ave you noticed that time seems to be flying by? I can’t believe it’s March already! Some people say that as you get older time goes by faster because we have more responsibilities, families to take care of, jobs and careers and less free time overall. I’ve been thinking about this because I just celebrated my 50th birthday last month. Yup – you heard right – 50 years old. Over the last few months leading up to it, I’ve been saying to myself – “how in the world have you been alive for 50 years?” It seems impossible. I remember my parents being 50 – where did the time go? But more importantly, I’ve been reflecting on what I’ve accomplished over the last 50 years. And even more important than that – what lies ahead!

It used to be that 50 marked this huge milestone (and of course it is) – but the outlook from there was pretty bleak. Most people believed that life was more than half over and it was a downhill road of aging, health issues and ultimately death. Walk into any party store and all of the “50” decorations and party swag are black with references to being over the hill and OLD! I even saw stuff with the grim reaper on it! But as I sit here today, I believe that we’ve come a long way from those beliefs. Isn’t everyone saying that 50 is the new 30?? I can say for sure that at 50 my outlook is fantastic – I truly believe that life is only going to get better. I’m in the best physical shape of my life, my business is still growing, I know I have much bigger and better things to accomplish – and I’m way more confident and comfortable in my skin which is an amazing place to be.

The funny thing is though, that I’m not sure I would have said I expected to feel this way if you asked me when I was 30. If I had any idea that I would be looking and feeling the way that I do at 50 – I might have done a lot of things differently in my life.

The point here…age is just a number!

I know it’s a cliché – but now I understand what it means. We are living in an amazing time where we have the best information about how to take care of our body and soul at our fingertips every day. We have opportunities galore to start a new business, a new job, travel and learn. At 50 – we still have 20+ good years to do whatever our heart desires. I know people who are going back to school and starting a whole new career. I mean seriously you’re still young enough to become an entrepreneur and have the energy to put in the hours. You’re old enough to have wisdom but young enough that your parents may still be alive. If you’re tired, you can ask the young guy to give up his seat on the subway for you…or you can date him!

So JUST DO IT! Stop worrying about your age, your finances, what people will think. Even if you do live to be 100 – I can guarantee you’ll look back and think…life is short. Have no regrets.

THE BUZZ Depression: A Disease or a Symptom?

I

diagnosed patients and handed out medication referrals to thousands of men and women over a ten-year time span. Then, I woke up. Actually, I was awakened by a doctor who had already converted from conventional medicine to holistic psychiatry.

She sat me down one day and started explaining a new truth.

She asked me to open my mind and heart to the fact that maybe we're disabling our patients’ own healing mechanisms when we put them on psychiatric medications, not to mention opening them up to a world of addiction. She was adamant that everyday toxins in our homes make us really sick. She said that we don't warn people how hard anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds are to get off of.

She believed depression wasn't a disease, it was a symptom.

Oftentimes, after an awakening, we are called into service. I felt the constant need to go back into teaching, to spread the word that we, both practicioners and patients, could do this better. The over-medication of our society is one of the biggest human travesties of our time, so I put myself into the line of fire. I became, of all things, a "liberal" commentator on Fox. Yes, they have them. I wrote a book. And I started a media and production company called Point Zero. Last year we began our first project, a podcast called Unscripted. Now listened to in over twenty countries by hundreds of thousands of people, I'm proud to say that one episode at a time we're changing lives. The proof is in the plethora of emails I get each week letting me know how much the work we're doing has helped them heal; their bodies, their souls, their hearts, their relationships to loved ones and their communities.

elaneia Dubay began making cranberry liqueur for holiday gifts starting in 2008, then in 2011 beset by gluten and chemical sensitivities, she created the liqueurs in her kitchen for her own enjoyment.

couple did not want to continue this trend and by handcrafting every batch of each flavor, the company is proud to say Wild Moon and future product lines will be made without GMOs and will always be chemical free.

Fast forward to 2013 to a neighborhood party in Hartford’s West End, to which Lelaneia brought two bottles of liqueurs as hostess gifts. There happened to be a few local restaurant owners and mixologists present. They unknowingly tasted the liqueurs and were blown away.

They called it ‘magic in a bottle,’ and said there was nothing else like it on the market.

In the early development phase, Lelaneia, to her great surprise, could not find a base spirit that was guaranteed non-GMO in the United States. Opening up the search, she found a sugar cane base spirit produced in The Netherlands.

By using sugar cane, the natural sweetness enhances the liqueurs and is more environmentally friendly than wheat, which is a popular ingredient in spirits production.

At first Lelaneia was hesitant, as she ran her own landscape design firm with a background in art and botany. But knowing more and more people affected by the chemicals in food, she began to research the alcohol industry. Now determined to provide an alternative in spirits, Lelaneia ran through hundreds of test batches before deciding on the original flavors available today: Cucumber, Rose, Lime, Cranberry, Lavender, Chai Spice and Birch. “I really went for flavors you couldn't find on shelves, I wanted to reduce unnecessary sugars and pull flavor forward.” Her husband, Tom, was “all in” for using his experience in the corporate world, and together, they moved forward to develop artisanal, botanically-infused liqueur and Wild Moon Liqueurs was born.

For decades, people have become more selective when it comes to food and diet, yet stop this practice when it comes to their alcohol choices. ‘Clean drinking’ supports the thought if you are going to eat clean, why not drink clean too?

Hartford Flavor is up for the challenge of resetting industry standards by educating consumers. Part of their mission is to be a sustainable, ethical spirits producer that includes being environmentally minded.

This practice involves repurposing, reusing and recycling as much as possible. The company grows some of its raw flavoring materials, sources from local farms, recycles and composts, and supports the efforts within the ‘green’ industry. Lelaneia believes everything is connected in some manner and therefore encourages everyone she meets to ‘drink clean’.

In 2014, Tom and Lelaneia started Hartford Flavor Company and launched the product line. Wild Moon Liqueurs, has been called by some industry veterans, “the only liqueur that contains non-gmo and organic raw materials, for a gluten-free, chemical free product.”

Wild Moon is now found at retailers and restaurants across CT, MA, RI and FL and will launch into several other states in the coming months. Hartford Flavor’s tasting room, is open to the public for tours on Fridays 4-7pm, Saturday 1-6pm, and Sunday 2-5pm. The tasting room can also be hired out for private tastings and events.

To bring any alcoholic product to the market, producers go through the federal Tax and Trade Bureau, which regulates alcohol. By going through the system, Lelaneia noticed that the bureau does not require companies to list their ingredients on packaging like the food industry does.

Because of this, it is the norm for alcohol brands to use preservatives, stabilizers, GMOs, artificial flavor and coloring without informing their consumers. The

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Fix Your Diet to Help Lower Cholesterol

A

ccording to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), about 32% of adults in the United States have high cholesterol. This is defined as having elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL), levels at or above 130 mg/ dl. Lowering LDL is the primary goal of conventional cholesterol treatment. Raising the levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which are protective, and lowering blood fats called triglycerides are also targets for cholesterol medications. Dietary intervention for high cholesterol in the past was primarily to lower fats, such as those found in eggs, meat, and high fat dairy products. This approach worked for some, but not all people. The emphasis has shifted, especially among holistic practitioners, to emphasize ingesting minimally processed foods, while reducing or eliminating processed foods. Foods as close as possible to their natural state are considered to be less processed.

Foods that are processed tend to be packaged, have more ingredients, and they don’t resemble the foods that they came from.

An eating plan to lower LDL and triglycerides and raise HDL eliminates refined “white” flours, processed sugar, and unhealthy fats such as those found in fast food and packaged snacks. Grain and flour products (even whole grains) are limited because of the effect on blood sugar and insulin levels, which increase inflammation and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. At least a serving or more per day of legumes (beans, peas, lentils), which are sources of soluble fiber and protein, are included. The soluble fiber found in legumes and other foods have the benefit of lowering LDL. It is recommended to increase non-starchy vegetable intake to six or more cups per day. These include all vegetables except potato, sweet potato, yam, taro, yucca, winter squash, and carrots. Starchy vegetables are fine to include but in smaller quantities because they contain more carbohydrates and have a greater effect on blood sugar. The eating plan also includes raw nuts and seeds and minimally processed oils and fats such as extra virgin olive oil and avocado.

Many holistic practitioners agree that eggs from naturally raised chickens and grass-fed beef can be used. Both eggs and beef were primary targets of past cholesterol-lowering dietary campaigns.

Naturally raised meats and farm eggs tend to have more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than animals raised in large scale operations know as factory farms. This is thought to be because of unnatural living conditions and diets consisting of pesticide laden-GMO corn and soy. Fish are considered one of the healthiest animal-based protein sources, but you have to be careful about choosing fish that are lower in toxins such as heavy metals and pesticides. Choose sustainably caught, wild-caught, or local fish, rather than farmraised to get the health benefits of essential fatty acids.

What is Autoimmune Disease?

T

his type of disorder includes arthritis, allergies, celiac disease, MS, psoriasis, and many other problems that people are dealing with in our country. It occurs when your body starts to attack itself from an out of control immune system which was fighting an infection, a food, an allergen, or a toxin thus creating inflammation throughout the body. This can be directed at your joints, your digestive system, your skin, your endocrine system or something systemic.

The problem is that most regular tests can’t find the cause of this inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medicine is prescribed which just covers up the problem and can cause other problems like intestinal bleeding, leaky gut, yeast overgrowth and more infection.

My Blood Labs are Normal but I’m Still Losing My Hair!

The Only Thing Constant is Change

eraclitus was a Greek philosopher (circa 500 BCE) who was known for his quote “the only thing constant is change”. He believed that life is always in flux. He was absolutely right.

When we want to change, we begin to ask ourselves questions to determine what we want to change (some of us make lists). Should I make a career change? Do I want to lose weight? Do I want to exercise (or exercise more)? Do I want to eat healthier?

Here are a few things to remember as we embark on changing: 1. When you decide to make a change in your life, reflect on why you want this change. What are the benefits? Will this make you happy (or happier)? How can you achieve this? Are you ready?

2. When you decide what change (or changes) you want to make, then it’s time to start creating goals.

3. Create goals and commit to them. When you have committed to your goals, each action will move you toward a new behavior.

4. Measure your progress using a journal. You can review where you began and where you are now.

Here a few things to remember as you are changing: 1. Be kind to yourself. It takes time to change. It takes anywhere from 21 to 30 days to begin to change your behavior.

2. If at first you don’t succeed, keep going. Achieving your goals takes perseverance.

Following these steps will ultimately create behavior change.

Before we delve too far into our discussion about sugar, perhaps we should first define what sugar is and its implication in the diet.

There are three macronutrients required to sustain life: fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Sugar is a carbohydrate. The term sugar typically invokes the image of white refined table sugar (made from sugar beets and sugarcane), which contains empty calories. However, sugar is also found in the forms of glucose, galactose, lactose, fructose, sucrose and maltose.

Devoid of nutrients, sugar can actually deplete the body of nutrients which are needed for sugar metabolism. The main nutrients depleted by sugar include B vitamins, chromium, and magnesium. B vitamins are important for enzymatic reactions in the body and low levels can cause tiredness, numbness and tingling. Chromium is important for insulin regulation, and magnesium supports many enzymes in the body. Some food for thought; one molecule of sugar depletes 54 molecules of magnesium.

related? The cell membrane is coated in a glycocalyx. The glycocalyx helps control the endothelial cells in blood vessels. When the endothelial cells are disrupted due to increased sugar consumption, sugar molecules will covalently attach to protein or lipid molecules in blood vessels. This will compromise the glycocalyx, causing a fluid imbalance. This imbalance results in edema and plaque formation - a cardiovascular risk.

What does that mean for us? Blood sugar is increased in the blood vessels causing increased glycation of endothelial cells, increased inflammation, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes among other health concerns. The intake of refined sugar causes the initial spike in blood sugar, so the pancreas releases insulin. This can cause low blood sugar, which influences another reaction where the adrenal gland will release cortisol to increase low blood sugar and bring it back into balance. The cycle of insulin release and then cortisol released by the adrenal glands can cause chronic fatigue syndrome, adrenal fatigue, and menopause.

What causes you to crave sugar?

In the short term, increased consumption of sugar can increase L-tryptophan which is converted into serotonin. This

If an imbalance in the flora occurs where good bacteria are lacking, candida can overgrow. “Good” bacteria keep “bad” bacteria in check, preventing it from overgrowing, but when this system is upset, candida can flourish. The balance can be upset by the overuse of antibiotics (they destroy all bacteria, not just the “bad” guys) and by overconsumption of sugar. Without “good” bacteria to keep “bad” bacteria in check the “bad” guys can take over.

Does that mean all sugar is bad?

Not always. Natural sugars, like those found in fruits and vegetables, are good for you because they contain vital nutrients.

One should try to avoid all refined and concentrated sugars, such as white table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup, processed honey and brown sugar. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (Nutrasweet) and saccharin should also be avoided. Stevia is a good alternative natural sweetener which doesn’t contain calories. It has been shown to help regulate pancreatic function in diabetics to decrease blood sugar, as well as exhibit antimicrobial qualities.

What types of conditions do you correlate with increased sugar consumption?

Top Ten Ways to Start a Yoga Program

By Justine Fuller s the owner/director of Fuller Yoga and instructor for 20 years I’ve seen a lot. But more importantly I’ve heard a lot; of excuses that is. I’ve heard everything from “yoga is too hard” to, “it’s boring”, to, “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga”. Starting something new over the age of 29 is not easy, I get it, but in this case the benefits, from increased flexibility to decreased stress levels, will far outweigh the challenges of being a beginner. I tell my students to take at least 3 yoga classes a week to really feel the benefits and make progress. So I’ve devised a list of helpful hints for those just starting out. Make a copy and put it in your yoga mat bag to remind you to keep going.

Be willing to try different things.

Take 30 days and go to a few yoga studios, try an online class or take a private lesson. In essence you are shopping around for what fits your personality, your lifestyle and your energy level.

There is nothing worse than “having to go to the gym.” So don’t give your yoga mat the same fate.

2.

Find a friend to go with you.

It’s hard to go it alone. Find someone who is willing to do different things with you for a month. At the end of 30 days you may find you both go your own way but don’t commit to anything until you’ve both tried everything.

Having a friend keeps you accountable when you just don’t feel like going.

Shop for new yoga attire.

Nothing says fun like a reason to go shopping. It’s always better to work out or do some downward facing dogs knowing you look your best. Find workout clothes that you feel good in and you like to wear. However, don’t buy too many as you’re likely to have to buy it all over again once you start re-shaping your body.

4.

Keep a journal. After every class, DVD or private session rate what it was like.

Did you like the workout but not the teacher? Did you like the place but not the people? Create a list and score each place or yoga practice after each visit. Start to identify what on your list is the most important to you and match up the places/classes that have the highest scores.

5.

There are no quick fixes. Taking care of your body and your health is a choice.

We all know that we can’t floss once and keep our teeth at their best. The same goes with yoga. It needs to be a lifestyle choice. Something we can easily fit into our schedule that is an enjoyable part of our day. Something we can look forward to. Think of it like lunch or recess when you were a kid.

6.

Feel your way into shape. Even if it’s not here yet feel what is like to fit in those new clothes, feel what it is like when the opposite sex notices you, feel how great it is when you have to tighten your belt, feel how you are going to receive the compliments that come, feel how rewarding it is when your hard work pays off. Don’t let yourself feel anything else but the end result.

7.

Be ready for change. You cannot start a yoga program and expect everything in your life to stay status quo. You are changing. Your schedule is changing, your energy levels are changing, your muscles are changing, and all of that takes work and effort so expect to feel sore, expect to have other people vie for your time, expect some challenges and remember change leads to change.

8.

Make it a priority. Whatever we give our attention to will expand. If you let your co-workers convince you it’s better to go out for happy hour than going to a yoga class remember you are on a path to change. When you give your attention to something new and make it a priority everything else will expand in that direction. There are happy hours every night of the week but your favorite class or yoga teacher may not be.

9.

After 30 days give yourself a day to go back. Go back to your old schedule, old eating habits, old friends, old clothes and notice the difference in how you feel from the old days to your new days.

Remember this is only to notice how you feel, not what you are thinking.

Which one feels better? Your body will always let you know what feels right.

Mindful Money Management: 3 Strategies for Financial Success

ow do you feel when you think about your financial situation? If you experience anxiety, uncertainty, or other unpleasant symptoms, you are not alone. Finances are a significant concern for many people. A 2017 study by Guardian Life Insurance Company of America entitled “Mind, Body, and Wallet,” found that money is cited as the #1 source of stress for a majority of American workers. The same survey showed that worry about personal finances is the leading cause of emotional stress and contributes to lower physical wellness.

But managing your money does not have to be an upsetting experience that negatively impacts you. Applying mindfulness techniques to your finances can help you cultivate a deeper awareness of your total financial picture, enabling you to approach your financial decisions with greater conviction and calculated risk.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is an intentional focus on the present moment. It has evolved over time to become a secular, psychological practice of developing and sustaining attention to thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and environmental stimuli that impact our experience of “now”.

Non-judgmental awareness of each moment is cultivated through mindfulness. Practitioners challenge themselves to attain a heightened sensitivity to the present through a variety of techniques

including, but not limited to, meditation, pauses, and gentle movements. The impact of mindfulness on physical, mental, and social well-being is documented widely through scientific and academic studies.

Strategy 1: Create Space Mindfulness promotes a consistent, ongoing process of using our senses to become more attuned to what is going on inside our bodies and outside us in our surrounding environment. This disciplined activity of “creating space” on a regular basis enables practitioners to experience feelings of groundedness and centeredness in the midst of racing thoughts and life’s busyness.

Try incorporating this strategy of “creating space” to your approach to your finances. Do you think about your finances beyond just paying the next bill that’s due? Do you know what you save and spend and check your statements? Do you review your insurance policies and ensure they continue to make sense for your needs?

Consider dedicating time – it can be as brief as a few minutes, or as long as 30 minutes, as long as it’s recurring – to pay your bills and consider questions like this as part of understanding your total financial picture. Formally reserve this time in your calendar and don’t cancel the appointment.

In the same way you go to the gym on a regular basis to take care of your physical health or ensure that you get a certain number of hours of sleep for your mental health, “create space” in your lifestyle to take care of your financial health.

Strategy 2: Plan with a Purpose Mindfulness emphasizes awareness and non-judgment. Through mindfulness, we discover that our thoughts are narratives that we create as a result of our own unique perceptions and life experiences. Repeated practice of mindfulness empowers us to let go of the constant chatter – especially the negative thoughts – that monopolize our focus, and just be.

Adopt this same open, curious awareness to your financial situation. Without worrying about how you’ll do it, ask yourself “What do I want to do with my money?”

Reflect on this question repeatedly during the spaces that you have created in your schedule, and observe what bubbles up for you. If the same priorities emerge each time you reflect on this question, these could be the goals that form the foundation of your unique financial plan.

Detox Your Landscape

veryone seems to have a detox plan. The best ones I’ve seen come with a balance of avoiding the “bad” and increasing the “good”. For example: reducing sugar and increasing veggies; cutting back on carbs and leaning into proteins; less time on screens and more experiences with people; nurturing good vibes and avoiding toxic relationships; more sleep, less caffeine. You get the picture.

As the days get longer and the horizon gets brighter, you may intend to apply similar principles towards your landscape. “Detox” is not necessarily about dealing with heavy metals or toxic chemicals. Rather, it’s a trend towards landscape wellness. Given a baseline understanding of the basic composition of healthy soil – a vibrant ecosystem of 25% air, 25% water, 45% mineral soil, and 5% organic matter, teaming with macro- and micro-organisms – here are five landscape detox tactics to try on your own stomping grounds.

1. Get on a path. No, really, it’s not just a metaphor. Pathways are important for landscapes. They visually shape the experience and the space. They also provide the practical advantage of keeping footprints – and weight, which leads to compaction – off of the workable soil. While pathways get compacted, the growing soil in gardens, veggie beds, and lawns can maintain its fluffy, porous qualities that enable the transfer of water, air, nutrients, roots, and beneficial organisms. Paths can be made out of a variety of materials. We often recommend mulch, which brings us to our second tip.

2. Lay down a magical layer of mulch. Mulch is a garden’s unsung hero. Indeed, we often refer to March as “Mulch Madness” because a layer of mulch spread down now will save so much time and energy in the future. The biggest benefits of mulch

• Cedar Mulch: Typically a warm brown color with a pleasant cedar smell. Cedar mulch is great for repelling insects and has a very slow decay process so it won’t break down quickly. Cedar mulch is also the most resistant to artillery fungus.

• Bark Mulches: Typically a variety of mulches that comes in an earthy hue or with natural colorants (brown, black and red) to make the color last. It breaks down quickly and adds nutrients to the soil.

• Pine Bark Mulch: Typically a naturally rich, dark color with a pleasant pine scent. It’s a slow decomposer.

• Hemlock Mulch: Typically strong reddish and orange tones which add rich color to landscapes. Just like cedar and pine mulch, hemlock mulches decompose slowly.

3. Amend your soil with compost. Compost is the champion detox friend for your earth system that helps support the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. You don’t want to plant directly in it; you want to mix it in strategically. Here are a few tips to help you do so: • For gardens and new lawns: add a 2-4” layer of compost and mix it into the top 6” layer of soil.

• For existing lawns: add a ¼”-1/2” layer as a topdressing. If your lawn looks all brown and earthy after the application, relax…the compost will settle down into the soil and help nourish those roots throughout the rest of the season.

• For trees and shrubs: dig a hole 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball. Mix 1 part compost with 2 parts mineral soil (mineral soil is the soil from digging the hole). Add the soil mix back in under and around the root ball, which should be at the same height as the existing landscape.

4. Tidy up your space. This is more of an emotional detox. Look with fresh eyes at your landscape: the stray trowel, the dead vines, the tipped over bucket that flew into a corner during a winter storm, and the broken sprinkler that’s been sitting in your garage or shed for two seasons. Pick them up. Put them where they belong. Clean up. Organize. Make your space work for you.

5. Shelve the chemicals. Try alternatives. Springtime is a fantastic time of year to get a head start on the garden since all plants – including weeds – are still small. Three physical (as opposed to chemical) projects that help reduce weeds, stimulate growth, and promote landscape wellness include the following: • Give your trees a “tree pedicure!” Depending on the size of your trees: A) clip off any shoots or suckers that are coming up at the base of the trunk, then B) remove any weeds or growth in the area around the base of the tree to the drip line, or wherever looks best to you, and C) cover that space with a 2” layer of mulch being careful to give the trunk room to breathe (e.g. do not create a volcano of mulch around your trunk).

• Go on a dandelion hunt. If you subscribe to the notion that you want a green lawn without dandelions, then get out your favorite weed puller, a bucket, and some neighborhood kids. Make it a challenge: who can dig down and pop up the most of those long and thick roots.

• Consider cover crops. Cover crops are quick-growing crops which are planted primarily to keep the soil covered for a short period of time, then plowed under as “green manure” or composted. Get advice from your local garden center on the best cover crop for you.

We’ll explore other natural gardening techniques including companion planting and natural pest deterrents in future Natural Nutmeg articles. The garden is a forgiving place where things – and ideas – naturally grow, die, decay, and grow again.

Try things out. Have successes. Have failures. Try again the next season. Go easy on yourself as you grow and trend towards a natural landscape.

Your Seasonal Detox How-To

easonal detox programs have become a new fad as part of our health and wellness culture. Weight loss is often a motivator to try a detox and often consumers find that detoxification plans not only help to shed some excess weight, but can also clear symptoms related to inflammation. While it may seem like a new fad, detoxification is a powerful approach many naturopathic doctors use to address health concerns related to tissue inflammation, organ congestion, and total toxic body burden.

Detoxification involves clearing toxins, (metabolic wastes) from our tissues by methods of neutralizing, transforming, and eliminating them through organs of elimination also known as the emunctories. These emunctory organs of elimination include the liver, gallbladder, lymphatics, colon, bladder, kidneys, skin, and lungs, which work continually to remove these metabolic wastes from our body.

Why Do We Detox?

Over time our bodies can accumulate metabolic wastes if they are not eliminated properly. Inflammatory diets, toxic exposures and stress are some of the culprits that increase the toxic burden on the body. Organ systems can begin to give us a signal they need support. Some of these signals can be seen in blood workups showing elevated markers of inflammation or hormonal imbalances.

Symptoms that could indicate the need for a detox include skin ailments like acne and eczema to digestive ailments like constipation

and bloating to neurological symptoms including migraines. Each individual person may have their own Achilles heel when it comes to what symptoms they present when a detox may be necessary.

Narrowing down what your metabolic wastes are is a helpful way to prevent burdening your body to begin with.

What is a Toxin?

A toxin is any substance that creates an irritating and/or harmful effect in the body. Chemicals, pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, mold, and pathogenic microorganisms are considered environmental toxins. However, our body also produces metabolic intermediates or end-products that are just as deleterious to our health as those environmentally acquired.

Signs of toxin overload include weight gain, asthma, allergies, food and environmental sensitivities, anxiety/depression, immune conditions, cancer, constipation, bad breath, fibrocystic breasts and fibroids, menstrual problems, thyroid issues, headaches, skin rashes, etc. Everyone is at risk for toxic accumulation; as a result, everyone could benefit from a detox program annually.

While our bodies' detox pathways involve multiple organ systems, the central organ that processes all our hormones, toxins, food, herbs, supplements, drugs, and alcohol is the liver. Therefore, detoxification programs can sometimes be referred to as a liver detox. It is important to note that no method of detoxification should be performed without the supervision of a medical professional. A naturopathic doctor is trained to prepare the body for detoxification and find the best program and diet plan to ensure safe and gentle cleansing any time of year. You must take into account medications, supplements, and the lifestyle of a person before recommending a detox, it is not a one size fits all approach.

How Do We Detoxify?

Our liver is a magical organ as it is regenerative, meaning it can heal itself after damage. It is known to process and metabolize all chemicals that circulate throughout the body, making this organ the primary focus of any detox plan. From every hormone, food, drug, herb, and in Chinese medical theory- our emotions, the liver is subject to being burdened in its ability to function and this can impose serious side effects and changes to our metabolism. As a result, gentle detoxification is one way we can support our livers and promote clearing of toxic waste.

Detox programs are designed to support the two phases of liver detoxification, called phase I and phase II, respectively. The first phase of liver detoxification corresponds to fatty liver mobilization.

The right lobe of the liver is highly saturated with fatty material and that is to help detox chemicals and toxins that enter the liver which are fat-soluble. These include environmental contaminants/pollutants, plastics, insecticides/pesticides, plant or drug compounds,

hormones, microorganisms, and food additives/preservatives. The goal of Phase 1 reactions is to hydrolyze and polarize the fatty molecules (meaning make them more water-soluble) in order to transition them into Phase 2 detox reactions.

The second phase of liver detoxification corresponds to tagging metabolic intermediates and toxins with anti-oxidants and waterbased molecules to finally help eliminate them as waste through excretory routes, including feces and urine. The goal of Phase 2 reactions is to conjugate or transform toxins into less harmful forms so they can be appropriately excreted from the body.

4 Steps for a Successful Detox: 1. Determine toxic body burden through exposure and health history.

2. Perform additional testing, under supervision by your physician, to determine your baseline.

3. Support detoxification organ systems including other organs of elimination like digestive system, skin, lungs, etc.

4. Follow an individualized detoxification plan that will help to eliminate current toxins and adjust lifestyle to reduce further exposure.

Methods for Testing Toxic Load: 1. Exposure history 2. Heavy metals in hair, blood, urine 3. Liver function testing 4. Blood chemistry workup for inflammation, diabetes, hyperlipidemia 5. Urinary workup for amino acids, organic acids, and cytokines 6. Food allergy IgG antibody testing for commonly eaten foods based on dairy, meat, fruit, vegetable, grains/legumes, nuts/seed, seafood categories.

A few important considerations before you detox: 1. A patient should receive an appropriate workup of liver function and micronutrient status prior to undergoing a detox program. It is important to supply the necessary vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants to encourage healthy liver function. Remember, if we push the liver system while it does not contain its essentials, we risk adding side effects and harm to our bodies.

2. Digestive and urinary tracts, are to be open and functional. Any blockage or insufficiency in waste removal will add an obstacle in detoxification; thus, cause our bodies to reabsorb waste and bring on unwanted side effects.

3. Staying well hydrated is the key to any diet-detox plan. All chemical reactions in the liver and other organ detoxification are highly dependent on water.

4. Be positive! Adopt a positive mindset when undergoing a detox program. Find support through family, friends, or health community. Try detoxing with a friend or partner, journaling your progress, moving your body, and attending community lectures to inspire change. And always refer to your naturopathic doctor for guided support. 5 Steps to Heal Your Gut

H

ave you heard of this thing called “leaky gut”? What does it mean to have a leaky gut and what symptoms would you experience? More importantly, what can you do about it? Read further and you will have a better understanding of the primary importance of maintaining the integrity of your gut as one of the major first lines of defense for your body. You will also learn about what conditions may be associated with a breach in this protective gut barrier, and what power you have to restore this fundamental protection.

Our bodies are so beautifully and intricately designed to support our health and well-being. There is a very deliberate compartmentalization within our bodies to provide protection and division of labor. In this article, we will focus on the lining of the small intestine with our discussion of leaky gut. Know that any organ with a barrier function can be considered “leaky” (for example, leaky mouth, leaky brain, etc.).

The Digestive System The digestive system is comprised of many parts: our mind, mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and large intestine (colon). The small intestine is where 90% of digestion and absorption of food occurs. The lining of the small bowel is a single cell layer thick and serves additionally as a strong barrier to toxins, pathogens (bacteria, yeast, parasites, viruses), as well as large undigested food particles. This cell layer is held together very securely with intercellular tight junctions which prevent anything from passing through other than thoroughly digested food and nutrients. Leaky gut (or increased intestinal permeability) occurs when the tight junctions between cells are compromised.

Effects of Leaky Gut Toxins, bugs, and undigested food particles, which normally are eliminated from the body, instead come into the body. This is not a good thing and ultimately contributes to the development of autoimmune conditions, as well as a whole host of other issues.

With the disruption of this barrier, there can be a reduction of the protective mucosal layer of secretory IgA (the primary sentinel guard of the digestive tract and lungs) further diminishing the immune defense of the gut barrier. Moreover, the digestive and absorptive capacity of the small intestine can be weakened, leading to nutrient deficiencies which can affect every part of the body, and every function of the body.

Our immune system is very well-trained to recognize things that belong to our bodies (self) and those things that don’t (nonself). As such, it will mount a defensive antibody reaction against the uninvited guests which have inappropriately crossed the gut barrier. This leads to inflammation which can affect the whole body. And over time, a continued immune response can turn into an autoimmune response against the body’s own tissues. So, leaky gut is a step in the development of autoimmune conditions.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut Leaky gut can cause all kinds of symptoms throughout your body: • Bloating, diarrhea, constipation, “irritable bowel syndrome” • Food and chemical sensitivities • Asthma • Autoimmune conditions such as: Celiac disease, Type 1 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), Rheumatoid arthritis, Multiple sclerosis, Ankylosing spondylitis • Joint pain, fibromyalgia • Fatigue • Depression, anxiety, and cognitive issues such as ADHD, brain fog • Female and male hormonal issues • Skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, eczema, and psoriasis • Weight gain If you identify many of these as issues in your body, you may have leaky gut. While testing for leaky gut is available (lactulose/ mannitol test, stool zonulin and others), ultimately what leads to the diagnosis of leaky gut is having the symptoms of many of the things listed above.

What Causes Leaky Gut? There are four primary causes of leaky gut: • Poor diet • Chronic stress • Overexposure to toxins (including medications) • Dysbiosis (low levels of good gut bacteria or overgrowth of others) 1. Poor Diet: (primary dietary offenders which can damage the lining of the gut) • Gluten (Pro-inflammatory and causes the release of zonulin which disrupts the tight junctions between small intestinal cells. Zonulin is elevated in the tissue and blood of people affected by autoimmune conditions) • Dairy (A1 beta Casein protein is pro-inflammatory and is very similar in structure to gluten) • Refined sugars (Pro-inflammatory and support the growth of yeast and bad bacteria) • Processed/packaged foods (Pro-inflammatory and foreign) • GMO foods (Cause direct damage to gut lining. Most corn and soy in the U.S. is GMO)

• Unsprouted grains (which have phytic acid and lectins which can break down the gut lining) 2. Chronic Stress: Ultimately, chronic stress is the root cause of all illness. In the setting of gut health, chronic stress with elevated cortisol levels can lead to decreased secretory IgA levels (that primary sentinel guard of the digestive tract and lungs) and decreased defense against bad bugs. Elevated cortisol levels also lead to the breakdown of the gut lining directly.

So, understand that emotional stress alone can break down the protective gut barrier!

Autoimmune Disease: A Modern Epidemic?

T

here is simply no doubt that the incidence of autoimmune disorders has been rising sharply over the past several decades in the Western industrialized countries, particularly the United States (See Figure 1). The question is why has there been such a sharp rise in the incidence of these disorders? The answers may very well be found in the current medical research, but you would probably never know it by visiting a doctor. This may be because this situation serves as an example of the giant chasm that often exists between Western medical research, which is often outstanding, and the practice of clinical medicine, which often leaves quite a bit to be desired when it comes to the management of chronic complex disorders with high morbidity (disability) but low mortality (death) rates.

The typical conventional medical approach to autoimmune disorders focuses on the management of symptoms with various antiinflammatory medications and often ultimately the use of chemotherapeutic drugs and very potent immunosuppressive agents with nasty potential side-effects like leukemia and lymphoma. While these approaches admittedly can provide substantial symptomatic relief to the patient, they do not really get to the cause of these conditions and some research suggests that these approaches may result in a furthering of the underlying disease process. However, modern research into autoimmune diseases suggest radically different approaches may be required to reverse the above cited trends, including a strong emphasis on very early detection with predictive auto-antibody testing, a focus on optimizing the gastrointestinal health/environment (i.e., the microbiome), including the eradication of infectious immune triggers with antimicrobial therapy, and even the seemingly bizarre use of helminth parasites (worms) as therapy.

Some of these concepts have a long history in naturopathic, integrative and functional models of medicine, but now are emerging as hot areas of interest in mainstream medical research journals and investigative communities in immunology.

Molecular Mimicry The concept of molecular mimicry is really a simple one, and it is an area attracting considerable research related to why autoimmune disorders occur. Simply stated, environmental exposure to specific antigens (immune system-triggering proteins in food and on microbes like viruses and gut bacteria) can, in genetically susceptible individuals, induce a cross-reaction with structurally similar proteins associated with specific body tissues. In other words, something from the outside, such as a food or bacteria, that you may be genetically susceptible to over-reacting to, may trigger an immune reaction to also occur against part of your own body.

There are now multitudes of associations that have been firmly established between immune incompatibility with specific food-

derived proteins, as well as the overgrowth of certain gastrointestinal bacteria, and the presence of specific autoimmune disorders (See Table 1 on page 32). While some of these associations have been known for quite some time, mechanisms of causality (pathways in which an associated triggering antigen can cause autoimmune activity against a specific body tissue or structure) are rapidly being established in the research. However, patients suffering from disorders like rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and autoimmune thyroiditis (i.e., Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease), multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus (SLE), etc., who visit a rheumatologist or endocrinologist do not routinely have stool analysis to assess their GI microbiota or food sensitivity testing to detect these potential triggers. This is ironic, particularly in the case of bacterial overgrowth in the gut, as the conventional medical paradigm typically assumes an infectious cause until proven otherwise. Perhaps this is just another example of resistance to significant change in clinical approach within medicine, even in the face of compelling evidence to do so, as it would then require a least a passive admission that something so seemingly simple was missed for so long.

For example, oral bacterial infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis, the primary bacterial cause of periodontal (gum) disease, may also play a role in the direct development of some cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Many other researchers have now also gone beyond establishing mere associations between the presence of various microbes and autoimmune disorders. Some have actually experimentally induced autoimmune disease in animals by introducing specific bacteria into their gut, and have then resolved it by introducing another, making a compelling argument for a causal relationship between the imbalances in the GI microbiota and autoimmune activity.

Food proteins have also been linked to autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s and Graves’ diseases of the thyroid. Celiac patients (those with a severe intolerance to gluten-containing grains) have approximately 10 times the rate of auto-immune thyroid diseases as non-celiac individuals. It may be no coincidence that the emergence of an apparent epidemic of autoimmune diseases has corresponded with the ever-increasing consumption of poorquality modern processed foods known to both negatively alter the GI microbiome and to contain a constant (often hidden) stream of offending dietary antigens, including gluten-containing grains and genetically modified proteins (GMO foods).

While all of these associations may be interesting to researchers, what does this really mean to doctors and their patients? Some critics would argue that there is a lack of interventional data to suggest that eradication of these associated organisms and/or avoidance of these dietary antigens positively affects patient outcomes. This

may be true in some instances, but it has been well established in others. Dietary elimination of gluten-containing grains is entirely accepted as the most viable intervention in Celiac disease, an autoimmune disease of the intestinal tract.

One potential issue in play is that by the time a patient is diagnosed with autoimmune disease they are very far down the disease spectrum and there is often already substantial tissue damage. The proverbial horse has already left the barn. However, what if potential triggers were routinely screened for and removed by health care providers, particularly in those with a family history of autoimmune disorders? The entire course of the disorder might be favorably altered, and many of these disorders might potentially never emerge if the correct preventive measures were taken.

In the naturopathic, integrative and functional medicine models, there is a strong emphasis on both early detection and interventions that target the underlying basis and dysfunction of a disease process. Therefore, in these models the goal is to take clinical actions to reduce the potential for the disease process to progress. This also seems to intuitively make sense even in those who already have established disease, as even though you may not be able to undo the damage already done, you can likely - if nothing else- slow down the train. This is particularly true since these interventions pose little or no risk and are also relatively inexpensive; including dietary changes, the use of probiotics, antimicrobial herbals/botanicals and volatile oils to address GI bacterial overgrowth and to support the gut lining (to reduce “leaky-gut” syndrome).

The Hygiene Hypothesis The concept of the hygiene hypothesis is also one that is quite simple, with the complexity being in the details. The thought that we have induced dysregulation into our immune systems by virtue of living in too clean of an environment, coupled with the over eradication of infection, is not new (See figure 1), but it has

gained favor with researchers who have begun to work out exactly why this may be the case. Some of these concepts were elegantly addressed by Weiss in an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine entitled Eat Dirt-The Hygiene Hypothesis and Allergic Disease.

There is no doubt that modern public health measures, such as adequate sewage systems, water treatment, the use of antibiotics, and various other aspects of modern hygiene have lessened deadly infectious outbreaks and have prevented unnecessary deaths. However, as with most things, there is a yin and yang.

Does this mean that our children who are: 1) growing up in more urban and suburban environments; 2) living in comparatively sterile homes; 3) drinking chlorinated water; 4) being bathed and scrubbed daily with anti-bacterial soap; 5) not being allowed to play in the dirt; 6) being given antibiotics every time they have a sniffle…are actually being harmed from an immunologic perspective and will carry this dysfunction with them throughout their entire lives? This is likely the case, and one of the reasons why, as parents of two young boys, my wife and I constantly try and balance the need for cleanliness with allowing them to be children and dig in the dirt, play in the stream in our backyard, and otherwise sample their living environment.

The Role of Parasites As reported by David Gutierrez in NaturalNews, researchers in a study conducted at the University of Nottingham, point out that humans and gastrointestinal parasites might have co-evolved in a way that the parasites actually help regulate the human immune system to prevent allergies. They believe that over the course of millions of years, gastrointestinal parasites, such as various worms (helminths) have evolved the ability to suppress the human immune system as a survival mechanism.

Because parasitic infestation has been so common throughout human evolutionary history, the human immune system has in turn evolved to compensate for this effect. This means that if the parasites are rapidly removed from the population (as has happened with modern hygiene, water treatment and the use of antimicrobial drugs), the immune system may then actually function too strongly, resulting in maladaptive immune responses such as asthma, allergies, and eczema. To test this concept the researchers studied over 1,500 children in rural villages in Vietnam where parasitic infestation with hookworm is still extremely common and allergies are not. Medical eradication of parasitic infection resulted in skyrocketing incidence of allergy, including dust mite sensitivity, supporting the hypothesis that parasites were favorably modulating their immune response.

With issues such as the hygiene hypothesis, and the role of parasites in immune function in mind, gastroenterologist and researcher Dr. Joel Weinstock, originally at the University of Iowa, and now Tufts University, has performed novel work with subjects with the autoimmune disorder inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD was unheard of before the 20th century. Beginning of 20th century incidence is thought to be about 1:10,000 and is now 1:250.

Similar data exists with the incidences of asthma, hay fever, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc. Weinstock conducted various studies

of IBD patients and treated them with the therapeutic parasite Trichuris suis, a pig whipworm, which was an ideal choice as it only remains viable in the human GI tract for a short time and must be continually administered. The organism, when introduced into patients with IBD, generally produced a balancing of the immune response and a lessening of symptoms and severity of disease. Pharmaceutical agents are now being developed along these lines to treat IBD. Intestinal Hyper-permeability (aka: “Leaky Gut Syndrome”) Leaky gut syndrome for much of the past twenty years seemed something that just naturopathic and functional medicine doctors talked about. Not any longer! Prestigious researchers such as Dr. Alessio Fasano at Harvard University, have been researching the role of intestinal permeability as part of the cause of autoimmune disorders and bringing this concept full-speed to the conventional medical research community through his publications in top-tier immunology and gastroenterology journals.

In a 2009 article in Scientific American he eloquently brought the topic to the lay audience with his article Surprises from Celiac Disease, where he described that his theory that leaky gut contributes to Celiac disease and autoimmunity and it was initially greeted with skepticism by his colleagues.

Fasano has proposed that in order for autoimmune disease to manifest there must be three factors present, and he equates these to a triangle, or three-legged stool, where if any are not present the disease cannot exist. These three factors include; 1) an environmental trigger (i.e., food, bacterial, or viral protein/antigen), 2) a genetic susceptibility of the individual, and 3) intestinal hyper-permeability (i.e., “leaky gut syndrome”). He goes on to opine that by far the easiest of these three factors to treat is intestinal permeability. Much of his work involves the study of a protein which alters intestinal permeability by the name of zonulin. His team has a potential drug in development to alter the effect of zonulin to treat leaky gut.

Functional medicine and naturopathic physicians, and other nutritionally-minded providers, have been addressing the issue of leaky gut for a long time with effective natural agents, including; L-glutamine, Nacetyl-glucosamine, various anti-inflammatory herbals/botanicals and bioflavonoids, zinc-carnosine, omega-3-fatty acids and more with much success.

Predictive Autoantibody Testing (A True Application Preventive Medicine?)

In a 2007 Scientific American article entitled New Predictors of Disease, Abner Louis Notkins stated, “Molecules called predictive autoantibodies appear in blood years before people show symptoms of various disorders.

Tests that detect these molecules could warn of the need to take preventive action.” Some of these tests have been used for many years simply to confirm the presence of a disease strongly suspected by a doctor once the patient has obvious signs of a particular autoimmune disease. However, the development and availability of low-cost autoantibody testing has ushered in the possibility to use these in a much more proactive screening strategy to predict the future emergence of autoimmune disorders so that preventive action can be initiated early to short-circuit the disease process.

It is hoped that this article will help the patient, and their doctor, to develop a comprehensive conceptual framework from which to view autoimmune disease and to institute a new proactive model from which to approach these challenging and everincreasing disorders. Physicians should look for autoimmune conditions with a strong

emphasis on: 1) very early detection with predictive auto-antibodies; 2) a focus on optimizing gastrointestinal immune function and the microbiome; 3) the eradication of infectious triggers with antimicrobial therapy, when appropriate; 4) the detection and elimination of food sensitivities; 5) allowing our children to gain more exposures through early contact with their environment; and 6) the promotion of an anti-inflammatory and healthy diet and lifestyle.

Beware of Belly Fat: Reduce It Naturally

ou may feel unattractive with your more-than-a-few extra pounds, but do you realize how much they are actually threatening your wellness and longevity? In this day of heightened concern about health insurance coverage and its costs, proactive efforts to prevent future medical conditions can provide greater peace of mind. Not all body fat is equal.

Determining how to reduce your belly fat, the dangerous fat that envelops your visceral organs to the detriment of your entire body, is one of the most valuable first steps you can take toward better physical, mental, and even financial health.

Abdominal Obesity Defined In the United States, according to the most recent CDC report, more than 70% of adults are overweight (including obese), more than 37% of adults are obese, and over 5% of adults are extremely/morbidly obese. Although other factors are relevant, the body mass index [BMI; calculated as weight (lbs)/height (inches)2 x 703] is the 34

accepted medical standard for classifying individuals according to their body composition: (1) Normal Weight BMI is 18.5-24.9; (2) Overweight BMI is 25-29.9; (3) Obese BMI is over 30; and (4) Extremely Obese BMI is over 40.

“Abdominal obesity” focuses primarily on where fat is stored, not merely on the number on the scale. It is examined in light of two measurements, waist circumference (WC) and waist/hip ratio. WC is determined by snugly placing a measuring tape horizontally around the abdomen, just above the upper hip bone. A man’s WC should be 40 inches or less, and a woman’s should be 35 inches or less. If a person’s WC is below the applicable number of inches, then waist circumference/hip circumference becomes important. A healthy waist/hip ratio is 1.0 or less for a man, and 0.8 or less for a woman.

Risks & Causes of Excess Abdominal Fat Belly fat, which increases body-wide inflammation, is dangerous and accelerates aging. Obesity, and particularly abdominal obesity, is strongly associated with a wide number of degenerative conditions, including cancer (women - breast, colon, gallbladder, uterine; men – prostate and colon); cardiovascular disease and related problems (high cholesterol/triglycerides, hypertension, atherosclerosis, blood clots, stroke/heart attack), insulin resistance/ diabetes, menstrual disorders and PCOS, gallstones, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and erectile dysfunction.

Abdominal fat tissue (known as adipose tissue, consisting of fat-storing cells called adipocytes) is now viewed as a complex metabolic and endocrine organ. Fat cells

normally secrete adipokines, hormone-like compounds that regulate insulin sensitivity.

The increase in abdominal fat causes alteration of adipokines that actually promotes insulin resistance and increased appetite, which in turn results in production of even more abdominal fat. Adiponectin, one type of adipokine that fat accumulation reduces, normally combats inflammation, lowers triglycerides, and blocks the development of atherosclerosis, a major complication of diabetes. Research has demonstrated a number of other causes of obesity and excessive abdominal fat, also related to decreased blood sugar control.

One proven theory maintains that excessive television watching positively correlates with decreased physical activity and weight gain.

Second, the set point weight theory maintains that each person’s fat cells establish a programmed weight that the body seeks to maintain by regulating the amount of food and calories consumed. When enlarged fat cells in an obese individual shrink, they either send messages to the brain to eat, or block appetite-suppressing compounds, explaining why dieting does not work.

A third theory relates to diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), the conversion of food to heat (versus being stored), which is markedly lower in overweight individuals, largely due to insulin insensitivity and lower amounts of brown fat. Since individuals predisposed to obesity continue to experience decreased DIT compared to non-overweight individuals, permanent support for insulin sensitivity is critical.

Brown fat produces far more heat than the more prevalent white fat, and evidence sup-

ports the theory that leaner individuals have a higher ratio of brown/white fat than do overweight individuals.

The evidence behind a fourth causal theory establishes that a low level of serotonin (the “happiness hormone”) in the brain, received as a signal of starvation, increases appetite and results in carbohydrate binge eating. Unfortunately, studies show that brain serotonin levels greatly decline during dieting.

Lifestyle Changes Most people resist change, especially when it means overhauling a long-maintained lifestyle. Some basic changes that can produce big results include: (1) finding personal, compelling reasons to commit to self-investment; (2) exploring possible diagnoses of diabetes, hypothyroidism, candidiasis/leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, and/ or depression; (3) when possible, using natural remedies in lieu of certain prescription drugs (e.g., corticosteroids/prednisone, psychotropics/antidepressants, and those for diabetes); (4) reducing stress and increasing sleep; (5) an herbal kit or a proven detoxifying drink (lemon-and-water variations; green tea), priming the body for weight loss by cleansing it of cell-crippling toxins and boosting the body’s seven elimination pathways; (6) adopting a healthy weight-loss dietary program that restricts calorie intake, includes ample high-quality, nutrient-dense foods (ideally organic, non-GMO), excludes gluten, dairy, alcohol, preservatives, processed foods and sugars, all white-flour foods, and saturated/hydrogenated/trans fats, and minimizes/eliminates simple carbohydrates, legumes, and grains; and (7) consuming a daily breakfast that follows these guidelines, and cleansing the body daily by drinking at least 64 ounces (up to 50% of body weight in ounces) of water.

Aim to lose fat, but also gain muscle, keeping in mind that muscle weighs

more, but the body burns more calories to maintain a pound of muscle than it does to maintain a pound of fat. Loss of 1-2 pounds/week, or no more than 1% of total body weight, is a safe, sustainable, long-term goal. The more muscle the body gains, the more calories it will burn daily (1 pound of muscle burns roughly 5-6 calories/day at rest). Start and keep moving on a regular basis, ideally daily, or no fewer than five days per week, for a total of 40-60 minutes/day.

Proven Belly Fat Blasters While maintaining a weight-minimizing lifestyle is most critical to reducing abdominal fat, certain dietary supplements can support or accelerate the process. The appropriateness of a particular product is highly individualized, and getting results can require some experimentation and patience. The scope and space of this article allows for only limited discussion of just a few generally safe, effective options (organized here alphabetically): 5-HTP: As a direct precursor to serotonin, this amino acid made from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia has been shown in human clinical studies of overweight women to promote satiety, which leads to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.

AMPK Activators: The enzyme AMPK is the body’s master regulator of metabolism that promotes mitochondrial production and revitalizes aging cells/inhibits aging.

Activating AMPK reduces abdominal fat and can produce the same overall health benefits as exercise, dieting, and weight loss. Researched AMPK activators include: (1) Metformin, a well-known diabetic drug; (2) Berberine (compared to Metformin in studies), a well-studied plant compound known to lower blood sugar, balance body lipids, and combat obesity; and (3) Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a traditional

mented chromium lowers body weight but increases lean body mass.

Garcinia cambogia (60% HCA): Though controversial because certain factors, including dose, extraction method, and study subject genetics, can impact particular product efficacy, some shortterm, small human studies have demonstrated this fruit’s association with shortterm weight and fat loss. HCA is thought to regulate serotonin/suppress the appetite and inhibit the enzyme (ATP citrate lyase) that the body uses to convert carbohydrates to fat.

Meal Replacers/Protein Powders: Protein is more satiating than carbohydrates and fat, and using protein-dense meal replacement powders and/or between-meal protein powders is a long-standing, proven belly fat/weight loss strategy when 2.2g of total protein per kilogram of body weight is consumed daily. A 2011 study concluded that adding 5g of well-tolerated PGX to low-calorie meals reduces food consumption and increases satiety.

Believe in Mind-Body Unity

T

he most dramatic experience I learned about came from my experience as well as medical errors due to technical mistakes. One of my patients had no side effects to radiation and the radiation therapist thought his machine was malfunctioning until he saw my name in her chart and then realized, “This is one of Siegel’s crazy patients.” When he asked her why she had no side effects she said, “I get out of the way and let it go to my tumor.”

The examples which I found to be more impressive were when people who thought they were receiving chemotherapy were not due to an error preparing the medication and people who thought they were being radiated were not due to no radioactive material being replaced after the machine was repaired. The doctors involved felt terrible. The radiation therapy doctor said to me he had not treated anyone for a month and just discovered the problem when the radiation therapy machine underwent its monthly inspection.

I told him he didn’t realize what he was telling me. He repeated how terrible he felt. I said, “You’d have to be an idiot to not know you weren’t treating anyone. So you obviously had people experiencing side effects and shrinking tumors.” His eyes bulged and he said, “Oh my God you’re right.”

So believe in the mind-body unity and words. Our body responds to our beliefs and I’d rather lie therapeutically to a patient than give them a list of side effects of a treatment and induce all of them because of what they hear from an authority figure. When I

did have to share some negative side effects I would add that they don’t happen to everyone; like everyone isn’t allergic to peanuts.

The cousin of my father in law’s nurse’s aide was told she was terminal with leukemia and it was a waste of time to receive chemotherapy which would only make her feel worse. When the aide heard this she called her cousin in North Carolina and told her to come up here because, “Doctor Siegel makes people well all the time.” She arrives and I am told about it so I admitted her to the hospital. I sat on her bed and explained leukemia was not something I could treat but that I would ask an oncologist friend to come and see her. Then I gave her a big hug and went to call the oncologist.

My oncologist friend told me he agreed with her doctor about the likely outcome but would give her treatment to make her feel there was hope. His letters to me began with, doing well, and ended with, in complete remission. She went home to drive her doctor nuts. What I heard later was that she told her cousin, “When Doctor Siegel hugged me I knew I would get well.” I also know patients who left their troubles to God and had their cancer disappear. That is called self-induced healing and not a spontaneous remission. So learn from exceptional patients about survival behavior. Ask them why they didn’t die rather than saying what doctors tend to say, “You are doing very well. Whatever you’re doing keep it up.” Then they learn nothing from their patient. Personality characteristics and survival are inseparable.

Last but not least remind patients of their potential. Our Creator has built survival mechanisms into all living things so we can heal wounds, alter our genes and overcome various diseases. Love your life and your body and amazing things can happen.
