ave you ever noticed that there is a pattern that repeats itself in your relationships? Do you find yourself fighting about the same thing with a different person? Do all of your relationships end because of the same reasons? I’ve been reading a fascinating book, “The Tools,” by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels. Stutz and Michels will tell you that you’re in, “The Maze.” I’ve been there – many times! The Maze is a state that you get into in your head where you become obsessed with someone who has “wronged” you. You curse them, you argue with them, you plot your revenge.

The problem is you become so obsessed with thinking about what happened and how hurt you are, that you literally stop living your life and you can’t move forward.

I just had this happen to me a few nights ago! My boyfriend and I were driving back from the shore after a great day of wine tasting and dinner. We were on a two-lane highway following a tractor trailer. The truck started to slow down, so my boyfriend moved into the passing lane with the intent to pass the truck. As soon as he did that, the truck put on his blinker to move into the passing lane as well. Now I would have slowed down, because I would have assumed that the trucker may not see me. My boyfriend, however, speeds up to try and pass the truck. I’m screaming at him – “why are you playing chicken with a tractor trailer!!??” Now I’m mad, and spend the entire rest of the drive thinking things like, “I hate the way he drives, he’s trying to get us killed, I should just drive all the time.” IN THE MAZE… I realized that my life had stopped for an hour while I ran through all these scenarios in my head. All I was doing was hurting myself, regardless of whether or not my boyfriend had actually done anything wrong. I’m just a more conservative driver. When you’re in the Maze, you literally forget everything good about the other person – all you can think about is the wrong he or she has committed.

Why is it so hard to get out of the Maze? Because we have these expectations that the world is supposed to treat us fairly – “If I’m good, then the world will be good to me.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. You can be having the best day and someone can be rude to you, cut you off on the highway or something even more terrible can happen. The authors suggest that the only way out of the Maze is when you feel something bigger and more powerful than fairness…unconditional love. They call it “Outflow” – an infinite, spiritual force that gives of itself without restraint. Here’s how to tap into it.

Focus on the person who triggered your anger. Visualize their presence.

Send all the love in your chest directly to them; hold nothing back. Follow the love as it leaves your chest and feel it enter the other person at their solar plexus. This will give you the sense that you’re completely at one with them.

Now relax and feel yourself again surrounded by infinite love, which will return to you all the energy you gave away. Once you are in this state, you are the chief beneficiary, you become unstoppable, and you start living your life again!

had the pleasure of sitting down with Danielle Pelkowski, manager of Spa Soli in West Hartford, to discuss the many benefits of Himalayan salt therapy.

DH: What is salt cave therapy?

DP: Salt cave therapy is our most popular service. In a study conducted at Washington University School of Medicine, the researchers stated, “Despite recent calls to intensify the search for new risk factors for breast cancer, acting on information that we already have could prevent thousands of cases each year.“ The majority of these studies revolve around diet, stress, environmental toxin exposure, synthetic hormones and sedentary lifestyle.

One of the tools for early risk detection that has been underrated and misunderstood is the valuable technology of Medical Infrared Thermography (MIT). MIT is a high tech specialized detector with tens of thousands of highly sensitive energy sensors. Your body emits a constant source of infrared signatures as long as you are alive. Those signatures can be detected by a state of the art Medical Infrared camera to be interpreted by trained professionals into a report of potential risks of breast cancer. It is not diagnostic nor is it a replacement for a mammogram, but it does give clues that starting a prevention program should happen sooner than later. In fact, more than 5 studies indicate that an abnormal thermography scan is 10 times more significant as a future risk than family history.

But beware, not all of the thermography screening centers in this industry have up to date technology nor accurately read and interpret images. There are specific guidelines that every thermography clinic has to follow for you to receive a proper evaluation.

Additionally, because thermography is not diagnosing cancer, most abnormal thermography reports lead to holistic interventions that reduce risk. So find a center that has doctors familiar with the technology and treatment.

Why We All Need to Apply Self-Care

W

hen I work with clients, I highly recommend that they take time for “self-care.” I may meet with a client who said they didn’t do any of my homework and actually the day they thought they would do it, they rested instead. There is this sense of guilt in admitting it to me. My response is, “Great! I’m glad you listened to your body.”

We are so conditioned to keep doing and never allow ourselves time to recoup, rejuvenate and replenish our souls and bodies. Society makes us think that being busy is a preferred state of being and having downtime is nonproductive boredom. From there you can access higher harmonic frequencies and pull them down to anchor here on the earth plane, and bring your personal heaven into merger with your earthly being.

This configuration signifies the merger of heaven and earth; the best of the human expression integrated with divinity for the next phase of authentic, God-realized human evolution, an experiment in divinely inspired free will.

Manifesting your heaven on earth requires anchoring higher electro-tonal frequencies (or Flames) to the earth plane. 4 Financial Strategies for Changing Careers

ere in Connecticut, October is known for its transitions.

As temperatures dip and the air becomes crisp, leaves on trees change colors from vibrant green to deep gold, brilliant orange, and fiery red. Like October weather in Connecticut, many professionals’ approach to their careers and expectations of their finances are changing. The notion that you go to school, work in one job, and retire at age 65 to enjoy a few years of blissful existence without financial concerns does not represent reality for many people today.

Many people now live until their late 80s. Most people want to enjoy a quality of life physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially, on their terms. Pensions that pay retirees comfortable incomes that adjust with inflation are few and far between, and Social Security is designed to pay for only about 40% of “average earnings.” As more people realize this, they are reconsidering their own expectations for work, retirement, and how they spend their time and money.

I am one of those people. For years as I worked in different jobs, I fantasized about becoming a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®). I wanted to be a fiduciary financial advisor who provided clients a safe space to talk about life’s uncertainties and manage clients’ investments as they realized their life goals according to financial plans that I developed with them. However, time and careful planning were necessary for me to make the professional move.

My husband shared my entrepreneurial spirit. Early on in our marriage we agreed to live within our means, build up emergency savings, and invest small amounts of money regularly. We wanted our money to grow so we could have choices and flexibility over time.

As we built up our finances, I researched training programs for becoming a CFP®. 2. Do Your Due Diligence. Understand the financial risks and tradeoffs associated with your transition, beyond how big your paycheck will be. For instance, if you want to retire before Medicare is available to you, and you depend on your current employer for health insurance, understand how much you will need to pay for health insurance out of pocket.

3. Create a Financial Plan. In my experience, the hardest part of changing jobs, reinventing your career, or planning for retirement, is managing uncertainty.

A financial plan provides structure, prioritization, and a path for dealing with the unknown. At a minimum, it should include a budget, emergency savings, regular reviews of what you own and what you owe throughout your transition, and contingency plans that you commit to and follow, should your finances and/or lifestyle derail during your professional change.

4. Engage People to Help You. I could not have initiated my own professional transition had it not been for my supportive family and the insights that other professionals provided me. Are Your Children Safe from Toxins?

I

n recent years, a number of studies describing an association between environmental toxins and adult heart disease, asthma, cancer, and other health conditions have made their way into the mainstream media. But how do toxins affect children? A study from the University of Alberta in Canada evaluated the effects of pollutants on children with congenital heart disease. Their study involved reviewing data from several metropolitan and rural areas between 2006 and 2011. The results of their research established an association between several toxins in air pollution and heart defects in children. Some of the pollutants studied included carbon monoxide, benzene, sulfur dioxide, toluene, and carbon disulfide, which are often associated with car exhaust and industrial manufacturing plants.

While engaging in my own research, I came across a scientific review article published in The Lancet entitled, “Neurobehavioral Effects of Developmental Toxicity.”

This article cited several studies that point to links between toxins and other childhood disorders, such as reduced mathematics achievement scores, increased ADHD, increased antisocial behavior, and lower overall IQ scores. More recently, another scientific review article, “Thyroiddisrupting Chemicals and Brain Development: An Update,” published in Endocrine Connections in 2018 describes a link between pregnant women exposed to certain chemicals and neurological development during fetal growth. This study involved an analysis of several endocrine-disrupting substances including perchlorates, and phenols like BPA and triclosan. BPA can be found in some plastics, whereas triclosan, an antimicrobial agent, can be found in some toothpastes, trash bags, cutting boards, and cosmetics. Recently, the FDA has banned the use of triclosan in some products, but not all. Therefore, if a product is advertised as being antibacterial, antifungal, or antimicrobial, it might be wise to read the ingredients to make sure triclosan is not listed.

Many additional studies over the past 20 years have determined that a variety of toxins can affect children’s health and cognitive development, both pre- and postnatally. As a naturopathic physician, when I hear a patient describe a “toxin” in their environment, my initial thought is to have that patient remove the toxin, and then have her/him undergo a liver cleanse to help support their body’s natural detoxification pathways. However, liver cleanses are NOT recommended for children or pregnant women, nor are they recommended for people taking certain medications.

How Do We Protect and Treat Our Children from Toxins?

There are several ways you can reduce toxin exposure in your home, and here’s why you should undertake this task. Here are a few tips for reducing your toxic load: 1. Eat organic foods as much as possible.

The Gift of Self-Care

hen it comes to healing and selfcare the most effective approach would be prevention; maintaining a proper balance of our physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual state.

Once past the point of prevention we may have to take more extreme measures of care. Anytime we are dealing with healing and self-care for humans we must consider bio-individuality and uniqueness of environment and circumstance before deciding a plan of action.

Pain is never comfortable however it is an intelligent form of communication from the body that tells us something is off balance and needs attention. Too often people may run to a said professional to get rid of it without ever trying to understand its source. Of course, the goal is to get out of pain and back to balance, but pain responses can feel the same even while stemming from different reasons which require different approaches. For example, bodily pain can come from under use, over use, improper use or injury.

We are living vessels functioning through organized systems and need proper fuel, maintenance, and cleaning; and failure to do so can lead to pain, dysfunction and chaos. Preventing these imbalances is fairly easy once one understands anatomy and physiology and as humans in a body, this is the most relevant science while here on earth. However, if we decide that it’s not important enough to dive so deep into the study of the human organism and its psychology, we can still apply self-care at a

basic level. Eat a balanced healthy diet that makes you feel good mentally, physically and emotionally.

Let’s talk about some general approaches for particular conditions.

For example, the source of pain coming from underuse will obviously be very different then pain coming from overuse.

If a muscle, bone or joint becomes weak from underuse then the recommendation would be to simply use it, however an underused weakness is going to require proper care and patience while being put to use with exercise.

Overuse needs rest and rehabilitation and sometimes stopping it completely may sound good but lead to another trap. The most common is improper use. While we can attempt to use the handle end of a screwdriver to hammer something in and

get away with it, it will never be as effective as an actual hammer.

How do we bring care to these areas by applying the proper tools at the proper time to the proper place? To prevent being tired from overuse we should do our best not to overwork and under sleep.

To prevent being fatigued from underuse we should get good quality movement and keep the blood and lymph moving through our system. To prevent improper use, we should observe the functions of our anatomy and work carefully through trial and error. To remedy these conditions once beyond prevention; self-massage, stretching, herbal teas and poultices can be very effective.

Let’s jump a moment to emotional pain. Acknowledgment can help, yet if we dwell in the negative thoughts that drain

ervical cancer is the 3rd most common gynecologic cancer and the 8th most common cancer among women in the US. Mean age at diagnosis is 50, but the cancer can occur as early as age 20. The American Cancer Society estimates that in the US, 13,170 new cases of invasive cervical cancer and 4,250 deaths from cervical cancer will occur in 2019, of those new cases 120 are estimated to occur in Connecticut based on past data. Cervical cancer results from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which appears to be caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is among the most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). HPV is transmitted from lesions during skin-to-skin contact.

Risk Factors and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer Risk factors for cervical cancer and dysplasia include: younger age at first intercourse, a high lifetime number of sexual partners, cigarette smoking and immunodeficiency, poor diet, long term oral contraceptive use, chronic cervicitis, environmental carcinogens.

Regardless of sexual history, one should assume that exposure has occurred with HPV as it is everywhere or ubiquitous. Current recommendations for a Papanicolaou test or Pap smear include all women regardless of history to start screening at age 21 and continue every 3 years until the age of 30. Once 30, every 5 years with HPV testing or co-testing until age 65 or continue every 3 years with solely the PAP smear.

Cervical neoplasia is asymptomatic; the first symptom of early cervical cancer is usually irregular, often vaginal bleeding after sex. Diagnosis is by a cervical Pap smear and biopsy and staging is clinical. Within the typical medical setting, treatment may involve surgical resection for early-stage disease or radiation therapy plus chemotherapy for locally advanced disease. If the cancer has widely metastasized, chemotherapy is often used alone.

Vaccinations for HPV The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three vaccines that prevent infection with disease-causing HPV types: Gardasil®, Gardasil® 9, and Cervarix®. All three vaccines prevent infection with HPV types 16 and 18, two high-risk HPVs that cause about 70% of cervical cancers and an even higher percentage of some of the other HPVcaused cancers. Gardasil® also prevents infection with HPV types 6 and 11 which cause 90% of genital warts. Gardasil® 9 prevents infection with the same four HPV types plus five additional cancer-causing types (31, 33, 45, 52 and 58). As of May 2017, Gardasil® 9 is the only HPV vaccine available for use in the United States.

Cervarix and Gardasil are utilized in other countries. As of June 14, 2019 (current reporting) in VAERS of the search “VAERS ID, VACCINE: GARDASIL 9 ADVERSE REACTIONS” there are 681,485 rows of

information when a max is 10,000. With a more specific search there were still too many adverse reactions to list.

If you are considering for your child(ren) (as it is given to both males and females) or yourself, I suggest doing your full research and making an informed decision, looking into your family history of HPV, cancers and risk assessment, include in your search VAERS, know the pamphlets and current recommendations to not vaccinate, autoimmunity associated with vaccines and vaccine ingredients. If you choose to get the vaccine, talk with a naturopath to make sure your body is adequately prepared for the injection to offset any possible reactions and to help your body acclimate, and provide a proper immune response. If you choose to not vaccine, I recommend you also seek a naturopath to see what you can do to improve your lifestyle and diet to limit risks.

Most HPV infections are cleared from the body within 1-2 years. If you have HPV or your sexual partner(s) do, all parties may need to be assessed to determine if treatment is necessary. If you have cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer or had abnormal Paps do not wait to seek treatment, you must take action.

Natural Treatments for HPV Infection 1. Escharotics: weekly sessions (sessions vary depending on both clinical observations, and laboratory diagnostics). This is performed by a clinician directly to the cervix.

Menstruation, the Moon, and Empowerment through Choice

very 21-to 35 days women bleed for 2-7 days in order to biologically bear children in a grand sacrifice of their body to perpetuate the human race.

What does our period (aka menses) mean to us? How do we prepare for and manage this integral part of our nature? What influences “it’- does the moon? other women? How do we deal with and treat menstrual diseases? These are questions that can not be answered in one article, however, they are worth a lively discussion that is long overdue to reclaim the “cur-sed” parts of ourselves that happen to make us uniquely female.

What is Menstruation?

The word menstruation, comes from the word “menses” which comes from Latin and Greek words meaning month (mensis) and moon (mene). Is it a coincidence that the moon cycles through the night sky in a similar time frame to our own hormonal cycles? Historically and culturally, due to books such as “The Red Tent,”

by Anita Diamant, many women realize that we used to gather monthly, usually at the full moon (or new moon) and talk, do each other’s hair, and be in the unencumbered company of other women. Knight in his thesis on Menstruation and the Origins of Culture sees the history and mythology

that shrouded this “moon time” gathering as a ritual time that women created to be free of the responsibility of male sexual advances and influenced the periodicity of hunting expeditions and organized society.

Over time, the lore, customs, and taboos associated with menstruation took on more sinister hues, such as, being “unclean”, ruining food if you touched it, dangerous, and even deadly.

How do we claim this messy part of ourselves and manage it in ways that lead to a greater connection with nature, our biological sisters, greater community, and improve our health and wellness in the process? Let’s start by addressing some myths and facts.

there is little scientific evidence to support this theory. Using data from the app Clue, researchers did not find a correlation between women synching up their menses with other women using information from 1500 women.

Is Melatonin Our Mediator with the Moon?

Dr. Sari Cohen, ND hypothesized that our menstrual connection to the cycles of the moon may be influenced physiologically by the effect of melatonin, a hormone that is tied to circadian sleep cycles and is released in the dark. The evidence she provides for this assertion includes that the pineal gland, a hormone regulating structure in your brain that is part of the neuroendocrine system, is sensitive to light and influences menstrual hormones as well as melatonin. Melatonin levels tend to be higher during menstruation and lower during ovulation with other reproductive affects.

If melatonin is a mediator of menstruation through its effects on the pineal gland and our exposure to light influences this rhythm, it is clear that this system has many disruptors in our modern times.

Artificial Lighting, enhanced by “screentime”, Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs), night-shift work, exogenous hormones, endocrine disrupting plastics, pesticides, medication, and birth control pills we are exposed to in our daily lives and environment may play a role in the disruption in our natural rhythms and connection with the moon and our nature rhythms, as well as, increase our risk of chronic diseases and the rising rates of infertility.

Effective Integrative Medical Treatments for Menstrual Disorders Integrative medical treatments for which there is evidence for effectiveness in treating menstrual disorders with minimal to no side effects includes: nutritional supplements prescribed by a naturopathic doctor or functional medicine practitioner, energy medicine, yoga, meditation, energy psychology, exercise, body therapies (chiropractic care, manual therapy, craniosacral therapy, etc.). The benefit of using these integrative therapies instead of the birth control pill as first line medical therapy for the treatment of menstrual disorders is that it poses no risk and can result in benefits beyond the treatment of the menstrual disorder, such as, improved sleep, digestive function, immunity, psychological and physical well-being. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, our menses are an important sign and symptom of how our general health is and its treatment, rather than being suppressive, is supportive along with the whole system to bring the mind, body, and spirit back into balance.

Have We Lost Touch with Each Other and the Influence of the Moon?

“It is argued that at times marked out by the moon’s phases, women used ritual means to bring their emotional energies into harmony, this cultural intervention in turn assisting in the realization of women’s physiologically-given potentialities for synchrony,” states Knight. Knight asserts that the synchronization of menstrual cycles and secluded moon time served less as a scientific fact than a cultural

way to organize society that left women time to gather. “If we could discern something universal within ritual and mythology which pointed unmistakably to menstrual synchrony as its source, then matters might be different”. It is up to us, as individuals, and as a collective group to choose to reimagine, and rebrand our moon time and how we treat it. Regardless of the paucity of data to suggest we synchronize our cycles with the moon and with each other, there is great potential benefit in ritualizing and celebrating our light and dark cycles and to gather, empower, and support each other in a holistic way through our joy and suffering and maybe even howl at the moon once in a while.

Unmasking The Real You

I

mposter Syndrome: It’s a problem that affects people from all walks of life, in all types of organizations. It’s often most associated with people who are viewed as extremely successful. Mike Myers of Saturday Night Live fame shared, “I still believe that at any time the no-talent police will come and arrest me.”

From Winston Churchill, to Serena Williams, to Michelle Obama, to Lady Gaga, individuals feel plagued by feelings of selfdoubt and disconnect from their accomplishments. To outsiders, these individuals appear self-assured and confident, but beneath the calm surface lies an ugly reality: a person who believes that everything is a lie, and that they are a fraud.

First defined in 1978 by Doctors Paulina Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes, the Imposter Syndrome was “unmasked” in a study of 150 very successful women. In this study, each woman believed her success was nothing more than being in the right place at the right time. These women were unable to enjoy the fruits of their labors, and so they merely continued to do their work while fearing the possibility of being unmasked. Now, from personal coaches to medical school personnel, the Imposter Syndrome that was once a dirty little secret has become better understood. Recent researchers estimate that as much as 80 percent of the population will deal with this feeling of being an imposter at least once in their life. Some will find it a permanent part of their responses.

People encounter Imposter Syndrome when they experience success, or embark in a new direction without any previous experience — entering into a graduate program, for example. selves face-to-face with questions about whether they can do the work. Imposter Syndrome makes them feel incapable and lacking critical skills. It can paralyze even the best students or employees and keep individuals reaching their full potential.

Does Imposter Syndrome Hold You Back?

Can Food Allergies Increase with Age?

he most common food allergies in the population are peanuts, dairy, eggs, soy, shellfish and wheat. Food allergies typically begin in childhood, however food sensitivities often can occur over time as we age. Adults commonly have food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts, fish and shellfish in addition to fruit and vegetable pollen. Most common symptoms for food allergies include: hives; eczema; swelling of lips, face or tongue; difficulty breathing; abdominal pain; or dizziness. Food sensitivity symptoms are more delayed and common symptoms include migraines, stomach upset and bloating, headaches, runny nose, IBS and fatigue.

Food sensitivities can develop over time particularly if GI function is compromised.

There are some genetic risk factors and items like canned foods that have shown to negatively increase chance of allergens.

Lifestyle, nutrition and environmental factors as well as specific enzyme deficiencies are contributory factors. The immune system and gastrointestinal health are key areas to review since it increases the chances of overall food sensitivity. The gut microbiome can also be weak due to medications, additives, processed chemicals and antibiotic use affecting the ratio of good versus bad bacteria which increases the likelihood of food sensitivities.

I frequently treat families in our office, particularly children. I find the most critical time to address this is in childhood before food sensitivities increase; often times parents may think their child will just grow out of it, however, why wait when there are so many effective natural approaches that can ameliorate the symptoms.

Exposure It still isn’t clear as to why food allergies and sensitivities have been on the rise.

Some research indicates that earlier exposure to common food allergens (younger than 2-3 years of age) helps to prevent food allergy. Similar research has been conducted to early exposure to animal dander, preventing likelihood of allergy as an adult.

There have been a lot of studies related to the US being too hygienic to decrease spread of infection. Studies have demonstrated that exposure to dirt, allergens, bacteria, and viruses regularly builds your immune tolerance. For example, a study showed that children who were raised in homes that used dishwashers more frequently had higher rates of food allergies.

Digestive Support It is important to consider stomach acid production both if there is too much stomach acid or too little. Lower levels of hydrochloric acid (HCL) prevents food from

being broken down as well. Sometimes support with betaine HCL helps to support acid levels. Additionally, digestive enzymes help to support the body’s ability to effectively break down foods and obtain the necessary nutrients.

Histamine It may be helpful to look at histamine levels, particularly if both food and environmental allergies are present. Histamine crosses the blood brain barrier and is a component of stomach acid helping to break down food. Foods that are rich in histamine may aggravate health including runny nose, headaches, dizziness, and abdominal cramping. You should look to avoid foods that trigger, possibly foods higher in histamine, and also consider a diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme supplement to decrease histamine levels related to food.

Immune Support Individuals with food allergies may have lower immune function. Supplements like Vitamin C with bioflavonoids that not only support the immune function but have anti-histamine properties are helpful to reduce symptoms. Much of the immune function is located in the intestine, particularly under the age of 5 years old, and a good quality probiotic is also recommended. I also consider supplements

such as quercetin, which is a natural antihistamine, a high dose fish oil and turmeric which both decreases inflammation and supports immune function.

quality, infections, chemicals, pollution, alcohol, and heavy metals, not to mention chemotherapy. The body has an increased demand for vitamins and minerals so it can detoxify these pollutants and regenerate healthy cells. Mega doses of nutrients can be given safely through IV therapy and the body can be rapidly repleted. This helps the body deal with stress, detoxification, immune function, cellular functions, life extension, and regeneration. All of this becomes even more depleted when going through the stress of cancer; the physical treatment, the emotional, mental, social, and financial burden of cancer that can further stress the body.

IV Vitamin C IV Vitamin C, or ascorbate, therapy is probably one of the more well-known therapies for cancer patients. It all can be considered “high dose” as standard oral therapy is usually around 1000 mg or 1 gram by mouth. However, IV Vitamin C can be given at low doses of 5 grams up to 20 grams, or higher doses of 20 grams and up, usually maxing out somewhere around 125 grams depending on the practitioner.

The IV route of Vitamin C is the only way to achieve plasma concentrations high enough that have shown clinical benefit for cancer patients. Vitamin C has been shown to have downstream effects on repairing DNA damage, mitochondrial damage, and stimulate apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Additionally, Vitamin C has a positive effect on inflammation markers which can fuel abnormal cell di-

vision. Cancer patients have been shown to have lower concentrations of plasma ascorbate levels upon diagnosis. While IV Vitamin C is not contraindicated in any cancers, it has more research showing its effectiveness in certain types of cancers, like ovarian and pancreatic cancers. Additionally, Vitamin C can be synergistic with certain chemotherapeutic agents, which would increase their efficacy. While IV Vitamin C therapy is not curative for cancer, it has been shown in multiple studies to improve quality of life measures, such as fatigue, pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Poly-MVA/Lipoic Acid Another IV therapy is Poly-MVA, or lipoic acid mineral complex (LAMC). It contains complex molecules that can enter a cell and work on the mitochondria to create energy. Like Vitamin C therapy, this therapy has multiple benefits. It has been shown to be protective for the neurologic and cardiac system, which some classes of chemotherapies can cause adverse effects in these systems. It has anticancer benefits as it helps create energy in healthy cells and does not feed cancerous cells. It also promotes DNA repair and protects cells against toxins, which makes it great to use after chemotherapy and radiation. Again, this IV therapy helps improve quality of life measures. Because it helps produce energy in the cells, it helps with fatigue levels and overall well-being. It is a great addition after standard treatments because it can benefit pain and neuropathy.

Glutathione Glutathione is an effective treatment following chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Glutathione is the body’s most powerful antioxidant and has an affinity for the neurological system. Since chemotherapy and radiation can cause lots of oxidative stress, glutathione is easily depleted after these types of treatments. It can help repair and regenerate cells and tissues in the body, specifically if neuropathies are present. Since standard treatments can also deplete many other nutrients, it is best to give glutathione with a nutrient IV. Many nutrients are necessary cofactors to help the body recycle glutathione, which makes it more effective.

Myers Cocktail It is known that cancer and its treatment can cause malnourishment due to increased need for nutrients and a

decreased intake due to loss of appetite.

Having proper nutrients will help with quality of life measures such as energy, pain levels, mental functioning, and decreasing side effects of any standard treatment. These formulas are also rehydrating as well. Nutrient IV formulas can vary widely depending on the practitioner.

Many nutrient IVs are labeled as a “Myers cocktail”. This was pioneered by Dr. John Myers, MD. He used a standard mixture of nutrients to help a variety of complaints successfully. Nutrient IVs can include any and all the following nutrients: B complex including B12, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, trace minerals, Selenium, and amino acids. These can be administered at any time of a cancer diagnosis: before treatment to build a strong foundation, in between rounds of chemotherapy to minimize side effects and strengthen the body, or after treatment for repletion.

Standard treatment for cancer is hard on the body, not only physically but mentally draining as well. Many of the therapies offered by oncologists address the pathology but do not address the whole person and many of the side effects that come with these treatments. IV nutrient therapy can support a person safely through their cancer journey. While none of these therapies are a replacement for standard treatment or curative, there are many studies demonstrating the efficacy of these treatments in supporting the body.

Integrative Oncology: Combining Traditional and Natural Treatment for Cancer

hoosing the best natural therapies to combine safely with conventional treatments can be difficult and is vitally important to get right. Studies estimate that over 80% of people with cancer are using natural and supportive therapies along with their conventional treatments. Integrative oncology allows patients to combine traditional cancer treatments and natural therapies during various stages of treatment. Integrative oncology utilizes lifestyle medicine, evidence based supplements, botanical, and nutritional support to reduce side effects associated with treatment and to optimize response to conventional care. Generally, naturopathic doctors who specialize in integrative oncology believe it’s vital to support the whole person and nourish the whole body while the cancer is being treated or after the cancer has been removed.

alcohol, tobacco and yohimbe. Herbs nonetheless are an essential component of integrative oncology care, and properly selected herbs can be helpful for nausea, fatigue, vomiting, mucositis and peripheral neuropathy.

Introduction to Integrative Oncology

An initial visit with a licensed naturopathic physician who specializes in integrative cancer care is typically an hour to an hour and a half. The physician should be a graduate of a 4-year, accredited naturopathic medical school and a licensed provider.

During the visit, the patient’s history, including a detailed oncologic and overall health history are discussed. The cancer diagnosis, stage, and treatment plan are reviewed, and importantly, the patient’s health goals are clarified. In addition to assessing the patient’s past medical history, the naturopath and patient will review important determinants of health including sleep, exercise, diet and exposures.

Natural medicine can support patients in various stages of treatment including before and after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. In addition, patients in survivorship following successful cancer treatment can be supported with natural medicine and techniques. Each of these areas requires a specialized approach as the appropriate herb or supplement will vary. Supplements that may not be safe to utilize during chemotherapy may be beneficial once that part of the journey is complete. Ideally, to ensure optimal outcomes, integrative cancer care should be based on evidence and experience. Misleading assertions abound with numerous claims on the internet that a particular substance, diet or approach can cure cancer, and it is essential for patients to discern the healthy, helpful and healing interventions from those that harm.

Surgery: Preparation prior to surgery is essential. Modern protocols, referred to as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, recognize the importance of proper nutrition, hydration, and activity prior to surgery. Before surgery, it is safest to stop all supplements. After surgery, specific supplements and herbs can help with healing. Zinc and Vitamin C can promote wound healing and are commonly employed.

Chemotherapy: During chemotherapy, some herbs and supplements are safe while others can alter important enzymes in the liver that metabolize chemotherapy and other substances. It is therefore important to avoid treatments that alter this CYP450 system and interfere with chemotherapy. Examples to avoid during chemotherapy include St. John’s Wort, grapefruit, rosemary, 28

Survivorship: Naturopathic medicine lends itself very well to survivorship. It is important to remember that once a patient is in remission, the lingering effects of the cancer or therapy should be addressed. Patients often feel depleted and some seek detoxification while others need to focus on balancing hormones especially in the case of hormonal cancers (breast and prostate). Supplements, herbs and homeopathy can help with chronic fatigue, constipation, inflammation, diarrhea, anxiety, and depression.

An individualized, holistic plan is developed including nutritional advice as well as recommendations for natural therapies, exercise, herbs and supplements. These plans will change along with the patient’s disease state. As one part of treatment concludes, treatment plans will change accordingly to support and nourish the body during the next stage of treatment. One of the core naturopathic principles is the importance of the doctor’s role as teacher, emphasizing the importance of educating and empowering patients to take control of their health. Counseling and education form a critical part of the visit.

Diets for Cancer Patients Based on evidence and experience, one of the essential tasks for the integrative oncology provider is to help differentiate fads from helpful advances. This is particularly important in the area of nutrition, where new diets are frequently touted for their possible anti-cancer benefits. Determining the right nutrition plan can be a common challenge.

Recent diets popular with oncology patients include ketogenic, Mediterranean, raw, vegetarian, and alkalinizing. Patients also use fasting and juicing. During cancer therapy, weight loss is common. To combat this, patients may be told to increase calories and de-emphasize the quality of the calories they consume. While cachexia, weakness and weight loss are concerns for some patients, some research suggests that caloric restriction and intermittent fasting can be beneficial. Sorting this out with an experienced provider is essential.

1. Intermittent Fasting: A nutrient rich diet can make a substantial difference in our health especially with regards to cancer. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and have cancer protective properties. Some research suggests that intermittent fasting can be beneficial for cancer patients, may prevent or stop the progression of cancer, and improve chemotherapy and radiation outcomes. Fasting is an especially challenging recommendation during chemotherapy, during which patients may be told to consume high calorie meals and snacks. However, research suggests that intermittent fasting may be a better route.

Intermittent fasting lowers insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) which affects cancer cell proliferation, meaning growth.

Healthy cells may thrive from periods of intermittent fasting, but this is not true for cancer cells, which may be left more vulnerable to oncology treatment. When attempting intermittent fasting, research suggests that fasting 13-16 hours between meals has the highest benefit. If one consumes dinner at 7:00 PM, then breakfast and any other food would not be consumed until after 8:00 AM the next morning.

For individuals considering a change in their nutrition and diet regime, the supervision of a qualified professional is advised as caloric restriction and intermittent fasting may not be appropriate for all individuals. Intermittent fasting and caloric restriction would not be recommended for those experiencing cachexia, inability to gain weight, or malnutrition.

2. Ketogenic Diet: The Ketogenic Diet (Keto) originated in the 1920’s as a way to treat epilepsy (seizures) in children. Over the years, it has been proven helpful in weight loss, inflammation, and type 2 diabetes. In the 1950’s, a physician used the Keto Diet for several of his patients with brain cancer with some success. Today, the Keto Diet is being studied for its ability to slow the growth of tumors. The Keto Diet is a high-fat, low protein and low carbohydrate (no sugar) diet. This diet is often confused with the Atkins and Paleo Diet which are both low carbohydrate diets, but they focus more on protein intake whereas the Keto Diet concentrates on high fat. A high fat diet means consuming foods like coconut oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds while avoiding sugar, bread, pasta, and rice.

The goal of the Keto Diet is to help the body reach a state of ketosis, meaning the body begins to utilize fat as a source of energy instead of glucose, the sugar that it typically uses. Cells

rely on glucose to produce ATP or energy. On a high fat diet, ketones become the source of fuel for healthy cells. It is theorized that cancer cells are not able to efficiently use ketones and may undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the absence of glucose.

Maintaining a state of ketosis can be challenging for some patients as it requires avoiding all carbohydrates and sugar. The Keto Diet has been shown to cause nutritional deficiencies, bone loss, and high cholesterol in some individuals.

While the Keto Diet shows great promise, it is not proven to be a cure to cancer by itself and should not be recommended for every patient. As with any major nutrition change, it is best to see a naturopathic physician or nutritionist.

3. Krill Oil or Fish Oil: Krill Oil is made from krill, small crustaceans, which are a source of food for larger mammals in the ocean. In the last few years, krill oil has been marketed as being superior to fish oil.

While both fish oil and krill oil contain EPA and DHA, krill is said to be stronger. Krill oil also contains a natural source of Astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. Additionally, consumers find that the small capsule of krill oil is easier to swallow.

On the other hand, the scientists are concerned with the over-harvesting of krill and the negative impact on large mammals of the ocean. Also, many feel there is not enough research to support taking krill oil over fish oil. Astaxanthin, the antioxidant krill oil provides, is a supplement that can easily be taken separately if that is of importance.

Opinions abound and the debate over which supplements are strongest, is a common topic that patients ask me about on a regular basis. Typically, the answer to the question of “which supplement is best,” varies depending on the individual, cancer type, treatment protocol, and health goals of the patient.

4. Anti-inflammatory Diets: Inflammation has long been known to play a role in cancer development. In the late 1800’s, a well-known doctor hypothesized that the origin of cancer was at

sites of chronic inflammation which he felt enhanced cell proliferation or growth.

Today, research has proven that chronic inflammation can damage DNA, produce cytokines that stimulate blood vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to tumors, and also generate free radicals which further damages DNA. Inflammation can be caused by an infection, such as H. pylori, which is linked to stomach cancer. It can also be caused by chronic inflammatory disease such as pancreatitis or Crohn’s which can lead to pancreatic cancer and colon cancer, respectively. Stress, diet and environmental factors all influence the inflammatory response.

Inflammation can be diminished by exercise, stress reduction and dietary changes. Anti-inflammatory diets, which include antioxidants and supplements like curcumin, CoQ10 and EGCG, decrease inflammatory markers. Avoiding exposures that lead to inflammation, such as xenoestrogen and environmental carcinogens, may lower the risk of developing cancer.

Integrative medicine offers supportive therapies to complement traditional cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and survivorship. Nourishing and strengthening the whole body during and after chemotherapy and radiation allows for best possible outcomes. The naturopathic office visit should be a comprehensive and educational visit. It is important to remember that there is rarely a “magic bullet” when it comes to curing cancer, but a comprehensive approach to health, well-being and support are essential to optimizing outcomes and restoring health.

Thriving as an Empath: The Art of Self-Care for Sensitive People

elf-care is essential for all empathic people. When you mindfully and lovingly practice it each day, your sensitivities will flourish. The self-care practices, perspectives, and meditations I present as daily offerings in "Thriving as an Empath" will support you in being a compassionate, empowered empath without shouldering the suffering of others or trying to “fix” them.

All people deserve the dignity of their own paths. Day-by-day, I’ll offer gentle reminders about how you can be loving without becoming codependent or a martyr.

As a psychiatrist and empath, I am fierce about my own self-care practices and teach these principles to my patients.

I feel so strongly about them because I want to keep enjoying the extraordinary gifts of sensitivity, including an open heart, intuition, and an intimate connection with spirituality and the natural world.

Shallow emotional waters don’t appeal to me. I love going deep and my sensitivities take me there.

Still, a big challenge for all sensitive people is how to be compassionate without absorbing the stress of others and the world. We don’t have the same filters as most people. We are emotional sponges who feel everything and instinctively take it in. This differs from “ordinary” empathy, where your heart goes out to others in pain or happiness, but you don’t take on their feelings.

We empaths are helpers, lovers and caretakers who often give too much at the expense of our own well-being. Research suggests that our mirror neuron system (a part of the brain responsible for compassion) is hyper-active, which can burn us out. This is not how I choose to live. I want to be loving, but over-helping or absorbing someone’s distress just puts me on sensory overload which is painful to my sensitive body and soul. It also doesn’t serve the other person in any lasting way. To stay healthy and happy, you must be prepared with effective self-care practices so that you’re ready to deal with stress. Throughout the book, you’ll learn to keep yourself balanced and whole by trusting your intuition, setting boundaries, and protecting your energy.

The secret to an empath’s well-being is to break the momentum of sensory overload before it consumes you. The strategies and attitudes that I’ll share, which have been life-saving for me, will quickly bring you back to center when you are overwhelmed or emotionally triggered. Here are two selections from the book I hope you enjoy.

The Gift of Being Different Like many empaths, you may feel as if you don’t belong in this world. You experience life so intensely, and love so deeply, it’s sometimes hard to find kindred souls to whom you can relate. As a child, I always felt “different” from my peers. Other kids loved going to crowded parties and shopping malls whereas I preferred climbing trees with my best friend or writing poetry. As an only child, I was alone a lot and found companions in the moon and the stars. Often, I felt like an alien on Earth, waiting for a spaceship to take me to my true home. Similarly, Albert Einstein said, “I am truly a 'lone traveler' and have never belonged. I have never lost…a need for solitude.”

As I’ve grown as an empath, I can appreciate the gift of being different. I am moved by this anonymous quote: “If you feel you don’t fit into this world, it’s because you’re here to create a better one.” Sensitive people are meant to bring light into the world.

Empathy is a strength, not a weakness. I applaud everyone who looks different, feels different, or thinks different. The world needs the difference you will make.

Set your intention. I will honor the gift of being “different.” I will fully be my unique self and not let anyone take my power away. I will shine my light brightly.

It’s Not My Job to Take on the World’s Pain As an empath, you have an open heart. You don’t have the same emotional guard up that many others do. You feel people’s pain, both loved ones and strangers, and you instinctively want to take it away from them. In fact, many of us have been taught that being compassionate means it’s our job to remove other people’s pain. This is not true.

You can hold a supportive space for someone without absorbing their distress in your own body. Finding this balance is the art of healing. Inwardly you can say, “This is not my burden to carry.” It is impossible to fix someone and it is really none of your business to try. More than twenty years of being a physician has taught me that everybody deserves the dignity of their own path.

full, glossy head of hair; clear, unwrinkled skin; and long, strong nails, not only have aesthetic and social value, but also indicate general good health. They reflect the extent to which the natural aging process is causing the decline in the production of the structural proteins keratin and collagen, and the resulting deterioration of the body’s connective tissues, bones, vital organs, and even blood vessel walls. Unhealthy hair, skin, and nails (HSN) are thus often symptoms of various underlying chronic conditions. While a complete discussion of all causes and solutions to these seemingly cosmetic challenges is beyond the scope of this article, below are a number of considerations that can help you look and feel better.

HSN Biology Hair: Keratin, a protein made of dead cells, is the tough fibrous protein that comprises hair, which is anchored in the skin by 100,000 to 350,000 hair follicles. Within the hair bulbs at the base of hair follicles, blood vessels both nourish cells that divide and grow to create the hair shaft, and deliver hormones that modify hair structure and growth throughout life. Hair growth occurs in three phases: (1) anagen (growth phase)lasts several years for each hair strand; (2) catagen (transitional phase) – growth slows and follicles shrink over several weeks; and (3) telogen (resting phase) – hair growth stops and detaches from the hair follicle while a new hair begins the anagen phase and pushes out the old hair over several months. One-half-inch per month is the average hair growth rate.

Skin: The body’s largest organ with its own microbiome, skin provides the functions of protection, sensation, and regulation. The main skin layers are the: (1) epidermis – the outermost layer, which itself has four or five layers; consists mainly of keratin protein; creates skin tone and provides a waterproof barrier; (2) dermis – consists of two layers of connective tissue that comprise a mesh of elastin and collagen protein fibers; contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, hair follicles and sweat glands; and (3) hypodermis – comprised of fat and tissue that connects to bones and muscles.

Nails: Composed largely of keratin, nails are structurally modified hair. They are vestigial claws that aid in protecting against finger and toe trauma, grasping, and manipulating small objects.

Causes of Unhealthy HSN Unhealthy HSN can result from: (1) nutrient deficiencies; (2) toxin overload and/or a sluggish liver; (3) excess stress; (4) inadequate sleep (less than 7 hours per night); (5) hormone imbalances (estrogen, progesterone, thyroid); (6) bacterial/fungal intestinal infections (SIBO, candida, CDIF); (7) leaky gut and gut inflammation; (8) build-up of free radicals/oxidative stress; and (9) medication side effects.

Supportive Nutrition & Lifestyle Choices As with all chronic health conditions, healing begins with an alkalizing, nutrient rich diet that excludes foods that cause inflammation (including gluten, dairy, most grains, simple carbohydrates, refined vegetable oils and animal fats) or sensitivities/ allergic responses (commonly nuts, eggs, shellfish, corn, soy, conventional beef/pork/ lamb, caffeine, high FODMAPs, salicylates, sulfites, and sugar). An anti-inflammatory diet includes higher levels of monounsaturated fats (soaked nuts and seeds, olive oil), omega-3 fatty acids (especially from certain wild, cold-water fish), and as many highfiber, organic, raw (unprocessed) foods as

possible, such as low-sugar fruits, sprouted/boiled/ fermented/pressure cooked legumes, and a large variety of dark green and cruciferous vegetables.

When detoxification pathways operate inadequately, toxins seep out of the skin and undermine HSN health. Minimizing environmental toxins (found in mainstream house cleaners, laundry detergents, and body care products), and daily consumption of adequate amounts of alkalizing water and detoxifying foods, can greatly support the removal of harmful toxins through excretory systems and organs.

Supportive Dietary Supplements Biotin & Other B-Complex Vitamins: Safe, water-soluble biotin is critical to the metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose. Some limited research and testimonials support biotin supplementation to address the common results of biotin deficiency, which include brittle nails, hair loss, and skin rashes. High biotin intake, however, can interfere with hormone tests, including those for thyroid hormone and vitamin D, and can thus cause false normal or abnormal results (especially for Graves disease and other forms of hyperthyroidism).

Since vitamin B12 and folate are important to red blood cell production and oxygen transportation to nail cells, deficiencies can cause nail discoloration.

Collagen Protein: As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen supports hair, skin, nails, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments. Aged skin is well known to have reduced levels of collagen types I and III. Wrinkled and sagging skin results from slowed production of new collagen fibers, increased stiffening, breaking, loosening, and unraveling of existing collagen fibers, and the fraying and lost elasticity of the elastin network. In a 2019 systematic review of 11 randomized, placebo-controlled studies involving over 800 patients, researchers concluded that preliminary results are promising for the safe short and long-term use of oral collagen supplements for skin aging and wound healing. They further noted that future studies are needed to determine optimal dosing for various medical uses.

Detoxifying Nutrients: Excretory organs overloaded with toxins can generate liver spots, wrinkles, flabby skin, and overall poor organ function that can also negatively impact hair and nails. Key detoxifying nutrients include glutathione, milk thistle, stinging nettles, curcumin from turmeric, dandelion, burdock root, and those found in cruciferous vegetables, artichokes, caraway seeds, oranges, garlic, and onions.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA): HA is classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), a long polysaccharide made of glucuronic acid and glucosamine. While it draws up to 1000 times its weight in water per molecule, HA quality and production in the body declines with aging. Oral HA supplementation provides intense moisture for all soft tissues, including the skin/scalp, nails, eyes, and joints. One patented, clinically proven liquid HA is particularly effective because it is well-absorbed and works quickly.

Iron: Iron anemia (hemoglobin < 12 g/ dl) is common in women suffering hair loss, yet researchers continue to debate whether low stored iron levels (serum ferritin) actually trigger this health condition. Cells require iron for their supply of adequate oxygen, which in turn is required for healthy nails.

An iron deficiency can thus damage nail shape and appearance. The body best absorbs iron found in animal protein and taking plant-sourced iron with chelating vitamin C enhances its absorption in the intestines.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): This sulfur compound, naturally found in humans, treats inflammation and pain when taken orally or applied topically. Sulfur is a significant component of keratin and is antifungal and antibacterial. While research results are inconclusive, user testimonials support taking MSM orally to enhance hair growth. Sulfur has also been widely used to address various dermatological conditions, including rosacea, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and dandruff.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil): Omega-3 essential fatty acids in therapeutic doses protect the skin from the sun, keep it hydrated, and help prevent wrinkles. They also help combat psoriasis and eczema, and enhance nail shine and lubrication. Some studies have demonstrated that omega-3s, particularly their DHA component, promote hair growth.

Probiotics: The microflora of the gut are proven critical supporters of the immune, neurological, and endocrine systems.

As such, researchers have established that they are supportive in reducing eczema and psoriasis, particularly in children.

Silicon (OSA/orthosilicic acid): This trace mineral readily bonds with oxygen to form silica (also known as silicon dioxide) and is thus rarely found in nature in pure form. The Thunderbird Inn: The Hippest Hotel in Savannah

By Diane Hayden, PhD ’ve rekindled my love affair with Savannah! Going to grad school at Georgia Southern University, I spent many a night on River Street or in the historic City Market. It was a blast - thanks to a liberal open container law that lets you carouse with cup in hand from historic Jones Street to the Savannah River.

I

Savannah is the quintessential Southern city – it’s enchanting. It has soul and an edgy energy you can feel day and night.

Cobblestoned squares, manicured parks, stately Victorian-era homes and ghost stories are all set under a veil of Spanish moss.

The food and cocktail scene is exploding with award winning restaurants serving local and sustainable fare and swanky speakeasy style cocktail bars.

Lush in more ways than one, Georgia’s first city is hiding a legendary nightlife under its demure tree canopy. According to local lore, Savannah quenched General Sherman’s destructive fire by plying his army with grog, and thumbed its nose at Prohibition via a network of stills and speakeasies.

We stayed at The Thunderbird Inn (https://thethunderbirdinn. com) – a Southern-retro Inn right in downtown redefining historic Savannah's hip eccentricities and historic Americana quirkiness.

Although it is reminiscent of the free-spirited, young-again era of roadside motels, this is not your 1950s motel. Remodeled in 2018, it’s casual and fun-loving lodging. In fact, it’s so cool the fledgling Jackson Five stayed here back in the day.

Knowing me, you know it’s ecofriendly with the motto at the inn being, “the Earth is worth getting nostalgic about.” The Inn’s Go Green sustainability efforts include water conservation initiatives like low-volume irrigation in its colorful southern landscaping and water saving toilets and showers, solar panels, recycling, glass cups and mugs, and an electric car station. The rooms were fun and exceptionally clean. I loved the funky, throwback décor and they even had a rotary phone – who remembers that?!

That night we dined at Atlantic, (atlanticsavannah.com) – a cool, laid back eatery serving seasonal and locally sourced food. We tried the Chickpea Cheela which was a rolled crêpe with cashew cheese, roasted cauliflower, and coconut red curry sauce which was excellent with a little heat. The Porchetta with Napa and Red Cabbage Slaw was excellent – crispy on the outside and tender inside.

After dinner, we headed to the rooftop bar Perch, (http://www.local11ten.com/perch) - an off-the-radar type spot to snatch a couple of cocktails under the stars. With low-slung lounge chairs, bamboo planters and a canopy of trees, it’s a literal oasis on Bull Street. We had the Argument (pama liqueur, cachaça, lemon, lime, muddled orange, basil), which was named over a literal argument two bartenders had over what the drink should be named. After that we headed to Artillery, (artillerybar. com) - which clearly brings the A-game to Savannah’s cocktail scene. The ornate exterior beckons you inside this speakeasy and was a welcome addition when the owners opened the joint in a former artillery storehouse back in 2016. We sipped on a classic espresso martini and The Doc (high west double rye, china china, scrappy’s aromatic bitters, spearmint, smoked pipe tobacco) – both were fantastic.

Take the time to wander off the beaten path to find these gems and experience the history, beauty and charm of this beloved coastal city. I will definitely be back!
