elcome to our first digital-only issue of Natural Nutmeg! Over the last year, we’ve been looking for ways to become more environmentally friendly as well as offer our readers more content on our website than we are able to do through our print magazine. We’ve had both positive and negative response to a digital only issue, but we believe that it will allow us more flexibility and we can provide up to the minute information and events for the holistic community.

However, in reading some of the negative responses, I was prompted to think about why we engage in negative thinking while I was writing this publisher’s letter.

Sometimes we do not even realize that we are spending most of our time in negative thought processes because we are so used to saying the same things to ourselves over and over. We get used to hearing the same negative self-talk and it becomes our normal state. But if we check in with how we’re feeling (happy, joyful, excited vs. sad, angry or depressed) we know immediately whether we’re in a positive or negative thought process. I read a wonderful book by Steve Sisgold entitled, “What’s Your Body Telling You”. He has a simple technique that he teaches called the self-evident truth (SET), in which you place your full attention on your physical and emotional body and pick up feelings and sensations that you may not have been aware of before. You’ll notice any tension or strain in your body, any uneasiness in any part of your body and what your breathing is like. This is a great way to determine how you are feeling at any time of day.

If you are cut off from your emotions or feelings, they will eventually manifest as a physical symptom or disease. We all know that stress is the number one cause of many chronic diseases, but what is stress a result of? Either suppressing your emotions completely or spending most of the time focusing on negative emotions. Until we can express, feel and appreciate our emotions, they will block our energy and we will be unable to live in a healthy state at our fullest capacity. Once we understand that we can control our emotions by monitoring our thoughts and staying in the present moment, then we can fulfill our true destiny.

We can definitely master this game with conscious effort over time. The first step is to appreciate that your experience in life has nothing to do with the external events that happen to you. In other words, nothing in life has any meaning unless you give meaning to it. That’s why the same event can happen to two different people and they may each have a drastically different response to it. If you watch people driving, you’ll see this example played out on a daily basis. It’s a choice and there’s always a choice. It’s the choice you make that determines the kind of life you have. It’s taken me a long time to realize that and still sometimes I forget. But when I do remember, it’s an absolutely amazing feeling because it gives you total control over how your life plays out.

You truly choose your path in this life, but you must make a decision to be disciplined and determined about monitoring your thoughts and emotions. Most people are unwilling to pay this price as it is work that must be consistently done on a daily basis. Emotion is energy in motion; it’s up to you in what direction it moves.

Hill-Stead Museum Receives Funding From Connecticut Humanities For The 2014 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival

T

he Hill-Stead Museum is thrilled to announce that it is a recipient of a public presentation implementation grant from Connecticut Humanities for the Museum’s 2014 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival.

This year marks the 21st year of the Festival, a renowned literary and music series for poetry fans from across the state and New England each summer in the museum’s beautiful Sunken Garden. The performance series has featured nationally-recognized and awardwinning poets including Billy Collins, Yusef Komunyakaa, Maxine Kumin, C.K. Williams and Grace Paley, and has drawn annual audiences of more than 5,000. Committed to nurturing the art of poetry locally and nationally, Hill-Stead also sponsors an annual high school poetry competition and, in partnership with Tupelo Press, an annual adult poetry competition. The work of winners at each level is highlighted during the Festival. The 2014 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival dates and events will be announced this spring.

Ecotherapy: Just What the Doctor Ordered

T

he connection between the environment and our health cannot be overstated, and modern medicine is finally starting to prove it. There is a growing body of research that indicates that interaction with nature can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, improve memory and moods, and contribute overall to greater psychological and physical well-being.

Amelia’s Story: Learning From Our Animals

I

became a believer in our ability to communicate with animals after Amelia Kinkade, who while sitting in California, told me via an email that she was seeing through the eyes of our lost cat, Boo Boo. She went on in detail about the house and yard and where the cat was hiding. The next morning I went out and rescued Boo Boo from the exact place Amelia had described to me the day before.

From that day on I learned that when in doubt to simply ask myself WWAD, or What Would Amelia Do? One of my biggest problems is mentally going into a place of fear when one of our pets is missing or acting strangely, as I know that interferes with my ability to communicate. I tend to try and force them to do my will by every means available to me or I go into my head and decide what the animal is thinking — neither of which ever works—instead of asking WWAD and resolving the issue.

My first experiment, after becoming a believer, was to try and find out why our beloved house rabbit Smudge Elizabunny would allow my wife to walk out into the front yard, pick her up and bring her into the house each evening while, when I attempted to do it, she would run around for ten or fifteen minutes until I finally caught up with her.

Smudge began her day by running out our pet door every morning and spending the day in our fenced-in front yard with our other creatures. So my first WWAD was to step out into our front yard the next evening and in my head ask, “Why don’t you let me pick you up the way you let my wife Bobbie do it?’

The unexpected answer, which for me verifies it is coming from the animal and not my head, was, ‘You don’t treat the cats that way.’ I realized she treated my wife differently because I was the zookeeper and guardian. My wife brought her treats more often and rarely forced her to come inside.

When I went on to ask what she meant by that Smudge explained that I don’t make the cats come in at any specific time, but give them the freedom to go in and out until my bed time. I then explained that the cats could defend themselves should a predator get into the yard and I was worried about Smudge being out late when it grew dark.

With those words Smudge hopped over and let me pick her up and every day thereafter. I will admit some days she would smile at me and remind me of the old days for a minute or two but I could tell it was just her sense of humor. And when I had appointments I could go out into the yard and tell her I needed to leave the house and would feel better if she would come in. She always hopped right over when she knew I had a schedule to keep. When Smudge died Amelia told me she would be with Rose, who loved her. Little did Amelia know my Mom’s name was Rose and she died shortly after Smudge...and I know they are together again sharing stories about me.

I also have two outdoor cats at our son’s house, Eanie and Meanie.

Since the only time I can count on seeing them is in the morning when I serve them breakfast, I made an appointment with our veterinarian for an early morning visit. For one week neither cat showed up for breakfast and so I called the vet to cancel the appointment and not waste his time. The next morning, bright and early, the two cats were sitting and waiting for breakfast to be served.

Our cats Miracle, Penny, Dickens and Gabriel read my mind also.

Their names are no coincidence. Miracle was named after a cat that appeared in a dream to one of my cancer patients and said, “My name is Miracle and this is the cancer treatment protocol you should follow”.

The cat then gave her the details, which her oncologist agreed to, and she is well today. So our next rescued cat became Miracle. Miracle is just that. She thinks she is a dog. She is fearless, so I entered her in a dog show. The next year someone posted a notice, “This dog show is for dogs only”. By the way, the neighbors treat you with caution after they hear and see you running around your house yelling ‘Miracle’ at the top of your lungs.

Penny was named by a child who saw her being born and said she looked like a penny. A Penny is to remind us that we have Liberty and In God We Trust. Dickens and Gabriel remind me that if God is at my front door the devil is at my back door and to remain aware of both aspects of my existence. I groom them all every week; toe nails, teeth, fur, hair ball medication and more. Whenever I think about doing it they all disappear. It is my way of testing our ability to communicate.

If, however, five minutes later, I think about going down the hall to get something from my home office I have to step over them to get to my desk.

Last year I went shopping with our two dogs Furphy, a Lhasa Apso (who thinks our house is his Tibetan Monastery and insists on running the show), and Buddy, a Griffon mix (who loves to chase anything that moves from a squirrel to an oil truck). The car we all got into was a new minivan with all the remote control door mechanisms on the key. After shopping I returned to the car and was horrified to see the side door was open due to my accidentally hitting the key. Buddy, whom I was worried most about, was sitting in the car while Furphy was no where to be seen. My first reaction was panic as I began to run around calling out his name and searching the areas around the parking lot. Then I suddenly realized you are not doing what Amelia taught you and so I asked myself WWAD? I then quieted down and went into Furphy’s head to find out what he was thinking and immediately realized he was searching for me, as he always does, and that he was probably at the front desk of the market with them asking over the loud speaker, ‘Whose dog is this?’ I say

that because after attending Amelia’s workshop at Omega, Furphy was not let into the dining hall during the lunch break. I left him at the back door and he always waits for me to come out...but not this time. A man came through the hall, with Furphy in his arms, asking whose dog it was. Apparently Furphy had run around to the front door and into the hall searching for me. He won over everyone’s heart and they let him stay.

Anyway, as I approached the front of the supermarket I saw a security guard sitting in his car. As I approached, he lowered the driver’s window and asked, “Are you looking for a dog?’ I answered yes and he said, ‘Here he is on the front seat with air conditioning, water and treats.’ The guard went on to tell me he saw Furphy walking towards the front of the market and didn’t want him to be hit by a car so he picked him up. Furphy followed me back to the car and we have never had that problem again.

I may add that both Furphy and Buddy adopted me; Furphy by running out and grabbing my leg when I visited the shelter, and Buddy by sending me a message. I had written a story about a dog named Buddy when I heard a voice tell me one morning, to go to the animal shelter. I listened to the voice and went down there with Furphy, and as we walked in a volunteer was holding a dog in her lap. I asked something I have never asked before, ‘What’s his name?’ Of course the answer was ‘Buddy’ and home he came with me. My wife is very forgiving and accepting and adopts us all!

Now to explain the reason I was surprised at who stayed in the car and who left, is that after adopting Buddy from the animal shelter I could never get him to get into a car and he even jumped out of the car once when I stopped for gas. At home, if I didn’t have him on a leash, getting him into the car was a frustrating, time consuming experience. Finally one day I thought WWAD? I then calmed myself and asked Buddy why he wouldn’t get in the car. I was amazed at his answer. He said the woman who owned him was very nice but when her husband came home from work she would ask him to take Buddy for a walk. Buddy went on to say, “He would put me in the car and then drive to a bar and leave me in the car. When he came out he would be abusive because of his drinking and just take me home and never let me out of the car. So getting into a car scares me and reminds me of all the abuse I received.”

From that day on his disobedience ended.

We now understood each other and quickly worked it out to where Buddy now loves the car because he knows we are always going out to share the day. He loves to chase moving things in the woods near our home but I never have to worry about his not coming home. And, when I open the side door of the car, before I can say, “Jumpee upee”, he is in the front seat raring to go.

The other day I drove off thinking they were both in the car, but after a half mile I turned to look in the back of the car and saw only Buddy. I immediately connected with Furphy and told him I was sorry and coming

home. I turned around and drove home knowing Furphy would be sitting in the driveway, giving me that ‘boy-are-you-a-dumbbell’ look that God’s complete creations give to we incomplete human beings. It is a look I got from the cats, too, when I used to accidentally lock them out over night Now I take attendance every evening before I get into bed to be sure all our kids are in the house and no one is locked out. My hope is you will let Amelia open your minds and increase your communication skills so you won’t get that look from the animals anymore. With time and training I even get along better with people, too—an added benefit!

Who Stole Our Retirement?

y father worked at his company for 45 years. Now 82 years old, he still enjoys a healthy pension that provides for him and my mom. Today, if you are one of the 10,000 people turning age 65 each day, your future is likely going to be very different. In fact for most of the middle class, traditional retirement is dead. So what happened? Who stole our retirement? And could something good actually come out of all of this?

First, a little history. Who invented retirement? If the question sounds absurd, consider: in traditional societies, and until recently most modern ones, there’s no such thing as retirement or retirement planning. Things were pretty simple: when you got old, you depended on your family, band, or village to take care of you.

The first groups of “pension” recipients were soldiers. From Roman through Revolutionary times, parcels of conquered or surplus land were often given to retiring veterans. The social and personal benefits of turning warriors into farmers are pretty obvious. I like the almost poetic circularity of this approach – since nearly all of those soldiers were farmers to begin with.

Regular cash payments eventually replaced these ways and the modern pension was born. Over time it evolved to cover widows and retirees across all kinds of industries and government. The concept of the pension became nearly universal on August 14, 1935, when Social Security was established as a federal supplement to other pension plans.

Although it’s nice to think everyone who worked for companies “back in the day” made out as well as my father, even at their peak pensions didn’t cover everyone, and the benefits they paid weren’t always adequate. But on top of any financial rewards, pensions offered a reassuring continuity with the past. In the age of the mass society, social organizations took on the old role of the family.

Then the 401(k) came along. It was almost an accident at first, a clever way to exploit a loophole in the tax code. First gradually, then rapidly, it took off. Lured by the novelty and greed of the stock market, some employees (just a few of the most savvy and insistent) clamored for control of their own retirement money to seek the promised land of greater wealth.

A few smart employers also smelled opportunity, relishing the chance to escape from the long-term financial obligation of pensions. Removing those future liabilities from the balance sheet meant near-term bonuses and stock appreciation for a small minority of the most senior employees and shareholders. It wasn’t long until the financial industry jumped in to join the party. The whole experience was very much in the spirit of the 1980s and 90s, and seemed like a great idea at the time.

Today 401(k) assets total something north of 20 trillion dollars.

The impacts on society, the financial world, and government have been enormous. With the increase in the amount of money that has come into these Defined Contribution Plans (which together are called 401 (k) 403 (b) and 457 plans) fees inside of these plans have dropped for the employees but that has had a cost as well. The current lack of support for the employees enrolling in these plans, and advice on investing in these plans, has all but disappeared. So instead of a future of choice, control, and prosperity, the great shift has left us disconnected, depersonalized, and full of fear. What went wrong?

In essence, we traded security for money. We sold out – or got sold out. Retirement income for most people today has little connection to the employer, or society, or anyone else. It’s just numbers in an account. No one besides you is responsible for your wellbeing, apart from a limited “fiduciary responsibility” that basically means financial providers and employers aren’t supposed to misuse or waste your money. How bad have things become when laws must be enacted to keep employees’ own money safe from their employers?

But the deal has been done. And now that our future depends on managing money, we are all investors. We’re told that if things go wrong, it’s our fault. The problem is that financial markets do go wrong, all the time. Riding the investment roller coaster is a grueling business even for the most conscientious financial professionals, much less ordinary folks.

If this weren’t unsettling enough, we have to keep on managing our money after we retire. So we worry about investing well enough

to avoid running out of money. Should I buy an annuity, or invest in large cap, international, or floating-rate bonds? Find an advisor I can trust? Or just hope for the best? These are not decisions most people should have to make. The prospect drives reasonable people to say things like “I’m just planning to die young so I won’t have to deal with it.”

These fears add up to a lingering dread that sucks the promise from our future and the joy from our present. And so there’s a spiritual impact as well. Like an unpaid debt to ourselves, concern about the future takes us away from the moment.

Spiritual teachers tell us the moment is the only true reality, the only time we’re fully alive, and the only path to fulfillment. It’s also a pretty tough place to be. The truth hurts as much as it heals. So we distract ourselves, make excuses, run away. Modern life seems designed to steal our consciousness from the present. Worrying about having enough money to live in retirement makes it even more difficult to truly live, right now or after we retire. And by staking our entire future happiness on events in the artificial world of money, we set up a massive gravitational pull away from the real world. We spin helplessly away from knowing and being our true selves.

Even while we sense it’s unwise, many of us would still be tempted to accept this spiritual debt if the financial side paid well enough. But something went wrong with the money, too. On the brink of retirement, the Baby Boom is looking at a savings gap on the order of ten trillion dollars. Forbes calls it “the greatest retirement crisis in American history.”

There are plenty of reasons: imprudent investments, greater longevity, an ill-timed recession, incessant inflation, and especially inadequate savings. Sadly, the biggest reason might be fallout from “the great takeaway” I’ve just outlined.

Employers who have successfully offloaded long-term financial commitments to our future don’t want to spend a penny more than they have to on our wellbeing. The ancient wisdom of the elder shamans might call it corporate soul loss. Despite lip service to recruiting and retention, bigger 401(k) matches don’t create shareholder value. Since you need a finance degree to understand the numbers, we don’t demand that companies do better. But even though we sense something’s wrong we’re too demoralized to shift our priorities and invest in our own futures.

These days the future is starting to look a lot like the pre-modern past. Moving in with your kids may again become the dominant retirement strategy. It’s happening right now, not just on the news but to people we know. And maybe to us.

Perhaps this wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen.

Think about it. If we maintained stronger bonds with our families, if several generations shared a roof, a table, and all the benefits and challenges that come with that, how would we change? Perhaps we’d all begin to reconnect with each other and remember what really matters. So this great takeaway and pending crisis for millions of Americans could also encourage us to move back in with our own, authentic, present selves. Enlightenment usually happens when you least expect it – perhaps even in your kids’ spare room.

The Naturopathic Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases

hen I see autoimmune patients in my practice, one of the first things I tell them is that they need to know their own body better than any of the doctors they are working with can possibly know it. Doctors see many patients with the same conditions, but none of the patients are exactly the same.

‘Doctor’ in Latin means teacher. We need to teach our patients how to control or correct the condition they have. In order to do this effectively, the patient has to know his or her own body.

Autoimmune disease is a diagnosis that I see in my practice every day as a naturopathic doctor (ND). NDs are known for being the best practitioners to treat chronic conditions. This is because we view each patient as an individual case and look for the causes of conditions and not just the symptoms presented. Patients who know their own bodies will benefit the most from this type of holistic treatment.

MDs and NDs Working Together The best modality of care for autoimmune patients is a cooperative approach between MDs and NDs to determine the root cause of the disease and then treat the resulting effects. This type of MD/ ND co-management is ideal for a patient who can benefit from both preventative lifestyle changes and traditional medications when needed. There are many different naturopathic approaches to autoimmune disease that can be effective, including diet, food-sensitivity testing and supplements. All of them involve putting the patient in charge of his or her own healthcare.

MDs are becoming more aware that naturopathic physicians do practice traditional medicine, but with some philosophies that are different than their own pharmaceutical-based training. NDs do recognize the need for pharmaceuticals, primarily as a last resort.

NDs usually work with patients to determine when a treatment is no longer necessary. This requires the commitment and cooperation of all involved; patients and doctors. Hopefully, we’re closer to the day when MDs and NDs will seamlessly work together on a cooperative plan for patients, utilizing the best of both approaches.

Managing Your Healthcare Patients need to learn how to manage their own health care, make their own decisions, and seek treatments that work for them.

If they don’t find the answers they are looking for with a practitioner, they should keep looking. To paraphrase an old saying, “No one person, doctrine or religion has the monopoly on knowledge.”

Patients with autoimmune conditions, or any chronic condition, should keep this in mind as they begin the search for awareness about their treatment options. Things a patient does every day, from the foods they eat to the products they use, the work they do, lifestyle, etc., all can have an effect on their health. Doctors cannot follow the patient every minute of the day to figure out what has adverse effects on that patient. The patient has to become savvy enough to figure it out, with help and direction from their doctors.

For example, one of my patients suddenly began having dizzy spells. They were random and sometimes lasted for hours, sometime for seconds. None of the doctors she went to could determine the cause or an effective treatment to correct the symptom. The patient changed her contact lens solution and symptoms completely resolved. None of us would have connected the two. The patient was aware enough of her daily lifestyle routine that she immediately noticed the change that stopped the symptom. Knowing your own body and recognizing that everything in your lifestyle has a bearing on your health is so important.

Treat The Cause(s) Not Just The Symptoms Digestion

Digestion is almost always an issue with autoimmune patients.

It needs to be addressed right away. If you can’t process and assimilate nutrients from food or supplements, then getting any remedies into the system is going to take much longer. Systemic treatment requires a systemic approach. Therefore, it is important that the body’s digestive system work in the patient’s favor. Any chronic condition will need to have the digestive system working optimally. The functions of the digestive tract are directly related to the optimal function of the immune system. An immune system already in trouble is likely to also have a digestive component that is problematic.

Diet Autoimmune patients need to know that what they are eating has a HUGE effect on their condition. Some patients are told that what they eat doesn’t matter. Your food is your nutrition—how can it not matter? It’s only logical that the human body requires the ability to assimilate all of the available nutrients in order to function. This is especially true for patients who have health conditions, including autoimmune disease.

When I advise patients to alter their diets in order to treat autoimmune issues, a frequent response is, “I’ve been eating this way my entire life, so how could food be an issue now?” Think about this statement. If food plays even a small part of the equation, and the patient has been eating the same way their entire life, then doesn’t it make sense that diet is at least part of what is causing the damage that has led to a bigger health problem?

The human body, when given the proper tools (such as nutrients), has an amazing ability to heal itself. It is also amazing how much abuse it will take before breaking down and creating a condition that is going to be more difficult to repair down the road.

With any chronic condition, the patient will improve by eating what helps them, and eliminating foods that do not help, or cause further issues. For autoimmune patients, the first two foods to be eliminated are inevitably dairy and wheat. Just about every pro-

cessed food has wheat in it. To avoid reading a ton of labels, the easiest way to handle wheat avoidance is to focus on eating plantbased foods. No labels, no guessing, just eat whole foods. As far as dairy, do not worry that eliminating it will cause a calcium deficiency. Many cultures around the world don’t consume the same large servings of dairy that Americans consume and they don’t suffer from osteoporosis. Many whole foods naturally contain calcium. If you’re still concerned, then you can always take a calcium supplement.

Other foods that should be excluded are sugar (of course) and red meat. There also is a group of vegetables, called the nightshades, which are considered highly inflammatory and should be avoided. These include the peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant.

Food Sensitivity Test Food sensitivity tests are available to help patients determine what other foods might be creating issues. These are not food allergy tests to determine anaphylactic reactions, but rather food sensitivity tests that show what are called ‘delayed reactions.’

Delayed reactions to foods are notoriously difficult to track. It is hard to correlate a response to a food when there isn’t an immediate connection, and it takes time for the body to react. The only true way to determine a sensitivity is the elimination of it for at least two weeks, and preferably longer.

A long-term condition won’t clear with two weeks of avoiding an offending food, but the patient will likely feel much better. That result is better than any test result.

Having a completely wholesome and healthy diet will make all the difference in how a patient feels and how the body handles various conditions. If a patient can’t handle the diet changes on his or her own, they need to seek help from someone who can guide them. This is a very important component of anyone’s healthcare, no matter what other treatment options they choose.

Supplements and Other Treatments Each autoimmune patient is different from the next. The supplements, botanicals, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, and medicine selected for each patient are all dependent on the individual and their symptoms. The modalities used by each practitioner can be very different as well. Patients have many choices to make when managing 14

their chronic conditions. There is a lot of recent research on the effects of vitamin D, DHEA and omega fatty acid for autoimmune disease. The list grows every year, as does the availability of information about new treatment protocols. Again, the patient is the key component in the equation for what the best heath plan will be for each individual.

The health plan also needs to reflect what the individual is able, or not able, to do. If a patient is not able to make dietary changes to help control the condition, then there probably will be a need for more nutritional supplements and possibly proteinfortified drinks. This will differ from a patient who can handle a nutrient-rich diet, likes to juice, eats only organic foods, and is willing to eliminate all processed foods. Using other remedies usually does require professional direction. There are so many options; a patient needs to work with a doctor who can help narrow the choices down to a plan that works for the individual. Otherwise, a patient who “tries various methods that they read about” could end up wasting a lot of money and time and taking too many supplements that are not helping.

Clinical research can determine if a

treatment or therapy will work for some patients, but it doesn’t mean it will work for all patients with the same condition. For example, the hormone DHEA may show promise for treatment…but what about patients who already have DHEA levels that are too high? The individual factor also is critical when examining the risk of interactions with pharmaceuticals. Even when patients are working with both MDs and NDs, the patient should be aware of contraindications between remedies and pharmaceuticals. Doctors see so many patients every day that they don’t remember what each patient is taking. It is extremely important to pay attention to what you are taking. Many patients come into my office with prescribed drugs, and I always ask if they know why they are taking each prescription. Many times, they don’t know what all the prescriptions are for.

past and present. Often, a trigger can be found in these areas. Helping the patient to understand the significance of these types of triggers, and determining how to resolve them, is another step in the direction of better health.

The complex nature of autoimmune conditions usually requires more than one practitioner to assist in a patient’s overall wellness. Working with doctors who appreciate the needs of a patient, and who are actively seeking and utilizing more than one modality at a time, can be an essential part of treatment. I advise patients to tell their MDs that they are seeking other treatment options that the MD may not be familiar with. We all need to work together to get a protocol that works for the patient. When an MD discourages a patient who explains that there are other specialists involved in treatment, the patient will not share essential information with that doctor. This is clearly not the best scenario for patients or doctors.

Therefore, it is important for all medical professionals to appreciate the needs of the patient, and what each practitioner brings to the case, for an optimal plan that will benefit the patient.

Are Physique Competitions for YOU!

T

he fastest growing division of competitive physique competitions is for women over 35. Gone are the days when turning thirty means gray hair, cardigans, and “Glamour Shots” photos on your hallway wall. Women all over the world are strapping on clear high heels, custom hand-made competition suits, and proudly displaying a “work of art” on stage in front of an audience that includes their admiring children, family, and friends. I am going to break down the components of what it takes to compete in today’s physique competition including Different Categories of Competition, Nutrition, Exercise, Stage Presentation/ Organizations, Show Day Essentials and more. In this article I am going to provide you a short snapshot on the world of competitive physique competitions.

Physique competitions are what I call a “form of art” where the human body is molded into what I consider its most athletic form. There are different levels of a fitness “look” so there are different categories to choose from including Bikini, Figure, Physique/Fit Body, and Bodybuilding where you compete based on your physique goals.

Your physique goals might be based on your body’s natural structure or perhaps your goal is to transform your body with specific nutrition and exercise programs into a “look” in a different category. I will go over in detail the different categories and their requirements in another article.

Choosing to compete depends on what you want to earn out of it. Perhaps you want to prove to yourself that “you still got it” or maybe you are intrigued by the challenge and want to see if you can even do it at all. An interesting part of a competition is when each woman is introduced individually because she is no longer just a woman in a bikini; she is a mother of five, a grandmother, a member of our military, a doctor/ lawyer, and the list of inspiration goes on.

Regardless of the goal, each of these women shares in the excitement of doing something out of the ordinary and challenging. The most important part about competing is having fun, so regardless of personal goals…be sure to enjoy the experience.

Fitness is achieved at any age and with physique competitions the 20 year old body is NOT the one with the advantage. Transforming the body takes time, patience, and consistency to reach its highest potential and maturity. Women over 30, 35, and even 40 and 50 are dropping jaws with bodies they never had in their youth……because they CAN. Fitness is achievable at ANY age.

If you’re reading this and saying, “Maybe for someone else,” my response to you is: “You CAN do this and you WILL be amazed at what you are capable of when you didn’t think it was possible. “ The preparation for a physique competition isn’t just signing an entry form and showing up. Proper training, nutrition, and most important STAGE PRESENTATION are keys to success. There are people out there that can help you with each of these components but you need to do your research first and make sure that the person you are working with is reputable.

Although the journey to a physique stage is an individual one, it is important to try and involve those around you so the journey to stage is a part of your lifestyle.

Any small change by family members can provide a sense of unity, so before you begin the journey to the stage, plan to include your family rather than alienate them. This unity can include exercising together, cooking together, practicing posing for stage in front of them, or even attending a show or two together to get a feel for what is to come. Support from loved ones makes a huge difference in the enjoyment of physique competition.

My final thoughts are on naysayers….

Competing isn’t for everyone and there will be a lot of naysayers that don’t understand WHY you would want to do it. Not everyone is going to support your venture and you have to be OK with that. Expect some “friends” to talk down to you and express “concern” over what they will call your “obsession.” In contrast also expect to make new friends that share in your excitement over doing something challenging and fun where your age, number of children, career(s) are not limiting factors. Anything

that is different is going to be polarizing for some people and you will have to be OK with that and remember you are doing this for YOU. Enjoy the journey.

Hypnosis:

The Most Misunderstood Modality

T

he field of alternative medicine is truly coming into its own— many treatment modalities are available today that were nonexistent even a decade ago. In addition, as we move toward healthy, preventative lifestyles, many ancient wellness practices are beginning to enjoy a well-deserved renaissance.

Hypnosis is one of those ancient practices. It was studied and employed by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, among many others, and has been vastly studied in the millennia since then. It has helped countless people, and yet it’s still misunderstood. I can’t count the number of people who, once they find out I’m a hypnotist, are afraid to have me look them in the eye for fear that I’ll hypnotize them and make them cluck like a chicken or dance like Madonna, based on what they’ve seen in the media or at a hypnosis show.

There are an equal number of people who are extremely curious and want to be hypnotized, but believe they can’t be.

Possibly Our Most Powerful Tool These types of misunderstandings are disconcerting because hypnosis is possibly the most powerful tool that we all have in our toolbox, but many of us aren’t using it because of the confusion.

Let’s clear some of these misconceptions. First and foremost, hypnosis is extremely safe; in fact, it’s much, much safer than many traditional treatments that we consider the norm, such as chemical and surgical interventions. Hypnosis is 100% natural, leveraging the incredible power of the mind vs. the power of the pill, which happily means no side effects. Most Olympic and professional athletes are in the state of hypnosis while performing their sport. Most famous artists and musicians are in the state while creating masterpieces.

And children are in the state most of their day, as hypnosis is the mind’s natural learning state and children are always learning. You, in fact, are in the state of hypnosis more than you’re fully conscious, so set your fears of it aside.

Use Your Entire Mind to Accelerate Success I’m sure many of you are familiar with the adage that we only use 10% of our mental capacity. The Benefits of High Cholesterol

hat’s right, the benefits. While researching this article I came across an interesting study that demonstrated the power of cholesterol. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology looked at 52,087 individuals between the ages of 20 and 74. After adjusting for factors like age, smoking and blood pressure, researchers found women with high cholesterol (more than 270 mg/dl) had a 28 percent lower mortality risk than women with low cholesterol (under 193 mg/dl). Risk for heart disease, cardiac arrest and stroke also declined as cholesterol levels rose.

Yet, if you do a quick search on the internet, you’ll find all types of propaganda that supports taking cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Those materials are supporting a myth. Our bodies need cholesterol.

And not having enough can cause major damage.

Statins are Big Business At present, 17% of Americans take statin drugs to lower cholesterol, and guidelines that are being drawn-up now would increase that number to 47% of the population, which would result in a financial benefit to the drug companies of more than $200 billion dollars per year. This increase in statin use has had no effect on lowering heart disease and may in fact be causing untold damage to patients on these drugs.

It also may be causing heart failure, the very thing it is prescribed to prevent.

The Important Functions of Cholesterol But wait…lowering cholesterol is supposed to prevent heart attacks.

It is this flawed supposition that can cause well-meaning physicians to prescribe statins in alarming numbers. Cholesterol performs several important functions in the body. Perhaps the most important of these is its role in forming and maintaining cell walls and structures.

Cells also need cholesterol to help them adjust to changes in temperature, and it’s used by nerve cells for insulation. Cholesterol also is a lubricant and is essential for synthesizing a number of critical hormones, including the sex hormones testosterone, progesterone and estrogen. Bile, a fluid produced by the liver, plays a vital role in the processing and digestion of fats. To make bile, the liver uses cholesterol. Your body also needs cholesterol to make vitamin D; in the presence of sunlight, cholesterol is converted into vitamin D. And finally, HDL cholesterol seems to remove plaques of LDL cholesterol inside arteries, ‘cleaning’ the arteries as it moves through the bloodstream.

Eating the Right Foods Cholesterol is made in the body and also is absorbed from foods. According to the Harvard School of Medicine, it is the saturated and trans fats from dairy or fried foods, for example, that raise our bad cholesterol. Overconsumption of carbohydrates is another leading cause of high cholesterol and triglycerides.

This may be why those people on a paleo type diet generally reduce their cholesterol. Good fats from foods like seeds, nuts, avocadoes, and fish, will provide us with the cholesterol our bodies need to function optimally, reduce heart-attack risk and feel great.

And regarding eggs, they have many valuable beneficial nutrients.

Eggs are a great source of digestible protein. Numerous vitamins, including vitamin A, potassium and many B vitamins like folic acid, choline and biotin, are also packed into this wonder food. In fact, very few foods have such a diverse nutrient makeup. Many of the ingredients are specifically needed for the health of the nerves and the brain. A 1999 study of 37,000 men, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, , suggests that consumption of up to one egg per day is unlikely to have substantial overall impact on the risk of coronary heart disease or stroke among healthy men and women. According to Udo Erasmus, a PhD and expert in essential fats, approximately 50 g/day of fat should come from the diet and we can supplement daily to account for approximately another gram or so.

So basically, according to Dr Sinatra, there is one very small group of people that will benefit from the use of statins. For the rest, the risk outweighs any benefits.

In a different radio interview, Peter Langsjeon, another cardiologist who studied the effects of COQ10 levels on heart failure stated, “I’m sort of an unusual cardiologist in that I’m not convinced that the benefits of statins come close to outweighing their harm and so I don’t tend to be a big advocate of them in the first place. But if you’re just looking at the big general way medicine is practiced, 99.9% of physicians use statins aggressively and they believe that the side effects are minimal. I think they’re just not seeing it and that they’re not minimal and they’re certainly not uncommon.”

How to Determine if Statins are Right for You One rule in life is to never complain without solutions so here it goes. If anyone you know has any symptoms relating to the above-

This is between you and your doctor. What I am suggesting that if anyone you know is on a statin, they should really know the whole story. If cholesterol is the culprit, alone, of heart disease, then why do 50% of the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol? With the fact that the medical industry is now trying to medicate almost 50% of the population, including children as young as nine years old, it is a real controversy that is important to confront.

There are rare cases in which drugs are needed to reduce cholesterol, and now many experts are speaking out. Dr Steven Sinatra is probably one of the most famous board-certified cardiologists and experts in natural heart health. In an interview with Dr. Joe Mercola he gave his view of statins. “I feel that the best indication for a statin drug is a middle-aged male with coronary heart disease and a low HDL,” he says. “To me this person has the greatest to gain and the least to lose. The problem I have with cholesterol-lowering drugs is that they have horrific side effects… If you treat a woman in her 30s just for ‘high cholesterol,’ and treat numbers, I think we’re doing a disservice… We really shouldn’t use them in elderly people. We shouldn’t use them in young people, or in women. New Season, New Outlook on Health

T

here’s a diagnosis and a pill for everything these days, isn’t there? As someone who lived most of her life on medication for something, I can honestly say that I have seen more relief from my chronic low back pain through therapeutic and gentle yoga than I ever did from steroid injections and pain killers. The same holds true for all other aspects of my life and health. For over four years now, I have not taken medications of any kind, for any reason, and have instead focused on diet and lifestyle changes that support my health. Looking back, I realize that those diagnoses and prescriptions provided, at best, temporary and superficial relief. They weren’t solving the problems, but just masking the pain.

In my private therapeutic yoga practice in West Hartford, I find that I am consistently and successfully helping my clients to heal from several common issues that are so often treated unsuccessfully, and only with medications: • High stress • Low back pain • Neck/shoulder pain • Hip pain • Arthritis • Knee replacements and/or knee pain • Anxiety • Depression • Vertigo • Pulmonary disorders • High blood pressure Many clients of mine have gone the traditional route with their primary care physicians and Western medicine, but, unfortunately, found themselves with more pain and discomfort, and only a prescription in hand as “treatment.” For most, turning to therapeutic yoga was their first try at a holistic approach to healing. They’ve realized that it’s up to them and only them to decide that they want something better for themselves, that they’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, and ready and willing to embrace a new approach to their health.

From what I’ve seen and personally experienced, most injuries are stressors from compressing and tightening and decades of repetitive motion. When we softly and gently open and release that compression, the muscles are given a new memory, where tension and the past is released, and tightness, aching, and stiffness dissolves.

In that releasing, we also free buried emotions and old thought patterns. By practicing yoga, we connect with ourselves and get to

know ourselves on a deeper level, noticing our beliefs and thinking patterns. By simply noticing these patterns, we can soften around them, release them and lay down new tracks. True and lasting healing takes place by softening the physical and emotional body and uniting the mind, body and spirit in relaxation.

Therapeutic Yoga for Pulmonary Disease For instance, for my client with pulmonary disease, who could barely speak a full sentence without gasping for air the first time she came in, we focused on opening up the side body and chest with therapeutic and chair yoga. Combining breath work, long holds of therapeutic poses and movement on a basic level with chair yoga, we noticed a major improvement almost instantaneously. The more we opened the areas that were tight and restricted with gentle stretching and deep breathing, the more space she had for her breath, and aches and pains improved.

I encouraged her to notice her breath throughout the day, and notice the stressors that would trigger her gasping for air. Using simple mindfulness techniques, she became more aware of stressors in her outside world, as well as in her interior world. Simply noticing allowed her to let them go and practice acceptance of her limitations. In just a few months, I noticed a dramatic improvement in her breathing and overall demeanor. She comes to me now lighter and softer, with an obvious improvement in her attitude and a more positive outlook. She complains less about aches and pains, and has far less difficulty speaking without gasping for air.

Therapeutic Yoga for Low Back Pain For my clients with low back pain, we work on countering their lifelong bad habits that typically relate in some way to poor seated and standing posture. We do this by lengthening, bending and twisting the spine in all six directions, and also opening up incredibly tight and restricted hips, to bring movement into the joints and bring in space between the discs. Almost all of my clients with back issues have some form of arthritis in their backs or in their necks and shoulders, which contributes to the stiffness and joint pain they feel.

Through gentle yoga, softly releasing tension in the muscles and getting more synovial fluid into the joints, my clients experience less stiffness, aches and pains.

Prior to one of my clients’ starting her private therapeutic practice with me, she suffered from chronic pinching and aching low

“Healing on a deeper level requires a balanced dance of stillness and movement...That’s where yoga can help” back pain that had led to her having to give up her favorite activities, such as bike riding and hiking. After just a few weeks of twice weekly sessions with me, she noticed a dramatic improvement in her level of pain and was able to get back on her bike for lengthy rides, pain-free. I taught and encouraged her to practice yoga poses on her own each morning and night to release built-up tension, accumulated from sitting at a desk all day. Combining breath and movement has released tension in her body, resistance in her mind about her old story that she “can’t do that, because she’s in pain,” and relieved her stiff and sore neck and low back. Mindfulness awareness taught her to not overdo it as she became more active again, experiencing less pain the day after her activities.

Therapeutic Yoga for Stress and Anxiety I also have many clients with high-stress, high-anxiety jobs that leave them wound-up, overwhelmed, and exhausted. As a person formerly on an 8mg daily dose of Xanax, who suffered from panic attacks so bad I couldn’t leave the house, I understand how crippling anxiety can be. In my former life, treatment consisted of prescriptions, never the power of breath and its calming effect on the nervous system.

What I learned is that deep breathing triggers a response in the nervous system to shut off the fight-or-flight stress response, bringing in a sense of calm. With practice, deep breaths can bring relief from anxiety within a matter of minutes. With a pill, you’re waiting about twenty minutes before the pill dissolves into the bloodstream, sending a signal to the brain. With that pill, you’re basically rewarding yourself with a nap, long after the anxiety has already passed. I teach mindfulness, present moment awareness, and breathing techniques to students with high anxiety and stress, to help them during difficult and stressful work and life situations. After all, most anxieties come from being trapped in future-thinking, contemplating fears of what can “go wrong” and the “what-ifs” of life. If we stop the fearful train of thought about things out of our control by focusing on the breath—the here and now—we find it easier to release those fears and worries, resulting in a calmer and clearer state of mind.

Uniting breath, movement, body, mind and sprit are powerful ways to treat illness, disease, stress, and injuries. My clients and I have personally experienced tremendous healing from the practice.

ow many of us suffer from low back or hip pain? Shin splints? Foot pain? Fallen arches in the feet? Bunions? There are a variety of approaches that can support improved low back, leg and foot health. One of these approaches is a combined approach of shoe orthotic intervention (shoe inserts) and manual therapy. Though the feet and low back are not directly neighboring, it is helpful to understand that they are strongly related. Whereas the forces from the ground enter through our feet as we walk or run, these forces are then transcribed and dispersed up the legs and low back. This process is essential to being able to function through life with any kind of movement. Having mobility in the feet as well as the low back allow us to move through life without pain. When the alignment or biomechanics of the low back and/or feet is affected, we start to ‘break down’. Correcting the biomechanics at these sites in the body typically will help to reduce pain, improve function and strength, and improve overall movement in the whole body.

the foot during walking, specifically when the foot hits the ground.

Many people are aware that their foot position is important when running. They ‘pronate’ which means that their foot arch collapses and the foot rolls inward, contributing to conditions like foot pain, shin splints, and reduced performance.

Biomechanics of the low back, or healthy alignment of the low back joints, serves as the foundation to the house that is our body.

This is like the alignment of a car. If the car alignment is ‘off’, the tires will wear down incorrectly. If your low back, hip, knee, ankle or foot alignment is ‘off’, you may develop ‘wear patterns’ in other joints. Commonly, when the mechanics of the pelvis and legs are faulty, the leg usually rolls inwards during impact with the ground.

That rolling inwards of the leg causes our foot to flatten and overpronate.

The position of the foot in such sports as skating or skiing is also very important. When people have foot or ankle pain or other symptoms such as swelling, and they seek therapy for these symptoms, the therapist must evaluate the whole person. Forces from the ground must be normalized through good joint alignment therapy techniques or the stresses of this joint dysfunction can cause pain.

The Relationship Between GMOs and Gluten Sensitivity

G

enetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have become increasingly prevalent in North America since their commercial introduction into the mainstream food supply in the mid-1990s.

Since 1999, GMO-containing foods have dominated North American markets.

During the same period, North Americans have seen corresponding increases in inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions (such as ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel disease), autoimmune diseases (like celiac disease), endocrine and reproductive disorders (such as type 2 diabetes, thyroid dysregulation, obesity, and fertility problems), neurological and developmental disorders (such as Alzheimer’s and autism), and food allergies, including gluten-related disorders.

Although correlation does not prove causation, the sheer number of correlations warrants further scrutiny, via independent research, into the potential links between eating GMOs and escalating health issues. For example, whether by coincidence or not, the main dietary offenders for autism include soy (the #1 GMO crop), food additives (most of which are made from GMO corn), milk (most of which contains the GM hormone rBGH), and gluten.

Genetic Roulette Consumer activist Jeffrey Smith is one of the world’s leading experts on GMOs, and has authored the book Genetic Roulette, which details many animal studies that show relationships between GMOs and various health issues, such as reproductive issues and infant mortality, increased risk of cancers, changes in intestinal and liver function, and the development of allergic reactions to non-GM foods.

The food sensitivity that is increasing most rapidly today is gluten sensitivity. Reactions to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, currently afflict 18 million Americans. Symptoms range from mild, such as gas and bloating, to quite serious, as with celiac disease. Although there might be many culprits behind the rise in gluten sensitivity, its incidence has increased sharply since the 1990s, closely following the rise in the prevalence of GMOs in our food supply.

Nine GMO Foods There are currently nine GMO foods in our food supply: corn, canola, soy, cotton (seed oil), sugar (from sugar beets), zucchini and yellow squash, alfalfa (used to feed livestock), and Hawaiian papaya. Wheat is actually not currently on the list of GM crops, however, there is some suspicion about the integrity of the genetic makeup of U.S. wheat.

In 1963, an FDA ruling allowed for imported wheat berries (seed) and flour to be irradiated to control insects. And since 1968, when the FDA approved irradiation of U.S. wheat and flour, wheat in the U.S. has been routinely irradiated. It is possible that this irradiation may have changed the genetic sequencing of wheat. Further, after the incidental discovery of rogue GM wheat in a previous GM test field in Oregon earlier this year, there are lingering questions about whether previously tested GM wheat (which did not make it to market) could have tainted the gene pool of our non-GM wheat.

Roundup® Another explanation of the rising incidence of gluten sensitivity is a more indirect path. Most genetically modified plants are engineered to be highly tolerant of the pesticide Roundup®, whose active ingredient is a chemical called glyphosate. Since these crops are so heavily sprayed, they tend to accumulate high levels of glyphosate, which ends up in the foods made from them. Other crops, such as cotton and corn, have been engineered to produce their own insecticide, called Bt-toxin, within every cell of the plant itself. A recent analysis of research, done by the Institute of Responsible Technology, suggests glyphosate and Bt-toxin may be linked to several conditions that might cause or worsen gluten-related disorders, including impaired digestion, changes to normal gut bacteria, intestinal wall damage and permeability, and immune activation.

Impaired Digestion Soy normally contains a compound that inhibits digestion of protein, but GM soy contains seven times the normal amount. In

studies, mice fed a diet high in glyphosate have shown a reduction in digestive enzymes.

Not having proper digestive enzymes leads to undigested food particles and contributes to the flourishing of harmful bacteria, possibly provoking the symptoms seen in gluten sensitivity.

Changes to Normal Gut Bacteria Celiac and gluten-sensitive patients commonly have an imbalance of gut flora. The herbicide glyphosate is also a strong antibiotic that can significantly reduce normal populations of beneficial flora and promote deleterious strains, even with minimal exposure. An overgrowth of bad bacteria promotes immune reactions, inflammation, and leaky gut, all of which are seen in gluten-related disorders.

Intestinal Wall Damage The hallmark of celiac disease is the resultant flattening of the cells that line the walls of the intestines. Gluten-sensitive individuals are prone to damage of the intestinal wall through exposure to gluten. In animal studies, both glyphosate and Bt-toxin have been shown to induce similar structural damage to intestinal cells.

Intestinal Permeability, or Leaky Gut, and Allergies The so-called leaky gut is the intestinal permeability that occurs in an inflamed colon. The gaps between intestinal cells allow the body’s immune defenses access to the intestinal lumen, however, they also allow incompletely digested food particles to pass into the bloodstream, potentially triggering immune and allergic reactions. Gluten-related disorders are often accompanied by intestinal permeability, perhaps even triggered by it.

The Bt-toxin of GMO corn kills insects by compromising the digestive tracts of insects; a 2012 study confirmed that it affects human cells in the same way. It has been shown to survive human digestion and has been found in the blood of 93% of pregnant women and 80% of their unborn children. Through its direct effect on the GI tract, GMO Bt-toxin may turn out to be a causative factor in gluten-sensitivities.

Immune Activation Gluten-sensitivities (including celiac disease) may not develop until later in life, which reinforces the idea that they may be triggered environmentally. A 2011 study on mice showed that, within an inflammatory bowel, retinoic acid (a metabolite of vitamin A) triggered a specific immunological shift to gluten sensitiv-

ity. It just so happens that glyphosate activates retinoic acid. In other words, eating GMO foods laden with glyphosate may be one of the environmental factors in the onset of gluten-related disorders.

Another study showed that Bt-toxin also may activate immune reactions. After mice were exposed to Bt-toxin, they showed immune response not only to the Bt-toxin itself, but also to foods that had not previously caused immune reactions. If the human immune system responds similarly, eating GM foods could actually cause immune reactions to previously non-reactive foods.

The Non-GMO Diet ‘Prescription’ Some physicians have begun prescribing non-GMO diets to their gluten-sensitive patients and have reported faster and more complete recovery of symptoms after doing so.

1. Avoiding GMOs The best way to avoid GMOs is to eliminate all non-organic sources of the major GMO crops. Currently, of commercial crops, 50% of Hawaiian papaya, 88% of corn, 90% of canola, 90% of cotton, 94% of soy, 95% of sugar beets, and more than 24,000 acres of zucchini and yellow squash are genetically modified.

Certified organic seeds and crops are, by definition, non-GMO. When shopping, look for organic produce and seek out products labeled “Non-GMO Project Verified.” Buy organic dairy, eggs and meats; most commercially farmed animals will have been fed GMO feed. Look for wild-caught, as opposed to farm-raised, fish. Commercially prepared foods often contain hidden sources of GMOs; downloading the convenient shopping guide or app from nonGMOshoppingguide.com can help you safely choose non-GMO brands.

2. Dining Out Dining out is more challenging. In restaurants, cooking oils are most often canola, cottonseed and/or corn oils. ‘House-made’ dressings, breads and soups are often created from commercial mixes and stocks. Look for restaurant choices labeled wild-caught, 100%

grass-fed, or organic. Asking your server to help you find choices may help inform the restaurant’s management of the growing consumer demand.

The Gluten-Free Trap Those who are gluten sensitive need to take extra precautions.

Many who are choosing products that are labeled gluten-free are unknowingly increasing their intake of GMOs when they switch from wheat to corn- or soy-based products.

At first, the choice to avoid GMOs can seem daunting. GMO Free CT, a Connecticut group that has been instrumental in initiating the nation’s first GMO labeling law, has a Facebook page which lists local events in and around Connecticut that can help keep consumers informed and in touch with like-minded parents and practitioners.

The Wonders Of Multifunctional Whey Protein

C

What is Whey Protein?

Milk protein consists of 80% casein and 20% whey. Whey is the liquid that remains after milk has been curdled and strained during cheese production; the healthy constituent that itself is made up of various proteins, each of which has its own benefits. The subfractions of whey protein include: (1) lactoferrin (1%) – improves intestinal microflora; inhibits cancer cells; combats obesity; serves as an antioxidant

and powerful immune stimulator, and iron and platelet-binding modulator; (2) immunoglobulins (8%) – serve as antimicrobials in the intestines; (3) beta-lactoglobulin (35%) – exhibits opioid-like activity with blood pressure benefits; and (4) alpha-lactalbumin (12%) – the primary whey protein in human breast milk; high in the amino acid L-tryptophan and thus helps the body make the neurotransmitter serotonin, needed for sleep, memory, and coping with stress.

Considered a complete super food, whey protein contains little to no casein or lactose (depending on the product), but includes all 18 amino acids (including the 9 essential amino acids) and is high in branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) (leucine, isoleucine, and valine), critical to stimulation of muscle protein synthesis and prevention of protein breakdown.

There are three primary types of whey protein: (1) Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) - contains low levels of both fat and carbohydrates (lactose); concentration of protein can range from 30-90%; (2) Whey

Protein Isolate (WPI) - further processed to remove all fat and lactose; usually contains at least 90% protein; and (3) Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH) - considered the ‘predigested’ form of whey protein, as it has already undergone partial hydrolysis, a process necessary for the body to absorb protein. Due to improved digestibility it has lower allergen potential.

Importance of Protein / Whey vs Other Proteins Protein and its building blocks, amino acids, are critical to human survival. Insufficient protein consumption can lead to loss of muscle mass and strength (often causes falls in the elderly), hair loss (the body saves protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase, increasing shedding 2-3 months later), decreased bone mass, impaired immunity and cognition, and delayed wound/surgery healing.

Protein powders derive from animalbased protein (whey, casein, and egg)

and plant-based protein (e.g., pea, quinoa, amaranth, soy, hemp, rice). Although slightly acidic and more difficult to digest than plant/ egg proteins, whey protein is considered the gold standard for fitness gurus due to its high biological value (i.e., absorption, use, and retention). It has a reputation for having the highest nitrogen absorption (important to muscle gain), and has a higher BCAA profile than other non-enhanced protein powders.

Scientific, Study-Proven Key Health Benefits There is ample scientific evidence that whey protein’s amino acids, BCAAs, bioactive peptides, and subfractions provide a wide range of health benefits, including: 1. Anti-Aging Promotion - More than seven decades of data proves that calorie restriction (CR), the reduction of caloric intake without malnutrition, can boost longevity in nearly all species. As a CR-mimetic, whey protein’s BCAAs provide the benefits of CR without a reduction in food intake. Like other CR-mimetics (e.g., resveratrol, grape seed extract, quercetin), whey does this by influencing specific genes that impact cell repair or death.

2. Healthy Weight and Blood Sugar Maintenance - Whey protein boosts metabolic rate (J Nutr 2011 Apr), decreases blood sugar levels, increases insulin secretion (J Nutr Biochem. 2013 Jan), and (like other proteins) is more satisfying and requires more calories to break down than carbohydrates. The digestion of whey protein releases several hormones that cause reduced food intake and increased satiety (J Nutr Biochem. 2013 Jan). (Any highprotein breakfast suppresses the hunger-inducing hormone ghrelin, increases cholecystokinin (CCK), a peptide hormone of the GI tract that suppresses hunger, and can curb hunger/cravings throughout the day.) According to nutrition researcher Donald Layman, PhD (Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), protein-rich foods high in the amino acid leucine (abundant in whey protein) help maintain muscle mass while reducing body fat during weight loss.

3. Cardiovascular Health Promotion - One study reported “a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol at week 12 in the whey group compared with the casein (group)” (Brit J Nutr 2010 Sept). Several whey peptides, including alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin, exhibit opioid-like activity. “Endogenous opioid peptides have shown promise as blood-pressure modulators.”

4. Immunity Enhancement & Cancer Cell Inhibition - Whey protein broadly fortifies the immune system. In one 2001 study (Immunol Cell Biol 2001), mice supplemented with whey produced higher levels of white blood cells, www.NaturalNutmeg.com

lymphocytes, and cytokines. Thought to be in part due to its high levels of cysteine/ cysteine (used to synthesize glutathione), whey also has proven to increase glutathione levels dramatically in HIVpositive patients (Clin Invest Med., June 1993). Still other studies show that whey can prevent tumors through increased glutathione levels, spleen lymphocyte proliferation, phagocytosis, and activity of NK, T helper, and cytotoxic T cells (Curr Pharm Des. 2007). Glutathione is considered one of the body’s most important antioxidants that protects it from both endogenous and exogenous (i.e., pollution, toxins, exercise, UV light exposure) oxidative stressors and detoxifies carcinogens.

5. GI Health Promotion - Its ability to raise the body’s glutathione levels enables whey protein to protect tissue against damage caused by inflammation. Researchers have found that it may also help prevent alcohol- and stress-induced gastric mucosal injury, ulcers, and other GI pathologies.

6. Brain Health Promotion - Adequate levels of L-tryptophandependent serotonin in the brain relieves depression and stress.

One double-blind, placebo-controlled study revealed that whey protein’s alpha-lactalbumin not only increases the plasma ratio of tryptophan, but also that it improved brain serotonin activity, coping ability, and mood in highly stress-vulnerable subjects (Am J Clin Nutr 2000 Jun). Again, because of its ability to boost glutathione levels, studies demonstrate that whey may also protect against agerelated diseases, including neurocognitive disorders.

Incorporating Whey Protein Into Your Diet Ideally, whey protein should be included in a high-alkaline, healthy diet that includes a diverse mix of amino acids from whole food protein sources (e.g., egg, fish, chicken, turkey, soy, legumes).

Try this approach to determine the appropriate amount of protein to include in your own dietary regimen: (1) calculate your weight in kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2; then (2) calculate the appropriate amount of ingested protein in grams by multiplying your weight in kilograms by 0.8-1.8 gm/kg (use 0.8gm/kg if you are in good health and are sedentary; use a number 1.0-1.8 gm/kg if you are under stress, pregnant, recovering from an illness, or involved in consistent and intense weight or endurance training). Therapeutic doses of whey protein can go as high as three shakes per day between meals and before bedtime.

The human body contains about 11-13 lbs. of muscle protein.

Physical exertion breaks down muscle, requiring the consumption of protein to sustain and rebuild it. While there is more than one way to prepare for and recover from exercise, some experts recommend consumption of whey protein+simple carbohydrates 15-30 minutes before exercising, and heavy whey protein (15-25% of total daily calories)+carbohydrates within 30-90 minutes thereafter. If glucose levels are inadequate due to insufficient intake of carbohydrates, the body breaks down proteins for energy. If an athlete consumes inadequate quantities of protein, the body uses muscle and other body proteins to synthesize glucose. Over time, this can lead to lean muscle wasting and training intolerance.

While some experts argue that low-fat dairy products offer health benefits, most agree that dairy is generally unhealthy and unnecessary in the human diet because it causes inflammation, is extremely difficult to digest, and increases body acidity. ADHD: A Natural Approach

D

istractibility, inability to control impulses, poor listening, forgetfulness, and hyperactivity are all signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The disorder affects adults and children, and can run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition plays a role. Exposure to cigarettes, alcohol or other drugs during pregnancy can also influence the development of ADHD in children.

More than 6% of the United States population has been diagnosed with ADHD. Males are more likely to be diagnosed than females.

Symptoms are most easily recognized in children; when schoolwork is not being completed and teachers report on behavioral problems in the classroom, ADHD might be the problem.

It can be more difficult to recognize the symptoms of ADHD in adults. Adults usually explain away their impulsivity or inability to complete tasks, not realizing there might be an underlying cause. Without treatment, ADHD symptoms can become so severe they can impair the ability to plan daily tasks like grocery shopping, bill paying and other chores.

No matter the severity of symptoms or the age of the individual suffering, the good news is a myriad of options exist for treating and managing symptoms. The frustrating part of ADHD is finding a treatment that is lasting and does not carry heavy side effects. The following are conservative treatment options to be considered in managing ADHD.

Medication Several medications can be prescribed to help an individual maintain focus. Medications are great for the short term, while underlying causes of ADHD are being investigated. Medications should be used sparingly and only when absolutely necessary as there are side effects including insomnia, headaches and lack of appetite.

While the verdict is still out whether or not sugar truly influences hyperactivity, what is known is the effect of blood sugar spikes and dips on mood, energy and focus.

Getting protein-rich food sources throughout the day, starting with breakfast, reduces distractibility due to blood sugar instability.

Iron helps to carry oxygen in the body, which helps one maintain stamina and energy during the day. Iron also maintains oxygen flow to the brain and body, resulting in an improved ability to focus. Low iron status is correlated with fatigue, irritability and an inability to focus.

Omega-3 Fatty acids

Sleep

Omega 3s are found in fish, nuts and seeds. The human body needs omega-3 fatty acids for brain health and to reduce inflammation. Researchers have found low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in children who have ADHD. Adding super foods like chia seeds and fish to your diet, and/ or adding omega 3 supplementation, may help with symptoms of ADHD.

Set a bedtime for the work/school week and stick to it. A full night of restful sleep is essential for brain function the next day. We all are well aware of how sleep deprivation can lead to difficulty concentrating. If you think you are suffering from insomnia or disrupted sleep, seek medical advice. There are ways to improve sleep quality.

B vitamins All B vitamins are important when it comes to health. Vitamin B6 helps to develop neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers in the brain. This helps improve mood and focus. Vitamin B12 helps protect nerve cells from damage, in addition to boosting energy and stamina. Some rich sources of B vitamins are animal proteins, including red meat, fish and eggs.

Magnesium Magnesium is a mineral that is typically low in the standard American diet. Magnesium is just as important as calcium when it comes to bone health and strength; it helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure and also decreases distractibility and irritably symptoms. Increasing dietary consumption of this important mineral can make a difference in focus and attentiveness in ADHD sufferers. Dark greens, including spinach, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate are all sources of magnesium.

Dehydration Drying out your brain is obviously not a good idea. When your body is dehydrated it affects neurotransmission (brain talk). This leads to sleepiness, focus issues and headaches. Dehydration is the single most easily rectifiable way to improve your focus. Water is the beverage of choice; however, other non-caffeinated beverages like herbal tea do count toward your total intake of water.

Counseling ADHD is not only frustrating for the individual suffering, it also affects loved ones.

Consider counseling to manage symptoms of ADHD. Also consider counseling for family members, to help find ways to assist in treatment goals and prevent aggravation.

Millions of Americans Have Food Sensitivity... and Don’t Know It

illions of Americans suffer with food sensitivities and don’t know it. Symptoms of food sensitivities tend to be those that people deal with on a daily basis but don’t want to fully address, including itching skin, rashes, abdominal pain, stomach bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, congestion, coughing, runny nose, headaches, body aches and pains, fatigue, mood swings, and more. Often, by the time the food sensitivity is properly identified, the symptoms have become elevated and the patient’s overall health can be compromised.

Symptoms from food sensitivities are more common than symptoms from food allergies and affect a much higher percentage of people than previously thought. Medical evidence shows food sensitivities are much more prevalent than true food allergies; food allergies affect only about two to four percent of adults and four to six percent of children.

Food Sensitivity vs. Food Allergy Food intolerance and non-allergic food sensitivity are terms widely used for various physiological responses associated with a particular food, or for a compound found in a range of foods.

Food sensitivities differ from true food allergies, however, the symptoms can be very similar, and they are often confused.

Food intolerance or sensitivity is a detrimental reaction, often delayed, to a food, beverage, food additive, or compound that produces symptoms in one or more of the body’s organs and systems, but is not a true food allergy.

A true food allergy requires the presence of immune mechanisms (IgE antibodies) against the food, while a food intolerance does not always involve the immune system.

Food intolerances/ sensitivities can be classified according to their mechanism. Intolerance/ sensitivity can result from the absence of specific chemicals or enzymes needed to digest a food substance, as in hereditary fructose intolerance. It may be a result of an abnormality in the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, as occurs in fructose malabsorption. Food intolerance reactions can result from naturally occurring chemicals in foods, as in salicylate sensitivity.

How prevalent are food sensitivities?

3 in 4 people report sensitivity to dairy.

1 in 3 people report sensitivity to yeast.

1 in 7 people report sensitivity to wheat/gluten.

1 in 3 people report sensitivity to sugar.

Identifying Food Sensitivity Food sensitivities can be difficult to identify, as some symptoms can manifest several hours after eating while others may not surface for several days. However, it is important to identify what foods may be causing a reaction in order to avoid the substance and reduce the symptoms. This can be tricky; even if a certain item is suspected, it can be hard to track, since the reaction that is present today could be from something that was consumed yesterday.

Some reactions can depend on the amount of the item eaten.

A small or moderate amount of a reactive substance may not cause any noticeable symptoms, but a larger amount of the substance could cause symptoms. What’s even more confounding is that symptoms may only happen if the reactive item is eaten in combination with another reactive item, thus making identification of a food sensitivity even more difficult.

Although some food-sensitivity reactions can be dramatic, many times the reactions are more moderate symptoms that can be annoying or uncomfortable. Having only moderate symptoms makes it easier for them to go unchecked, and because of this, it’s easy to eat a food that is reactive, day after day, without even realizing it is causing any symptoms. Over time, the moderate symptoms can accumulate and result in significant symptoms.

According to a recent report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 90% of food sensitivities are associated with eight food types: • Cow’s milk and cheese • Eggs • Peanuts • Soy foods • Wheat • Fish • Crustacean shellfish (such shrimp, prawns, lobster, and crab) • Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, and chestnuts)

Food Sensitivities can be Easily Identified The items above make up the bulk of our western diets. The Autoimmune War Within: Fighting the Battle with Nutrition and Exercise

A

utoimmune disease. No matter which one or ones you have been diagnosed with (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, Celiac disease, Chrohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Sjögrens, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves disease, etc., I am sure that the time that led up to your diagnosis was incredibly difficult.

Then it came—the diagnosis that changed your life and meant that you could finally start on the road to recovery—and yet, here you are still looking for a way to feel better.

Before I received my own initial autoimmune diagnosis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis followed by Celiac disease a couple of years later), I was a vibrant, active woman who was a personal trainer, avid runner and weight lifter. To say I was active would have been an understatement. Suddenly I was getting sick all of the time. I was exhausted and could not think straight. My body seemed to constantly be attacking itself—waging a war within. In a span of just a few months I gained almost 60 pounds despite exercise and a reduced calorie diet. I knew that something was very wrong. So, after lots of blood work, I learned that I had autoimmune hypothyroidism. The doctor was going to prescribe Synthroid (hormone replacement) and this would restore my health. I wish the battle could have been so easily won.

Since that time I have spent countless hours studying nutrition (I am currently completing a master’s degree at the University of Bridgeport) and attending seminars on autoimmune disease and other functional medicine topics. What I have learned has enabled me to improve my health and the health of my clients. While each of us is biochemically unique, there are various commonalities amongst all of us with autoimmune disease.

While each type of autoimmune disease has unique symptoms and diagnostic measures, the same basic principles apply. Your body is attacking its own tissues because your immune system has decided these tissues are no longer part of you and are the enemy.

Stopping this attack is vital to regaining your health.

In autoimmune disease, the immune system becomes unbalanced. There are two sides to the immune system, TH-1 and TH-2.

The TH-1 side is our cell-mediated immune system that protects us from infections using white blood cells. The TH-2 side is the humoral immune system which works by using immunoglobulins such as the IgE response found in allergies. Proper treatment must always strive to balance out the immune system. How does this system 38

become unbalanced, you ask? There are naïve T cells that are an immature cell that may mature to become a TH-1 cell, a TH-2 cell or a T-regulatory cell. T-regulatory cells are important in maintaining balance of the immune system. For autoimmune disease we want to drive as many naïve T cells to become T-regulatory cells as possible.

This may be accomplished by increasing the body’s natural production of the antioxidant glutathione and through optimizing vitamin D levels.

Food Allergies and Sensitivities In autoimmune disease digestion issues abound. Food allergies and sensitivities are incredibly common and make your symptoms worse. Many with autoimmune disease will develop leaky gut syndrome, a condition where food that has not been fully broken down enters the blood stream through the small intestine. The result is that the body does not recognize the substance as food and is attacked as a foreign invader. The result is an IgG food reaction known as sensitivity (rather than an IgE reaction that is a true allergy). Symptoms may include gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, rashes, fatigue, and depression.

Further, the more you eat foods that you are sensitive too, the worse the leaky gut becomes. This can cause more reactions to different foods and even worsen the severity of the reactions. It is important to figure out which foods are safe and which are not. Often people will react to the foods that they eat most frequently and often say that they cannot live without this food. Feeling this “addiction” to the food is often a sign of sensitivity. An elimination diet or food allergy/sensitivity testing can help you to determine which foods are best for you. Common foods that trigger reactions are gluten, dairy, soy, nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers), nuts and seeds, and eggs.

Once you have determined what foods you can and cannot safely eat it is important to repair the gut. L-glutamine, an amino acid that serves as the primary fuel for the small intestine is vital in this process. During this time it is also important to eliminate any bacterial or yeast infections in the digestive track and then use preand probiotics to rebalance the beneficial microflora in the gut.

Exercise Often the last thing that people want to do when they are not feeling well is exercise. With autoimmune disease it is imperative that you move to stay healthy, though doing too much can also be counterproductive. Finding a balance is crucial to increasing your energy and regaining your health. I am a big advocate of shorter bouts of intense exercise rather than long duration, low intensity exercise. Remember, before starting any exercise program it is important to always get clearance from your doctor.

It has been proven that high intensity exercise can help to: • Increase growth hormone release helping to decrease body fat levels, improve recovery, increase lean muscle mass, and increase bone density • Release endorphins which make us feel great and decrease pain • Minimize the stress response • Increase production of the neurotransmitters serotonin (improves mood) and dopamine (improves focus and motivation) • Increase insulin receptor sensitivity improving blood sugar levels, decreasing cholesterol levels, and improving energy • Enhance our immune system • Increase nitric oxide release which decreases blood pressure, aids in recovery, and improves blood flow bringing oxygen and nutrients to the brain and other body cells.

This improves tissue repair, increases energy, improves brain function, and decreases neurodegeneration. In addition to

intense exercise, I also recommend some sort of calming type of exercise. This may include yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, or even a gentle flexibility program. This can be done to help decrease stress levels or to help you recover from more intense workouts.

Of course, it is important to listen to your body. When we push too long and too hard we can easily over train. This can lead to fatigue, injury, and immune system breakdown. It is vital to balance intense exercise with rest for optimal results. If you have over trained you may notice that you are unable to recover from workouts or perhaps cannot even complete your workout. Your performance may decrease or you may become injured. Many who over train find that they lose their motivation to exercise and can become depressed or irritable. Physically, you may lose or gain weight, lose strength, have a decreased sex drive, and women may lose their menstrual cycle.

Fighting Morning Fatigue Many with autoimmune disease also find that their cortisol rhythm is not normal.

Cortisol, a stress hormone released by the adrenals should be highest in the morning to help you wake up. It should then slowly decline throughout the day to allow you to fall asleep at night. Many people find that they have a difficult time waking up and require caffeine to get started. They have no appetite for breakfast, are not motivated in the morning, and their energy levels are the lowest for the first hour of their day. These are all signs of an abnormal cortisol awakening response. Early morning exercise can help to increase morning cortisol levels and restore a proper circadian rhythm. It is also possible that you may find that you have a difficult time falling asleep at night. This may indicate elevated evening cortisol levels.

A four point salivary cortisol analysis is beneficial for establishing improper cortisol rhythms.

Winning the Battle While your autoimmune disease can never be truly cured, remission is often possible. The war within requires attention to both nutrition and exercise to help create a balanced immune system to thwart your body’s attacks. These weapons are empowering for many, though daunting for some.

I have witnessed many clients struggle through the ups and downs of autoimmunity, but in using your new arsenal, peace within your body is actually possible.
