ith the holidays approaching and our theme of metabolic syndrome this month, I thought it would be helpful to provide some strategies to fire up your metabolism and ignite your fat burning potential!

1. Eat enough of the right food in the right amount and right proportions. Doing this on a daily basis will help get your metabolic rate functioning correctly again and even speed it up. The right food means healthy, lean protein (chicken, wild salmon, tuna, egg whites), low glycemic index carbohydrates (oatmeal, wholegrain bread, apples, berries), and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, almonds, sunflower seeds). The right amount means that you have calculated how many calories you need on a daily basis to maintain a healthy weight, and you are knowledgeable about portion sizes (the biggest culprit in weight gain!). The right proportions means balancing your meals with carbs, fat, and protein. A good ratio to start with is 40-50% carbohydrate, 30% protein (or 1 gram per pound of body weight), and 20-30% fat. Then space your meals evenly throughout the day as to maintain less fluctuation in your glucose and insulin levels. Five to six smaller meals a day is much healthier than 2-3 larger meals. Many people think that in order to lose weight they need to cut calories. Well, this may be true if you’re eating at McDonald’s every day and taking in twice the amount of calories you need on a daily basis. But for the average person, it’s not too many calories that is the problem – it’s not enough of the right kind of calories.

2. Add strength training to your exercise routine. Strength training triggers your body’s release of growth hormone, which is essential for fat burning and increasing your metabolic rate. Numerous studies have shown that participating in a strength training session pumps up your metabolism for 2-3 hours post-exercise and sometimes even longer.

3. Change up your aerobic exercise routine with interval training. The higher the exercise intensity, the greater amount of fat and carbohydrate burned during the exercise session. An added benefit of high intensity training is that more fat will be burned post-exercise during your recovery period. Instead of running for 30 minutes at 70% of your max heart rate, try interspersing one minute sprints.

Sprint for one minute and slow to a light jog for two minutes. Repeat until reaching 30-45 minutes.

4. Get enough sleep. All the benefits of the right diet and the right exercise program can be negated if you’re not getting enough sleep. Growth hormone is released while you sleep and is necessary for rebuilding muscle and many other important metabolic functions.

Add all these up and you’re on the right path for firing up that metabolic rate and burning more fat all day long!

What Words Do You Use?

W

hat words would you use to describe the biggest problem in your life? Let me tell you why I ask this of cancer patients and others. Because the words they use are always related to problems in their life. On a personal level, a few years ago I was having problems with vertigo and asked myself how would you describe the problem? My answer, “The world is spinning around.”

As soon as I heard that I knew I needed to slow down and the symptom was doing it by keeping me in bed.

A cancer patient responded to my question with the word failure. I asked her how the word fit her life and she answered her body had failed her. I repeated that I wanted to know how the word fit her life and she said, “My parents committed suicide when I was a child.

So I must have been a failure as a child.” That’s when her journey to truly healing her life began. Others will answer draining, sucking, pressure, roadblock and say thank you as the word holds meaning for them. I also hear wake-up call, gift and new beginning when the affliction has awakened people to a new road in their life. As Joseph Campbell said, “Only birth can conquer death…..the birth not of the old thing again, but of something new.” So follow his advice and birth your true self as a response to the labor pains of life.

Who is the most important person, to you, who has lived in your lifetime? If you didn’t answer me, meaning you are the most important and meaningful person to yourself, then you have a problem.

How and why should anyone else on this planet be a more significant factor in your life than you? So get it together and acknowledge yourself even if your parents and others did not.

to speak I asked her how she could stand politics. I told her when I was involved in it I always became so frustrated by the eternal committee meetings and the time it took to accomplish something meaningful I resigned because I felt so frustrated by the process. I have to add, as my friend Ashley Montague said, “If you’re ever going to die do it at a faculty meeting. No one will notice the transition.” Well Rosa turned to me and said, “It’s the potential.” She impressed me as she went on to tell me about many significant laws which are now in effect though it took her years to get them through Congress. That’s a word I think we all need to make a part of our lives when we are facing difficult times and even life threatening afflictions. It is what has kept me working with cancer patients and others because I know they are not statistics and have the potential for better than expected results.

Metabolic Syndrome...An Epidemic Beyond Proportion

M

ore than 100 million Americans suffer from metabolic syndrome. Sedentary, high-stress lifestyles, coupled with poor diets of high glycemic, low fiber and low nutrient foods, have contributed to a metabolic syndrome health crisis that is only worsening. Metabolic Syndrome, also known as syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome, defines a constellation of abnormalities that are associated with an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic vascular disease (e.g. heart disease and stroke). While the exact mechanisms are not yet fully known, we know that most who develop metabolic syndrome are older, obese, sedentary, have a degree of insulin resistance, and have a genetic predisposition.

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when a person has three or more of the following: • Abdominal obesity (waist greater than 40 inches in males, 35 inches in females, or BMI (body mass index) greater than 30.

• Triglyceride level greater than 150 mg/dL. • HDL cholesterol of less than 40 mg/dL in men; less than 50 mg/dL in women.

• Systolic blood pressure (top number) of 130 mmHg or greater.

• Diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) of 85 mmHg or greater.

• Fasting glucose (blood sugar) of 100 mg/dL or greater.

• Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance (the body can’t properly use insulin or blood sugar).

Associated diseases and signs are: hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid in blood), fatty liver(especially in concurrent obesity) progressing to NAFLD (non alcoholic fatty liver disease), polycystic ovarian syndrome/fertility problems (in women), sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, cancer, and acanthosis nigricans ( a hyperpigmentation of the skin usually found in body folds and associated with insulin resistance).

It is common for there to be a development of visceral fat and increased levels of plasma TNF alpha in the fat cells, which causes a production of inflammatory cytokines and might also trigger insulin resistance. The increase in the central adipose (fat) tissue around the waist and deep within the abdomen allows progression of inflammation, which eventually contributes to an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Risk factors Stress, when prolonged, upsets the hormone balance of the hypothalamic-pitiutary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) and causes high cortisol levels, which raise glucose and insulin levels, which promotes visceral adiposity (central abdominal obesity), insulin resistance, dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides), hypertension, and osteoporosis.

The combination of being overweight with central obesity is a key feature of metabolic syndrome and there is a strong relationship between waist circumference and increasing adiposity. However, despite the importance of obesity, patients who are of normal weight may also be insulin resistant and have the syndrome.

Sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity is a predictor of cardiovascular disease events and related mortality. Many components of metabolic syndrome are associated with a sedentary lifestyle, including increased adipose tissue (predominantly central); reduced HDL cholesterol; and a trend toward increased triglycerides, blood pressure, and glucose in the genetically susceptible. Compared with individuals who watched television or videos or used their computers for less than one hour daily, those who carried out these behaviors for greater than four hours daily have a twofold increased risk of metabolic syndrome.

Aging Metabolic syndrome affects 44% of the U.S. population older than age 50. With respect to that demographic, the percentage of women having the syndrome is higher than that of men. The age dependency of the syndrome’s prevalence is seen in most populations around the world.

Diabetes Mellitus Some studies show an estimated 75% of patients with Type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) have metabolic syndrome. The presence of metabolic syndrome in these populations is associated with a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) than found in patients with Type 2 diabetes or IGT without the

syndrome. Adiponectin is a hormone that is secreted from adipose (fat) tissue that controls glucose regulation and fatty acid breakdown.

The lower the levels are in the blood, the higher the percentage of body fat in the adult. Hypoadiponectinemia (low serum levels of adiponectin) has been shown to increase insulin resistance and is considered to be a risk factor for developing metabolic syndrome.

Coronary Heart Disease The approximate prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) is 50%, with a prevalence of 37% in patients with premature coronary artery disease (age 45), particularly in women. With appropriate cardiac rehabilitation and changes in lifestyle (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, weight reduction, and, in some cases, drugs), the prevalence of the syndrome can be reduced.

Lipodystrophy is an abnormal condition of the body’s adipose tissue in which there may be uneven distribution of fat tissue (excess or lack of) in various regions of the body. It can be genetic or acquired (e.g., buffalo hump on back of neck, a lump or dent in skin from insulin injections, or a side effect of antiretroviral drugs in HIV patients) and may give rise to severe insulin resistance and many of metabolic syndrome’s components.

Patients with schizophrenia and other psychiatric illnesses may have a predisposition to metabolic syndrome that is exacerbated by sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary habits, possible limited access to care, and antipsychotic drug-induced adverse effects.

Rheumatic diseases like psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis have been found to be associated with metabolic syndrome.

Toxins May Contribute to Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance Insulin resistance is a strong indicator of metabolic syndrome.

Dietary interventions alone, while helpful, have proven to be incomplete to address insulin resistance, with studies correlating metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance with higher levels of toxins stored in the body. Most environmental toxins are fat-soluble, and therefore can get ‘stuck’ in adipocytes, or fat cells. Increased adipocyte mass, as seen in metabolic syndrome, can then act as an endocrine organ, communicating with other tissues by producing large amounts of inflammatory cytokines within the body (Potenza and Mechanick 2009).

Many patients, even without consuming excess calories, may develop insulin resistance when toxins are present in the body (Hyman, 2010). This is because toxins interfere with glucose and

cholesterol metabolism (Jones, Maguire & Griffin, 2008). Toxins can similarly contribute to obesity and other metabolic conditions by increasing inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial injury, and also by altering thyroid metabolism and impairing central appetite regulation (Hyman, 2007). Based on current environmental medicine research, many integrative treatment approaches, along with dietary and nutritional changes, will address cellular toxicity as a critical component of reversing metabolic syndrome and restoring insulin sensitivity.

Nutritional Support for Detoxification Detoxification is an energy-requiring process that puts a metabolic burden on the body. Therefore, water or juice fasting regimens are not effective for detoxing because they deplete the body of essential nutrients required for healthy detoxification. These fasts can have many adverse health effects, including decreased energy production, breakdown of lean tissue instead of fat, increased oxidative stress, and unbalanced detoxification.

For those reasons, avoid fad diets or generic over-the-counter detox kits. The best program for you is one custom- tailored by a knowledgeable healthcare provider, and should include a low-allergy, high-protein rice/pea powdered beverage with targeted gastrointestinal, liver, and anti-inflammatory support.

Treatment The first-line treatment is change of lifestyle (dietary changes and exercise). If in three to six months efforts to remedy risk factors prove insufficient, then drug treatment may be required. Generally, the individual disorders that compose the metabolic syndrome are treated separately.

The most important therapeutic modality in the control of metabolic syndrome is weight loss. This is achieved by lowering caloric intake and controlling the type of carbohydrates consumed. Understanding the glycemic index of food and the amount of fiber it contains is helpful. The lower the glycemic index the better. The lowest glycemic index foods are green veggies and tomatoes, which have glycemic indices of less than 15, while potatoes and white bread are 95, and glucose itself is 100. Eating higher amounts of protein and healthy fats, reducing carbohydrates, and avoiding all forms of sugar will assist in weight control. One must read labels and avoid all sweeteners including honey, high fructose corn syrup, and fructose.

I recommend avoiding all artificial sweeteners as well, but stevia in moderation is okay. Low-glycemic fruits like grapefruit, strawberries, apples, peaches, and cherries can be consumed in moderation.

The only way to get control of the hyper insulin response is to let the pancreas rest for several weeks and limit all high glycemic foods like pasta, bread, cereals, alcohol, sweets, corn, etc. Hyperinsulinemia is the response by the pancreas to eating too many carbs over time. This excess carbohydrate gets stored as fat, and ultimately causes obesity.

Exercise burns calories and reduces body fat, triglycerides, cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure, while increasing insulin sensitivity, improving mental outlook, and building muscle and strength. Muscles are more responsive than fat cells to insulin and glucose, and conditioned muscles are more responsive than unconditioned muscles. A small weight loss (even as little as ten pounds) can often stabilize blood glucose levels and lessen the risk of diabetes.

Fiber lowers blood glucose levels; consume at least 25 grams daily of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Magnesium lowers blood glucose levels, increases insulin sensitivity, and calms the sympathetic nervous system. NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine) protects beta cells against free radical destruction. Silymarin (milk thistle) improves liver function and blood glucose control and reduces free radical activity. Vitamin

C lowers blood glucose and CRP levels, inhibits glycation, prevents accumulation of sorbitol and protects against free radicals. Vitamin E reduces CRP and oxidative stress, enhances insulin sensitivity and glucose transport, and prevents complications arising from inflammation. Vitamin K may play a role in insulin’s response to glucose.

Mold on Food Molds can also grow on foods. We all have seen the fuzzy molds that can grow on breads. However, not all molds are visible.

Mold can root itself into foods and may not be visible with the eyes.

If you have a mold sensitivity, completely avoiding molds is not always possible, but you can reduce your exposure by selecting foods that may contain fewer molds.

Dust and Dust Mites Dust and dust mites are common triggers for a variety of respiratory symptoms. People with reactions to house dust usually also have reactions to dust mites and dust mite excrement as well.

Some commonly found items in house dust are: ash, animal and human dander, animal and human hair, cotton fibers, fingernail filings, food crumbs, fungal and mold spores, glass particles, glue, graphite, insect fragments and excrement, soot, paint chips, paper fibers, parts of plants, pollens, polymer foam particles, salt and sugar crystals, silk fibers, stone particles, tobacco, wood shavings, and wool fibers.

Dust Mite Allergies According to Darryl C. Zeldin, acting director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, 18% to 30% of Americans are allergic or sensitive to the waste products of dust mites, and almost 50% of American homes have allergen levels that are high enough to cause sensitivity in people who were not previously allergic to dust mites. In other words, high levels of dust mites and their excrement can cause previously non-allergic people to develop an allergy or sensitivity.

According to the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology, approximately 10 % of Americans exhibit allergic sensitivity to dust mites.

Aggravating Factors Dust and dust mites are present all year; their associated symptoms can be present year-round as well. The symptoms can become worse during times of the year when the house is closed. The dust mite excrement can become airborne when someone walks over the carpet, sits in a favorite chair or shakes out blankets, making symptoms worse in people who are reactive. Closing the house during cold weather can cause a larger concentration of dust mites and dust mite excrement to accumulate inside, increasing symptoms for people during cooler seasons of the year. Symptoms can also be made worse in the spring when pollens can further aggravate respiratory reactions.

Mattresses, Pillows, Furniture, Carpets House dust mites are too small to be visible to the naked eye.

They live on dead skin cells, commonly called dander, that are shed from humans and their pets. Very high concentrations of dust mites are most often in mattresses, pillows, frequently used furniture, and carpeted areas. The average person sloughs off 1/3 of an ounce of dead skin every week, which can give the mites a nice meal on a regular basis.

Time to Change Your Pillow If you have a sensitivity to dust mites, change your pillow at least once a year. Research has shown that a two-year-old pillow can contain 10% of its weight from dead mites; from their excrement as well as fungi. In 2005, The University of Manchester did a study on pillows and found 16 different species of fungi in a single pillow.

Here are some things you can do to decrease your overall exposure to dust, dust mites and molds in the bedroom, as that is where over 1/3 of the exposure happens.

Remember, a typical used mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites inside it.

1. Try vacuuming the mattress or using dust mite covers for your beds and pillows.

2. Wash your sheets, pillows and blankets in very hot water. Cold and warm water won’t kill dust mites or mold spores. For

fabric that can’t be washed in hot water; just pop it into the freezer for 24 to 48 hours to kill dust mites.

3. Reduce temperature and humidity: Keep the thermostat in the house below 70 degrees and if possible keep humidity below 50%.

4. Clean weekly: Change pillowcases, sheets, and blankets weekly.

5. Wash and dry your hair before you go to bed, and change out of your day clothes before entering the bedroom. Mold spores can stick to hair and clothing. Keep them out of the bedroom!

6. Children’s soft cloth toys: Regularly place soft toys in the freezer for 24 hours before you wash them, or wash them in hot water.

7. Get an Air Purifier: While it is better to stop the dust mites at the source, reducing the dust levels in the air is a good secondary measure.

8. Furnace Air Filters: Clean or replace the air filters on your furnace or air conditioner at least once a month.

several tests, the nutritional values of eggs from 14 different free-range chicken flocks are compared with USDA nutritional data on eggs from confined chickens. The study highlights huge disparities between the two varieties. From their data Mother Earth News concludes that free-range eggs have four to six times more vitamin D, more than twice as much vitamin A, and three times more vitamin E than confined hen eggs. On top of that they contain 1/3 less cholesterol, ¼ less saturated fat, two times more omega-3 fatty acids, and seven times more beta-carotene. By raising your own chickens, you gain the nutritional value of free-range eggs and the security of knowing the hen that laid them. As a chicken owner you have control over the habitat and the diet of your chickens, two factors that affect eggs. No need to rely on a large corporation to provide mediocre eggs from anonymous chickens! With your own backyard flock, you no longer have to worry over which brand to buy at the supermarket; you already have the best quality eggs at your doorstep.

Free Range Eggs are Less Likely to be Contaminated Along with the taste and nutritional advantages, fresh eggs also are the least likely to be contaminated. Eggs just hours from the nesting boxes have healthy whites that help fight infection. The alkalinity of the egg-white hinders growth of bacteria while the thickness of the white keeps bacteria from spreading. As the egg-white ages, it loses some of its thickness, making it more susceptible to bacterial growth.

This is due to loss of water and CO2 , a process that lowers the pH of the white and makes it thinner and more watery. After the third day of storage, the pH of the white has already fallen from approximately 7.6 to around 9.7. Because of this, store-bought eggs, which sit on the shelf for several days if not weeks, may not have the same quality of protective barrier as day-old eggs from the back yard.

One of the main concerns of many prospective chicken farmers is the threat of salmonella. Although one might think that health inspected corporations can better ensure clean eggs, this is not always the case. Their process of washing eggs removes feces that may contain salmonella bacteria, yet it also removes a layer that shields the egg from infection. This barrier, known as the protective bloom, is a gelatinous substance that blocks the pores of the egg, guarding against malignant bacteria. Unlike factory assembly lines, backyard chicken farmers can spot-clean appropriately to avoid removing the bloom while still protecting themselves from salmonella. Eggs need individualized care which machinery cannot provide. It is therefore in the interest of you as the consumer to take the inspection and production of eggs into your own hands.

Pest Managers and Trash Receptacles Eggs are not the only gift that chickens offer. Their eating habits and, believe it or not, even their pooping habits are great assets to owners and their backyards. Because homegrown chickens have the luxury of wandering in the grass, they consume a diverse palate of insects. This grazing protects gardens from destruction and protects humans from pests. Though they don’t match Pitbulls or Rottweilers in strength, chickens are the perfect ‘guard dogs’ when it comes to attacking ticks, flies, fleas, and slugs. While the chickens enjoy their afternoon snacks, the garden is able to grow unthreatened. Meanwhile, chicken farmers can enjoy their yards without the bite or buzz of a bug. In addition to serving as pest managers, chickens also act as the perfect trash receptacles. Their big appetites come in handy

when getting rid of old kitchen scraps and leftovers. Far from picky, hens will eat many varieties of vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy products.

Good for the Soil, Too! Just as hen keepers thank their chickens for what they consume, so do they thank chickens for what they expel. Their feces are rich in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, making chicken poop an even better addition to garden soil than horse or cow manure. By composting the manure for 40 to 60 days, the nitrogen, which can kill plants at high potency, is weakened to a level that is useable. While in the compost the nitrogen boosts the heat of the decomposing matter, killing off any threat of bacteria. Chicken poop also benefits the garden by helping to keep water in the soil at greater quantities. No matter what they do, be it eat, lay eggs, or even poop, home-raised chickens can do no wrong.

Poultry over Pooch?

Raising chickens is an adventure that my family and many other backyard chicken farmers embrace. Buy your first flock and I assure you that you’ll improve your health and the health of your yard, as well as gain pets that are easy to love. Dog lovers might disagree, but I’d vote poultry over pooch any day.

Nausea...More than a Belly Ache

T

here are several explanations for the occasional bouts of nausea. Food poisoning, overeating and motion sickness are common reasons for feeling nauseated.

But when nausea persists without explanation or reason, it could mean something more.

Nausea can be a symptom of a very large array of disease states ranging from acute appendicitis to gall stones. What helps a physician to hone in on the probable reason for your nausea depends on the presentation. For example, if the nausea comes on suddenly with persistent stomach cramping and is accompanied by fever, bowel changes and anorexia, the nausea is likely to be due to acute appendicitis. While if the presentation were nausea with severe sudden attacks of upper right quadrant or epigastric pain, particularly after ingesting fats, that would lean more toward gall bladder insufficiency.

The top five reasons for nausea in my practice include: Gastric Ulcers Ulcers can develop in the lining of the stomach creating symptoms of nausea. Stomach ulcers develop when the lining is chroni-

cally irritated and eroded away. Chronic use of medications including NSAID’s, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are the most common offenders.

Preventing stomach upset from medications can be done by ensuring they are taken exactly as directed. Taking certain medications on an empty stomach can irritate the lining and thus create nausea, therefore, some medications are to be taken with food to help prevent nausea from developing.

Make sure to not wear tight fitting clothing around the midsection, this can restrict proper digestion and perpetuate nausea.

Nausea of pregnancy, commonly referred to as morning sickness, affects up to 85% of women. Nausea typically starts by 4-6 weeks gestation, peaks at weeks 8-12 and resolves by the 20th week. While morning sickness is the most common, nausea can hit any time of day or be consistent through the day. Although the exact reason nausea afflicts pregnant women is not known, changes of hormones play a role.

Eating small meals through the day is an easy way to abate morning sickness. This will help to keep blood sugar stable and prevent hypoglycemia, which can trigger nausea.

The Essentials of Wellness

s a Naturopathic doctor, I know that wellness is the destination my patients seek. But with food choices, lifestyles, sleep cycles, environmental factors, spiritual connection, attitude adjustments, and more influencing their travels, it can sometimes seem like a maze to get there. We all know that every journey is easier if you have a plan and some directions. We arrive at our destinations much more quickly and easily if we have a plan. Today I’m going to introduce to you the same map I share with my patients.

Welcome to the journey of healing.

There are 3 simple ground rules: • Every step you take involves a choice, • Every choice has a consequence, • There is no wrong choice.

The best plan in the world won’t get you to where you want to be unless you follow the directions! Can you choose to deviate?

Sure — the departures might help you find a route you enjoy more, or they might help you realize you’re lost! No problem — there is no wrong choice — every choice will provide you with feedback on whether to continue in the direction you’re going or to head in another direction. With the right tools and your destination in mind, you can always get back on track. It’s only natural!

In the maze to wellness, there are seven main roads to healing: • Breathing • Good Nutrition • Regular Movement • Enough Sleep • Introspection • Natural Medicines • A Joyful Heart

To reach your final destination — the circle of wellness, you’ll need to walk them all. Let’s begin with the first step: Breathing: Breath awareness is one of the most overlooked and underrated paths to healing. Deep, mindful breathing does wonders to re-oxygenate and cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. Make it a priority to incorporate at least 15 minutes of breath work into your day. Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, or simple focused breathing are all good activities to strengthen your breath awareness, nourish you on many levels, and accelerate your journey to wellness.

Good Nutrition: Strive to follow a natural diet, high in whole foods and plenty of fresh, clean water. Whole foods are those closest to their natural state; unprocessed, unrefined, unmanufactured, such as vegetables, whole grains, fruits, fresh nuts, and seeds. Occasional low fat, organic animal sources will lend variety and satisfaction.

Shop at the grocery store’s perimeters, the outside aisles, and skip the middle rows. And remember to hydrate your body with clean, fresh water to keep your cells hydrated and help your body rid itself of toxins naturally.

Movement: Our bodies were meant to move. The more you move, the more you’ll want to! Incorporate a daily half hour of any activity that raises your heart rate and increases your breathing. If you don’t have enough time to do 30 minutes at once, three ten-minute segments or six five-minute segments will do the trick.

Rest: It’s not only beneficial, but critical to rest whenever your body tells you it’s necessary — that is whenever you’re genuinely tired. Resist the urge to stay up late. Go to bed at a reasonable hour so you’ll awaken refreshed and renewed. Sleep is critical to rebuilding and restoring our cells and is absolutely essential in healing. Pay attention to your body to recognize and follow your natural sleep cycles. And while we’re on the subject of rest, be sure to rest your mind as well!

Introspection: Connecting frequently with your spiritual source is a simple but profoundly effective activity to allow wellness. Our natural state is one of wellness and balance. It is accomplished through the connection of body, mind, and spirit. Allow your natural wellness to thrive by reminding yourself daily of who you really are, a divine source of energy. Meditation, prayer, or any mindful activity that connects you to your higher self will help you regain your inherent well-being.

Natural Medicine: We’ve already talked about the best natural medicines — breath, nutrition, exercise, rest, and introspection — to bring your body, mind, and spirit into a state of wellness.

But sometimes you need to supplement them with some other healing tools. Find something to appreciate every day, no matter what the circumstances of your daily life. And don’t keep it to yourself! Share your love, your joy, your compassion, and the special and unique gift of you every chance you get. A joyful heart shared enriches both the receiver and the giver.

Now that you have a plan and directions, you can proceed eagerly on your journey, anticipating all of the adventures it will bring. I wish you well at all levels (body, spirit and mind) as you make your way to wellness.

World Diabetes Day

N

ovember 14th is nationally recognized as World Diabetes Day. Diabetes has become one of the most prevalent disorders in our country and throughout the world. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) consider the rising rate of diabetes in our country to be an epidemic. Diabetes is essentially a disease associated with problems metabolizing sugar. The energy derived from breaking down sugar is vital to the functioning of every cell in our body. All forms of diabetes have been considered treatable since 1921, when insulin first became available. Today, there are very successful nutritional and natural lifestyle regimens that can help regulate blood sugars and contribute to a very healthy life.

Sugar Consumption In the early 1800s, average Americans were consuming about six pounds of sugar per year. In 1999, this number increased to approximately 100 pounds of sugar per person per year! As this number increases, diabetes statistics also increase.

There are many different forms of sugars, including natural sugars found in fruit and natural sweeteners such as raw honey. In addition, there are refined sugars such as cane sugar or high-fructose corn sugar. And lastly, there are chemical sweeteners such as Aspartame and Nutra-Sweet. These latter sugars

have been researched thoroughly and have been found to be carcinogenic. Aspartame, in particular, has been found to be neurotoxic. But so much of what we consume today as Americans includes refined sugars. In fact, it is challenging to find packaged foods that don’t include added sweeteners.

Sugar Cravings—Insulin Searching for Sugar We all have experienced sugar cravings. They are challenging. It is helpful to understand the physiology behind them. The pancreas produces insulin. Insulin is needed to break down sugar in the body to produce energy. If the pancreas is compromised and is not producing enough insulin or if the insulin is not able to latch onto the sugar, then what happens is the body ‘believes’ there is not enough sugar in the body. This leads to strong sugar cravings, which typically leads to increased sugar consumption. The best way to break this cycle is to eliminate refined sugars. There may be a couple of weeks of increased sugar cravings during this process but eventually the sugar cravings will decrease markedly. The most challenging part of this process is the understanding that our sugar cravings are so strong because they are physiologic.

What is the Answer? Decrease Sugar!

What is the answer? It’s actually quite simple — reduce and then eliminate all refined sugars. This sounds difficult and in fact it is a little! But the motivating factor is improved health. When it comes down to it, we all want to live longer and feel better.

Unfortunately, as good as it tastes, this can’t be achieved with refined sugar comprising so much of our diet.

To eliminate refined sugars successfully, consider the following steps: 1. Begin by reading all labels. Look for any added sweeteners that are listed in the ingredients.

2. Keep in mind that a refined sugar could be derived from a natural source, for example, high fructose corn syrup coming from corn; however, the real concern is about how refined the sweetener is by the time it gets to you. In the case of high fructose corn syrup, it is very refined and therefore, not optimal.

3. Refined sugars could include: sugar, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, sucrose, cane sugar/syrup, evaporated cane juice, glucose, dextrose, fructose, corn syrup, corn sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, isomalt, sucanat, Splenda, Aspartame, Nutra-sweet, Equal, saccharin, beet sugar, beet syrup.

4. Sugar alcohols are being used more and more as added sweeteners because they are non-caloric, however, they are still refined and should be reduced.

5. Natural sweeteners include: raw honey, stevia, pure maple syrup/sugar, brown rice syrup, fruit and unprocessed fruit juice, coconut crystals, palm sugar, date sugar.

6. Agave nectar has been highlighted in the last few years as an optimal sweetener because it is considered to be low glycemic.

Recent research has revealed how refined agave is. While the raw and organic versions are healthier, it is better to consume in moderation.

7. It also is important to mention that alcohol is processed similarly to refined sugar and should be avoided in persons who are pre-diabetic and diabetic.

8. When baking, it is easy to substitute natural sweeteners for refined sugars, and you usually can reduce the amount of sugar required.

9. In addition to avoiding refined sugars, people who have high blood sugars need to eat foods that are lower on the glycemic index.

When we eat a food that is considered high glycemic, it means that, when ingested, our blood sugars spike quickly. This is not optimal for someone who has sugar metabolism problems. In general it is healthier to eat a lower glycemic diet. There are many books and websites that list foods and their glycemic index rating.

Sugar Elimination To optimally eliminate refined sugars from your diet it is important to give yourself time. Equally important is to recognize that this is a process. It’s likely that you will make some mistakes along the way and that’s okay! One way to begin is to designate a week or a month to just read all labels. This will help you become more aware of what you put in your body. Once you are comfortable with label checking, you can make a list of all the foods you love that have refined sugar ingredients. In addition to reducing these items in your diet, you can search for substitutes that include natural sweeteners.

But keep in mind that for many people, lowering the glycemic index is important for improving health. Eventually, you want to break the habit of needing that piece of chocolate at 10 o’clock every night.

Remember, the best way to break the sugar craving cycle is to stop eating refined sugars.

Benefits of Sugar Elimination In addition to improving the physiologic health of your body and enhancing sugar metabolism, you’ll enjoy many additional benefits when you cut refined sugars out of your diet. Some of these benefits include decreased headaches and joint pain, weight loss, increased energy and decreased fatigue and lethargy, improved learning and behavior. The most successful way to implement this type of change is by committing as a family and getting rid of all refined sugars in the house. Working together as a family makes committing to a healthier life easier.

The Truth About Feeding a Sweet Tooth

besity, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are just a few of the illnesses associated with overconsumption of sweets and carbohydrates.

The health risks of too much sugar in the diet have become such a concern that the mayor of New York City recently proposed a ban on the sale of large, sugary drinks as a public health risk. Our taste buds, however, are primed to like the flavor, so industry has responded to the public’s ever-increasing cravings by continually inventing synthetic products which are touted as filling our need while avoiding the poor health effects of real sugar. Unfortunately, these chemical replacements are not without their own adverse effects. Our bodies do use the glucose from natural sugars as fuel, so the key to managing a sweet tooth is choosing the healthiest options available, while remembering to use them sparingly.

Not So Sweet: Synthetic sweeteners such as Aspartame, Equal and NutraSweet have no place in a healthy diet. The evidence against these substances is mounting. Research shows that using artificial sweeteners does not facilitate weight loss; some studies even reported that people who regularly consumed the fake stuff actually gained more weight than those who ate real sugar. Phony sugars fool the body into craving ever more sweetness, resulting in a greater intake of calories overall.

Aspartame: Aspartame has been linked to increases in fibromyalgia symptoms, headaches and other neurologic effects. It forms formaldehyde when metabolized, and when aspartame was mixed with a food coloring called Quinoline yellow, neurotoxic byproducts were produced. Diet soda use has been linked to Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.

Splenda: Sucralose (Splenda®) is touted as a more natural alternative sweetener since it is produced from sugar. However, the addition of chlorine to the sugar molecule completely changes the way it is perceived by the body. Sucralose was first discovered during the

development of a pesticide, and some of its side effects include skin rashes, nausea, and headache. While no long-term studies have been completed to insure Sucralose safety, short-term studies have reported enlarged livers, shrunken thymus glands, and kidney disorders. And it doesn’t help you lose weight!

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): While the corn growers lobby will tell you that HFCS is the same as sugar, emerging data tells us this just isn’t so. Rats fed HFCS gained weight more quickly than those consuming sugar. HFCS is insidious in processed foods, even non-sweet items such as salad dressings and sauces and actually seems to increase appetite. Much of it is laced with mercury, a toxic heavy metal. There is no good reason to consume it.

Table Sugar...Sitting on the Fence: While overconsumption of sugar and the refined sweets containing it is truly a national health problem, plain old sugar is not the enemy. It is a natural compound, well understood and metabolized by the human body. In small quantities it does little harm. Hands down, a teaspoon of sugar is almost always a better choice than any of the options mentioned above. Just remember, Mary Poppins never sang about the 10 ounces of sugar in one can of soda. Moderation is essential here.

Agave: The natural sweetness provided by the agave plant was long praised as a healthy replacement for sugar, but lately it’s been looked at more critically. It is higher in fructose than sugar is; fructose is a type of sugar which, while natural, has been linked to increased obesity and even cancer. Because agave is plant-based, it is sold in health food stores, but there are concerns that as the market for agave has grown, it is increasingly industrialized. As with sugar, a teaspoon here or there should not be a problem, but overuse is to be avoided.

The Ones to Choose Fruit: A few sliced peaches or dried cranberries provide enough sweetness in a bowl of cereal to make additional sugar unnecessary.

Fruit purees and all-fruit jams contain vitamins and antioxidants and can replace sugar in many recipes.

Honey: Raw honey contains nutrients such as B vitamins, calcium, manganese, vitamin C and disease-fighting antioxidants. Even better, a special type of honey called Manuka Honey possesses powerful antibacterial properties and is currently being used topically in some 26

hospitals to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Honey is slightly sweeter than sugar, but does contain more of the blood-sugar-boosting fructose, and so should be used only in small amounts.

Blackstrap Molasses: Rich in iron, calcium and other nutrients, blackstrap molasses has a robust flavor that is great for adding depth to foods. It is far more nutritious than table sugar, but does contain calories and will increase blood glucose levels. As with all sweeteners, it should be used in small quantities.

Plant-based Sweeteners (Lo Han and Stevia): Stevia is one of the oldest-known herbal sweeteners. It has zero calories and is produced from the stevia plant. It comes in both a liquid and powder form. Stevia cannot be used for baking unless mixed with another form of fiber to add bulk, and has a noticeable aftertaste that some people dislike. A newer product, called Truvia, is a manipulated stevia compound produced by one of the leading industrial food behemoths. Its “naturalness” is quite suspect. Lo Han or Lo Han Guo is a low-calorie, low glycemic food derived from the Lo Han fruit.

It has little after taste, and has been used in Eastern cultures for respiratory ailments and as a longevity promoter. It may also lower blood sugar.

Xylitol, Erythritol and other Sugar Alcohols: Xylitol is a tasty product derived from corn or birch bark. It can be used measure-formeasure in recipes that call for sugar, has potent antibacterial activity, and has been proven to reduce cavities and strep bacteria.

All sugar alcohols are low-glycemic, but excess intake can cause GI distress.

Choosing a sweetener should not be complicated. Use one that comes from nature, has not been adulterated, and provides some health benefit. Consume it sparingly and you will begin to recognize the inherent sweetness of many foods.

Over the years, I’ve kept notes about my experiences as a patient and about services that could be improved. The more I went to doctors, the more I noticed that critical details of my health care were overlooked. Office visits were too brief for a thorough examination and assessment. Treatment plans were hastily determined. Other patients complained of similar experiences, and some told me about doctors who wrongly attributed symptoms to psychological causes.

Tips from Other Sample Topics Equipment Directions: If your practitioner gives you medical equipment, make sure you know how to use it and that the equipment is functioning as it should. I was not always adequately trained to use equipment, and sometimes the controls on the machines were not properly set. That resulted in my having to contact the manufacturers to get specific usage instructions for the machines’ controls.

Expired Samples: If your doctor gives you sample medications or tests kits, pay attention to their expiration dates. I’ve frequently been given expired samples, and some lab tests had to be repeated due to expired test kits. Inform your doctors if you receive expired kits or samples.

Check Doctors’ Notes for Accuracy: It’s important to check your doctors’ notes on your office visits to ensure accuracy. Notes about me listed diseases I didn’t have, wrong limbs as problematic, and an exam I was never given. Incorrect notes can hurt your status when applying for life or disability insurance.

Manage Your Blood Tests: Some labs took more blood than others for the same test. One lab took so much blood from me, despite my concern, that it triggered shingles. My doctor agreed that she ordered too many tests at once and that withdrawing so much blood lowered my immune system. I found out that another lab could have done the tests with less blood.

Pain Assessments: Another area of concern is pain assessments that ask patients to rate their pain on a scale of 1 to 10. This is difficult to do for chronic conditions where the pain varies. There are various types of pain scales, but most fail to adequately assess chronic pain.

Invisible Illness: The issue of invisible illness raises a number of concerns. If people can’t see your pain, they might not believe you have pain. If you don’t look sick, your doctor may overlook critical details for your care.

Multiple Impairments: If you have multiple impairments, others might lose sight of your specific ailments. You might be labeled as someone who just gets sick.

Social Activities: Those with chronic conditions may find it difficult to participate in social activities. Having to follow a special diet can be awkward at social gatherings.

Health Care Trends • I have the utmost respect for practitioners who do their best to help patients.

Clearly, some insurance companies are not allowing doctors time for thorough office visits. Now some hospitals create their own insurance-like setups that bypass insurance companies.

• New technology may help to give accurate diagnoses.

• Personalized medicine and machines that dispense medications may become common.

• Cars that drive themselves are being evaluated and can help those who could otherwise not get out.

It’s so much easier to get the care you need if you understand the healthcare environment and can anticipate problems. What can go wrong frequently goes wrong unless you know what to watch for and you’re willing to manage your care.

What is immediately apparent in these experiments is that, under the right conditions, audible sound has the ability to structure matter into coherent forms, and to hold it in place. Calm Your Restless Legs...Naturally

R

estless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs or feet when resting or trying to sleep. It often results in difficulty falling or staying asleep, leading to fatigue and poor concentration during the day. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Some studies claim that up to 10% of the population may be affected by RLS. People often describe sensations in their legs and feet as “achy, burning, cramping pain, or tingling, crawling, creepy feelings, as if worms or bugs were under the skin.” They typically feel brief improvement once they move the limb. A proposed cause of RLS has to do with poor regulation of a chemical messenger in the nervous system called Dopamine. Over time, this condition may become more severe or spread to the arms or other parts of the body.

Causes of RLS RLS can be hereditary but also occurs secondary to other health conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, diabetes, iron deficiency, kidney disease, or pregnancy. The hereditary form tends to begin earlier in life but may be milder in severity. When RLS occurs during pregnancy, it tends to be most common in the third trimester and resolves following childbirth. A similar but different neurological disorder, called Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD), often occurs along with RLS. Patients with PLMD typically don’t describe the abnormal sensations described above, and may even be completely unaware that their legs twitch/move at night. In this case, it is often the spouse who complains about poor sleep!

From a clinical standpoint, the following question has been shown to be very sensitive and highly specific in identifying patients

who might have RLS; “When you try to relax in the evening or sleep at night, do you ever have unpleasant, restless feelings in your legs that can be relieved by walking or movement?” Here’s an easy way to remember the diagnostic criteria for RLS: “URGE”. Urge to move, Rest induced, Gets better with activity and Evening/nighttime exacerbation.

Treatment The first steps toward resolving RLS should be to identify and treat any underlying cause, such as anemia, diabetes, or peripheral neuropathy, if at all possible. Blood work can be ordered to rule out metabolic problems and a thorough neurologic exam can test for neuropathy. Of note, some neuropathies preferentially affect small nerve fibers and may go undiagnosed unless reactions to pain and temperature are properly examined. Once identified, many neuropathies can be successfully managed without medication. If the underlying cause of RLS is pregnancy, the symptoms should resolve after childbirth. In cases where peripheral neuropathy is the cause, there are several in-office treatments we have found to be helpful. In addition to in-office treatment, the following home suggestions may be helpful.

Avoid Common Triggers Avoid caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, sleep deprivation/excessive fatigue, extreme temperature exposure, and too much or too little exercise.

Avoid Medications that are Known to Aggravate RLS Antidepressants, antihistamines, calcium channel blockers, antinausea and antipsychotic medications all can aggravate RLS. Of course, you should always check with your physician before discontinuing any prescribed medication.

Practice Good Sleep Hygiene Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day. Use your bed only for sleep and sex (no TV or reading in bed). Get more sunlight and moderate exercise during the day. Avoid stimulating activities before bed.

Lifestyle Modifications Avoid getting too much or too little exercise. Schedule sedentary activities such as reading, going to the movies or air travel for the morning hours. Perform exercise and housework later in the day.

Before bed, go for a walk, take a hot bath or engage in a mental activity such as playing solitaire or doing puzzles. Try alternating hot/ cold therapy on your feet before bed.

Consider Medications as a Last Resort Several different kinds of medications are often prescribed for RLS, however, possible side effects and/or drug interactions need to be taken into consideration and should be discussed with your physician. Medications sometimes result in rebound symptoms (worsening of symptoms at the end of a dosing period) or augmentation (symptoms begin earlier in the day and/or become more severe in nature). Because of the way RLS medications affect the brain, many have been linked to side effects including hallucinations, and compulsive behavior such as uncontrollable gambling, excessive eating and shopping, as well as hypersexuality in some people.

When all else fails… some people swear by an old wives’ tale that includes placing a bar of soap under the bed sheets.

Life Cannot Exist Without Enzymes

nzymes are protein molecules necessary to life.

• nearly all biochemical reactions in the body are catalyzed and regulated by enzymes • they deliver vitamins and minerals throughout the body • they are connected to every organ of the body and its functions • they prevent fats from turning rancid, carbohydrates from fermenting, and partially digested proteins from putrefying in the body.

Digestive enzymes are manufactured by the body to help break down food.

Metabolic enzymes also are made by the body; they produce energy and detoxify the cells.

Food enzymes are in raw foods or foods that have not been heated to more than 116 degrees. Food enzymes are not stored in the body for future use.

Plant enzymes are derived from cultivated plant sources. When taken with a meal they aid in the digestion of foods, relieving some of the digestive burden from the body, and helping to correct nutritional imbalances.

When taken one to two hours away from food, certain plant enzymes can be used therapeutically (as anti-inflammatories and blood purifiers, for example) to relieve conditions and discomforts.

The body considers digestion its most important duty. When a newly eaten meal enters the stomach, enzymes are pulled from all systems of the body to get to work immediately on digestion. However, this same enzyme energy is also needed elsewhere to repair, regulate, and reactivate the other systems of the body. These systems have no choice but partial shutdown during digestion…unless the body is being supplemented with more enzymes. Once enzymes have completed their appointed task, they are destroyed. For life to continue, you must have a constant supply of enzymes.

Enzyme-deficient food puts a burden on the digestive system. Partially digested food particles escaping from the gut challenge the immune system. Undigested foods become toxins to the body, providing the perfect nourishment for bad micro-organisms. The balance of the good and bad bacteria is a constant battle. To compensate, the body may steal enzymes from the immune system, compromising it even further. Undigested fats impair the function of blood cells in the immune system by slowing down their circulation. High levels of fat in the blood also block the action of insulin, which can lead to diabetes.

The body responds within a 21 day period to changes in lifestyle. For example, stopping smoking or overeating. The way is paved for a healing process to begin. During the second 21 day cycle, the body begins to become more balanced, adjusting to the changes. In the third 21 day period, the body undergoes transformation. This gives the mind an adequate length of time to accept the changes and to assist and support continued healing.

Health maintenance for life Micro-organisms like parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses thrive on decaying matter. They do not attack healthy, toxin-free tissue. We have been conditioned to think that we treat a particular symptom to make it go away and then resume our old lifestyle. ike their human counterparts, pets are living longer than ever before. At seven to eight years of age our dogs and cats enter their senior years and become more likely to develop health problems.

Some frequently seen diseases in older pets include diabetes, heart and kidney disease, arthritis, cancer, and endocrine disorders.

Being proactive with some simple diagnostic procedures allows veterinarians to diagnose diseases earlier, giving us a better chance of successfully managing illness.

Pay Attention to Behavior Changes: As our pets age, we might notice behavior changes that may be subtle signs of early stages of disease. Signs that should alert us to potential problems include difficulty managing stairs or jumping into the car, stiffness, decreased or increased appetite, increase in water consumption or urine output, weight loss or gain, less interaction with family members or confusion/disorientation, change in haircoat, regular vomiting or diarrhea, and loss of housetraining. When any of these occur, a physical examination is warranted. Your veterinarian will probably recommend tests, which might include blood work, urinalysis, hormone-level testing, radiographs, and screening for infectious disease such as feline leukemia, heartworm disease, etc.

In the best case scenario, all the test results are normal. This is great news, and it allows us to establish a baseline to which future testing can be compared. This also is a good time to discuss some changes you can make in your pet’s diet or exercise regimen, or to consider the addition of supplements to help prevent or slow aging deteriorations.

Early Treatments are More Effective: If, on the other hand, the lab tests reveal some abnormalities, this allows the veterinarian to initiate treatment at the earliest possible stage of disease, thus giving a much greater chance of success. For example, chronic kidney disease is quite common in aging dogs and cats. It most frequently involves a slow decline in kidney function so that early signs are often missed. There is no medication we can give to cure kidney dysfunction, but its progression can be slowed with intervention, and it can be managed with a special diet and supplements. By the time symptoms are obvious, there may be such advanced disease that intervention is unsuccessful and the prognosis is poor. It is much better to diagnose kidney disease in its earliest stages, when we have better success with management techniques such as diet changes, supplement administration, and supplemental fluids.

The Role of Diet: The concerned owner of a senior pet recently mentioned to me that diet and nutrition were topics he wished would be addressed more routinely during his pet’s annual exams.

Diet can be instrumental in preventing and treating many pet diseases. Today there are many prescription diets available to address most

of the diseases that affect senior dogs and cats. Your veterinarian can make specific recommendations as to what diet modifications might be indicated as your pet ages. This is best done based on exam and laboratory results. For instance, if your eight-year-old dog’s senior-wellness blood work is all normal, a simple switch to the senior version of his current diet might be all that is needed.

If, on the other hand, his tests reveal mildly elevated kidney values, your veterinarian will most likely recommend transitioning to a prescription diet specifically designed to help slow the progression of kidney disease.

Sophisticated Testing Allows for FineTuning: Sophisticated lab testing can be performed on surprisingly small blood and urine samples. Comprehensive senior-health panels offered by either in-house laboratories or regional diagnostic labs allow veterinarians to diagnose diseases such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s Syndrome in dogs and hyperthyroidism or diabetes mellitus in cats, and then easily monitor response to treatment. This allows for fine-tuning of treatment protocols, minimizing the clinical signs of illness in many cases.

There have been significant medical advances in the management of many common pet diseases, allowing us to extend our pets’ life spans, even in the face of serious illness. In our area, we are fortunate to have the benefit of many veterinary specialty practices providing advanced care in oncology, endocrine, orthopedic and other diseases. Often, a veterinary general practitioner will recommend contacting a regional referral center for expanded treatment options.

Hospice Care: When a disease process reaches its final stages, veterinarians might offer hospice care, often done in the home.

This allows us to insure that a pet’s last days are as comfortable and pain-free as possible. The array of pain control medications available is quite extensive, and can be used to control the pain of osteoarthritis, cancer, and other disease processes, allowing a pet to remain comfortable at home for as long as possible.
