well the body responds to insulin. Diversity and balance of helpful bacteria species are keys to health. “If changes in the percentages of certain bacteria occur, the microbiome loses its ability to help us maintain a healthy weight,” says Kellman. In one landmark 21st-century study by University of Colorado researchers, swapping the gut bacteria

Load up on fermented foods like kim chi, sauerkraut, kefir and yogurt. As The Biggest Loser contestants learned, losing too much weight too fast can bring metabolism to a screeching halt; the body, coaxed into starvation mode, moves to conserve fuel and store fat. “If you try to lose weight by drastically slashing calorie intake and going crazy on the cardio machines, you’ll do more harm than good,” says Turner. Performing intense cardiovascular exercise such as running, cycling or swimming for more than 45 minutes can make cortisol levels surge, accelerating muscle loss and impairing the immune system. That’s counterproductive because muscles burn calories at rest, too. Consistent over-exercise can also prompt the stressed body to respond in a fightor-flight fashion, storing more belly fat and leading to the “skinny but fat” body composition common among models and marathon runners, she says. Skipping meals can prompt the key thyroid hormone T3 to fall off too, further slowing metabolism. Plus, six weeks into a restrictive weightloss program, levels of the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin also start to decline, killing motivation and fueling cravings. The result is a weight plateau or even weight gain. What to do: Unless walking, limit workouts to 40 minutes, advises Turner. Instead of slogging away at a steady pace on the treadmill, try intervals (short, high-intensity efforts separated by brief rest periods), which have been shown to boost both fat burning and cardiovascular fitness. For example: five-minute warm-up, one-minute run at fast pace, one-minute run at moderate pace, repeat 10 times, five-minute cool-down. Also,

incorporate strength training into three workouts each week. Include some fat, protein and carbohydrates with every meal. If insisting on counting calories, shoot for 450 to 500 per meal and 150 per snack for women; 500 to 600 per meal and 200 to 300 per snack for men. Every week to 10 days, enjoy a carb-loaded “cheat meal” such as pancakes or pasta; it supports any languishing thyroid and feel-good hormones, gives associated neurotransmitters a jump-start and keeps us from feeling deprived.

Dark, Cold, Stressful Workplaces

Alan Hedge, Ph.D., a workplace design researcher with Cornell University, in New York, says women, who tend to have less muscle and body hair to provide natural warmth, are at particular risk of packing on pounds due to an overly cold environment. “When the body is cold, it adapts by laying down insulation, which is fat,” he says. Even without eating extra calories, if we’re constantly cold at work, as 31 percent of women are according to a recent CareerBuilder survey, we tend to gain about a pound or two per year, says Hedge. Other research, conducted at Northwestern University, in Illinois, shows that workers exposed to more light in the morning weigh about 1.4 pounds less on average than those toiling in windowless cubicles. The suspected reason is that morning light triggers a cascade of hormones that positively impact appetite and metabolism. Another study, by Ohio State University researchers, found women that experienced a stressful event at work or elsewhere and then ate a fat- and calorie-laden meal the next day burned 100 fewer calories from that meal than non-stressed workers. What to do: At work, move the desk toward a window or at least take a walk every morning. Bring a space heater, extra sweater or hot tea fixings. After an ultra-stressful workday, eat especially healthfully that night. Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

Paying for memberships out-of-pocket (often electing high-deductible plans) or via a health-sharing plan, clients value coverage that includes annual wellness exams, phone or virtual appointments and educational classes, plus followups and urgent care at minimal costs. The U.S. mainstream fee-for-service approach, whether paid by insurance or cash, has been criticized for encouraging unnecessary tests and procedures because doctors are paid for services performed. To maintain income, they typically shorten appointments to increase the number of patients they see. Lewis emphasizes, “Time is the valuable factor in DPC— healthy lifestyle changes, which can prevent or reverse 70 percent of health concerns, cannot be communicated in 10 minutes.”

Medical Cost-Sharing

AFFORDABLE

For generations, Christian communities have operated health care sharing ministries (HCSM) to collectively share the cost of each other’s medical bills as an alternative to outside insurance. Members are exempt from current Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA) mandates. Liberty HealthShare, a nonprofit HCSM chartered by the Mennonite church, believes that everyone has the right to practice religion as they see fit. Their members share a commitment to personal health and sharing in the burden of health expenses with others that have these values. “Many in the functional and integrative medical arenas also believe in these principles,” says Tom Blue, of Richmond, Virginia, a director with The Institute for Functional Medicine. “Cost sharing feels very familiar; you present your card to your provider, but there’s no set network of providers, which is favorable for those seeking more progressive forms of care.” Expanding upon this model, Blue worked with the company to create its Liberty Direct program (LibertyDirect.org). Individuals pay an annual membership fee plus a monthly share amount. After fulfilling their annual unshared amount of out-of-pocket expenses (similar to a deductible), participants’ healthcare costs—including approved naturopathic and alternative treatments—can be submitted as expenses to be shared by the group. Liberty Direct provides financial advantages to DPC practitioners and patients by subsidizing membership fees; it favors nutrition over chronic prescription dependence by reimbursing physician-prescribed nutritional supplement and pharmaceutical expenses under the same terms. Members must be in good health with a lifestyle that helps sustain wellness, including good nutrition, exercise and abstinence from tobacco use and drug and alcohol abuse. The program also accepts approximately 7 percent of applicants on provisional terms when pre-existing condi-

Complementary Care Alternatives to Insurance Cost Less by Meredith Montgomery

T

he latest National Health Interview Survey available, from 2012, shows an annual expenditure of $30.2 billion in out-of-pocket costs for complementary health approaches, benefiting 33 percent of adults and 12 percent of children, and representing about 10 percent of out-ofpocket U.S. healthcare costs. Insurance rarely covers complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in full. As provider networks shrink, premiums rise and the future of healthcare reform remains uncertain, health-conscious consumers yearn for innovative ways to afford this kind of care.

Membership-Based Care

When Dr. Chad Krisel worked at an urgent care center, he saw up to 55 patients a day. Since opening Integrative Family Medicine of Asheville (IntegrativeAsheville.org), in North Carolina, with Dr. Brian Lewis, he averages 12 patients a day. His team provides a membership-based practice in a payment model known as direct primary care (DPC). Endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, DPC is broadly accessible. By applying simplicity, sustainability, quality and collaboration, their integrative practice provides comprehensive care for less than what many pay for phone service. “DPC removes traditional financial incentives and conflicts of interest because membership fees fund us. Our only incentive is to help and heal patients,” Krisel explains. 24

tions such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes can be improved through lifestyle changes. They pay an extra fee per month to cover the cost of a health coach; when they achieve their goals, they become full members paying regular rates. “The economics are staggering,” says Blue, who used to pay $760 a month for insurance with a $12,400 deductible and now pays a monthly share of $449 with a family unshared amount of $1,500. HCSMs are affordable because of restricted overhead budgets. Plus, they appeal to naturalhealth conscious clients and can decline unsuitable applicants. “This concept of communal cost sharing works—Liberty’s share amounts decreased in 2013 and have not changed since,” comments Blue.

insurance. Finding none, in 2014, she created GreenSurance (MyGreenSurance.com). Serving people that proactively care for their health and prefer natural medicine as primary care, GreenSurance developed an evidence-based and science-backed list of 40-plus covered CAM modalities, including thermography, energy therapy, biofeedback, essential oils and homeopathy. It also covers conventional medical and emergency care. Enrollees of the member-owned organization are supplied third-party payer information for provider direct billing once the member’s out-of-pocket amount is met. They use any statelicensed provider and the program is often more affordable than traditional insurance. GreenSurance is currently investing

resources to broaden consumer access to the tax advantages of a health spending account (HSA). H.R. 1752 would allow enrollees in any healthcare-sharing program to open an HSA. “Simply, we’re a co-op whose members empower us to create an exempt program that protects members from ACA penalties and traditional health insurance,” says Gray. “More, we’re a grassroots movement for change.” Krisel notes, “Doctors too, are livid about the current status of America’s healthcare system. Be vocal about what’s important to you. The more voices heard in Washington, the more change we’ll see.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

Told she was past medical hope, Kari Gray, of Kahului, Hawaii, sought to heal from cancer using natural medicine. “When thousands of dollars spent for natural protocols were denied reimbursement by my insurance company, I saw that the system needs to change,” Gray recalls. CAM therapies still deemed “unproven” by traditional insurance companies gave Gray a second chance at life. Following remission, she began a 20-year search for alternative medicine

n “End of Life Mentor,” also referred to as a “Death Doula,” or “Death Midwife”, is a personal resource. This is someone who supports by relieving stress, answering tough questions, interfacing with medical professionals, translating medical lingo, holding space, and/or maybe fills in so that a caregiver can take a deep breath or get a good night’s sleep. This type of mentor will support, guide and nurture all who are involved at the end of a lifetime—including the dying person, their family and other caregivers, if needed. Danielle Dvorak first felt the call to work with those at the end of their lives over 20 years ago. At that time, she shepherded her grandmother through a very difficult last year of life. After that, she spent many years working with various hospices, supporting those who were dying, their caregivers and their families. Her work with cancer patients and other terminally-ill people has included support with reiki, sound/music, gentle touch and anything else needed to relieve stress and uplift those involved. Sometimes this means just sitting and holding a hand and/or listening; other times, this might include running errands, doing laundry, cleaning the kitchen or whatever else will bring relief. Recently, Dvorak completed a training in accompanying the dying, resulting in a certificate that qualifies her as an “End of Life Mentor”. She is truly inspired and wishes to help people find their way through this challenging time, whether they are a caregiver, the family of a loved one who is getting ready to pass on or one facing their own death. With her support and guidance, it is possible to experience peace, beauty and a sense of closure instead of what often occurs when people are unprepared to move through what can be a remarkable time at the ending of a life. Dvorak regularly gives free talks on death and dying in hopes of encouraging people to free themselves of the phobia our culture has developed around these human experiences. Her talks focus on issues such as the history of death and dying, the five most common regrets the dying face, the four things dying people want to say and hear and more.

Treating Pain with New Leaf Massage Therapy

Your Home for Real Estate

ccording to Realtor Carol Nigut, of “Your Home for Real Estate” at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, the Tucson real estate market had a strong recovery in 2016 with home values and prices rising anywhere from 12 to 18 percent. With so much activity, inventory is currently low, but Nigut can help anyone interested in Carol Nigut buying or selling and emphasizes that this is a great time to get a jump on the spring selling season. “The Tucson market recovery is great news for both buyers and sellers. Sellers can anticipate higher purchase prices and fewer days on the market if their homes are priced well,” explains Nigut, “and buyers have a number of terrific down payment assistance programs they can take advantage of. These programs are particularly great for renters who would prefer to own their own homes.” For more information or to schedule a complimentary consultation or Market Analysis of your home, call 520-448-6033, email YourHomeForRealEstate@gmail.com  or visit YourHome4RealEstate.com. M

ost of the time, Don Gibbens from GE Computing works on making people’s computer systems work better, but he has recently added some other services to his business—a Technology Shopper service, Better Than New service and Technology Recycle service. With Technology Shopper service, Gibbens helps clients get just the right equipment needed for home or office. “I listen to you, research your needs, recommend items and purchase them for you,” he says. “As your agent, I purchase your items at cost, plus a small Technology Shopper service charge.” The Better Than New service includes the setup of a new computer—removal of all the “junk” from the manufacturer, the addition of a client’s own files and a total backup. “It needs to have an anti-virus and other utilities to make it function cleanly and quickly. It needs to have your important files returned to it, along with any apps that can be transferred,” explains Gibbens. Technology Recycle service is available for those who wish to bring in old computers and technology. “If we are getting you a new system, we may be able to give you a trade-in,” says Gibbens. “If you have computers and technology in your closet or garage, we can clean it up, remove your data and make it available to others who can use it.” For more information, call 520-332-1485 or visit GEComputerRepair.com. For over 44 years, they have been providing small businesses and family members across the U.S. and Canada with that access. C

loud Nine Flotation has added a second flotation tank, making it the only center in Southern Arizona with more than one tank. For clients, this addition gives the opportunity to enjoy the flotation experience at the same time as a friend and/or loved one. Flotation therapy (sensory deprivation) is done in a large, enclosed tank with 800 pounds of Epsom salts and 10 inches of warm water. The experience is very womblike, and assists in everything from injury recovery, reduced stress and anxiety levels, jet lag, PTSD, TBIs, deeper meditation and more. Numerous athletes—including Tom Brady, Steph Curry, Ally Raisman, The Cubs and The Patriots—use flotation therapy regularly to overcome injury sustained in their sport, and many veterans are finding that it helps with PSTD and TBIs. In September 2015, after a 25-year absence from Tucson, owner Kalyn Wolf had a vision to re-open Cloud Nine Flotation. She also now offers Sound Healing Therapy with Quartz Crystal Singing Pyramids, Reiki and Meditation/Biofeedback with The Muse, a biofeedback device that measures brainwave activity, paired with meditation instruction. Clients can also taste and purchase Gourmet Culinary Salts, unique Himalayan Salt lamps and color therapy glasses in the store. Location: 2118 S. Avenida Planeta, Tucson. businessprofiles Healing Sessions with Shivani Baker

W

ith over 30 years of experience as an Astrologer and Tarot card reader, Shivani Baker has counseled clients on both coasts and now is based in Tucson. She helps her clients through crisis and transitions using these tools and her background in psychology and her spiritual path. An Astrology natal chart, the chart for the date, time and place of birth, gives a tremendous amount of information. It shows talents and creativity, health issues, relationships, children, attitudes about money, Shivani Baker sexual preference, relationships with parents and more. The transits, or where the planets are now in their orbit and how it affects one’s birth chart, show timing of cycles that are coming up for the next year and beyond. This can help greatly with timing of events like marriage, divorce, buying a home, scheduling surgeries and moving. The Tarot cards are a visual tool that works with archetypes, and stirs the subconscious mind, which holds all the answers. The cards work for a more immediate situation and give clarity and insight within a three- to four-month period. “These tools work very well together and I have used both over the years for my clients,” enthuses Baker. “I think of Astrology as a hammer and the Tarot as a saw. They get the job done.” For more information, call 413-313-5677 or email ShivaB01073@gmail.com. See ad, page 25.

EYE OF THE STORM

deteriorated downtown, vacated by commerce, abandoned by political will, ripe for artists to take over. Reads like a tag line for an ‘80s the-kids-are-all-right movie. It happened right here in the Old Pueblo in the days when the zeitgeist was devoted to urbanizing the valley from mountain range to mountain range. Left alone except when the music got too loud or the crowds spilled into the neighborhoods to be corralled by police, a crew led by auteur Steven Eye staged raves in empty warehouses around the railroad tracks. Eye’s mission of uniting creative people around the heart flame of inherent vitality began here. Bookended by his first and second Saturn Return, the Philadelphia transplant applied his art to 54

attract warrior goddess fuel to the heart flame in his new home, the Sonoran Desert. “I came to a land where connecting with the earth, listening and communicating with the spirits that still roam here was available,” Eye recalls. “First I began making warrior goddess mask art to call the spiritual energy to the heart flame.” The combination of urban art spaces and sojourns into desert environs was the furnace and campfire of Eye’s creative path. “Artists needed a center to unite and

gather their forces,” he says. A gallery space was established in an old produce warehouse on Toole Avenue. “The space is where people were safe enough to come out of their inner world—a place to unite and inspire, bringing in culture and ideas.” Eventually what came to be called Solar Culture, the gallery sponsors nonjuried art openings. “The gallery walls are open without judgment, uniting all humans who want to share their art from the heart,” enthuses Eye. Hundreds of artists continue to hang their art in the space, all priced and available. “Hanging art in the gallery enriches the artist life deeply,” Eye says, acknowledging the inherent vitality that fuels the heart flame. Pushed and pulled by the powers of regulatory government, Eye pressed on until the movement he fostered began to meld. The Fenton family of real estate cooperated with Eye to extend the artistic foot print to include 80 different studio spaces around the railroad tracks. “Something happens to an artist when they acquire a studio,” Eye enthuses in his steady, monotone way of speaking. “They become accountable for their talents, their gifts.” Eye’s newest artist space, courtesy of the Fentons, is the Hive, a surplus office building on the City’s Eastside, far from the spaces around the railroad tracks. “The beauty of the Hive is in creating a stable place where a deeper, stronger community can prosper,” Eye explains. “I want to break the old story of artists moving into an area, making it cool, then being squeezed out by gentrification.” The changes commerce has made from brick and mortar to digital, start-up offices to shared spaces, has put pressure to re-imagine office properties. “The Hive is far away from the smell of diesel, the shake and rattle of freight

Steven Eye at Work trains speeding by,” Eye says, standing in the courtyard of Persimmon Trees and stone benches, ripe for becoming a sculpture garden. Over 30 years, the general length of the planet Saturn’s orbit to conjunct with the point on an astrological birth chart, marks three phases of a human lifetime. At the first Return, one establishes and manifests in the world; coinciding with Eye beginning dedicating his life to creating an artist community, giving birth to his progeny of music and art spaces. At his second Return, Eye’s dedication is turning to creating a Burning Man Culture in Tucson. Beginning with annual trips to the Burning Man celebration and influenced by a sojourn to Eastern Europe, Eye’s mission builds on a foundational rock. Experiencing the byzantine architecture of Prague, Czechoslovakia opened Eye to a new artistic direction.

“Doorways, walls, roof cornices filled with sculptures portraying fantastic images,” he recalls. Upon returning to his studio, Eye evolved his art from goddess masks to crypt-like, three-dimensional interactive and immersive spaces. Participating in the Burning Man events and working in the new artistic direction shifted Eye to a new perspective on artistic participation. “My music concerts and art has had an audience, a viewer. Now I’m moving to DJ-ing, where people dance and heal instead of watch,” he says. Eye is breaking the fifth wall, creating engagement between and among the artists and the observers. The proof-viable of his stand came during the recent All Souls event. Eye setup his Burning Man Ascension Temple at the stage where the event does the culminating ceremony. The outpouring of messages scrawled on the walls with chalk proved to be overwhelming to behold. According to Eye, the Burning Man culture he is bringing to Tucson is people uniting to create community, to make something amazing and gifting it without name or ego. His auteur direction is moving through the fifth wall to where users create content, contribute support to the community, without bartering or exchange. The social-cultural movement is in its infancy, exactly where it should be for one entering their third phase of Saturn’s cycle. The next 30 years are legacy years—new seasons of artistic growth. Eye’s heart flame burning inherent vitality uniting creative people, providing space for artists to have spaces to establish themselves on a committed path, making his immersive art continues. Steven Eye can be found at Solar Culture, 31 E. Toole Ave., and The Hive, 326 S. Wilmot, in Tucson. Connect at Info@SolarCulture.org or SolarCulture.org. Functional Medicine for Pets

Why the Best Vets Use It by Shawn Messonnier

M

any pet owners have chosen functional medicine for their own care, so they logically turn to it for their four-legged family members, as well. Most veterinarians are still unfamiliar with this approach to pet health care and may even discourage its use because they see it as being out of synch with conventional ideology. Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging patients and doctors in a partnership designed to improve health. This evolved practice better addresses individual needs than a traditional approach that focuses on illness and treating disease rather than restoring overall health. By shifting from an allopathic platform to a more holistic, patient-centered one, functional medicine addresses the whole pet, not just a set of symptoms.

Ermolaev Alexander/Shutterstock.com

Why Functional Medicine

The system of medicine practiced by most vets is geared toward acute care of a severe trauma or a climax in illness that necessitates urgent diagnosis and treatment. They typically apply specific, prescribed treatments such as drugs or perform surgery to treat the immediate problem or symptom. This approach works well for pets experiencing a crisis, but isn’t appropriate for restoring health when animals have chronic disorders. It also doesn’t help them to at least live comfortably with incurable problems without the side effects often caused by extensive administration of medications. Conventional veterinary science lacks the proper tools for preventing and treating complex, chronic disease. In most cases, it doesn’t take into account an individual’s unique genetic makeup or exposure to toxins such as too many vaccines, drugs or environmental chemicals. Functional medicine always focuses on the unique nature of the patient; there is no “one treatment 56

Tucson

natural awakenings

Referral to a qualified practitioner is needed to help a pet benefit from functional medicine. fits all” mentality. Functional medicine vets are specifically trained to assess the underlying causes of complex, chronic disease and to apply strategies such as nutrition, diet and naturopathic remedies to both treat and prevent these illnesses. They can ably help the increasing number of pets suffering from complex, chronic health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, allergies, arthritis, seizures, bowel and bladder problems and immune system disorders. Functional medicine best addresses these concerns because it involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of ailments and emphasizes customized care. The goal is to promote health as a positive force well beyond the absence of disease. It’s possible for many pets to appear to be healthy while specialized, noninvasive testing shows underlying issues that must be addressed if illness is to be prevented. Conventional medicine either doesn’t offer such testing or ignores minor abnormalities, placing the pet at risk for developing serious and potentially irreversible problems.

Integrative Approach

An integrative, science-based healthcare approach considers interactions in the pet’s history, physiology and lifestyle that might lead to problems. All of the diagnostic and treatment modalities are based upon proven scientific principles and follow evidence-based medicine to yield the best results in terms of total function. Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what are sometimes considered “holistic” or “complementary” healing methods. The focus is on prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets and detoxification programs, using drugs only when necessary as a last, rather than a first, resort. This whole-pet approach allows doctors to choose whichever therapies are best for each patient. Holistic vets see many patients for which conventional medicine has proven ineffective. Sometimes conventional doctors back away from offering treatment, either because the pet is “too old,” the treatment is “too expensive” or the results are unlikely to be “satisfactory.” Functional medicine can help many of these so-called hopeless cases, return pets to health and often heal disease after principles of functional medicine have been consistently applied to the pet’s everyday lifestyle. Finding a functional medicine vet is challenging, but worth the effort. Focusing on the individual needs of a pet ensures the optimum chance for achieving and sustaining proper health. Shawn Messonnier, a doctor of veterinary medicine practicing in Plano, TX, is the author of The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats and Unexpected Miracles: Hope and Holistic Healing for Pets.
