Stress, Anxiety, Depression…

Is It All In Your Head?

o cut to the chase, the simple answer is, probably not.

According to a recent study published in the Journal Epidemiology and Psychiatry Science, there is an epidemic of anxiety and depression sweeping our country. One in six Americans take at least one psychiatric medication and many more people are living life with undiagnosed feelings of low grade anxiety and depression.

After spending 3 years working in the psychiatric field some 20 plus years ago, I came to the conclusion that mental and emotion issues are not just situational or behavioral. Nor are they resolved through medication. This revelation changed the course of my life as I was determined to understand what I observed in institutions whose approach rarely resolved the patient’s condition.

It wasn’t until I started practicing functional medicine, reading the scientific literature and seeing the turnaround in many patients that I began to understand what was happening. Specifically, that the root of much of the suffering is based on both a nervous system entrainment, functional imbalance in multiple organ systems, nutrient deficiencies and hormonal dysfunction. This root of the problem either creates or perpetuates the feelings of negativity, anxiety and low grade stress.

For example, your nervous system regulates the fight/flight mechanism vs the rest/repair. When you condition it to overreact to non-life threatening situations, eventually, for lack of a better description, the body will get stuck in fight/flight. You will feel anxious, tired but “wired”, hormones will get depleted and you may feel depressed. You may have difficulty sleeping or a host of other symptoms. A simple test using Heart Rate Variability can tell us if this is the case and then through the use of acupuncture, stress reduction techniques, specific herbal and nutriceutical therapy you can help your body pivot back to its normal rest and relaxed state. Then your body can heal, hormones can regenerate and you will feel more able to handle life. Another example is the relation between digestive health and mood. Most of the “feel good” hormone, serotonin, is made in the digestive track. If you have a poor diet or poor digestive health, it can trigger everything from depression to chronic migraines. So repairing digestion would be the path to improving mood. In most cases I have seen, there is generally a dysfunction in multiple systems, not just one.

These are just examples that show that the way to good mental health is not necessarily through the pharmaceutical approach but from finding the root cause. It is then that you can restore your mental wellness and have a more positive outlook in life.

Workshops on Consciousness, Transformation and Mindfulness at The Graduate Institute

T

he pioneering efforts of Martin Seligman have resulted in popular books about both positive psychology and happiness. However, more recently, Seligman has said that the good life is more akin to flourishing than happiness. Flourishing, Seligman points out, includes these five essential elements: (1) positive emotion, (2) engagement – the flow state, (3) relationships, (4) meaning, and (5) accomplishments.

What might be missing from the five elements of flourishing is the element of Self-Realization, as exemplified by the being of existence rather than the doing. This domain includes being present, holding conscious awareness, and experiencing the benefits that derive from a contemplative practice.

Let’s take a deep dive into the self-realization aspect called the “holding of conscious awareness.” First, one recognizes that on the one hand, there is the awareness of consciousness, and on the other hand, there are the objects of that awareness. The objects of awareness are the thoughts, feelings, sensations and emotions that we experience. In our everyday life, awareness moves from one thought, feeling, sensation, or emotion to another. The day goes by with a steady stream of thoughts and feelings and we never think about who is doing the thinking and feeling.

Often, instructions for meditation include following the breath, or repeating a mantra. Awareness of the breath or the mantra is a focusing meditation in which one focuses on a fixed object, a form of mind training moving away from the usual state of the constantly moving mind. But holding conscious awareness without content is different in that there is no focusing on any content at all. Instead there is awareness of awareness itself. Thoughts may come and go, like clouds moving in the sky, but the awareness is on the awareness itself, not the clouds. We just let the clouds be clouds and not get hooked by them. The benefit of this practice is learning to be present in open awareness, which leads to the opening of the heart and a growth in compassion.

When you think a thought, say to yourself that this thought is just my mind, then notice the space within which the thought arises. That is the nature of mind. This is naked awareness. The nature of mind is like the clear sky, while the mind is like the clouds of thoughts, feelings, sensations and emotions that float by. Sometimes there are so many clouds one can’t even see the sky. Other times, the clouds dissipate, and the sky appears. Then the sun shines with rays of light penetrating the sky and reaching the earth. This represents the spiritual flow of light to the heart and awakening of compassion.

The inflammatory response within is how our body tells us something has gone wrong. Acute inflammation is our bodies’ natural response to tissue damage, like when we get a bump, bruise or cut. I

have to admit, I’ve been dying to try this for months now after I first heard of the new cutting-edge, non-invasive therapy called cryotherapy. My first experience at Imagine Float in Avon was really cool – literally! For three minutes, I stood in a chamber with dry, vaporized nitrogen swirling around me. Cryotherapy is the practice of using cold temperatures to promote natural healing and wellness. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) stimulates your body using extreme cold produced by dry, vaporized nitrogen.

A three-minute session lowers the skin temperature, causes your nervous system to fire, constricts blood vessels, reduces inflammation and sends blood back to your core for reoxygenation. When the session ends, fresh, oxygenated blood rushes out, carries nutrients and anti-inflammatory proteins to speed recovery. Cryotherapy improves mood and energy, increases fat and calorie burning and decreases muscle soreness and fatigue.

Hypnosis for What Hurts

D

id you know that your mind has the power to complexly anesthetize your body? Or that hypnosis is used as an anesthetic to perform surgery? In Europe, and more so now in the States, thousands of surgeries are performed using hypno-sedation instead of general anesthesia! If your mind can do that, it can certainly help you manage your day-to-day pain. Here’s another fun fact, a lot of body pain comes from pain at the mental/emotional levels, which is why people suffering with depression and anxiety experience more physical pain than those who don’t. Hypnosis can help with that too.

Hypnosis works for what hurts – but how? To be honest, we don’t yet know all the details of exactly how it works because the brain is an incredibly complex organ - but here’s what we do know.

Our minds process information in two directions, from the bottom up and from the top down. A bottom up flow takes raw sensory data (information from our 5 senses) and carries it up to higher processing regions in the brain, each region adding more and more detail to what we perceive.

Top down processing is the opposite. What we experience comes down from the higher processing regions, instead of up from our five senses. Top down processing means that if the top is convinced, the bottom level sensory data will be overruled. This helps explain the power of hypnosis because hypnosis directly accesses the higher processing regions in the brain – providing positive suggestions for comfort to those areas. If the client allows these positive suggestions in, then those positive suggestions will override the pain information that would normally come up from the senses.

For example, in one experiment hypnotized subjects had their hands immersed in “painfully hot” water but were told it was comfortably warm. When PET (positron emission tomography) studies were done, they showed that hypnosis not only altered their perception of the pain, but it literally altered blood flow to the pain sensing parts of the brain.

y passion for skincare started in the early to mid 1980's when I attended Xavier High School and was part of Brother Houlihan's Introductory to Physical Science Class (aka-IPS). The Benefits of Local and Farm to Table Eating

quick Google search will reveal a list of upscale “farm to table” restaurants in nearby Connecticut towns that serve a range of cuisines and types of experiences from small plates to prix fixe menu options. Anyone lucky enough to be able to enjoy a meal in a “farm to table” restaurant can attest to the taste benefits of eating small batch cooking of fresh, locally sourced food. Thankfully, the movement which was initiated by famous chefs for the benefit of their clientele, has grown to include the growing availability of fresh food at local farmer’s markets, local direct farm sales, and community supported agriculture shares.

Spending grocery money on fresh vegetables instead of packaged foods can feel challenging for busy parents and young adults, because the food must be cooked soon after purchase, and we have all experienced twinges of guilt as pristine carrots wilt uneaten in our vegetable bins. However, there is also the pleasure of being inspired to create a new dish to use the tangy daikon that was purchased on whim at the farmer’s market.

Hydroponics vs Soil-grown Food Many Americans live on salad purchased from corporations that depend on hydroponic grown lettuce grown in factory farms using hydroponic technology. These indoor farms use liquid minerals and growth promoters in water, along with UV lights to grow large and consistent crops of lettuce and salad greens. Contrast this with the soil grown salad greens available at local farms and farmer’s markets. Soil has a living layer of humus at the surface, where minerals and micronutrients are made biologically available as opposed to the synthetic minerals preferred in hydroponic farming methods. Eating food grown in soil nourished with natural compost allows for more biologically available nutrients, as well as better taste.

Supporting Local Growers Food security is an issue that most Americans have never had to face, but dependence on factory farming using seeds with little diversity and grown with commercial herbicides and pesticides puts in question food availability in the advent of the failure of these technologies, or in a situation where transport is disrupted. Supporting local farmers insures local food security in the case of national or regional crisis.

Six Reasons to Join the Local and Farm to Table Food Movement 1. Diversify Your Food Buying local food is a good way to introduce new foods and recipes. A farmers’ market offers a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to help you expand your taste buds and your nutritional intake.

2. Help the Environment Buying your food from farm to table is exceptionally environmentally friendly. Some produce you find in stores and restaurants come long distances to get to your plate. Forget the planes, trains, trucks, and boats! The produce at your local farmers’ market only traveled a short distance to get to you.

3. Ditch Processed Foods Farm to table food is healthier than processed and packaged foods. In addition to being fresher, locally grown food probably contains fewer calories, fat, sugar, and carbohydrates than the prepackaged food you find at the store.

4. More Nutrients Food that travels from long distances doesn’t have as many nutrients as locally grown food. Produce that has to make a long trek to your grocery store is often picked before it’s ripe and fully ready to eat, which can reduce its nutritional value.

5. Better Taste Locally grown food tastes better. Farm to table food is grown to taste as good as possible while mass-produced foods are grown in quantity. Both taste and nutritional content are retained when produce ripens naturally.

6. Educate Your Kids Farm to table can be educational. If you live in the city or the suburbs, kids might not even realize how much farmland is in their state. Taking them to a farmers’ market can open their eyes to the amazing things that farms produce.

For owners Nick Poulos and Steven Donahue, it was a dream to own an Inn. Nick’s parents inspired him to travel and see the world. They also taught him that you have one life and if you have a dream, figure out a way to make it happen.

For 15 years, Nick kept a file folder of ideas, articles, and clippings of things he wanted in their Inn one day. He also kept meticulous notes on what he didn’t like in hotels and Inns that he stayed in. Nick’s 30-year retail career in Senior Management continued to develop his skills and would eventually financially support his dream.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of person Nick is, many of his past bosses and coworkers have come to experience the Inn. That’s pretty impressive. Was it scary to give up his corporate job, salary and stock options; of course, but he had to do it.

Since then, he’s never regretted a day and has met the most amazing people from all over world. Many continue to return year after year and become part of the Abbington Green family. I can honestly say that’s exactly how I feel.

This was our second stay at Abbington Green B&B Inn and I was so excited to return and see what new sustainable initiatives they had introduced. I was happy to hear that Nick had formulated his own line of cleaning products. What I didn’t expect to learn was that the reason was because he had developed an extreme allergy to what he had been using. His face and eyes began to swell up each time he used products with a certain type of preservative in them (specifically Polydimethylsiloxane which is found in most commercial cleaning products and many personal care products). He now uses his own personal mixture of castile

The other exciting news is the addition of a spa treatment room with 2 treatment tables. Nick converted the parlor into a spa exclusive to guests of the Inn. Guests can have individual or couples massage or choose from a wide selection of facials and skincare treatments with ZenJen products.

I had to ask Nick about all of the notes he kept and how he incorporated that into the Inn. He wanted to keep the main part of the house historic, while offering modern amenities in the rooms. What I was really interested in were the things about hotel rooms that bothered him and that he wanted to do differently – some of which I’d never even thought of until he mentioned it. Like providing two luggage racks, a charging station next to the bed (not halfway across

the room), a sound machine, a quiet air conditioner where you can control your own temperature, extra blankets, two kinds of pillows both firm and soft, a heated towel bar, soft towels, a big bath sheet and regular bath towels. Probably the most unique amenity he’s thought of is a sensor light under the sink that goes on in the bathroom so you don’t have to turn on that annoying bright light in the middle of night! Clearly – he’s thought of everything.

One of the best things about the Inn is Nick’s amazing cooking. At the nightly happy hour, you’ll enjoy a selection of local cheeses and homemade appetizers with local beer and Italian wine, but the breakfast – to die for!! As always, his menu depends on what is fresh, local, and in season. While we were there the two-course menu consisted of fresh watermelon and mint with fresh mint syrup made from their garden. The second course of deliciousness was blueberry banana pancakes with maple syrup sourced from Vermont but made in Asheville, and local sausage.

How Chiropractic and Osteopathy Fits into Your Pet’s Life

aybe you think that animals, unlike humans, use their bodies in a natural way and shouldn’t need chiropractic support. After all, they aren’t sitting at a desk all day, or playing onesided games like golf! And cats are far too slinky to ever get stiff. But the truth is, chiropractic adjustments to the spine and limb joints can be an amazing boon for achy athletes, older arthritic pets, animals that have tripped or been dropped, and puppies that need good alignment in order to reach their healthy potential. In addition, recent work by Canadian veterinarian Laura Taylor has suggested that any dog who has been neutered or spayed is out of ideal alignment for health and comfort until the post-surgical adhesions are resolved with myofascial and osteopathic work. There are so many situations in which chiropractic and osteopathy can be helpful for animals.

Puppies & Kittens Let’s go by age. Most puppies and kittens are incredibly flexible and can be resilient to lots of pouncing and bouncing and odd sleeping positions. But they are also vulnerable to getting their joints pulled out of alignment if they get stuck in an overstuffed chair or porch railing or child’s hand.

Similarly, the fall of a puppy or kitten from human hands or a table or sofa can affect skull bone alignment or vertebral alignment.

When this happens, those joints may not be able to develop normally and it is possible to see early arthritis that might have been prevented. Vertebrae out of alignment create abnormal stresses across the intervertebral disc and increase the risk of disc disease as an animal ages. Skull bones out of alignment create stress through the dura mater 18

which covers the brain and spinal cord and can increase signs of anxiety or vague unwillingness to move. Getting chiropractic or osteopathic therapy after a puppy or kitten first joins the family and again after any known traumas can make a huge difference in the long term healthy function of that pet.

Spay & Neuter Most of our pets these days are spayed or neutered between two to twelve months of age. Dr. Laura Taylor started noticing recurrent chiropractic patterns that prevented ideal athletic function - the kind of function that would affect our weekend hiking buddies as well as competitive agility and dock-diving dogs. In addition, the imbalance created in the pelvis can trigger a destabilizing pattern in the knee, which may make animals more vulnerable to cruciate injuries. When the spay and neuter adhesions are released, which can take 1-5 appointments, animals show noticeable improvements in how they move. They regain the natural connection and strength from their hind ends and move with more grace and power. As a bonus, the treatments are often very relaxing!

Emotional & Physical Stresses Some of our pets come to us as rescues who have dealt with emotional and physical stresses that we often will never fully know. Overwhelming emotional stresses are sometimes stored in the spine, in the same way that we recognize emotional releases sometimes coming from our muscles after a particularly deep massage.

Chiropractic and osteopathic care for these animals within the first 6-12 months after rescue can make a big difference in releasing such stored emotions. Such care

can also resolve movement dysfunction in the spine caused by physical traumas, and ideally help the animals avoid the development of early joint pain.

Adult Dogs & Cats Dogs and cats in their prime are often great seekers of adventure, whether it’s playing hard in a field full of holes, chasing deer through bramble and sticks, competing in the sport arena, or finding the highest and slippery places to hide and play. Often these adventures are sources of great joy and sport, but sometimes they result in a hard fall, a collision, or a slip that wrenches the body. Sometimes the animals seem to recover fairly quickly with a good full body shake, sometimes they are sore or tentative for a few days but recover, and sometimes they have difficulty recovering. In all of these situations, but particularly the latter two, chiropractic evaluation often can find and resolve abnormal tension or compression patterns that can cause pain and/or loss of function. The dogs and cats that seem to recover after a few days without treatment are often the animals who are compensating for a dysfunction that is significant enough to be setting them up for further accidents and injury down the road. This is a situation where preventive care can make a big difference in protecting the back and limbs from more significant injury down the road, which is really a much more powerful place to act than once an accident has caused significant structural damage.

Older Dogs & Cats As our pets adventure their way into old age, they can develop arthritis from gradual wear and tear and from old injuries, even after corrective surgeries. A common response

to arthritis in a limb is to redistribute forces to alternate limbs using the back and spine.

This commonly causes spinal joint compressions which over time will further compromise an animal’s ability to move well.

Other pets may have a lifetime of adventures causing progressive dysfunction and gradual onset of pain in their backs. Still others may have developed intervertebral disc disease in the neck or back. In all these situations, chiropractic care can restore spinal function and comfort, thereby helping these older animals enjoy their golden years. It is important to use appropriate gentle techniques in patients with disc disease, but when such approaches are employed they can be extremely helpful in recovery.

Fueling Your Cells with Food: A Naturopathic Perspective

ood is medicine and what we fuel our bodies with determines how our body runs. I recently became certified in the Wahls Protocol which is a diet therapy that is geared toward optimizing the health of your cells, particularly the mitochondria, or batteries, of your cells. Let’s talk about the reasons for including or eliminating certain food choices and how to implement change for lasting health benefits.

Cellular Health 101 As mentioned, we want to eat to fuel our cells, particularly our mitochondria. Mitochondria are quite literally the batteries of each of the cells in our body.

Interesting facts about these little powerhouses include: • every cell in the body contains a mitochondria with the exception of red blood cells

• one cell can have as little as one to up to over a thousand mitochondria per cell Why pay so much attention to these little guys? For starters, it is thought that the “fountain of youth” is found in the health of one’s mitochondria. When we burn out our resources, we starve these energy generators, which in turn has ill effect on our organ systems and the way we feel overall. From cardiovascular disease to mood disorders to neurological disorders, all are thought to have roots in the health of your mitochondria.

Foods to Avoid

First, we need to reduce the load we place on them. Through diet we can eliminate foods that promote inflammation, including overindulging on sugar, alcohol, highly processed foods and intolerant foods.

Beyond this, you want to consider foods that might not be serving you. By this I mean a food is causing more stress in the body than good, like sugar. There is no daily allotment of sugar I would want you to aim for in the day, therefore, eliminating added sugars is priority. Check labels on products like almond butter and dairy free milk alternatives like coconut milk as these can be hidden sources of sugars.

Name it, Claim it, Tame it: How To Take Personal Responsibility and Respond Without Blame

ust as our body and skin needs to be fed and cared for in a healthy and responsible manner, our mind and soul needs that same attention. This article deals with becoming aware of our thoughts, feelings and actions and being responsible for them (developing the ability to respond to life and others without blame or shame). There is a simple guidance often used in therapy that goes, “Name it, claim it and tame it.” It refers to being able to identify or name our challenges, emotions, weaknesses or faults; claim them or accept them as our own; and tame them by learning to live with them, overcome them or transform them.

Name the Challenge The first step is when we name the challenge. We are getting to what the Stoic philosophers call, “the thing in itself”- the core feeling or thought. You may remember the scene in the film Silence of the Lambs in which Hannibal Lecter quotes Marcus Aurelius to Clarice Starling. “For each particular thing, ask what is it in itself?

What is its nature?” He asks what does Buffalo Bill do? She responds that he kills women. He says, “No, this is incidental. What needs does he serve by killing?” When Clarice is unable to provide the answer, he explains, “He covets, it is his nature.” This is an example of first principles and simplicity or getting to the base. We may say we are angry about a situation but on further reflection we become aware that we are hurt or disappointed, therein naming the first or core feeling. When we name or identify the feeling or perhaps the object of our fear, we make it conscious. It no longer sits in our subcortical brain - the realm of fears, fight, flight or freeze.

It moves to the cortex where it can be known and processed. Then we begin the journey out of denial into acceptance.

Accept Responsibility This is why the first step in 12 Step Programs is, “I admit I was powerless over _X_ and that my life had become unmanageable.”

Once I identify (name) and accept (own) the situation, thought or feeling for what it is, I can take personal responsibility. I become aware that the condition, situation, thought or feeling has nothing to do with anyone else but me. It is my response and perspective alone. This does not mean that I am assigning guilt, blame or shame to myself or anyone else. I am simply naming the challenge, accepting my response and role in the situation and now developing or learning to mindfully respond rather than act out of denial, blame, anger or any other previously learned behavioral pattern such as avoidance.

Tame the Response Taming the automatic or unconscious response is developing the ability to respond in a non-destructive or non-violent manner.

In Jungian terms we are getting to know and explore our Shadow, our dark side. These include our destructive thoughts, feelings, behaviors, prejudices, any disowned character vulnerability and the house of our shame. To bring the light of awareness to these dark corners we use the tools which assist us in working out our emotions. This could be talking to trusted people; releasing body tension; finding expression in drawing, writing, song, movement or any meaningful art form we have an affinity for which allows us to bring the unconscious to consciousness. In doing Shadow work we must find our “things in themselves” and evaluate how they match up with our core values. This is the area in which we employ the skills we developed from becoming aware of our feelings, thoughts and behaviors and consciously choosing to act with unconditional kindness and compassion. We choose to live a meaningful life of personal value within a community. We recognize that we have deviated from our course, we immediately own our behavior, make amends and provide restitution where appropriate.

Beyond Calories and Carbs: A Broader Approach to Weight Loss

ow that summer is in full swing, it's hard to go too long without hearing a conversation about the next best diet. If you're like most patients, choosing the right diet can be confusing, overwhelming, and understandably stressful. With so many diets to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which program is best for you. While each one likely has its benefits, I often tell patients there is no single diet that is universally best for all of us. We are genetically and biochemically unique, which means the approach to weight loss should be specific to your body type, age and activity level. Understanding the different approaches to weight loss helps put into perspective the many possibilities when it comes to addressing weight loss goals.

The Caloric Deficit Equation Let's start with the basics. I joke with my patients that weight loss comes down to a very simple, yet sobering, mathematical equation. Calories are a measurement of energy and we lose weight as a result of energy expenditure; that is, "burning" calories beyond what our bodies need to sustain everyday activities. One pound of fat is the equivalent of 3,500 calories and if we divide this number by seven (for each day of the week), we need to create a deficit of 500 calories per day to lose one pound per week. I ask my patients to complete a diet diary, which not only helps me get a better understanding of their diet, but is useful in helping patients recognize "hidden" calories – calories that may be keeping them from creating a caloric deficit. We can then construct a personalized meal plan based on the appropriate caloric intake when accounting for age, gender, height, weight and activity level. It's not only how many calories we consume, but the types of calories that play a role in weight gain. As we discuss a patient’s personalized meal plan,

I make it a point to review the breakdown of macronutrients (the relative proportions of fats, carbs and fats) to optimize efficacy.

Thyroid & Metabolism: Getting the Full Picture A healthy diet is an essential part of any weight loss program, but so is a fullyfunctioning metabolism. Our metabolism is controlled by the thyroid, the gland responsible for the production of hormones that affect everything from energy levels and weight loss to supporting healthy mood and libido. The thyroid is the powerhouse of the body and when sluggish or operating at suboptimal levels, can make it more difficult to lose weight. Most primary care doctors test TSH as part of a yearly physical, which works well as a screening tool, but sometimes can miss the bigger picture. In many cases we find normal TSH levels, but the hormones produced by the thyroid gland itself, T4 and T3, are either low or low-normal. This happens when the body is under stress, whether emotional or physical, as the body converts T4 to reverse T3, instead of T3. Essentially, the body tries to save for a "rainy day," preventing the conversion to T3, which is necessary for a fully-functioning

metabolism. Testing the full panel of thyroid hormones provides a more complete picture of the state of your metabolism. Fortunately, there are herbs that help improve the conversion of T4 to T3 that can in turn promote weight loss, when necessary. Since the herbs affect hormone balance, it's important to run blood tests before supplementing and thyroid-supporting herbs should only be used under the supervision of a physician.

Herbs & Supplements: Garcinia Cambogia & 5-HTP You've probably heard this before: there is no magic pill for weight loss. There is, however, research supporting the use of one herb, Garcinia cambogia, to optimize weight loss in patients who already adhere to a healthy diet and exercise program.

While research is mixed, some studies show that regular supplementation with Garcinia as much as doubled weight loss in participants already following a diet and exercise regimen when compared to subjects taking a placebo. So how does it work? Widely used in southeast Asia, a component in Garcinia called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) binds to and inhibits an enzyme called ATPcitrate lyase, which converts carbohydrates

to fats. For patients who gain weight more easily when consuming carbohydrates, Garcinia might be a helpful addition to block the conversion of carbohydrates to fats. If carbs aren't your problem, but you seem to struggle with appetite and portion control, research supports the use of 5-HTP to mildly suppress appetite, which is regulated by hormones called ghrelin and leptin. If there's an imbalance in these hormones, you may find yourself hungrier than usual, making it difficult to adhere to any given diet. As a precursor to serotonin, 5-HTP supports healthy mood so it is also beneficial in the treatment of depression. When emotional factors and poor mood contribute to “stress eating,” 5-HTP can be especially helpful.

Exercise & Lifestyle: A Visit to a Naturopath While naturopathic doctors (NDs) are not specifically trained as personal trainers, most NDs are comfortable creating a basic exercise plan that can help address your weight loss goals. The type and timing of workouts, as well as the addition of exercises to increase heart rate, can be "game changing" when it comes to fat loss. We've already discussed the negative effects of stress on the thyroid, but stress also results in a rise in cortisol, our stress hormone, which can further inhibit weight loss. Consider yoga, mindful meditation, or any other form of stress reduction to help manage cortisol and optimize weight loss.

When elevated at night, cortisol can disrupt sleep cycles and prevent you from getting restorative sleep, which is a fundamental part of any weight loss plan.

The approach to weight loss should never be limited to diet alone; a careful look at thyroid function and metabolism along with exercise planning and the use of supplements and herbs can help you reach your goals more quickly. The approach to weight loss should be as unique as you.

The Intersection of CBD and Acupuncture

I

ran into a former patient of mine (let’s call her Jane) in the grocery store a few months ago. She had stopped regular acupuncture treatments a few years ago once we had resolved both her chronic migraines and severe abdominal cramps (a result of endometriosis). I asked her how she was doing.

“Great,” Jane said, “even though my symptoms started coming back a few months ago.”

“Well, what the heck?” I said, “why haven’t you come back in for treatment?”

“I haven’t needed to,” she announced proudly, “I’ve been using CBD oil.”

Being in the natural health field for over a decade, I’ve learned to consider any new “miracle cure” with a generous dose of skepticism. There is a huge appetite and general public longing for non-pharmaceutical relief from the day-to-day maladies that so negatively impact our quality of life. In the case of CBD, the buzz has become something of a cacophony over the past year or so. I had even experimented with it myself and had found it thoroughly underwhelming.

I asked Jane what exactly she was taking. She had been using two separate products - one topical for the endometrial pain and one internal, taken as a tincture, for sleep. Both products rang a bell - our acupuncture/herb supplier had been glowingly promoting their recent addition of these products to their offerings. Jane was thoroughly convinced - and convincing.

Even though I’ve had hundreds of patients swear that a particular product was a cureall for them, I’ve seen those same products produce zero effects in other patients. But the buzz has been so loud with CBD, I just couldn’t ignore it anymore.

I was inspired to do some more research into CBD. When I did, I was struck

by a singular fact. CBD has incredibly similar actions to acupuncture - both induce anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving processes in the human body and do so with little-to-no side effects. Acupuncture evokes these effects via the insertion of tiny, hair-thin needles into the skin. The body responds to these foreign objects in the system by generating significant antiinflammatory processes and by decreasing sympathetic nervous system activity, thus producing stress-relieving effects.

CBD achieves the same ends through different means. Researchers have determined that our body has a very complex endocannabinoid system which can regulate various anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective processes (along with other well-known systems such as the adrenergic, cholinergic and dopaminergic systems). Put simply, CBD interacts with cell receptors in this system to elicit beneficial effects in the human body. There are mountains of research being done on CBD, and all point to the same conclusion - this stuff really does work. We ordered the same products Jane was taking from our supplier and they didn’t disappoint.

The first patient we used a CBD product on was an 86-year-old woman with chronic sciatic pain. We had greatly reduced the intensity of her pain over a handful of acupuncture sessions, but the icing on the cake was when we applied a topical CBD cream during a treatment. Our patient was so overjoyed, she called her acupuncturist the next day. “This is the first time in years that I have felt no pain at all!” she proclaimed overjoyed.

Since then, we’ve used both topical CBD ointments and a line of highly refined CBD tinctures that are brilliantly combined with specific Chinese herbs to enhance their effects. The results are invariably the

Selective Mutism: Natural Approaches for Vocal Restoration

hat do you do when your patient or client appears to respond to every instruction you give them yet when you directly ask him or her a question there is no response? Do you repeat the question, assuming the individual has not heard what you said? Do you move forward with the intake and make note of the individual's demeanor? These questions without a doubt leave numerous clinicians pondering what the next course of action might be.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), selective mutism (SM) is a disorder in which individuals fail to speak in some social settings, despite speaking normally in other settings. SM can significantly interfere with the individual's ability to complete normal daily activities. There has been much debate regarding SM and its formal classification. Most recently it has been reclassified from “disorders of childhood and adolescence” to “anxiety disorder.” It is no longer viewed as behavior (oppositional defiance or avoidant behavior) and may coexist with social and developmental disorders, neurocognitive deficits and even auditory processing disorders.

Girls are twice as likely to exhibit SM compared to boys. Current conventional treatment for SM includes 2 main therapies: cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy, primarily selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Possible Causes of Selective Mutism Traumatic Events: One of the first things that should be determined is whether a traumatic event has occurred.

The trauma need not be physical or sexual.

Emotional and verbal abuse can trigger anxiety and therefore influence the development of SM.

Lead Toxicity: Lead is a heavy metal known to cause cognitive and neurological issues in children. It crosses the bloodbrain barrier, interferes with production and release of brain chemistry molecules (aka neurotransmitters) and neurotransmission, and decreases neuronal growth.

Iron Status: Iron is a cofactor for serotonin production. It is absorbed much more efficiently from meat products than from plant-based products. Vitamin C can enhance iron absorption. Never attempt to force the individual outside of his or her comfort zone; always meet the individual where they are at and ensure a judgment-free safe space. Softer Skin Than You’ve Had in Years

Does Your Skin Resemble a Plum Or a Prune?

ou’re asleep; and you’re having a nightmare. You walk to your bathroom mirror; you look up and you see your face 25 years older than it really is. It’s wrinkled, old and sagging. You think; how did this happen? What could have I done to prevent this? You panic and POOF…thankfully, it was just a nightmare.

Then it makes you think; what will my face look like in 25 years? Well, let’s talk reality and examine the plum and the prune dilemma to illustrate. Let's start with a very simple question. How does a plum go from looking plump, healthy and vibrant to a lifeless, crinkled prune? Now, most people will say it's because, "the plum has been dried out." But if that were the only reason then why can't you turn a prune BACK into a plum by simply soaking it in water? Sure, after a day or two, the prune may become a little softer, a little soggier but you'll never fool someone into thinking it's a plum again. As your body dries out with age, your skin starts to look hollow and limp, which visibly alters the shape and structure of your entire face. Your skin naturally loses volume over time.

Three Perspectives on Financial Independence

n a recent bright Sunday afternoon, five women and I enjoyed wine, cheese, coffee, and amazing conversation. Normally you don’t think of “coffee” with wine and cheese. What was also unconventional was what we were talking about: dreams, fears, and finances.

What led up to that inspiring discussion? An enthusiastic reader of my professional eNewsletter, “Coffee Breaks with Caroline” invited four of her friends to her home, and over different foods and beverages that helped everyone feel as comfortable as possible, we talked about questions they had with strategies that all women should consider when it comes to their personal finances. The whole experience was quite moving for me, as it is every time. I have noticed some powerful similarities across the, “Coffee Breaks with Caroline” that I have been privileged to offer.

First, I often am friends only with the host before I venture into her living room or kitchen, toting coffee to share. Second, though all the women who attend each session are very accomplished in life, they have different degrees of confidence with the decisions they are making with their finances.

Thirdly, and perhaps most profoundly, all of the women I’ve met have a cautious curiosity and a sincere openness to reflecting on their financial situations and both listening to perspectives from me and sharing when it works for them.

As I reflect on these meaningful “Coffee Breaks with Caroline,” I encourage you to take a moment and consider your own financial situation just like these courageous women. In this month where we celebrate our nation’s independence ask yourself: “What does financial independence look like for me?” Regardless of where you might be in this moment on your own journey to financial independence, here are three perspectives that I, as a Certified Financial PlannerTM, offer you:

1. You are more than your financial net worth. Your financial net worth is a snapshot at a point in time. It reflects what you own and what you owe today.

It does not define you; it is an indicator. Consider it an input to your overall financial health that reflects decisions you have made and circumstances both within and outside of your control over time. Just as with any metric, you can use this measure as a source of information and, as a result of reflecting on this information, determine what’s in your control and make changes to positively influence your financial future.

2. You can positively influence your financial future. Regardless of how you have used money in the past, you can set yourself up for success with your financial future by spending less than you earn, maintaining emergency savings, and investing some amount of your savings in tax-deferred retirement accounts as well as taxable brokerage accounts. It may not be possible to do all of this today, but it is possible to do.

It becomes possible moment by moment, day by day, with every decision you make each time any money comes into your control.

3. Life happens. As I tell my own clients: “Life does not happen according to plan”. Think of your financial plan as your prioritized list of what you need, want, and wish to spend your money on both now and in the future. When things are tough, having a plan makes it easier to focus on what you need to take care of financially. When you’re introducing new savings behaviors or spending less, you’re able to stay motivated when you have an inspiring vision for yourself around what you want and why you’re changing behaviors. Key here is to realize that since life will present surprises no matter what, it’s critical to retain

focus on your financial priorities in life, most importantly savings and investing strategies that will set you up for success over time.

Wherever you might be right now on your path to financial independence, know that you have options. As my father-in-law once told me, “Life is a series of priority calls.” And when it comes to how you spend your money, you can prioritize *you* by choosing with care and intention how you save, spend, and invest your finances.

Naturopathic Travel Tips for Summer

ummer is here and we are looking forward to our long awaited vacations. From international travel to a road trip to see Grandma, none of us wants to have a trip ruined by stress, sickness, injury or bad sunburn. Having spent years traveling back and forth across the country and hearing patient concerns about travel, I have gathered some helpful hints and travel essentials that are simple and can help ensure some uninterrupted R and R. Travel Anxiety How many people have you heard say, “I need a vacation from my vacation!” Travel is stressful and anxiety provoking. A few easy steps can minimize these feelings of overwhelm.

1. Eat light: Don’t eat heavy rich foods before a long car ride or getting on a plane. Packing healthy snacks will deter you from grabbing unhealthy food in an airport or highway rest stop.

2. Stay hydrated: Making a homemade electrolyte drink of fresh ginger, lemon, honey and sea salt in water can help keep you from being dehydrated on a long flight or car trip. It is a great recovery drink for an unexpected bout of diarrhea.

3. CBD oil: Topical creams and oral preparations of CBD can be calming. It can be helpful to calm your nerves before a big flight. CBD should be used with caution and if you are taking other prescription sedatives consult your physician.

4. Homeopathy: Homeopathic remedies are inexpensive, safe, and easy to pack. They take up little room in your suitcase and can help with a multitude of symptoms. See my quick reference list at the end of the article.

5. Give yourself something to look forward to: That book you’ve been wanting to read, your favorite guilty pleasure magazine, a movie you’ve wanted to see. Prepare something you are excited about to occupy your mind while you are waiting for take off or in the car for a few hours.

Sleep Once you have addressed the travel anxiety that may keep you awake, sleeping in a different bed can add a whole new set of problems. You can never completely avoid that hotel room next to a freeway or a noisy neighbor. And for city dwellers, the drone of the crickets can be just as distracting as it is peaceful.

1. White noise apps: There are several white noise apps that can be downloaded on your phone. Plain white noise, nature sounds, and calming music can help drown out disturbing noise. If you do use your cell phone at night, make sure you 34

place it a few feet away from your head while you sleep to avoid EMF exposure.

2. Essential oils: Lavender essential oil can be very calming. A few drops in a bathtub or a few drops on a pillow can be enough to help you get some valuable sleep.

3. Tea: Tea bags don’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase and can have incredible medicinal benefits. There are several Sleep and Calm formulas available at your local health food store.

Look for ingredients like Lavender, Passion Flower, Lemon Balm and Chamomile. Try a few before your trip so you know what one works the best for you.

Gut Health Many patients report constipation or changes in bowel habits when traveling. These hints may help you avoid sickness and help you recover from an unhappy bowel.

1. Probiotics: If you don’t already take one, START NOW! A good quality probiotic will have a bacteria count of at least 10 billion and several different strains of bacteria.

2. Homeopathics: Homeopathy really shines with gastrointestinal issues. I have included some remedies in my list at the end of this article.

3. Activated charcoal: Charcoal has long been used in water filtration systems. Small portable travel filters are now available for water bottles. Additionally, activated charcoal can be ingested in capsule form to help your body absorb and eliminate toxins.

If you are traveling somewhere with a questionable water supply, activated charcoal is a must.

Sun and Bug Protection 1. Sunblock: Unfortunately recent research is showing that the chemicals contained in SPF products may in fact be worse than that sun itself. Using a mineral based sunblock is essential to avoid exposure to these chemicals. Be mindful that mineral based sunblocks require more frequent application so don’t forget to reapply often. Look for sunblock containing zinc oxide and healthy moisturizers like coconut oil or jojoba oil. Chemicals to avoid include oxybenzone (a known endocrine disruptor), homosalate, parabens, retinyl palmitate and oxtocytene. If you see these on the label, take it out of your Amazon cart!

2. Bug repellent: There are better ways to keep bugs from making our campfire miserable. Mosquitos and ticks are a primary concern in many parts of the country, especially with the rise in

cases of Lyme Disease. Lemon Eucalyptus oil in 30% solution has been shown to be as effective against ticks as a 1015% solution of DEET. Other essential oils such as cedarwood, lavender and citronella are great bug repellants both topically and diffused in the air.

First Aid 1. Arnica cream: This is a must when traveling with children for bumps and bruises or pain. Whether it is a twisted ankle or a bump on the head, arnica will help with healing and pain and can be applied as often as needed.

2. Essential oils: Lavender is one of my favorite oils. Little known uses for lavender are as an antiseptic and a styptic. Lavender essential oil can be applied directly to a cut or scrape and will help stop bleeding and help to prevent infection. It does not generally burn when applied.

Homeopathy There are thousands of homeopathic remedies but here are a few to consider when packing for your trip. Because homeopathy is not a one size fits all medicine, I recommend consulting a licensed naturopathic doctor before your trip to ensure you have the correct remedies for you and your family and understand how to dose them properly.

Aconitum Napellis: Aconite can be useful for panic and anxiety related to travel, particularly fearful thoughts or fear of dying.

Argentum Nitricum: One of the stars for travel anxiety, can be helpful for thoughts of claustrophobia on a plane, fear of crowds and heights and that individual that needs to walk and move around to feel better.

Arsenicum Album: Generalized anxiety and anxiety about health concerns can be an indication for Arsenicum. Additionally, Arsenicum is a great remedy for stomach upset and burning and vomiting that may be a result of food poisoning. Travelers Diarrhea sometimes known as “Montezuma’s revenge” is another indication for Arsenicum.

You Can’t Get Any Greener than the Lovely Saranac Lake Inn

aranac Lake, nestled in the Adirondack Mountains in far upstate New York, started drawing people in the late 19th century. Interestingly enough, this town is known as a “healing” town as many visitors were looking for more than just a travel escape. They had tuberculosis, and in the days before antibiotics, the standard treatment was the "fresh air cure," or sitting outside in the clean mountain air for extended periods in the hopes of recovering. On my first visit there, I could definitely see why - it is an absolutely stunning part of the country.

I was excited to stay at the beautiful and peaceful Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Inn. While there are many ecofriendly lodging choices in the US, what owner Daniel Brownell has done with this property is truly amazing. Established in 1923, Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn was a fixture of Saranac Lake, and one of the first lodging properties in the Village. Job Requirements: 1. You will incarnate into a physical body that is going to need a lot of help at the beginning and at the end, but in the middle you will get to choose how you maintain your physical body.

2. You will be part of a global mind that fills you with fear and anxiety and you will spend your lifetime figuring out that this global mind was just an illusion.

3. You will choose which emotional patterns or karmic lessons that you want to heal from in this lifetime as a Human Being.

4. You will choose your parents from your Soul family and ask them to raise you with enough chaos to ensure that you are deeply entrenched in your emotional patterns.

5. You will spend your entire life listening to the opinions of others on how to heal your life until you realize that your Soul had the answers the entire time.

6. You will jump on your spiritual path to learn how to connect to Spirit, you will study with masters, seek out guidance and have the potential to get lost in their enlightened views.

7. You will realize that your Soul has been in charge of your entire life and decide that you should listen to your Soul first and other experts second.

8. You will learn the language of your Soul and learn to distinguish between what your Soul is guiding you to do versus what others are requiring you to do.

9. You will live the peaceful existence of a Soul Being having a Human Being Experience, confident that your Soul has been guiding you on your journey to learn whatever is required in this lifetime.

10. You will engage in personal and professional relationships that feed your Soul and nourish your human experience.

11. You will live squarely in the present moment without regret of the past and fear of the future.

12. You will activate your Divine Rights to a life of love, joy, peace and abundance.

#1: 40% spiritual nature, 60% human nature. You spend too much time in the chaos of human existence versus the bliss of Soul existence. #2: 60% spiritual nature, 40% human nature. You live a consistent Soul experience; however, you still allow other human beings to throw you out of alignment. #3: 80% spiritual nature, 20% human nature. You live your existence in co-creation with your Soul energy.

When you react as a Human Being, there is a deep awareness of what you are doing from the Soul level and you self-correct.

If you are wondering if you can move beyond 80% spiritual nature, the answer is no. You still need your human nature to challenge your Soul to grow. When you no longer need your human nature, it will be time to retire this incarnation and return home to rest until your next assignment.
