Health Briefs Citrus for Heart Health

A common flavanone called hesperidin found in citrus fruit may help protect against heart disease, according to a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in Current Developments in Nutrition. Researchers analyzed 12 studies involving 589 participants that examined the effects of hesperidin extracts on various outcomes, such as inflammatory markers, body mass index, insulin resistance and lipids. After accounting for variability across the groups of participants, researchers found that hesperidin significantly reduced both total cholesterol and lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) in obese individuals under age 50 that consumed approximately 500 milligrams per day of hesperidin for more than six weeks. It also had a positive impact on inflammatory markers, insulin sensitivity and fasting blood glucose. Beneficial effects were not noted on other risk factors of heart disease, such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good” cholesterol), triglycerides, body mass index and blood pressure. Hesperidin can be found in oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruit, in whole fruit or juice form and in commercially available supplements. Consuming grapefruit might interfere with certain medications for heart disease, so patients should consult with their doctor before making any dietary changes.

Why Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment?

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is a powerful healing tool whose time has come. Oxygen drives every healing response in the body. What is one of the first things that is typically administered to a patient coming into the ER with a serious medical condition? Oxygen. Hyperbaric conditions (being under increased atmospheric pressure) enhance the oxygen carrying capacity of blood by dissolving oxygen bubbles into plasma, the fluid part of blood. At 1.5 atmospheres of pressure (.5 atmospheres above ambient pressure or the pressure of being about 16 feet underwater), breathing 100 percent medical oxygen, oxygen carrying capacity is 700 percent of normal. A hyperbaric oxygen treatment involves getting into a chamber that pressurizes and wearing a mask that delivers 100 percent oxygen. Time in the chamber is approximately an hour. Most conditions require 40 sessions. Extra oxygen can help: improve cellular and mitochondrial function; trigger the release of stem cells from bone marrow; fight infection; drive detoxification; fight inflammation; modify gene expression (more than 8,300 genes have been studied); up-regulate healing processes and down-regulate inflammatory and degenerative processes. Categorically, while the liver opens to the soul window of the eyes, the heart opens to the tongue. Sometimes stuttering can be a component of emotional tension by not being able to speak clearly from the heart—thus, abdicating heart-felt expression.

A

s a 5,000-year-old art that was once an oral tradition handed down many generations, the principles of Chinese Medicine were memorized like poetry through songs. The threads that connect the web of layered anatomy and fluid physiology has its root in observing how the body interfaces not only with natural surroundings, but also the inner wilderness of the psychological landscape. There is a phrase, “home is where the heart is,” and in Chinese Medicine the heart is the palace where the Spirit resides. When a person has “good Shen” it means that one’s heart is in harmony and at home in the world and sleeps well. Archetypally, the heart represents the great controller in the office of the Emperor/Empress and when emotionally balanced, is a positive sovereign personal authority.

In the Five Element tradition, the heart is representative of the Fire element. Resonant patterns that go with the heart are the color of red, odor of burnt, sound of laughter and the emotion of joy. Calibrated by the thyroid and protected by the pericardium, the heart is tireless in rhythm and flow. Interestingly, the small intestine has an intimate relationship to the heart as both advisor and processor of massive nutritional components. In fact, when one part of the heart tissue is damaged, so is a part of the small intestine and vise-versa.

The Vagus Nerve in Therapeutic Practice by Ann Baldwin, PhD

What is your book about? The vagus nerve is a key communication pathway between the mind and the body. The heart, gut and other organs use it to inform the brain of their status; the brain uses it to calm and rebalance the organs, like an antidote to the fight-or-flight response. It also helps digestion, improves immune function and releases acetylcholine, an anti-inflammatory agent. But, when you become too stressed, it can’t do its job properly. That’s why we need techniques to help it work better. This book describes those techniques. Some you can do on your own, and others use therapies such as biofeedback, massage and aromatherapy, or group activities such as laughter yoga, singing and chanting. This book is for people who want help with managing stress and for therapists who want additional ways to provide that help by including vagus stimulation.

Why did you write this book? This book was inspired by students at the University of Arizona who took my course, Physiology of Mind-Body Interactions. One student said, “As a class we navigated through the beginning of COVID in Spring of 2020. We all made good use of the breathing techniques you taught during that confusing time. How Relationships Shape Our Health by Ana Tanase

W

hen thinking about improving health, the more obvious things that come to mind are nutrition, exercise, maybe sunshine or avoiding toxins. We don’t always appreciate the role the people surrounding us have in shaping who we are, increasing our stress or comforting us. The minute we are born, we are placed into the context of our families. The contact with our immediate family has a great impact in our brain development, how our neurons wire for connection in the years to come. This imprint of our parents or primary caretakers determines our attachment style for the rest of our lives. The best attachment style is called secure attachment, which happens between a reliable and attuned parent and a child that will trust the people around them, have a secure base to launch into life and trust themselves that they are worthy of love and positive relationships. On the other hand, if children grow up in environments with conflict, parents suffering from mental health problems or who had insecure attachments themselves, they develop ambivalent, disordered or avoidant pattern styles. With an ambivalent attachment, children are clingy and overly dependent on others, reluctant to develop close relationships. As Dr. Segal describes, attachment styles can correlate with resilience later in life: “It’s been shown repeatedly that children with histories of secure attachment are less vulnerable to stress and better

able to take advantage of opportunities for growth.” The way we learn how to relate to others is a lifelong process and does not end with childhood. According to the influential ego psychologist Erickson, our psychosocial development continues to be molded by our experiences in the social environment until death. At different ages we are faced with new lessons to learn. For example, the task of young adulthood is to learn how to develop intimate and loving relationships with others. Failure to achieve this step will lead to isolation and loneliness. The longest study of human happiness was performed by a group of researchers at Harvard University. The study gathered health records of 724 participants in different socioeconomic levels and tracked them for 85 years. The researchers reviewed health records, asked thousands of questions to the participants and people around them and took hundreds of measurements. The study looked at career achievement, wealth, exercise, diets and many other details. The study has found a strong association between happiness and close relationships like spouses, family, friends and social circles. The good news is that the best things in life are free, and as long as we are open to learn and work on self-improvement, it is never too late to develop strong positive relationships. Some may experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and left arm, back or jaw pain. and walked off into the world, and I’ll never know how his day or his life were going—whether he was sad or disappointed or supremely content. But what I do know is this: I had one of those tiny moments where we’re given a choice to either expand or contract, and I contracted. Was it a big deal? So many other people would say something more important or clever or meaningful…” Blah blah blah. Yet we are often surprised and tickled at what ensues when we do choose to say something. I love the idea of learning courage by couraging. Building the habit of looking for where I can sprinkle a little wonder and love will have less attention on boring, always-too-much-to-do me, and more attention on the gifts I’m able to give here and there. Like the other morning in Whole Foods, the woman standing in line in front of me was rockin’ the most spectacular specs I’ve seen in a while. As she moved to the next open register, I called out, “Those glasses are awesome!” She turned her head, looked a little surprised, then flashed a megawatt smile that lit up the whole damn store. “Thank you!” she said, and she threw those shoulders back a bit and drew some admiring looks from the shoppers around us.

What is holistic cardiology?

It’s about treating the whole person— body, mind, emotions and spirit. If you have a tree with sick fruit on it, you can keep cutting off the branches, or you can ask, what does the tree need? Does it need more sunlight or water? How is the soil? Does it have minerals? With patients, the question we should be asking is why does someone have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease? And then you ask, what is the soil of a human life made of? That soil is made of micro and macro nutrients, physical activity, having a purpose in life, joy and a good night’s sleep. At our center we call these the pearls of health.

How do you diagnose people by listening to their stories?

We know through research that relationships between patients and physicians affect outcome. People who bond with their physicians have lower cholesterol or blood sugar levels because they’re more likely to be compliant with medications. We also know that events don’t happen in isolation. When people have major, life-changing events—death of a spouse or child, divorce—all of a sudden, they start having cancer, sudden death and heart attacks.

So, when I look at someone that had a heart attack, I don’t just want to know about their symptoms the day of the attack. I also want to know what was going on six months before, because that’s where you find the story. “I’ve been under stress. I lost my job. I lost my house. My wife told me they wanted a divorce.” This is where you start to get the stories that add up to the ultimate cardiovascular event.

How do you translate that inquiry into the healing journey?

Everyone needs something different at a different point in their life. Some people need to change what they’re eating or start walking, but then you have to look at why they’re not taking care of their physical body. Depressed people say, “I have 20 friends in this pack of cigarettes.” They don’t say, “Let me eat Brussels sprouts and take a walk.” I have to deal with the underlying issue, which could be things like depression, stress or loneliness. I also want to know my patient’s spirituality, because if they believe in a higher power, we can tap into that to give them strength and help transform what’s going on.

What tools do you have in your integrative medical arsenal?

The whole framework of integrative medicine is to understand and use the wisdom of other global healing traditions. For a


patient with back pain, I may use healing touch, acupuncture, massage and medication. I may send somebody who is stressed to transcendental meditation training. I may pull from Ayurveda to help people with digestive issues. The most important thing is looking at your life and finding joy, meaning, purpose, looking at where you can serve, where you can connect. This is the piece that is missing in many people’s lives. Also, look at where you are holding onto anger. Have you done your forgiveness work? How can you begin to practice gratitude?

Why do you say that patients are motivated not by fear but by caring?

They’re motivated by love. Love is the secret ingredient. People will do everything for three months after a heart attack because they’re terrified, and then they go back to their old ways. They start to gain weight because they never did the deep work to look at what got them there in the first place. A perfect example is one of my heart patients who came in with a walker. She said she had sciatica, and immediately we gave her a shot for her pain. We also did some acupuncture. I got a beautiful message from her the next day, which made no mention of the shot or the acupuncture. As people are becoming more conscious of the impact their food choices have on their health and the planet, plant-based milk has turned into a mainstay in most grocery stores. Touting sustainability benefits, a creamy texture and pleasing flavors, soy, oat, almond, cashew and even macadamia nut milks are having their moment.

According to the Good Food Institute, 41 percent of American households purchased plant-based milk in 2022. Most major milk brands, such as Nestlé, are offering plant-based alternatives, while specialty companies like Elmhurst 1925 and Eden Foods are continually expanding their selection. “Plant-based dairy is now more than 15 percent of the milk industry,” says Elysabeth Alfano, co-founder and CEO of VegTech Invest, a firm that manages the

Plant-based dairy alternatives have differing nutritional advantages, and it is best for consumers to make their own comparison. “Soy and pea milk—the protein superstars of plant milks—contain some fat and, when fortified, are an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D,” Wolfram explains. “Hemp has a little less protein, and oat and almond milks are very low in protein. Hemp milk is rich in ALA [alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plants]. Nondairy milks may or may not contain added sugars and fats or be fortified, so it is best to check the nutrition facts panel to see what levels of nutrients each specific product contains.” Ultimately, the best plant-based dairy may be the one we love to consume. “Enjoyment and taste are highly subjective experiences,” Wolfram says. “I encourage folks to try different options and find what they like.”

Lowering Our Battery Footprint

Although alkaline batteries may legally be thrown out in the regular trash because they fall below federal hazardous waste standards, conscientious citizens recycle them when that option is available, as they contain dangerous elements, including lead. Button cell batteries used in watches and garage door openers contain tiny amounts of mercury and should be recycled. Rechargeable batteries should be taken to a local recycling facility that specializes in batteries.

mericans love their disposable batteries. Every year, they buy and discard about 3 billion of these small-sized power sources that keep cellphones, flashlights, toys and computer accessories running. Lithium-ion and alkaline batteries dominate the market due to their efficiency and versatility. While single-use batteries significantly tax the environment, advancements in production, lifespan and recycling can lead to a greener future. It isn’t easy to create batteries. For one thing, minerals must be extracted from the Earth. Lithium-rich brine is pumped into evaporation ponds, and after the water evaporates, the concentrated brine is processed to harvest the metal. This practice can lead to the contamination of local ecosystems and water basins, toxic emissions and respiratory issues for people living nearby.

While sending any item to a landfill is problematic, batteries are especially complicated because they are made with toxic elements such as cadmium, lead, nickel and electrolytes, as well as other chemicals, all of which can leach into the soil and water system. In addition, lithium can ignite and release chemicals into the air. According to Heal The Planet, Americans create 180,000 tons of hazardous waste from batteries annually, including 86,000 tons from alkaline batteries and 160 million cellphone batteries.

“Sustainability is everything for battery manufacturers, despite what a lot of people think,” says Chris Groves, manager at Groves Batteries and the proprietor of TITAN Lithium. “Recycling is imperative to a sustainable market, as recycled materials can be put back into production chains at a lower cost.” A broad-ranging solution is a circular battery economy: a model of production and consumption that extends the life of a battery and its components as long as possible by sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling its materials.

ELECTRONIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION

Fourteen percent of new cars sold in 2022 were electric, up from less than 5 percent in 2020. By 2030 there will be between 145 and 230 million electric vehicles (EV) on the road. The federal government requires manufacturers to warranty that EV batteries will maintain at least 70 percent capacity for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles. Because EVs are relatively new, the average life expectancy of their batteries is not yet known. However, each time an EV battery is charged and discharged, it loses some capacity and eventually will need to be replaced. Recycling old EV batteries will help keep up with demand and reduce their environmental impact. A report from the International Energy Agency estimates


that by 2040, recycled quantities of copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt from spent EV batteries could reduce supply requirements for these minerals by about 10 percent. Most retired EV batteries still have some storage and energy capabilities, even if they are not at their original power levels. Alternative uses for old batteries are being explored, including solar power storage, energy for streetlights or as backup generators in homes. One study in Nature Communications predicts that short-term power grid storage demand could be met by 2030 across most regions using old EV batteries.

ADVANCES IN BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Solutions for more sustainable batteries are being explored. “New chemistries are focused on using non-rare earth materials like sodium or sulfur, which we have in abundance and are a lot less damaging than lithium mines to extract,” says Groves. Iron-air batteries are currently being developed as energy storage. They are ten times cheaper than lithium batteries and use iron, one of Earth’s most abundant resources. Lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries could be the only battery a car will ever need. They have a range of more than 600 miles on a single charge and a potential 2.4-million-mile lifetime. Solid-state batteries use lithium, but they generate more power and can take up to seven times more charges in their lifetime without the risk of explosion.

Everyone can help make the most of their batteries with a few simple practices. Disposable Batteries: Turn off devices and remove the batteries when they are not in use. Store batteries so they are not in contact with each other in a place that is below 72°F, but above freezing. Who is Mandy Patinkin? An American treasure, Patinkin was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He got his start singing as a child in the synagogue choir, and his acting debut in high school in the play “Anything Goes”. Patinkin attended the University of Kansas and the Juilliard School of Drama. In 1980, in his Broadway debut, he won a Tony award as Che Guevarra in “Evita”. A Renaissance person, Patinkin has transitioned his success from Broadway into television and movie stardom.

What was the genesis of your career in show business?

I hated school. School had nothing for me; I couldn’t stand it. The teacher would call my parents and say, “I know he can do it, he must just be lazy,” but I was really just bored. When I was seven years old, my parents put me in the boys’ choir at a synagogue on the south side of Chicago. I would sing with the cantor in the temple, and then the little old ladies would come up and pinch me on the cheek and say, “Oh, you’re so adorable.” I think it was the first time I got any positive reinforcement for anything that I did. In high school, my mother had given up on me. I was talking a lot in the mirror at home, and she suggested that I go to the neighborhood youth center to act in one of their plays. I told her, “You don’t know me at all—I’m not doing any plays.” Then I was at South Shore High School in fifth period lunch, and a high school football player walked up to me and said, “You know we’re doing some plays at the youth center, and we’re short some guys—what do you think?” And I said, “Sounds great to me.”

I went over there, and I got cast in the play, “Anything Goes”. A wonderful man named Bob Kondor, who ran a costume shop in Chicago, did the pro bono work of running the after-school theater and drama program for the kids, and it changed my life. I was there every minute for the rest of my high school days and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do for the rest of my life.

What are the highlights of your upcoming show at the Fox Theatre?

Me being there and being alive. I leave the highlights column for the audience members, for whatever they want to walk away remembering. The whole experience is a highlight for me.

At the end of 2021, after the pandemic shut the entire world down for years, I got together with Adam Ben-David, my piano player, and asked him, “What do you think about going back on the road? Are you up for that?” and he said “Yeah.” I told him, “I want to do something fun. I want to welcome myself back. I want everyone to have fun. We all need to be together again. Everyone’s been isolated, sitting at home on their couch.” To create a new show, we went through 13 to 14 hours’ worth of material and started putting together material that was entertaining and fun. That’s how we built it. In 2022, we did a few west coast gigs to oil it up. Then in January of 2023, we hit the road and started doing it everywhere. I love being on the move and the privilege of bringing music to people. When I started out, I never imagined that I would think of myself as someone with a service job. I’m not the genius who writes the songs, I’m just the mailman. We only have a finite amount of time to enjoy our precious lives. That’s why I called it “Being Alive”—because I don’t think there’s anything more wonderful on this planet than the privilege of being alive.

What made you say “yes” to playing the world’s greatest detective in the Hulu Network murder mystery series “Death and Other Details”?

I read the script, then I gave it to the smartest people I know—my wife, Kathryn Grody, my son Gideon Patinkin and my son’s writing partner, Ewen Wright. After I read it, I thought “wow”. This thing seems like fun, and I was looking for something fun, something not heavy. They agreed, so I called the producers up and told them, “I’m in.”

You recently turned 71, and you could rest on your laurels with all that you’ve achieved. What do you hope to bring forth in your personal life and career in the next decade?

In the next decade I hope to be reflective. A

priority is to spend lots of wonderful time with my grandson, who will be two years old on February 5th, with my new grandchild who will be born in August, and with my family, friends and loved ones. Careerwise, I’m busy collaborating with opera star Nathan Gunn on a new show—we’re in the process of finessing it right now. We also made a television pilot written by my son and his writing partner Ewen created for Showtime called “Seasoned”. It was a casualty of the strike, and so Showtime let it go, along with many other projects, but we own it, the pilot and the scripts we wrote. The good news is that Showtime was not the right home, so we’re looking for a new home that will be the right home as soon as Hollywood gets cooking and learns to walk again.

You mentioned you have a twoyear-old grandson. What do you enjoy about being a grandfather?

His name is Jude, like “Hey Jude”. We go for walks, and recently he saw snow for the first time. Everything is a wonder to him. He calls me “Gramps”. I have a Lionel model train set, and he says, “Gramps, let’s play trains, trains, trains!” He has a great sense of humor. There’s nothing that I love more than a sense of humor. That’s what has kept my wife and I together for the last 3,000 years. The significant difference between being a grandparent and being a parent is that when you’re a parent, you’re so busy feeling like their life is in your hands. You worry about everything—you’ve gotta keep them alive. As a grandparent your job is to shut up, don’t say anything of a critical nature to the parents, don’t give any advice and just enjoy them. So you’re completely free to witness all of the things that you probably missed with your own kids. He’s a pistol. I’m loving, loving, loving it!

What’s the best advice anyone has given to you? “Have fun,” spoken by my dearest friend on his death bed. It’s a lot easier said than

done. And another one I use during my daily prayer meditation, “I did the best I could.”

Do you have a favorite quote?

I have two. The first is by e.e. cummings: “To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.” The other one is by Shakespeare from Hamlet: “A thought which quarter’d hath but one part wisdom and three parts coward.”

Why should people come to see your "Being Alive" show?

I’ve been very privileged to do the work I love in a variety of different areas in the entertainment field. Out of all that I’ve been able to do, the live concert venue is hands down my favorite. It’s a reservoir of expression and material vaster than all of the oceans put together. You can find things to sing and it’s always different, even if you’ve sung it a hundred times, because it’s going through the filter of the moment. I love doing this, and I love being with the audience. Please, please, if you have nothing to do, come. You can go to sleep if you’re bored, or if you hate it, leave. I promise you I will give you everything I have. I love doing it more than anything I’ve been allowed to do on the planet. T

hrough the ages, various substances and lifestyle changes have been touted as panaceas, but even in our modern world there is one unexpected soulelixir that might rival the others—the human hug. Virginia Satir, a pioneer in family therapy, is famous for saying, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Even hugging a pet or stuffed animal can lower blood pressure, take the edge off pain and curb the effects of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines. During a hug, preferably the 20-second variety, we can experience a drop in anxiety, thanks to a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol and a friendly burst of the bonding hormone oxytocin. Hugging our spouse, a friend or someone after church can ward off the common cold while helping us feel less alone in a big world.

Hugging is a language unto itself, showing others that they matter. Too often, we postpone physical contact, rushing out the door on the way to work. Couples sometimes reserve embraces only as a prelude to intimacy. Children can be deprived of hugs because of generational and cultural reservation. In the end, most of us don’t have enough healthy, non-sexual touch, which can contribute to loneliness, depression and feelings of separateness. Whether we are born huggers or hug-phobic and warming up to the practice, lifting our arms to express affection or support another person can prove that there are safe places indeed. Here are a few suggestions to add hugs to the day.
