I Have Learned Much from Footprints

I

am sure most of you are aware of the story about the man who walked with God and there were, therefore, always two sets of footprints. At a time of great difficulty the man noticed only one set of footprints and complained to God that He was not there when he needed Him most, God replied, “I was carrying you during the difficult times and that is why there was only one set of footprints.”

On a personal level I have learned much from footprints.

One of my stranger habits is to enjoy jogging through cemeteries. I like to read the wisdom of the words on some stones and also notice the egotistical craziness of some people’s last words. What would you share with the world with your last breath and what words do you want on your headstone?

Well to get back to the point. One day after a big snowstorm I was jogging through the deep snow and really struggling to make my way. I realized how much of a struggle it was to have to make your own way with no plowed path or footsteps to follow. The next day it was much easier. The snow was still soft and my footprints were easy to follow.

Five days later the snow had frozen and the rigid ice made it dangerous for me to try and fit into the old footprints. I had to create a new path or risk breaking my ankles.

What I learned from all this is that at different times in my life I must make different choices. At times it is all right to be carried, at other times following in the footsteps of others is appropriate, at others to make your own way and at times it is proper to leave the old ways and start a fresh path. Your way is found by what feels right for you and not by looking for the easy way.

You must remember that if you constantly follow in the steps of others you will lose your way and life. Remember their way can at times endanger you and be the wrong way. So find your way and let them go theirs. True natives can be your guide when they have shared the same experience but be wise in choosing your guides and do not follow those who are not true guides and teachers but dictate their way to you. Follow their way and you will be lost forever.

March weather in our Nutmeg State can be varied. Even as the weather starts to warm up, we can still feel a bite in the air. Soups are a nourishing way to bring warmth while still enjoying the transition into spring, through bountiful soup vegetables. The following easy, nourishing, delicious soup recipe is from my grandmother, Terri. Another wonderful thing about this recipe is its forgiving nature; whatever vegetables you have can go into this soup and help you create a delicious meal for you and the whole family.

The one criterion my grandmother taught me with this soup was to take your time adding ingredients. Be sure to bring the soup up to boil in between adding each ingredient. I have modified the recipe slightly with the spices and the addition of lemon zest and lemon juice for a more robust flavor.

The directions are listed clearly below. Enjoy!

• 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 Tbs olive oil • ¼ tsp sea salt • 3 carrots, chopped into bite-sized pieces • 2 parsnips, peeled and chopped into bite-sized pieces • 2 celery, chopped into bite-sized pieces • Zest of 1 lemon • 2 x 32oz cartons of chicken stock • 1 x 28oz can crushed or diced tomatoes with juice • 2 cups of water • 3 x 10oz bags of frozen vegetables (peas, corn, chopped green beans— if includes carrots, then delete additional chopped carrots from ingredients) • ½ of 10oz bag of frozen fava beans (Trader Joe’s has delicious frozen fava beans; can use canned/rinsed beans of other variety instead or in addition) • ½ of 10oz bag of frozen greens (spinach or kale works well) • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 Tbs sea salt • ½ tsp cracked pepper • 1 pinch hot pepper flakes • 1 Tbs dried parsley (can use fresh parsley instead) • ¼ tsp paprika • ¼ tsp dried dill • 1 dried bay leaf (be sure to scoop this out before serving soup) • Optional: Additional frozen vegetable variety (for example, broccoli)

Directions: 1. Caramelize onion in olive oil (turn burner to medium/low and cook onion until translucent—do not burn onion).

2. Add ¼ tsp sea salt and mix with onions.

3. Stir onions periodically.

4. Add carrots and parsnips and celery before onion is fully caramelized and continue to cook until onions are done.

5. Add lemon zest and stir.

6. Add cartons of chicken stock and can of crushed/diced tomatoes and water and stir.

7. Bring to boil.

8. Add bags of frozen vegetables, one bag at a time.

Bring soup to boil in between each added ingredient.

(This is an important step—my grandmother always taught me that this is how you achieve the richest flavors!)

9. Bring to boil.

10. Add frozen fava beans.

11. Bring to boil.

12. Add frozen greens.

13. Bring to boil.

14. Add lemon juice and spices.

15. Bring to boil.

16.Lower to simmer or low boil for 2 hours. (May need to add more water if soup has reduced too much.)

When Food Sensitivities Take Over:

The Mast Cell Connection

I

t seems that in this modern era of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), processed foods, and chemically laden products, there is an astronomical increase in food sensitivities and allergies.

Consult any natural or functional medicine practitioner and you are sure to be assessed for food sensitivities/allergies and leaky gut syndrome.

Autoimmune Disease and Leaky Gut

If you have a chronic illness such as autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc., it is likely that you deal with the consequences of leaky gut syndrome on a daily basis. Simply stated, this means that the tight junctions in the small intestine that prevent larger food particles from entering the blood stream have developed leaks. This allows larger food molecules to easily enter the blood stream. While this may sound relatively benign, in fact it is quite troublesome for the immune system.

While adept at identifying well-broken-down proteins (as amino acids), carbohydrates (as sugars), and fats (as fatty acids), the immune system does not recognize these larger molecules as the food required for energy production, and consequently tags them for destruction in much the same way your body might attack a bacterial or viral invader.

This means the next time the food is ingested, your body can mount a much faster attack. So your once-beloved food suddenly causes you symptoms that can affect digestion (constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, gas, bloating), skin (rashes or hives), brain (mood changes, poor concentration), respiratory (congestion, runny nose, sneezing, wheezing) or even metabolic control (blood glucose levels).

For most people with leaky gut syndrome there are only a handful of truly offending foods. While IgG blood tests for various food sensitivities may turn up seemingly large numbers of foods, usually there are only a few that are in the high or even moderate category. By and large we find that the vast majority of IgG antibodies are in the lowest level. This means that the food may be safely eaten when rotated in the diet. It may be safely eaten periodically (often one to three times per week). However, on occasion, I come across someone who has very few foods that are safe. Often these clients may be down to only five to ten foods.

The questions are, in this situation, “What caused the problem in the first place?” and “What can and should I eat?”

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

Mast cells are immune cells used in both allergic and inflammatory reactions. They are located in the skin and mucous membranes so that they may guard the body against the environment and its intruders. They are most well known for their role in allergies and anaphylaxis, where they lose their histamine load, which causes a host of symptoms ranging from minor sniffles or hives to full on anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction. Mast cells are also important in wound healing and defense against infection. In some people, however, these mast cells tend to overreact, causing seemingly endless reactions that often do not make sense. These reactions can occur in response to food, drink, chemicals, changes in temperature, hormones, and even exercise.

This disorder is called mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).

A Range of Symptoms

In MCAS there is mast cell hyperactivity that can cause a variety of symptoms and signs that can range from fatigue, fever, weight gain or loss, sinusitis, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mood disorders, and even anaphylaxis. Most pronounced, however, is the loss of food after food after food. It can happen as a secondary disorder to autoimmune disease or other inflammatory conditions (including leaky gut syndrome). For some people the cause is considered idiopathic, indicating that we do not have a good explanation for why it is occurring. Regardless, what we see is a magnified response to essentially normal stimuli. Contrary to what one would expect, there is no real increase in the amount of mast cells. Rather, the mast cells can either become both more active and produce extra inflammatory mediators, or they are simply more easily triggered to degranulate.

Diagnosis and Treatment

MCAS is quite difficult to diagnose as it is not generally found with routine laboratory or radiologic testing. For this reason, patients are often dismissed or prescribed antidepressants. Even if suspected by the practitioner it may be difficult to confirm a MCAD diagnosis. Markers that may help with diagnosis include serum tryptase, serum chromogranin A, plasma heparin, Urinary N-methylhistamine, urinary prostaglandin D2, and urinary leukotriene E4. For this reason, many practitioners will diagnose the disorder if two or more symptoms are present with or without correlating lab tests. The key player in diagnosis is whether or not the treatment is effective.

Ironically, this seemingly complicated disorder has a surprisingly simple treatment plan. H1-blockers like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra, and H2-blockers such as Pepcid or Zantac are the primary medications used for this disorder and they are readily available over-the-counter. While medications can certainly help get symptoms under control, it is important to understand that other more functional strategies are important in helping to heal the body. First, helping to heal the gut and improve digestion can help prevent further of the food sensitivities that can contribute to mast cell activation.

Dietary Changes

Genetically, many people with this disorder have mutations to the enzymes DAO, APB1, or HMNT, all of which help to breakdown histamine. For many, a lowhistamine diet can be essential at the onset of this disorder. Foods high in histamine include fermented foods, alcohol, pickled

foods, mature cheeses, smoked meats, shell fish, beans, nuts, and wheat. Some foods are considered histamine liberators. These include most citrus fruits, strawberries, cocoa and chocolate, nuts, papaya, beans, tomatoes, wheat germ, and additives (benzoate, sulphites, nitrites, and glutamate).

Foods that block diamine oxidase (DAO) can also be problematic and include alcohol, black tea, energy drinks, green tea, and mate tea. Most fresh meats, fruits, vegetables, eggs, grains, cooking oils, herbs, and non-citrus juices are considered to be low in histamine. Other known dietary triggers may include sulfur, gluten, oxylates, salicylates, and lectin.

Working with a practitioner to identify triggers is essential in determining a safe diet. Improving metabolic processes is also helpful. Nutrigenomic analysis can identify

mutations to enzymes in methylation, detoxification, transulfation, urea cycle, and mitochondrial pathways, that may, in fact, worsen symptoms. Then, this information can be used to create a unique action plan to improve health.

eflexology has become a common practice in natural health. The concept of focusing on one part of the body to heal another is not new, and there is concrete evidence on how important oral health is and how it affects the rest of the body.

It’s obvious that if the dentition and oral cavity have some serious issues, it can be very hard to process and digest food properly.

Missing teeth can lead to an overall bite that is not correct. This leads to the stomach and intestines being over-worked in the process of digesting food.

This disease is caused by an inflammation response to the biofilm of bacteria in the mouth that slowly but surely destroys the tissue and bone around the teeth. Biofilm is responsible for other diseases, such as Otitis media, bacterial endocarditis and cystic fibrosis. This bacteria is not only destructive to the mouth. The biofilm of the mouth can enter the blood stream, thus affecting the heart by attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries. The inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque buildup which may contribute to swelling of the arteries. This same biofilm can be found in clogged arteries in the heart and is a key contributor to heart disease.

With this knowledge, it is crucial for people to realize that dental care is very important.

What You Need to Know

any people cringe at the thought of bacteria, and are shocked about facts relating to them. For example, studies have shown the average adult human body contains four pounds of bacteria. Bacteria cover the entire body, inside and out.

The digestive tract alone contains up to 5000 different species.

The Human Microbiome is Good for You The flora of the digestive tract is primarily composed of bacteria, but also includes additional microorganisms such as yeast. This entire ecosystem is referred to as the microbiome, and plays an essential role in human health. Humans have a symbiotic relationship with their microbiome, meaning we and the bacteria benefit from one another.

Role of the Microbiome The good bacteria colonized within the gut are so essential to health that some refer to the microbiome as its own organ system within the body.

One importance of having ample amounts of good bacteria is that they create a protective layer for the digestive tract, leaving no room for harmful bacterial to reside. Additionally, they contribute to a healthy lining of the gut wall, which provides a filter for unwanted allergens and pathogens. Any alterations in this protective barrier can lead to gastrointestinal infections or increased intestinal permeability, often referred to as leaky gut syndrome. With such loss of intestinal wall integrity, the body is more susceptible to rheumatoid conditions, allergic reactions, autoimmune diseases, and generalized inflammation.

Another important function of the microbiome is to facilitate the metabolism of various nutrients, which the bacteria can use as fuel sources. In doing so, they create byproducts that we are able to utilize for our own nutritional needs. Examples of nutrients gained from bacterial metabolism include vitamin K, short-chain fatty acids, folic acid, and biotin.

The Development of the Microbiome For the most part, a baby in the mother’s womb is sterile, meaning bacteria have not yet colonized the gastrointestinal tract. The natural way a baby becomes colonized with bacteria is by exiting the birth canal during delivery. During this process, the child is inoculated with the bacteria from the mother. This allows the baby to start developing a microbiome. Babies born via Cesarean section skip this colonization process, and instead are first exposed to bacteria from the surrounding environment. While this may have no long-term consequences for some, others born via C-section may develop allergies later in life because of this alteration in the initial colonization of bacteria. This exemplifies the correlation between immune health and the intestinal microbiome.

Alterations of the Microbiome As a person ages, the microbiome is altered by a number of factors, including diet, digestion, stress, hormones, infections, and environment. Sometimes, the alteration is beneficial, and helps with good bacteria survival. An example of this is eating fermented foods that contain helpful microorganisms called probiotics.

Other times, the factors can have negative effects on the flora, and can lead to microbial imbalances called dysbiosis. One example of this is a diet high in alcohol or refined carbohydrates, which can contribute to an overgrowth of yeast within the body.

Certain medications, such as antibiotics, steroids, and birth control pills, also can contribute. The damage done by these medications on the gut flora can be difficult to completely restore. That is why certain medications should not be used in excess, and —alternative treatments should be tried when appropriate.

Types of Dysbiosis Not all types of dysbiosis are created equally. Variations include an excess of normal flora, such as with yeast infections or small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), displacement of normal flora in inappropriate locations, presence of pathogenic bacteria, or a mutation in good bacteria as seen with drug resistant strains. Because of the vast differences in variation, treatment differs from person to person. It can range from antimicrobials to get rid of bad bacteria, probiotics to help with good bacteria, nutritional modifications, or alterations in medications. Working with a doctor is the best way to get proper treatment to help restore balance.

Dysbiosis Symptoms and Long-term Effects If you have dysbiosis, don’t ignore it. Dysbiosis diminishes the beneficial effects of a healthy ecosystem within the body, and has been linked to a number of conditions. Dysbiosis often causes common gastrointestinal signs and symptoms such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn. However, it can lead to other symptoms that may seem unrelated to gut health, such as acne, rashes, hives, headache, brain fog, and fatigue. Additionally, dysbiosis is under investigation for linkages to various rheumatoid conditions, autism, allergies, and even certain types of cancer.

While the complexity of dysbiosis continues to be researched, our understanding has come a long way in discovering the vast linkage between the human microbiome and health, allowing for the medical community to better help people restore balance within their bodies.

The food industry should be required to disclose to us every detail about the food they provide so we can choose what we put in our bodies.This American Revelation about food actually started years ago. Karen Hess, in 1977, wrote: “…we write with trepidation. How shall we tell our fellow Americans that our palates have been ravaged, that our food is awful, and that our most respected authorities on cookery are poseurs? Can most Americans be wrong?” “YES” was her response to her own question. Hess is credited with sparking the resurgence in farmers markets in New York and elsewhere. What does this have to do with dysbiosis? With health care in America?

Everything.

Dysbiosis – What is It? The basic definition of dysbiosis is “an imbalance of bacteria in the intestinal tract.” This bacteria, also called flora, is key to the digestion and assimilation of nutrients into the body. Most people are familiar with acidophilus and probiotics, which are some of the many species of flora in the digestive tract. There are many more species working diligently at processing food into nutrients. The balance of the bacteria is crucial to keeping the body healthy and keeping the opportunistic organisms in check. There are living yeasts known as candida, and bacteria like E.coli that reside in the intestinal tract harmlessly, as long as the proper balance of good bacteria outnumbers the opportunistic ones.

Digestive bacteria can be damaged by any number of things, such as antibiotics, which can result in irregular bowel movements, and/ or increase yeast, due to decrease in the good bacteria. If the balance is not corrected quickly, often using probiotics like acidophilus, the dysbiosis can become chronic. Chronic dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance) will cause digestive-tract dysfunction in many different ways.

Some patients will develop chronic diarrhea, some will suffer from constipation, and others will experience flatulence and bloating. The longer proper digestion is inhibited, the more the symptoms will increase. Celiac patients, for instance, have a genetic mutation that inhibits the ability to digest wheat. The result of this over time is chronic diarrhea. The diarrhea and dysbiosis will then lead to other health issues until the elimination of wheat in the diet and correction of bacterial balance in the digestive tract is accomplished.

Treating the Cause Resolves the Health Issues Dysbiosis can be looked at as a chicken or an egg, whichcomes-first situation. Does the dysbiosis cause illness or does the illness cause dysbiosis? Inside the digestive tract the microbial system lives symbiotically with the human body. When food is consumed, this garden of flora is responsible for helping to break food down into the nutrients that serve the rest of the system; nutrients that are needed to survive and thrive. It is, as I’m sure you have guessed, an incredibly complex process. There are many factors that all need to be in balance for this process to be efficient. An imbalance in just one part of the process can lead to many different health-related issues.

Dysbiosis will affect any and all parts of the body because each bodily function is important to the balance and proper function of all of the others. Health issues in other bodily functions can also cause the dysbiosis to occur, which will then lead to the symptoms and health issues.

For instance, what happens when the immune system malfunctions and begins to produce antibodies against a food, marking it as an intruder? What if the body decides to react by sending out antibodies every time that food is consumed? Antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to intruders; that process

is followed by another complex reaction that can end in physical symptoms because of the intruder.

When the immune system is reacting each and every time you eat a certain food, your body processes it and the immune system reacts. The number of symptoms that can ensue is endless and individual. One very common reaction is dysbiosis. This would make sense as the immune system reacts to where the problem is coming from and in this case it is the digestive tract.

However that isn’t the only system that will be affected. Dysbiosis causes widespread health issues. The symptoms and conditions can range from skin problems, like eczema or psoriasis, to neurological issues like depression or insomnia.

The breakdown of proteins turned into amino acids is necessary for the neurotransmitters to be formed. This is so important! If the amino acids are not broken down, or are used up someplace else before they can get across the blood brain barrier, there will be a resultant effect on some or all of the neurotransmitters. This is an incredibly simple way to describe a single effect that happens when there is dysbiosis in the digestive tract. The bottom line is, however, if someone is having issues with neurotransmitters, they need to address any digestive issues as part of a treatment protocol to correct a possible cause of the imbalance.

Your Pharmaceuticals Won’t Work Even the pharmaceuticals you take might not be doing what they are intended to do if you don’t have the correct balance of digestive flora. Drugs are developed based on the expectation that the digestive tract is fully functional with a healthy bacterial balance. If the bacteria is out of balance the drug may not get digested properly and the effect can cause many different reactions. The drug may not work, or it may create side effects, or the patient could have a reaction that isn’t known to be a side effect because of the improper bacterial balance... the resulting symptoms can be endless and individual. Once another drug is added to the mix the complications may increase.

How Detrimental is Dysbiosis in Children?

Bacteria, fungi, algae, parasites, and plants use a seven-step metabolic route known as the shikimate pathway for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids; glyphosate inhibits this pathway, causing the plant to die, which is why it’s so effective as an herbicide. Monsanto says humans don’t have this shikimate pathway, so it’s perfectly safe. Dr. Seneff points out, however, that our gut bacteria do have this pathway, and that’s crucial because these bacteria supply our body with crucial amino acids.

Roundup thus kills beneficial gut bacteria, allowing pathogens to grow; interferes with the synthesis of amino acids including methionine, which leads to shortages in critical neurotransmitters and folate; chelates (removes) important minerals like iron, cobalt and manganese; and much more.

Even worse, she notes, additional chemicals in Roundup are untested because they’re classified as “inert,” yet according to a 2014 study in BioMed Research International, these chemicals are capable of amplifying the toxic effects of Roundup hundreds of times over. Glyphosate is present in unusually high quantities in the breast milk of American mothers, at anywhere from 760 to 1,600 times the allowable limits in European drinking water. Americans with the knowledge that non-organic food may well play a part in our spiraling-out-of-control medical system can change everything. Our society can cause the food producers in the country

Consumers can buy from local farmers and ask them how their food is produced, pushing the local economy and the demand in local and organically grown food.

The more good whole food consumed, the better the nutrients, and the lower the likelihood that dysbiosis will result. Vitamin D3: A Study-Supported Essential Supplement Part Two

ust how important is vitamin D3 supplementation? According to Michael Holick, MD, PhD, the world’s leading vitamin D researcher, some of the scientific literature indicates that, “We could probably decrease health care costs across the board by 25% if everybody had optimal vitamin D status.” Part One of this two-part article discussed how vitamin D3 functions in the body, recommended doses, and the science supporting its dietary supplementation in connection with autoimmune diseases (e.g., psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac, IBD/Crohn’s, Hashimoto’s), bone disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Discussion of additional compelling scientific evidence continues below.

How The Body Produces and Stores Vitamin D As noted in Part One, the body produces vitamin D when the sun’s ultraviolet rays strike the skin. Vitamin D also can be obtained from certain foods and dietary supplements. Whatever the source, vitamin D is initially biologically inert and must be activated in the body by two separate enzyme-assisted chemical processes (hydroxylations). In the liver, the first hydroxylation converts vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], also known as calcidiol. In the kidney, the second hydroxylation forms the physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], also known as calcitriol.

The level of concentration of 25(OH)D (calcidiol) in blood serum (the component that contains neither red nor white cells) is the best indicator of vitamin D status. 25(OH)D serum concentration indicates exposure to all vitamin D sources, but does not indicate the amount of vitamin D stored in body tissues. Also, it is not clear to what extent 25(OH)D concentration indicates health status or outcomes.

Circulating 1,25(OH)2D (calcitriol) is generally not a good indicator of vitamin D status, in part because serum concentrations are closely regulated by parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphate.

Also, levels of calcitriol do not typically decrease until vitamin D deficiency is severe.

According to the non-profit, non-governmental Institute of Medicine, most people are at risk of vitamin D deficiency at serum 25(OH)D concentrations below 30 nmol/L, although some are potentially at risk for inadequacy at levels ranging from 30–50 nmol/L. Levels greater than or equal to 50 nmol/L are sufficient for 97.5% of the population, while serum concentrations over 125 nmol/L are associated with potential adverse effects. Like other fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin D is stored in fat tissue, enabling the body to mobilize its own reserves if daily intake falters temporarily. This means that excessive doses of vitamin D can build up to toxic levels, but Harvard Medical School reports, “it takes massive overdosing to produce toxicity.” (See Part One for more on this issue).

Available Forms of Vitamin D3 Supplements Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the form that most effectively raises blood levels, is derived from fish (the skins of fatty fish or cod liver oil) or lanolin (sheep’s wool). It is available in various supplement doses ranging from 400iu to as high as 10,000iu. Vitamin D3 is available for children and adults in soft gels, tablets or capsules (especially in dry, oil-free form for those with sensitive stomachs), chewable tablets, liquid, drops, and transdermal creams. Some brands offer gluten-free options.

Scientific Support for Vitamin D3 Supplementation By the end of 2012, nearly 34,000 studies were published on the effects of vitamin D. When considering whether to add vitamin D3 to your dietary supplement regimen, you may want to keep in mind its impact on the health conditions discussed below.

Autism According to John Cannell, MD, himself mildly autistic, the positive correlation between vitamin D and autism is theoretical.

However, studies indicate that vitamin D could likely help children with autism through its: (1) anti-inflammatory and anti-autoimmune activities; (2) great ability to positively impact (upregulate) neurotrophins (the family of proteins that induce the development, function, and survival of nerve and brain cells); and/or (3) stimulation of antioxidant pathways (especially glutathione, which helps detoxify the brain and protects nerve cells and nerve conduction critical to mental processing). Cannell suggests that adequate doses of vitamin D (enough to obtain blood levels of 50-80 ng/mL of calcidiol [25(OH)D]) may be a potential treatment for core symptoms in some cases of children’s autism (Med Hypotheses 2013 Aug).

Cognitive Decline In 2012, scientists reported that vitamin D deficiency is linked to cognitive impairment (Scand J Clin Lab Invest Suppl. 2012). They explained that vitamin D receptors are widespread in brain tissue, and that the biologically active form of vitamin D has shown neuroprotective effects, including the ability to clear amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. They also reported that two large prospective studies indicate that low vitamin D may increase the risk of cognitive decline, but encouraged the development of large, randomized controlled trials to determine whether vitamin D supplementation can prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Pulmonary rehabilitation is an important treatment for COPD patients, who are often vitamin D deficient. Exactly how vitamin D affects COPD development is unclear. However, its deficiency increases with the severity of the disease, and studies show that vitamin D can alter immune cell activity, inhibit inflammatory response, and regulate airway smooth muscles. One study of 151 subjects found that higher plasma levels of vitamin D are associated with increased exercise capacity in COPD patients (Ann Med. 2013 Feb). In another study of 50 COPD patients, researchers discovered that monthly doses of 100,000iu significantly improved respiratory muscle strength and oxygen uptake (Respiratory Research 2012 September).

Depression/SAD It is well-established that vitamin D deficiency can cause seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and general depression. In one four-year study of 12,594 patients, researchers concluded that low vitamin D levels are associated with depressive symptoms and that patients with a history of depression may be an important target for assessment of vitamin D levels (Mayo Clin Proc. 2011 Nov).

According to Dr. Holick, animal studies have shown that vitamin D will elevate mood by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

It is thus thought that healthy vitamin D status can improve people’s serotonin levels, mood, and general feeling of well-being.

Osteoarthritis (OA) OA is the most common joint disorder in the United States.

Old age, female gender, overweight/ obesity, knee injury, repetitive use of joints, bone density, muscle weakness, and joint laxity, all play roles in the development of OA, particularly in the weightbearing joints.

Low tissue levels of vitamin D may impair bone’s ability to respond optimally to processes in OA and thus predispose to disease progression. One study reported that low intake and low serum levels of vitamin D each appear to be associated with a three-fold increased risk for progression of OA of the knee (Ann Intern Med. 1996 September). Another study found that high levels of vitamin D protected against hip OA characterized by joint space narrowing (Arthritis Rheum. 1999 May). In this writer’s experience, the proper doses of vitamin D with calcium, magnesium, and other micronutrients, reverse osteoarthritis.

Given the ample historical support in the scientific literature for vitamin D3 supplementation in connection with a wide variety of conditions, it would best serve patients to take into account its importance to lifelong health maintenance.

As we begin to learn more about ASD, we are finding that it is so much more than a psychiatric disorder. Every child with ASD is given the same diagnosis, yet they are so unique in how it affects them and what treatment approach will work for them. This uniqueness gives more credibility to the ‘Spectrum’ in Autism Spectrum Disorders. The ‘Spectrum’ may be explained by the fact that every child has had a different pre-conception, conception, in-utero, birth, and childhood environmental influence on their genetic make-up.

It is common understanding at this time that ASD is caused by environmental influence on genetic predisposition.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is Increasing at an Alarming Rate

Autism is a Multi-Systemic Disease ASD does not just affect the brain. It also affects other systems in the body such as the nervous, immune, detoxification, and digestive system. These systems are all intricately connected with one another. The walls of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract are composed of the enteric nervous system which governs its function. The enteric nervous system is comprised of the same nerve cells that make up the brain and, interestingly enough, communicates with the brain.

The GI tract is also lined with immune cells; in fact that is where close to 80% of our immune system resides. Most of the body’s detoxification takes place in the liver, which is a vital accessory organ of the digestive system.

The following is a glimpse of the research that has been done supporting the notion that ASD can affect multiple body systems.

utism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is now being diagnosed in 1 in every 68 children, according to the most recent data (2010) from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). When the number is adjusted for gender, it’s 1 in every 42 boys and 1 in every 189 girls.

Just two years prior in 2008, it was 1 in 88. The number of diagnoses is continuing to increase at an exponential rate, and with that so should our responsibility to research, identify, address, and treat the causes of this disease. It is imperative that medical providers continue to stay abreast of the latest research, evaluation and treatment so that they may be able to prevent and treat ASD in our children.

Definition According to the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5), which was published in 2013, Autism Spectrum Disorders are characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction, and restrictive repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities. This definition and source of definition classifies ASD as a psychiatric disorder.

Nervous System/Brain: Altered neurotransmitter levels, abnormal melatonin levels, SERT gene variation (serotonin receptor gene), MET gene variation (responsible for brain development, immune system, and GI repair).

Immune System: Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines; Proinflammatory response to dietary proteins; increased family hx of autoimmune disease; maternal exposure to infectious agents during pregnancy; Th2 shift.

Detoxification System: Impaired methylation and sulfation, MTHFR gene mutation, low DPP-IV enzyme levels, COMT gene variant (responsible for Methylation and Neurotransmitter breakdown); low antioxidant enzyme activity; heavy metal toxicity.

Digestive System: Decreased activity of digestive enzymes; lactose intolerance; opioid peptides found in urine (gluten and dairy); nutritional deficiencies (Vitamin D, Zn; amino acids); altered fatty acid profiles; dysbiosis (suterella); inflammatory markers; food allergies.

Symptoms In addition to the impaired social, communicative and behavioral symptoms mentioned in the DSM-5 definition, gastrointestinal symptoms are reported by as many as 70% of people with ASD. Gastrointestinal symptoms can include chronic constipation or diarrhea, alternating constipation with diarrhea, gastro-intestinal reflux disease (GERD), and food allergies/ sensitivities/ intolerances. Sleep problems and sensory issues are also commonly seen in ASD.

Causes The single cause of ASD has yet to be determined. At this point in time it is theorized that at some point between pre-conception and diagnosis, ASD develops as a result of one or a combination of any of the following:

1.Exposure to drugs, environmental chemicals, heavy metals, or pesticides, and having a genetic mutation in the gene that codes for detoxification.

2. Exposure to an infectious agent eliciting an immune response leading up to brain inflammation, autoimmune process and brain injury.

3. Dietary factors such as gluten (protein found in wheat, barley and rye) and casein (protein found in dairy) not being digested properly, acting as opiate neuropeptides in the brain.

4. Nutritional deficiency of Vitamin D or Zinc 5. GI inflammation caused by poor diet, food sensitivities/ intolerance, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, toxins, medications (Abx, PPIs, NSAIDs, etc.).

6. Dysbiosis.

Autism and Dysbiosis: Why the Microbiota is so Important The digestive system appears to be at the center of this multi-systemic disease, and so it would be prudent to discuss the microbiome and why it is so important in ASD. The human microbiome consists of mostly bacteria (about 400-500 species) and yeast. The microbiome lines the entire GI tract and is essential to our health. Some of the functions of the microbiome are to decrease inflammation, support the immune system, produce certain vitamins and fatty acids, aid in digestion, and protect the GI lining. The microbiome can be altered/ disrupted by many factors including birthing method (C-section vs. vaginal delivery), breastfed vs. formula fed, poor diet, malabsorption, frequent antibiotic use, GI inflammation, abnormal immune function, or digestive enzyme deficiencies (disaccharidase, lactase).

Once disrupted, it can lead to significant local and systemic inflammation, impaired enzyme activity, impaired nutrient synthesis and absorption, impaired detoxification, and intestinal permeability. Interestingly, the resulting damages from disrupting the microbiome are all implicated in the multi-system pathogenesis of ASD. Many diseases have been found to be associated with dysbiosis, including but not limited to Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, clostridium difficile colitis, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and multiple sclerosis.

he future health of Connecticut’s water, and all of us who use water (that would be you), depend on the actions of every individual. No matter where we live, work, or play, we are somehow connected to a nearby river, stream, lake, pond, wetland, or shoreline. The rain that falls around us will always move according to gravity, following a path to the nearest downhill body of water and, in Connecticut, eventually to Long Island Sound.

Your Individual, Everyday Actions are Critical This simple fact means that the health of Long Island Sound—and every river and stream that flows into it—is connected to how we live on the land. Yet many people still think that water pollution is caused mostly by discharges from business and industry and are unaware of the unique role we play in determining the fate of our waterways.

The Health of Our Rivers is Declining The good news is that industrial discharges are largely under control, thanks to the Clean Water Act passed in 1972. With passage of this act, we saw the number of healthy rivers across the nation (those considered clean enough for fishing and swimming) increase from just 20% in the mid-1900s to 57% by 1994. The bad news is that just ten years later we saw that number drop slightly to 53% and by 2012, only 48% of rivers and streams were considered clean enough for fishing and swimming.

Nature’s Cleaning Systems are Overloaded With industrial discharges under control, what is causing the decline in river health? According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is polluted runoff. Runoff is the water that does not soak into the ground during a storm. Forests and meadows are excellent places for water to soak into the ground, but with a growing population these areas are giving way to more developed land (i.e. more buildings, roads, parking lots, lawns) and the volume of runoff is increasing. So is the amount of polluted runoff—water that picks up nutrients, salts, sediments, bacteria, pesticides, and other widelyused chemicals (like cleaning supplies and automotive fluids) from the landscape and carries them to nearby waterways.

With fewer natural areas for water to soak into the ground and more pollutants being used in excess, nature’s cleaning systems are overloaded, causing more pollutants to end up in our waterways.

Ten Easy Steps We All Can Take With the health of our nation’s rivers declining over the past two decades, now is the time for you to make a real and positive difference around your home to reduce polluted runoff. Here are just some of the simple, “River Smart” steps you can take: 1. Nurture native trees, shrubs, and flowers. Native species require no fertilizers, pesticides or watering to stay healthy. They thrive in the local habitat and provide great food and shelter birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

2. Reduce the size of grass lawns. Lawns limit the amount of water that can soak into the ground and often require large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides. If you do have a lawn, follow the rule “mow high and let it lie.” By letting your grass grow taller, you also let the roots grow deeper, and leaving the clippings provides a natural fertilizer. Altogether, you will improve the lawn’s ability to absorb water, stabilize soil, control weeds, and not dry out.

3. Limit the amount of paved areas and create natural places for the water to soak into the ground. Rain gardens and swales are excellent ways to attenuate and treat runoff from roofs and driveways.

Pervious material like gravel, porous concrete, and field stone can be used for patios, driveways, and walkways.

4. Plant or grow natural buffers at the edges of rivers/streams, lakes/ponds, and wetlands. These buffers – made up of trees, shrubs, woody and herbaceous perennials and ground cover – prevent shoreline erosion, reduce flood impacts, capture and treat runoff by trapping sediment and removing nutrients, regulate water temperature, and provide food and habitat for wildlife.

5. Reduce or eliminate use of fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals wash from your property with every rainstorm into a nearby waterway where they can cause algal blooms and be deadly to aquatic organisms. Before applying chemicals, get your soil tested to determine what you actually need and, if necessary, use only a slow-release, low-concentration fertilizer or natural compost.

If applying pesticides, spot treat only when absolutely necessary and carefully follow the safety guidelines provided.

6. Dispose of pet waste in the trash or a pet-waste processor. It is full of bacteria that can make our waterways unsafe for drinking, swimming and fishing.

7. Have your septic tank pumped and inspected regularly. A faulty system can release harmful bacteria to our waterways and can be costly to repair.

Every system is different, but a good rule of thumb is to pump out every three to five years.

8. Check and fix all the taps on sinks, baths, toilets, and hoses for leaks and drips. Upgrade to more water-efficient appliances and fixtures, like those with the “WaterSense” logo (the water version of EnergyStar).

9. Dispose of unused and unwanted medications in the trash; do not flush them down the toilet.

The fate of these chemicals interacting in the environment is still unclear and we are only just beginning to understand their effects on aquatic organisms.

A Seaside Retreat at the Tucker House Inn

I

f you fell in love with Nantucket the first time you stepped foot on that island, you will love Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Seattle just as much. There’s something so relaxing about taking a ferry to an island, it feels like you are really escaping reality. Sparkling, crystal clear blue waters and dark green forested islands abound. As soon as we docked in Friday Harbor, I noticed the similarities to Nantucket. If you sometimes long for a time when life was simpler, more tranquil, and slower paced, you’ll be enchanted by Friday Harbor’s ambience—a charming, walkable seaport built on a hill leading up from the harbor. Stroll through quaint villages, catch a glimpse of harbor seals and the magnificent, endangered orca whales, kayak the glassy waters along the shoreline, cycle quiet miles of country roads or browse unique shops and feast on delicious local fare at many diverse restaurants.

A short walk from the harbor took us to the Tucker House Inn, which is perched on a hill overlooking the town. The Inn consists of a labyrinth of buildings including two Victorian Houses – one built in 1898 and the other at the turn of the century, plus three cottages.

We stayed in the Goose in the Pond cottage which was an amazing, cozy accommodation. We loved the king feather top bed, cathedral ceiling with skylight, and remote controlled gas fireplace which came in handy as the temperatures dropped quickly at night. Right out your door is a grassy lawn, with a weeping willow and shade gardens. They seem to have thought of everything as the kitchen is fully equipped to make your own meals. I loved that they use organic cleaners and vinegar in lieu of highly scented fabric softener and they stock bathrooms with private-label handmade organic body products in refillable dispensers versus individual amenity bottles.

And the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies that were waiting for us in our room upon check-in were delicious!

Some of the other great ecofriendly initiatives they have implemented are: • Recycling throughout the Inn, Restaurant, and guest rooms.

• Purchased energy star appliances for all replacements.

• Purchased propane fireplaces to replace wood burning fireplaces.

• Installed low-flush toilets, low water usage showers and drip irrigation system for the gardens.

• Replacing inefficient lighting with fluorescent and energy efficient or outdoor solar lights whenever possible.

• Supply guests with hang tags for guest rooms to educate and encourage conservation while on vacation.

• Developed a composting project with local farms to recycle kitchen scraps for chicken and cow feed and for their own composting.

• Encourage guests to walk on the ferry and leave their cars, use public transportation, or bicycles to get around the Island.

Provide guests with the complimentary use of bicycles.

• Developed and foster relationships with local farmers and fisherman to ensure the very best fresh seasonal and local produce, meats, fish, and cheeses available are served each day.

• Growing herbs, edible flowers, cut flowers at the Inn for use in the guest rooms and for food preparation.

• Providing guests with filtered water in guest rooms, suites and cottages to discourage and eliminate disposal plastic bottles.

Our trip was way too short but we loved the Tucker House Inn and they even sent us on our way with a breakfast-to-go bag as we had to catch an early ferry. While Nantucket may be closer, it’s definitely worth the trip to Friday Harbor!

After all this exercise, we were starving and ready for an amazing meal at Jonathan’s which was a classy and intimate spot offering casual-fine dining with a contemporary lounge atmosphere, exquisite gardens, and a 600-Gallon Fish Tank! The chef uses local products whenever possible, many of them farm-raised at Jonathan’s Farm in South Berwick, Maine. You can’t leave Maine without trying the Maine lobster bisque, which was super creamy and delicious. We also enjoyed the Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with shitake, enoki and oyster mushrooms and fresh sage, truffle oil and manchego cheese – to die for! And they had my favorite dessert – an award winning chocolate mousse.

With only a few days in Yosemite, our time to explore the park was limited as it can take close to 2 hours to get to certain trails. We were lucky enough to hike the Panaroma trail which had unbelievable views of Half Dome. We traveled into Yosemite valley and hiked the Inspiration Point trail – 1.3 miles pretty much straight uphill, but you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of El Capitan and Half Dome amongst others. The last day we explored Mariposa Grove and the beauty of the Giant Sequoias.

M

oab is a cool, little southwestern town populated with locals and tourists looking for their next outdoor adventure. Moab doesn’t offer quite the amount of dining options and shopping that Sedona does, but I actually found it a refreshing change from the commercialized cities of the west.

With a landscape that takes your breath away on a daily basis, miles of trails to explore and activities like Colorado river white water rafting, 4-wheeling, hot air ballooning and zip lining – who needs shopping anyway?

After a long day of hiking and climbing over rocks, we were so happy to arrive at the Cali Cocchita B&B owned by Dave and Kim Boger. Just a block off Main St. and walking distance to great restaurants and shops, they’ve created a beautiful and cozy oasis for their guests. One of the first homes built in Moab, Cali Cochitta (house of dreams) is a late 1800s Victorian, restored and renovated to its original, classic style and truly is a dream.

Walking through a lush grape arbor, we found ourselves in their intimate and inviting patio and garden area. There are plenty of comfortable places to sit and relax with a glass of wine after an exhausting day in the parks.

We stayed in the Alebrejas Room (or “Wing Dreams”) which had the most luxurious bed you could melt right into. The shower was made of recycled tin which gave it a really unique look. I was excited to see soap and shampoo dispensers in the bathroom and ceramic mugs in the rooms, eliminating the waste of plastic cups and half used toiletries and soap. Dave told me that they also use energy efficient light bulbs throughout the entire B&B and eco-friendly cleaning products. They have installed low flow toilets in all of the rooms and purchased a dishwasher that uses less water and has a sanitary rating far superior to traditional dishwashers. They buy organic produce locally grown when in season and feel that the practices of chemical free farming are essential.

But let’s get to the breakfast – which is half the reason you stay at a B&B, right? Breakfast was served at a long dinner table, family style at 8:00 am every morning out on the grape vine canopied patio lit with tiny lights. What a great idea, as you get to meet and talk to other guests about where they are from and what activities they’ve been doing in Moab. When I learned that David (a.k.a. Moose) had more than 20 years’ experience working in fine restaurants and country clubs, catering for groups as large as 5,000 and serving many international dignitaries including former U.S. Presidents, I knew we were in for a real treat.

The breakfasts were absolutely amazing and delicious. One morning we were served an egg frittata with crumbled sausage, peppers and tomato; fresh fruit and yogurt; and hot buttered biscuits with jam. The next morning we enjoyed eggs benedict on a warm biscuit with shaved ham, tomato and spinach. Mouthwatering…is all I can say!

Dave and Kim were wonderful hosts with a wealth of information about the area. In fact, Dave told us about a hike out to the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park that we probably would have missed had we not asked him for ideas. This was a 6-hour, strenuous and challenging hike that took you over rocks, up steep inclines and to the best part…a slot canyon that you could walk down into and through. Exhausting, but totally worth it. The next day he told us to head out towards Arches National Park and drive towards Potash to find a scarcely traveled trail out to Corona Arch. That was unbelievable – my favorite hike by far and we only encountered two other hikers. Corona Arch is stunning – we were lucky to be there on a beautiful, sunny day without a cloud in the sky. Of course the arches in the national park are not to be missed, but you will have to deal with crowds of other tourists – which doesn’t make for the best pictures. We were so grateful to Dave for letting us in on some of the lesser traveled hiking trails.

Wake Up…

Your Life is Waiting!

H

ave you been asking yourself, “Why am I here?”, “What is my purpose?” Do you feel like you’re living someone else’s dream? Do you long to jump out of bed each day excited to be alive because you are completely fulfilled in your work and personal life? Sometimes we wonder if it’s even possible.

But the truth is that life is short and we can’t afford to waste another moment wishing we had another career, another relationship or another life.

We take so much for granted sometimes and just expect that there will always be another tomorrow, but what if there isn’t?

What if you knew you had a limited number of days left? What would you do? Where would you go? Who would you spend your time with? All of a sudden, we would start telling people how we feel, we would do things we’ve always wanted to do and go places we’ve only dreamed about. Why can’t we choose to live that way now when the days seem unlimited? It would bring much more peace and fulfillment to our lives.

The answer may be in finding our purpose and aligning it with our passions. To find peace you have to truly know yourself, what your soul wants, what your ego wants, as both play an important role in finding your purpose and living your dreams. Your soul will give you clues as to what your purpose is, while your ego will put you in action on obtaining your goals and desires. We need to respect the needs of both in order for the process to work.

In the meantime, following the steps below will get you started on your path to finding your purpose in this life.

1. Examine your past. List three times in your life when you were excited and passionate about what you were doing in your career or personal life. When did you feel you were making a difference? Explore any common themes between them.

2. Live like there’s no tomorrow. Make a list of what you would do if you only had a year to live. Look for common themes on your list.

3. Spend time alone. Find some quiet time to think about who you are, what you represent, and what you would like to create in the world.

4. Build your dream team. Find people who will support you in finding your purpose and living your dream. Ask them about what qualities they see in you and what kind of impact you have had on them.

5. Evaluate if your potential purpose aligns with your dream.

For example, if your purpose is to communicate information to help people and your dream is to be a public speaker then you are in alignment.

If you find that the path to finding your purpose is a long process, remember to enjoy the steps along the way. Isn’t it all about what we learn on the journey than what’s at the end of the road?
