I

think the title of our feature by Caroline Wetzel is so fitting for me – Dream It, Plan It, Do It. As many of you know, we celebrate 12 years of publishing starting this month. Back in 2007, my dream was to launch a single magazine. I had no idea if it would be successful, but I had passion, a dream and a laptop – which fortunately, is about all you need to start a publishing business. Now, in 2018, we are celebrating another milestone – we just received our official Certificate of Registration from the US Patent and Trademark office for ELM (Essential Living Magazines)! This is the new name of the magazines we’ll be launching nationally. Many of you have most likely seen our sister magazine - ELM Maine, which is the 2nd magazine we launched about 4 years ago to determine that we could duplicate our model in another market.

Interestingly enough, the date on our certificate is September 11th. That did not go unnoticed by me for a number of reasons. Most importantly, the significance of that date to our country. While it will always be a day that we mourn all of the lives lost, it also brought all of us closer together. To me, the significance of receiving our trademark on that date is confirmation that I am moving in the right direction. How many millions of lives could be changed to achieve amazing health, amazing relationships, and amazing lifestyles with less impact on the environment if we are able to launch magazines like this all across the country?

The number 11 is also extremely symbolic to me and my life. I was born at 8:11 in the morning. I was married on the 11th of May. We just finished 11 years of publishing. I constantly notice when the time of day is 11:11 or 1:11. Those of you who are into numerology know that the number 11 is a very powerful and spiritual number. It is a master number that represents inspiration, illumination, and spiritual enlightenment. Eleven is the number of new beginnings. The number eleven carries a vibrational frequency of balance and represents male and female equality. I am honored and thrilled to have this number connected to ELM and our expansion!

Now many of you may be asking – are we changing the name Natural Nutmeg to ELM Connecticut? That is quite the dilemma and something I’ve been struggling with for a while. So, because our mission is focused on building the holistic community, I thought I would just ask you – our reader – what would you do? Nutmeg “Nuggets” Massage Therapy for Cancer Patients

C

ancer is a word that evokes a visceral reaction in most people. In May 2010, I had my turn to react. I clearly remember my heart leaping into my throat as the words breast cancer seemed to explode from the doctor’s mouth. The slowmotion echo made my head spin as the floor dropped away beneath my feet.

A cancer diagnosis always causes some level of stress. After the initial thought about one’s own mortality, there are the practical concerns. Does my insurance cover this? Will I be able to work?

Who will care for my loved ones? Who will care for me? Am I physically and mentally capable of fighting for my life? How will treatment affect my health, my appearance, my self-confidence?

I was in massage therapy school at the time of my diagnosis.

The emotional support and access to healing treatments kept me essentially free of anxiety. The physical touch of therapeutic massage along with meditation, yoga, and Reiki helped me discover the resilience of my spirit.

Low Levels of Endorphins Associated with AutoImmune Disorders

E

ndorphins are a family of molecules produced in most cells in the body. They are important in immune function, cell growth and repair. We need adequate levels of these endorphin molecules to be healthy. Low levels are associated with autoimmune disorders.

New research is finding that Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) has a positive effect on the immune system. It is being used and studied in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, neurological problems and cancer. LDN is a TINY dose of SHORT-ACTING Naltrexone (just 1-6mg) given daily, that helps signal the immune system to heal you.

LDN specifically binds to the endorphin receptor for OGF. OGF, or Opioid Growth Factor, normally sits on that receptor.

Naltrexone displaces OGF for just a few hours, and as a result, your body thinks you don’t have enough OGF so it makes more, plus it makes more receptors and the receptors are hungrier for OGF. LDN also has a second mechanism of action – it decreases brain inflammation by decreasing the activity of microglia, the immune cells of the brain. LDN blocks Toll-like receptors on sensory nerves, which may help pain patients greatly. Clinical trials have shown LDN to be effective in treating chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia along with IBS, Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, depression and Parkinson’s Disease.

I have been prescribing the off-label use of LDN since 2013 and use it in all autoimmune disorders. It works incredibly well for most, but not all, people with few, if any, side effects. In patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis where auto-antibody levels can be easily monitored, I have come to expect to see a gradual lowering of these auto-antibodies.

LDN must be made by a compounding pharmacy and, once the final dose is determined, the cost is generally about $1 per pill, regardless of dose. Pioneer Pharmacy in Vernon, CT has organized several LDN conferences and is a great resource for all things LDN, as is ldnscience.org.

Hartford Baking Company – Artisanal Quality and Locally Made

H

artford Baking Company started from a series of farmer’s market stands in Hartford – at Billings Forge in particular – and grew into a tiny café location on New Park Avenue, West Hartford in September of 2010. The first day of operations, the company baked 24 loaves of bread. Now, they bake thousands of loaves of bread nightly, distributing the same artisanal quality of the original production to two café locations, in addition to multiple local restaurants from Massachusetts to the shoreline. So how do you grow a company, over the course of eight years, without compromising quality or values? We sat down with President, Scott Kluger, to find out more.

NN: What inspired you to bring artisan bread to the Hartford community?

SK: I’m originally from Hartford County and West Hartford is my hometown. I have a great love of simple, quality foods, and I wanted to bring this here.

NN: What makes your bread special and unique?

SK: The danger of growth is that you can compromise quality. But in our case, it’s actually the opposite. When we started, it was trial by fire. In the beginning, we didn’t know how to properly manage fermentation. Flavor was inconsistent, and we weren’t able to manage, for example, sourdough starters. Sourdough starters ferment for a very long time, creating flavor and

texture. Our starters have improved, and we can do a 20-hour fermentation, giving the bread much more flavor, consistency, and quality. Flour, water, salt, and yeast continue to be the only four ingredients in the majority of our breads. There are no artificial fillers here, no cost cutting procedures. Just great bread, that is easier to digest, as it’s not filled with preservatives, and the gluten breaks down naturally during the fermentation process.

NN: Tell us more about your café locations, and what you serve at them?

SK: The cafés are so much more than just bread. We have an incredible sandwich menu on our artisan breads and the bread really makes the sandwich. Trust me, anytime you’ve had an incredible sandwich, you’ve actually had incredible bread. We are expanding our menu to include beer and wine at our Farmington Avenue loca-

tion, and a late night bar menu, which will include items such as a house burger, grilled vegetable street tacos, and cheese and charcuterie boards. Of course, you can’t go wrong with our signature brioche giant pretzel with house grain mustard and a local craft beer, especially at this time of year.

NN: What inspired you to create a brioche giant pretzel? Sounds very intriguing.

SK: A big foundation of Hartford Baking Company was my experience traveling in Europe and learning and observing traditional baking methods. The HBC signature giant brioche pretzel is actually a hybrid of classic French brioche technique and the traditional German giant pretzel served during Oktoberfest. Our version is buttery, light, decadent, and very addictive.

NN: What else can we find at your café locations?

SK: One thing that I love about our café locations is that we are as serious about coffee as we are about bread.

We get coffee beans from some of the best roasters in the region, and we have a full line of expertly crafted espresso beverages, as well as specialty hand brewed preparations – such as French press, cold brew, and pour overs. These different methods extract the flavor of the coffee beans differently, leading to completely unique experiences with the same beans. The beans we use are also sourced from some top quality local producers. And then, there’s our pasty program, which we haven’t even talked about.

NN: Ok, great, tell us about the pastry!

SK: All of our pastry is made by hand. The quality is unparalleled. We make the best scones, muffins, croissants, and seasonal crostatas. Our company really grew out of pastry. My mom’s recipes were the foundation of Hartford Baking Company. She is still very involved in the business, working with the pastry chefs on a weekly basis, and we love to take the pastry she makes at home and figure out how to mass produce it, without compromising quality.

The Magic Of Curiosity

hen is the last time you did something for the first time?

September is the perfect month to get out of your head and into your life. We are creatures of habit and love the familiarity of our day-to-day schedule. While there is nothing wrong in structure, when we do the same thing every day, and especially when we forget to bring a sense of gratitude to our life, we become numb to the extraordinary that can be found in the seemingly ordinary moments of our life.

When we step out of the familiar we open the door for awe and wonder to enter. Both of these are powerful strengths to cultivate as they allow us to expand our vision, our passion and our potential.

How would your day change if you removed all assumptions, expectations and preconceptions? What would your life look like if you saw it through a beginners mind? A beginners mind is a wonderful state to create and cultivate. It gives us the opportunity to wipe our slate clean from our conditioned way of being (if only for a moment) and creates an opportunity for us to view the world, and our own life through fresh eyes. A beginners mind sees the world through the lens of possibility and brings with it a sense of excitement and enthusiasm.

When we are in flow we become lost in the moment and as we focus on the task at hand the stress and worries of our life slip away.

Flow is good for your health, your mind and your life.

Spiritual Breadcrumbs

I

don’t recall hearing the word “spirituality” until my early 20s. It wasn’t an obvious part of my upbringing. But being that religion is one of the branches off of spirituality, maybe it was, albeit a slanted perception. I went to church with my dad and we would sit or stand in the foyer, prior to the main church area. The doors were closed between the foyer and the rest of everything so we heard the mass over the loud speaker. We didn’t actually hear much, however, because the men were busy talking about their week. So, basically, there was nothing there for me. Nor was there anything spiritual about going to a Catholic school except the overt presence of the nuns.

“Hey, how did you start having a spiritual practice?” is asked of many people who seem to have found their way. Some know the exact moment, and some respond, “Hmmm… I really don’t know. I guess it just found me.” That’s me. Basically, it was pain that brought me to spirituality, as it does for many. I was going through a divorce in the 80’s and was afraid of my future. I found myself sitting with a psychic. I have no idea how I found her, but I did. My reality cracked open and I found myself embracing concepts of synchronicity, mysticism, dream worlds, energy, and the presence of powers greater than me that love and guide me, including guides, power animals, and angels.

It was a brand new world and I jumped in 100% and felt at home.

notice the crumbs, because they certainly are there.) My very first class at St. Joe’s in 1998 required a 20-minute presentation on some aspect of counseling - addictions, abuse, codependence, anorexia. I chose forgiveness, which the teacher questioned.

But after the presentation, which included a brief meditation, most of the class had tears in their eyes, including the teacher – a priest – and I was urged to “take it on the road.” This would be my first break out as a teacher of spiritually related “stuff.”

I called West Hartford Adult Ed and told them my name and that I had a 3-hour class on forgiveness. The only question the woman asked was, “What date were you thinking of?”

Wow. Wasn’t ready for that. But after years of experiencing ease like this, I am committed to the notion that we are not meant to swim uphill when we are on the right path and doing what we are meant to do.

From there, I expanded into several other town systems with the forgiveness workshop and then chakra studies. I even braved offering meditation and Reiki classes at Manchester Community College in 2001.

The doors swung open wide and I have been teaching 14 different spiritually based topics there for 17 years now. I have taught at many colleges, town systems, retreat centers, hospitals, and corporations. I am a board-certified Licensed Professional Counselor, professional life coach and certified spiritual healer, just to name a few of my credentials. There are many more. How did this all happen? It just did.

When the previous owner, Jon, was getting ready to transition the Door Opener Magazine many years ago, he invited me to take it over. I was not looking to be a publisher or editor, but something felt right and it clicked. Of course, the answer was yes.

My thoughts began to shift to viewing soul purpose, life lessons, and spiritual contracts as foundational pieces of my life.

Fear was a given as I contacted new places to offer my classes, stepped away from my 25-year career at a law firm, and started my own counseling practice. I was met with open arms. It was becoming my new normal, but I was not used to it, for sure.

Discernment and taking the first step are always important pieces to the puzzle.

However, just because something is seemingly easy doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. You must be the strongest participant in your own life, not sitting by the door hoping something will come knocking. Take the first step, test the waters, and see what the reception is. The ease must be accompanied by a strong sense of internal conviction, balance, and connection. If there is dis-ease, look at something a bit more and perhaps walk away, or depending on how it feels, do more work to move it forward. I walked sometimes, but continued to change and expand. I am certainly not done. More change is coming (Door Opener magazine back in hard copy maybe?). Life is fulfilling and fun. I will continue to keep my glasses on so I don’t miss the guideposts. I urge you to do the same.

tress is something we all have experienced. We have all dealt with digestive issues at some point in our life, whether it be heartburn, gas, diarrhea, constipation: the list goes on. We have heard that stress can affect the digestive tract, but what about the reverse? Anyone who has ever had a stomach ache knows it can put you in a disagreeable mood. Our digestive tract is about 9 meters long (30 feet) from start to finish. Millions of nerves move the intestinal walls which communicate with the brain and control the digestive processes. This large organ is a vital piece of how we break down food and absorb nutrients, but it also plays a role in mood.

Serotonin Levels and Digestion Scientists have found that 95% of serotonin is found in the gut.

Serotonin is a chemical used for nerve cells to communicate with one another and is important in stabilizing mood. When levels of serotonin are altered, anxiety and even depression can result. Many medications used in combating anxiety and depression are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), with the common side effect of affecting the digestive tract. It is understandable that with so much of our serotonin being in our intestines, this type of medication would also alter our digestion and bowel habits. Another less commonly known fact about serotonin is its importance in helping regulate inflammation in the body. When there is something that the body deems as an injury or a ‘foreign invader’, such as bacteria, serotonin production is increased to modulate immune cell response. So, if there is a physical injury such as microtears or irritation in the intestines due to chronic constipation, or even due to an inflammatory disease such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel disease, serotonin can be altered.

Probiotics for Digestion Probiotics are something we hear of often in this day and age.

They are known to help with digestive complaints and keeping you regular, but there is another important reason for using probiotics.

Research says that the surface area of our intestines amounts to 30 to 40 square meters, which is roughly the size of half a badminton court, populated by trillions of bacteria. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that help us to digest our food, process certain nutrients, and even protect us from harmful bacteria and viruses.

The nerves that line our intestines are constantly interacting and communicating with this gut flora. If there is an imbalance in the bacteria, or if some bacteria, fungi or virus has made its way in, our body may be exposed to components it finds toxic or irritating.

Inflammation will then occur, which can cause constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain or discomfort. Also, with unbalanced micro-

Preventing Cancer Naturally with Nutrition and Exercise

T

o better prevent cancer occurrence or recurrence, the underlying causes of cancer such as DNA mutations and cellular metabolic dysfunction must be addressed. Thankfully, our body contains DNA repair enzymes and metabolic pathways to correct defects before they get out of control, or utilizes programmed cell death (apoptosis) for when cells become too abnormal for repair. Current estimates state up to 90% of cancers worldwide are due to environmental factors and could be preventable given the right dietary and lifestyle interventions. The predominant environmental factors that increase incidence of cancer are smoking, poor diet (fried foods, red meat), alcohol ingestion, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, infections, stress, obesity and physical inactivity.

In order for our inherent repair mechanisms to work optimally, they require healthy dietary, lifestyle, and nutritional interventions.

Eating a Whole Foods Diet Eating whole, clean, organic foods limit carcinogen and toxin intake and help cellular metabolism function properly by providing key nutrients for cell structure and repair. Diets rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and green tea consistently protect against DNA damage and limit cancer occurrence. The main goals are to ingest these nutrient dense, clean, whole foods to improve detoxification of cancer-causing constituents before cancer can be created in the body, as well as starve out any cancer cells currently in the body.

Mathematical models found diets containing > 600 g/d (1.32 lb) of non-starchy vegetables and fruits, > 25 g/d of fiber and < 2 g/d sodium were optimal for cancer prevention. With Otto Warburg’s discovery that cancer cells predominantly use fermentation for energy, many dietary interventions that reduce sugars and carbohydrates

can successfully starve out cancer cells.

Hence, periodic ketogenic diets (>75% fat, <20% protein, <5% carbohydrate) not only show promise in reducing cancer growth in hard to treat cancers, but can be used preventatively as well. Performing periodic fasting, or periodic calorie restriction, is also beneficial in cancer prevention. It’s also important to limit salt intake, especially in combination with nitrates (deli meats, hot dogs), as they both can increase the risk of stomach cancer. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, on the other hand, contain chemoprotective polyphenols which protect against reactive oxygen species and improve detoxification, thereby limiting toxin exposure and DNA damage.

Regular Exercise & Healthy Weight Maintenance Since most cancers are diagnosed from age 45-84, it’s relevant and effective for adults of all ages to work on cancer prevention regularly. It’s very easy to fall prey to poor lifestyle habits as an adult and neglect exercise, but it’s imperative to realize that obesity and being sedentary are common environmental risk factors found in cancer.

Studies show exercise and a healthy weight are especially beneficial in preventing breast and colon cancer. Exercise enhances blood flow to tissues for healing, stimulates anti-inflammatory pathways, and promotes growth of new mitochondria, which are responsible for creating energy in the cell and can trigger apoptosis in severely damaged cells. It’s important to note that both being sedentary and overtraining to the point of exhaustion can reduce immune function, so moderation is key to immune improvement.

these nutrients help prevent cancer growth.

Vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin (vitamin B2), beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc can reduce cancer risk by reducing oxidative and DNA damage. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, peppers, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts while vitamin E is found in sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, wheat germ oil, spinach, broccoli, and kiwi. Beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, butternut squash, red peppers, apricots, broccoli, and peas while high selenium food sources are Brazil nuts, tuna, halibut, sardines, turkey, beef, eggs, baked beans, oatmeal and spinach.

Additionally, zinc may decrease cancer risk and progression because zinc and zincfinger proteins inhibit inflammatory pathways, reduce risk of infections, and can even reduce angiogenesis and increase apoptosis in cancer cells. Food sources of zinc include oysters, beef, crab, lobster, baked beans, chicken, yogurt, cashews, and chickpeas. Riboflavin is required as a cofactor for several DNA repair enzymes and is found in beef liver, oats, yogurt, clams, Portobello mushrooms, almonds, and eggs. Try to incorporate several of these aforementioned measures daily to help support cancer prevention.

Natural Prevention for Breast Cancer

hile preventing breast cancer is not an absolute, lowering your risks is an ideal way to do the best you can to stay healthy. Eating a healthy diet, consistent activity and movement, adequate sun exposure or optimizing your vitamin D levels, and effectively managing your emotional health are the cornerstones of just about any cancer prevention program, including breast cancer. For example, regular physical activity has been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing breast cancer by as much as 50%, once diagnosed.

The following lifestyle strategies will help you to further lower your breast cancer risk: • Get Annual Screenings for the most common risks. This would include routine blood work to review iron levels, blood sugar (another high risk is insulin resistance) and an annual Breast Thermogram. Breast thermography is one of the best screenings to evaluate early risk as long as it is done right. While not a replacement for mammography, it provides information that a mammogram cannot and will evaluate early risk that is controllable through holistic medicine.

• Optimize your vitamin D. Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature's most potent cancer fighters. This is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself from cancer. Vitamin D is able to enter cancer cells and trigger apoptosis (cell death). Studies at the State University of New York at Albany, found that when they injected a potent form of vitamin D into human breast cancer cells, 50% of those cells died within days. The conclusion was that vitamin D could work as well at killing cancer cells as the toxic breast cancer drug Tamoxifen, without any of the detrimental side effects and at a tiny fraction of the cost.

• Get your Vitamin D levels checked. It is hard to keep them at optimal levels if you live in the northeast. Additionally, the routine laboratory ranges are too broad according to many sources and while your doctor may tell you your Vit D level is OK, it may not be.

• Get plenty of natural vitamin A. There is evidence that this vitamin may play a role in preventing breast cancer. It's always best to obtain it from naturally rich vitamin A foods, rather than a supplement. The best sources are organic egg yolks, raw butter, raw whole milk, and beef or chicken liver.

• However, there is also evidence that supplementing vitamin A can negate the benefits of vitamin D. This means that it's essential to have the proper ratio of vitamin D to vitamin A in your body. The magic of our body is, if the sources of vitamins are in their most natural form, your body will know what to do. So ideally, you want to provide your foundation of vitamin A and vitamin D in such a way that your body understands what it is getting and can regulate both systems naturally. This is best done by eating colorful vegetables (for vitamin A) and by exposing your skin to sun every day (for vitamin D) for approximately 20 minutes.

• Avoid charred meats. Charcoal or flame broiled meat is linked with increased breast cancer risk due to Acrylamide— a carcinogen created when starchy foods are baked, roasted or fried.

• Avoid unfermented soy products. There is so much controversy regarding the use of soy. Unfermented soy is high in plant estrogens, or phytoestrogens, also known as isoflavones. While the studies vary, some seem to show that soy appears to work in concert with human estrogen to increase breast cell proliferation due to its phytoestrogen effect and can increase cell mutation and push you into a dangerous estrogen dominant condition.

• Improve your insulin receptor sensitivity.

Insulin resistance and diabetes is becoming rampant. Not only does it make it difficult to lose weight, it increases the risk of cancers of all types as cancer uptakes sugar as fuel for the cells.

• Maintain a healthy body weight. It's important to lose excess body fat because fat produces estrogen. Finding a lifestyle that helps you maintain optimal weight is always better than fad diets. Find what works and stick with it.

• Increase your intake of whole foods especially greens. While recommendation by Harvard School of Medicine say that we should have 9-15 servings of vegetables and fruit daily, this is not happening. The average American eats 1-1.5 servings per day. Greens are not only high in phytonutrients that scavenge estrogens but are also powerful antioxidants that can clean up damaged cells.

• Avoid drinking alcohol, or at least limit your alcoholic drinks to one per day.

• Avoid wearing underwire bras. There is a good deal of data that metal underwire bras increase your breast cancer risk.

• Avoid electromagnetic fields as much as possible. Our bodies and our cells function first electrically then chemically.

The buildup of negative ions can damage cells and increase risk. Try earthing or in Japan it’s called “shinrin roku”, also known as “nature bathing” which is a health practice prescribed by their doctors. Rethink How You Are Taking Pictures!

By Regina Sanchez am currently in the midst of scanning two very large photo orders for two different clients. It’s so much fun for me because I love pictures and I love seeing the memories families have captured. Sometimes the individuals I may be doing Memory Books for have Alzheimer’s or Dementia and I really can’t converse with them about the process. But give me a little time and I can still tell the family stories…just by looking at photos.

I

I did three Albums for a woman who has Alzheimer’s (I’ll call her Joan). I’ve never met her. Her attorney hired me because Joan’s Patient Advocate felt it might be helpful for her to have a book of her memories. After going through a number of boxes, I was able to capture 3 different stories. They were a family that loved to have gatherings in their home. So I did an album called, “The Celebration of Family.” They also did a lot of traveling abroad. The next album was “The Celebration of Travel.” Lastly, they raised Weimaraner dogs and won awards at Madison Square Garden. You got it. I did “The Celebration of Family Pets.”

After I completed these three Albums, I felt like I belonged to the family. Weird…I know. I can’t explain it but somehow I felt part of the family as I was capturing their memories and helping to tell their story. The husband has passed away and Joan now has Alzheimer’s. Seeing the beauty of their memories made me feel sad that he was gone and Joan was suffering.

One client I have so far scanned about 9,000 photos. These photos are so much fun because I am seeing the family growth for the past 60 plus years. I’ve seen the daughter as an infant to now a beautiful attorney. I’ve seen her riding horses, traveling with her mom and dad and enjoying special moments with her mom. I can tell she has a special relationship with her mom. They have a lovely mother/daughter bond. This family captured the beauty of their events, travels and special family times.

My other client has thousands of photos but the majority of those photos are scenery and not people. I’m capturing stories from these photos but I am definitely learning something in the process.

At some point, the children will have all these photos. But 70% of them won’t mean much to them because it is scenery of places their mom and dad traveled. There are pictures of people but not enough.

The scenery pictures are lovely because they traveled to lovely places. But how much better the pictures would be if there were family members in them.

What’s the point of my writing? Think about when you are taking a picture and what you are trying to capture. If you have a bunch of pictures without people, someday they will mean nothing to your family members. Capture people in those pictures. Let your family see the growth of each member. Let them see the beautiful changes that take place as they age.

How much more fun will that be as your photos get handed down to generations to come.

Dermaplaning: The Hottest New Skincare Treatment

By Diane Hayden, PhD and Patricia Hunsberger One of the trendiest exfoliation options today is dermaplaning, which is performed using a sterile surgical scalpel (not as scary as it sounds!) to manually exfoliate dead skin cells from the face. I had the exciting opportunity to sit down with Patricia Hunsberger, esthetician and owner at Nature’s Pure Skincare in Ridgefield to experience a treatment which I’ll describe shortly.

• It is a great option for clients with sensitive skin, Rosacea, and pregnant women who are looking for a deep exfoliation.

Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method to the top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, dead skin layer, and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz. This treatment results in ultra-smooth, fresh, and brighter skin. By removing that dead layer and hair from the face, the skin is evened out, and it helps with cell metabolism, which helps new skin come to the surface. Dermaplaning cleverly triggers the cell regeneration process and improves the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The effects of the procedure are instant, leaving your skin with a smooth appearance and a radiant glow. Along with the removal of fine hairs, it results in healthier skin that feels silkier.

After one, I was hooked. It was so relaxing I might have fallen asleep had I not been asking Patricia a million questions for this article. She then applied a Neogenesis fruit enzyme mask to break the bond of dead cellular buildup and oil/ pollution buildup on the skin. This is used to increase the effectiveness of the dermaplaning. Then the procedure started with a tool that looked just like a tiny butter knife. After she ran the tool across my skin a few times I wasn’t concerned at all about how it would feel, as it felt just like lightly running your fingernail across your skin.

Following the treatment, Patricia applied Neogenesis stem cell serum and red light therapy for about 10-12 minutes. Again, I could have fallen asleep if we weren’t talking so much! After this, a cooling mask is applied again with red light therapy for 5-7 minutes.

Then Patricia hot toweled the mask off and applied more stem cell serum and stem cell moisturizer.

The therapy lasts about an hour and Patricia ends it with a scalp massage which is a nice treat! I was shocked to notice that my skin felt softer than it had in years – like many years! My skin tone was drastically improved and evened out. I also noticed a softening of fine lines around my eyes, forehead and frown lines immediately. That day I left feeling amazing, but the next day when I went to apply my normal makeup, I can’t tell you the difference I noticed. My makeup went on like butter and I literally felt airbrushed!

After treatment, you do need to refrain from being in direct sunlight for a minimum of 48 hours and continual wearing of sunscreen is strongly advised. In addition, Patricia recommended not using any products with glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, Retin A or Rentinol for at least 5 days, and no exfoliating for 3 days following the treatment (why would you need to?). You can return to your regular skincare routine thereafter and make sure to stay hydrated.

Patricia explained that one of the reasons skin can look dull and have buildup is from ongoing dehydration. She suggested drinking at least 64 oz of water per day.

Stem cells for skincare I had to ask Patricia about the science behind using stem cells in a skincare product. Latest research is showing that stem

Dream It. Plan It. Do It: Live Your Values and Achieve Your Financial Goals

ave you ever heard the saying that you can tell what your priorities are by looking at your calendar? The logic is that you make time in your schedule for the people and activities that are most important to you. We can apply the same approach to your finances. What you choose to spend your money on is a reflection of what is important to you.

Just look at your expenses on your credit card statement. If you value convenience over cost, you may see a greater proportion of your food expenses used for eating out, rather than buying groceries and preparing meals at home. If you prioritize function over form, you may discover that you do not spend a significant amount of money on a regular basis on new, fashionable clothing.

Yes there are a few universals in life.

We all need somewhere to live. We must eat. We have to engage in some degree of self-care. And we have to be able to pay our bills. You know as well as I do that how much each of us spends on these necessities varies dramatically from person to person according to each individual’s priorities.

That’s why it’s so tough for some couples to deal with finances together. For instance, many couples agree that saving money is important, but they may struggle to agree on how much they should save for different areas of life. One person might think that it’s most critical to save for retirement, whereas the other partner might believe it’s more important to set aside money for their children’s education.

Unless both partners acknowledge that they value savings differently and agree on how much they are willing to set aside for each priority, they may struggle to follow a savings strategy for either themselves or their children.

Once you realize for yourself that effective money management boils down to aligning your values with your savings and spending behaviors, you will experience a renewed sense of confidence, control, and comfort with your approach to your personal finances. The following are a few strategies that you may find helpful for identifying your values and aligning your personal financial behaviors to them.

Start With What’s Important Give yourself a little time and space to reflect. It’s okay if thinking about your values and your finances stirs up different emotions for you. For many individuals, these topics are deeply personal and are often connected with other significant topics, like family, spirituality, and the purpose of life.

Start by asking yourself one question: “What do I need to pay for in my life?”

Observe whatever bubbles up for you, and write this down. Close your eyes, breathe in deeply, exhale slowly. Then ask yourself the question a second time: “What do I need to pay for in my life?” Allow different thoughts to emerge, new views on what needs might exist, and then write these down along with your previous answers. • What do I want to spend my money on?

• How do I wish my financial life could be different?

If no answers to these questions emerge for you, refrain from judging. Allow space for your thoughts and feelings to process each question. If still nothing bubbles up, ask other, related questions that will help you uncover more information for yourself.

For example, if you struggle to connect with “How do I wish my financial life could be different?” consider asking instead “How do I wish my life could be?”

This introspection is intended to provide insight into your financial and lifestyle values so that you have increased clarity around what is important to you. If you are in a relationship, invite your partner to complete this exercise, too. It may be informative to your partner and the two of you can share your answers and discuss where you have similar needs, wants, and wishes for your lives.

Explore Your Finances Next, collect the last few months of your various financial statements. Take a

little time to look at each of them; review your investment accounts, your credit cards, your bank accounts, and your insurance. Observe the inflows and outflows.

Look at how the account sizes change over time. Recall the circumstances that prompted you to initiate deposits and withdrawals.

With a gentle, curious, and non-judgmental spirit look at how you are spending, saving, and investing your money.

What do you notice as you look at your statements? Are the line items in the statements what you expect to see? Are there any expenses that surprise you? Are there patterns in your behavior that you see? Pause for a moment and pull out your answers to the three questions you answered earlier about your values – your needs, wants, and wishes. Review these answers again.

Now look back at your financial statements and compare them to your personal values assessment answers. What do you observe at this time? To what extent do your financial choices align to your needs, wants and wishes? Are you spending your money on things that you claim are important to you?

If this is the first time you are going through a process like this, it can be overwhelming; some people consider it scary. The novelty and discomfort will subside over time, as you continuously conduct both your personal assessment of your values as well as your exploration of your finances. The key takeaway from this experience is to deepen your understanding of your current financial behaviors and to have an initial perspective on the extent to which your actions do or do not align to what you say is important to you.

discipline required to strive for what they truly need, want and wish for in life is harder for them to do than it is for them to continue to operate in the financial uncertainty that they have grown accustomed to living every day. If this describes your mindset, then I strongly encourage you to constructively challenge yourself: is this really how you want to live your life? Take to heart the famous words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.”

You are powerful. Each moment of every day, whether you realize it or not, you are making decisions that impact your financial success. When you refrain from splurging on that designer bag that you know you don’t need because you have several at home that you already don’t use. When you make that special cup of coffee at home rather than buying it daily from a shop on your way into work. When you invest in companies that share your commitment to sustainability, the environment, and women in leadership roles rather than just put that money in a fund that you don’t understand, you are making informed financial decisions that may positively impact you both today and in the future.

Ask yourself: do you make your decisions out of exhaustion, out of habit, or out of conviction? Do you want to make decisions regarding your finances with confidence? Do you aspire to be as powerful as you can be managing your money? Are you ready to exert as much control as you can over your savings and spending decisions? Is now your time to envision the life you want and make it a reality by following a holistic financial plan?

Create a Plan In life there are things that you can’t control and things that you can control.

While you can’t predict when you might experience a health issue, you can choose to eat foods that nourish your body and sustain your energy. While you can’t avoid the pain that comes with some relationships, you can manage the grief you experience with help from mental health professionals.

In the same way, while you can’t control stock market returns or know with certainty whether a new career opportunity will reap financial rewards, you can navigate financial uncertainty with a holistic financial plan aligned to your values. A holistic financial plan starts with what is important to you: those needs, wants, and wishes you identified through your personal assessment become a prioritized list of financial goals. Each goal is rank ordered, with an estimated amount of money required to fund the goal and a date when you will pay for the goal. Your needs are your most important goals, whereas your wants are next important, and your wishes are “nice to have” goals that you would like to fund if you have the ability to do so.

Then a holistic financial plan incorporates all dimensions of your personal finances including, but not limited to, your income, your expenses, your investments, your insurance, what you own and what you owe. These different pieces, together with your goals rooted in your values, complete your total financial picture. Once you have this financial picture in place, you can make assumptions around how likely you are to achieve your goals and what savings, spending, investment, and insurance decisions you can do differently to set yourself up for success going forward.

You are not alone in this process. Healthy Aging Primer, Part 2: How to Increase Health Span & Longevity

But does your aging process haunt you? Are you concerned about doing all you can to age in a way that will ensure greater quality of life and longevity? Part 1 of this healthy aging primer addressed three leading scientific theories of aging (telomere, free radical, and glycosylation) and seven recommended healthy habits, including a plant-based diet and critical caloric restriction. Although a comprehensive list is beyond the scope of this article, below are some suggestions of some of the dietary supplements that can start you down the path toward your healthy aging goal.

Ample scientific evidence supports supplementing with certain nutrients to suppress the inflammation and free radical damage that are linked to underlying aging processes. While the

most active, best-absorbed forms of the nutrients discussed below (in alphabetical order) will provide the greatest protection, many of the nutrients’ standard, more affordable versions also promote healthy aging.

Detoxifying Amino Acids Aging decreases sulfur-containing cysteine and methionine, which are important for body detoxification. Their levels also dictate to a great degree how much the body produces cellular glutathione, dubbed the “master antioxidant.” Scientific research in animals has established that cysteine (as N-acetyl cysteine/ NAC) supplementation greatly extends life span. Dietary sources of these amino acids include whey protein (ideally grass fed, organic, micro-filtered isolate), ingestion of which mimics longevity-promoting calorie restriction.

Antioxidants The levels of antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase/SOD, glutathione peroxidase) in the body determine mammalian lifespan because they are critical to detoxification and protecting cells from oxidative damage. An antioxidantrich diet can thus reduce the risk of multiple major chronic diseases linked to premature death, including heart disease and cancer.

Carotenoids: Over 400 naturally occurring plant pigments, called carotenoids, function as potent antioxidants. Researchers have found that tissue carotenoid content appears to be the most significant factor in determining a mammal’s lifespan. Carotenoids also slow the natural shrinking of the thymus gland that accompanies aging. Among the carotenoids available as supplements are: (1) beta-carotene - pro-vitamin A; 10% converts to vitamin A according to body need; (2) astaxanthin - a free-radical fighter that is 40 times stronger than beta-carotene, 550 times stronger than vitamin E, and 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C; animal and limited human studies indicate it supports immunity, vision, skin, athletic endurance, male fertility, and brain and cardiovascular health; (3) lutein/zeaxanthin – according to studies, this combination, with other nutrients, reduces the risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and cataracts; and (4) lycopene – the most potent carotenoid against oxidative stress from highly reactive singlet oxygen; considered supportive of male infertility, and protective against prostate and other cancers, ARMD, and cataracts.

Curcumin (as Theracurmin®/Meriva®/ BCM95®): Recent studies have demonstrated that curcumin from turmeric, and its metabolite tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), increase mean lifespan of at least three organisms (the nematode roundworm, fruit fly Drosophila, and mouse). Their positive effects are thought likely to arise from the beneficial regulation of oxidative stress responses and age-related genes. These studies provide a solid basis for both future human clinical trials and nutritional intervention in aging and age-associated human disorders.

Flavonoids: This class of polyphenols/ antioxidants is principally responsible for the colors of fruits and flowers, and protects plants against environmental stress. Flavonoids enable the human body to combat inflammation, allergens, viruses, and carcinogens. The best supplements options include those high in oligomeric proanthocyanadins (OPCs), such as grapeseed extract, pycnogenol, green tea extract, trans-resveratrol (from Japanese knotweed or red wine), and ginkgo biloba extract (GBE-24% standardized ).

Selenium (as L-Selenomethionine): This essential trace mineral affects all elements of immunity, including the development and expression of all white blood cells. Its availability in the body regulates the activity of glutathione peroxidase. Studies have proven its ability to increase thymus gland function, the activity of natural killer cells, and destruction of tumor cells.

Vitamin C (Lyposomal/EsterC): Studies have established vitamin C as critical to the suppression of oxidative stress that protects proteins and fats from free radical damage.

This process increases the life span of immune cells, reduces infection-related cellular damage, and may also help prevent the onset of infections. Maintaining adequate plasma levels of vitamin C is also associated with weight loss and healthy weight maintenance, well-established as supportive of longer health and life spans.

Mitochondrial Supporters PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline quinine): Although studied to a limited degree, this nutrient has been shown to: (1) activate genes that promote formation of new mitochondria (cellular powerhouses); (2) increase cellular energy; and (3) interact with genes that directly impact mitochondrial health. These genes support healthy body weight, normal fat and sugar metabolism, and youthful cellular proliferation. A small human study in 2013 confirmed that,

as in animals, PQQ increases antioxidant potential, positively impacts inflammatory markers, and influences energy-related metabolism and neurologic functions.

CoQ10 (As Ubiquinol): This antioxidant, which Stephen Sinatra, MD, FACC, calls “the spark of life,” is critical to the generation of cellular energy (ATP) and enables oxygen utilization. It is highly concentrated in organs with higher energy requirements (especially those that manufacture it, the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas), but is also found in every cell of the body. In his book entitled The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won’t Prevent Heart Disease, Dr. Sinatra recommends at least 100mg twice per day, especially for every patient taking a statin drug.

Ideally, ubiquinol (the active, reduced form that is absorbed up to eight times better than regular CoQ10) should be taken with a fat, only in the morning and afternoon.

R-Lipoic Acid: This potent form of water-and-fat-soluble alpha lipoic acid: (1) is critical to mitochondrial function because it is essential to the extraction of energy from food; (2) counteracts mitochondrial and other cellular free radicals that cause oxidative stress (thus protecting especially brain, liver, and heart cells); and (3) recycles other antioxidants like glutathione and vitamins C and E. There is evidence that it can reduce age-promoting protein glycation damage.

L-Taurine: This amino acid regulates the enzymes that harvest energy from food.

It is highly concentrated within mitochondria, particularly in those of the heart, muscles, brain, and retina. The energy crisis that results from its depletion in mammals

causes accelerated aging. Taurine supplementation can reduce oxidative stress, maintain/restore mitochondrial function in aging cells, and even help preserve cognition and memory.

Other Aging-Optimization Nutrients Vitamin D: (1) inhibits inflammatory response; (2) deficiency is linked to cognitive impairment; (3) reduces mortality risk by 30% in patients with cardiovascular disease who have a normal intake (heartprotective blood values should be 42-100 nmol/l); (3) higher serum concentrations are associated with longer telomere length of white blood cells.

Fish Oil (Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids): As discussed in Part 1 of this article, telomere length is tied to longevity. Telomeres progressively shorten as part of the aging process, causing organs to atrophy and brain cells to die. In 2011, JAMA reported a cardiac study that demonstrated “a potentially new link between Omega-3 fatty acids and the aging process.” Researchers found that patients with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their white blood cells experienced significantly less shortening of telomeres over five years, as compared with patients with lower omega-3 levels.

Nicotinamide Riboside (NR): This cellregenerating nutrient is a form of vitamin B3 that efficiently increases NAD+ (present in every human cell; contributes to regulating cell aging, DNA repair, and the transfer of energy from fatty acids and glucose to the mitochondria). As a dietary supplement, NR has the potential to improve metabolic and age-related disorders (including high-fat-diet-induced obesity), and tissue

damage, characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction.

Benfotiamine (Fat-Soluble B1): According to lab studies, this B vitamin functions as an antioxidant and can prevent glycation. Human studies have proven that it can help prevent the damage resulting from glycation, especially in diabetics.

Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (P5P/Coenzyme B6): This active form of B6 inhibits the glycation of fats and proteins.

Probiotics: While scientists have studied probiotics (“good” bacteria similar to those in the human gut) extensively, much about their function and benefits remains unknown, and their effectiveness varies among strains and products (particularly because not all successfully adhere to gut cells to populate the intestines). Studies have proven, however, that taking probiotics can improve gut function and other aspects of human health, including immunity.

While inclusion of all of the above nutrients in a supplements regimen would be excessive, including some, along with diet modification to reduce inflammation and free radicals, and other lifestyle changes, certainly makes sense for anyone seeking to live healthier and longer.

Monetize Your Mission

It seems like such a simple solution. Raise your standards and voila! – more highly motivated and abundant clients. The answer may be simple, but the reality is more complicated. Let’s first look at where most of us holistic and spiritual professionals stand today in our business.

Unfortunately, most do not charge enough money for services and accept any unqualified client who will pay our undervalued rate. Then WE struggle to pay our bills. However, many holistic professionals are fearful of raising rates because clients will leave. What we need to realize is that these clients are not truly committed to their own well-being if they are not willing to pay fully for valuable expertise. They most likely don’t see the value in our services because think of all of the things this same person is willing to pay full price for (clothes, dining out, new car, vacation, etc.)

To make matters worse, most of us gave up a comfy paycheck to do the work we love...and now we’re running our dream business with sub-standard business practices compounded with an unwanted energetic match with our current clients!

It's really a simple, but unfortunate equation. If you don’t know your true value, don’t maintain your standards and don’t price yourself according to your expertise, then you will continue to attract clients who are not serious about their healing, don’t invest in their wellness and don’t value your expertise.

And I guarantee that if you’re not holding to the best standards in your business, it is spilling over into the rest of your life as well. For years, I gave away my business expertise while practicing as a Spiritual Messenger. For example, a client would book an appointment with me to connect with Spirit about a relationship issue and the conversation would eventually turn to their career. During the session, I would guide them to start a business in alignment with their Soul Mission. Most likely, I would

have told them how to monetize their mission as well.

Good for my clients - countless of them started and expanded successful businesses.

Not so good for me - as my giving free advice was killing my business. When I came to the realization that I was giving away my business expertise for free or even at heavily discounted "bargain" rates, I became totally disappointed with myself.

That's when I "saw the light"! The need for my expertise hadn't changed my clients still valued my knowledge and creativity and sought it out. So, something else (or someone) needed to change...and of course that was me. Why? Look at How Meaningful and Beautiful Life Is

W

e need to know that life is about more than impressing the neighbors and having more than the next guy. Who is your employer? Who are you working for? What are you working for and what do you hope to achieve in your lifetime?

How many parents, teachers and clergy really get you to look at those issues in a healthy, inspiring and meaningful way? As Joseph Campbell said, “You climb the ladder of success and when you get to the top it’s leaning against the wrong wall.”

The word for spirit and breath are the same in several languages. There is a message for us here. If we are to live we need to be inspired and find a sense of meaning in our work and service to the world. Information and material things are not the path to happiness. 95% of the time lottery winners tell you winning the lottery ruined their lives.

Find what inspires you and fills not only your lungs with life but your every activity. By doing so you become a co-creator and begin to realize that a perfect world would be meaningless and give you no choices or possibilities. Undertake the possible and even what seems to be the impossible. The inspired have nothing to fear.

As Maude says in the movie Harold and Maude, “Reach out, take a chance, get hurt even. Play as well as you can. Go team go. Give me an L. Give me an I. Give me a V. Give me an E. Live. Otherwise you’ve got nothing to talk about in the locker room.”

Having role models can help you behave like the person you want to become. What makes up three fourths of a lifeline? If you said FELINE you are right on target. And what is God spelled backwards? That’s easy, DOG. So now you know where I look for guidance. Animals are complete and can be excellent guides and models for us all. If none are available an infant can help temporarily but once children grow up they start acting like adults and are not good role models any longer. They just don’t see where the true wisdom is because of how they are parented in the majority of cases. Our home was always filled with animals and they were wonderful teachers to us all about love, reverence for life and how to live in the moment and be a survivor.

Why are you living this life? Did you ever stop to think about it? Or are you too busy complaining and whining to stop and ask questions? What action performed in your lifetime would make your life complete? And would allow you to die knowing you did what you came or were sent to do. I saw a cartoon which showed

two animals standing over the grave of another animal and on the headstone it said, Return To Sender. On my father-in-law’s headstone it says, He Just Fell Up. So what do all the religions and philosophies try to tell us about our job. I’ll save you some time. It’s this. The only thing of permanence is love. If you want to be immortal display love. Your body will perish but your love will not. So make use of your body and demonstrate your love.

Who do you help? When do you help? How do you help?

What would your answer be to that one? The answer is simple.

You help the person in front of you by doing what they need done, now. When you start living that way you get on the universe’s schedule and many things begin to happen that are to your benefit too as side effects of your actions. Remember everything in the universe is subject to change and everything is on schedule.

If I asked you to tell me what you would hang in every school lobby with this sign over it, “Look at How Meaningful and Beautiful Life Is.” What would your answer be? I once asked this of several thousand personal health trainers. All of them were beautiful men and women in excellent condition and yet their answers were rainbow, flower, baby picture. They felt like ugly ducklings despite their beauty. They had no one to reflect their beauty back at them.

Those enlightened by loss or illness or loving parents answer, “A Mirror.”
