Many people think that giving up or failing is the hard way out, but really it’s the easy way out. Growth of any type requires personal struggle, discipline and hard work. It requires belief and faith that you can achieve your goal even when you can’t see how it can possibly happen. In the midst of the challenges and uncertainties and in the face of obstacles and setbacks you need to keep moving forward, however tempting it might be to give up and let go of your dreams.

Today we live in an age of instant gratification. We want what we want right now. No delays. No substitutions. No excuses. We want immediate growth, instant mastery and flawless performance on our first attempt. But even as we read this, we know deep down that it’s not realistic, it doesn’t happen that way. And if it did, we wouldn’t appreciate it the way we do when we accomplish something we’ve worked really hard for.

My grandmother used to give me some excellent pieces of wisdom. She used to say, “You kids today expect success to happen overnight. In my day, we took our time and found joy in the mastery of a craft. Let it take as long as it takes.”

This helped me to understand that anything worthwhile in life requires time, patience and persistence. Speed is irrelevant to perseverance.

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. Steady perseverance, patient endurance, the achievement of a little every day, is of more value than the overly aggressive rushing forward and the enthusiastic endeavor of the emotional and temperamental person.

As long as you are willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes, no one will be able to prevent you from reaching your goal.

So every time you think, “This is never going to happen, I’ll never reach that goal, I can’t handle one more obstacle,” remember that the most successful people in the world were in the same place you are, on the cusp of accomplishing their wildest dreams. And why are they the most successful people? Because in that moment in time when they almost gave up, they decided to take one more step, to try one more time, to give it one more day and that’s all it took.

The tanks contain 10 inches of water so saturated with Epsom salts that they are more buoyant than the dead sea.

I

have been counseling cancer patients in support groups and individually for over thirty years and it has been very therapeutic for me too, as I try to live the sermon. What got me started on my journey of enlightenment was one of my patients. We were both at a workshop, which I thought was intended for physicians, but only three were there amongst over a hundred patients. She said to me, “You’re a nice guy. I feel better when I am in the office with you but I can’t take you home with me. So I need to know how to live between office visits.”

She shifted me from feeling helpless about not being able to cure every patient to feeling that I could help them all to live. So I sent a hundred letters out to our cancer patients inviting them to join a group and “live a longer, healthier life.” I was in a panic expecting they would bring friends and relatives with cancer and I would have hundreds of people to work with. I realized I didn’t know my patients and their will to live when less than a dozen women came to the first group session.

What I began to learn is that there is a survivor personality. Psychiatrist Dr. George Solomon calls it an immune competent personality from his work with AIDS patients. I will share the qualities of these people shortly. First, I began to see that if you helped people to live they didn’t die when they were supposed to. I have shared, in my books, about some of these people whose disease disappeared and whom doctors call spontaneous remissions.

In his book Cancer Ward, Solzhenitsyn, who had cancer himself, helped me to wake up with his description of these cases. He writes about the men sitting around the ward and one of them has a medical textbook that he reads from, “It says here there are cases of self induced healing, not recovery through treatment but actual healing... see.” It was as though self induced healing fluttered out of the great open book like a rainbow colored butterfly for everyone to see, and they all held up their cheeks for its healing touch as it flew past. It

was only the gloomy Podduyev who, with a hopeless and obstinate expression on his face, croaked out, “I suppose for that you need to have a clear conscience.”

I think he says all we need to know about self-healing with his symbols. Yes, you need a clear conscience related to your past and life and he tells you how to achieve it. The butterfly is the symbol of transformation and the rainbow is every color that represents our life’s emotions. When our emotions are in order we can heal.

The first reaction I received from other doctors was that I was creating guilt and blame by bringing up people’s lives when they had cancer. Yes, in my books I ask questions like what has happened in the last year or two of your life, what does the disease mean to you, how do you benefit from your illness, why do you need an illness and do you want to live to be one hundred? I didn’t grow up with guilt, blame and shame so I truly did not appreciate what other people were feeling. I was on all the famous talk shows discussing and explaining the issue. For some people death is preferable to life and for others the only way for them to get attention is to be sick.

What I have learned from my life and that of my patients is that you cannot separate your life from your health. Monday we have more heart attacks, strokes, suicides and illnesses. Going home to a house with a dog after having a heart attack reduced the mortality rate at the end of twelve months, in one study, from 26% to 5%.

Women with the same cancers as men live longer and married men live longer than single men with the same cancers. It is not female hormones and sleeping with them that is protective; it is our connections and relationships that are significant.

Our internal chemistry relates to our feelings. In his book The Biology of Belief, geneticist Bruce Lipton talks about genes and the fact that they do not make decisions. Identical twin sisters do not get the same disease on the same day. The sister more likely to develop breast cancer is the good girl, who pleases her parents and others and internalizes her anger and not her little devil of a twin. To quote a patient, “My mother’s words were eating away at me and maybe gave me cancer.” She had to get cancer to start living and buy a red dress since her mother only dressed her in dark colors so she wouldn’t be noticed and embarrass the family.

As science has opened its mind we are seeing studies demonstrating the truth in these statements. A recent study at UCLA showed that people who felt lonely activated the genes that controlled immune system activity. Loneliness was related to feelings of isolation and separation, and not about how many people you knew but your lack of closeness to anyone. These people were more likely to develop autoimmune disorders, viral infections and cancer. So you can see how loss affects the surviving spouse and family members. Other studies done in the past by Dr. Caroline Thomas, at Johns Hopkins, showed medical students who had a low closeness to parent profile were more likely to develop cancer later in life and a recent Harvard study showed that almost 100% of students who felt unloved by their

parents had experienced a major illness by midlife, while 28% of those who felt loved had experienced a major illness. Many years ago Jungian Elida Evans wrote that cancer was growth gone wrong and was a message for the patient to take a new path in life.

I understand that what she is saying is about how to turn a curse into a blessing. We need to be born again. Every therapy tells us this fact. In AA they say, “Fake it till you make it.” I have been asking people to learn to act as if they were survivors because we know that actors’ immune function and stress hormone levels are altered in a negative way when acting in a tragedy and in a positive way when in a comedy. The disease can become our teacher by awakening us to our mortality and truly beginning to live our unique and authentic lives. And when you do, you will exceed the expectations of physicians who are only looking at statistics instead of the individual and their experience.

So cancer can be hell or a wake up call and a new beginning.

Please understand I am not talking about immortality or saying that death is a failure. I am talking about living your chocolate ice cream and its associated benefits. This includes deciding about treatment options and more. As I have said, it is about the labor pains of rebirthing one’s self.

If you have information that concerns you, make sure you let your doctor know and pursue appropriate tests to verify your inner wisdom. Guided imagery can also stimulate your body and help you to heal. You can read my books to get information about the techniques involved.

Here is a list of questions so you can see if you have the survivor personality qualities. Here are the questions based on Dr. George Solomon’s research.

If you answer no to the first seven questions and yes to the last two you need attention 1. Do I have a sense of meaning in my work, daily, activities, family and relationships?

2. Am I able to express anger appropriately in defense of myself?

3. Am I able to ask friends and family for support when I am feeling lonely or troubled?

4. Am I able to ask friends or family for favors when I need them?

5. Am I able to say no to someone who asks for a favor if I can’t or don’t feel like doing it?

6. Do I engage in health related behaviors based on my own self defined needs instead of someone else’s prescriptions or ideas?

7. Do I have enough play in my life?

8. Do I find myself depressed for long periods during which time I feel hopeless about ever changing the conditions that cause me to be depressed?

9. Am I dutifully filling a prescribed role in my life to the detriment of my own needs?

What they are asking you is about who decides how your life’s time is spent. You can lose your life by pleasing others. Nurses often have a problem with question number 5. I have added three more questions to the list above: 1. I am taking you to dinner, what do you want?

2. What would you hold up before an audience to demonstrate the beauty and meaning of life?

3. How would you introduce yourself to God? If you answer number 1 within a few seconds it tells me you are in touch with your feelings and not thinking about what I want for dinner or how much money I want to spend. The answer to number 2 is a mirror; and for number 3 that you accept your divine nature and say to God, “Your child is here” or “It’s you” and not answer with your profession or say it’s me and separate yourself from the divine.

What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You

ccording to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 44. The risk of breast cancer at age 25 is less than one in 19,000, whereas by age 35 it is one in 217. Yet, the statistic people are most familiar with is that one in eight women will eventually develop breast cancer.

Identifying Reversible Risks Imagine a tool that could detect early changes in the breast that could lead to cancer. This tool would see these risks years before they would be found by other screening tools. Now consider that if these risks were found early, you could reverse them by changing your diet, removing toxins and naturally balancing your hormones.

This is exactly what Medical Infrared Thermography does and more than 800 research citings support it.

If you have never heard of breast thermography, I would not be surprised. After decades of evolving and battling through layers of opposition, breast thermography is still one of the most misunderstood technologies in medicine. It is not uncommon that the medical community will vehemently oppose any technology or new test for decades before they accept and embrace its value. In the meantime, the public will not know about breast thermography or, worst case, will be discouraged from using it.

A 50-Year History and FDA Approval Breast thermography has been around for more than 50 years, and the FDA approved the first medical thermography system more than 20 years ago. Medical Infrared Thermography (MIT) provides a crucial entryway to preventive medicine as a method of controlling the diseases that we currently only recognize at advanced stages.

MIT Reveals Silent Warnings MIT uses an infrared camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from the body. Thermography reveals a fascinating and reliable pattern of thermal activity that discloses a silent warning. These patterns can see the root of such conditions as headaches, allergies, dental pathologies, carotid artery disease, breast cancer, digestive dysfunction, liver/gallbladder disease, musculoskeletal conditions, pain, and immune dysfunction. It is most well-researched for its ability to detect risk factors for breast cancer. While there have been hundreds of peer-reviewed studies to support its use as a screening tool, it has been mistakenly denied as lacking evidence as a diagnostic device. This is correct. Breast thermography is not diagnostic.

And that’s where the problem starts.

While it cannot be called a replacement for other types of screening it has many valuable advantages, including: earlier detection of suspicious patterns; an adjunct to inconclusive mammograms; improved detection for women with dense breasts or implants; and a reasonable alternative for women who refuse mammograms. What’s important is the earliest detection of risk, and breast thermography can do this.

The medical community opposes thermography mostly because of this statement by the AMA: “In view of the lack of sufficient proof of effectiveness, the use of thermography for diagnostic purposes cannot be recommended at this time.” There have been studies published in medical journals that show no benefit or accuracy for thermography – but they forgot to mention that the technology they tested was not the proven technology used by the thermography community, and that the studies they continue to refer to were done back in the 1980s when the most powerful computer was a Tandy 5000.

Updated U.S. Guidelines for Mammograms While thermography is not perfect, women have very little in the way of optimal screening for breast disease. What you may not have heard is that, in 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force updated guidelines for mammograms. Here is what they said: • The USPSTF recommends against routine screening mammography in women aged 40 to 49 years.

• The decision to start regular, biennial screening mammography before the age of 50 years should be an individual one and take into account patient context, including the patient’s values regarding specific benefits and harms.

• The USPSTF recommends biennial screening mammography for women between the ages of 50 and 74 years.

• The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the additional benefits and harms of screening mammography in women 75 years or older.

• The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the additional benefits and harms of clinical breast examination beyond screening mammography in women 40 years or older.

The Pros and Cons of Annual Mammograms Basically, after the USPTF reviewed prevailing studies on mammograms, they concluded that there is little benefit of annual screening and it may lead to unnecessary risk such as radiation exposure as well as unnecessary or invasive medical treatment.

The controversy continued when another study published in Canada concluded that women in their 40s reap no benefit from mammography and have real risks of harm from unnecessary treatment.

They presented the latest results from a study of more than 90,000 Canadian women. Dr. Cornelia Baines of the University of Toronto was quoted as saying, ‘’After 13 years, the number of deaths was the same in the group that had mammograms and the group that had normal medical care.’’ In addition, she said mammography was finding some cancers that would never have been detected and would never have caused any problem if the women had not been screened. ‘’Some women were getting mastectomies that they didn’t need,’’ Dr. Baines said, and she added that there was no benefit for younger women. She concluded, ‘’I think the message should be accepted by all rational people.’’

After spending 10 years in integrative medicine, working with more than 5,000 patients and screening thousands of women with thermography, I would like to propose the most beneficial use of breast thermography. That is as a risk assessment tool. It is not in the realm of conventional medicine to prevent disease and reduce risk as much as it is to manage disease states. Therefore, it is up to those of us in Integrative Holistic Medicine to prevent disease, and we do it well. We reduce risks through diet, nutrition, supplements, herbals, and tools like acupuncture. Breast thermography only provides a doorway to restore health and balance; it does not detect or diagnose disease.

Here are six common misconceptions about breast cancer that every woman should be aware of: Misconception #1: Breast Cancer is a genetic disease The fact is that less than 3% of all breast cancers are genetic.

The higher risks are related to diet, lifestyle, illness, hormone issues, stress and environmental toxins. In fact, no studies have been done to indicate whether those with a family history can change the outcome by natural interventions such as lifestyle, diet, etc. There is a very new and exciting field of study called epigenetics which has discovered that we have control over our genes and can change them. So we are not ‘doomed’ because of our genes. In fact the controversy around genetic testing is now heating up due to Angelina Jolie’s very public announcement about her double-mastectomy. This is a topic for another day, as the discrepancies in genetic testing are quite lengthy.

Misconception #2: Breast Cancer is not preventable According to the American Cancer Society, 60% of all breast cancer is environmentally related. This means through detoxification and reduction of exposure to estrogens (which I do through corrective care integrative medicine in my clinic), you can significantly lower your risks. Since family history is such a low percentage of all cancers, we know there are numerous lifestyle and environmental links to the development of breast cancer.

Misconception #3: A normal mammogram means there is no cancer While the mammogram is still valuable for detecting cancer, it is important to know that most breast cancers take 8 to 10 years to develop. That means that while you may have had years of negative mammograms, there may be microscopic cells growing that will need to get to a significant size before they will be picked up in your annual screening. In fact, if a woman who has diligently gotten her annual mammograms is diagnosed with breast cancer, she had years of false negatives before it was detected. If she had a thermography screening it may have detected suspicious changes much earlier.

Misconception #4: Mammograms are harmless There are clearly risks from mammography that are rarely discussed and not well known by doctors. A recent 700-page report issued by the National Academy of Science confirms what we already know, that cumulative exposure to radiation poses serious health risks. Another study published in 2004 showed that the radiation exposure risk from mammograms may be five times higher than previously thought. This means that annual mammogram screening between the ages of 40 and 50 years old may increase one’s risk by 50%. Again, mammograms save lives so we have to evaluate risk vs. value.

Misconception #5: Medical Infrared Thermography has no research behind it For more than 20 years, Medical Infrared Thermography has been extensively studied. The overwhelming results concur that, as a screening tool, thermography has over a 90% predictive value of future breast issues. One of the

clearest studies tracked a group of 1527 women with initially normal mammograms and physical exams but abnormal thermograms for 12 years.

The study was stopped after only 5 years because 60% of the women had already developed malignancies.

Misconception #6: Medical Infrared Thermography should replace the mammogram This is not true. Mammography and thermography are two totally different tools. While mammography can evaluate structures in the breast, thermography evaluates the activity that may indicate risks. In some studies, the combination of both screening tools provided a 99% predictive indicator of breast disease. The FDA has recognized thermography as an adjunct to mammography. I feel that thermography gives a picture of breast health that mammography may not and it does it safely and effectively.

However, diagnostically, mammography has its rightful place.

What to Do if You Have an Abnormal Thermogram Each case is individual and the recommendations are unique to your case. However, you don’t necessarily have to get breast cancer. As I stated above, we know that finding early warning signs can be reversed. On many women I have screened, the heat patterns indicated only that they were at risk for developing breast disease in the future. When we take immediate action and create an individualized plan that includes review of diet, supplements and lifestyle, we often are able to see positive changes in three to five months.

Many alternative healthcare practitioners may be capable of guiding you in reversing the risks of breast cancer. You can check with your healthcare practitioner. The most important thing to know is that thermograms give you the early warning signs that can be reversed naturally. The earlier the detection, the easier it is. Merging Technologies One of the most common things I hear from women who are not sure about whether to get a thermogram is that they want to first check with their doctor. The problem with this is that 90% of doctors know nothing about the technology or the research to support it. The 14

other 10% are dealing with flawed and biased studies published in their peer-reviewed journals. The other little known fact is that even well-meaning doctors will stick only to “standard-of-care” procedures; those that are approved by their boards, because they risk fines, sanctions and even losing their license if they deviate from the accepted tools and methods. Unfortunately, history has proven that life-saving procedures and therapies can sometimes take decades to become accepted.

This does not have to be the case with Medical Infrared Thermography. There is no need for a doctor’s referral, there is no risk and it only enhances any other screening tools. In fact, one research study found that when MIT was combined with mammography, 95% of early stage cancers were detected!!

In the ideal world, Medical Infrared Thermography is a tool for the natural care practitioner. It does not exclude any other screenings. It is a safe and effective way to help us restore health to our patients. It is not intended to diagnose disease but to enhance our ability to help you achieve optimal health.

Where Does Religion and Spirituality Meet Medicine?

was having dinner a short time ago with a friend at a local restaurant. We get together infrequently to catch up on how our lives are going and to share details of family and events that have shaped our lives. Because we have known each other for years, the infrequent visits did nothing to interfere with the bond of friendship we had created over time. There was a comfort and openness in our conversation that seemed natural and made any subject we touched

on free territory. Or so I thought.

We shared stories about our children.

We touched on politics and the events of the day. We lamented the tragedies in the world that seemed to happen almost on a daily basis. There certainly was no shortage of subjects on which to share our opinions and emotions. All happening at a comfortable distance from our reality. And we seemed to agree on most everything.

But somehow, later in the evening, after dinner and two glasses of wine, the conversation turned to religion and the concepts of spirituality. I know I initiated the conversation because I had been on a quest for some time regarding religion, and the concept of God and life’s purpose, and I am always interested to hear someone else’s viewpoint.

Hearing her point of view was important to me. So I questioned.

I like to think I’m a good listener, and I hardly was in a position to impose my point of view, since I was still searching myself.

Where religion and spirituality fit into my life and certainly my medical practice was far from clear. After all, I had an intensely religious upbringing, yet it was precisely because of the intensity of training at such an early age, and the lack of relevance it seemed to carry into my practical day-to-day life in later years, that I grew apart from any concept of a “Maker,” or a “master plan,” or salvation. I even distanced myself from the belief of a God or heaven or hell. My years of intense religious training as a child had turned me into a true pagan, an atheist. A follower of no one. A believer in nothing.

And, in fact, my career for the next 30 years reinforced the fact that I was not in need of spiritual health or support, since my world had become the world of empirical science. I believed in evolution and not creation, since Darwin approached his theories

from a purely scientific point of view. My schooling led me to an inclination in the sciences and a comfort in the natural laws of physics and biology. The sciences led me, in college, to a pre-medical curriculum and a major in chemistry. What could be more purely scientific then chemistry, and of course, the absolute truth of the metabolic chemical pathways of energy creation that make muscles work. That path led me to medical school, and before long, I was a practicing physician, Western-medicine trained, and educated in all the evidencebased learning I could possibly fill my brain with.

My medical school taught me well, but I believe it taught me arrogance and not humility. By the time I was an intern and resident in the intensive care units of one of the most prestigious American hospitals in the country, I was convinced that I could, by virtue of my diploma, cure disease, heal the sick and relieve the world’s suffering. Not only did my medical training convince me that this was so, but the world at large also bestowed their confidence in me to do so, because America believed in my scientific Western-based training. I had a license to prescribe medicines to heal the sick. The more science I could learn, they made me believe, the more diseases I could cure, the more pain and suffering I could conquer, the better I could fulfill my mandate professed in that Hippocratic Oath I took at my medical school graduation.

I followed that path of Western scientific health care for 25 years. I believed that what I was doing was following the path to create the best healthcare possible for my patients; always scientific and evidence based. But for me, something changed, in a profound and irreversible way. The spark of change probably had its origin in my

own personal health issues. My epiphany came when I personally needed to confront a chronic illness that had no cure, whose intensity waxed and waned for no discernible reason, and at a very difficult time in my life, brought me to a point of fear that I might not ever entirely recover. I pondered death and suffering on a very personal level and no matter how many Western experts I sought out (and there were many), no one had the ‘answer’. My purely scientific foundation was shaken as I confronted my illness with fear and helplessness. During that time, I also found myself looking into the bigger picture of American health issues, and I realized how bad our report card for treating illness really is. Yes, we are great with some things, like the proper doses of drugs for infectious diseases, and we can be proud of our track record for managing trauma and acute cardiac diseases in our emergency rooms.

Yet we do so poorly with the epidemic of chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, inflammatory bowel disease and certainly cancer that I believe we have little to be proud about. Contrary to popular belief,

we simply do not have the best healthcare system in the world. If we did, we wouldn’t be 32nd in life expectancy compared to other countries. Our response to health preservation is prescription medicine and surgical cure. We Western-trained scientifically based practitioners have headed down a path that is far from entirely correct or meaningfully successful. What can we be missing? I believe that the answer is something simple but profound.

I continued my conversation about religion and my renewed spirituality with my friend during that dinner conversation.

I told her how poorly I thought I had been doing with my office conversations with my patients over the years. So rarely in the past 25 years did I bring up the conversation of religion or spirit or ask how my patients felt about their own mortality or where God fit into their lives. I told her that I had begun to open that door in my office visits with patients, never once imposing my personal newly found beliefs. I just opened the door so that if they wanted to talk about more than which pill I should be giving them to relieve their suffering, they could feel free to talk.

The response in my office was and continues to be completely awesome, humbling and very unexpected. Religion and spirituality are a huge part of people’s lives and they carry it into the doctor’s office in so many ways. Many times, people complain to the doctor of pain, but the pain is spiritual or existential, marital or relationship based, depression or tragedy based. The pain is not of the body, but of the soul. How often in the past have I prescribed pharmaceutical pain killers to treat the emotional pain of someone living through the trauma of marital abuse or the pain of seeking an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy, not having a clear understanding of the causes. My epiphany was that I had missed so much and I wondered what took me so long to figure all this out. Why was my healthcare mantra “the pill” or “the surgery” all the time?

Nowhere in my medical school was there a course on how to reach out and touch a patient’s soul. Nowhere was there training to help understand what role a person’s faith might play in dealing with their health issues. When I told my friend that I thought I had been missing the boat for years, I was amazed to get a response from her that this was not my territory. How dare I presume to enter into a patient’s spiritual realm. My job was to fix the body with science and leave the spiritual side of health and wellness within the private sanctuary of each person’s beliefs. This was neither my place to enter nor the directive that was conferred by my medical license.

But I can’t turn back. My training since medical school has led me on one path; the scientific path of treating the body. The path of chemistry, pharmacology, surgery, and evidence-based healthcare. My training has served me well, and I am sure I have helped my patients along the way. But I have learned with age that mine is not the only path to health and healing, and it can be very limiting when it comes to success or failure with patient care. I believe that in my efforts to treat the body I neglected the spirit. I also have found that when I open the door for patients to speak about what is truly on their minds, it frequently is the spirit that needs my attention. My medical training carries with it definite limitations. But my clear opinion after so many years of patient care is this: Not opening the door for conversation is incomplete medical care. If I never ask the question, I may never learn what really underlies my patient’s illness. With open-mindedness and humility, we scientific physicians need to remember that the very BEST health care requires attention to more than chemistry. It requires our attention to the body, the mind, and with equal importance, the Spirit.

The Human Papillomavirus...

A Silent Epidemic

M

ichael Douglas has shined a light on cancers caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)–a health issue considered by many to be a silent epidemic. In much the same way Rock Hudson put a different face on AIDS back in 1985, Michael Douglas has alerted us to what can happen if HPV goes undetected.

HPV has been found to be associated with several types of cancer: cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils). Each year, more than 21,000 HPV-associated cancers occur in women; cervical cancer is the most common. More than 12,000 HPV-associated cancers occur each year in men; oropharyngeal cancers are the most common.

HPV is a very common virus that is spread through sexual contact including skin-to-skin contact and French kissing. HPV causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer and only regular PAP smear exams can make sure you have a healthy cervix.

The HPV infection is most common for women, with 79% of women contracting at least one infection in their lifetime. Approximately 60% to 70% of these cases are temporary and will resolve spontaneously within two years due to the host’s immune response to the virus. Accordingly, some clinicians prefer to do nothing except observe. However, during this watch-and-wait period, women need to curtail their sexual lives or increase the risk of transmission of HPV to their partners. Women also should consider that roughly 16,000 new cases of invasive cancer of the cervix and 5,000 deaths are reported each year in the U.S. Consequently, it is important to take a Cervical Dysplasia diagnosis seriously.

Presently, the management of active HPV (warts), latent HPV, or HPV with genital neoplasia or premalignant lesions of cervix has not been adequately controlled with Western medicine therapy.

The Center for Disease Control has responded with two vaccines to help eradicate the most damaging viruses. These HPV vaccines are given as a series of three shots over six months. The two vaccines (Cervarix and Gardasil) protect against cervical cancers in women.

One vaccine (Gardasil) also protects against genital warts and cancers of the anus, vagina and vulva. Both vaccines are available for females.

Only Gardasil is available for males.

These vaccines are relatively new to the scene (2006) and many fear long-term side effects. Existing side effects include dizziness after the injection, blood clots in the legs (deep venous thromboses), blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary emboli), and strokes. Seizures, kidney failure and a neurologic disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome also are possible side effects. Fortunately, these serious side effects are very rare, occurring in less than 1% of patients who receive the vaccine.

Western medicine names the following as factors that may increase your risk of Cervical Displasia: • Going long periods without getting a PAP Smear • Having multiple sexual partners • Having other illnesses or using medications that suppress your immune system • Smoking • Becoming sexually active before age 18 Doctors aren’t exactly sure why becoming sexually active before 18 puts women at greater risk but they think it might be because a woman is then more likely to have multiple partners, a risk factor in itself.

Interestingly, this fact is in harmony with the Traditional Chinese Medicine view that sexual activity at an early age is very detrimental to a girl’s body. According to Giovanni Maciocia, “Adolescence is a very vulnerable time in the life of a girl and any cause of disease at this age has serious consequences.”

So, do we vaccinate our 11-year-olds to protect them from the threat of HPV that may become a health issue when they reach middle age (about 39 years old) or do we do things today to take control of our own health? That is a very personal decision. There are options.

The Brain-Gut Connection and the Impact of Food

h no you’re late!!! You have 10 minutes to get to an important meeting with a boss you have a tenuous relationship with. You jump in your car and attempt to make up some time. Your thinking is sharper, your vision is clearer and your hearing is crisper. Your pores dilate, and your pulse becomes stronger and faster as you hurl down the highway. You feel butterflies in your stomach as blood is diverted from your gut to your lizard brain, which perceives the situation as a fight or flight moment. We all have experienced similar situations.

Is there any doubt that our brain has an impact on our body and gut? Now imagine the stress of being in a bad relationship for years, or perhaps it’s years of financial hardship, and how these situations impact our gut. The impact of our brain on our gut is well established, but the relationship is a two-way street.

Our Evolution Our central nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and the enteric nervous system, a system of nerves that coordinates the function of the digestive tract, also known as our second brain.

All of these nervous-system components actually are created from the same fetal tissue. The vagus nerve forms the direct line of communication between the gut and the brain. As humans evolved, we developed complex sensory organs such as our ears, eyes, and nose, to respond to our environment. Our gut also is a complex sensory organ, responding to the outside world via the food we eat. Just as we are emotionally affected by the visual beauty we see, the music we hear and the savory aromas we smell, we are similarly affected by the food we eat.

Nutrients that Impact Gut Health Nutrients impact the health of our gut, our brain, and the communication between the two organs. For example, B vitamins and folic acid are important cofactors in the production of neurotransmitters that are responsible for cellular signaling and communication. Deficiencies may predispose us to depression and may even 20

cause a blunted response to antidepressant medications. Essential fatty acids from fish oil provide structural support to nerve tissues, without which we are more predisposed to many mental conditions. Chromium is a mineral that stabilizes symptoms of depression like carbohydrate cravings and increased appetite due to its impact on blood sugar regulation. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoEnzyme Q-10 play a key role in the prevention and treatment of depression by protecting our brain and neurotransmitters.

The first line of defense among naturopathic physicians is to identify suspected nutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies through lab work or specialized cellular testing. Patients with memory loss, depression or poor sleep may actually suffer from insufficient nutrients. Organic GMO-free foods are strongly encouraged as they provide a higher concentration of nutrients.

Food is Medicine or Poison Food can be our best medicine, but food also can be our poison. Reactions to food can cause inflammation and immediate symptoms such as cramping, bloating, and changes in stool. Some people also might experience delayed reactions such as fogginess, poor concentration, anxiety and depression. Common reactive foods include corn, soy, wheat, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish. Proteins such as casein and gluten have been found to have opioid or morphine-like effects on the brain. It is believed that autistic children may feel dazed due to these morphine effects.

The Brain-Gut Connection It is still unclear how casein and gluten proteins get to the brain.

The leaky-gut theory suggests that the junctions that exist between cells in the gut become eroded. These junctions normally hold the gut wall together and mediate the passage of large molecules like casein and gluten. Once eroded, the wall can no longer act as a barrier against large molecules slipping into the bloodstream.

A recent study compared MRI images of celiac-disease patients who experience balance disturbances, headaches and sensory loss against a control group. The cerebellum was significantly smaller in the celiac patients, and an astounding 36% of them had white matter abnormalities. These findings demonstrate a significant correlation between the brain and the gut.

Plant pigments like quercetin and curcumin can be used to decrease reactivity and inflammation in the gut, while the amino acid glutamine and the hormone melatonin help to rebuild the gut.

Maldigested foods, antibiotics, steroids, aspirin, heavy metals, components of vaccines, yeast and bacterial overgrowth will all increase the permeability of the intestinal wall causing an increased immune response and inflammation.

A basic principal of naturopathic medicine is treating the whole person. This makes naturopaths well suited to deal with a complicated body system like the gut-brain axis. For example, we prescribe homeopathic remedies based on physical and emotional symptoms. The remedy Calcarea Carbonica treats patients who have difficulty assimilating information and demonstrate cautiousness, obstinacy, introversion, slow digestion and constipation. Bacteria and flora found in the digestive tract are essential to digest food, produce essential vitamins and process and eliminate chemicals and hormones. The health of our bacteria can relate directly to how we feel. Gut bacteria can exert a beneficial effect on the brain by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. But an intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or dysbiosis, is implicated in conditions like IBS, poor sleep and depression. Studies show that early in development, gut microbes affect the wiring of nerves in the stress system, influencing how our bodies react to stress for the rest of our life. The most effective way to assess dysbiosis is through stool sampling. There are specific herbs that control pathogenic bacteria, while probiotics can repopulate the gut with beneficial flora.

Chemicals in Our Brain Some patients with brain-related symptoms may require neurotransmitter testing. Dopamine, glutamate, serotonin, norepinephrine, and nitric oxide are all neurotransmitters found in both the gut and brain. There also are more than 30 different chemicals called neuropeptides at work. Serotonin, for example, is key in contracting muscles of our digestive system but is also commonly considered a brain hormone because of its involvement in mood control, depression and aggression. Interestingly, the highest concentrations of serotonin in our body are actually found in our gut.

Research has found that dieters tend to become depressed and constipated about two weeks into a diet, right around the time when serotonin levels drop. Low-calorie diets can decrease serotonin production and receptors. Patients can supplement with a combination of amino acids and specific herbs to normalize neurotransmitter levels.

Breast Cancer and the Mind-Body Relationship

hen a patient walks into my office and tells me she has breast cancer my first thoughts are always sympathetic and compassionate, but my second thoughts might surprise you. Since cancer-support modalities are so well researched and disseminated within the naturopathic community, I am always incredibly hopeful and excited about how much I have to share.

Breast cancer support is particularly well documented in all stages— from diagnosis, through recovery—as well as that all-important healing year after treatment. While the positive impact of different types of support varies from patient to patient, I do find that certain protocol suggestions consistently make a difference. They fall into the categories of mind/body, food, supplements, and most critically, detoxification (better known as “taking out the trash”).

I remember sitting in one of my very first cancer conference lectures years ago, listening to an explanation about a study that had been done on the positive impact of meditation and reduced cancer reoccurrence. The research had been done over a period of eight years and followed three groups that were recovering from cancer.

One group did not meditate, one group started meditating daily at the onset of the study, and the last group had meditated for many years before the study started.

The results were startling in that both groups that meditated had markedly lower cancer reoccurrence than the non-meditators. My first thoughts were skeptical at best, but as the years passed, I went to more lectures about the impact of mind/body on cancer and started reading even more studies. The original results I had seen years ago were replicated over and over. I wondered, “OK, if the meditators had low reoccurrence, why did the long-term meditators get cancer in the first place?” Then I thought, “Does that matter?

What matters is that it has been proven that meditation makes a statistically significant difference in the lives of patients recovering from cancer.”

The bottom line is this: search for a meditation practice that resonates with you. Explore the topic. If one type of meditation bores you, or makes you feel agitated, move on, don’t give up. I often recommend starting with Deva Premal; her website, devapremal.com, has 21, 15-minute guided meditations that are short and soothing. I like healthjourneys.com as well for their wellness CDs and illness recovery meditations.

As a cancer patient, food is a constant topic. Are you eating enough? How is your weight? Are you eating the right foods (what does that mean)? Eat more (of what?). Eat less (of what?). Eat organic (everything or just certain foods?). Drink better quality water (which is what)? Juice (how and what?). Yes, what you put in your body to nourish it is important, but the data out there is overwhelming, even on a good day! Start with the mindset that you are going to gradually explore new things. Familiarize yourself with the dirty dozen, which is a list of fruits and veggies that hold on to more pesticides than other fruits and veggies and are therefore best eaten organically grown. I do believe in juicing, but before you run out and buy a juicer, try some fresh-juiced veggies from a local health food store if you can. I often recommend The Complete Book of Juicing by Michael Murray (available on Amazon.com) so you can get an idea of what to juice and why. Try to explore ways to avoid processed sugars—fructose, glucose, and corn sugars. They negatively affect how the immune system responds to disease, so finding options sweetened with Stevia are worth looking into.

Supplements can be just as formidable a topic as food. Quality among types and brands is so variable; I find this is an area where seeking professional support is recommended. Research on specific supplements that produce positive effects on breast cancer recovery

is strongest for green tea (decaffeinated in pill form), omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics (although this is contraindicated if you have a low white count, which often is the case during chemo), curcumin, resveratrol, and vitamin D. All of these are not necessarily warranted for everyone, but there are a lot of very well-run studies supporting that these supplements can improve the health of a high percentage of patients who have had breast cancer. Be cautious and open minded when taking supplements. Start them one at a time and start with low doses. Pay attention to how you feel and don’t hesitate to stop and move on to something else if it just doesn’t feel that it’s working for you.

Lastly, and most importantly, is the taking-out-the-trash piece.

We all certainly have ‘things’ in our lives that we need to clean up, clear out, work through. Exploring mind/body modalities, eating well, and taking supplements specific to your disease all help with this, but their effect is made more potent when you understand that there is trash to be taken out in the first place. As humans, many of us hold tight to things—physically, mentally and spiritually—and that needs to be respected. But sometimes we take in some trash and hold on to that as well. A gentle, loving search needs to be done to see if there are things that can be released and unwound. I have often seen this step be a very powerful part of starting the path to long-term wellness.

I understand that breast cancer patients feel completely overwhelmed by all of the data being thrown at them. In my practice, I have never seen any patient that isn’t. The key is to try just a few things at a time, breathe, and be aware that, given time, small steps and small changes can make big differences.

Have You Done Your Yearly Detox?

A

s more people become aware of the increasing amount of environmental toxins in our lives the need for detoxification becomes more apparent. We are bombarded by toxins from many sources, including water, air, food, medicines, cosmetics, and cleaning supplies.

Our bodies also naturally produce metabolic waste which, if not broken down and eliminated, lingers in the body. Our bodies are capable of handling much of this but we can reach a point that puts us over the edge, depending on individual exposure, genetics, and general state of health. The channels of elimination include the liver, lymphatics, bowels, kidneys, lungs and skin.

Symptoms of Toxic Overload Some of the common symptoms of toxins not being eliminated properly are headaches, skin rashes, fatigue, digestive disorders, weight gain, brain fog, difficulty

sleeping, sinus congestion, food cravings, achy joints, and reduced libido. Often, environmental toxins can be someone’s primary barrier to healing and resolving their health challenges.

A 2004 study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found an average of 287 toxins in blood samples of newborns.

The babies acquired the toxins from the mother during pregnancy. The study has since been updated in 2009 to reveal an increase in toxic load.

Toxic Cosmetics The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2008 “Teen Body Burden Study” found an average of thirteen cosmetic chemicals in the bodies of teenage girls, some of which are known hormone disruptors. The same hormone disruptors have been found in the umbilical blood of newborns. A 2008 report in the journal “Pediatrics” reported a study which for the first time revealed infants are exposed to potent reproductive

toxins called phthalates from everyday baby products, including shampoo, lotion and powder. EWG states that cosmetic companies aren’t required to test their products for safety before they are sold, and that because federal laws contain no safety standards for cosmetics, it is legal for companies to use ingredients that are reproductive toxins, like phthalates, carcinogens and other potentially harmful substances.

Toxins Overwhelm Our Bodies The onslaught of toxins in our environment and food supply can completely overwhelm and exhaust our bodies. Fatsoluble toxins typically will integrate into the fatty tissues including the myelin sheath (a protective fatty layer surrounding nerves) causing interference with normal nerve impulses. Toxins also bind to any fatty tissue surrounding organs, interrupting cellular function and leading to inflammation, which leads to disease.

Some Detox Programs are Inadequate The need for detoxification is obvious.

However, a detoxification program must be safe as well as purifying and should nourish the body. Whole-food supplements and specific herbs support the natural process of detoxification. They eliminate the gap between the nutrition the body demands and the nutrition we can supply from available food sources. This is where many cleanses may fall short as they fail to deliver the whole-food nutrition which is needed to safely remove toxins from the body.

The lack of whole-food nutrition means that these cleanses typically support phase one of liver detoxification and fail to support the liver through the crucial second phase of the detoxification. During phase one of liver detox, toxins are essentially packaged up and redistributed to various parts of the body; it is in phase two that they are eliminated from the body.

A detoxification program should not be based on deprivation and starvation. In fact you should be able to eat real food and plenty of it.

Detoxification can occur in as little as three weeks while some programs may take about two months. Due to the increase in environmental toxins in our daily lives and the lack of nutrition in many of our food sources, a yearly detoxification program is something we all need to do to achieve great health and vitality.

NUTMEG “NUGGETS” Autumn: The Third Season of Life (Aka The Diamond), The Sacred Science of the 52 Playing Cards and Numerology

T

he fascinating truth about the Common Deck of 52 Playing Cards is that they were never spiritually meant to be ‘played with’! They were actually intended to be our Calendar System that is intimately connected to our Life here on Planet ‘Earth’. Playing Cards are esoteric symbols and everything about them symbolizes something. The ‘suits’ represent the four seasons, the grand cycle of birth, growth, maturity and death. The Autumnal season is the third ‘suit’ following Spring (Hearts), Summer (Clubs), and preceding Winter (Spades). In the Autumn season or the Suit of Diamonds, we are harvesting the fruits of our efforts, reaping the riches we have sown in the soil of our lives. It is in the Autumn Season of life that we generally accumulate wealth and property. Diamonds coincide with the element of Earth and the suit of Pentacles in the Tarot. The most common meaning of Diamonds is money, though on a deeper level, they represent what we most value in life. Those born as a Diamond Card work out their Karma with money and values. In our journey through time, Diamonds represent the manifestation of our passion and what we have learned, so, therefore the Autumn Season is action-oriented!

October is the 10th month of the year; according to the Metaphysics of Numerology. The 10 is a number that asks us to learn lessons of a higher order; it is the ‘1’ + the ‘0’; the ‘1’ represents initiation, beginning a new value (diamond) system perhaps? • Offer to be a messenger or spokesperson – to pass along updates to friends.

• Offer to help write thank you notes.

• Offer to do things which regularly would be the responsibility of the caregiver –- often they are stressed out and overwhelmed as well.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month What is a Thermogram?

A

thermogram, or as it is also called, Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, is an FDA approved method of measuring patterns of heat emitted from the body. In relation to breast cancer, a thermogram detects angiogenesis which is the growth of new blood vessels. These new blood vessels feed a tumor and they show up as higher temperature in breast tissue.

What is the difference between a thermogram and a mammogram?

First, these are two entirely different methods of screening for breast cancer and thermograms in no way replace mammograms. Mammograms detect structure or anatomy such as a tumor; thermograms detect a process or physiology like inflammation or angiogenesis.

Second, mammograms use radiation and compression; thermograms use neither – so there is no damage to fragile, cellular DNA and there is no risk from radiation (and even though mammograms use low radiation, There Is No Safe Low Radiation).

Third, thermograms view a larger area (all the way up parallel to and under the arm pit) which is one of the reasons why they have a better detection rate.

Fourth and most importantly, because thermograms detect the growth of new blood cells, they detect cancerous conditions in the breast up to 8 years before a mammogram can detect a tumor. So since no one knows how to prevent cancer, early detection seems to be your best chance for overcoming this dreaded disease.

Optimizing Prenatal Care

T

he decision to have a baby is one of the most joyous ones you can make, and once the choice is made, the excitement escalates. You begin to imagine the nursery—“Blue? Pink? Green?”

You pay closer attention to baby names—“Hunter? Skyler? Olivia?”

—and debate the merits of “Grandma” vs. “Nana.” But how much time and thought do you devote to what happens before the baby arrives, or even before that new life is conceived?

A Year of Preconception Planning A woman’s body is a baby’s first true home, and the health and safety of that abode can set the stage for a lifetime of wellness.

Moms (and Dads) who have disruptions in their immune, digestive or detoxification systems, whether from external influences or genetic anomalies, would be wise to address these issues well before conception to lay the groundwork for a healthy child. Preconception planning is best begun a year to six months before conception and includes foundational principles as well as individualized diet and lifestyle changes.

Stopping Birth Control Once the decision is made, the obvious next step is to stop using birth control. If oral contraceptives are the method used, it is important to wait a minimum of three and ideally six months to conceive. Not only must normal hormonal regulation be reestablished, but certain nutrients must be replenished. Birth control pills often deplete B-complex vitamins, which are essential for normal fetal growth and development, especially in the first trimester, so it is crucial to replenish these before conception.

Omega-3 Supplements Prospective moms are routinely advised to avoid certain fish, such as swordfish, sea bass, shark, and orange roughy during pregnancy, due to the toxic effects of mercury on the developing fetus.

Paradoxically, while fish must be consumed carefully and sparingly to avoid heavy-metal contamination, good quality omega-3 fatty acids are needed for normal brain development. One type of essential fatty acid, DHA, is the primary structural compound in the brain. It is especially important during pregnancy and the first year of life, when brain growth is most rapid. Taking a good quality fish oil, free from heavy metals and PCBs, is a prudent choice in preparation for pregnancy.

Important Nutrients Other surprising foods can be a boon to prenatal health. Eggs from clean, antibiotic- and hormone-free poultry provide important nutrients such as brain-building choline and fat soluble vitamins.

Traditional cultures have long considered fish roe, liver, and bone marrow sacred foods which nourish both mom and baby. These foods are rich in easily assimilated calcium, magnesium, iron, and iodine, as well as Vitamins A, D and K, all of which support fetal growth.

An essential nutrient for fetal growth is vitamin D, yet a deficiency of the “sunshine vitamin” is becoming an epidemic in the United States, where indoor lifestyles limit our ability to produce this essential nutrient. Vitamin D levels are easily tested, and should be normalized before conception.

While scientists used to believe that the placenta was a strong protective barrier shielding against toxins, in 2005 the Environmental Working Group turned this concept on its head. They reported that a small study of newborns found more than 287 environmental chemicals present in the infants cord blood, and the majority of these chemicals were linked to cancer, birth defects and/or neurologic damage. The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), found in sources as diverse as plastic water bottles and cash register receipts, is not only a potential carcinogen, but a recent study also shows that it interferes with normal egg development and may reduce fertility.

While no one knows the long term effect of these chemicals on a developing baby, the increase in childhood cancers, and the epidemic of autism and ADHD, should give a prospective parent pause. Taking steps to detoxify the environment and your body well in advance of conception is an essential part of a healthy pregnancy.

Know Your Specific Genetic Footprint In some cases, consuming a recommended amount of a nutrient is not enough to insure ready availability. Epigenetics is the science of evaluating how the environment impacts our genetic predispositions, either towards or away from optimal health. Understanding our genetic footprint can powerfully enhance prenatal planning.

For example, folate is a critical nutrient for normal fetal neurologic development, yet a common mutation in a key gene for a folate-processing enzyme can make it less efficient. Parents with this genetic inefficiency would do better with a different form of folate.

A simple blood test can identify the mutation for this enzyme (called methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase, or the simpler MTHFR) in either parent, and allow for appropriate advance planning. In addition, the folic acid found in fortified foods and in many prenatal vitamins is a poorly utilized form not found in nature. Supplementation should contain folate, not folic acid, and for those with MTHFR issues, another form entirely.

Your Digestive Health Digestive health is an often overlooked aspect of prenatal planning, but should not be ignored. The intestinal tract modulates not only digestion, but the majority of our immune system and neurotransmitter production. A poorly functioning gut can lead to chronic illnesses and food allergies in both mom and baby. With probiotic supplementation, at-risk infants have a reduced incidence of colic, food allergies, and eczema. Eating naturally fermented foods, avoiding potential food intolerances, and taking an appropriate probiotic help establish the right digestive balance.

A Clean Environment It is also important to clean house by getting rid of undesirable chemicals and contaminants in and around the home. Converting to natural, non-toxic cleaning supplies, using organic lawn care, and PERC-free dry cleaning are just a few of the ways to detoxify the environment.

Natural Ways to Combat Urinary Incontinence

J

ust look at the shelf space that grocery stores and pharmacies dedicate to adult diapers, and it’s obvious that many adults experience involuntary leakage of urine. These diapers are expensive, and the store’s profit is the customer’s budget item. In addition to this financial burden, this urinary leakage discourages many forms of exercise, leading to lower levels of fitness and weight gain. Some people find travel and shopping difficult, as bathrooms are not always readily available.

Two Types of Urinary Incontinence Stress Incontinence: In this case, the word stress refers to physical stress, not emotional stress. The muscles of the pelvic floor are not strong enough or quick enough to close off the urethra. With stress incontinence there is involuntary leakage of urine during coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, running, and sometimes during intercourse. Stress incontinence is common after childbirth, as the supportive tissues have been overstretched. It’s also common as we age, due to gradual weakening of muscles over time. Sometimes, it is due to a pull on the fascia by hip muscles that are in involuntary muscle guarding around hip osteoarthritis.

Urge Incontinence: Urge incontinence gives the feeling that one needs to void frequently, even when the bladder is not full. It’s also called, overactive bladder. It is due to involvement of the pudendal nerve. Sometimes the cause of pudendal nerve hyperactivity is undetermined, but sometimes it is due to sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

What’s Normal Let’s backup a little bit, and explore what’s normal. This is a topic that is not openly discussed, and so we just accept that what is happening to us is a normal part of aging. Under normal conditions, the bladder can hold about two cups of urine. When the bladder is half full it sends the brain a message. If it’s not a convenient time, we can ignore that first message. A second message will be sent to brain, and this one, too, can be ignored. Finally, when the bladder is nearly full, the urge can no longer be denied, but we can wait in line at the theater for a few minutes without leakage. During this time, the pelvic floor muscles are using their slow-twitch muscle fibers to close off the urethra.

Slow-twitch fibers use fat for energy, and can function for a long time without fatigue. It’s considered within normal limits to void a bladder every 2 to 3 hours during the day. At night, someone under 55 years old should sleep uninterrupted. From age 56 to 65, it’s normal to get up once during the night. Over 65, it’s normal to get up twice.

During quick activities, like sneezing or running, it’s the fasttwitch fibers that activate to close off the urethra. Fast-twitch fibers run on glucose for energy, and fatigue quickly.

There is good evidence that physical therapy is an effective intervention for both stress and urge incontinence. Physical therapists are highly skilled in the evaluation and treatment of muscle, joint and nerve disorders. The evaluation will discern whether the incontinence is urge or stress. Muscle tests are done to determine the strength and endurance of the fast- and slow-twitch muscle fibers.

Underlying conditions are assessed to rule out and treat problems at the hip or sacroiliac joint. Specific, targeted interventions are then provided.

Treating Stress Incontinence Stress incontinence is treated by strengthening the pelvic-floor muscles. Sometimes, when muscles are very weak or when there is poor coordination, muscle stimulation is provided. Once active contraction is discerned, exercise can be taught using biofeedback so that the exercises can be done properly at home. Strengthening the pelvic floor improves continence. The increased strength can also help to control prolapses in some patients.

Treating Urge Incontinence Urge incontinence is treated through relieving problems at the sacroiliac joint if indicated, as dysfunction at that joint can stimulate the pudendal nerve. In other cases, electrical stimulation is used at a wavelength that inhibits the pudendal nerve.

Physical therapists also offer advice regarding diet and fluid intake, as some nutrients can affect continence. For example, drinks with caffeine or alcohol may exacerbate symptoms.

Six Visits In most cases, physical therapy is provided once a week for about six weeks. The treatments are generally covered by insurance. Some patients like to self-treat, and biofeedback and electrical stimulation units for home use are available.

A Happy and Healthy Halloween!

rick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!”

We all know this poem. It is recited over and over again on doorsteps throughout America, by eager, costumed children on the eve of Halloween. For as long as we can remember, Halloween has been a time for family fun, involving costume preparation, pumpkin carving, festive home decorating, and of course, lots and lots of candy!! Everywhere we turn, we see a plethora of grocery specials on large bags of sugary sweets. It’s difficult to turn a blind eye to this tradition, even though it leaves us feeling bloated and sickly following an excessive period of artificially sweetened and processed candy eating.

The number of children in our country who are overweight has nearly tripled since the 1970s. We all know that childhood obesity is linked to diabetes, which also is on the rise. Now is the time to make a change, and this change needs to be pervasive. The best way to transform our family’s health is to embrace the change as a family.

Halloween is a great place to start!

How can we create an environment of health around a holiday that has always been associated with sweets?

Ways to Create a Happy and Healthy Halloween: 1. Limit the candy! There are many dentists who offer buy-back programs; they will pay children for their bags of candy. Other options are offering to trade your children’s candy bags for a toy they have been yearning for.

2. Increase intake of veggies. Eating more vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, can help to break down synthetic foods with high sugar content, by supporting the liver and gastrointestinal tract.

3. Increase water intake. Water is very helpful in flushing out toxins and reducing inflammation. Increasing the amount of water we drink can help us feel better.

5. When carving pumpkins, save the seeds! Clean the seeds and dry them, then lay them on a baking sheet, sprinkle on some sea salt, and roast them. A fun snack for all! You also can make pumpkin pie, though you’ll probably find that it is easier to use canned pumpkin rather then fresh pumpkin (the fresh pumpkin can be soggier after baking if you don’t drain out all the liquid). There are many great pumpkin pie recipes online that are gluten free and naturally sweetened.

6. Many of us constantly search for better food alternatives, but what can be substituted for candy? There are several great options for healthier sweet treats. Here are some ideas: a. Heavenly Organic Honey Pattie Chocolate Mint (www.heavenlyorganics.com; also carried at Whole Foods Market) b. Maple sugar candies (made from boiled down pure maple syrup; www.vermontcountrystore.com) c. Organic Fruit Strips, such as Clif Kid Organic Fruit Rope (carried at Whole Foods Market) 7. When thinking about Halloween, sweet cravings come to mind. Here are some supplement suggestions for reducing sugar cravings and digesting sugar: a. Gymnema: An herb that has been used to reduce sugar cravings and support sugar metabolism. b. St. John’s Wort: An herb that has been used to support sugar metabolism. c. Berberine: An herb that has been used for blood sugar regulation. d. L-Carnitine: A nutrient that has been used to reduce sugar cravings and support digestion. e. Konjac Powder: A root that provides a great source of fiber, helps us to feel full, and can support blood sugar regulation. f. Cinnamon: An aromatic spice that supports sugar metabolism.

Sweeteners to Avoid Many processed foods are sweetened with fructose. Often, this fructose is sourced from corn, and frequently from a highly processed form of corn. Corn allergies are on the rise, largely because of the processing and genetic modification of corn in recent decades. Avoiding corn-derived fructose may be helpful in reducing a variety of issues in children and adults including problems relating to digestion, learning, behavior, headaches, and more. Sometimes, in particular when traveling, it is challenging to completely avoid processed foods. In these instances, buying foods without added sugars, including fructose, is ideal.

Refined sugars can be toxic to the nervous system—avoiding these processed forms of sweeteners can improve learning and behavior. It is helpful to tackle this as a family and remove all refined sugar from your home. Make sure there are plenty of good substitutes such as fresh fruit and healthier candy options (such as those listed previously). If you are a baker, it is pretty easy to substitute healthy sweeteners for refined sugar. Sugars to avoid would include: white sugar, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, sugar in the raw, splenda, aspartame, nutra-sweet, high fructose corn syrup, cane juice, and cane sugar.

Natural Sweeteners There are many great alternatives. Some natural sweeteners that can be used for baking include: maple syrup and maple sugar, honey, stevia, coconut sugar, palm sugar, raw organic agave, brown rice syrup, molasses, and fresh fruit (use apple sauce to sweeten).

Hyperhydrosis: The Health of Sweating...

H

yperhydrosis is an uncomfortable and often embarrassing condition in which a person will sweat unpredictably and excessively from various areas of the body.

Sweat glands are located all over the body to help regulate temperature and prevent overheating. Sweating provides a way for the body to detoxify and helps to fight illness in the form of a fever. Sweating also can be triggered by physical or emotional stress. When it comes to excessive sweating, it is important to differentiate between primary focal hyperhydrosis and secondary/ general hyperhydrosis, as some forms of excessive sweating can indicate an underlying serious health condition.

The ability to sweat is a normal response to heat and mild stress, in fact sweating is healthy! Sweat naturally cleanses the skin through detoxification. Being exposed to the environment can clog pores with debris and toxins. Sweating helps to open pores and release toxic build up; sweating regularly through sauna or exercise can

improve the look and quality of skin.

Fevers, although uncomfortable, are really a response mounted by the body to help fight off invading pathogens. “Sweating the fever out” is the best way to help the body do its job in ridding infection. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and it is good to keep the skin active via sweating. Without regular exercise there probably are not a lot of sweating responses being elicited; exercise should be part the daily routine.

Primary Focal Hyperhydrosis Primary focal hyperhydrosis is defined as excessive sweating in one or more areas of the body, most often the hands, feet, underarms, and face. Sweating is typically bilateral, meaning sweating will occur in both hands, both underarms, or both feet.

While the exact cause of focal hyperhydrosis is not known, it is speculated to be due to an inappropriate overreaction of the nervous system signaling excessive sweating. Interestingly, primary focal hyperhydrosis can

run in families with as much as a one in four chance of developing this condition if a parent has symptoms.

Conventional treatments for primary focal hyperhydrosis range from topical prescription antiperspirants to botulinum toxin (Botox) injections to the local area, to stun the nervous system input to the sweat glands. Surgical removal of local sweat glands also has been employed in severe situations. These treatments are usually costly and in some circumstances only offer temporary relief.

Naturally speaking, treatments are aimed at reducing triggers like inflammation and stress that can disrupt the nervous system input to sweat glands. Reducing inflammation in a variety of ways, such as avoiding problem foods, reducing or eliminating dietary sugar, and eliminating poor lifestyle habits like smoking, reduces the stress that can lead to an increase in sweating responses.

Food Intolerances Food intolerances can be determined through an elimination and reintroduction diet, meaning a period of time is spent eliminating potential offending foods and then foods are reintroduced one at a time to determine potential contributing factors in hyperhydrosis.

Sugar Sugar is known for its pro-inflammatory properties, not only for its ability to cause tooth decay but also in the sense that it can clog the nervous system and inhibit appropriate signaling to sweat glands.

Smoking Smoking increases metabolism which in turn can increase body temperature and can induce sweating.

Stress Managing stress can be helpful when treating hyperhydrosis symptoms. An increase in stress hormones, like cortisol, provides erratic input to the nervous system, signaling distress and therefore causing excessive sweating. This can occur in seemingly nonthreatening situations such as when giving a speech. There are several ways to balance cortisol levels, depending on when they are spiking in the day. It can be helpful to perform a cortisol test to determine when stress hormones need to be supported. At the very least, preventing stress-hormone surges during non-threatening events through calming and relaxing herbs and nutrients can help to prevent excessive sweating.

Generalized Hyperhydrosis Generalized or secondary hyperhydrosis is classified as sweating all over the body. Excessive generalized sweating can be due to an underlying medical condition, such as hyperthyroidism, menopause, viral infections, HIV, diabetes, and even cancer. Full body sweating can occur even during sleeping hours, commonly waking an individual with sweaty bed sheets and clothing. While any form of excess sweating should be discussed with your physician, this form in particular must be evaluated because of the possibility that it is due to something serious.

Treatment of general hyperhydrosis depends on its cause. Testing for endocrine balance, immune-system function and inflammation are all imperative when it comes to finding the cause of excessive general sweating. While sweating is a normal and natural response, it can be a sign of something wrong. Whether it is excessive sweating or changes in sweating patterns, always let your physician know about your sweating concerns. No matter how embarrassing it may seem, there may be support available.

lace wild tuna in a bowl and break it up with a fork. Place avocado in a separate bowl with a tablespoon of lemon juice, a teaspoon of flax oil, and a few rings of white onion, and mix all ingredients together well. The avocado becomes the consistency of mayonnaise, but is much healthier for you! Combine with tuna; after all ingredients are mixed thoroughly place on top of Romaine lettuce and enjoy. This low fat meal is high in protein and omega fatty acids. Serves 2. See ad on page 18.
