hat would you do if you discovered that every incompletion in your life was holding you back from manifesting your dreams? Until you do this, you will have a hard time manifesting what you want because you will be sending the universe a message that you don’t trust yourself.

Not only do we need to keep the agreements we make with others, more importantly, we need to keep the agreements we make with ourselves. Are you true to yourself? Do you make commitments to yourself and then break them to please others? How many times have you made a commitment to lose weight, exercise, eat healthier and then failed to do so? How many times have you given up sacred time meant for yourself because someone else needed you to do something? Once you realize the impact these actions have on your ability to manifest your hopes and dreams, you will begin to take broken commitments very seriously.

My work with a transformational coach over the last six months inspired me to write this publisher’s letter. I’ve been amazed at the results I’ve achieved in my personal and professional life simply by cleaning up my past and being in integrity.

I’m realizing more and more every day that where I am in my life is a result of being accountable to myself and others and calling myself out when I'm not. Some of the huge wins: my relationship with my mom (pictured with me above!) is closer when I let her love me in her own way; my relationship with my significant other is amazing when I admit that the fight we’re having is about me having to be right and making him wrong; my business starts growing exponentially when I take the time to work closely with my staff instead of avoiding conflicts and making excuses about being too busy.

Were any of these situations easy? Are you kidding me?? They were scary and uncomfortable. No one said the work was easy, but I’m learning to move into the fear and pain and when I come out on the other side, I’m finding that my relationships are deeper, stronger and much more fulfilling. It takes tremendous courage to speak the truth, to be accountable, to ask for forgiveness and to make new commitments. Life will bring you many opportunities to deepen this practice or stay safe.

Dr. Robert Murphy Making Milestones at the Center for Natural Medicine

ongratulations goes out to Robert Murphy, N.D., RN as he celebrates his 35th year as a licensed naturopathic physician. Dr. Murphy started his health care career as a critical care nurse and then furthered his education at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Oregon. “After 35 years of naturopathic practice, I still love what I do” he states. He is well known by his patients as “Dr. Bob” and is dedicated to connecting with them emotionally and spiritually.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Matters of the Heart: An Integrative Approach to Cardiovascular Health

I

often hear from my patients about the health assessment done at milestone years such as the colonoscopy, mammograms, blood tests, stress tests, PSA testing and the list goes on and on. The purpose of this testing is for early detection of disease and disease prevention but I have learned some sobering facts about the effectiveness, or lack of effectiveness, of some of these screenings. Of particular concern to me are those tests dealing with cardiovascular disease.

According to John Hopkins School of Medicine, cardiovascular disease is the cause of more deaths than cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents combined. And the latest data tells us that about 1/3 of all cardiovascular deaths could be simply prevented. We know that there have been successful natural interventions that will work when disease is caught early.

One of the most important first steps in the process of diseaseproofing your heart is to identify risks. One of the more unique risk prevention tools is Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) and Digital Pulse Analysis. This is an exciting, non-invasive method of looking at heart physiology that is backed by more than 25 years of advanced research in medical physics. By using pulse oxymetry and advances in software, this system can measure risk of arterial stiffness and blood flow. According to the Framingham Heart Study, adding PWV technology to assessment lead to significant reclassification and identification of those at risk and led to better interventions.

These are just a few of the tools we use in an advanced integrative medical practice. Others include the Boston Heart Diagnostics which is the best of the best at looking for inflammation and various damaging cholesterol particles that can harm your heart. Medical Infrared Thermography looks for inflammation anywhere in the body especially carotid arteries and breast cancer risk. Hormone testing for excess estrogen or deficient hormones gives us far more information than the basic stress or cholesterol test.

The best part of all this testing is that when the problem is uncovered, you can develop a specific plan to restore function and reverse risk. One tool that may not be considered but should is acupuncture. By inserting fine pins into specific points on the body, we can increase flexibility in the vessels, reduce blood pressure, increase blood flow and stabilize hormones in the nervous system that damage the heart such as cortisol and adrenaline. With the use of targeted supplements and herbal formulas, inflammation can be reduced and coronary plaque can be addressed. There are many other usual treatment strategies that are safe and noninvasive such as including plenty of essential fats and CoQ10 in your diet. The key is to have an organized assessment and know the tools that can help. Seek out professionals who are skilled in the use of these tools and let them design a program that addresses your needs.

Living our Values

he road to happiness and a meaningful life may be traveled with many disciplines - simplicity, mindfulness, gratefulness, love, faith and harmony. However, it is paved by our lived values and our actions. The core of many philosophies and therapies lies in identifying and living our values, those things that are most important to us. Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher, wrote in Discourses, 1.26.15: “An important place to begin in philosophy is this: a clear perception of one’s ruling principle.” Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) uses a similar starting point. The six core therapeutic processes of ACT are: Contacting the present moment (Being in the here and now); Defusion (Watch your thinking); Acceptance (Opening up to things as they are); Self-as-context ( The observing self or pure awareness); Values (Knowing what matters) and Commitment to Action (Doing what it takes).

Discovering what one values is for me the starting point of healing and living a meaningful life. Fully experiencing and knowing what one values begins with awareness of ourselves and what is happening in the present moment. Meditation, prayer, physical exercise, mindfulness practices and keeping a gratitude journal are beginning steps for being aware of the present moment and oneself. One exercise one can do is to set up scales. Writing down and examining areas of our lives such as: family; parenting; intimate relationships; friendships; work; education; physical selfcare; and involvement in community. We set up a scale from 1 -10 with 1 being not important at all to 10 which is extremely important.

Once the initial scale is complete, one can then reflect on the past week and rate how consistent our actions were in living our value. We can set up a second scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is not being at all consistent with the value and 10 is being completely consistent with the value. Developing scales that allow us to clearly see what is said to be important versus how consistent we are in living the value allows us to either change our behavior or change the relative importance of the said value.

Once I am clear about my values, then I have a blueprint on how to make decisions and how to act in difficult and everyday situations. I always have the end in mind. Today I had a conversation with a colleague. I asked how they solved puzzle mazes in the newspaper when they were young. They reported they started at the beginning and would often get stuck, sometimes frustrated and angry. I always started from the end and worked backwards. I believe that if I know where I want to be, it is easier to work backwards to find where I am in relationship to where I want to be. The Spa at Litchfield Hills: An Inspiring Story

W

hen the Litchfield Spa came up for sale in 2004, Megan Mae Harpin was just 19 years old and attending Babson College. With a passion for the spa industry and an entrepreneurial spirit, she suggested an idea to her parents that they buy spa. Her father said no. But, he encouraged Megan to purchase it herself and become an entrepreneur at the age of 19. Without any experience in business, most teenagers probably would have gotten discouraged and given up their dream. Not Megan. This amazing young woman joined a hatchery and mentorship program at Babson, applied for a small business loan for women and she got it! She came back every weekend to work on the grand opening, starting with 8 staff members. After one year, her staff had grown to 13 and then 30 people.

In 2016, at 85% capacity and starting to see a lot of competition from other area spas, Megan knew the Litchfield Spa was due for an overhaul. Again, her knack for business and knowledge of the industry served her well. hen you drive up to Winvian Farm, you feel as if you are visiting a friend’s country home on a lovely estate. The good news is you will stay in your own one of a kind country home on the 113-acre property. Winvian Farm consists of 18 eclectic cottages all uniquely designed by different architects.

Each one is more interesting than the next. I stayed in a 3-story cottage called Stable. Chef Paul Pearson Provides Delicious Delights at Community Table Restaurant

By Frances Wall Higgins rowing up in Yorkshire England, Chef Paul Pearson knew exactly what he wanted to do by the age of 12. He became fascinated with food and enjoyed eating out because of how special everyone felt. “I was keen to learn cooking and my grandmother taught me in the beginning,” he said, as we sat enjoying a plate of New England cheeses at Community Table, a favorite local restaurant known for its acclaimed food, cocktails and chic relaxed environment in New Preston, CT.

For his first job, he worked for the renowned Chef Raymond Blanc at Le Petit Blanc in Oxford, England. “My education soared in such a busy kitchen. I learned recipes for dressings and soups that I still use today. I also learned the regimen of cooking from Raymond Blanc. His French influence and techniques were vital,” Paul said. Next, he worked in London for another famous chef, Marco Pierre White. Marco is a British chef, restaurateur, and television personality from Leeds. White has been dubbed the first celebrity chef, and the “enfant terrible” of the UK restaurant scene. He was called the godfather of modern cooking and was the Head Chef in ITV's Hell's Kitchen television series.

Then home beckoned and he worked at a small family restaurant, Melton’s, where he learned Pastry work and seasonal food techniques. His international experience took him to the Lenox Relais Chateaux in Blantyre, a town in the Scottish Highlands, then another Relais Chateaux property in Puerto Rico as Sous Chef where he met his wife.

During these years he experimented with flavors, and his own dishes evolved (some of which you can see today on the Community Table menu like his famous Yucca snack and Lamb with lentils).

He and his wife moved to Chicago and he worked at North Pond for Bruce Sherman who insisted on serving local and seasonal food. Chef Sherman taught Paul to utilize exceptional ingredients at the height of their season, and this had a significant influence on Paul. (Community Table has a lovely kitchen garden in the back yard).

Finally, his first Head Chef position was offered to him by the Relais Chateaux in Watch Hill, RI. Here he made many of the contacts that he uses to source meals for Community Table today.

About Community Table Jo-Ann Makovitzky became the new partner and General Manager of Community Table in 2018. She is a Culinary Institute of America trained Chef and former co-owner of Tocqueville and the Michelin star restaurant 15 East, in New York. She has high standards and smartly hired Paul Pearson as Head Chef whose fantastic education and experience is evident in his creative menu.

Chef Paul Pearson draws on the culmination of all of his education and traveling experiences to create a unique menu and atmosphere at Community Table. He likes to experiment with flavors that he tried in other restaurants and wants people’s night out to be an exceptional experience like he enjoyed so long ago as a boy. Some of the highlights on the dinner menu are: The Seared Smoked Scallops with crushed celery root, cabbage, apple, and truffle emulsion; Roasted Lamb with braised lentils, sautéed kale, elderberry caper, and preserved tomato gremolata; and Roasted King Trumpet Mushrooms, maitake, parsnip puree, fennel, and black olive “jus.”

Dessert standouts are: Warm Pistachio Cake with hibiscus poached rhubarb, cardamom sauce and Bittersweet Chocolate Cremeux with salted coffee caramel caramelized cocoa nibs. Their Sunday brunch menu has nice twists like Pan Seared Gulf Shrimp with creamy grits and Prime NY Steak and Eggs and Parker House Rolls. 3 Simple Steps to Alleviate Anxiety & Stress

D

iagnosed anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, and women are twice as likely to be affected than men. These statistics are based on those who actually sought medical attention. In reality, these figures are much higher.

The good news is people who have chronic or occasional anxiety and/or panic attacks are often highly intelligent, passionate, caring, thoughtful, creative human beings. Your wonderful, creative mind that causes your anxiety is the very one that will lead you to a more relaxed, joyful life. The bad news is fear doesn’t go away, nor does anxiety magically disappear. There are no magic wands to wave over you, however, you are more powerful than you realize!

Three Important Steps: 1. You Are Healthy. If you have a clean bill of health from your physician, other than being told that you need to relax and/or that you need to handle stress better, then don’t talk yourself into an illness. Believe what your doctor has told you. Your words are powerful, and they can be used as weapons or healing tonics. These feelings are just unpleasant, not dangerous.

2. Breathe. I know you’ve read and been told many times to, “take a deep breath” and all will be well, and it is that easy.

Here’s a quick trick: imagine a baby’s chubby little belly rising up and down, natural and relaxed. A baby knows how to breathe correctly and so did you at one time. It’s the way we’re designed to breathe. You just forgot how to do it

along the road of life. Keep the image of the relaxed breathing of a baby in your mind. Now, relax your stomach muscles as if you were that baby or a Raggedy Ann Doll, limp and loose all over. Take in a breath through your nose keeping your mouth closed. When you see and feel your stomach rising, slowly exhale through your nose again. Practice keeping your mouth closed, using only your nostrils to breathe in and out. When you do this, your brain automatically registers that there’s nothing to fear; therefore, no adrenaline or cortisol is pumped through your body in preparation for a “fight or flight” reaction. Your body does not know the difference between actual fear and imagined fear. If you breathe rapidly, your brain registers that something is wrong; alerting you to do something. When you start relaxing your breath, and belly breathe, your brain registers that all is well.

3. Stay In The Present. I’m sure you have heard the expression, “live in the moment,” but what does that really mean?

Well, not staying in the present means that you are dealing with classic anticipatory fear and that you’re living in the unrealistic future. For example, you’re afraid of entering an elevator for fear it might get stuck, and then you begin to worry about feeling claustrophobic. You are concerned with the “what ifs” in life.

What if you feel dizzy, faint, scream or even die of lack of air! If you change that to a “so what” and say it, even if you don’t believe it at first, your mind will soon accept that attitude and you just may find yourself traveling through life much easier.

Your mind conjures up all of these fearful thoughts, even before you step into the elevator. The problem is that your mind does not know if this event is really happening or if you’re just thinking that it may happen. On a cellular level, when you go through these future catastrophic thoughts you put your body through a lot of stress.

Staying in the present means just that - stay in the present moment. Let’s use the same elevator scenario which you can change to a plane, car, or whatever you fear most. Look at where you’re standing. Are you really trapped? No. Are you breathing?

Yes! By focusing on what is happening right now, you can train your mind not to race forward. Notice the floor numbers as they light up and think of this as an interesting experience. Stay in the moment. Notice a person standing near you. Observe the colors and the sounds, and be glad that you’re alive and that you can feel and see.

By diverting and focusing your mind on things other than your fears, before you know it, the experience is over. Should you run into a bout of “what ifs,” try this: “What if I enjoy my life? “What if I can handle everything that life sends my way?” Haven’t you been doing that all along anyway?

Debunking Fad Diets

I

t seems like every few months, there is a new diet fad. Let’s talk about the most recent popular fad diets.

Ketogenic Diet

A healthier way to do a modified version of the ketogenic diet would be to eat a very reduced amount of carbs, say 50 grams, for short periods of time, periodically. But, in the counting of carbohydrates, be sure not to count non-starchy veggies, such as leafy greens and celery. Helpful products, such as MCT oil or supplemental ketone salts, that can help mimic ketosis and those can be helpful for some. There are also some new fast-mimicking diet programs that supply you with whole, nutritious, plant-based foods, providing everything you need for a 5-day “fast” (you’re still eating, but only about 40% of the calories you would normally eat). This option allows you to still get your veggies, some fiber and protein and the severe calorie reduction, or quasi- fast is only for five days and only a few times a year, with proven benefits.

Leafy, green (non-starchy) vegetables, although they are carbs, should NEVER be

counted towards a “max” number of carbs per day or limited in any way. They should be eaten all day, every day, with their carbohydrate content ignored. In fact, these foods should make up more than half your plate, some raw, some cooked, with the starchy carbs making up a very small part of a meal.

The more complex the carb, the better – as this means it takes time to convert to sugar.

Instead of a quick rise and fall in blood sugar, which causes all sorts of problems, complex carbs like lentils, provide a slow release of sugar for steady energy over the day.

Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is popular these days, but don’t practice intermittent fasting by eating a late dinner and skipping breakfast. While this technically counts as an intermittent fast, it is NOT healthy to eat right before bed, nor to routinely skip breakfast. The healthier option would be to eat an early dinner and not eat again until the next morning. The goal is to eat all of your food in an 8 to 10-hour window during daylight hours and have no snacks, just water, the rest of the time. This lowers insulin and burns fat.

Perhaps the most dangerous fad diet is water or juice fasting. These diets are touted as quick ways to detox, but what actually occurs is just the opposite.

If you do a water or juice cleanse, you’re not eating any protein, nor are you getting the phytonutrients or fiber from vegetables.

These nutrients are what allow us to safely transform and eliminate toxins. Nutrition is the antidote to toxicity. You may instinctively know this if you’ve tried one of those water cleanses – any detox program that makes you feel sick is not

a good detox program. Headaches and exhaustion means you are pulling out more stored toxins than your detox system can handle, and the overflow is making you feel, well…toxic.

Plant-Based Diet The best diet, overall, is a plant-based diet, whether that be the Mediterranean diet, or traditional Asian or South American diets. Plants speak to our genes and our microbiome and provide nutrients we can’t get anywhere else. Just as importantly, plants give us fiber that we cannot digest, but that the good bacteria in our guts do digest. Those bacteria, in turn, make many vitamins and short-chain fatty acids like butyrate that heal and feed our gut cells, as well as countless other molecules that our bodies need, but cannot produce ourselves. This amazing, co-dependent and synergistic system of our microbiome requires real plant food to work properly.

Every cell in our bodies needs the nutrients that plant foods provide, those phytonutrients provide protection for our cells from those inevitable free radicals that living produces. Natural Approaches to Behavioral and Neurological Issues in Pets

eurological diseases run the gamut in dogs and cats, from behavioral issues like anxiety and fear that can dramatically effect an animals' lifestyle and management, to medical issues like seizures and autoimmune brain inflammation.

We are fortunate that Lyme disease is not a known contributor to chronic neurological signs in dogs or cats, as cats have never been shown to get infected by Lyme organisms and dogs are easily tested and treated in the early stages of disease. Tick borne organisms do rarely cause severe neurological signs in dogs, but again, these are typically responsive to antibiotic therapy.

While other neurological issues are rarely so simple to treat, there are many ways to address them successfully.

Anxiety Anxiety is an exploding diagnosis in our dog and cat populations. For many rescue animals, their early experiences have primed them to be anxious. Even being in the womb while the mother was under a lot of stress can change brain development in the young. Poor breeding can perpetuate a genetic makeup where anxiety is programmed as a behavioral survival mode.

Poor nutrition or undiagnosed pain can contribute to anxiety behaviors, too. The current social context dogs and cats live in may also contribute. A few decades ago, many dogs were still roaming off leash, living on their own rhythms outside, finding their own social lives, and perhaps fulfilling a job they had been genetically selected to do (such as hunting, herding, or guarding). Many cats were still indoor/outdoor creatures and did hunting on their own. These days, we experience more pressures from dense social living and more adults working outside the home. Many dogs are only ever outside on a leash, which protects them from getting lost and from unexpected aggressive encounters.

Some dogs may have no canine social life besides encounters on their outings, and others have social lives at dog parks where there are large numbers of dogs and where the members can change significantly from day to day. Some dogs experience social isolation when the owners are away for large portions of the day, as we have fewer household members serving as homemakers. Most of our cats are exclusively indoors to protect them from cars and predators, and to protect our local wildlife. Our increasing desire to protect our animal family has worked, but there have been some increased social pressures that may make some animals more vulnerable to anxiety.

What is the root cause? You have made the decision that you will not do anything about the clutter and disorganization that is in your environment. That indecision started at the beginning of the development of your clutter.

We tend to put the blame of issues or problems in our life or circumstances on people. I see this over and over in working with individuals regarding their clutter or disorganization. So many times I hear, “this is my husband or wife’s fault,” or “these children of mine.” Yet when we start going through the clutter it truly doesn’t have anything to do with the individual they are blaming.

Getting to the Root Cause of Clutter

ll of us at one time or another can live amongst the midst of clutter.

There can be many reasons why the clutter happens in our life but there is truly only one root cause. The clutter could be “situational.” Maybe there is a family member who is terminally sick, or you lost your job, or better yet just got a new job and you are a little overwhelmed. Hence, your home has taken a back burner and the clutter has built up. “Situational” clutter is easily remedied. Once that situation “calms” down, you can get back to the focus of your home and tackle the clutter.

But there is another type of clutter and that is “chronic.” You have lived in clutter all or most of your life. It has become your life style. It overwhelms you and you feel you have no choice but to live this way. I’m here to “debunk” that myth and help you get to the “root cause of your clutter” be it “situational” or “chronic.”

Your mind right now might be flashing through reasons why there is clutter in your life, home, or space. Some of those reasons could be the following, but know this is not the root cause: 1. You purchase more than you need or have the space for.

5. You love to shop and use that as a way to bring comfort into your life. Because you keep bringing items into your home but never take any out, eventually you are in the midst of clutter.

6. You hold onto items that you don’t need, use or even like because you feel guilty parting with it because the person that gave it to you will be upset.

7. You think you will need this specific item “someday.”

8. You don’t want specific items, but you want to be sure it gets to a “good home.” So, until you find that “good home” you will hold onto it. Only problem is you never make the effort to find that “good home.”

9. If I put this (you name it) away, I’ll forget I have it or will forget to deal with it.

10. You let your mail pile up and hardly deal with it.

This list is about 10 reasons/issues that can bring on clutter, but we have not discussed the root cause. This root cause applies to both situational or chronic disorganization/clutter. It’s simple and basic but one that people have a hard time looking at.

The root cause is that simple and basic. Once you take ownership of the root cause of your clutter, healing can begin.

Once you take ownership of the situation you have gotten yourself into, you will feel empowered to make changes. You may not know how to begin or even how to create organizational systems and that’s ok. The decision that you are responsible for the clutter and disorganization that you live with will give you the peace and power to move forward and find someone that can help you make these changes. Take ownership. Don’t continue to blame others for your circumstance. Feel empowered to begin a journey of peaceful living in your life and in your space.

Lyme Disease: The Great Imitator

I

t is common for many individuals to see over 5 doctors before being diagnosed with a Lyme infection and is why it is known as the “great imitator.” When diagnosed and treated early, Lyme is easy to fix, however, if not treated, it can lead to a multitude of symptoms including joint and body pain, fatigue, headaches, cognitive issues, neurological and sleep disturbances. Unfortunately, these are common symptoms I see in my practice daily and clinical judgement is needed to decide on timely treatment.

Diagnosis Lyme disease diagnosis continues to grow annually. There are about 3,000 cases of Lyme disease in CT annually. The CDC has estimated that about 10 times more people are diagnosed with Lyme disease than reported making that estimate closer to 30,000 diagnosed each year in CT. Though first found in Connecticut, Lyme disease has affected individuals throughout the country and abroad. Both children and adults are affected with the greatest frequency in ages 5-14 and 45-64 years of age. The summer months from June through August, are peak times, however, cases are reported in each month of the year. Lyme disease is trans-

mitted by members of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex; black-legged ticks often transmit other tick-borne infections such as Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma. Ticks usually find themselves in warm, moist areas of the body like armpits, hair or groin area making it difficult to detect; they can be as small as a poppy seed.

Diagnosis of Lyme is tricky; it is both a clinical decision based on symptoms and relevant bloodwork. The current blood test only detects antibodies. It is an effective assessment for later stages of Lyme disease, but doesn’t always pick up on early infections since antibodies will not show positive until after 4-6 weeks of infection.

Some of the classic signs are a circular rash (or bull’s eye), flu-like symptoms, or arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly knees.

Treatments Common initial treatments in conventional medicine are antibiotics if diagnosed; one of the first lines of antibiotics considered are Doxycycline and Amoxicillin for children under 8 years of age for 3-4 weeks. If symptoms aren’t resolved, further antibiotic usage may be recommended.

Retreatment with antibiotics have failed to consistently resolve symptoms for patients.

Botanical medicine is an alternative treatment to antibiotics or in conjunction with antibiotics and has been rated as the most effective alternative treatment.

Here are some common herbs that have been researched to be effective for Lyme disease: Artemesinin: Artemesia annua, also known as wormwood, has been demonstrated to be anti-parasitic and anti-malarial. It has been shown effective in combination with drug therapy and effective for co-infections, most specifically Babesia.

It has shown to be powerfully effective against parasite species and has strong anti-viral properties.

Andrographis: Andrographis has shown to be effective against a wide range of parasitical organisms. Its function includes anti-spirochetal effect, modulates autoimmunity, protects the body from damage from spirochetes, ameliorates some of the symptoms of Lyme and is anti-inflammatory in nature. Andorgraphis has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier treating bacterial infections (including Lyme). Typical dosages for herbs are 300-400mg 1-3x per day; side effects may include symptoms like dizziness and should be monitored by doctor’s recommendations.

Curcumin: Curcumin helps to support some of the protocols used for Lyme.

It helps to increase diversity of the gut microbiome, improve intestinal barrier function, support immune system, and decrease overall inflammation. It is effective in reducing pain, often associated with Lyme, and decreases some of the herxheimer dieoff reaction.

Essential Oils: Oregano, Garlic, Myrrh: Lyme produces biofilm which makes it difficult for treatment to work as effectively.

It is important to look at support of reducing biofilms in the system. Oregano for example has been shown to dramatically reduce biofilm microcolonies. It has shown to increase good bacteria in the gut like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus.

There are also various Lyme protocols that a practitioner may use for alternative treatment. At our office, I often provide a combination of support including diet, herbals and immune system support. Some of our commonly used herbal protocols for Lyme and other tick-borne infections include Modified Cowden, Zhang’s protocol, Beyond Balance, Buhner’s protocol, and low dose immunotherapy. Low dose immunotherapy is a common modality we use in our office which helps to reprogram immune tolerance and decrease immunemediated inflammatory disorders.

In addition to herbal medicine treatment, it is also important to look at supporting overall immune function, especially if Lyme disease symptoms have persisted.

Proper support of gastrointestinal functioning is critical, especially if a patient is on antibiotics or has extensive previous history of antibiotics, to restore proper gut bacteria; it is generally recommended to be on a high dose of probiotics to support chronic use of antibiotics. The immune system is equally critical to support as it may become out of balance as a result of the infection and the system may lack the ability to recover fully. I would look at the following for immune support: Mushrooms: These have shown to improve overall immune function, reduce inflammation and stress and boost antioxidants in the system. It helps to reduce the overall autoimmune reaction.

In clinical practice, I have found diet is a key component in managing symptoms related to Lyme disease. We generally recommend consumption of anti-inflammatory foods, largely plant based. The Alkaline diet has been helpful in reducing some of the symptoms experienced in Lyme disease.

It is important to reduce any other environmental triggers that may aggravate Lyme.

Research has shown that environmental triggers play a role in autoimmune diseases and decrease functioning of the immune system. Mold exposure has often aggravated some of the Lyme symptoms my patients have experienced, and our practice looks to support decreasing of those exposures and support through supplementation.

In addition to reducing environmental exposures, prevention should be the first initial step. Here are some good prevention tips to consider, particularly in the spring and summer months: • Wear long pants, long sleeves and long socks when going outside.

• When coming inside from the outdoors, immediately check your skin including scalp, and ensure you do not have ticks present on body.

• Use a natural bug spray or repellant.

• Pets often carry ticks into the house.

Inspect pets and ensure they are not bringing into the house or on furniture.

Diet, lifestyle, and herbal supplementation have shown to be an effective means to support Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. It is important to work with a provider who has expertise in Lyme and other tick-borne infections (e.g. member of ILADS) to provide a comprehensive, individualistic approach (specifically detailed) plan and manage symptoms throughout the continuum of care.

Natural Treatment for Menstrual Migraines

A

ccording to the National Headache Foundation, approximately 60% of women suffering from migraines get menstrual migraines. Menstrual migraines can start 2 days before the period begins and up to three days after the period ends. Hormones can trigger menstrual migraines during ovulation, menses, perimenopause and menopause.

Menstrual Migraine Symptoms • One-sided, throbbing • Nausea inducing with or without vomiting • Sensitivity to light and sound • Typically are not accompanied by an aura Migraine diaries are a great way to evaluate the cause of your migraines. Common triggers for migraines that are not hormone related include: poor sleep, alcohol, high tyramine foods, smoked or cured meat, banana, avocado, chocolate, excessive caffeine, changes in weather, stress, food additives like MSG, artificial sweeteners, inhaling strong odors, missing meals, and fatigue. A diary can help rule out any of these culprits as additional contributing factors of migraines.

If you suffer migraines and are on hormonal birth control, you need to discuss the option of a low estrogen pill with your prescribing doctor. Reducing the amount of estrogen in your monthly birth control can help reduce menstrual migraines, and also lower your chances of ischemic stroke. Women suffering migraines with aura are at a higher risk of ischemic stroke when using combined oral contraceptives, according to American College of Cardiology.

Those not on hormonal birth control are often encouraged to go on birth control to regulate their migraine symptoms, but there are other options.

Having your hormone levels evaluated through bloodwork, urinary testing or salivary testing is the first step to correcting menstrual migraines. Looking at other blood levels may be performed too, such as serotonin metabolite level and red blood cell magnesium. Serotonin is the primary hormonal trigger for headaches, and is believed by some researchers to be an inherited disorder that affects the way serotonin is metabolized. Estrogen is the primary hormone causing menstrual migraines, though progesterone level changes may also play a part for some women. Most people don’t know only 1% of serotonin in the human body is in the central

nervous system, the other 99% is found in other tissues, primarily plasma, the gastro-intestinal tract, and immune tissues.

Estrogen and Serotonin Connection Serotonin acts as a hormone regulating various physiological functions including vasodilation, clotting, recruitment of immune cells, gastro-intestinal motility and initiation of uterine contraction. Estrogen affects how serotonin receptors are distributed and function in the body and concentrations of serotonin can be altered with natural and pharmacological estrogen. Imagine correcting the hormonal status of estrogen to then see mood, PMS, menstrual migraine and other undesired menstrual symptoms resolve because serotonin is functioning optimally in the body. Once hormone levels have been evaluated, treatment options may include vitamins, supplements, herbal formulas, and bodywork therapies.

20 Ways to Refresh Your Body This Spring

pring is here and a perfect time to do some spring cleaning.

This year focus on cleaning the toxins out of your body in addition to your closet. Begin thinking about where toxins might be in your home so you can decrease daily exposure and nourish your body in a way that supports its innate ability to detoxify, regenerate and thrive.

10. Avoid toxic hair color. Look for salons that use organic hair color. Rootz Salon in Collinsville, CT is my personal local favorite.

What happens when our bodies are overloaded with toxins?

Our immune system becomes compromised because the liver is using up many important nutrients to filter out these toxins which leaves us run down, susceptible to infection and at risk of developing disease. Plus, our fat cells do a great job of storing toxins resulting in excess weight gain.

12. Avoid plastic and plastic wrap. Plastic leaches into food and drink and is a hormone disrupter. Don’t let it come into contact with food or beverages including those plastic coffee cup lids and Keurig pods. Use glass, ceramic, or stainless steel.

Here are my top 20 ways to clean out those toxins: 1. Eat whole foods from nature and an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits. 8-10 servings per day, as colorful as possible and include cruciferous veggies which aid in detoxification.

Choose organic when possible. Check out the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists at www.ewg.org.

2. Eat clean animal protein only. Organic pastured chicken, 100% grass-fed/pastured beef, wild caught fish and seafood.

3. Hydrate! Start your day (before coffee) with 16 oz of purified water. Add a splash of fresh lemon juice for added detox. The daily goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces each day.

4. Exercise. Rebounding enhances detoxification by flushing the lymphatic system so try Bounce class.

5. Consider Intermittent Fasting. Begin with a 12 hour overnight fast and work up to 16-18 hours. Studies show this to be an effective way to improve insulin resistance, generate new mitochondria and lose weight.

6. Sleep. Studies show that lack of sleep can cause weight gain, poor concentration, and decreased immune function. Shoot for a minimum of 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.

7. Remove sugar from your diet. Sugar in all forms can be toxic and increase risk of fatty liver, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

8. Clean up personal care products and cosmetics. Never put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t feel comfortable eating.

9. Avoid chemical sunscreens. Look for mineral based, non-nano options. www.ewg.org

11. Use only natural cleaning products. Make them yourself or find non-toxic brands that you like. There may be some trial and error here. www.ewg.org (Guide to Healthy Cleaning). Ditch the fabric softener.

13. Avoid canned foods. Can linings contain BPA or other toxic coatings that are hormone disrupters. Buy in glass whenever possible.

14. Keep aluminum foil and aluminum cookware away from food.

Studies show a link between aluminum and cognitive decline/ dementia. Use unbleached parchment paper to line pans or wrap food.

15. Avoid dry cleaning chemicals. Let clothes air outside or find an organic (less toxic) dry cleaner. Better yet, hand wash if possible.

16. Filter shower and bath water. Absorbing chlorine through your skin and inhaling it daily can impact health, especially thyroid health. https://www.showerfilterstore.com 17. Ditch old non-stick cookware. Switch to ceramic cast iron, cast iron or high gauge stainless steel. If you must have a nonstick pan, make sure it is safe non-stick and PFOA and PTFE free.

18. Keep indoor air as clean as possible. Avoid artificial air fresheners and scented candles. Look for soy or beeswax candles that are fragrance free or diffuse essential oils instead. Have your indoor air quality tested and if necessary purify the air. 19. Keep yard weed and pest free naturally. Protect your home from carpenter ants with essential oils! A local company is http://www.ecochoicepest.com. Ask for their green option.

20. Avoid X-rays as much as possible. Ask for the thyroid guard when getting dental x-rays or your mammogram. Follow an antioxidant supplement protocol the day of your mammogram to mitigate the effects of radiation exposure.

Naturopathic Management for Menopause

M

enopause is defined as the cessation of your periods, which is caused by the body’s decreased production of sex hormones; estrogen and progesterone. This event could happen naturally by age or could be a result of surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus.

Most women will experience the beginning of peri-menopause and menopause generally in their late 40’s. Typical estrogen production will start decreasing around age 50.

There are three phases of menopause: 1) the climacteric phase in which the periods become irregular; 2) actual menopause which is the last menstrual cycle, diagnosed only in retrospect; and 3) post-menopause which begins one year after the cessation of the menses. As estrogen decreases, symptoms associated with menopause may occur. Both the onset of menopause and side effects vary. For some, could be a gradual decline in the frequency and duration of menses, where others could be an abrupt cessation.

Women could experience one, some or none of the below symptoms as well as experiences that are not on this list.

• Changes in the menses: heavier or lighter, more or less frequent.

• Emotional/mood changes: more or less labile, mood may be unpredictable, may be more or less optimistic.

• Body changes: more or less vaginal discharge, vaginal lining may become drier, skin may become drier, “hot flashes”, headaches, fatigue, weight changes, bone density changes.

• Infections: may be more disposed to vaginal or urinary tract infections.

• Bone mass: the decrease in circulating estrogen limits the body’s ability to remodel bones. This can result in a decrease of bone mass.

• Blood lipid levels: potential increase of both total cholesterol and LDL. These problems could be well managed with balanced nutrition and appropriate nutritional supplements.

• Low energy levels and hot flashes.

Factors such as prior health history and fitness levels may affect menopausal symptoms and changes. Naturopathic medicine can offer you different types of modalities to help you cope with your health and nutritional concerns.

Naturopathic Medicine Therapies Nutrition: Managing menopause using dietary means points to emphasis on plant-based food for potential benefits of phytoestrogens, soluble fiber, and other components, which may help to add to the regulation of blood cholesterol. A special diet to prevent osteoporosis is probably the single most important factor in the management of menopause. A diet that is high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat, protein, and sugar is generally recommended. In addition, a naturopathic doctor can make specific diet recommendations tailored to a woman’s health issues and personal needs.

Nutritional Supplements: The need for certain minerals, vitamins, or glandular supplementation may be indicated for some menopausal women. Use of these supplements will be determined from the overall evaluation of physical, emotional, and mental health. Your doctor should take a close look at mineral supplementation such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, and other trace minerals.

Botanicals: There are very specific plant extracts that have the ability to restore normal hormonal balance. Women who have hot flashes or mood changes find that they feel dramatic improvements within 1-2 weeks with the use of plant extracts.

A comprehensive plan using other naturopathic approaches is usually incorporated with the use of the herbal medicines.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a gentle, natural, non-evasive and effective way to deal with the symptoms of menopause. It balances hormones, reducing hot flushes, insomnia and irritability and improves a better sleep.

Homeopathy: Homeopathic medicine is one of the most successful drugless therapies in the treatment of menopausal symptoms. If one has mental/emotional problems including depression, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or anger, homeopathy can offer dramatic relief and stability with no side effects. Homeopathic medicines are made from plant, animal, and mineral substances and are completely drug free.

Hydrotherapy: Being one of the oldest traditions in Naturopathic Medicine, hydrotherapy treatments improve circulation, reduce blood pressure, and improve sleep and digestion. Naturopathic doctors may also use hydrotherapy treatments to treat women with any chronic disease that becomes worse during the menopausal years.

Physical Medicine and Exercise: In joint and muscle problems in particular, the use of naturopathic manipulation and physical therapy may be important.

Weight-bearing exercise is one of the most important components in the prevention of osteoporosis. These recommendations are made on an individual basis. In addition, an exercise program may be part of the

treatment program. Naturopathic Doctors also offer support for how to carry this out within a busy lifestyle.

Counseling: The menopausal period can often be filled with many changes and self-discovery in one’s life. Naturopathic physicians can provide referrals to counseling services to assist in this process.

Women! Let’s Discuss Your Heart Health

T

he CDC stated recently that women are at an all-time high for heart disease, cardiovascular disease or CVD, and that men were actually on par or lowering their relative risks for CVD. This might be associated with how well known the symptoms are and how far the public education reached. The American Heart Association states that between 2013-2016, 44.7% of women aged 20 years old and older had some form of cardiovascular disease. In 2016, 49.0% of women made up the total deaths of related CVD in women. Specifically, in Connecticut according to CDC, CVD is listed as number one for mortality related diseases, followed by cancer in the number two spot, followed by strokefifth, diabetes - seventh and kidney disease - tenth. Four of the top ten diseases associated with death are related with how the heart relates to the body. Here is the kicker, it is not a disease of the old, unfortunately it has a high effect on women of younger ages (think ages 20s to 50s).

Signs and Symptoms These are commonly expressed by women who experience cardiovascular incidents: 1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in chest that lasts a few minutes or comes and goes.

2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach.

3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort/pain.

4. Cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Women are more likely to experience the lesser known symptoms than the traditional symptom picture associated with men and movies. Listen to your body. It is better to trust yourself, run some tests, and know the situation than be scared or in the dark.

Take your health in your hands and address the issue head on.

What Matters How many women do you know, or do you suffer from yo-yo dieting – losing weight only to gain it back within a year? This correlation is a high predictive factor for CVD issues in women. This issue requires finding a lifestyle change that works for you to keep the weight off and keep moving doing activities that you enjoy.

Second, what you put into and onto your body matters. Are you eating foods that are high in hormones or cause inflammation? Inflammation alone will cause the body to hold onto weight.

It is hard for the body to focus on being healthy and heading back to homeostasis (our natural balance in life), when it is focusing on putting out a constant fire. Are you putting chemicals that prohibit your body from sweating or smothering it in a substance that doesn’t allow it to breathe? Our skin is our largest organ, it breathes, it is porous, and permeable (allows passage of materials).

Our skin helps us to detox and remove toxins or substances that no longer serve our body or are in excess, much like the kidneys and urine.

Third, visit with your naturopath to get tested for your risks, current status and make a plan that will fit your needs.

Natural Treatments Your Naturopath may prescribe or incorporate the following into your regime. A deficiency in nutrients can lead to many pathologies within the person. A look into your nutrient profile and bodily requirements may be addressed and supplements or infusions recommended. Homeopathy may be prescribed for bodily, mental, emotional and spiritual symptoms to help restore health and wellbeing.

1. CoQ10 is essential to our mitochondria or our powerhouse to our cells; mitochondria are the power plants that utilize CoQ10 to run our machinery, to provide energy to our bodies, acts as an antioxidant, and has an integral part in our metabolism.

2. Berries have polyphenols and specifically proanthocyanidins (a flavonoid) and are high in antioxidants that help our cardiovascular systems, digestion, brain power, blood sugar and so much more.

3. Exercise. John Hopkins Hospital recommends doing 150 minutes of moderate physical activities, but also suggests three different types of exercise: aerobic (things that make your heart pump, increase your pulse rate), resistance or strength training (like pushups, squats and weight bearing activities such as carrying your 30 pound child around and setting them down only to pick them up 30 seconds later repeating for a few sets of 10) and stretching, flexibility and balance.

4. Quercetin helps reduce inflammation and response to allergies, boost immunity and help conditions of the cardiovascular system, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, bladder infections. Take as a supplement or saute red onions (from 415-1900+ mg of Quercetin).

5. Resveratrol found on grapes (that white stuff you try to wash off), in red wine, and dark chocolate or one may supplement it. A

generally safe dosage for resveratrol is 20 - 100 mg daily and higher with supervision. It is a powerful antioxidant that aids in the treatment of cancers and heart disease among others.

6. Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to almost every single system. It helps blood vessels contract and dilate or open and close to help move blood throughout the body to bring oxygen and nutrients to cells and remove waste from cells. One can eat walnuts, spinach, almonds, avocados and many other nuts and seeds or dark leafy greens. The recommended daily intake is 400mg.

7. Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, a nutrient that is shown to increase Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD), a power antioxidant that helps lower hsCRP (a biomarker of inflammation) along with blood pressure.

8. L-Carnitine is an amino acid that is found in avocados, animal protein and soy products and most of our cells. Studies show it may be highly effective given after heart attack to repair the cells and heart. It helps improve exercise tolerance for those suffering from congestive heart failure.

9. Omega-3-fatty acids help reduce inflammation and build up our cell membranes essentially creating a specific permeable membrane. It helps reduce blood clots and lower blood pressure. Omegas are essential for our nerve health, brain health, digestive tract and cardiovascular system. So, eat your fatty fish (salmon).

10. Monounsaturated fats like avocados, olive oil, pecans, walnuts, almonds, all have monounsaturated fats in them that help lower our “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and raise our “good” cholesterol (HDL). Remember we need to eat fat to make all our hormones that help promote healthy weight and bodily function.

11. Vitamin D should be tested before just taking it, but natural ways to get it are sitting outside with your sleeves and pants rolled up and face exposed. Vitamin D acts like a hormone in our body, it helps our immune system stay healthy. In NHANES III, there was a U-shaped relationship between vitamin D and mortality risk, especially for women with levels lower than 50 ng/L of 25(OH)D. 12. Taurine acts as an antioxidant, improves left ventricular function, and helps the sympathetic nervous system which responds to events of stress. Taurine is also useful in cases of diabetes, infant development (for those nursing mothers), chemotherapy side effects, portal vein hypertension (in cases of scarring of the liver or cirrhosis), exercise performance, anemia, mental performance, lack of sleep and post-surgical procedures to speed up recovery.

Conventional treatments that are generally prescribed for cardiovascular disease (currently by an MD or DO): 1. ACE Inhibitors: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are heart medications that dilate or widen your blood vessels to increase the amount of blood your heart is able to pump and lower your blood pressure.

2. Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers: Constrict or narrow the blood vessels. They also decrease edema in the body by a mechanism that releases salt and fluid from the body.

3. Antiarrhythmics: Keep the heart rhythms on track, caused by irregular electrical activity or nervous system communication to your heart.

yme patients often present as complicated cases with various symptoms that can affect a multitude of body systems. Lyme patients are often more predictably helped by combining both Eastern and Western healing modalities. EAV or electrodermal screening is a modern twist on what has been utilized for thousands of years in the Eastern Healing Arts, where physicians looked at the flow of Qi (Chi) within the meridians to better understand what was going on with their patients, and how to best treat them.

EAV is an excellent tool for uncovering issues within the body's meridian systems and detecting signals of toxins and infections.

Over 3,000 years ago the Chinese developed a system of medicine that was based on the premise of Qi; Qi being the life force. This life force goes throughout our body and is responsible for our health and well-being, as well as our longevity. If the Qi doesn't flow correctly and at the right time of the day, it could lead to imbalances which eventually can manifest as disease. The Chinese now admit that outside factors like environmental influences, toxins, and infections such as the Lyme spirochete, can also block Qi. The blockage of Qi is a significant problem in both Eastern and Western medicine. In Western medicine, the newest term for Qi is "bioelectromagnetic energy." Electromagnetic energy can be quantified, measured, and photographed.

We have different systems in our body, such as the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the nervous system and now we also recognize the "electromagnetic" system. If we cannot achieve full-functioning of the energetic body, then healing cannot occur.

Indeed, you can have the correct diagnosis, appropriate medications (be it Eastern or Western), as well as a compliant patient, but if the Qi is severely blocked healing will not follow.

Reiki falls into the genre of oriental medicine and is best termed as "energy work." Traditional Japanese Reiki differs from Western Reiki much as checkers differs from chess. The board (or the patient) is the same, but the pieces and the moves are all different. Traditional Japanese Reiki has two hundred and twenty hand positions, while in America there are only seventeen. Treatments are guided by traditional Chinese pulse and tongue diagnoses as well as Byosen, an energy palpation technique. In Japan, it can take up to six years of study and practice to become certified as a Reiki Master. There are few traditional practitioners of Japanese Reiki in the U.S. Often, we utilize Reiki in our practice for Lyme patients. Patients who had been on Western treatments for years with little to no effect are getting better.

Maggie, a young student, was one of our first neurologic Lyme cases that we treated together. Maggie had a long list of problems that were secondary to Lyme. Severe insomnia, inability to hold a conversation, destructive behavior and more. Both with EAV testing and with John's assessment we found blockages along meridian pathways feeding her brain.

With Lyme, certain systems tend to come under assault a little more than others. From a Qi perspective, we find that the excretory organs can be problematic with Lyme disease. We can determine if a person is in an active stage of infection, or, for instance, if their brain or gall bladder is likely infected. While treating the infection, it's essential that the excretory organs, such as the kidneys and liver, do not have their Qi blocked. When the spirochetes die in your system, if you can't get rid of them they can produce toxins and those toxins can make you sick. However, once the energy systems in the body are unblocked, we can begin to introduce things like homeopathic medicine, botanicals and other frequency treatments to kill the infectious microorganisms and ameliorate the detoxification symptoms.

In Maggie's case, when we opened her meridian blockages, her condition began to improve. She started communicating, sleeping, and the natural antimicrobial therapies she was given began to lower her infectious load. David, a 13-year-old patient, had been suffering from tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and Bartonella. He had symptoms of depression, brain fog, fatigue, and weakness. Even though being on antibiotics for many months, he was not improving. Once again EAV assessment showed that there were significant energetic blockages. David's body was literally "starved" of Qi. In his first session, David came out of the room laughing and giggling. After several more sessions David declared, "I'm starting to feel better!" something that he had never expressed before. It's worth noting: If you don't have your energy, you don't have your health.

Natural Ways to Promote Breast Health & Prevent Breast Cancer: Part 2

arly detection of breast cancer is certainly critical, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As noted in Part 1 of this two-part primer, an ideal approach to breast cancer prevention incorporates various healthy lifestyle choices, such as diet and weight management, daily exercise, toxin reduction, and harmful habit elimination. Nutritional supplements can also contribute by bolstering the immune system, lowering inflammation, and activating tumor-suppressor genes that trigger the normal death of defective cells.

Evidence-Based Protective Nutrients Scientific studies substantiate the potential of the dietary supplements discussed below to lower the risk of breast cancers that grow in response to the hormones estrogen and progesterone [respectively called estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+), about 70% of all breast cancers, and progesterone-receptor-positive (PR+), about 87% of all ER+ breast cancers], and those that are not hormone-dependent.

Calcium D-Glucarate: The liver produces glucuronic acid, which binds to various toxins, including harmful estrogen, and deactivates them. The body then excretes the toxic complex in the bile. Beta-glucuronidase is an enzyme that bacteria in the

colon produce, which breaks the glucuronic acid-estrogen bond and reduces estrogen elimination from the body. Excessive betaglucuronidase activity is thus associated with an increased risk for estrogen-dependent breast cancer. While foods containing Dglucaric acid (organic apples, lettuce, cruciferous vegetables) help lower beta-glucuronidase activity, preliminary research has shown that calcium d-glucarate is just as effective as natural d-glucaric acid, and presents no known side effects or drug interactions.

DIM (diindolylmethane): Glucobrassicin in cruciferous vegetables is the precursor to Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which in turn is the precursor to DIM. While researchers maintain that more human research addressing its mechanisms and dosing is warranted, studies indicate that DIM (especially highly bio-available BR-DIM®) protects the body against xenoestrogens, harmful compounds discussed in Part 1, and estrogen-dependent breast cancer. DIM has been proven to exhibit direct anti-cancer effects by promoting DNA repair, accelerating cancer cell death, stimulating the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, and depriving cancer cells of their blood supply.

Ground Flaxseeds/Flaxseed Oil With Lignans: Abundant animal studies have demonstrated that multiple flaxseed components are breast cancer protective: (1) alpha-linolenic acid: low levels of this omega-3 fatty acid have been found in breast cancer patients, and to be associated with the spread of breast cancer into lymph nodes; (2) lignans: compounds that provide many plants their stiff structure that are most abundant in flaxseeds than in any other edible plant; antioxidants that are weak phytoestrogens which decrease estrogen production, block environmental estrogens from binding to estrogen receptors (like the cancer drug Tamoxifen), and promote production of protective estrogen; (3) soluble and insoluble fiber: a high-fiber diet reduces risk for breast cancer by up to 54%, and 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds contain approximately 6 grams of fiber.

Medicinal Mushrooms: Extensive research has established that many cancer-fighting chemicals give multiple medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi, maitake, and shiitake, the power to protect against breast cancer through various mechanisms. The so-called D-fraction extract from the maitake mushroom, a proven tumor cell killer, is one source of a complex sugar (polysaccharide) called “beta-glucans” that

activates the immune system’s macrophages, T cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. (Maitake also counteracts the immune weakening impact of chemotherapy.)

Reishi mushrooms stimulate various immune cells, prevent growth of new blood vessels to tumors, and suppress the spread of cancer to surrounding tissues. While eating medicinal mushrooms provides benefits, their extracts in the form of dietary supplements are far more potent agents for breast cancer prevention.

Melatonin: The pineal gland in the brain produces this serotonin-derived hormone and powerful antioxidant that induces sleep and regulates sleep patterns.

This supplement protects against breast cancer by: (1) slowing estrogen’s production, preventing its overproduction, and blocking its stimulatory effect on breast cells; (3) opposing cell division; (4) blocking blood vessels from supplying blood to tumors; and (5) enhancing the tumor-fighting power of vitamin D. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil): Although researchers have generally determined that the predominant driving force in breast cancer is hormonal, other factors such as inflammation have also been recognized as having an important role.

Researchers in a 2018 Canadian animal study concluded that marine-sourced, omega-3 fatty acids are roughly eight times more effective than those from plants in preventing breast tumors and halting their growth. These fats block all inflammatory pathways, cause cancer cell death, slow cell division in response to estrogen, stop the flow of new blood vessels to tumors, decrease breast density, and reduce risk of metastasis. Fish oil supplements should be molecularly distilled or pharmaceutical grade, cholesterol- and contaminant-free, enteric coated (to promote maximum absorption and proper digestion), and taken in divided doses with a meal.

Polyphenols (Grape Seed Extract(GSE)/ Resveratrol/Green Tea): These natural compounds, found abundantly in a wide variety of foods, combat inflammation, cell oxidation, and tumor cell growth.

Scientists recognize that polyphenol research is a promising field specifically in the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Since GSE inhibits aromatase, the enzyme that converts androgen to estrogen, it is considered important in the prevention of ER+ breast cancer. Both lab and human studies have proven that resveratrol (the polyphenol in red wine and Japanese

Specifically, when breast cancer cells have working progesterone receptors, and sufficient progesterone is available, progesterone will slow down estrogen-fueled growth and division of cancer cells. Lee, M.D., stated that natural, bioidentical progesterone cream supplementation can slow and stop breast cancer by reestablishing the levels of bioavailable progesterone that your body would normally make and oppose the undesirable, cancer-causing effects of estrogen. Select a standardized natural product that contains a total of 900-1,000mg of progesterone in two ounces, or approximately 20 mg in ¼ teaspoon.

Vitamin D3: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased breast cancer risk. A recent review of the scientific literature has concluded that better designed and randomized clinical trials are needed to address the association of vitamin D level with breast cancer risk, development, recurrence, and survival at different disease stages. Yet, it is well-established that this steroid turns genes “on” and “off” and protects against breast cancer by: (1) making breast cells more resistant to toxins; (2) decreasing the ability of breast cells to divide; (3) causing the death of tumor cells; (4) inhibiting blood flow to tumors to prevent their development; (5) boosting immunity, especially by activating NK cells; (6) reducing inflammation; and (7) lowering estrogen production.

While many factors impact whether a woman will develop breast cancer, living a healthy lifestyle and taking protective dietary supplements are potent measures that can reduce risk and increase peace of mind.

Eileen Fisher’s Women Together: Life-Changing Experiences

ileen Fisher, the clothing designer, is sharing something meaningful for the good of all women; a space for them to connect with each other either online or at the Eileen Fisher Learning Lab in Irvington, New York. She calls it Women Together. Women Together is designed to help women listen, share and connect with one another so that they can ignite true change in themselves and each other. It is born out of the belief that our revolution begins within and that a collective power emerges when women bond with other women.

Each event in the Women Together Series features three elements: Connect, Practice and Move. Whether you join in person or online, you will have opportunities to connect with other participants, learn and try new practices that support the day’s experience and spend time moving.

The events always include inspiring speakers and Dr. Christiane Northrup, Latham Thomas, Gabby Bernstein, and Kate Johnson are all scheduled for later this spring.

“As women, it’s an important time for us to show up,” says Fisher, founder and CEO of EILEEN FISHER, Inc. “The world needs us.”
