o be in a non-resistant state means that everything you desire is magnetized to you immediately and you are open to accepting that it may not come in the package you expect. How your dreams will manifest, how the Universe will bring them to you, is not your concern. When you are trying to work out how it will happen, you are emitting a vibration that contains a lack of faith. That you don’t believe you have it already.

You have to be flexible in order to manifest. You can’t be rigid. If you are rigid you will become frustrated and disappointed when things don’t happen the way you think they should. You have to be able to bend and twist like nature to weather the storm. You may think you have it all figured out and you know the best way to create what you want. That’s the ego at work. The soul may have other ways to bring what you want into your life. And sometimes you get what you need which may not always be what you think you want. Your soul may have a learning experience that it needs to fulfill and this is part of the manifestation of your ultimate goal.

Embracing the unexpected is about being receptive to what the Universe and your soul may have in mind for you. The Universe can not express itself through you if you are busy with your little plans, because it wants to express BIG plans through you.

Think of the times in your life when you were open to the unexpected happening. You may have visualized or dreamed of creating something and the end result was more amazing than your wildest imagination.

So, some of you may be saying, “how do I embrace the unexpected when it’s something negative or not what I wanted?” Perfectly good question, especially in these trying economic times. I believe that everything happens for a reason. It is an opportunity for you to check in with your feelings and determine if you attracted the negative outcome because you were focusing on negative thoughts. Or sometimes an unexpected event may appear negative initially, but with time you realize that it was a great learning experience that prepared you for another situation in your life. If you can find the positive in any negative or unpleasant occurrence, then you are well on your way to manifesting an ideal life.

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

ince the beginning of time, people have had a strong connection to their hair. For many, it’s a way to express style and who they are. For the patients and survivors of cancer, the personal connection to hair becomes especially meaningful. Chemotherapy is one of the most effective treatments of cancer; however, one of its negative effects is hair loss. Amongst all of the concerns associated with the condition, hair loss is reported as the side effect that men and women fear most.

Chemotherapy targets all rapid cells such as cancer cells and oftentimes healthy cells, too. Because hair follicles are some of the fastest-growing cells in the body, they are simultaneously destroyed.

Within a few weeks of starting chemotherapy, many experience gradual to dramatic hair loss. Loose hair in your tub drain, in your hairbrush, or on your pillow are signs to look out for. This process can be distressing and there is no guaranteed way to prevent it.

The Yin and Yang of Autumn

A

s the humid days of summer give way to the brittle, dry air of fall, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners begin to turn their attention to the Lungs and their associated functions.

Autumn presents both a vulnerability (i.e. the onset of respiratory infections), as well as an opportunity to strengthen and nourish these vital organs which are very receptive to herbal tonics to keep us well. Conditions such as asthma, smoking damage, chronic cough and susceptibility to bronchitis or sinusitis can also be successfully treated when the correct differential diagnosis and herbal formulas are used.

Traditionally, Autumn is also seen as the harvest season. It is during this time that our bodies harvest and gather energy for the colder months ahead. Because there is less activity in the colder months, more emphasis is placed on building substance (Blood & Yin), nurturing, and supporting our internal organs.

In addition, the lungs hate dryness. The dry fall air, pollution, chemicals and smoke are all ways in which dryness can invade and harm them. Dry lips, dry skin, itchiness, wrinkles, dry throat, dry cough and constipation are signs and symptoms that a lung disharmony is present. The proper moisture level of the lungs can be likened to a moist sponge after it has been rung out. The consistency of the lung fluids should be a little thicker than water and a little thinner than egg whites, and clear. Anything less (or more, as in the case of excessive phlegm) begins to impair their optimum function.

The Lungs are also closely associated with the immune system (though not our cellular immunity) and is called Wei Qi or Protective Qi. Wei Qi circulates around the skin, nose and mouth to defend the body from external attacks by viruses, colds and germs as well as other pathogens like dander, pollen and dust.

If the Wei Qi is not working well, meaning your lungs are not functioning at full capacity, you will experience frequent colds, flu or hay-fever type symptoms. An important part of building Wei Qi is eating foods and herbs that will disperse pathogens and protect the lungs. Catching more than 5 colds in a year points to a deficiency in the energetic lung organ, and we would need to boost our Wei Qi. A very effective and well documented herb to help KEEP the body’s defense Qi at its peak is Astragalus (Huang Qi). The name alone tells a story in the Chinese Language. Huang means Yellow, and Qi is Life. The more yellow these tongue depressor roots look, the more potent the strength. We use this superior herb ONLY when 10

we are well. It is a misconception that using this herb when we start to feel sick will increase our “immune system”. It is actually the opposite. There are many Chinese Herbal formulas like Gan Mao Ling that help to release the pathogens of virus’ and colds from our bodies as well as a Western herb, Echinacea which can be found in most health food stores. Just remember Astragalus and Echinacea are not interchangeable.

There is also a connection between the lungs, the skin, and Wei Qi in TCM. The skin reflects the condition of the lungs, which needs to be strong enough to keep the pathogens out. Increasing the amount of oil we eat can give the skin more protection. If the lungs are strong, the skin will be lustrous and firm, and we resist invasions of flus, viruses, and other pathogens.

Understanding that TCM is based on recognizing patterns of relationship and interconnection is important. Seeing that signs and symptoms of lung disharmonies are not merely physical, but may have emotional and spiritual dimensions as well, is important. The emotion of grief is housed in the energetic lungs. If grief is repressed, it festers in the body and over time causes the lungs to contract. When they can’t extract sufficient Qi from the air we breathe and distribute that Qi around the body, then our ability to defend ourselves against invasion of pathogens is compromised.

Deep breathing, meditation, counseling and exercise, along with pungent foods like scallion soup or ginger teas, may help clear grief by balancing the Lung Qi and helps push pathogens from our body as well.

I hope this article brings some clarity to the work of traditional Chinese medicine and the way herbalists can help in maintaining harmony during the season of Autumn.

I’m excited to be here to answer all of your natural and holistic veterinary care questions! Many of the readers of this magazine have probably already adopted a holistic lifestyle for themselves. There’s not much question anymore in the general medical community that doing so helps us live longer and healthier lives. 30 years ago when I graduated from veterinary school, there were no readily available commercial raw foods. Vaccinations were given annually (or more often). Reliable natural, holistic veterinary care was been hard to find.

Thanks for writing in Leeann. Most important is to follow your trusted family vet’s advice. I do not vaccinate my personal pets at all (except as required by law). In general, an older dog should already have immune system protection against previously vaccinated diseases. You can double check this by having vaccine titers tested.

These are blood tests either sent in to your vet’s lab or sometimes run in the vet’s clinic. Vaccination titer results will better inform your decision whether to “boost” the vaccine. Sharon, there are many, many different ways to approach recurrent urinary problems. Urination outside the litter box is often a manifestation of lower urinary tract disease (”FLUTD”). This is also known as FUS (feline urologic syndrome), “FIC” (feline interstitial cystitis), Pandora syndrome, etc. The bladder is a major stress organ for the cat and can become easily inflamed, both by physical as well as emotional causes. Hi Arthur-Morning spit-ups of this sort are often classified among the “a.m. bilious vomiting syndromes”. Pups with this problem often spit up yellow fluid before breakfast due to normal acid release into the empty stomach. Often just feeding a small meal or giving freeze-dried meat treats before bed will help reduce the frequency. Pepcid, Tagamet, etc. will decrease the am acid and reduce the frequency of the spit-ups. However, I’m not a fan of covering up this symptom as it is a clue that there is an internal imbalance that needs to be corrected. Homeopathic treatment can effectively reduce and even eliminate the imbalance. It also can reduce future problems. Cats lick and lose their fur for many reasons Ruth. Fleas are the most common cause for over-grooming and hair loss - even for inside cats. Daily use of a flea comb will help rule this out. Natural Breast Health with Manual Therapy to Promote Lymphatic Drainage and Nutritional Wellness

reast health is an important component of a woman’s health.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. The key to reducing this statistic is prevention.

Manual Therapy as an Alternative Approach to Breast Health There are many alternative approaches to promote breast health. One such method is manual therapy. Manual therapy is a gentle form of bodywork that can support drainage of the lymphatic system. The lymph is a vital part of our immune system that facilitates our cardiovascular system by helping to drain toxins from the body. Our breasts contain lymph ducts that drain toxins from the breast tissue. When the lymph fluid is stagnant, it can create inflammation of the breast, which can lead to illness. By supporting drainage of this lymph fluid from the breast, we can create healthier, less toxic breast tissue.

Our Lymphatic System Lymph vessels are lined with involuntary muscles that help pump lymph from an area. These small muscles can be in spasm, which can lead to a stagnant or sluggish lymph system. Manual therapy for breast lymph drainage is a relaxing treatment that helps to stimulate the smooth muscles around the lymph vessels. This helps to promote a normal flow of lymph from the breast tissue, thus improving the health of the breast tissue and preventing inflammation in the region that can lead to illness.

Women that have poor lymph flow in the breast may feel tightness or soreness in their breast tissue. They may also experience symptoms in their shoulders and upper back or neck. Equally, for some women, they may not experience any symptoms specific to that body area.

Manual Therapy for Lymphatic Drainage Manual therapy can help create more movement and less pain in an area by reducing tension in the tissues. This gentle approach has been found to reduce chronic joint pain as well as painful tissue in a body region. Regular treatment by a manual therapist has been shown to promote greater health and more movement in the body.

Holistic physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, and body workers typically practice manual therapy.

Nutritional Wellness for Breast Health: Avoid Inflammatory Foods In addition to hands-on therapy, such as manual therapy, there are other supportive efforts we can utilize to create greater breast health; one such effort is nutritional wellness. Breast dysfunction is commonly associated with breast tissue inflammation. The standard American diet is considered to be very inflammatory. When we already have dysfunction in our body, particularly in the breast tissue, we induce greater inflammation in the breasts by consuming primarily inflammatory foods.

What are inflammatory foods? The typical American diet is largely comprised of grain-based foods such as breads and pastas.

In addition, we tend to consume a lot of refined sugars that can be very damaging to the body and contribute to more inflammation in the breasts. By avoiding these types of foods, we can reduce inflammation in the body.

“Clean Eating” What is the best way to eat in order to promote greater health in the body and reduced inflammation of the breast tissue? Ideally, we would adopt a “clean eating” program. This means eating primarily fresh foods such as natural protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats like coconut, avocado, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. If we choose to eat grain, it should never be the focal point of our meal but rather, an accessory. For example, if we break down a dinner plate into proportions, ¼ of the dish should be reserved for natural protein. If we eat meat, it should ideally be grass-fed beef, natural poultry, or wild fish. Half of the dish should be comprised of diverse vegetables (a combination of raw and cooked is fine). The remaining ¼ of the plate can be starches like sweet potatoes or butternut squash. If we choose to have grain, it should be whole grain. This is clean eating in a nutshell! By adopting a clean way of eating, we are creating greater health throughout the body and support for our breast tissue by reducing inflammation.

Making Good Choices Perfection is not the goal, it is impossible. Striving for perfection can create stress in our lives, and of course, guilt when we don’t achieve it. But by generating the effort to make better choices most of the time, we can improve our health by leaps and bounds!

It’s helpful to consider that inflammation is the underlying cause of

most diseases and illnesses today. When we avoid inflammatory foods and adopt a clean eating lifestyle, we can prevent illness and promote greater health and longevity in our whole body.

Can an Unhealthy Digestive Tract Increase Breast Cancer?

O

ne in eight; this is the number of women who will experience breast cancer in their lifetime. Dramatically higher than in the past, this statistic has physicians and researchers hunting down causes and solutions for this disturbing rise.

Researchers have identified some known risks. There are genetic predispositions as well as obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance, and links with low Vitamin D status and hormone imbalances. We know that many breast cancers like to grow when exposed to higher levels of female hormones and insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. While these connections certainly can explain a portion of the increase, there may be another component at work, our bacteria!

Bacteria as Medicine “Bacteria” was a dirty word for many years, but now we realize that they outnumber the cells on our bodies 10:1. Our micro biome is a powerful determinant in our health and disease state. It makes sense that it could contribute greatly to our risk of cancer or aid in prevention.

The link between breast health and the micro biome was first discovered in 2006, when mice were introduced to pathogenic bacteria and consistently developed breast tumors. By 2013, researchers had determined that the micro biome, the bacteria that lives in us, is indeed a modulator for cancer risk. This means a healthy digestive tract and micro biome can help prevent cancer, but an unhealthy gastrointestinal tract and pathogenic bacteria would increase a person’s risk. The micro floras in digestive tracts have a direct connection to breast health.

There have been many parts of the body that researchers and scientists have been evaluating as sites of micro flora. The gastrointestinal tract, vaginal canal, mouth, and skin have been some of the major areas of research. More recently, breast tissue previously thought to be sterile has been studied. Not only was healthy breast tissue studied, but cancerous tissue as well. Researchers found that cancerous tissue had less overall bacteria compared to healthy tissue. Cancerous tissue was also more likely to contain Methylobacterium radiotolerans, a bacterium known to invade immunesuppressed tissue.

Another bacterium, Spingomonas yanoikuyae, was also found in healthy breast tissue. It is now being researched as a potential breast probiotic; as it helps degrade pollutants in the environment and possibly helps modulate estrogen locally as well.

Hormone Detox and Bacteria One appliance of how bacteria influence hormones has been well explored, the detoxification of hormones. The liver has a series 16

of shoots and ladders that it uses to carve up and send off anything it no longer wants in the body, from hormones to plastics. One of the major pathways is known as glucuronidation. The liver attaches glucuronic acid to the targeted hormone or chemical, so that it can be transported through bile into the intestines. At this point, the liver did its job and considers the hormone, toxin, or whatever waste product it wanted gone, processed and cleared.

In the intestines, bacteria interact with the cells lining our intestines as well as the waste products passing through. This is one of the major areas of study in the micro biome, as certain bacteria change how we clear our waste.

Beta-glucuronidase is an enzyme that breaks the bond between a waste product and the glucuronic acid the liver attached to it.

Certain bacteria in the GI tract produce this enzyme. If it is present, the hormone or toxin is liberated from being bound to glucuronic acid and is often reabsorbed into the body; the liver now has to reprocess it in order to clear it.

It’s hard to ever look at a process or mechanism in the body as “good” or “bad.” However, in the case of beta-glucuronidase, having women reabsorb their estrogen that they are trying to detox, is not a good thing. It is a cause of increased estrogen levels and hormone imbalance in women, and thus an increased risk of breast cancer.

Enzyme and activity in the intestines can be measured using a simple stool test. This helps physicians and patients understand if they need to address intestinal clearance of estrogen or if the patient should focus on other preventative measures. Healthy bacteria like L. acidophilus and many bifidobacterium species lower beta-glucuronidase. The most effective means of lowering this enzyme is with a high vegetable diet, specifically onions, garlic, greens, apples and oranges, which are high in glucuronic acid. There are also supplements containing glucuronic acid such as calcium d-glucarate.

One of the main tenants of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person. As we studied the micro biome, this principle continues to be reinforced and almost expanded to include our micro biome and our environment.

Hypnosis: A Gentler Approach Than Battling Cancer

T

he battle approach to cancer is so pervasive in our thinking that it has become our only strategy. We are constantly waging war on cancer using chemo, radiation and other highly toxic drugs as weapons. The only problem is that this approach doesn’t work any better than the wars we’ve waged throughout history.

There are no winners here… cancer is on the rise. Death rates over the past fifty years have failed to decline and the side effects of the treatments are often more deadly than the disease. A large percentage of oncologists polled would not use the treatments they’re prescribing for their patients on themselves or recommend them for their loved ones. I could write an entire article about this faulty system, but that would leave you with nothing but fear without any other recourse.

So, let’s look at cancer from a different perspective. What if, instead of being the enemy, cancer was the messenger that we can’t ignore? What if cancer is present because we’ve ignored the more subtle messages we received prior to its arrival? What if cancer thinks it’s serving a purpose or helping us in some way? What if it’s a representation of significant imbalances in our thinking, our beliefs, and our lives that can be brought back into balance? What if it’s an expression of a toxic emotional load that we’ve been carrying? What if it houses crucially important information, and we’re trying to kill it versus listen to it? What if there are some totally natural and highly effective ways of treating it that don’t leave a battleground within our bodies? These questions are worth pondering right?

OK – so how can hypnosis help? Cancer is essentially a failure of the immune system, and yet we’ve traditionally used treatments that all but eradicate the immune system when it’s needed the most.

Because hypnosis accesses the unconscious mind, the part of the mind that’s in charge of the strength or weakness of the immune system, it has been proven to boost the immune system. This allows it to get back on track and do what it does naturally, which is to correct imbalances within our system in a way that’s healthy for the whole.

Hypnosis also allows access to the subconscious mind, which houses our long-term history and can actually pinpoint the event that caused the shift from health to disease. In one cancer client, it was when her father told her to “go play in traffic,” and her child mind took that to mean she didn’t deserve to be alive. In another, it was watching an age-inappropriate horror movie that instilled a fear of death. For another, it helped her see that she was loved by her parents, who prior to her diagnosis, were consumed with their careers and didn’t have the bandwidth to demonstrate the love they felt for her. For another, it was the excess amount of sugar in her diet.

There is always a reason for its existence and the subconscious mind knows what that reason is. Once the reason is found, understood, and processed, the need or reason for the messenger of cancer is no longer necessary and it feels free to recede.

It can eliminate addictions such as smoking and alcohol abuse. The desire to exercise can also increase, which helps the lymphatic system, brings in much needed O2 and strengthens the physical, mental and emotional bodies. Hypnosis can significantly reduce stress and eliminate its underlying causes, which is usually the fear, “I’m not good enough to handle life’s challenges,” or some other form of negative self-talk. It can clear fears of death, which at the subconscious level, are the number one cause of deadly disease, along with the trauma of treatment and fear that the cancer will return.

Hypnosis has been proven to help reduce many of the side effects including pain and nausea. It has also been proven to help the body heal faster and more comfortably post surgery.

Hypnosis is not only great for the cancer patient, but for their caregivers as well.

It allows caregivers to receive much needed self-care to fill their giving cups, if you will, so they can continue to be of support. Hypnosis is also phenomenal for clearing the grief of losing a loved one.

Extensive clinical trials over the past 25 years (with approximately 67 trials and 35 more in progress, as of mid-2012) have shown that its bioactive extract, curcumin, has promising effects in patients with a variety of diseases. Some ailments include: Alzheimer’s disease, osteo and rheumatoid and arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes and obesity, digestive diseases (IBD/IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), kidney disease, and psoriasis. The abundance of evidence calls for a two-part discussion.

What Is Curcumin?

Curcumin is a yellow-orange polyphenol. Derived from turmeric, a member of the ginger family, this micronutrient displays antioxidant and potential disease-preventive properties. It has been used for more than 3,000 years in the traditional Indian medicine known as, Ayurveda. Its efficacy originates from its ability to combat both inflammation and oxidation, the twin causes of most illnesses.

Studies indicate that curcumin safely combats inflammation by inhibiting the cytokine, NF-kappaB (Mol. Pharmacology January 2006 Vol. 69 No. 1), which acts as a switch, turning on the genes that produce the body’s inflammatory responses. Gene expression of pro-inflammatory NF-kappaB increases in aging adults, thus causing numerous degenerative and immune diseases. Curcumin also reduces inflammation by (1) inhibiting the pro-inflammatory activity of other cytokines, COX-2 and 5-LOX (enzymes responsible for inflammation, pain, and aging, which NSAIDS target) (Adv Exp Med Biol. 2007; 595), and (2) increasing the protective activity of the potent antioxidant glutathione (Antioxid Redox Signal. 2005 Jan-Feb).

Curcumin is an exceedingly powerful food-based antioxidant (much stronger than blueberries, strawberries, and dark chocolate).

It neutralizes unstable, reactive free radicals (unstable atoms or molecules with a single unpaired electron in the outer shell), whose accumulation and chain-reactive activity in the body, over time, are often blamed for unhealthy aging.

Absorption & Bioactivity Due to its poor absorption from the intestines, and rapid metabolism and elimination, it is difficult for curcumin to be administered orally and reach blood levels sufficient to exert its bioactivities (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol, 61, 37-44, 2015).

Multiple curcumin preparations with drug delivery systems have been created to enhance its absorption beyond the common turmeric that is standardized to 95% curcuminoids (95% Turmeric). Some formulations include: (1) Patented Curcumin C3 Complex® - with BioPerine, a black pepper fruit extract containing 95-98% piperine, which inhibits curcumin metabolism in the gut and liver shows increased curcumin bioavailability by one and a half times (Planta Med 1998 May); (2) Patented BCM-95®, micronized curcumin with turmeric essential oils, shown in human clinical studies to deliver up to seven times better absorption than 95% Turmeric (Indian J Pharm Sci. 2008 Jul-Aug) and to remain in the bloodstream for almost twice as long (8-12 hours); (3) Patented Meriva, a curcumin-soy phosphatidylcholine phytosome complex, which in a randomized, double-blind, crossover human study has been shown to increase absorption 29 times over an unformulated curcuminoid mixture (J Nat Prod. 2011) (see also Cancer Chemother Pharmacol. 2007 Jul); and (4) Theracurmin®, a colloidal submicron-particle curcumin, that is easily, stably, water-dispersible , which has shown in one preliminary, double-blind, 3-way crossover study of nine healthy, young men and women to yield a much higher absorption efficiency than BCM95 and Meriva (i.e., curcumin blood concentration 10.7 to 5.6 times higher than BCM95 and Meriva, respectively); further clinical research is ongoing (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo) 2015) (see also J. Anti-Aging Medicine 9 (1) : 43-51, 2012).

Research-Based Therapeutic Application Studies have shown that curcumin has therapeutic application against inflammation, infection, bacteria including H. pylori, fungus/ yeast and viruses, lifestyle-related disease, neurological disorders, and even cancer (J. Anti-Aging Medicine 9 (1):3-51, 2012). Researchers have thus examined it as a target against a wide variety of diseases, some of which are discussed below.

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) AD is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration, declining activities of daily living, and behavioral changes. Accumulated oxidative stress and resulting free radicals lead to production and deposition of an abnormal protein

called amyloid β-peptide, which triggers more oxidation, inflammation, and clumps of dead/dying nerve and brain cells. The use of curcumin has shown to improve the overall memory of AD patients by: (1) decreased β-amyloid plaques (due to the lipophilic nature of curcumin that enables it to cross the blood brain barrier); (2) delayed degradation of neurons; (3) metal-chelation; and (4) reduced inflammation and oxidative stress (Ann Indian Acad Neurol. 2008 Jan-Mar).

Arthritis: Osteo (OA) and Rheumatoid (RA) Arthritis is a chronic disease that results from the inflammation of one or more joints. With more than 100 reported forms, the three most common are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

In one recent study, researchers compared curcumin alone (500mg/day), curcumin with the NSAID diclofenac sodium, and the NSAID alone, in 45 patients with active RA. They found curcumin to be a safe and effective way to suppress the level of C-reactive protein (CRP), a non-specific marker of inflammation and disease.

The curcumin group showed the highest percentage of improvement in overall disease and swelling/tenderness scores, which were significantly better than the patients in the NSAID group (Phytother Res. 2012 Nov).

In two other 2010 studies, researchers evaluated the efficacy of curcumin in the management of OA. The first three-month study of the effect of 200 mg per day in 50 patients (product-evaluation registry of Meriva®) examined the impact of curcumin on pain level, mobility, and inflammation (CRP). Compared to only modest improvements in these measurements in the control group, Meriva decreased the pain score by 58%, increased treadmill walking distance from 76m to 332m, and significantly decreased CRP levels (Panminerva Med. 2010 Jun; 52 (2 Suppl 1).

In the second, eight-month study of 100 OA patients, 1g/day of Meriva curcumin decreased pain by more than 50%, increased treadmill walking by almost threefold, and significantly decreased multiple serum inflammatory biomarkers, compared to the control group. The curcumin treatment also greatly decreased gastrointestinal complications, edema, patient use of NSAIDs/painkillers, and the need for hospital admissions, consultations, and tests (Altern Med Rev. 2010 Dec).

Cancer Cancer is a multi-stage process resulting from the deregulation of more than 500 genes at multiple steps in cell signaling pathways.

While tumor-suppressing genes enable the body to combat cancer, aging and environmental factors can turn off or silence them. Epigenetic researchers have determined that curcumin’s multi-targeting activities, either alone or with other agents, help fight almost all types of human cancer (Indian J Pharm Sci. 2008 Jul-Aug) (AAPS J. 2013 Jan) (Cancer Lett. 2007 Oct). This is accomplished in part, by reawakening these genes in order to stop: (1) conversion of normal cells to cancerous ones; (2) replication of cancer cells (tumor formation); and (3) migration of cancerous cells to other areas of the body (metastasis) (Arch Pharm 2010 Sept) (Mol. Pharmacology January 2006 Vol. 6 No. 1).

Kurzrock, M.D., another professor at the UTAC’s Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics, stated that it was clear from the data she reviewed that curcumin “was just as potent at killing tumor cells in the lab as any experimental drug I’d seen from pharmaceutical companies.” Curcumin has thus demonstrated potential against colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, lung cancer, oral cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (AAPS J. 2013 Jan), and cervical cancer (Asian Pac J Cancer Prev. 2014).

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Substantial scientific evidence indicates that curcumin impacts CVD through diverse mechanisms. Curcumin combats the inflammation and oxidative stress that causes atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), lowers damaging LDL cholesterol, raises protective HDL cholesterol, and reduces triglycerides (Int J Biochem Cell Biol. 2009) (Phytotherapy Research March 2013, Vol. 27, Issue 3).

In fact, researchers found that long-term treatment with curcumin has cholesterol-lowering and atherosclerotic-suppression capacity “comparable to the protective effects of lovastatin” (Mol Nutr Food Res. 2011 Dec). Lovastatin (Mevacor®) is a statin drug frequently prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and raise HDL. Safety Curcumin is considered extremely safe, even when used in dosages as high as 8 g/day. Other than diarrhea, nausea, allergic skin reactions, and sleep interruption (anecdotal only – science indicates that it supports sleep), few side effects from use of high doses have been reported. Certain patients should use curcumin with caution, including those: (1) with gallstones or gallbladder disease (high doses over prolonged periods may be toxic to the liver); (2) taking blood thinning medications; (3) diagnosed with anemia (curcumin is an iron chelator); and (4) who are pregnant, nursing, or children.

While curcumin can be used safely in preventive and healing regimens, it is best to seek the advice of an expert in nutrition or functional medicine when attempting to change the course of disease. Since nutritional supplements can interact with prescription drugs, advise your doctor of your desire to incorporate complementary medicine into your health program, and do your own research before mixing natural remedies with any prescribed medications.

Breast Health Beyond Cancer

A

cancer experience is the definitive existential crisis. It shakes us out of a comfortable fog of illusion, which allows us to maintain a more-or-less intellectual perspective on life’s endpoint. It plunks us down in a harsh landscape that offers an alltoo-close and personal view of the possibly sooner, not later reality of our physical death.

For breast cancer survivors, hormonal balance and a lifestyle that promotes it is paramount. The anti-inflammation and immune system-modulating hormone cortisol, the blood sugar regulating hormone insulin, sex hormones, and hormone-like compounds in the environment (so-called endocrine disruptors) must all be factored into a post-cancer plan for breast health.

So when the rigors of cancer treatment have been endured and are behind us, and we are back in the land of the living, it’s understandable to just want to put the whole painful, terrifying experience in the past and get back to “normal life.” As David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D. relates about his own post-cancer stance in his book, AntiCancer, “Like most people who have had a first alert with cancer and who have pulled through, I chose to treat my illness like a bout of pneumonia or a broken bone.” But ask a breast cancer survivor if she’d prefer a past history of a wrist fracture or cancer, she doesn’t need to think twice about the answer. As Servan-Schreiber goes on to say, “I had never considered that if I’d had a cancer… I needed to take charge of myself to limit the risk of relapse.”

Fit vs. Fat Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most broadly supportive strategies for breast health. Obesity has been associated with increased overall cancer risk but specifically with increased risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence. This may have to do with negative factors associated with being overweight such as: increased levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) (both are associated with increased breast cancer risk), higher levels of more dangerous, cancer-promoting forms of estrogen (such as 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone), and the estrogen-producing effects of fat cells.

Unlike acute illness or physical trauma, a breast cancer diagnosis casts a long and threatening shadow into the future. This shadow is the risk of recurrence and no matter how we may try to repress or ignore it, it is always with us. The risk of recurrence and the fear that it brings can be lessened by focusing the light of our awareness and intention on actively creating wellness in our bodies, minds, and spirits. As Lise Alschuler, N.D. and Karolyn Gazella note in their inspiring book, The Definitive Guide to Thriving After Cancer, “In an ironic twist of truth, this illness – and the fear that it evokes – can teach us how to embrace life, to meet it head on, and to live with vitality. The experience of confronting cancer can teach us how to reduce the risk of it returning. It can be a bridge to deeper and greater health.”

It’s not a coincidence that the same factors that prevent breast cancer also promote breast health and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. It’s encouraging that these anticancer strategies are neither exotic nor are they difficult to implement, with a little knowledge, a commitment to healthy change, and a bit of persistence. They also happen to be in alignment with current health recommendations for the prevention of many chronic diseases. Thus, the same action plan that helps to protect against breast cancer recurrence is also a plan for wellness and vitality throughout our lives.

Other possible factors influencing this obesity-breast cancer association may have to do with what tends to be undersupplied by a lifestyle associated with excess weight such as the antioxidantrich and hormone-balancing benefits of a diet rich in fiber, colorful vegetables and fruits, and the immune-supportive, stress hormonemodulating, anti-inflammatory effects of regular exercise. A 2014 study found that breast cancer survivors were more likely to gain weight in the first five years after treatment than cancer-free women.

Focusing on attaining and maintaining a healthy weight is especially important to offset this tendency.

Too often, the prospect of getting fit and making the positive lifestyle changes that come with it are perceived as an overwhelming and complex undertaking, such that inertia takes over and we remain stuck in our unhealthy habits, feeling powerless to move ahead. Habits come to exist because they are comfortable to us, and we equate healthy change with deprivation, self-denial, and discomfort. But authentic transformation is not about dramatic change, nor is it a restrictive “boot camp” mentality. Positive change is about enrichment – taking small steps that generate vitality, wellbeing, and peace of mind and spirit. The “side effects” of these steps include lower body fat, improved sex hormone, stress hormone and insulin balance, reduced inflammation, and a stronger immune system. All of these factors protect against breast cancer recurrence and improve the quality of our lives. Some measures to a healthier lifestyle include:

1. Eat More Plants: A plant-based diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and healthy oils (such as olive oil).

As a result, it is lower in animal sources of protein (meat/ fowl/ fish) and saturated fat than the usual western diet, and contains minimal amounts of processed or refined sugars and flour products. An easy way to move toward this way of eating is to start by spending more time shopping at your local farmer’s market, or in the produce section of your grocery or health food store.

Choose appealing, colorful fruits and veggies to bring home and prepare (organic choices, as much as possible, are especially important for breast health). Salads, soups, and smoothies are easy and tasty ways of slanting meals toward the plant kingdom.

Toss some beans on a green salad, snack on a few pecans or almonds between meals, have lentils as a side dish with your roast chicken, have an entirely plant-based meal a couple of times a week. Don’t forget the mushrooms! Mushrooms, in addition to their immune-strengthening benefits, have been shown to inhibit processes associated with breast cancer development.

A Side Note On Plant-based Diets: One of the best reasons to include more of the plant kingdom in your diet is that in doing so, you are not only feeding yourself, you’re also providing nourishment for a whole microuniverse of microbes in your digestive tract. They eat what we eat and it’s no coincidence that a plant-based diet supports healthy populations of beneficial probiotic organisms. Thanks to emerging research displaying the importance to human health of the micro-biome (the trillions of microbes in the human digestive tract and their genetic material), significant connections are being identified for breast health and the health of the digestive tract. Just a few of the ways that digestive health influences breast health: • The presence of probiotics (healthy bacteria) in the digestive tract has been shown to “prime” the immune system, to empower it throughout the body. In fact, the majority of immune activity takes place in the digestive tract, through an arm of the immune system called the GALT (gut associated lymphatic tissue) or MALT (mucosal associated lymphatic tissue). This speaks to the central role in immune regulation played by the gastrointestinal tract.

• A well functioning digestive tract allows us to obtain optimal nutrition from the food we eat. Yes, “we are what we eat” but as importantly, we are what we digest and what we absorb.

The best diet cannot provide optimal nourishment if food is not broken down properly or is not absorbed well.

• The balance of bacteria, yeasts, and other microorganisms in the digestive tract influences our health for better or worse.

For example, elevated levels of the enzyme beta-glucuronidase, which are associated with bacterial imbalance, have been shown to increase the risk for breast and other hormonal cancers. It does this by reactivating hormones and toxins that have been neutralized and released into the small intestine, whereupon they are reabsorbed into the blood stream to exert their toxic effect on tissues once again.

2. Move Your Body: If you’re like the man who said, “Whenever I feel the need to exercise, I lie down until it goes away,” then, may I have your attention, please? Research shows that exercise has particular benefits for breast cancer survivors. There is ample evidence for improvement with regular exercise in many of the biomarkers associated with breast cancer.

The level of exercise sufficient to confer protection may be less than you’d think: a 2011 study at the Yale School of Public Health looked at 4,463 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and found that those who exercised for the equivalent of three hours per week by fast walking (that’s 30 minutes, six days a week) had significantly lower mortality from breast cancer and other causes than inactive women. So find a walking buddy (human or canine), a dance, yoga, or Pilate’s class, a swimming pool – find a form of movement you enjoy - and get into the healthy habit of exercise.

3. Cultivate Inner Peace: Cortisol, a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, helps us to maintain equilibrium in the face of stress. When cortisol stays elevated for extended periods, however, it has negative effects on the body and mind.

Immune function is suppressed, and sleep quality and neurotransmitter balance are impaired, affecting our natural rhythms of rest, recovery, positive mood and energy.

The interconnections between mind, body, and spirit have been a focus of attention in the cancer research community in recent years, leading to the awareness that states of serenity, a sense of life purpose, interconnectedness with others, and balanced optimism play important roles in cancer prevention and survival. There are many ways to access the calm and peace within: connecting with a spiritual community in alignment with your beliefs, going on retreat, walking in nature, mindfulness and meditation practices, performing acts of service. If the inner life has not beckoned you in the past, let your cancer experience serve as an invitation to strengthen your connection with the infinitely rich and profoundly reassuring world within and beyond yourself.

4. Clean Up Your Act: Pesticides and food additives, household cleaning products, cooking and food storage practices, personal care products from perfume to sunscreen can expose us to chemicals with estrogen-like effects, the so-called endocrine disruptors. Resources such as the non-profit, Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) provide guides to “detoxify24

ing” your personal environment. Making the shift to “greener” choices reduces the burden of estrogen and estrogen-mimics in the body and their potential for cancer-promoting harm.

5. Supplemental Allies: Although healthy lifestyle steps are essential elements of a breast health plan, supplements can also play a strong supporting role, supplying nutrients depleted by cancer treatment and augmenting cancer-protective body functions. Basics could include an activated B-Complex vitamin, a high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral supplement, a molecularly distilled, sustainably sourced and triglyceride-bound Omega-3 marine oil, a probiotic formula which uses clinically effective strains and whose potency is guaranteed through the time of expiration, and vitamin D (monitor your serum levels through testing at least twice a year).

Additional supplements for consideration that have encouraging scientific support for preventing breast cancer recurrence include: • SGS: Sulforaphane glucosinylate is a compound found in members of the brassica family of vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy and others). It is concentrated in young broccoli sprouts and has been studied for more than two decades for its anticancer effects. A recently published study performed at the University of Michigan on cultures of human breast cancer cells found that sulforaphane targeted and killed breast cancer stem cells, a small number of cells within tumors, which drive the growth and spread of cancer. Because tumor stem cells permit cancers to recur after treatment and metastasize, and because they are so small in number (approximately one cell in a million is a stem cell), the effectiveness of sulforaphane in finding them, reducing their number, and their ability to create new tumors without affecting healthy cells, is a truly groundbreaking finding.

SGS supplements have been available several years; high quality products are standardized to provide about 50 mg. of SGS per capsule from 500 mg. of broccoli sprouts and/or seed. Of course, you can also grow your own sprouts from organic seeds and enjoy an ounce or two a day on salads or as a snack.

• Curcumin: Like SGS, the anticancer benefits of this deep golden-hued component of the spice turmeric, found in curry, have been researched for decades. Curcumin

has also been receiving recent attention for the ability to target and kill breast cancer stem cells.

Since bioavailability (its ability to be absorbed by the body) has been an issue, time-released and waterdispersible formulations are options.

• EGCG: Epigallocatechin gallate, is a polyphenol compound found in high amounts in green tea. Studies supporting its protective benefit for breast cancer recurrence have evaluated the effects of green tea as a beverage, but organically sourced, highly concentrated supplements are an alternative, particularly if you’re not a fan of the taste.

To Survive, Or Thrive?

In their excellent “Five to Thrive” multimedia initiative, Alschuler and Gazella (both cancer survivors and “thrivers”) have shifted the focus of life after cancer from mere survivorship to a more proactive goal of thriving, of creating an internal environment that is not just resistant to recurrence, but is nourished and empowered on every level for the healthiest life possible.

The Five to Thrive Plan is based on the large and ever-increasing body of evidence that the direction of movement along the continuum from health to cancer (and back to health) is strongly influenced by specific aspects of body system function. Alschuler and Gazella provide a five-point plan for balancing these functional states, cite the scientific basis for each strategy, and supply simple, concrete action steps for implementation, with coaching tips for moral support. Their book, online magazine, website, and radio program serve as a comprehensive source of ongoing, up-to-date, expert guidance for moving from survivor to thriver.

Are You Cured? Or Are You Healed?

Naturopathic medicine has long made a distinction between the concept of cure and that of healing. Cure implies that the problem at hand has been dealt with and the level of health enjoyed previous to diagnosis has been regained.

In contrast, to be healed means that the limitations and imbalances that promoted illness have been resolved and the person is healthier than they were before. I have also come to believe that healing requires us to participate in this process in a way not necessarily re-

Divorce as a Death and Initiation: A Guide to the Five Stages of Divorce

n 1969, Swiss Psychiatrist, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross created the five stages of grief from her work dealing with terminally ill patients.

Her groundbreaking discovery became the bible; giving people a framework and comfort by helping them understand what is happening while they are going through their loss.

ing it from a larger perspective. From this place, we can embrace the point of view that we attract our partner for a reason, and a big reason is that they are one of our most powerful teachers. Shamans often refer to these types of teachers as our petty tyrants, masterfully pushing all of our buttons.

Divorce is a form of death that has its own stages of grief. After many years of counseling people going through transitions, including those who are in the midst of terminally ill relationships, I have created a model based on Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s groundbreaking work to help people emerge from these difficult times empowered and knowing that they are here for a reason.

If we spend this entire stage unconsciously spewing out anger at the other person, we miss the lessons. Pay attention to the things that trigger you; watch your emotions, beautiful gifts are wrapped up inside of these feelings. Take the courage to feel and follow these emotions to a spot in your body; then sit in that place for a little while and say, “hi.”

Denial It has been said that denial is a human’s most predictable emotion. Divorce awakens our “stuff,” our fears, insecurities, as well as our incredible potential. These thoughts and feelings can be painful, and as human beings our natural unconscious response is to avoid pain. Consequently, we make up stories in our minds and create a false reality that we perceive as preferable to the one that we are in. We say things like “Maybe I should just stick it out,” “Maybe it isn’t really as bad as I make it out to be,” and “Who am I to think I deserve better?”

Note: If the feelings become too powerful, give yourself the compassion to leave it alone for a while and move back into the anger, or any other stage for that matter. This is not about being perfect; it is about being fully human- awake and alive throughout this journey.

Additionally, no one consciously asks for or deserves an abusive situation! If you are in one leave, get help and be strong, you don’t deserve it!

Denial is a natural stage of the separation process. By being aware that you are in the midst of this stage, you can avoid “buying in” to the tall tales you are telling yourself. Stay true to yourself and your reason for moving on.

Anger This is the place where denial meets reality head on… ouch!

The old stance of “My relationship is not so bad,” has lost most of its charm. Emotions rise and blame begins; you add up all of the terrible things about your partner, some that you have kept inside over the years.

Releasing anger in a healthy way is beneficial and a natural part of this stage, but in order to get the most out of this stage, try view26

Bargaining: Who gets the house? Who gets the money? And what about the kids? This is the place where we use things of value against the other partner. This can be a dangerous and costly stage if not managed well. When we get caught up in the fight, it can keep us in this bargaining stage for a prolonged period of time, resulting in both financial and emotional costs.

This is a time to have both feet firmly rooted on the ground because the financial decisions we are about to make will have long lasting results. Pay attention to the following five rules: 1. Know Your Balance Sheet. Not all assets are created equal.

You need to understand the type of assets you have to avoid surprises down the road. In many divorces, the two largest assets are the home and the retirement accounts. These are two completely different types of assets. Don’t accept splitting one

for the other without addressing the tax consequences and your liquidity needs.

This is just one example of a myriad of asset types to understand.

2. Consider Taxes. Income taxes play a big part of most divorces. Alimony payments are considered taxable income whereas child support payments are not. How will taxes impact your net cash flow?

Who should claim the dependents? Are there any tax carry forwards from prior years to divide? This list could go on and on. The help of a tax expert in this area is critical.

3. Plan Ahead. What will your postdivorce financial life look like? Do you know what your cash flow needs will be? Will there be enough after-tax income to meet those needs? Having these answers will help you negotiate for the right amount of support (if you need it) and give you peace of mind knowing what lifestyle you can afford post-divorce.

4. Consider Credit Issues: Do you have credit cards in your name? If not and you are removed as an authorized user, your credit score will take a hit and make it more difficult for you to obtain your own credit cards, loans, etc. If you don’t have your own card, apply before the divorce is final. Also, be sure to pull your credit report before you settle. You are allowed one free report per year and it can be accessed at www.annualcreditreport.com. You should request your spouse’s report as well.

5. Investments: Know where your investments are and how they are allocated.

Find a financial advisor who has deep experience, not only in asset management, but also in working with clients going through a divorce. Of course I am a bit bias, but working with the right advisor through these challenging times can make a huge difference through the process.

Lost/Depressed Dante, in “The Divine Comedy,” summed it up beautifully when he started with the words…

“In the middle of the road of my life I awoke in a dark wood, where the true way was wholly lost.”

Here you are in the middle of the reality of your situation, saddened by the certainty

of this loss, and happy that it is almost over.

All of the noise and drama and fighting that kept you distracted has gone away. You find yourself in the middle of your life, in a dark place that stirs up remaining demons. You are lost and in the depth of your initiation called divorce.

When you are in the middle of your divorce it is hard, if not impossible, to see this time as having much value or as an initiation; but that is the way initiations work. Initiations come upon us when we least expect them and throw our lives into a whirlwind, leaving us feeling like we are lost and depressed. They rip you apart like the god, Kali in a wrathful, relentless, loving way, with only one goal in mind - to break you down so you can be rebuilt and become the person you are meant to be- in all your authentic power.

So don’t confuse depression as weakness or a permanent condition, it is a stage.

You are supposed to feel lost right now. It is the only true way to your authentic self.

Think about it: if you sent a young boy into the woods for a week to fend for himself as part of an initiation, like many indigenous cultures still do, and then you gave him a flashlight and a map, it would kind of defeat the whole purpose. It’s OK to be lost, trust in the path.

Acceptance Although you may flow in and out of the five stages of divorce, if you pay attention, stay awake and do your work through each stage, you can graduate into this final stage of acceptance. This is where you move on with your life. You emerge as a different person, transformed and healed from old wounds and your core life lessons.

Stay awake. We all know the person who gets divorced and ends up marrying the same wife or husband a few years later with a different name. Be careful of what you attract as you re-enter into the new reality. If you see yourself attracting the same type of teacher, it is a sign that you may need to do some more inner work.

In summary: It is true; the teacher arrives when the student is ready. Mindfully attract a team of specialized experts in the field of divorce matters to help guide you through these times- an attorney, accountant, financial advisor, mediator, family/alternative therapist.

Waking up is worth it. You deserve it and the world needs you. You are here for a reason!

Suddenly, carving out time to exercise and finding money to buy organic food looks like a walk in the park. Instantly, your spouse, also in shock, has to take on more tasks and provide more emotional support. Your job suffers. You can’t tell your elderly mom – it might kill her. You see the worry on your friends’ faces. You’re scared. And you are about to have appointments every single day.

I

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I was shocked. Until I got that call, I would have told you I was pretty darn healthy (ok, I did not exercise enough). You could have knocked me over with a feather when I got the diagnosis. In the time I’ve spent in medical appointments over the past three months, I could have gone to the gym 3 days a week for six months. And I’m not even half-way through.

And what appointments they are! Biopsies, surgery, radiation.

And the money! More than enough to purchase organic vegetables and fruits for the neighborhood and more.

My doctor told me the lump in my breast wouldn’t have been found in a mammogram or a thermogram. And she was right – I’d had both and had a clean bill of health! That’s what technology told me, and I relied on technology! I almost never did breast self exams (BSEs). Lucky for me that I did one when I did – the tumor was stage one. My prognosis is good. I am SO lucky. The appointments, the money, the terror and the disappointment could have been so much worse.

Do Your Breast Self Exams - Women AND Men I have been to the cancer centers in Plainville and Avon numerous times now, and I have seen FAR TOO MANY people who were not so lucky. I wish you could see their faces and their families. I’m writing this in hopes that I convince readers to live right, and to regularly, religiously, do BSEs – women and men.

Mammography and Thermography Miss Up To 50% of Breast Cancers According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, mammography misses 16% to 30% percent of breast cancers. Thermography reportedly misses between 9 and 50%.

Approximately 20% of the time, breast cancers are found by physical examination. Some doctors cite a 2008 study that states that BSEs cause unnecessary biopsies! IGNORE THEM! Many doctors, including my wonderful surgeon, and numerous organizations, including breastcancer.org, insist that BSE is an essential screening strategy, and SO DO I!! If you have a false positive that results in a biopsy, you’ve wasted a few hours, and had about 3 minutes of unpleasantness, and you’ll be a little sore for a week.

Scared Straight Find a lump. Go to your family doctor. Go to the radiologist.

Maybe twice. Go to your family doctor again. Pick a surgeon. Get a biopsy. Maybe two. Meet with ‘your team’ a few times. Go to the dentist, because dental procedures are a no-go after some cancer treatments. Go to the hospital for surgery. Come home and recuperate. Go to radiation. Every day for probably 4 to 8 weeks. If you need chemo, add a once-a-week, appointment to have poison injected, for several hours, through an IV into your hand or wrist, or perhaps you’ll have a catheter port implanted in your chest, eliminating the need to find a suitable vein at each treatment. Or maybe you’ll get a chemo pill with a list of very undesirable side-effects, including cancer recurrence (no kidding) and sudden death. And then of course there are the meds that minimize the side-effects of nausea, anxiety, and inflammation. With chemo (and sometimes with radiation) comes hair loss and wig and/ or hat shopping if you want to avoid the sorry stares.

Meet with your naturopathic doctor.

Integrate the recommendations as best you can, and decide what you are willing and not willing to do. THIS IS HARD. This is why you should make cancer a hobby now.

Pick an oncologist you like; you’ll be with her/ him for the rest of your life, and if you are lucky, that will be a long time.

Planning a Family?

If you are hoping to have a family, you’ll be faced with impossible decisions – decisions that may make having a family difficult if not out of the question, even if your prognosis is good.

Prevention You know a lot of the things you should do, and you probably do a lot of them. I did a lot of them!

Eat at least five servings of organic (which inherently means non-GMO, too) fruits and vegetables (mostly vegetables) a day, locally sourced/ in season if possible, especially cruciferous and bitter veggies.

Cut all processed foods. Mind your weight.

Don’t smoke, if you eat meat get grass fed and finished, pasture-raised, if possible, and don’t grill it. (Read Animal Liberation). Make your own cleaners and buy organic cosmetics and natural deodorants. Get an organic pillow for your bed. Never use plastic in the microwave (or skip microwaving all together!) Test your water. Know your families health history – get it together now – both sides, as back as far as anyone can remember. If something repeats (lots of cancer or heart attacks in your history) read all you can about prevention.

Eat an organic apple and raw carrots every day. Get pH strips and use them. Take curcumin and reishi mushroom supplements. Eat white mushrooms as often as possible. Keep learning and exploring. Find doctors who care about your health, and who give you advice, even when you don’t ask for it. If you are worried about breast cancer, and maybe everyone should be, I like Dr. Mercola’s advice: Google “Mercola top tips to reduce your breast cancer risk.”

Make sure you have good insurance.

Buy a good juicer.

Read books on cancer treatments.

Figure out what’s available and what you believe in. Because once you get the diagnosis, you are in the storm. Learning to work in the rain is hard. There’s no time.

Wonderful Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses Every single caretaker I have met has been not just kind, but capable and downright lovable. The field seems to be full of skilled, compassionate people. Another positive note is that there is a lot of information on the web (but it takes time to find it). And there are many many books. Read as many as you can. Your knowledge will assuredly help someone, and maybe that someone will be you (I hope not).

During Radiation Amazingly, I’ve found that there is debate about what is safe to do during radiation. I want to take antioxidant supplements, but there is concern among my healthcare providers that antioxidants might reduce the effectiveness of the radiation. It is OK, I’ve been told, to eat antioxidant-rich foods

though, so I do that. Based on my research, I plan to argue with them about the supplements, as well.

What I currently do is put maca in my morning smoothies for energy. I do arm exercises to try to avoid lymphodema.

During radiation, I visualize my healthy cells popping up tiny umbrellas to protect themselves, while cancer cells lay out on their beach towels! Right before radiation, I visualize my skin temporarily turning to mesh, to let the radiation pass through (radiation causes the breast to shrink, become harder, darker, and leathery. Lovely. My own built in catcher’s mitt.)

Calendula lotion is recommended; I keep it in my purse and schmear it on as soon as I get back in the dressing room after radiation. I also use other lotions throughout the day, including aloe vera and Medicine Mama’s Bee Magic.

I take 600 mg of silymarin, a probiotic, and 20 mg of melatonin daily. I have a spoonful of Nature’s Way organic raw coconut and a spoonful of chawanprash daily.

(Garden of Light in Avon carries chawnaprash – I haven’t checked Whole Foods.) I have a spoonful of honey before radiation, another spoonful as soon as I get home, and a third spoonful 6 hours later. I also have a spoonful of manuka honey a day. I eat a lot of protein (mostly beans).

I meditate most days – sometimes for just a few minutes but I do it. I will forevermore spring for reishi mushroom capsules (which might have prevented it if I’d taken them all along, FYI). I drink organic green tea with lemon.

Be Better...

I exercise (brisk walking usually) 30 minutes most days, and when I can possibly make time I have a Epsom salt lukewarm bath, with baking soda and organic lavender essential oil. And I do oil pulling.

There are so many more therapies – I plan to explore them and hope you will, too. One interesting site is http://www.lifeextension. com/Protocols/Cancer/Radiation-Therapy/Page-07.

I’m looking into the following alternative therapies, and will run them by my doctor. Pentoxifylline, EFAs, taurine and L-arginine; gauze soaked in 10 percent N-acetylcysteine; vitamins A, C and E, N-acetylcysteine; glutamine, and glutathione; CoQ10 (200 mg); Sodium selenite; and selenium.

I hope you’ll tell your sisters – and your brothers – to do their BSEs! I pray you never have to go through any of this, but if you do, please work with your doctors and caregivers, ask every question you can think of, and do your own research. Every case is different, every doctor is different, and new information comes on-line every day.

Hotel de Chimayo: Woven in Time and Tradition

W

e arrived at the Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe, which can be found in the heart of downtown Santa Fe half a block from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. The unique heritage of the nearby Spanish colonial town of Chimayo is apparent as you step through the lobby, complete with wall weavings created with the traditional wool and techniques from the 1700’s, and into the long “plaza” beyond.

The town of Chimayo, NM is located about 30 minutes north of Santa Fe and was constructed with a traditional fortified central plaza. The original Chimayo community heritage and spiritual dedication is readily apparent throughout the property. As we walked through the plaza where the rooms are located, we passed on either side, the buildings where the rooms are located painted in traditional earth tones, bunches of dried red chili peppers hanging from balconies, and a large wooden cross at the far end of the plaza – all reminiscent of 17th century Chimayo. The theme continues in the 56 spacious rooms and suites, which feature beautiful Chimayo designs and artwork from local artists. Many of the rooms have exposed beams providing a rustic flavor to the rich setting you will enjoy here.

We stayed in the warm and inviting Mission King Suite, tastefully decorated in traditional colors and fabrics by some of the 70 Chimayo artists that contributed their talents to the hotel’s design theme.

Our room had a wood-burning fireplace, which can be started for you by the attentive staff. The L-shaped couch was a perfect location to enjoy the warmth of the fire while enjoying a glass of wine.

Keeping with the spiritual theme, handmade crosses made from sticks and held together with rope adorn many of the walls.

As you look at the front of the hotel, there is a large front patio porch where you can relax in the dry air while trying some authentic New Mexican food and drinks. We loved Estevan Restaurant, which 32

sources its ingredients from the Santa Fe farmers market, inspired by the flavors of northern New Mexico, and is known for its delicious Chimayo Chile. Adjacent to the lobby is the Low ‘n Slow Lowrider Bar tastefully decorated with a mix of stamped metal and wood, accented with vintage hub caps that are proudly displayed near the bar.

Also don’t miss the Anasazi Restaurant in the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi next door to Hotel Chimayo. Traditional Southwestern cuisine serves as the foundation for the Anasazi Restaurant’s menus, which include regional Latin influences that enrich the time-honored fare and celebrate Santa Fe’s vibrant Latin Communities. The hotel’s Executive Chef, Juan Bochenski found inspiration in Santa Fe’s rich culinary history, as well as ingredients that he finds locally. We tried the Spanish eggs benedict and the Green Chile Breakfast Burrito – both were delicious.

The two-story penthouse is over 3,000 square feet complete with in-room spa and dining services and 5 balcony terraces offering spectacular views of the city. The Inn is adjacent to Loretto Chapel, built on the former site of the Loretto of Light Academy.

We had a chance to tour the chapel with its famed “miraculous staircase” named because the identity of its builder is unknown and for the physics of its construction. The chapel, which was completed in the latter half of the 1800’s, had no access to the choir loft perched more than 20 feet above the ground floor. Because of the small area below, there wasn’t enough room to build traditional stairs. One day a carpenter offered his services to resolve the issue by constructing a spiral type staircase to minimize its footprint.

When the work was completed, he disappeared without payment or goodbyes. The magnificent staircase has two 360-degree turns, no support connections to any wall, and no use of nails – wooden pegs were utilized instead.

The Inn boasts on-site art galleries, shops, and a garden. The modern and sophisticated rooms are decorated in Native American Santa Fe style - many with a red, black, and tan color palette. Our bed was plush with luxurious bedding and traditional woven fabric accents. Other amenities you might not expect are a heated pool, concierge services, fitness room, 24-hr business center, laundry and dry cleaning services, complimentary daily newspaper, valet parking, and outdoor firepit. Deceiving People Into Health

M

any years ago one of our children brought home a canvas he had decorated in his school art class. He had filled the entire canvas with the word ‘words’. As a surgeon what immediately struck me was that you can kill or cure with a sword, or scalpel, but you can also kill or cure with words when wordswordswords become swordswordswords. Physicians are not taught how to communicate with patients and due to their fear of being sued, tell people all of the adverse side effects of therapy and never mention the benefits. Every time I hear a TV commercial mentioning how the pill being advertised can kill you I wonder why anyone would try it.

I began to realize how important a patient’s beliefs were from my experience and their experience and not their diagnosis. In a sense it is summed up by Dr. Milton Erickson writing in a patient’s chart and then excusing himself and stepping out of the office for a minute. When the patient peeked at the chart she saw, “Doing well” written there. How therapeutic.

I also learned to ask people how they would describe what they were experiencing versus their diagnosis. Then I would ask how and what in their lives fit those words if they were negative words.

The words they would share, like pressure describing her pain, or failure her cancer experience, led me to helping them eliminate the pressure in their life and what made them feel like a failure.

One day prior to performing minor surgery in my office, the patient and I got into an intense and interesting discussion. I picked up the scalpel while we were talking and made an incision. I noticed my nurse waving frantically at me. When she caught my attention she pointed at the syringe containing the local anesthetic which I had not used. I asked the patient how he was feeling and he was fine so I completed the surgery and then told him we were both hypnotized and that I had not used any local anesthetic to numb the area of surgery. Major surgery has been done under hypnosis and I have used hypnotherapists in the operating room too.

As I learned the power of words I began to pay more attention to what was said in the operating room. Simple things like changing an injection from feeling like a bee sting to a mosquito bite. When an anesthesiologist talked to the patient about their “going out,” I would ask the patient, “When was the last time you went out on a date.” I also played music in the O.R. decades ago and was con42

sidered an explosion hazard but when everyone felt better the staff stopped complaining. Today we have studies verifying the benefits of music in shortening the time of the surgery, requiring fewer drugs and patients experiencing less pain.

During surgery I would ask my patients not to bleed and divert the blood away from the area of surgery. I was not a normal surgeon but no one is against success so if it worked it became hospital policy for which I received no credit. Before they awakened from surgery I would say, “You will wake up comfortable, thirsty and hungry.” I had to change that to “but you won’t finish what is on your plate” when my patients all began to gain weight. I couldn’t get the administrators to use the TV in patients’ rooms to prepare them for surgery with guided imagery.

So believe in the mind-body unity and words. Our body responds to our beliefs and I’d rather lie therapeutically to a patient than give them a list of side effects of a treatment and induce all of them because of what they hear from an authority figure. When I did have to share some negative side effects I would add that they don’t happen to everyone; like everyone isn’t allergic to peanuts.
