hy are we so afraid to ask for what we want in life? For most of us, it’s the fear of rejection. We hate to hear the word “no” and we take it so personally. I believe part of the reason is because as children we hear the word no so often; it becomes ingrained in our soul as painful and something to be avoided at all cost. But what does it really mean when someone tells us no? All it really means is that we’re still in the same place as when we started – not better off, but not worse off either. So that means that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Asking for something that we want can sometimes be seen as taking a risk. And in order to be successful, we know that we have to take risks. It truly scares me to think of all the outcomes that could have happened and all of the things I could have had, but I was too afraid to ask. When you start to contemplate this, it will become more painful NOT to ask for what you want, than it is to take the risk of asking.

Another dilemma I often have and also see in others is knowing when to give up asking for what you want after repeatedly hearing no. There is a part of me that says, “never give up”, because I do believe that people really want to say yes to you eventually, or they get tired of saying no! And if you give up before they do say yes, you’ll never really know if you could have gotten what you were asking for. A marketing study done at Notre Dame University found the following statistics: 94% of all salespeople quit after the fourth sales call, but 60% of all sales are made AFTER the fourth call! How many sales were lost because people stopped asking? Many of us just need to learn how to ask for what we want. Here are some surefire tips to get you started: 1. Expect that you will receive what you are asking for.

2. Make sure the person you are asking is the decision maker.

3. Be clear and specific.

4. Be persistent.

5. Don’t give up.

Most of the time someone tells you “no”, it has nothing to do with you personally. They could be having a bad day, they could be low on funds that month, there may not be enough trust or rapport in the relationship yet or they may not understand what you are asking for. None of these reasons is remotely personal, yet we tend to take it that way. Life is short; it’s time to start asking for what we want!

Myths about Laser Therapy

hen thinking of lasers, most people think of spy gadgets, star wars weapons and hair removal. But for years, lasers have been predominately used for a number of medical treatments including hair restoration. Lasers and hair? Yes. Despite the confusion and misconceptions about laser therapy, it has proven to be a major success.

Here are 3 myths associated with laser hair therapy and the truth behind them: 1. Laser treatments will burn or hurt.

It’s a common misconception that all lasers produce heat and a burning sensation. For the purpose of hair loss therapy, the type of lasers used are called “cold lasers”. It treats the skin by absorbing the light and does not heat the skin.

2. Laser therapy will work for anyone.

Although, many patients consider laser hair therapy to restore lost hair, it is more commonly used to drastically thicken and maximize the existing hair. This method works exceptionally well with improving the visibility of thinning hair.

Are You Prepared for a Disaster?

T

here are so many things in life we prepare for, such as graduations, weddings and the birth of a child. Yet there are other things in life we take no thoughts to, and if a disaster should occur, it would be completely tragic. If we live in a Regional area that is not prone to many natural disasters, we don’t give a second thought to the preservation of our belongings, documents and memories. But one thing we do forget is that fire is no respecter of person, geographic region or season. It could happen when we least expect it.

Awareness is the First Step Do you realize that organizing and preparing for disaster can save your life or the lives of your family members? In 2004, a market research firm called Wirthlin and the American Red Cross did a survey. They found that sixty-seven percent of all Americans believe that it is very important to take steps in preparing for a catastrophe.

But that awareness hasn’t propelled them into action to become prepared, because only two in ten individuals feel prepared for the catastrophe.

Back in June of 2011, I don’t believe the residents of Springfield, MA expected, nor were prepared for, the tornado that swept through their community. Although the deaths were low, the damage was extensive as it tore apart 39 miles of communities.

FEMA has recorded that since 1950, there have been 20 major disasters and 11 emergencies declared. Since I was born in 1957, this covers my lifetime up to this point. I can say that I have fortunately not been affected by these disasters or emergencies. But there are many that ccould have.

So what is the reason for this gap between being aware that it is necessary to be prepared for disaster, and the actual implementation for your family? Research has found two things. One is instruction and the other is organization. They know being prepared is important and even necessary but they don’t know the exact steps that should be taken to be effectively prepared. Then, those that have those instructions on preparation are not organized enough to begin the process. Families think, “I know where my lanterns or flashlights are.” But when the time comes to need them, they find there are no working batteries. Or if they live in a home that has a well, they don’t know the steps that need to be taken to have water to at least flush their toilets when they lose electricity.

Types of Disasters According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the American Red Cross (ARC) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) there are more than 35 different kinds of disasters.

But they fall into three main categories: natural or weather-related disasters, man-made disasters, and acts of terrorism. Being prepared for each is similar because the outcomes are the same. When the power goes down and you have no electricity, and hence no mode 10

of communication, it doesn’t matter if it was a hurricane that caused it or a terrorist attack. Your situation is still the same. You are without electricity and communication.

Be Prepared and Organized Many individuals who have experienced disasters in their homes wish they knew then what they know now. They would have been more prepared with important documents or having a grab and go bag. They would have prepared their family with a designated person to call so that each family member could call that person to give the update on their well-being and their whereabouts.

Many individuals don’t really realize what their home owners insurance policy covers and find out when the disaster occurs.

By then it could be too late. Did you know that the President must declare a State of Emergency before Federal monies can be distributed? And who knows how long that process is before you could see some provision.

Or many individuals who have lost it all to a flood, tornado or hurricane, look back over their belongings and realize those are only “things”, and “things” are replaceable. But losing their precious memories are not replaceable and they wish they had taken precautions to preserve those memories.

So to sum it up, here are some reasons why it is critical that your family be prepared for disaster.

• You can protect your family from harm • Ensure that your possessions are protected • Be informed, have a strategy and plan and be ready to take action • Have a plan on how to communicate, evacuate or escape from a disaster • Prevent as best as possible destruction to your home • Be ready and prepared to deal with any natural or unnatural disaster • Have your essential and important documents organized • Recover from disaster quickly Don’t wait until disaster strikes to wish you prepared your family. Begin now, have it all in place, and rest knowing you have done all you could possibly have done to have your family be protected if a disaster should occur. Many of the readers of this magazine have probably already adopted a holistic lifestyle for themselves. There’s not much question anymore in the general medical community that doing so helps us live longer and healthier lives.

Thirty years ago when I graduated from vet school, there were no readily available commercial raw foods. Vaccinations were given annually (or more often). Reliable natural, holistic veterinary care was hard to find.

Barbara from Greenwich asked: ”I have a 10 week old Golden Retriever. I think she was vaccinated for parvo and distemper at the shelter before I adopted her. I want to minimize vaccinations but my vet says she needs more. What shots should I get for her?”

Thanks for asking, Barbara. I’m so glad to hear that you want to minimize your new pup’s immunizations. In most individuals, one vaccination after 14-16 weeks of age is sufficient. This will vary based on the strength of her immune system. You can measure her response to the immunization with a blood test called a vaccine titer. These can be done at any time, but it is best to wait at least a few weeks. Because even one vaccine can potentially be harmful, I personally don’t vaccinate my pets except as required by law.

What can I do??”

Hello Karen. The first thing I do in my practice with overweight cats is to stop the dry food. Doing so will dramatically decrease Roscoe’s carbohydrate load. This step alone may be enough. You should then engage him in play as much as possible. Any amount of 12

Melody from Rockport ME writes: “Hi, my 7 year old German Shepherd has pancreatic insufficiency so he’s on a low fat diet from the vet. He is always getting itchy staph infections on his lower belly. He also gets major irritation around his nipples- specifically the ones closest to his neck. I’m currently giving him green tripe as well as an enzyme supplement. Can you suggest anything for his skin issues due to his low fat diet?”

Hi Melody. Without knowing the specifics of his medical condition, it’s impossible to answer completely. Is the enzyme controlling his symptoms? Is his weight OK? Does he have a history of pancreatitis? Congratulations for having integrated tripe into his diet. This is a great natural source for many of the nutrients that he needs. Despite his low fat diet, I’d consider gradually integrating an omega-3 fatty acid into his diet. In addition, a high quality probiotic is essential. Start working with a trained vet homeopath. This is critical to optimizing the energetic dys-equilibrium that allowed his pancreatic insufficiency and skin problems to develop. Doing so will allow him to be the best that he can be.

Michael in Odessa, FL asks: “My vet says that he practices holistically. Is this different than being a vet homeopath?”

Hello Michael, Holistic is very different from homeopathic. The holistic practitioner evaluates the whole patient before diagnosing or treating. That’s it. This is in contrast to reductionistic docs who reduce the body to its parts. They consider skin problems to be distinct from liver problems which are separate from eye conditions, etc. Many modalities are used. The American Holistic Veterinary Medicinal Association (ahvma.org) members practice acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, drug therapy, and herbal therapy. Even “conventional” vets who prescribe strong and potentially harmful drugs may call themselves holistic. One doctor may even use a mixture of several modalities. Homeopathy, on the other hand, is a distinct subset of holistic medicine. It is considered the ultimate holistic modality. It can’t be properly practiced without taking the entire patient into account. Every mental, emotional, physical and even biochemical parameter is taken into account. Vet homeopaths prescribe energetically-based homeopathic medicines which address the underlying process causing all of the problems.

Maintaining Immune Health in Our Children as They Return to School

he end of summer is always bittersweet… it’s been such a joy to watch our children run around carefree through the summer months… watching them get dirty and wet, and listen to their infectious laughter. During the summer months, we tend to eat lots of fresh produce which can help to improve our overall health.

We’re also much more active and we tend to sweat out a lot of toxins. For some of us, we also spend time in salt water which can be very healing. Just being in the sun and in nature can promote our health greatly.

• Preservatives and processed food: If it comes in a box or package, it very likely has some preservatives. Preservatives are difficult to break down in the body which means that they stay in the body and contribute to inflammation and disease over time.

• Processed dairy: Some people do well with a natural dairy source, but for many dairy can be mucous-producing. If we tend to have sinus issues or are prone to colds and respiratory problems during the fall and winter months, avoiding dairy can be very helpful.

But as always is the case, as school begins, our children re-enter into the Petri dish of fall and winter in New England. They start to have a runny nose. For some, they complain of belly aches... and the onset of colds and viruses begin. This tends to be so common for some that it can feel like part of the ritual of beginning school every fall. Is there a way for us to stop the cycle? In fact, there are many things we can do that can help to promote our immune health.

Here is a list of foods that can be helpful in promoting a stronger immune system:

The standard American diet is becoming more and more correlated with illness today. When we eat a diet that is largely inflammatory, not only do we create an environment in our body that leads to disease but also we weaken our immune system on a day-to-day basis. Even the common cold can be food related. It’s not the food specifically that causes the cold, but rather, it’s the food that weakens our immune system and then we are more affected by our environment and are more susceptible to colds, viruses, and other wintry illnesses.

So how can we eat to strengthen our immune system? The first step is to understand what foods are inflammatory and what foods are not. Here is a basic list of inflammatory foods: • Grain, especially Gluten: Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and sometimes oats.

• Refined sugar/artificial sweeteners: By reducing refined sugar, we can improve our immune system and our general health greatly. Here are some natural sweeteners that are better options: Raw honey, pure maple syrup, coconut or palm sugar, and Stevia.

• Eat lots of vegetables: There is a very helpful list that can be found on the internet called, “Clean 15, Dirty Dozen.” When you ‘Google’ this list, you can find a list of foods that are less harmful to eat when they are non-organic and a list of foods that really should be organic because of how much spraying of pesticides is involved. Nowadays, you can find some fun vegetable snacks available at most natural grocers, such as roasted kale or small packages of roasted seaweed.

• Eat local and fresh fruit: Fruit carries many important enzymes to help aid the body’s immune system. Fruit is a great snack option for our children to substitute for other more processed options.

• Drink lots of water: If we can substitute fruit juice and other drinks with water, we have achieved the greatest goal. By increasing our water intake, we can promote drainage and improve our health.

• Eat more protein: If we are limited in protein intake, it can affect our learning and focus. Unless you are a vegetarian, natural protein is a great option for snacks. Today, there are many forms of natural beef and turkey jerky that you can find at Whole Foods Market and other natural grocers. These are always fun options for snacks that don’t need to be refrigerated.

• Nuts and seeds always make great snacks: They carry many healthy nutrients and can fill us up when we are craving less healthy options. One great snack option is making trail mix for our children which include varied nuts, seeds, and some dried fruit. On a side note, some of us may not be aware of the inflammatory effects of peanuts. A great substitute for peanut butter is Sun Butter, made from sunflower seeds. It is has a similar consistency and tastes great!

As we embark on this journey of health for our children, it is helpful to note that our children will tend to eat healthier if we embrace the process as well. For many of us adults, chronic pain is an issue as well as other types of illness. These issues are typically inflammatory. By reducing inflammatory foods in our diet, and in general, in our kitchen, we can reduce our pain and improve our health as well as become greater role models to our children.

hildren are as individual in their healthcare needs as adults, and there is never one answer for every condition in every child. Knowing what works and what doesn’t work for your child is the key to being able to successfully treat them with home remedies, and to knowing when to get medical care. It’s a balance that parents need to figure out for each of their children.

If pain persists, especially with fever despite home treatment, call your PCP.

In this digital age, there are many ways for parents to research and make informed decisions on childcare topics such as childbirth, breastfeeding, wellness, vaccination, circumcision, nutrition, discipline, and education, among others. But deciphering what is real can sometimes be a challenge. Parents should consider seeking information from practitioners they trust who are well versed in the many aspects of pediatric healthcare.

A good herb for URI’s, bronchitis and sinusitis is Pelargonium (Umcka cold care). For cough and flu like symptoms, try elderberry syrup, or make an Ayurvedic tea with ginger, licorice powder, black pepper and raw honey.

Alternative practitioners offer the least invasive options that most conventional or western medical practices are not well versed in. Alternative and holistic practitioners include naturopathic doctors, advanced practice nurses (APRNs) specializing in pediatrics, midwives, and practitioners specific to children’s treatments such as chiropractors who are certified in pediatrics, nutritionists, counselors, and social workers.

Many natural remedies can help treat conditions at home and prevent a trip to the doctors.

Let’s discuss some of the most common childhood health issues and the natural remedies.

Ear Infections, Upper Respiratory Infections (URI’s) and Sore Throats The swelling and buildup of fluid in the middle ear can cause the Eustachian tube to block and not drain properly to the back of the throat and can lead to pain. Common causes are allergies, viruses, bacteria or inflammation in the sinuses, throat and neck. Ear infections often resolve without the use of antibiotics.

Tips to use at home: 1) Warm compress to the affected ear.

2) Cut back on dairy products because they can cause excess mucus production. 3) Several drops of a good quality garlic-mullein oil to the affected ear repeated up to 2-3 times day. 4) If necessary, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain relief.

Chronic ear infections in children often improve with chiropractic adjustments or cranial sacral therapy to help increase drainage of the Eustachian tube.

Homeopathic Remedies: • Homeopathic Aconite napellus and Homeopathic Belladonna are both great for ear infections with fever.

• Homeopathic Chamomilla homeopathic remedy is always indicated when pain is unbearable and the child is angry, impatient and cannot be pleased. The child will usually feel better when they are continuously carried or rocked briskly.

• Homeopathic Calcarea carbonica is a great remedy for ear infections that follow a cold, usually with kids that sweat very easily, especially during sleep. Kids that need this remedy can have anxious worries about the future and will try to avoid milk.

• Homeopathic Kali bichromicum is good remedy for ear infections when kids complain of stinging pains, and/or intense itching or tickling inside the ear that doesn’t stop.

• Homeopathic Hepar sulphuris is for chronic ear infections with extreme sensitivity to touch and cold air. They like to have their head covered to keep warm and complain of very sharp pains.

Often the ear will have foul-smelling discharges.

If pain persists with ear infections, especially with fever despite home treatment, or if you see bloody discharge coming from the ear(s) call your PCP. First Aid Remedies Bumps and minor rashes: • Calendula, comfrey and chamomile salve promotes healing and has anti-microbial properties.

• Ayurvedic neem oil can help with a variety of minor skin rashes.

• For bug bites always think of Apple Cider vinegar to help remove the itch.

• The aloe plant is great to have around because of its healing properties.

Sunburn: • Homeopathic Cantharis vesicatoria is a good remedy for too much sun and the pain associated with 2nd degree burns.

• Homeopathic Apis mellifica for stinging bug bites that are red swollen and hot.

Can Diet Impact Our Genetic Lineage?

W

hen does a patient become a parent? For me, as a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, this precious moment has nothing to do with the religious or moral discussion surrounding when life begins. Instead, it is the moment when a patient starts to make her future baby the priority.

Many of our patients adhere to rigorous medical treatment; perhaps more impressive are the patients who make important lifestyle changes to their daily routines for the good of the family they want to have.

Epigenetics is the study of how external and environmental factors affect genes. While many recent studies link our origins and genetics, scientists are still learning just how far reaching the gestational experience is to determining who we are. Our understanding of genetics has resulted in highly technical and advanced procedures such as Comprehensive Chromosome Screening (SelectCCS), as well as how something as seemingly simple as diet can impact our genetic lineage. Daily choices can affect our overall health, as well as the health of an embryo and the life of a child.

At Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT), we encourage all of our patients to improve their overall preconception health through their nutrition, stress management and sleeping habits. We even offer a preconception checklist to help patients prepare for conception.

Our genetic potential can be optimized through lifestyle choices. Obesity, diabetes, allergies, asthma, heart disease, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, schizophrenia, aptitude for early childhood development and even the likelihood of cancer have all been linked to the habits of Mom during pregnancy. Habits such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, and eating too much sugar can also impact a patient’s ability to get pregnant and to stay pregnant full term. Improving patients’ overall health is not just about eliminating detrimental foods and drugs; it is also about incorporating important nutrients (e.g., folic acid, lean protein, calcium, vitamins B and D), getting moderate exercise and managing stress.

Nutrition and Diet When considering nutrition and diet, there are two areas to consider: weight and nutrients.

Weight management is not only about appearance; it affects our bodies’ health and vulnerability to diseases such as diabetes, heart 18

disease and high cholesterol. Extra body weight can be a result of a poor diet, as well as metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance or diabetes that affect the body’s hormone production.

Elevated insulin contributes to weight gain, especially increased abdominal weight. Weight loss and maintenance is much more challenging with increasing insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is found in 60 percent of obese women and 40 percent of non-obese women. Another interesting fact is that 80 - 90 percent of type 2 diabetics are obese. Obesity can affect male fertility through changes in hormonal profiles, semen parameters and scrotal temperatures.

For female patients who are overweight, a 5 - 10 percent loss in body weight has been shown to not only improve insulin and reduce diabetes risk, but also improve fertility by resuming ovulation. It also has lasting effects in the genetic predisposition of babies.

Children of diabetics are more likely to become diabetic themselves.

Eating habits and diseases such as diabetes and insulin resistance are complicated, which is why RMACT has two nutritionists on staff. It’s not enough to simply advise a patient to lose weight or eat better; they need support. Our nutritionists offer classes and oneon-one counseling to coach and teach patients how to eat healthy.

These sessions offer life-long lessons for themselves and their future families. Also, our nutritionists, fertility nurses and physicians communicate about the patients’ progress, including blood sugar levels, cholesterol and body mass index (BMI), as part of their comprehensive infertility treatment.

In addition to weight management, a healthy diet includes a wide range of nutrients that come from lean protein, vegetables, fruit and complex carbohydrates. Here are some of the foods that we recommend patients incorporate into their diet: • Folic acid (citric fruit, fortified breads, lentils) and use a supplement or a multivitamin (800 mcg of folic acid) • Calcium (yogurt, milk) • Iron (meat, spinach, beans) • Omega-3 (low-mercury fish such as salmon) • Drink water (not soda and minimize caffeine) External Toxins External toxins also affect our genes and gene expression.

Some, like alcohol, are well known; others, such as cleaning

products, are more obscure. The single most important step toward becoming healthier for men and women is to quit smoking. This is good for the intended parents’ health and it is imperative for egg and sperm health.

Prior to conception, women should limit their drinking to less than three servings of alcohol per week, and men should have less than six servings per week to avoid damage to sperm. Household chemicals, such as garden supplies and cleaning products, should be handled with caution. For example, wear gloves. Patients should also avoid heavy metals such as lead and mercury, which can be found in some foods (e.g., tuna) and in our environment.

Women should also lower their caffeine intake to less than 150 mg per day or one 8-oz. cup of coffee. Lastly, men should avoid placing electronics such as laptop computers on their laps.

Stress Management Stress can manifest in several physical conditions, including high blood pressure, suppression of the immune system, irritability, anxiety, depression, anger management issues, and even infertility.

Stress management is important for each patient’s health, and it has a surprising effect on pregnancies and baby’s health.

There is a wide range of approaches to managing stress. Some patients can release their stress by being physically active; even just 30 minutes per day with activities such as walking and yoga can be effective. Other patients benefit from counseling and peer support groups.

At RMACT, we also offer Mind-Body coaching, which can help couples with communication and empower individuals to focus on the positive. By dedicating just 15 – 20 minutes per day to MindBody exercises, patients can reverse the effects of daily stresses.

Stress management is helpful for couples when they are trying to start a family, and these are tools that can help throughout life, including when the baby arrives.

RMACT’s licensed clinical social worker, Melissa Kelleher, says that breathing techniques, body scans and self-guided meditation are all examples of ways to elicit the relaxation response. They take only minutes, yet they have an immediate physiological effect on the body; its stress hormone production and long-term effects of stress by-products such as high blood pressure. There are several smart phone applications that can assist in Mind-Body practices, such as “Headspace.”

All of these lifestyle changes to our diet, stress management and exposure to toxins can have a positive effect on our health and to our future generation in just 90 days. It only takes three months for patients to improve their chance of a successful fertility treatment cycle and also give their baby the best chance of being healthy.

Why You Should Watch Out For Genetic Mutations

ave you ever felt something was off in your body but were told over and over everything is “normal?” This is the case for so many people, who then can start to believe their symptoms are all in their head. However, what if there is something doctors are missing, something that may explain conditions such as anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, infertility, cardiovascular disease and more? Well, sometimes there is. Genetic mutations are a common cause for disease within the body, however are rarely tested for. The reason for the infrequent testing is because many people have genetic mutations that do not affect their health. However, when things just don’t seem to be adding up, looking into genetic mutations can help shed light onto the underlying cause of disease.

MTHFR: One important gene to note is MTHFR, standing for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. MTHFR is a gene required by every cell within our bodies to turn folate into its active form, methyfolate (or more specifically, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate). This reaction is one step in the methylation cycle required for neurotransmitter production, detoxification, homocysteine regulation, DNA synthesis and more.

Because of its necessity for so many enzymatic reactions in the body, it’s no wonder that alternations in the gene’s function can lead to disease.

Two of the most common mutations in the MTHFR gene are C677T and A1298C, both of which are quite common. Mutations can be heterozygous, meaning one impaired copy, or homozygous, meaning both copies are altered. This slows down the speed of the methylation cycle, and to what extent is dependent on which mutation is present and whether it is hetero or homozygous. Having a homozygous mutation can slow the methylation cycle down by as much as 70%. The consequences of this vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors including the rest of the genome, nutritional status, diet, and life stressors.

Infertility: One of the key jobs of the methylation cycle is to produce DNA. If the body has inadequate levels of folate, or if folate is unable to be utilized, DNA synthesis is greatly impaired. Many foods are now fortified with folic acid, a synthetic version of folate, in an attempt to decrease infertility and birth defects caused by folate deficiency such as spina bifida. Additionally, supplementing with folic acid as part of a preconception or prenatal protocol serves the same purpose. In a women whose MTHFR gene is working optimally, this supplementation is beneficial. However, what about for women with a MTHFR mutation? Not only is supplementing with folic acid not beneficial, 20

but it can actually cause harm to both mother and baby. The reason for this is the pathway is already working at a decreased rate, and giving the body this synthetic version of folate actually makes the cycle work even slower. Due to the importance of this cycle on DNA synthesis, it should make sense why this is detrimental when trying to have a baby. In fact, many women who suffer from infertility, recurrent miscarriages, or who have babies born with birth defects do so because of a MTHFR mutation, and unfortunately this is oftentimes never discovered or addressed.

Because of the importance of the methylation cycle on fetal development, it is crucial to be tested for such mutations if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant in the future. If you have a mutation in this gene, it doesn’t mean you cannot have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby, but it does mean you need to work closely with your physician in order to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients.

Cardiovascular Disease: Sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and family history of cardiovascular disease are all risk factors for conditions such as hypertension, high blood sugar, strokes and embolisms. However, what about when people “do everything right” but still have these conditions? While a lot of it boils down to the lifestyle we live, another component is in fact our genes. As a physician, we must take both lifestyle and genetics into consideration when helping optimize ones health.

One of the methylation cycle’s many jobs is to convert homocysteine into methionine. Methionine then goes on to form S-Adenosyl-methionine, also known as SAM, which is the body’s main methyl donor. This is crucial for all biochemical pathways within the body because it is used to turn our genes on and off, making sure our biochemical pathways are working when and where they should be.

When the body is unable to form methylfolate because of a genetic mutation, the rate at which homocysteine is turned into SAM is decreased, thus leading to increased levels of homocysteine. The clinical implication of this results in a thickening of the blood, thus predisposing a person to form clots. In this situation, a person is at increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, and embolisms. Additionally, if a woman is pregnant and has elevations in homocystine, she is more likely to have miscarriages because clots can form in the vessels supplying nutrients to the developing fetus.

Homocysteine levels can be checked in the blood to assess your risk for cardiovascular disease. If the underlying cause is a MTHFR mutation, certain nutrients can be given to bypass the altered enzyme and thus get the methylation cycle running at optimal speed. Doing so will drive down the homocysteine levels, helping to decrease the genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Mood Regulation: By now you are probably getting the impression of just how important this one biological pathway is. Not only is it necessary for pregnancy and cardiovascular disease, but also for mood regulation. In fact, a mutation in this cycle is not only a huge contributor to why so many people suffer from conditions such as anxiety, depression, and panic attacks, but it is also a reason why people fail to get better on conventional medications for such conditions.

Ok, so now for a little more biochemistry. Without the conversion of folate into methyfolate, there will be a reduced production of neurotransmitters. The body uses neurotransmitters to regulate mood. For examples, we use serotonin and dopamine to make us feel happy, and we use GABA and glycine to help calm down our system to reduce anxiety. Having a balanced mood relies upon the body being able to regulate these neurotransmitters in order to adapt to life’s various situations. When this system is thrown off, it can cause us to get stuck in one mood vs. the other.

For example, some people lack adequate levels of relaxing neurotransmitters, and thus suffer from anxiety. On the other hand, people low in excitatory neurotransmitters lack the chemicals responsible for happiness, and therefore suffer from depression.

While medications can be given to drive these neurotransmitters in a particular direction, it is not always getting to the root cause of disease. In fact, because the body is unable to process these hormones, medications can sometimes make people feel worse.

Providing our bodies with the correct nutrients needed to bypass the impaired enzymatic reaction allows for better regulation of neurotransmitters. Doing so can help certain medications work better, or can even make it so a person’s body no longer needs them.

Detoxification: Most of us have become familiar with detoxifcation, but have you ever heard of glutathione? Glutathione is the bodies’ strongest antioxidant, meaning it is the most important nutrient for detoxing the body. Perhaps you are one of the people who seems overly sensitive to chemicals. For example, I often have people tell me that they cannot tolerate supplements or medications, or they can only take half the regular dose. Similarly, patients sometimes tell me they can only tolerate one beer while their friends can have drink after drink and feel fine. When I hear about sensitivities such as these, I always think of MTHFR as being a potential cause. As the story goes, when this enzyme is not working as quickly as it should, everything in that pathway gets slowed down, including the production of glutathione, and thus the bodies’ ability to detox.

While we live in a very toxic world, this mutation has huge implications on how a person will feel. Put plainly, he or she will feel, well, toxic. This is often the case when I see people dealing

with symptoms such as fatigue, pain, brain fog, dizziness, migraines and so forth, all while being told over and over that everything is “normal.” Usually everything appears normal because genetic mutations are rarely looked at as a cause of disease.

While correcting the underlying nutrient deficiency is important, it is equally important to do so slowly. The reason for this is because since the body has had a hard time detoxifying for so many years, there is an increased toxic burden. If we push this cycle too quickly, it can overload the system and make a person feel even worse. Because of this, it is important to work with a physician who understands this process in order to keep the body safe while addressing the issue.

Histamine: There are a lot of factors that predispose people to allergies, both environmental and food related. The integrity of the digestive tract, total body burden of toxins, and the state of the immune system all play a roll.

Another major component is the bodies’ ability to regulate histamine. Histamine is the chemical responsible for allergic reactions. It is histamine that can cause a person’s throat to close up from eating peanuts, sinus congestion when exposed to pollens, or swelling of the skin if in contact with poison ivy. Many medications for allergies work on degrading or blocking the release of this chemical in order to control symptoms.

In addition to histamine being the regulator of allergies, histamine can also negatively affect people who have histamine intolerance, particularly when the body is exposed to excess amounts from food. The way allergies and histamine intolerance differ is that allergies are caused by a release of histamine after exposure to a particular allergen. Alternatively, histamine intolerance happens when people consume foods high in histamine but cannot properly break it down.

Symptoms between the two are similar, but it is harder to realize when histamine intolerance is contributing to symptoms or conditions. For example, when someone goes outside, finds their car covered in pollen, and starts sneezing, the correlation between histamine and symptoms is quite clear. However, when histamine is increased in the body from foods, it can contribute to symptoms of nausea, migraines, asthma, fatigue, itch, swelling, urinary frequency, brain fog etc., all of which can be harder to recognize.

mutation. The reason for this is that methylation is required for its degradation. Lab testing can be done to see what environmental or food triggers you are allergic to. From there, you can work with your physician to create a customized nutrition program to help your body avoid your histamine triggers.

And, while anyone with allergies can tell you, avoidance isn’t always a realistic option.

There are specific nutrients available that can be used to help your body break down and process the histamine in order to minimize the symptoms and return your health.

Testing and Treatment: Because methylation is so crucial in the body, it should be no surprise that the list of conditions and symptoms associated with a MTHFR mutation can go on and on. The first step towards bettering your health is to find a doctor who is educated on the topic, because surprisingly information on MTHFR is yet to be common knowledge amongst the medical field. A quick saliva test can be performed to see if you have certain mutations. If so, the good thing is it can be a relatively easy fix to correct the underlying problem, even though it all seems overwhelming and complicated.

Additionally, it can bring some piece of mind knowing that your symptoms are not “all in your head.”

So, what happens after finding out your genetic status? First and foremost, a crucial part of the treatment is to determine which mutations you have. This information is used by your physician to prescribe the proper nutrients your body needs to bypass the defective pathway. In a way, you can think of the slowed pathway as construction on the highway. It will slow down all of the traffic, which in turn can throw off the rest of your trip. Providing nutrients to bypass the pathway is like taking a detour on the highway, so rather than sitting bumper to bumper, you can just bypass it. While this doesn’t change the genetic makeup, it is a way of allowing the body to overcome the mutations.

Another aspect of treatment is nutrition.

Certain foods will make traffic back up even further, while others can help redirect your nutrients to the detour. Your diet plan should be individualized to you depending on what symptoms and conditions you are experiencing, as well as what mutations you have.

A Holistic Approach Discovering genetic mutations such as those affecting MTHFR allows your provider to get to the root cause of disease and can also help explain how many of your symptoms may be connected. In addition to look-

ing at genetics, we need to take a step back and look at how we are living in the environment in which we create for ourselves. The food we eat, the air we breathe, and the toxicities we expose ourselves to all contribute to how our body is able to cope with disease.

The goal of treatment is to not only correct the biochemical pathways affected by mutations, but to optimize a person’s health as a whole. Having a thorough evaluation by your physician is the best way to determine the appropriate treatment plan and start optimizing your health.

The Genetics of Perfectionism

rive. It is so necessary. Without it we do not have the motivation to accomplish our goals and aspirations. Yet, for many, it can get way out of control. Often referred to as a Type “A” personality, this type of person is often quite successful.

They are executives, doctors, lawyers, researchers, and other highly driven, successful individuals. And yet, this drive may also take a toll on their health. It may become a compulsion. It can lead to anxiety, repetitive thoughts, and sleep problems.

For many years there have been questions as to why we are the way that we are. Is it the way we are brought up by our parents, or is it more closely related to our nature? While the jury may still be out how much either may contribute, our genetics do hold some level of responsibility. The enzyme catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) is highly polymorphic. This means that many individuals have mutations in the gene, reflecting a change from the normal, wild type.

Why would this happen, you might ask? My guess is that it is likely a reflection of our society’s values. In this country, we push hard. Hard work and achievement are highly valued. The ability to take a step back, relax and enjoy time off is not often considered a priority. Consequently, when looking for a partner, we will often look for someone that will be a hard worker. This process is how we successfully change (evolve) our genetics over time. Someone without a COMT mutation may choose a spouse that has these characteristics. This gives their children a greater chance of possessing this characteristic and the gene. This would result in a child that either does not have the mutation or is perhaps heterozygous (one positive allele from dad and one negative allele from mom). Or perhaps one driven individual is attracted to another individual. In this case, if both were heterozygous, a child could be born with a wild type heterozygous or even homozygous status (both alleles contain the mutation).

The Function of COMT The primary purpose of the enzyme COMT is to breakdown neurotransmitters (the brain’s chemical messengers), including dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. Dopamine plays a major role in reward-motivated behavior. Low levels are associated with addiction. With addiction, individuals are looking for a way to increase their dopamine levels using their drug of choice. Destruction of the part of the brain (substantia nigra) that creates dopamine results in Parkinson’s disease and will result in a complete absence of this neurotransmitter. Dopamine may also be converted to an24

other neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is responsible for allowing us to concentrate and to be vigilant. It plays a role in our sympathetic nervous system. This system is our “fight or flight” system. It can elevate heart rate, increase blood pressure, and increase the amount of glucose in the blood. The body can then convert norepinephrine into epinephrine. Epinephrine also functions within the sympathetic nervous system. It is responsible for increased energy and excitement that is associated with the “fight or flight” state.

Having active mutations in COMT will cause increased levels of these neurotransmitters as they require COMT for proper breakdown. This means it is common for individuals to have too much of these neurotransmitters in their system. This can lead to changes in behavior and increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. While we certainly require each of these neurotransmitters for proper function, elevated levels may also be problematic. On the one side, the COMT mutation is associated with very good “executive function” and those with this gene are often well organized. However, this mutation is also highly correlated to obsessive compulsive disorder, though most people with will only have slight tendencies rather than the full blown disorder. COMT mutations can increase both anxiety and anger from the increased norepinephrine. Repetitive thoughts or actions can cause sleep issues and make it difficult to relax in general.

COMT Is Just One Enzyme When looking at genetics, it is very important to realize that looking at any one gene in isolation is not very helpful. The vast majority of genes that we look at are enzymes. Enzymes work to speed up reactions within a pathway. Pathways consist of lots of different reactions that work together using various enzymes. We can influence these items through diet and supplementation (called nutrigenomics) because they require help from cofactors to make them work appropriately. Cofactors are usually vitamins and minerals, though they can also be other compounds made in the body. In the case of COMT, the cofactors are magnesium and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe).

While initially it might make sense to simply dose up the cofactors, it is not that simple. You have to look at the rest of the pathway to see if there are other mutations that could be negatively (or positively) impacted by this. Many practitioners talk about genetics in relation to the methylation cycle and the amino acid homocysteine.

When homocysteine levels rise they increase one’s risk for heart disease, blood clots, miscarriage, and other health problems. To decrease homocysteine you need the vitamins folate, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin B12.

Folate and Vitamin B12 come in several forms and may be either methylated or unmethylated. Methylation simply refers to the addition of a single carbon group bonded to three hydrogens (CH3). Methylation is important for proper gene regulation, neurotransmitter production and metabolism, detoxification, breakdown of certain hormones, building immune cells (T cells and NK cells), DNA and histone synthesis, energy production, creation of the myelin sheath on nerve cells, and building and maintaining cell membranes. How many methyl donors (compounds containing methyl groups) one tolerates has a lot to do with genetics. Those with COMT mutations generally will tolerate fewer methyl groups. This is because with increased methylation comes increased production of neurotransmitters. These include dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine which must then be broken down by COMT. This leads to elevated levels of these three neurotransmitters which overwhelm a mutated COMT enzyme. Overmethylation symptoms include: irritability, anxiety, headache, nausea, insomnia, sore muscles, achy joints, acne, rash, palpitations, and migraines.

Methyl groups may be found in supplements including methylcobalamin (methyl B12), L-methylfolate, trimethylglycine (TMG), dimethylglycine (DMG), and SAM. It is possible to work with someone who practices nutrigenomics to help improve methylation even if you do have COMT mutations. This often can help decrease anxiety, anger and OCD symptoms associated with this mutation. Appropriate and careful dosing of specific vitamins and minerals can be used in conjunction with genetic testing through 23andme.com and other lab tests to confirm whether the mutation is active or not. It is so important to remember that while you may have a particular mutation, it requires an environmental influence (called epigenetics) to activate it. Activation may be temporary or permanent depending on how strong the epigenetic influence was.

The Estrogen Connection For females with the COMT mutation, estrogen metabolism is another associated problem. While many associate COMT almost exclusively with the breakdown of neurotransmitters, it also works in the estrogen pathway to break down estrogen in combination with the enzyme Phosphatidyl-

ethanolamine N-Methyltransferase (PEMT).

Mutations in one or both of these genes may cause estrogen dominance.

Estrogen dominance describes a state where there is increased estrogen usually because the body is unable to efficiently break it down. This can be caused by genetic mutations in COMT and PEMT, poor detoxification, or even chronic constipation.

Often this develops as a woman enters her 30s or 40s and can cause symptoms including decreased sex drive, irregular or abnormal menstrual periods, water retention, breast swelling and tenderness, fibrocystic breasts, headaches (often premenstrual), mood swings, weight gain, cold hands and feet, hair loss, thyroid dysfunction, sluggish metabolism, brain fog, memory problems, fatigue, sleep issues, and PMS. Estrogen dominance may also lead to allergies, autoimmune disorders, breast cancer, uterine cancer, infertility, ovarian cysts, and increased blood clotting, and may even accelerate the aging process.

For those with COMT mutations, there will often be a worsening of anxiety, anger and OCD symptoms in the two weeks prior to menstruation (post ovulation). This is because in addition to the work the enzyme needs to do in breaking down neurotransmitters, it becomes extra taxed trying to eliminate estrogen. For those that also have PEMT mutations in combination with COMT, the mood-based symptoms may be even greater.

Conclusion Despite the presence of genetic polymorphisms, it is possible to help correct these mood and estrogen metabolism problems using nutrigenomics and functional medicine. Certainly, supplementation with magnesium glycinate or malate may be helpful for those with COMT mutations, as will examining the function of the whole methylation pathway. This will allow appropriate supplementation with other needed cofactors in the pathway. Improving one’s diet to include less antibiotics and hormones by choosing organic grass fed meats and free range poultry; increased fiber through inclusion of vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains; increased antioxidant intake by consuming seven to 11 servings of fruits and vegetables per day; lean proteins found in fish, beans, nuts, seeds, eggs and poultry; and healthy fat consumption by including fish and fish oils, nuts, seeds, coconut products, and olive oil is also essential for improved mood and health.

The Truth About Non-GMO Soy: A Nutritional Powerhouse

Erika Dworkin No sooner did the FDA take the highly unusual step of allowing a health claim to be made for soy as a food in 1999, than it came under attack by a vocal minority of “concerned citizens”—some of whom were found to represent a narrow segment of the food industry threatened by soy’s profits. …. [C]onsiderable misinformation now contaminates the discussion of soy’s real impact on health.

Instead of enjoying the broad range of benefits, many aging individuals are unnecessarily fearful of consuming soy products.

o you believe that soy, a plant protein derived from the soybean (a legume), is unhealthy? Or are you just confused about whether it offers any health benefits? The controversy that arose after the FDA allowed a health claim for soy in 1999 resulted in substantial amounts of clinical research. Below is information (especially relevant for vegetarians, vegans, and post-menopausal women) that can help you decide whether including soy in your diet, as a food or dietary supplement, is right for you.

The FDA-Allowed Health Claim In April 2014, the FDA updated in the Code of Federal Regulations (21CFR101.82) its allowed health claim for soy related to coronary heart disease (CHD), which it describes as “one of the most common and serious forms of cardiovascular disease” that “refers to diseases of the heart muscle and supporting blood vessels.” According to the FDA, “diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol are associated with increased levels of blood total and LDL-cholesterol and, thus, with increased risk of CHD.” While the impact of high cholesterol on CHD [versus other factors, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) levels] is itself controversial, it is nevertheless important to note for purposes of this article that the FDA allows health claims similar to this model: “Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease.

One serving of [name of food] provides __ grams of soy protein.”

The claim does not reference soy isoflavones, discussed below.

The Many Soy Forms & The Importance of Organic/Non-GMO Whole soybeans, which must be consumed cooked, are rich in essential amino acids, B vitamins, vitamin K, minerals (potassium, magnesium, calcium, selenium, copper, iron, phosphorous, manganese), and fiber. Soy is available in many food forms and in supplements, including as: soy milk; soy protein powder; soy nuts; edamame; tofu; fermented soy products (miso, tempeh, natto); soy lecithin 26

(food/supplements); and soy isoflavones (supplement). It also can be “hidden” in refined ( forms of regularly consumed foods such as meat products, bakery goods, chocolate, and breakfast cereals.

Soy is one of five major GMO food crop varieties, the others being corn, canola, cotton, and sugar beets. GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms”, which refers to any food product that has been altered at the gene level. Specifically, scientists insert bacterial genes in GM plants, allowing them to survive an otherwise deadly dose of weed killer. GM crops thus have higher herbicide residues.

According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, animal studies prove that “GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health and are without benefit.” As of the writing of this article, the use of GMOs is prohibited in organic products. (USDA Blog, May 2013) It is most prudent to consume only organic/non-GMO soy.

The Soy Controversy Below are some of the principal anti-soy arguments and their scientifically supported counterarguments.

Myth #1 - Soy causes or increases the risk of cancer.

Soy contains isoflavones (genistein, daidzein), antioxidant polyphenols that are viewed as phytoestrogens (estrogens from plants) because of their molecular similarity to estradiol, one type of carcinogenic estrogen.

Estrogen influences cells through estrogen receptors. Soy critics focus on isoflavones’ action on estrogen receptors, failing to consider that the body has more than one type, each which affects the body differently. Until relatively recently, only one estrogen receptor (ER-alpha) had been discovered. Overexpression of ER-alpha has been implicated in various cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and colon cancer. In the late 1990s, scientists discovered a second estrogen receptor (ER-beta), expression of which appears to counteract many of the cancer-causing activities of ER-alpha. The discovery of ER-beta estrogen receptors, their cancer-inhibiting effects, and the preferential influence of isoflavones on these receptors, in addition to extensive human epidemiological and clinical studies, indicate a favorable soy isoflavone –cancer connection. Even the American Cancer Society recognizes that soy isoflavones have anti-estrogenic, antioxidant, and antiinflammatory properties (www.cancer.org, McCullough 2012), and

some studies show that isoflavones are breast cancer protective (JAMA 2009 Dec) (Eur J Cancer. 2005 Mar; enhances tamoxifen).

Soy might also lower the risk of other cancers, including prostate cancer (Urology 2004 Sept), colon cancer (Mol Cancer 2009 Nov; genistein/ indole-3-carbinol) (Am J Clin Nutr. 2009 Feb; colorectal cancer in postmenopausal women), and endometrial cancer (J Korean Med Sci 2013 Apr).

Myth #2 - Isoflavones disrupt sex hormones.

The phytoestrogens in soy primarily affect ER-beta estrogen receptors, which have been shown to inhibit the detrimental effects associated with hormonal imbalance (Med Hypotheses. 2006 Mar).

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “there is no conclusive evidence from animal, adult human, or infant populations that dietary soy isoflavones may adversely affect human development, reproduction, or endocrine function.” (AAP Policy Rev. May 2008) Moreover, “Literature reviews and clinical studies of infants fed soy protein-based infant formulas raise no clinical concerns with respect to nutritional adequacy, sexual development, thyroid disease, immune function, or neurodevelopment.” (AAP Policy Rev. May 2008).

Myth #3 – Soy causes thyroid dysfunction.

Following the announcement of the occurrence of goiter in a single infant on a pure soy diet (N Engl J Med. 1960 Feb), soy critics extrapolated the risk to the general population. While soy isoflavones inhibit an enzyme involved in thyroid hormone synthesis, they do not cause poor thyroid function in otherwise healthy individuals who have adequate iodine intake. (Thyroid 2010 July; Thyroid. 2007 Feb)

In considering whether to incorporate soy foods or supplements into your diet, consider all of the evidence, your doctor’s specific guidance, and whether a soy allergy or intolerance may be a factor.

While rarely life threatening, soy allergy/intolerance is common, especially among children, and can manifest as tingling in the mouth, eczema or other dermatitis, breathing difficulties, digestive problems, skin flushing, or swelling (www.mayoclinic.org).

Like fiber supplements and some medications, however, soy isoflavones may prevent absorption of some of the iodine normally used to make thyroid hormone. Those who frequently consume large amounts of soy thus may need slightly more iodine in their diets. (Note, however, that excess iodine can slow thyroid function.)

Also, soy can reduce the absorption of hypothyroid medications, and thyroid expert Stephen E. Langer, MD, recommends that hypothyroid patients minimize soy consumption “until their condition is corrected or supplemented with thyroid hormone.” Andrew Weil, MD, advises that a hypothyroid patient can safely eat one soy serving per day at least three hours apart from thyroid medication intake.

Clinically Supported Evidence of Soy Benefits While the soy food and supplements controversy continues (certain soy supplements have proven safe and effective in this writer’s clinical practice, and Julian Whitaker, MD, favors them, while Andrew Weil, MD, and the American Cancer Society feel that additional and long-term research is needed), ample scientific studies document that soy consumption provides benefits in connection with various health conditions, including: (1) Inflammation (linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease) (Cancer Causes Control 2013 Jun) (J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012 Sept); (2) Cardiovascular Disease (i.e., hypertension, atherosclerosis, reduced blood flow, high cholesterol/LDL) (Mol Aspects Med. 2010 Dec) (J. Nutr. 2000 Mar); (3) Menopausal Symptoms (Menopause 2011, Vol. 18, No. 7; mixed study results; more relief from supplements high in genistein and the daidzein metabolite S-equol) (J Med Food. 2003 Spring; soy foods/supplements); (4) Osteoporosis (Nutr Res. 2008 Jan) (Eur J Nutr. 2006 Sept); and (5) Kidney Disease (Renal & Urology News 2011 Dec) (Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2008)

The Most Valuable Equipment: The Mindset

By Ben Powers, ACC ver wish you could take your golf game to the next level? Imagine how much more fun you’d have and how proud you’d be if you could carve just a few strokes off your score! What if I said you could score 15 shots fewer by next weekend? Too good to be true, you say? Well, if I can do it, so can you!

The extraordinary week started on my birthday- May 16th of this spring. I’d been planning a golf outing with my girlfriend, Erin, my two brothers and my dad. We picked a perfect day and a beautiful Vermont golf course. We’d all been looking forward to it for some time, and I had been practicing hard since early April. I had high hopes for my round as we teed off just after 1pm.

Growing up, my focus was on anything but golf. Baseball, soccer, lacrosse, fishing, waterskiing, hiking. I loved playing outside and testing myself at new sports. My brothers and I would hit golf balls in the yard from time to time because my grandfather had always played, and we had his rusty old clubs out in the garage. But I never saw the appeal as a young guy. I never made any noticeable improvement and was frustrated more than satisfied. Other pastimes consumed me, and off I went to college.

I’m the type of guy who picks the hardest thing I can find. As a shy kid from Vermont, I wanted to see if I could hack it in the city. After college at UNH I got a job selling investment products in Boston. During the market crash in 2008, I had my work cut out for me. Despite also being transferred to a new territory that summer I figured out a way to hit a huge sales goal by the end of the year and take home a nice bonus. Live in the city, job in finance: Check! On to the next challenge.

I’d been doing some sailboat racing on the weekends in Newport, and met a few guys who sailed professionally. In 2009, I left Boston and tagged along on the pro tour: the Caribbean in the winter, Newport and the Med in the summer. I also spent time on the West coast, in the Middle East, Bali and South Africa. Again the underdog, I worked my butt off until I had won two national championships, a maxi yacht transatlantic race, and many local titles. Check!

By age 30, I’d competed at an elite level in both business and sports, and had found a way to win. I saw people around me who wanted these same experiences, so I got to work laying out a blueprint. Now I use that framework to coach people in sales, entrepreneurship and career transition, and I spend a lot more time on shore.

I love to ski, but when the snow melts in the Spring I’m still competitive and driven to take on a new challenge with the new season.

When Erin and I met a couple years ago, I was still a complete golf novice but eager to apply my winning formula. So I hit the driving range a few times in anticipation of playing with Erin, her brother and her dad. Even with practice, those were long, frustrating and embarrassing rounds for me. It seemed the more I wanted to play well and make a good impression, the lousier my performance.

I knew this wasn’t going to come easy, but then again that’s just how I like it.

I kept practicing and even hired an “inner game” coach to help me through what I knew to be my biggest opportunity: staying positive and motivated. I’d learned a valuable lesson that showed up many times in life: I wasn’t going to play well and THEN be happy, relaxed and confident. It needed to happen the other way around.

I cashed in again. After just a couple sessions on the range with my new mindful and “feel-based” approach, I straightened out my shots, learned to hit the ball further, and had myself so excited for the 2015 season that I treated myself to some new equipment - just in time for the Birthday Tournament!

Despite being so excited to play golf on a gorgeous spring day in my favorite place with my favorite people in the world, I would be tested yet again. My first shot was not straight- it went right. Way right. It curved off course, over some trees, rolling down a slope and finally settled at least 50 feet below the level of my target. It was downhill from there. Ouch!

Erin asked me if I was having fun later in the day, because I wasn’t saying much. I hesitated for a moment, and all I could say was, “This is really hard!” In my mind were images of my clubs broken over my knee and “placed” in the woods. Why was something that should be fun so frustrating? And after all I’d learned, how was I not able to just have a great time with my family? It was a terrific challenge just to stay with it and play on to the end.

The 18th hole began with the tee standing high on a hill overlooking the course. A gorgeous view, but an intimidating sight for the struggling golfer! At the end of a long fairway was a pond, then a wide, deep sand-filled bunker. Just beyond, the green and the hole were guarded by a steep hill to the parking lot.

I hit a decent first shot almost all the way to the pond. This one also went a bit right, but when the ball stopped rolling it was safe enough and still playable! Maybe I could redeem myself and at least finish with a satisfying last hole. When I walked up to the ball, I saw I was only about 150 yards from my target on the back of the green.

Max Restaurant Group Pulls Out All the Stops at “Dinner on the River” on July 21st

I

t was a beautiful, sunny day on July 21st as we headed to the spectacular Riverfront Boathouse located in Riverside Park on the Connecticut River. We were excited to attend the Max Restaurant Group’s 2nd annual Dinner on the River featuring Max Downtown Executive Chef Chris Sheehan and Max’s Oyster Bar Executive Chef Hunter Morton with wine and cocktail pairings by Max Downtown Sommelier Justin Gavry and Max’s Oyster Bar award winning mixologist Derek Vitale. It was sure to be a culinary highlight of the summer!

The evening started off fabulously with a cocktail reception featuring a locally sourced forager cocktail that was absolutely delicious blending St. George Green Chile Vodka with fresh squeezed watermelon juice, lime and club soda. A Sparkling Silver Label by Hopkins Vineyard was also served while we tasted blue point oysters, local cheeses, chowder stuffed clams, grilled oysters with aioli and watermelon and pork belly.

As we sat expectantly waiting for the first course to begin, we all noticed some ominous clouds looming overhead. We were poured a Jonathan Edwards Estate Pinot Gris and served a Stonington Fluke Crudo with buttermilk, radish and rhubarb which were delightful. The Max team informed us that the weather was not looking good and that we may have to head into the Boathouse as a brief rain shower passed by. No sooner had they ushered us all into the Boathouse, the sky unleashed a torrent of rain with thunder and lightning. Lucky for us the Max team continued to pour some amazing Connecticut wines and we got to experience the lovely Boathouse covered pavilion while we waited out the storm and watched a beautiful double rainbow appear over the river.

Then, within what seemed like minutes after it stopped raining the Max team repositioned the tables out of the muddy grass, reset them with fresh linens and tableware and continued the event as if nothing had happened. It truly showed the professionalism and expertise of the Max team and while the rain could have really put a damper on the event, instead it allowed an opportunity for the staff to really shine...and they did!

We continued the amazing night with 4 more courses and dessert, enjoying the following: Lobster Terrine with green gazpacho, watermelon and pea tendrils paired with a Jones Family Vineyards Chardonnay; Rosedale Farms Corn Flatbread with smoked potato, sweet corn and shaved Australian black truffle paired with Sunset Meadows Twisted Red; Grilled Rhode Island Calamari with paella stuffed squash blossom, Stonington royal red shrimp and chimichurri paired with Lost Acres 30

Riesling; Roasted Red Wattle Pork Loin with summer heirloom beans, smoked pulled pork and tomato gravy paired with Wölffer Estate Cab Franc; and a Brown Butter Peach Upside Down Cake with raspberry compote paired with a SOG-Peel Martini. It was all absolutely phenomenal and I will definitely be attending next year!

The Winvian Farm: Stay the Night in a Treehouse, a Greenhouse or a Sikorsky Helicopter

fter you’ve read the title of this article, you’re probably thinking I jet-setted off to Europe or some exotic location to have the opportunity to stay overnight in a treehouse or helicopter! Guess again…The Winvian Farm is right in our backyard – nestled on 113 acres of heaven on earth in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut. The living room was cozy with a double-sided wood-burning fireplace. The bathroom, a forest fantasy with heated floors, overturned tree trunks which formed the sinks, and water pouring from wall-mounted faucets. A Jacuzzi tub is sunken into the verdigris marble floor looking out to the pond and woods, and the gorgeous walk-in shower is walled with thousands of smooth river stones. You have to see the pictures to believe it.

If you love feeling like you’re literally sleeping outdoors, you would also enjoy the Beaver Lodge. Beaver Lodge is a splendid, two-story sanctuary of wood and stone on the edge of Beaver Pond.

A dome of interlocking sticks canopies the master bed, trees rise to the ceiling, and a spiral staircase winds around the tree trunk to the loft, where a table for two and a twin sleeper sofa overlook the forest below. A beautiful double-sided stone fireplace warms the relaxing space. The fabulous Beaver Lodge bathroom is a watery world of its own with radiant-heated river rock floors and a Jacuzzi that fills from the ceiling.

Wishing you had become a pilot? Then you have to stay in the fully-restored 1968 Sikorsky Sea King Pelican HH3F helicopter. This amazing Coast Guard chopper stands at the center of a unique cottage, its rotor blades embedded in the ceiling. The originals are here: pilot and co-pilot seats, switches, gauges – with modern updates such as a mod sofa and flat screen TV. Take your cocktails in the cockpit, watch a film in the fuselage, relax by a glowing woodstove, and sleep in the cloud-soft king-sized bed outside the helicopter.

When we first arrived, we were greeted by our wonderful hosts, offered champagne (because staying at the Winvain truly is a celebration), and escorted to a lounge area with a crackling fireplace.

There our host explained the amenities and reviewed our itinerary for spa appointments and dinner reservations. We were then whisked off through the forest to our resort cottage.

Need to actually get off the ground? There’s even a hideaway suspended 35 feet above the forest floor. Treehouse is a childhood fantasy turned grown-up haven. It’s like climbing into a wonderful, well-kept secret, a place of vivid colors and eclectic angles. The first floor bedroom has a king-sized bed, a gas fireplace, steam shower and Jacuzzi. The second floor lounge has a wood-burning fireplace, a queen-sized sleeper sofa, a full bar and grand, treetop views of the New England forest below.

My jaw dropped as we walked through the entrance of the Woodlands Cottage. It was as if the architect had literally created the woods in the house! The first thing I saw was two rough-cut

Unfortunately, I actually had to leave the cottage for my spa appointment at The Winvian Farm Spa, which is 5,000 square feet of relaxation. Trees and sky fill the great arching windows of the Mediation Lounge where everything shimmers with the radiance of the reflecting pool. Private yoga and fitness, massage, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy and skincare are practiced with a balance of ancient wisdom and modern expertise in beautiful state-of-the art facilities.

But let’s get to the best part…the food! The Restaurant at Winvian Farm’s Executive Chef Chris Eddy is leading a culinary revolution with his unique seed-to-table philosophy. The freshest, most natural, all organic, non-GMO ingredients are harvested daily to create exceptional seasonal menus, for a truly luxurious fine dining experience. Almost everything served in Winvian Farm’s revered restaurant is grown on the private estate in three greenhouses, and three acres of organic gardens. Honey from the apiary, a henhouse, root cellar, and luscious fruit trees round out Winvian Farm’s artfully open-ended menus. We had the pleasure of meeting Chef Eddy and discussing his philosophy of creating an “agricultural renaissance.” He explained that to grow the kind of quality food they do at the farm the focus has to be on the soil. The soil needs to be fed adequately and recuperated. Pests are continually confused with crop rotation, and they move the chickens around the farm in a buggy to protect the soil and eat the bugs. Deeply passionate about food and farming, it’s

clear to see how he creates his delectable menus with the absolute highest quality of ingredients. And they do allow you to dine there even if you’re not staying overnight, which I would highly recommend. It will be one of the top dining experiences of your life! I’m sure after you read the next paragraphs you’ll be booking a reservation.

gardens, even the patterns of the weather. Each plate was presented with pride and an epicurean expression of what is just outside the windows: field-fresh, delectable, inspired… and so spontaneous that the evening’s prix-fixe menu is finalized only hours before your meal.

Our first course was Winvian greenhouse beets, garlic mustard shoots, ruby red mustard, wilted beet greens, “beet concentrate” and grilled octopus ceviche – which was seriously the most tender octopus I’ve ever had. Next we enjoyed a butternut squash risotto with braised veal, chestnut and red wine and garganelli pasta with pear, watercress and blue cheese. Our main course was striped bass with cold grown spinach, cauliflower and grilled cabbage. Not to be missed are the dessert choices and we picked the flourless chocolate cake with caramel mousse and banana and white coffee ice cream. Everything was cooked to perfection, an explosion of taste sensations and truly mouthwatering and satisfying. Rarely can I say that everything we tried from the appetizers to the main course to the dessert was phenomenal.

The best part of all of it is the philosophy and care for the environment shown at Winvian Farm, a small, beautiful circle from seed to table, one that creates extraordinary cuisine and points toward a more prosperous, healthy future for everyone. They even offer garden education and cooking classes for guests, all to keep spreading the good word of truly remarkable seed-to-table food.

The Book that Changed My Life

I

must begin by saying I do not believe any book can change your life; only you can. Two people read the same book, one is inspired while the other is bored. It is the person and not the book that is the issue and what lies within each of us. The author’s wisdom when combined with the reader’s inspiration and desire to change can lead to a new life for the reader.

The book that has meant the most to me, in my life is “The Human Comedy” by William Saroyan. When I was struggling with many issues, particularly loss, as a physician caring for and counseling people with life threatening illnesses I came across a story

by Saroyan called “The Young Man on the Flying Trapeze.” At the end of the story the young man dies after thinking about a trapeze to God, and Saroyan’s closing words are, “He became dreamless, unalive, perfect.” From then on I sought out all his books.

I see the pain of most people’s lives and particularly their childhoods. Growing up feeling unloved with destructive messages from their parents which lead to their not caring for themselves.

Saroyan has a teacher talk to one of her students and tell him what we all need to hear to survive; to respect each other even if you do not like each other, the love of truth and honor, to not be alike but to be human in your own way and to pay no attention to those trying to hold you back and embarrass you. These are mottoes we need to hear from our parents and live by them.

Perhaps the most important words in his book for me were these, “But try to remember that a good man can never die…The person of a man may leave-or be taken away-but the best part of a good man stays. It stays forever. Love is immortal and makes all things immortal. But hate dies every minute.” Those words, plus the thought that when we leave our bodies we become perfect again have sustained me through much loss and from my experience I believe they speak the truth.

He knows what I learned, “Doctors don’t know everything…

They understand matter, not spirit.” Medical education is not a true education. It is more about information and matter and not spirit and the real world people exist in.

If every child were brought up with the words spoken in The Human Comedy the world would be a very different place. I see the pain of those who grew up being told they were failures, never good at anything and were dressed only in dark colors.

Last but not least finding pennies has always been a sign from God that I am on the right path. In the book one brother tells the other, “Pick it up, it’s good luck. Keep it always.” When I spoke to Saroyan’s daughter she said her father was like that and would run out into traffic to pick up a penny he saw. The ultimate sign for me was finding twenty six cents while I was about to run a marathon, which is twenty six miles long. It was a sure sign I was going to make it. Why? Because the penny says it all; In God We Trust; the Liberty to be the unique and authentic person we want to be and not what others impose and Abe Lincoln, staring into the east where the sun rises so he cannot see any shadows but still without a smile. Would he have lived differently if he knew what was coming in his life? So I have learned to accept my mortality and love until I am tired of my body. Then I will leave and become perfect and immortal.
