Articles on wide-ranging topics will feature writings from nationally known practitioners, pieces from local experts in integrative medicine and stories by writers who have dug up infinite nuggets of wisdom to share with all of us.

Our mission and intent is to support each reader’s wish to make a difference in their lives. Together, we can make a difference in the local communities. ranklin D. Roosevelt said, “The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.” The inverse is also true: the community that supports its soil, thrives. Natural Nutmeg contributor Harvest New England (http://www.harvestpower.com/ne), would like to highlight some local and national initiatives that use soil as a gateway for good community growth.

Annie Fisher Montessori: The six-and-a-half acre campus at Annie Fisher Montessori (http://www.anniefishermontessori.org/index. php/about/campus) in the northwest part of Hartford provides fertile ground for students, and the program keeps growing.

Auer Farm: The Auer Farm (http://www.auerfarm.org/) has a 4-H Education Center that connects people, agriculture, and the environment through education and recreation. Our relationship with their team goes back 18+ years. This year we also supplied the Hartford Courthouse with compost: the inmates built garden beds and donated the grown food to shelters.

Growing Great Schools: The Growing Great Schools (http://www. growinggreatschools.org/) program in West Hartford provides cooking classes for ages 5-11 that connect food, heath and the environment. We have delivered soil to them for the last 10+ years, before they were even a non-profit.

Herbs of Vision: A self-described “start-up social enterprise” called Herbs of Vision (http://herbsofvision.com/) is basically the last option for at-risk kids. This year they added outdoor gardens to grow vegetables. The students are responsible for all the planning, layout, and all the hard work that goes in to creating gardens. We offered manpower, resources and compost to help them expand the gardens.

New Britain Roots: New Britain Roots (http://www.newbritainroots.org/) makes healthy food accessible and affordable to low-income neighbors. We have donated soil for about four years, watching them grow and have an even greater impact in the community through partnerships with Connecticut farmers, food artisans and healthy food advocates.

Healing Therapies for Cancer Without Even Leaving Your Home

any patients are benefiting from the healing effects of Reiki as they seek treatment in hospitals, clinics, and health and wellness centers. Writing a New Script

A

lot of us are on healing journeys. We are seekers striving for better health, life and wellness. It can sometimes take a lot of courage to step out of the known, the familiar, and what feels safe. It’s not always easy experiencing new ways of being, but although it may be scary, there is so much reward.

Changing our beliefs and perceptions about ourselves and the world around us can be an ongoing task. Working through layers upon layers of programming, the internal script that our mind replays over and over again can drive us nuts; yet all the while keeping us hostage in who we are, rather than helping us to become who we want to be. When changing attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions, it’s not always as simple as “just think positively” “or just believe in you.” Right? Sometimes these statements can feel like empty words because we haven’t experienced the reality they try to convey.

When we try to shift, change, and heal, we have to work through not only the physical aspects of ourselves, but also the emotional, mental, and energetic components. Our beliefs and habits tend to run core deep, and their influences can be stored down to the cellular level, an energetic form of muscle memory. We may try to shift and change, but doing it on our own isn’t always the most effective or beneficial way. Our own work with the healing system of Integrated Energy Therapy or IET® has been a major tool, for not only supporting our clients heal, but also our own growth and evolution.

Spicing Up Your Plate with Healthy Benefits

Whether you dine in West Hartford, New Haven or New Canaan, International Chef Prasad Chirnomula of Five Star Restaurant Group, (Thali, Thali Too, Oaxaca, INDIA New Canaan) dishes up a whole new meaning to savoring great, healthy Indian food locally across the Nutmeg state at his restaurant locations. INDIA, his newest restaurant which opened in December 2016 in West Hartford Center, boasts a menu with exclusive recipes delivering health benefits while complementing its exceptional fare. Guests can experience locally sourced, Farm to Table dishes with British Colonial overtones.

A master of his craft and a culinary artist, Chef Prasad is pioneering a new approach to healthy eating when indulging in Indian delectable dishes. “By integrating Indian spices and herbs such as Turmeric, Cardamom, Garlic, Ginger and Fenugreek into our dishes, we bring a whole series of health benefits to our dining guests,” says Chef Prasad. “From respiratory disorders, to joint inflammation to relieving the common cold, many of our dishes have ingredients that help combat a variety of ailments that people experience every day.”

Take Chef Prasad’s Shrimp Moilee recipe, for example. Several ingredients provide a host of benefits. Tamarind, another ingredient included in this popular dish, is said to help treat rheumatism, fevers, sore throat, sunstroke and other conditions. “It’s a ‘win-win’ with these dishes,” says Chef Prasad. “The unique flavors combined with the health benefits puts INDIA and my other restaurants into a category of their own.”

Other signature dishes on INDIA’s menu include the Chicken Tikka Masala, Vindaloo, Lamb Chops and their crispy baby kale (which also delivers a whole group of health benefits!) chaat drizzled with tamarind and date chutneys.

What other herbs and spices that are commonly used in Indian dishes are good for your health? Cinnamon, giving Indian dishes a refreshing taste and an aromatic smell, is said to be diabetes-friendly and insulin resistant. Cumin, which completes most Indian dishes, is said to alleviate digestion problems and causes of the common cold. Saffron, which adds color and spice to desserts and biryani, is said to have the ability to treat depression, improve memory, prevent the loss of vision and also serve as an anti-oxidant. Cloves are known to treat tooth problems and aid digestion.

Is Your Soul Calling for Adventure?

ince the dawn of humanity, it seems we have had an intrinsic desire to explore that transcends necessity and survival. We, at our core, long to see what lies beyond the next mountain range or seek a new route to travel. Whatever the reason it’s clear that humans have been on the move since we came into existence. History is rich with the accounts of famous explorers and pioneers who dedicated their entire lives to traversing new landscapes. While many of us know the familiar pull that wanderlust can have on one’s soul, some seem perfectly content staying close to home. I believe however that the vast majority of us have a deep desire to travel and don’t even know it.

Here are a few signs that your soul is calling for adventure and it’s time to answer.

• You are mindlessly scrolling through social media, see your friend on an amazing vacation and feel a pang of jealousy.

• You are burnt out. No matter how much sleep or relaxation time you get, nothing seems to help.

• You feel ‘stuck’ or ‘antsy’ like there is something you should be doing but can’t put your finger on what.

• You think, talk and daydream about far off lands and incredible destinations.

• Some of your fondest memories have been while traveling.

• You feel like your life is on ‘repeat’ and the routine feels stifling.

Now that you have heard your Soul’s call let’s find out what type of adventure YOU need. So often we get swept up in someone else’s travel plans for us. A destination wedding, a trip to Disney for the kids, a cruise your mother-in-law paid for; which can all be great but may not be what you are craving. I understand there are certain logistical constraints like time and money to consider but anyone can have a grand adventure whether you have $50 and 1 day off or $5,000 and 3 weeks to relax.

Here is an exercise to help quiet your mind and find out exactly what YOUR SOUL is seeking.

Find a comfortable quite place to relax, turn off electronic distractions and place your feet firmly on the floor. Take a few deep breaths and focus on the rhythm of your inhale and exhale. It may take a while to quiet your mind but when you feel ready ask yourself these questions.

• Does my body need rest and relaxation or movement and to be challenged?

• Am I longing for tranquility and introspection or to be surrounded by people?

• Do I crave the security of somewhere familiar or the rush of somewhere new?

• Do I feel drawn to be near still water, rushing water or the sea?

• Is the crisp, clean air of the mountains calling to me or do I want the heat and steam of the tropics?

• Do I want to see the beauty of forest or the arid landscape of the desert?

You can continue asking yourself these types of exploratory questions as long as you need. Once you are confident on what type of adventure to take, it’s time to consider that pesky ‘budget’ and ‘time’ constraint many of us have. It’s ok to save up or request time off in advance, but for some these aren’t options so simply work with what you have. If you can only afford a day trip or only have time for a weekend getaway, then do that. Your soul doesn’t care or understand dollars or days, the important part is honoring yourself and your soul's need for adventure.

rowing up a few minutes down the road from Rosedale Farms in Simsbury, I have long awaited the opportunity to attend a Max Chef to Farm dinner under a tent amongst the vines on this gorgeous farm and vineyard. It couldn’t have been better that the dinner we were invited to was Maize: Tapas & Corn, as I pretty much live for summer and Rosedale Farms Super Sweet corn! The evening began fabulously with a cocktail reception featuring the Del Huerto cocktail made with Reposado tequila, agave and lime and grilled corn with an Ancho Chili salt rim – who knew corn would make a great ingredient for a cocktail! Local cheeses from Arethusa, Rosedale veggies and passed hors d'oeuvres got us off to a great start.

We continued the amazing night with 4 more courses and dessert, enjoying the following: Corn & Shiitake Mushroom Cakes; Deconstructed Corn & Crab Chowder which was rich and delicious; Corn Crusted Local Fluke with Grilled Corn Salsa and Roasted Pepper; Grilled Heritage Pork with Sweet Corn Succotash which was cooked to perfection; and Corn and Blueberry Crisp with Chantilly Cream – a perfect ending.

Overall, a delicious and intimate dining experience! My only disappointment was the weather as it was cool and drizzly. However, it truly showed the professionalism and expertise of the Max team to be able to throw a fantastic event, when the rain could have really put a damper on it.

Your evening begins with a cocktail, wine or beer tasting reception (depending on the theme); then you’ll head out for a tour of the farm to see the fields and learn about the farm’s history, operations and products. Soil as a Gateway for Eliminating Toxins

N

atural treatments for illness typically revolve around eliminating “the bad” (e.g. toxins) and boosting or amplifying “the good” (e.g. wellness). Similarly, natural treatments for landscapes, such as compost, can help simultaneously eliminate the bad and boost or amplify the good. The following examples illustrate the potential positive impacts of compost.

Compost Can Help Eliminate the Bad Directly, compost can help filter out pollutants. In a process known as bioremediation, microorganisms capture or break down contaminants in water or soil. Did you know that in one teaspoon of living soil there are 100 million to 1 billion bacteria? These bacteria act like an enormous, microscopic, hungry army that metabolizes surrounding materials. Indeed, the active bacteria in compost have been shown to effectively transform many types of contaminants – including chlorinated and non-chlorinated hydrocarbons, wood-preserving chemicals, solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum products, and even explosives! – into humus (pronounced HU-mus, a bit different from the garbonzo-based dip known as hummus) and inert byproducts.

Indirectly, compost also supports plants that perform bioremediation services. For example, bracken ferns are able to grow in even the most polluted soils, and draw heavy metals out of the earth and into their tissues. Violets (Rinorea Niccolifera) are another example of a toxic-sucking plant: they consume nickel.

Compost, applied as a soil amendment, can help these plants grow and persevere.

Compost Can Help Boost the Good Almost every introduction to compost mentions that it improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. I like to provide comparable descriptions of a human’s lifestyle in order to illustrate how compost helps soil and the plants in that soil thrive.

Physical Properties: Similar to if you regularly stretched, lifted weights, and raised your heartbeat through cardiovascular exercise, compost helps improve soil structure. It has magical-like shape-shifting properties that adapt to meet the needs of the host soil. For example, if your soil is sandy, compost will add organic matter and increase its moisture retention. Alternatively, if your soil has high clay content, compost will increase its percolation and ability to drain. Quality soils allow water to drain through, retain moisture, and promote strong root growth, plant growth, and harvestable crops. Soil is the stage where life happens every day – every plant and animal is an actor.

Chemical Properties: Similar to if you ate a healthy diet, compost increases the ability of roots to uptake nutrients. It replenishes and stores organic nutrients. Almost more importantly, compost also makes nutrients available to roots and plants. It is truly the first and best form of slow-release fertilizer. In a curious twist of nature, some minerals, such as phosphorus, cannot be absorbed in their raw form by roots. That’s where compost fits in: the millions of microbes in compost uptake the phosphorus, and then poop out tiny excrement (which is really food for some other life form).

Roots of plants can absorb the excrement of those phosphorus and other nutrient-consuming microbes. Plant roots respond by producing “exudates” that feed the microbes. It’s a win-win. The same story unfolds for nitrogen, potassium, and all the micronutrients needed for healthy soil and plants. In sum, you need both the nutrients and the microbial activity for proper absorption.

Biological Properties: Similar to if you surrounded yourself with a robust community of diverse individuals that supported your growth, compost is like a mini ecosystem party. The billions of microorganisms in each teaspoon of compost mentioned earlier in this article help regulate the soil, suppress disease, and discourage pests. It’s a small, wild world teeming with life, and compost helps the good guys keep playing all season long. One scientist found the soil in a corn field had seven trophic levels where one organism was consumed by a slightly larger one at seven levels. Think of the primal forest or savannah on the head of a pin (or a single crumb of soil).

While compost is a natural and gentle additive to your garden and can be used regularly to enrich your soil, I feel the need to pause for a moment here and note that there can be too much of a good thing, even with compost. The mineral content can be too high and the drainage and air exchange might be low. You don’t want to plant directly into com-

post. Soil is a planting medium; compost is a soil amendment. For most plants a mixture of 80% soil and 20% compost works well.

The results of applying compost are simple: compost helps create healthy soil, which helps spur healthy roots, which helps grow healthy plants! At the same time the benefits of compost are quite complex and nearly endless. Key highlights of compost application include that it: • Adds organic material and nutrients to soil • Enhances the water holding capacity of soil • Increases the biological activity in soil • Reduces erosion and water run-off • Loosens clay soils for better root development • Retains moisture in sandy soils so plants need less water • Reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides Now that you are inspired to splice compost into your natural life to either eliminate bad or boost good, try the following tips: For gardens, apply a 1 inch – 3 inch layer of compost and mix into the top several inches of your existing soil.

For lawns, spread a thin layer of finely screened compost, up to a depth of 1/4-1/2 inches, just covering the surface.

The fall is a wonderful time to apply compost because it has the winter season to settle down into the soil during rainy and snowy months. Come spring, your landscape’s roots will be ready to grow. Now get out there and give your garden a natural boost.

Breaking Bad

M

oving from summertime to the fall season brings with it more routine as we let go of longer days, eating outdoors, beach vacations and summer foods. Even when we are no longer of the age that we are, “going back to school” we still feel the pull of the colder weather bringing us back to our routines. The relaxed feeling of summer can also lead to letting go of our normal schedules and attention to healthier habits. Fall is a great time to make changes to let go of the things that don’t serve us, a.k.a. bad habits.

The first step is to be honest with yourself about what you know, deep inside, are in fact bad habits. Most of us have 1, 2 or maybe even a few habits that get in our way. I like to start by choosing the one that seems the most accessible or easiest to change. Once we make that choice, here are steps to follow as you make that journey; to encourage you to be bold and make those changes.

Why? Creating lasting change needs to be connected to a strong incentive or reason to make change. That leads us to looking at the importance of being clear about your WHY. I sometimes have clients who want advice about ways to help their sibling, partner or friend get healthier. The truth is, that never works. Any change needs to be your idea, not the prodding of someone else. Take time to be very clear why you want to make that change. Sit with it and be sure it’s your voice driving the change and that you feel connected to the outcome or the difference the change will make.

Sometimes our health is a factor or maybe our finances but it’s important to take the time to know WHY.

What can Natural Medicine do for Cancer Treatment?

ancer treatment is one of the most heavily researched fields in medicine. Scientists and researchers are constantly seeking better and novel treatments. Daily studies are being published showing new benefits to integrative therapies as well as more effective conventional treatments. At the same time, many diets, supplements and therapies boast unsubstantiated claims. It is a very confusing landscape for patients and their families. As a naturopathic physician, my role in oncology is to help navigate this terrain with patients, helping them find complementary therapies to help their treatment with their oncologist and keep them feeling empowered, in both body and spirit.

Whether it’s the people who have lived their whole life mindful of their heath or people who never really had to consider their body and self-care until a diagnosis, cancer and its treatment can be an overwhelming paradigm shift. For the first time for many people, surgeries and treatments are being done to them, instead of them doing things for themselves. This concept is described as a locus of control, which is the perceived control of one’s life.

The driving force in treatment or in a patient’s life often becomes more aggressive treatments; surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

The beauty of involving integrative therapy in cancer care, such as naturopathic medicine, is it continues to help keep the loci of control with the patient. Empowering patients with nutrition, lifestyle, meditation and other nurturing modalities ensures they maintain their power through the process of treating cancer. Why is this important? Having a strong internal locus of control for health has been associated with better outcomes in a myriad of health conditions, including cancer, and also associated with better selfmanagement and quality of life after initial treatment.

Goals of Integrative Treatment It is important to set expectations of what natural medicine can do for cancer treatment. Often people want to avoid conventional treatment and only do natural treatments. While it’s completely understandable and appealing to only help the body help itself naturally; the benefits and outcomes of conventional treatment need to be appreciated. When cells have gotten to the stage that they are defying the immune system and natural mechanisms of self control are lost, more aggressive treatments can quickly help address these cell changes. That being said, utilizing natural supplements and dietary strategies can dramatically improve outcomes.

Optimize Conventional Treatment and Reduce Side Effects Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the most studied and have the best documented results when it comes to cancer treatment. However, they are not without harsh side effects, long-term 20

risks and major concerns for many patients. Naturopathic physicians do not administer these more aggressive treatments, but often advocate for them because of their effectiveness. Using natural supports such as acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, massage, nutrition, vitamins and herbs, the treatments can be more effective at killing cancer cells and with less side effects which often halt treatment.

Reducing side effects not only makes treatment more comfortable, but often prevents lasting damage and allows the patient to get on the other side of treatment without delay. Also, cancer cells unfortunately have mechanisms to thwart treatment, but research shows in some cases supplements can downregulate cancer’s defense mechanisms and make the medication more effective. More and more herbal preparations and nutritional supplements are being studied in conjunction with chemotherapy treatments. Offsetting side effects and protecting healthy cells has to be carefully done to not offset the strength and benefit of chemotherapy or radiation. Because there are so many interactions with medications, it is extremely important to discuss all of this with a physician familiar with oncology as well as vitamins and herbs. One study found that up to 75% of people on supplements had interactions with their cancer treatment.

Strengthen The Body: Before, During and After Treatment One of the best tenants of naturopathic medicine is Vis Medicatrix Naturae or the healing power of nature. The body has the ability to heal itself and be strong. Preparing for surgery can involve reducing inflammation and strengthening tissues and muscles. During treatment, supporting the immune system and the digestive tract can help continue assimilating nutrients and protecting healthy cells. Once in remission, often patients want to detoxify. Detoxification is a process the body does daily, but when looking to “detox” after treatment, it should be about nourishing and nurturing those natural processes in the body. Detox should be about healing the mechanisms of clearing toxins from the body, not purging the body or depriving the body in any way.

Naturopathic and integrative medicine plays an important role in oncology, and it is being recognized more and more by conventional medicine. Because of that, more research and interest in natural supplements and medical diets is evolving. Nutrition and novel applications of nutrients like IV Vitamin C are two treatments on the forefront that we are going to explore.

Updates in Nutrition Nutrition can be one of the most powerful tools for a patient with cancer. At the same time, nutrition before and after treatment, should be discussed with a physician or nutritionist. Medical diets can vary according to the type of cancer, body composition of the

patient and the type of treatment they will be encountering. For example, some cancers are fed by estrogenic foods, and therefore many physicians will have patients avoid things containing soy and plant based estrogens. With other cancers, soy can be very protective!

Cancer cells are highly metabolic and fast growing, and therefore demand a lot of calories. Many people may find they are losing weight easily. Also, some of the medications, including chemotherapy drugs, can affect the GI tract and compromise appetite. Weight loss and weakness also known as cachexia can be a big risk for patients. It can compromise the body’s ability to heal or withstand treatment. Studies have shown that a well-nourished patient has a better treatment response and less side effects from chemotherapy. More than any other dietary plan or objective, nourishing and nurturing the body should be the primary goal. With that consideration in mind, there is a lot of interesting research coming out showing food truly helps the body help itself and enhances treatment.

Two of the most interesting areas of research regarding nutritional approaches to oncology involve cancer cell metabolism and glucose. Sugars and glucose play a key role in cancer cell metabolism because they need so much fuel. Specific medical diets offer insights on how to downregulate cancer by decreasing cancer’s fuel source.

Ketogenic Diet First introduced to popular culture as the “Atkin’s diet”, a ketogenic diet offers many potential health benefits from weight loss to neurological benefits to cancer protection.

The diet is essentially high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate. By eating this way, the body switches to a different fuel source than glucose, making ketone bodies.

Cancer cells produce energy at a high rate through glycolysis. Molecular models have been found to show that high levels of glucose are associated with cancer growth while depriving cancer cells of glucose leads to cell death. Tumor cells lack the metabolic flexibility of healthy cells and are therefore fundamentally dependent on glucose for fuel. The ketogenic diet provides a promising therapeutic avenue to improve outcomes by selectively enhancing healthy cell function and obstructing cancer cell growth.

Additional animal studies have shown that ketogenic diets reduce tumor growth and improve survival in malignant glioma, colon cancer, gastric cancer, and prostate cancer.

Although more research is needed regarding the full mechanism by which the ketogenic diet provides anticancer effects, results of studies to date have demonstrated the safety and prospective efficacy of consuming a ketogenic diet in combination with radio-chemo-therapy to improve responses in various cancer models.

have a positive effect on our cells. By not eating for a certain interval, healthy cells slow their metabolism and enter a repair and “hibernation” mode until fed again.

This decreases the risk of any toxic effects that can come with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Research has found that starvation-dependent stress by means of a fasting-based intervention is capable of differentially protecting normal versus cancer cells against high-dose chemotherapy in cell culture.

A more recent study found that fasting could slow the growth of tumor cells to

improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

There is even evidence that fasting after chemotherapy can help to reduce the risk of DNA damage from the treatment itself.

Therefore, cancer cells might become more sensitive to chemotherapy treatment while engaging in intervals of fasting. In a few small-scale case studies, fasting was welltolerated and associated with a self-reported reduction in multiple chemotherapyinduced side effects. Due to these findings, researchers have concluded that fasting cycles in combination with chemotherapy could extend the survival of cancer patients by both retarding tumor progression and reducing adverse effects.

Updates in IV Nutrients Intravenous (IV) Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has been gaining popularity in the oncology world. Vitamin C for cancer care was first documented by Ewan Cameron and Allan Campbell in the 1970s. Their work got the attention of Nobel Prize winning Linus Pauling who further expanded the use and popularity of vitamin C in cancer care. Initial studies were on oral doses of vitamin C, however, blood concentrations achieved were less than 300 µM, not enough to be considered a pharmacologic dose, compared to blood concentrations upwards of 20 mM achieved via IV administration. Additionally, due to bowel tolerance (diarrhea) side effects of oral vitamin C dosing, intravenous vitamin C is a preferred route. Several studies have shown that when plasma concentrations of ascorbic acid are at pharmacological dose (0.1-100 mM) cell division decreases in a variety of cancer cells, specifically, in prostate, pancreatic, liver, colon, certain lung cancers and nervous system cancers.

Studies show combination of Vitamin C with other antioxidants like N-Acetylcysteine, improve the antitumor effect by reducing VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor, a polypeptide that increases the development of new blood vessels to areas of rapidly dividing cells. A trial evaluating the combination of IV vitamin C and chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel included twenty seven women with advanced stage ovarian cancer. (Stage 3 and 4). The patients were randomly divided into two groups, one to receive chemotherapy alone and the other chemotherapy with IV vitamin C. Chemotherapy was given for 6 months at same intervals for both groups. IV vitamin C was given for a total of 12 months. Results revealed a reduction in toxic side effects in the patients who additionally received IV Vitamin C. IV vitamin C was shown to improve quality of life during chemo and or radiation therapy in breast cancer patients. IV vitamin C used as solo therapy in terminal cancer improved quality of life and reduced cancer-related side effects.

IV vitamin C is a very tolerated treatment with limited side effects. Research has shown vitamin C can be safely used in pharmacological doses in individuals with normal kidney function. Those with kidney disease or compromise or who have the inherited disorder known as G6PD deficiency would not be candidates for IV vitamin C therapy due to risk of toxicity. Vitamin C can increase the absorption of iron and

would not be recommended for those with iron storage disorders like hemochromatosis.

Humans along with guinea pigs and fruit bats are the only primates that do not synthesize their own vitamin C, meaning it must be obtained through the diet or supplement, making it very well tolerated.

It should be noted that not all studies reveal benefit with the use of IV vitamin C and chemotherapy. Research is being done to determine the types of cancers and chemotherapeutic agents that work best with IV vitamin C. Oral vitamin C dosing can impart health benefits including improved iron absorption and immune support, however, doses achieved orally are only physiological, not pharmaceutical level. The studies referred to above are looking at pharmaceutical dosing of vitamin C only achieved via IV administration. The National Cancer Institute in addition to many other research groups support ongoing trials for integrative and complimentary therapies including IV vitamin C and are enrolling patients on a continual basis. Natural Medicine for Effective Pain Relief

ain is by far the most common medical condition people experience and the #1 reason for doctor visits. Pain can impact people in so many ways, be long lasting, and make people desperate. But there is hope for relief from pain.

In the United States, we have created opioid and pain epidemics because of our failure to treat pain without using addictive drugs. Recently this has begun to change. Standard guidelines for various pain conditions around the world have begun shifting toward an integrative medical approach. Within these guidelines, conventional strategies (drugs, surgeries) are combined with natural or complementary and integrative approaches as well as therapies to improve mental-emotional and social health. Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain Relief Let's focus on the basics of chronic musculoskeletal pain relief. Chronic musculoskeletal pain means that a muscle, bone and/or joint has been hurting you for over 3 months. If you have chronic musculoskeletal pain, it's best to keep active even when it’s difficult.

Exercise is essential to pain relief.

Start by gently stretching and massaging tight muscles.

Proven treatments for mental health and pain include cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, mindfulness (including MBSR), meditation, yoga, tai chi/qi gong, hypnosis, progressive relaxation, spirituality/religion, transcranial electric or magnetic nerve stimulation, being in nature, journaling, music, self-help books, Emotional Freedom Technique and other relaxation techniques. If you have a mental health disorder or are unsure, seek mental health care by a licensed psychologist and/or psychiatrist. If mental health is problematic, combining psychotherapy with medications, exercise and other options above is most successful.

Optimal nutrition is crucial for pain relief.

The top nutritional strategies for pain include lectin avoidance, anti-inflammatory, and Mediterranean diets. Make an effort to lose weight if you’re overweight, particularly if you have osteoarthritis. Some herbal therapies and nutritional supplements can be considered but should be used with naturopathic or medical supervision due to potential drug interaction risks.

Assessment and optimization of vitamin/ mineral (B12, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin D, etc.) and omega-3 levels can help. Consider one month+ trials of ginger, turmeric and/or tart cherry capsules, glucosamine sulfate and/or chondroitin sulfate, egg shell membrane, alpha lipoic acid (for nerve pain), homeopathic remedies (e.g., Ruta, Rhus tox, Hypericum, Ledum, Bryonia), and other naturopathic methods.

You need sleep to help relieve pain.

Learn the basics of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and seek professional treatment if you think it might help you. CBT has been found very effective

for insomnia. Exercising during the day (nothing strenuous at night), relaxation and meditation techniques, avoiding negative thoughts regarding sleep, avoiding caffeine after morning hours, increasing sunlight/ nature exposure during day and decreasing light/electronic exposure after sunset help re-establish regular sleep rhythms including melatonin production. If you have difficulty falling asleep or are a shift worker 3-5mg of melatonin (taken 1 hour before desired sleep nightly, as it has additive effects) is a low-risk and proven treatment option. If you awaken in the night, drinking Vervain/ Verbena tea or 10-25 drops of the tincture around bedtime (and smaller doses if you awake) is also helpful for most. Valerian (for non-sanguine types), chamomile, hops, glycine, and l-tryptophan can also be tried.

Living on Purpose

re you living in your purpose? Not your career or job, but your purpose. As a physician, I strongly believe that the path to purpose leads to good health and life fulfillment.

This is a topic that is seldom discussed from a medical perspective, but one of extreme importance.

Think about what you loved to do as a child. Does that reflect what you do now as an adult? When I was little, I would patch up my friends’ “boo-boos”, spent hours sewing clothes for my dolls and styling their hair. As an adult, I am a physician who loves fashion and styling hair. Not much has changed. My road to naturopathic medicine was very circuitous, but I always knew I wanted to help people through disease prevention, so I held on to that. I do not claim to have all the answers, but I do know that I was given the gift of healing. I enjoy what I do; I am living my dream by providing holistic medical treatments to my patients. There is nothing better than empowering people to take ownership of their health. One of my favorite questions to ask when getting to know someone is, “What is your passion?” The answer tells me a lot about that person; it tells me what he/she was put on this earth to do.

Engagement When engaging in an enjoyable activity, a flow is created that often results in keeping us in the present moment. For some people this activity may be a hobby, participating in a sport, or an artistic endeavor. If you do not have an activity that keeps you engaged, find one! It appears that a sense of purpose leads to a longer life. The great thing is it is never too late to find your purpose and add some years to your life!

Accomplishment Perhaps the most gratifying part of goal setting is goal accomplishment. Dr. Seligman points out that accomplishment is more closely linked to our ability to be ambitious and having an achievement-oriented mindset. Friend or Foe? What You Need to Know

Is estrogen my friend or my foe? And what can I do to balance my hormones so that estrogen remains my friend for life?

What is Estrogen?

Estrogen is a sex steroid hormone derived from cholesterol, as all steroid molecules are. Estrogen is responsible for the growth and development of female sexual characteristics and reproduction, as well as supporting bone, brain, cardiovascular, skin, bladder, and vaginal health, among so many other important processes in the body. So, we need estrogen!

When we speak about estrogen we are often primarily referring to a form of estrogen called estradiol, which is the predominant estrogen produced by the ovaries prior to the time a woman experiences menopause. There are two other forms of estrogen: estrone, which is predominant after menopause; and estriol which is a much less potent hormone than estradiol, and present in higher levels during pregnancy.

Estrogens act differently in various areas of the body by either stimulating or inhibiting activity in those areas. This depends on what type of receptor is present in that tissue. There are two types of receptors: alpha and beta receptors. Alpha-receptor rich tissue is found in the breast, endometrium (lining of the uterus), and ovary, and generally when stimulated will promote cell-division and growth. Overstimulation can eventually lead to cancer. Betareceptor rich tissue is found in the brain, bone, endothelium (blood vessels), intestinal mucosa, and prostate.

Understanding this concept of different estrogen receptors enables us to understand that the effects of estrogen throughout the body are varied, and we cannot uniformly say that estrogen is bad or good. What we can say is that excess estrogen out of balance can cause significant health issues such as: • Heavy and painful periods • PMS • Infertility • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) • Fibroids • Endometriosis • Bone loss • Cognitive issues • Cardiovascular disease • Hormonally-related cancers such as breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer.

What Causes Excess Estrogen Imbalance in the Body?

Basically, excess estrogen imbalance (also described as “estrogen dominance” relative to levels of progesterone) arises from four causes: • Increased exposure to the body • Increased production by the body • Decreased balancing effects from progesterone within the body • Decreased elimination from the body Let’s look at each of these more closely, and understand that each is dependent on the others to create imbalance or balance. In other words, imbalance is created from multiple causes and conditions.

Increased Exposure of Estrogen The most obvious source of increased exposure is taking synthetic estrogen or bioidentical estrogen in the form of oral contraceptive pills or hormone replacement. Although taking synthetic hormone (estrogens and progestins) can provide a convenient form of birth control and some symptomatic relief from issues such as heavy, painful periods and hot flashes, they also have significant negative effects for many women. These negative effects of synthetic estrogen intake can include: • Increased risk for depression and mood changes • Depletion of vitamins and minerals (specifically vitamins B2, B6, B12, C, and E, as well as magnesium, selenium, and zinc) • Increased risk of developing blood clots • Metabolic changes including weight gain, insulin resistance, and adverse changes in cholesterol and triglyceride levels Another common source is the food which we eat, primarily conventional meat and dairy. Since the 1950’s, the FDA has approved the use of natural and synthetic estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and growth hormone to allow for faster weight gain and production of meat and dairy.

We also have exposure to excessive amounts of xenoestrogens, toxins which have estrogenic effects in the body. These xenoestrogens are endocrine (hormone) disrupting chemicals (EDC’s), which often bind more strongly to the estrogen receptor than estrogen itself leading to overstimulation of the receptor or blocking of the normal signaling by that hormone. EDC’s can also interfere with the detoxification and elimination of hormones by the liver. Some common EDC’s which have estrogenic effects are:

• Bisphenol A (BPA) found in can liners, receipt paper, and plastics • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE’s) found in flame retardants and house dust • Dioxins formed as an unintentional byproduct of many industrial processes involving chlorine such as waste incineration, chemical and pesticide manufacturing and pulp and paper bleaching • Perfluorinated chemicals (PFC’s) found in nonstick cookware and water-resistant coatings • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) found in coolants and lubricants • Diethylstilbestrol (DES) given to pregnant women from 1941 to 1971 to prevent pregnancy complications and pregnancy loss, now known to cause increased risk for gynecologic problems including vaginal cancer in the daughters of women exposed to DES in utero. (DES exposure can also cause significant medical problems in “DES sons” as well.)

Increased Production of Estrogen Estrogen (specifically estradiol) is made from testosterone in the body via an enzyme called aromatase. The activity of aromatase is stimulated by: • High levels of inflammation • Excess body fat

Decreased Balancing Effects from Progesterone Progesterone is another sex steroid which balances the effects of estrogen in the body. Progesterone levels rise in the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation to decrease estrogen levels and stabilize the lining of the uterus to prevent irregular or excessive bleeding. If pregnancy occurs during that cycle, progesterone rises dramatically to support the growth of the fetus. Progesterone is primarily produced by the ovary, in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands, and in large amounts by the placenta during pregnancy.

It has multiple physiologic effects including decreasing estrogen receptor activity and blocking the production of estrogen at the DNA level. Thus, conditions that decrease progesterone relative to estrogen or block the activity of progesterone at its cellular receptor can contribute to estrogen imbalance.

These include: • Inflammation • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) • Excess cortisol levels (from excess stress) • Decrease in ovulatory cycles in the years approaching menopause (i.e., “perimenopause” which on average occurs at age 46) • Hypothyroidism • Inappropriately elevated levels of the hormone prolactin, responsible for breast milk production after childbirth

Decreased Elimination of Estrogen and Xenoestrogens Detoxification and elimination of hormone and toxins occurs primarily in the liver and in the gut, through a process called biotransformation. Biotransformation is the conversion of toxic substances into non-toxic substances by making them water-soluble to be excreted in stool and urine. The capacity of the body to detoxify is dependent on many different enzymes, nutrient cofactors needed for function of those enzymes, and healthy gut bacteria.

In the liver, the transformation of estrogens has 2 phases: Phase One detoxification involves three primary “highways” down which estrogen can travel. The most favorable route converts estrogen to a metabolite called 2-hydroxy estrone. The less favorable routes lead to products called 4- and 16hydroxyestrone. Higher 4-hydroxy estrone levels are associated with direct DNA damage and progression to cancer.

Phase Two detoxification involves a process called methylation, which essentially neutralizes the 2- and 4- hydroxy estrone products.

Thus, anything we can to do increase 2-OH estrone, decrease 4-OH estrone, and enhance balanced methylation will lead to proper estrogen balance. These estrogen metabolites can be measured in the urine.

• High insulin levels (insulin resistance) • Alcohol The aromatase enzyme is found in many tissues throughout the body: ovary, brain, fat, blood vessels, skin, and bone, as well as in tissue of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer. After menopause, most estrogen is produced in areas outside of the ovary, most notably in excess body fat. Drugs which block the activity of aromatase are used to treat breast cancer. Inappropriately increased aromatase activity leads to excess circulating estrogen in the body.

Free (active) estrogen levels in the body can also result from decreased levels of binding to a carrier protein in the blood called SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin). Decreased SHBG levels are associated with obesity, elevated insulin levels, steroid use, hypothyroidism, and elevated testosterone levels.

In the gut, there are 100 trillion bacteria which help to protect the body from infection and disease. When the gut “microbiota” become imbalanced, there can be increased production of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. Beta-glucuronidase allows estrogen which is marked for excretion through the stool to be recycled back into the body. Thus, elevated beta-glucuronidase levels can be associated with elevated estrogen levels, as less estrogen is eliminated from the body. Beta-glucuronidase levels can be evaluated with stool testing.

What can we do to encourage estrogen balance in our bodies?

So much! If we consider the multitude of causes and conditions for imbalance, we can then focus on the important aspects of creating and maintaining healthy estrogen levels.

These are the basic steps: • Eat a largely plant-based anti-inflammatory organic whole food diet to give your body the key nutrients and information it needs to function optimally.

• Eat cruciferous vegetables to stimulate the production of the favorable 2-OH estrone metabolite in the liver.

• Reduce toxin exposure as much as possible from processed foods, hormonally-treated meats and dairy products, unfiltered water, plastics, beauty and personal care products (look up the “Dirty Dozen Endocrine Disruptors” from the Environmental Working Group.)

• Maintain an ideal body weight to decrease excess body fat and insulin resistance.

• Optimize gut health with pre- and probiotic foods to support good gut bacterial balance.

• Avoid alcohol or moderate alcohol intake to two or less drinks/week.

• Consider natural progesterone supplementation or chaste tree extract (Vitex agnus castus) to enhance progesterone activity.

• Consider non hormonal forms of contraception such as an IUD, diaphragm, or Fertility Awareness Method (if you have very predictable regular menstrual cycles.)

An Endurance Athlete’s Secret Weapon to Post-Race Recovery

Many scheduled training sessions are scheduled over a course of weeks to months to prepare you and your body for the big event you set your mind to from the beginning. But what happens when the race is over? How do you assure that your body is going to recover properly?

Let’s begin with some do’s and don’t’s of the training process itself. As an athlete, “never give up” is a mentality that can be a double-edged sword. Knowing the signs of muscle fatigue during training are important. Muscle fatigue is derived from prolonged over training. Endurance athletes are the “energizer bunnies” of exercise; constantly putting in the hours and sweat to train for their desired event.

Here are some warning signs of over working your body during training.

• Muscle Weakness: If you feel your muscles are tired after performing workouts you have performed previously and now are having difficulty completing them unexpectedly.

• Leg Twitches: Muscle weakness can cause twitching in the muscles referred to as myoclonic jerks. These can be a sign that your body needs rest and some recovery time.

• Lack of Energy: Endurance athletes could feel the lack of energy or feel they are incapable of completing training runs that were previously completed. This is caused by improper blood flow to upper and lower extremities.

• Weakened Grip/Trembling: This could be an indication that you are exceeding your limit with training. Your muscles want to protect themselves from injury, which is why you feel like your body is “shutting down.”

During training always assure that you are not overtraining to risk the chances of getting an injury that could prevent you from success in your sport.

2. After each training run and cross-training session, the importance of foam rolling IT bands, hamstrings, calves and quadricep muscles is crucial to recovery. By performing this for 30 seconds on each muscle group and each leg, it will function as an active stretch for needed muscles as well as increasing blood flow to help alleviate any soreness that has accrued during your workout.

So, if you are properly training and complete your desired event, what now? How do you keep your body at optimal performance, or how do you improve performance? Most athletes consider these questions as after thoughts, but that can be detrimental to staying healthy for future race events.

Nutrition Nutrition is a large component to proper post-race recovery.

Many athletes can tend to veer off the path of healthy eating and consume too many calories that are not needed for recovery. It is important to continue a balanced diet with natural and nonprocessed foods to fuel your body correctly. Some post-race foods

Hypnosis for Successful Relapse Prevention

T

he addiction statistics in this country are STAGGERING and have gotten more so in recent years. It feels like we all know someone who is struggling, and sometimes that someone is ourselves.

These are intense times and they trigger a lot of our feelings of fear of being out of control so we look for something to numb those feelings. A few of us turn toward meditation, guided visualization, healthy exercise, positive action, compassion for self and others to feel better, but many are looking for the quick and easy fix to make their uncomfortable feelings go away.

Within the minds of all the folks trying to use drugs to cope is the phenomenon of connection. “This drug makes me feel good.” And yes, maybe for the first little while that’s the case, there is the numb or the high, but the mind forgets about the crash and the burn. It forgets about the destruction, and holds onto the misbelief that drugs feel good, that they are the fix to the uncomfortable feelings or the solution to life’s problems. Having worked with addicts of all kinds for the past decade, I can tell you for fact that not one of them ever thought they would become addicted. Not one of them was in touch with where that initial decision would lead. And to be honest, not one of them is any different than you and I. I’ve had people ask me why I want to work with, “that segment of the population,” as if someone addicted to substance is different or lesser than you and I. I can tell you that the many people I’ve worked with, with one exception, were and are wonderful and in most cases more caring and sensitive than the average. They were leading “normal” lives, if there were such a thing, until one seemingly innocent or ignorant attempt to cope brought them down.

Fortunately, there is help and in my biased opinion, which is thankfully supported by research, hypnosis works extremely well with relapse prevention. Research by Greg

Potter shows hypnosis treatment producing a 77% success rate for drug addiction.

Treatment was used with 18 clients over the last seven years and showed a 77% success rate for at least a one-year followup. Fifteen were seen for alcoholism or alcohol abuse, two clients were seen for cocaine addiction, and one client had a marijuana addiction.

Another study found that significantly more methadone addicts quit with hypnosis, and 94% remained narcotic-free.

Significant differences were found on all measures. The experimental group had significantly less discomfort and illicit drug use and a significantly greater amount of cessation. At six-month follow up, 94% of the subjects in the experimental group who had achieved cessation remained narcotic-free.

re you in pain? Have you been diagnosed with a chronic condition or disease? Would you like to avoid the potential side effects of over-thecounter and prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, prednisone, and cortisone? Learning about inflammation, and how to combat it through lifestyle modifications, is a key means of beginning your healing process.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is an acute or chronic response to damage caused to the body.

Many factors contribute to the complex course of inflammatory reactions, and the pain associated with it results from the overworking of the body’s normal defense system. However, not all inflammation is bad. Acute inflammation can be critical to keeping the body safe, such as when it arises in connection with healing cuts, burns, other physical traumas, infections, and allergies. However, according to Michael Murray, ND, chronic and systemic low-grade inflammation (or “silent inflammation”), is a “major factor in the development of virtually every major chronic degenerative disease, including cardiovas34

cular disease, allergies, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.” Silent inflammation is also a key element in overweight/obesity, osteo/rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, dermatitis (psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer), bowel disorders (IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), and psychological imbalances (depression, anxiety, ADHD).

The Conventional Approach While a wide variety of prescription and OTC drugs address the symptoms caused by inflammation, none actually prevent it, and they all have potential side effects, including: (1) Corticosteroids (Cortisone, Prednisone): can cause long-term pain, glaucoma, cataracts, hypertension, weight gain, increased risk of infections, and high blood sugar; and (2) NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, Celebrex): can cause kidney and liver failure, increased intestinal permeability and stomach ulcers, edema, prolonged bleeding, and serious cardiovascular risk (Celebrex).

When seeking a practitioner’s help with any inflammatory condition, request a blood test for C-reactive protein (CRP) (or a high-sensitivity CRP test, which yields results in 25 minutes), which indicates the amount of inflammation in the body but does not diagnose a specific disease. In certain cases, anti-inflammatory drugs may be indicated. Each patient should review his specific condition with his medical practitioner and weigh a recommended drug’s risks and benefits.

The Natural Approach Reducing or eliminating debilitating chronic inflammation often does not require anti-inflammatory medications.

Holistic practitioners generally maintain that a healthy diet strategy and certain dietary supplements (high quality and in the

right doses) can minimize inflammation, thereby easing pain and even preventing age-related and other diseases.

Anti-Inflammatory, Alkalizing Diet Preventing and reducing inflammation must begin with an anti-inflammatory, high-alkaline diet. A “healthy diet” in this context: (1) excludes saturated, hydrogenated, or trans fats (beef, pork, lamb, duck); (2) minimizes simple carbohydrates (foods with a high glycemic index that quickly convert to acid-forming sugar in the body: sweets; pasta; bread; potatoes; rice), cholesterol, and alcohol ; and (3) includes higher levels of monounsaturated fats (soaked nuts and seeds, olive oil), omega-3 fatty acids (especially from certain wild, cold-water fish) and as many high-fiber, organic, raw (unprocessed) foods as possible, such as low-sugar fruits (berries and apples), legumes (especially sprouted black and navy beans), and a large variety of dark green and cruciferous vegetables (kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower) (often referred to as the “Mediterranean Diet”).

The oversimplified acid-alkaline theory of disease, which maintains that excess acid accumulation in the body causes many diseases, aligns with the guidelines of an anti-inflammatory diet. Since it is also widely believed that acid-forming foods cause inflammation, the dietary goal is to consume more neutral and alkaline-producing foods. [Unfortunately, not all experts agree on the acid/alkaline categorization of a number of foods. Also, impact on the body can range from highly acidic (pH well below Neutral 7.0) to highly alkaline (pH well above Neutral 7.0, with varying levels of each in between.]

Keeping in mind that there is a difference between acidic and acid-forming foods (some acidic foods actually alkalize

the body), a chronic inflammation sufferer should monitor intake of commonly consumed acid-forming foods, including: soda; most nuts (walnuts, peanuts, pistachios, dried coconut); animal proteins (including eggs); most grains and flours (pasta, bread/crackers/ cake, rice); dairy (cheese, yogurt, cow’s milk, ice cream); condiments; most sugar-based sweeteners; processed/iodized salt; coffee; and most prescription drugs. On the other hand, healthy neutral or alkalizing foods include: most vegetables and fruits (not corn, tomatoes); herbs/green and herbal teas; apple cider/balsamic/wine vinegar; alkaline water (over pH 7); olive/sunflower oils and ghee; soy beans; whey protein; certain sweeteners (raw honey, brown rice syrup); sea/Himalayan salt; and certain nuts (almonds, chestnuts, pine nuts, fresh coconut).

Preventing “Leaky Gut Syndrome” Minimizing the permeability of the intestinal walls is also critical to managing chronic inflammation. Intestinal permeability is a condition in which undigested substances intended to remain in the intestines leak through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. These wayward particles cause system-wide inflammation and can create an immune response, which in turn can lead to food sensitivities/allergies, inflammatory bowel conditions, dermatitis, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and psychological disorders, among other ailments.

Detoxification/Internal Cleansing A toxin is any substance that negatively affects cell function or structure. By Robin Clare ear Robin: I am feeling so alone and scared these days. I go to work and then I sit home by myself staring at my phone or the TV. No one ever calls me and instead of picking up the phone and calling someone, I wonder, “What’s on Netflix?” Fixing my loneliness has come down to binge watching someone else’s life on TV. And most of the time, those shows make me more scared of what is happening in the world. Can you help me figure out why I feel such despair and what can I do about it?

Dear Lynn: You are not alone! As a matter of fact, many of my clients have expressed that same sentiment to me; “I am sitting home feeling lonely, no one ever calls me.” Is it possible that we are all sitting home feeling lonely, craving a deeper level of connection than what is possible through social media or watching TV? Perhaps you wonder: “Why can’t that person just call me? Why do I have to be the one who has to initiate contact again...?”

My Aunt Barbara is in her 80’s and has more friends than most people I know.

Because she’s seemingly so popular, I asked her, “Aunt Barb, of all the social plans you make all the time, what percentage of the time do you need to initiate the call?” She answered, “That’s easy – at least 90% of the time.” I responded, “Doesn’t that irritate you?” She replied, “I used to get annoyed until I came to realize that every time I make the call, the person on the other end of the phone is so glad to hear from me!

And I get to hear a friendly voice and we get to make a plan to be together. Everyone wins!”

Catch up with your family member or friend and commit to yourself that you won’t hang up without a date on the calendar to get together in person.

Now, onto the harder discussion of despair that comes from the binge watching of all that negativity on TV or in the movies.

You might think that it will make your life seem better by comparison...but it makes you feel worse. I was watching the Today Show and I heard a 10-minute dialogue by the hosts of one horrific story after the next.

I turned off the TV and wondered: “How can they talk about all this negativity in their job every day?“ We all have choices; we can watch the News, or watch violence on TV, or not.

We want to stay informed on current events – but how can we do that without feeling afraid?

I would suggest that it is important that you stay informed but then you must focus on what you desire to happen, not simply accept “what is”. This is even more important now that the “what is” of our nation is scary, therefore, focusing on what you wish to manifest - for yourself, for the country, for the world - is the best step in the right direction.

Your fear is well-justified, given that what’s happening in our nation has brought out into the light of day all its shadow aspects - to be understood, healed and transformed into a higher consciousness way of being. This is an extraordinary opportunity for you and all of us to envision for our nation exceptional positive outcomes and become part of the solution. The same possibilities are true for your individual situation as well!

Based on your note, Lynn, I would say that you are looking for a life filled with

friendship, laughter and having fun. The first step to achieving the life you want is to spend time with friends and family - or being of service to others. Why not volunteer for a cause that supports positive outcomes?

Then, the next step during your personal or “me” time is watch more light-hearted shows or documentaries on the beauty of the natural world, or those about how we are healing our world.

When my son was little, he said, “Mommy, why don’t they have a Good News channel?” Out of the mouths of babes...yes, why don’t they? Perhaps because fear is a prevalent and pervasive emotion on our planet; it sells products and services and advertisers know that. My hope is that when we successfully move from fear to love as the predominant energy on our planet that we will have plenty of Good News channels.

Until then, find shows that make you laugh or turn off the TV or read a wonderful book. Make the effort to connect with your friends and loved ones, even if it means you must “make the first move”. And accept the fact that you, like Aunt Barbara, may have to make that first move 90% of the time – but know also that it will be worth it!

Grow Old Along with Me The Best is Yet To Be

M

y advice for growing old is to do quite the opposite: grow young. Aging is not the end of the world, and actually comes with benefits. Just stop and think about this for a moment…how can you age if your concept of time is lost? I know from my experience as a physician that the healthiest state one can be in is the state in which you are doing something that makes you lose track of time. In the operating room I have no sense of time or self; I am in a trance. I believe that in the moments we let our innate creativity take over, our physiology gives the body a profound message. The sad part is too many people wait until they are told they have a limited amount of time left to live before they start living. I have letters from people who moved, taken off their ties, signed up for violin lessons and did all the things they wanted to do before they died. So they were not denying their mortality but simply enjoying their lifetime, and their letters often end with, “I didn’t die and now I am so busy I am killing myself. Help, where do I go from here?” I tell them to take a nap because they are burning up and not out.

Here’s what I have learned from 90-year-olds. One I shall never forget is a woman who, in her nineties developed breast cancer and gallstones. She was quite upset with God for doing this to her at her age but accepted the surgery and moved on in her life. I asked her to join our cancer support group because I knew she had lessons to teach us about survival behavior. One day when everyone in the group was caught up in their fears and what problems the future held I turned to her for help and asked, “What are you afraid of?” After several minutes of silence she sat up and said, “Oh, I know! Driving on the parkway at night.” That resolved everyone’s issue as we went from fear to laughter.

I have also learned to not keep family problems from aging parents. When I would call my 90-year-old mother to ask how she was, she would instead focus on the problems of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would focus on advising and assisting them to overcome their problems, giving her a sense of meaning and making her feel healthy. So use the wisdom of the aged, do not hide your problems from them and let them guide you. I loved it when I asked my mother what advice she had for seniors that I was going to lecture to. She said, “Tell them to lie a lot.” I asked how that would help and she said, “If you tell people how you really feel they’ll put you in a nursing home. So lie about it.”

To survive we all need to have a sense of meaning in our lives, and express our emotions, including anger, when we are not treated with respect. We need to make our own therapeutic choices, 42

ask for help when we need it, respond to our feelings when making choices, maintain an authentic life and say no to what we do not want to do. Essentially, we need to find our way of expressing love while keeping a childlike sense of humor. I ask seniors how they can die laughing. The answers relate to having accomplished what we are all here to accomplish: serving the world in a unique way, rather than a way imposed by others. My father literally died laughing as my mother told wonderful stories about their early relationship.

Let me close with two simple techniques for knowing what the aged are thinking without having to verbalize things they do not want to share. One is to ask, “How would you feel if placed in a totally white room?” and “What is your favorite animal and why?”

When a senior is tired of living or physically exhausted, the white room is a spiritual sanctuary they are happy to be in because there is no stimulation and they can rest there. When there is still an active life force they will want to leave, redecorate or put in a picture window.

The description of one’s favorite animal is always related to one’s feeling about one’s self. So an active meaningful description also speaks about the same thing in that person’s life and self.

When there is no animal, life or energy in their choice they are ready to move on to become dreamless, unalive and perfect again.

Please remember that leaving our bodies is a therapeutic decision at some point because when we leave we do not take our afflictions with us.
