hen is the last time you laughed so hard you cried? Can you remember? If you can’t or it seems like a long time ago, it might be time for some serious laughter therapy. And if you think that’s silly, think again. Dr. Lee Berk and fellow researcher Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University in California have been studying the effects of laughter on the immune system. To date their published studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, and disease-fighting proteins, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.

So, the evidence is there that laughter is very good for our health and wellbeing. Why don’t we do it more often? Part of the reason is we’re adults now and we think we need to be serious. We have responsibilities, careers, families and laundry lists of things we need to do each day. Who has time for fun and games?

Let me tell you – if you don’t make time for it, you will burn out quicker than the blink of an eye. In fact, I often wonder if one of the reasons we age is because we stop having fun.

As a life coach, one of my favorite things to coach my clients on is learning how to have fun again. We do passion lists, bucket lists, life reviews and guided meditations to bring out your inner child and find ways to laugh every day.

It can be as simple as watching a funny movie, reading a humorous book, going to a comedy show or spending time with someone who always makes you laugh.

Whatever you choose to do, finding time to laugh and have fun on a daily basis is a necessity for optimal health and well-being.

OM Street: Yoga on LaSalle Road Saturday, July 22, 2017

est Hartford Yoga (WHY) is pleased to announce OM Street: Yoga on LaSalle Road – a free yoga event that has drawn over 2000 yogis in previous years.

Our 7th annual free outdoor yoga class will take over a full city block in West Hartford Center on Saturday, July 22nd from 8:00 am until 9:15 am. The all-levels class will be led by local yogi Barbara Ruzansky, with the assistance of instructors from area yoga studios and a live-drumming and soundscape accompaniment by Cosmic Hue. After class, the participants may enjoy coffee, tea, shopping with local merchants, and browsing the West Hartford Farmers’ Market (9 am – 1 pm). The event is a boon to local businesses in West Hartford Center, bringing hundreds of participants and onlookers to the center, primed for post-yoga refreshments, breakfast, snacks and new active wear. Parking is available in municipal lots, which will all be open before 8:00 am. Bring a yoga mat and water.

We are presently inviting local yoga and fitness studio partners to promote and assist at the event, and are seeking retail and professional sponsors to help support and promote Om Street.

hreading is an all-natural process of hair removal that originated in Southeast Asia. Just a piece of cotton thread is used, creating a knot to remove facial hair. Threading lasts a lot longer, since the hair is being plucked from the roots. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Get Your Asana in the Street Om Street on July 22nd

One of the things that makes OM Street unique is the collaborative involvement of yoga studios throughout Connecticut. Barbara and her WHY staff have made concerted efforts to invite and include as many area studios as wish to participate, resulting in upwards of 50 studio owners making the trek to West Hartford. Jen Leavitt, former studio manager of WHY, participated behind the scenes for four years and is still the director of the annual OM Street event.

ommunity is a sense of belonging that springs from feeling as if other people accept you as you are. Combine that with a collective sense of peace, joy, and unity and you can imagine what it’s like to practice yoga outside on LaSalle Road in West Hartford at an annual event called OM Street.

OM Street began in 2011 as a collaboration between Lululemon and West Hartford Yoga (WHY). It was a simple premise… gather people from surrounding towns for a free outdoor yoga class. Barbara Ruzansky, owner of West Hartford Yoga and OM Street’s class leader, had high expectations and imagined that the event would draw a crowd of 500. Not only were her expectations met, but a new tradition had blossomed. The second year of yoga on LaSalle, dubbed OM Street and paired with the quippy tagline, “Get your asana in the street!”, brought several hundred more yogis, a better sound system (expertly run by one of WHY’s instructors, Jude Russell), and live music from a local band, Cosmic Hue. Excitement had grown over the yoga-in-the-street event and first-year participants brought friends and family to share in the enthusiasm of the 75-minute flow.

Over the next few years, OM Street seemed to be blessed by the weather gods. Although occasionally a little humid, the class always seemed to be canopied by blue skies and fluffy clouds. The great weather and the wonderful enthusiasm of our Connecticut yogis have grown OM Street to over 2,000 participants. To accommodate so many folks, Ms. Ruzansky is supported by dozens of well-trained teachers representing each of the different participating studios. With their expert assistance, help is never far away should you need it. No experience needed to be part of the fun… both beginners and experienced yogis can stretch and flow to their comfort level and bask in the energy of togetherness.

Another benefit of OM Street is how it not only brings exposure to yoga studios throughout Connecticut, but also to local businesses.

Shopkeepers open their doors and welcome people in while various small business owners selling health and wellness products are on hand to greet the energized crowd. As one shop owner on LaSalle put it, “the good energy created by all those people doing yoga together has travelled and spread.”

Now coming into its 7th year, OM Street has organically grown from a whimsical outdoor class to a unification of yoga studios, local businesses, musicians, community participants, and even a non-profit organization. With such a dynamic and diverse group of people coming together and celebrating their individuality by flowing in unison, it’s only natural that such a broad celebration would attract an organization whose mission includes bringing yoga to underserved populations. WHY Outreach, the nonprofit branch of West Hartford Yoga, has brought its own energy to LaSalle since 2015. Anyone stopping by the WHY Outreach table either before or after the event can pick up a list of the free classes they offer, including Yoga for Cancer and Yoga for Recovery.

This year, OM Street will take place on Saturday, July 22 from 8:00am - 9:15am (with a rain date of Saturday, August 12). If you’re ready to bend, sweat, stretch, and smile on LaSalle Road, grab a mat, a towel, and some water and, “get your asana in the street!”

Business Spotlight Jessica Pizano, Owner of Fit to You, LLC

T

his business spotlight is our fifth in a series recognizing local holistic practitioners and businesses that are celebrating 10 years in 2017. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jessica Pizano of Fit to You to discuss her inspiration and success.

DH: Why did you want to start your own business vs working for someone else?

JP: For me it was a matter of creating the proper environment for my clients. I had always worked out of other people's offices including a personal training studio and a naturopathic office. I wanted to create an office space that was calming and private enough to be conducive to working with chronic health challenges. Since I specialize in mast cell disorders, connective tissue diseases, dysautonomia and autoimmune disease, many of my clients are very sensitive to smells and other environmental triggers. Having an office cleaned with green cleaning products, absent of perfumes and other scents, and even flowers can make the difference on whether or not a client can enter an office. So, I do my best to make my office safe for as many people as possible.

DH: What has been your biggest success and your biggest challenge in owning a business for 10 years?

JP: The early years were the most challenging. There were times when I was worried that I wouldn't be able to continue in my own business because I wouldn't have enough income.

I taught for a while to help subsidize my income. While I enjoyed teaching, it was a great day when I could dedicate myself fully to my practice.

In terms of my greatest success, I think it is that I have been blessed to help figure out as many difficult cases as I have. I have had my own health challenges and being able to guide others who have had a similar experience is very gratifying.

DH: What plans do you have for the future?

JP: This summer actually marks a very exciting chapter for my practice. I am actually moving to the Richmond, Virginia area where I will be merging my practice with my colleague Christy Williamson. We already own Zebra Diagnostics, LLC, a nutritional genomics research company and SNPed, a webinar series on nutritional genomics for practitioners together.

DH: What are you most proud of that you've accomplished in the last 10 years?

JP: I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to help so many people find their health. There is nothing better than seeing someone who is terribly sick recover enough to regain their energy, their ability to participate fully in life, and an understanding of how to maintain this newfound health.

Think Like a Vegetarian

I

have a love/hate relationship with meat. I love how it keeps me satisfied and sustains my husband, a competitive cyclist. To be honest, it has just been easier to eat animal protein because I grew up with it and was used to centering my meals around it.

But the more I learn about current industrial animal farming in our society, the more concerned I become. I lament its effects on the environment and water supply, its lack of sustainability, and the cruel and unhealthful way our industrialized meat is raised and harvested. I’m even concerned about the potential cancer risk of the regular consumption of animal products.

So why continue to eat meat, you ask? Good question. My answer is not simple, just like I believe it is for so many other people. It is my conviction that certain individuals do better on a diet consisting of at least some animal protein, while others fare better with all plant-based foods. On a personal level, my weight, energy level, gut symptoms, and food satisfaction are better when animal protein is in my diet. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t think through my consumption of meat very carefully.

For one, I opt for 100% grass fed or organic. Second, I minimize the amount of animal protein I eat by treating it more like a garnish than the focus of the meal. I mix in loads of vegetables with every meat dish. My soups and stews are mostly veggies and I add large amounts of grated vegetables to taco meat and meatballs. Third, I eat several all-vegetarian meals per week.

In short I have had to train myself to think like a vegetarian even though I still cook with meat. One of the best tools I found to help me change my thinking was to join a farm where I receive a weekly share of local organic produce during the growing season.

Now, instead of centering my meals around meat, I start with the veggies from the farm and go from there. I highly recommend this strategy for not only decreasing the amount of animal protein you eat, but also to maximize the amount of vegetables in your diet, a move that I am absolutely confident will improve your health and help you lose weight. Here is one of my family’s favorite veggiecentric meat dishes.

Thai Veggie Cabbage Wraps with Chicken Serves 6 Ingredients: • 2 teaspoons extra virgin coconut oil • 1 pound organic ground chicken • 2 tablespoons grated ginger • 2 tablespoons minced garlic • 1 large onion, minced • 2 cups grated carrots, (about 3 med/large) • 2 cups grated zucchini, (about 2 medium) • 1 8 ounce can water chestnuts, drained and chopped into small pieces • 2 large Portobello mushroom caps, stems removed, chopped into small pieces • 1 bunch green onions, (about 6) thinly sliced • 3 tablespoons organic low sodium Tamari soy sauce • 2 1/2 tablespoons Red Boat Brand Fish Sauce • 1 teaspoon organic toasted sesame oil • 1/3 cup minced fresh cilantro • 1 small purple cabbage • 1/4 organic red bell pepper, very thinly sliced • 1/3 cup chopped no sugar added roasted peanuts • For Sauce: • 3 tablespoons Organic Balsamic vinegar • 3 tablespoons Organic low sodium Tamari soy sauce • 3/4 teaspoon fresh lime juice • 1 teaspoon coconut sugar • 1/4 teaspoon chile garlic sauce, or chile flakes 1. Prep all vegetables: Keep green onions and cilantro separate, but place prepped onion, carrots, zucchini, Portobello, and water chestnuts in one bowl.

2. Heat coconut oil in a 12” skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add ground chicken and cook, stirring frequently and breaking meat up with a spatula until browned and cooked through. Add grated ginger and garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add prepped vegetables. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender and any water they have given off has cooked off. Stir in green onions and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Stir in soy sauce and fish sauce.

Cook, stirring well, until mixture is heated through and most of the liquid has evaporated (about 2-3 minutes more). Remove from heat and stir in cilantro and sesame oil.

3. Meanwhile, mix sauce: Place 3 tablespoons soy sauce and 3 tablespoons organic Balsamic vinegar in a small glass jar or bowl. Stir in coconut sugar, lime juice and chile garlic sauce.

4. To make cabbage wraps: If using a large cabbage cut it in half. If using a small cabbage, cut about 1/2” off stem end. Carefully remove leaves, trying not to tear them. If you find it difficult, place the cabbage in the microwave on high power for 1 minute and the leaves will come off a little easier. Place about 1/4 cup veggie mixture into each cabbage leaf. Drizzle very lightly with sauce (it is potent). Top with very thinly sliced red pepper, cilantro leaves and peanuts. Serve immediately.

Paleo Banana Bread

or many of us, the idea of reducing grain in our diet is not very exciting… what will we nosh on? There is something very nourishing about eating something spongy and soft and warm! The following recipe is one that I have ‘worked on’ for the last year. After MANY revisions, this recipe is pretty close to perfect—it definitely fills a void for me and my family!!!

Paleo Banana Bread Ingredients: • 1/2 cup cassava flour • 1/3 cup tapioca starch • 1/3 cup potato starch • 1/2 cup flax meal (preferably freshly made) • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 eggs, beaten • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1/4 cup unsweetened milk substitute (coconut milk, hemp milk, etc.)

• 2/3 cup pure maple syrup or raw honey • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 ripe bananas, mashed • Optional: 1/3 cup dairy-free/sugar-free chocolate chips (Lilly’s is a great brand!)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Grease bread pan.

3. Combine all dry ingredients in mixer (except chocolate chips) and mix on low to combine.

4. Combine all wet ingredients in separate bowl and mix well.

5. Pour wet mixture into dry mixture in electric mixer while mixer is on low. Once loosely combined, turn mixer onto medium and mix well for 1 minute (do not over mix!).

6. Pour combined mixture into bread pan.

7. Optional: Pour chocolate chips into mixture in bread pan and use spoon to loosely mix chips into batter in pan.

8. Bake in oven for 1 hour or longer—use fork test to make sure banana bread is ready before removing from oven—often may take up to 1 hour and 20 minutes.

9. When ready to remove from oven, leave on counter until cool—then remove from bread pan onto cooling rack.

10. Keep bread in fridge; can enjoy hot or cold— use serrated knife to cut bread. Enjoy!!

With such amazing hospitality and experience at the helm of The Farmhouse, we couldn’t wait to taste the food! We were excited to hear that the fish and seafood is delivered fresh daily at 4pm. And you could certainly tell when you try it! To start we shared the Polpo with crispy marble potato, charred shishito peppers, young tomatoes, and cilantro calamansi glaze – this is the place to go for octopus – it was melt in your mouth delicious. For our entrees, we had the Branzino– out of this world tender, moist and in a lovely lemon butter sauce with crispy Brussels sprouts and tender baby carrots; and the Cajun Spiced Tuna with black beans, mango, jicama in a nice cilantro-lime vinaigrette…both were outstanding. For dessert, we shared a Strawberry-Rhubarb crisp which had a great contrast of sweet/sour with a crunchy crisp on top.

In addition to the great culinary experience, we were excited to see that the Farmhouse was hosting its first exhibition of art since opening in December. “Art with a Heart: Sharing is Caring,” the latest collection curated by Newtown resident Rosemary Rau, features paintings by Jeanne Eleck, Adele Moros, and Roberta Shea, and photographs by Bill Glass. The exhibition opened on May 9th. Partial proceeds from the sale of each artwork, as well as donations from Farmhouse customers, will benefit FAITH Food Pantry and the Salvation Army Food Pantry at Newtown Social Services.

The Farmhouse Restaurant is a place you won’t want to miss and well worth the drive from anywhere in Connecticut. Slow Down the Aging Process with Cosmetic Acupuncture

How to Improve Your Marathon Time Safely

et’s face it, running has become a growing community over the past 10 years. New ways to get individuals up and active is key to why this sport is now so popular. For some people, running is an occasional activity that is completed to incorporate cardiovascular health into their lives; but for others running is much more than that, it’s a way of life. Being a marathoner is a strange addiction. The love of fatiguing your body to push yourself to new limits is what many enjoy about the “runner’s high” they receive when completing a race. So why is it so tough to break the barrier of speed? Why is it that your body reaches a peak race time that seems impossible to improve? The answer…lack of crosstraining.

Seems pretty simple to some who already incorporate this into weekly schedules but for many runners, cross-training doesn’t exist. Runners can sometimes be confused by the misconception that if they are a marathoner, they should only run (usually 5-7x a week) in order to be better at running. We will address the importance of building endurance, but the secret to improving speed is incorporating a cross-training workout which target the accessory muscles in your lower body.

What are the primary muscles in running?

The larger muscles for running include the quadricep muscles, calf muscles, hamstring muscles and gluteal muscles. All of these combined help runners propel and power themselves towards the finish line. Without the proper function of one muscle group, your lower body misses out on functioning properly as a whole. Strong gluteal muscles for example aid in a faster running time overall.

What are accessory (assisting) running muscles?

Muscles such as the IT band (along the side of the outside thigh), adductors (muscles that move the leg inwards), and abductors (muscles that move the leg out to the side). These smaller muscle groups play a large role in assisting primary muscle groups with the repetitive motion of moving a runner forward quickly.

These are the necessary muscle groups that benefit from crosstraining.

What is endurance?

Endurance is an important tool needed to be built up for runners during training (especially marathoners) for a few reasons. To put it simply, when new potential marathon runners first begin to train longer distances, endurance is necessary to assist with fatigue and breathing. A new runner is more likely to become fatigued after longer training runs (compared to a multi-marathoner who 20

already has proper endurance for running). The runners heart rate is increased significantly because they are simply not used to completing a distance this length. But once the runner is persistent and continues to work up to the higher mileage, their heart rate over time will decrease and stay lower than someone running long distance for the first time. This is what we refer to as endurance in an athlete. Endurance comes with practice and many know that, “practice makes perfect”. But just because a runner has endurance doesn’t mean a PR race will happen every time.

How to gain speed in racing?

Many still believe that training runs 6 days a week will be the key to speed. Endurance yes, speed no. On average, even if you are training for a marathon, 3 to 4 days a week should be reserved for running time. Speed runs for 1 to 2 miles of a training run once a week is sufficient enough to fatigue the muscles and improve them. Cross-training with strength workouts are necessary to see results for speed. Once you begin to build up core, glutes, and accessory muscle strength, you will have a stronger momentum of the primary running muscles which in turn will improve overall running time.

It seems simple, but yet isn’t addressed enough. Many marathon coaches, personal trainers or doctors of all kinds do not educate runners on the benefits of adding strength into a weekly routine. Full functional body workouts that consist of body weight, kettle bells, and resistance bands are all perfect tools to set any runner up for speedy success.

Why We All Need The Feminine and The Masculine

omen do not come from Venus, or Men from Mars. That common, alienated perspective makes us feel like aliens to each other! No wonder our most loving relationships are often overwhelmed with strife. Intimate relationships encompass our sexual gender as men and women, but also at play are the larger archetypes of feminine and masculine. The complex interaction of these four isn’t easily grasped. For example, women might prefer men as their intimate partners, and vice versa. Why? Because of the obviousness of our biological genders, intended to join in procreation. However, sometimes women most recognize the dynamic of feminine-masculine energies in partnership with other women, and men with other men. Why? Because in their relationships, feminine and masculine characteristics speak most convincingly independent of gender.

This is where Taoist and Tantric principles, like yin-yang polarity, clarify how to relate harmoniously. Yin-yang polarities like dark-light, yielding-firm, and compassionate-courageous arise in great subtlety. They don’t simply cross-correlate. Both women and men enjoy both feminine and masculine qualities. When women limit expression of their positive masculine qualities, and men their feminine, imbalance is created. We often highly limit our love for each other and joy in life. The point is that the universe functions holistically as complementary patterns, like those we find in nature. Nature operates rhythmically, with movement, variation, and regularity.

How does this bear on human relationships? When we feel an essential complementarity with a partner, we will pull (yoke) together in some form of integration and common purpose. But the key to pulling together is to each take responsibility for our own integration—in other words, being intimate with ourselves.

The alternative is to not really know ourselves and want someone else to do the job in some kind of relative enmeshment. When we are first committed to personal integration, we will then be able to also support a partner in that work, and together feel like we are evolving toward universal truths.

The Tantric Path and the Taoist Way refer to the way reality as a whole operates. Also to nature’s universal order and organic patterning, as well as the process of life and how to live it well.

Living in harmony with the Way means being guided by its principles. These include wholeness, the integration of polarities in 22

complementarity, as well as effortless action and natural power, as opposed to controlling behavior. Our commitment to integration will translate into intimate, intensified, and resonating human relationships.

Gender harmony is the consummate possibility of togetherness for couples, but its capabilities transcend them as individuals.

Integration helps to heal divisions within, between, and beyond themselves. It models how to re-envision all seemingly discordant opposites as supportive complements. This is not simply another idealization of unity as erasing all differences and diversity. Harmony is a dynamic way to keep a balanced integration of polarities—for example, the love and strife found in all relationships.

No woman or man is separate, or “un-whole”—as if waiting for someone else to complete themselves, which is a popular misconception. The universe is fundamentally relational and organic in that every level forms an integral element of a “deep ecology”— for example, a whole leaf, whole tree, whole forest, whole planet, whole universe. Or a whole person, whole relationship, whole tribe, whole purpose to humanity. In resolving their notions of internal divisions and separateness as individuals, what embraces and envelopes a couple is wholeness, renewing itself in the play of their togetherness and belonging.

Taoism and Tantra harness the intensity of partnerships to help us appreciate the fundamental inter-relatedness of all life.

Gender relationships that emphasize integration tend to evoke the full scope of our cultural, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. Here, conventional notions of romantic love and sensual satisfaction take a back seat to greater enrichment.

We evolve into a deep appreciation and profound enjoyment of live lived holistically. That is what truly makes for a fulfilling yogic relationship heightened by universal value, respect, and love.

In fact, the emphasis in gender harmony is neither for nor against eroticism, but rather on the experience of complementarity itself, as it affects us as individuals. Rather than being constrained to a narrow focus on sensuality, we become enthralled with the larger scope of perception, which increases in breadth, depth, subtlety, and clarity—operating through sensation, emotion, imagination, and in-depth awareness. Increasingly, the totality of us as individuals is brought out. We become more actualized, individu-

ated, and true to ourselves—which simply describe how we feel when we are aware of wholeness imprinting us. It always is, but we aren’t always aware of it.

That holistic presence-awareness releases us from our “thing-related” concerns, and opens us up to an appreciation of the whole of Being in its self-consistency across differences. Our separateness and struggle resolve, as does our exile from wholeness. What will you do for another, and what will they do for you? By extending our personal feelings of bonding and belonging to embrace universal themes, we invite the whole to re-create itself through each other. Out of profound love and encouragement, we nurture each other’s evolution and travel “home” together.

Struggling with Weight Loss Resistance?

ne of the most common patient concerns voiced in the office is, “I want to lose weight.” Most patients have already tried a combination of various medications, crash diets, surgeries and exercise regimens with limited, if any, success. Success rates are so low because there are many complex pathways and chemical messengers mediating the body’s ability to optimize metabolic processes and body composition.

The majority of weight loss resistance is centered in the regulation of hormones. The calorie-in/calorie-out theory has been widely disproven, yet remains a dominant misconception regarding diet and weight loss. Calories do matter, but the updated research supports the concept that hormones matter more. The majority of patients struggling with weight have an underlying hormone imbalance.

Some of the primary hormonal contributors are described below. While these contributors can all act individually, the body is interconnected. It is likely that if one hormonal imbalance exists, there are other discrepancies as well.

Insulin Insulin is a fat-storage hormone. Insulin resistance means the cells cannot absorb the blood glucose the body generates from food. Therefore, the liver converts this excess glucose into fat. Insulin resistance can often lead to weight gain and even contribute to sugar addiction.

Leptin Leptin is known as “nature’s appetite suppressant.” However, individuals who are overweight produce excess leptin. When the brain is flooded with leptin signals, the receptors stop functioning.

This means the body stops getting the “full” indicator. The loss of these signals contributes to eating unhealthy foods in a detrimental pattern and continued weight gain.

Estrogens Estrogen dominance occurs when there is too much estrogen compared with its counter-hormone, progesterone. Having too much estrogen in the body causes a number of symptoms, including weight loss resistance, moodiness, PMS, and heavy menses.

Thyroid Hormones The thyroid is generally accepted as the “gas pedal” of metabolism, adjusting how fast or slow we burn calories. When the thyroid is sluggish, weight gain, fluid retention, hair changes, depression, constipation, and other symptoms can occur.

Cortisol (HPA axis) Predominantly known as the “stress” hormone, cortisol is secreted from our adrenal glands. In the short term, cortisol secretion can strengthen our cellular response and promote survival.

However, chronically taxing this system can shorten the lifespan.

Cortisol is well known for depositing fat around the midsection.

Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis This is a complex set of direct influences and feedback interactions among three endocrine glands: the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands. This combination is often the root cause of metabolic and weight loss resistance. Therefore, the key to weight reduction is to reset this axis, starting with cortisol.

Cortisol is one of the main hormones that disrupts the function of other hormones. Elevated cortisol suppresses the reproductive hormone progesterone, contributing to estrogen dominance. Cortisol dysfunction also triggers the hypothalamus, a small regulator in the brain, to decrease its activity, reducing metabolic rate, leading to suppression of the thyroid gland.

Optimizing Hormones and Balancing Cortisol Losing unwanted weight and keeping it off requires a variety of deliberate life adjustments. Quick fixes and “miracle cures” do not facilitate lasting or nourishing change.

1. Nutrition Modification: The key to better nutrition is to eat more real food. Make a goal to crowd out the “bad” foods with more nutrient-dense options. Removing processed foods, refined carbohydrates, trans fats, sugars and sugar substitutes from your diet can decrease inflammation and support optimal hormone levels.

Reducing alcohol intake further benefits body composition.

Even a single serving of alcohol can reduce metabolism by more than 70 percent. While this is a temporary effect, it has the potential to add up over time.

Avoid or limit stimulants such as coffee. This can deplete magnesium, strains the nervous system, and can alter gut bacteria.

It has been found that even decaf can do this! Making the switch to green tea, which contains the amino acid L-theanine reduces stress without causing sedation.

It has been found that obesity has a microbial component.

Gut bacteria and proper digestive health is vital to harmonizing hormones. Cortisol makes it more difficult to digest proteins because it decreases stomach acid, increases intestinal permeability

and alters gut flora, leading to weight gain and bloating. Additionally, the birth control pill decreases gut bacteria, decreases liver clearance of estrogen and causes pituitary insensitivity. It can take up to a year to clear and reverse these effects. Probiotics in the form of food or supplementation are vital to promoting weight loss.

2. Nutrient Supplementation: Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to increase adiponectin and improve leptin sensitivity. Adiponectin is a hormone secreted by fat cells that helps regulate metabolism of fats and sugar.

Deficiencies of vitamin B3, vitamin B6, and magnesium can adversely affect healthy f at metabolism. These are powerhouse nutrients helping to convert food into fuel. When your vitamin levels are lacking, the body doesn't have adequate capability to trigger efficient fat burning, thus hampering weight-loss efforts.

Berberine is the most researched supplement to reset insulin sensitivity to support weight loss. It activates an important enzyme nicknamed the “metabolic master switch.”

Di-Indole Methane (DIM) reduces harmful estrogen excess while promoting protective estrogens. You can also improve your good-to-bad estrogen ratio by eating more lightly steamed cruciferous vegetables.

3. Exercise with Intention: Movement is equally vital for metabolic optimization, especially forms of movement that bring enjoyment. It is important to exercise intelligently. It is best to avoid chronic cardio as this can further disrupt the HPA axis and elevate cortisol levels. Burst training and adaptive exercise are more beneficial for stabilizing cortisol and reproductive hormones.

Burst training involves short periods of high intensity exercise with moderatelevel exercise as recovery. It is incredibly efficient without the cortisol-raising side effect of a long run. Moreover, it is extremely effective at raising growth hormone (GH), which maintains lean body mass. Adaptive exercise is even more beneficial for those diagnosed with thyroid conditions, and includes practices such as yoga and Pilates.

Incorporating muscle activation with body weights or light resistance is great for the HPA axis and helps to prevent injuries.

In summary, move frequently. Aim for between two and five hours per week of moderate aerobic exercise. Combine this with one to three brief, intense sessions of full-body functional movements and practice meditation or yoga regularly.

4. Sleep: Make a goal of eight hours of good quality sleep every night. Too much cortisol raises blood sugar and deposits fat at night. Insufficient sleep increases insulin resistance, increasing the risk of obesity. One study demonstrated that even one night of sleep deprivation (four hours) induced insulin resistance in multiple metabolic pathways among healthy participants.

5. Botanicals: Adding plant medicine to the regimen can further support lifestyle interventions and restore proper function to many body systems. Ashwagandha is a wonderful adaptogen that helps to reset cortisol balance. Ashwagandha dials down the HPA so you feel less stressed and prepare for a good night of sleep.

Psychological Relationship We tend to primarily target the physical aspects of weight loss resistance, yet the emotional, mental, social, and spiritual factors are equally, if not more, important.

Psychological factors act as a barrier to many who would like to manage their weight.

Emotions can interfere with maintaining a regular workout routine and making healthy food choices. In a national survey about weight loss barriers, 90 percent of respondents discounted one of the most important factors -- the mind. Reconfiguring the way you look at your body and the foods you feed it, is more effective for weight-loss than mindlessly following a fad diet.

We become emotionally attached to food at a very young age. Most holidays and celebrations are food-focused. The smell of certain foods, like cookies, can create powerful emotional connections.

Over our lifespan we have become conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but also for comfort.

The more we can recognize and acknowledge this, the better equipped we are to manage it appropriately. The goal is to take emotion out of eating and view food as nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. To help recognize the emotional connection you may have to food, identify foods that bring you that comfort and write down why you eat them. Do they evoke a memory, promote a feeling of health, or are you craving those foods out of stress?

Most diets don’t work because they fail to address the root causes that are the most common reasons for weight loss resistance, especially excess cortisol, insulin and/or leptin resistance, estrogen dominance, and problems with the HPA coordination. Starting with lifestyle restructuring and filling nutrient deficiencies, administering herbal therapies if necessary, and addressing the psychological barriers are key to generating weight loss.

Hypothyroidism: Natural Support for a Sluggish Thyroid (PART 1)

o you feel like you’re completely falling apart? If so, now may be a good time to learn about the function of your all-important thyroid gland, how to determine whether it is slowing down, and natural ways to support it so you can start feeling healthier. This two-part article will provide you the basics of this expansive topic to start your journey to greater wholeness.

The Important Function of the Thyroid Gland The tiny thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and semi-circles the windpipe just below the Adam’s apple. It is made up of small sacs filled with thyroglobulin, an iodine-rich protein, and the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3, in smaller amounts). Outside the thyroid, three selenium-dependent enzymes (iodothyronine de-iodinases) convert T4 to T3, the biologically active form of thyroid hormone (TH), but nutrient deficiencies, prescription drugs, and chemical toxicity can interfere with this conversion. These hormones regulate metabolism by controlling the rate at which the body converts oxygen and calories to energy.

According to Stephen Langer, MD (Solved: The Riddle of Illness) (Langer), numerous well-designed studies have shown that “production of thyroid hormone can make or break a person’s health.”

The hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain regulate the production of T4 and T3 (each molecule has four and three iodine atoms respectively). When the blood level of TH falls below normal, the hypothalamus releases thyroid-releasing hormone (TRH), which in turn causes the pituitary to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which causes the thyroid to start working.

When TH levels are adequate, TSH production decreases, which then slows the thyroid gland’s release of new TH. 26

Multiple naturally occurring biological factors can hinder TH activity: (1) T4 also converts to reverse T3 (rT3), an inactive form of T3 that blocks the thyroid hormone receptors in the cell, thus blocking activity of regular T3; (2) most THs (99%) circulating in the blood are metabolically inactive because they are bound to carrier proteins, and only the minute amount of “free” TH (mostly T3) is biologically active and binds to and activates TH receptors (even the slight changes in the amount of thyroid carrier proteins that can be produced by oral contraceptives, pregnancy, and conventional hormone replacement therapy, can lower available free TH); and (3) since even mild adrenal gland dysfunction can interfere with the steady, efficient conversion of T4 to T3, “the adrenal glands must be strengthened for thyroid supplementation to be effective” [Langer; symptoms of adrenal dysfunction include allergies/ asthma/breathing issues, skin issues (acne, eczema, psoriasis, flakiness/dryness), arthritic pains, and emotional swings].

Diagnosing Hypothyroidism: Symptoms & Tests Hypothyroidism exists in both women and men when the thyroid gland fails to make enough THs, which results in lowered metabolic rate (slowed heartbeat, lowered blood pressure, sluggish circulation). The key symptoms of hypothyroidism are: subnormal temperature/increased sensitivity to cold; fatigue/weakness; muscle cramps; digestive problems/chronic constipation; weight gain; dry skin; brittle nails; hair brittleness/lifelessness/loss; infections and slowed wound healing; slow thinking/poor memory; persistent depression and anxiety; female problems (menstrual irregularities, infertility); and diminished/nonexistent appetite and sexual desire.

Unfortunately, since these symptoms can take years to surface, a condition called early/mild, or subclinical, hypothyroidism (SCH - without definite or readily observable symptoms) can commonly go undiagnosed with tests that show elevated TSH (0.5 – 9 µIU/ mL) but normal T4 and T3 levels. Since those with early hypothyroidism are at greater risk for developing overt hypothyroidism, Kenneth Ain, MD, director of the Thyroid Oncology Program at the University of Kentucky, maintains that doctors should screen certain patients for SCH, including: (1) those with family histories of thyroid disease; (2) women who are planning pregnancy, pregnant, or have just given birth; (3) women over age 40, with PMS or perimenopause symptoms, or diagnosed with premature menopause; (4) anyone over age 60; (5) those with depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, a non-thyroid autoimmune disease, or

declining kidney function. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid) is the most common cause of SCH. Hypothyroidism and SCH are also associated with: high cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure; atherosclerosis; increased risk of cardiovascular disease; increased inflammation; weakness of the immune and respiratory systems (due to reduced white blood cell activity); iron-deficiency anemia (due to decreased production of circulating blood cells in response to lowered tissue oxygen needs); and metabolic syndrome.

Traditional thyroid function tests and their interpretations are controversial, do not always tell the whole story, and can thus be misleading. It is therefore important to examine the thyroid with more than a single test, and blood test criteria for thyroid disease should serve as only one parameter. Doctors have multiple tests available for thyroid disease diagnosis, including: 1. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH): While TSH level has long been the favored thyroid dysfunction test, the strategy for its use in diagnosis has been debated and changed over the past 10 years. No single TSH measurement should be deemed conclusive, and TSH alone should not be used to determine medication dosing.

Part of the difficulty in relying on TSH values lies in the fact that they fluctuate with various factors, including time of day (higher in the morning than in the afternoon), infection (increases TSH synthesis), seasons (rises during colder months, drops in the warmest months), a rise in estrogen (from pregnancy, birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy), head injuries (which can damage the hypothalamus and pituitary glands), and fasting (decreases TSH).

The “normal” diagnostic TSH references available to clinicians generally range from 0.45-4.50 µIU/mL, and different medical/scientific associations and academies differ on acceptable upper limits. Studies suggest an optimal range of 0.5-2.0 µIU/mL since TSH above 2.0 may be associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and values below the normal range suggest TH excess (hyperthyroidism or Grave’s disease).

2. Free T4 & T3 (Normal FT4 = 0.7-1.9 ng/ dl) (Normal FT3 = 230-619 pg/d) In symptomatic hypothyroidism, both will be below normal.

3. Reverse T3: A patient may test normal for T4 and T3, but still display hypothyroid symptoms, due to excess production of rT3. Stress and extreme exercise can both elevate rT3 levels and suppress TSH and T3 production.

4. Basal Body Temperature (Normal = 97.8 -98.2º F): A thermometer is tucked into the underarm for ten minutes immediately after waking in the morning and before rising from bed.

Practitioners who use this test maintain that 2-5 consecutive days of readings below 97.8 º indicates hypothyroidism. According to Langer, this test is clinically more accurate than blood tests in patients whose symptoms suggest hypothyroidism, but whose blood work says otherwise.

5. TRH (used with caution in asthma and ischaemic heart disease patients; should not be used in pregnant women) Although TSH testing has largely replaced this test in conventional medicine, there is recent evidence that this may be a valuable diagnostic

6. Autoimmune Antibodies [AgAb antibodies (antithyroglobulin) and TPOAb (thyroperoxidase antibodies)] –It is most prudent, along with standard thyroid testing, to test for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It is important to test specifically for the blood proteins that the body produces against the thyroid gland when this condition exists. Those who are celiac or gluten sensitive are especially prone to developing Hashimoto’s, and those with chronic hives often have elevated thyroid antibodies.

The Hypothyroid Diet Follow the following dietary guidelines to support healthy thyroid function. Eliminate beef (unless organic, grass fed), pork, lamb, and pro-inflammatory refined sugars, dairy, grains, and gluten (in wheat, barley, and rye; a TH imposter that the immune system attacks with antibodies). Consume: (1) only modest quantities of otherwise very healthy organic soy, walnuts, and organic cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts; these foods reduce the amount of iodine available for synthesizing T4 and T3); (2) only healthy, anti-inflammatory fats (coconut and olive oils, high omega-3 fatty acids in wild-caught fish, avocados, sprouted chia/flax/hemp seeds; almonds/walnuts/ Brazil nuts soaked overnight); (3) iodine-rich organic seaweed (kelp, dulse, nori) (Note: iodine intake exceeding 800 mcg/day can lead to SCH); (4) high amounts of mineral- and fiber-rich vegetables and low-sugar berries; and (5) chicken, turkey, and eggs.

From PMS to Menopause…Try Acupuncture!

By Jo-Ann Connelly, RN, L.Ac. cupuncture can be used for girls and women through all phases of life. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the vital energy that travels through the body to all cells and organs through pathways called meridians. When Qi and blood are of adequate quantity and are free flowing, health is present. However, when Qi or blood are inadequate or channels become blocked, disharmony and disease follow. If Qi and blood become stagnant, dampness and heat can lead to phlegm accumulation. Phlegm accumulation is responsible for the development of diseases such as fibrocystic breast disease or fibroid tumors. If health is not restored the body’s ability to maintain normal cell function becomes compromised which in turn can lead to more significant diseases including cancer.

There are several organs and meridians that are associated with gynecological health including the liver, kidney and spleen.

These organs can become imbalanced due to inadequate nutrition, emotional issues, trauma, excessive inactivity, or insufficient sleep.

Organ or meridian disharmony can cause the symptoms associated with PMS, irregular or painful menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, fibroid tumors, fibrocystic breast disease and other pathologies. Listed below are some of the common conditions that acupuncture and TCM can effectively treat: 1. Irregular menstruation or painful menstruation, PMS. Short, long or irregular menstrual cycles, premenstrual syndrome, heavy bleeding and hormone related migraine headaches. These problems are often related to liver Qi stagnation.

Treatment is geared at soothing the liver, reducing emotional imbalance and restoring the free flow of Qi and blood to reduce symptoms. Treatment usually includes acupuncture, cupping and herbal formulas to restore harmony.

2. Infertility. The liver, spleen and kidney organs and meridians are associated with infertility. Acupuncture and moxibustion are effective in balancing hormone levels, improving ovulation and preparing and maintaining a receptive uterine lining.

Several studies have found that acupuncture and can improve pregnancy rates during in-vitro fertilization when treatment is completed prior to and after embryo transfer. Endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome are treated with acupuncture and herbs which are used to normalize hormone levels, improve metabolism and restore a healthier menstrual cycle.

3. Pregnancy-related discomforts. Acupuncture can relieve many of the discomforts that often accompany pregnancy such as morning sickness, heartburn, headache, fatigue, constipation and back pain. Acupuncture treatments are essential for building Qi and blood after delivery, improving milk supply,

and dealing with anxiety or postpartum depression. Acupuncture and moxibustion can assist with inducing labor in a postterm pregnancy limiting or preventing hospital intervention.

4. Fibrocystic breast disease. This condition is related to Qi stagnation, accumulation of heat, chronic disharmony, or phlegm accumulation. The liver and stomach channels both cross the breast, if disharmony is present in the organs or meridians, stagnation may occur bringing heat changes in the breast leading to phlegm accumulation and cyst formation. Acupuncture and herbal formulas are the treatment of choice to restore harmony and allow the body to heal naturally reducing breast lumps, pain and inflammation.

5. Uterine Fibroids. According to TCM theory, fibroids are masses caused by the accumulation of blood, Qi and phlegm.

Fibroids are most common in women of child bearing age.

They can cause significant pain, abdominal distension and heavy menstrual bleeding that at times is severe enough to cause anemia. The spleen, liver and kidney meridians are most often associated with the development of fibroids. The treatment is aimed at reducing the symptoms and halting the growth of the fibroids. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are the treatment of choice for fibroids.

6. Menopause. Acupuncture can relieve many of the common symptoms of menopause including: night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness, changes in libido, digestive changes, memory problems, anxiety and mood swings. From a TCM perspective menopausal symptoms are the result of a decline of Kidney Essence including both the Yin and Yang aspects.

Treatment consists of acupuncture and Chinese herbs used to tonify and nourish the Kidney.

TCM has various treatment modalities available including acupuncture, herbal remedies, cupping, moxibustion, guasha, Tuina, nutritional recommendations and electroacupuncture. Acupuncture can be used as a preventative medicine when treatment is given periodically throughout the year. Treatment helps the body adjust to changing seasons, cope with physical and emotional stressors to maintain the balance of the Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood.

Secrets to Eating Healthy on the Road

t’s a common story: You wake up before dawn, rush to the airport and arrive with only a few minutes to spare before boarding. Glancing around, you realize many breakfast options aren’t available.

You think to yourself, a bagel sounds really delicious right about now. After all, it is vacation! Unfortunately, the bagel leaves you feeling bloated, foggy and fatigued. You forgot to grab a snack, so you eat the free ones the flight attendant gives you. When you finally check into your hotel, you’re tired and starving and there’s no way you want to go to the gym. Instead, you head straight to the hotel bar for some comfort food. The cycle continues and upon returning home you realize you gained a few pounds and feel worse than when you left.

Whether you are traveling for work or fun, it is tempting to also take a vacation from a healthy diet and exercise routine. Eating at airports can seem daunting when the choices for packaged snacks or processed and fast foods are numerous. In a similar way, traveling in your car leaves you at the mercy of the road. Sometimes there aren’t many healthy options along the route. However, just because you are not in your normal routine, doesn’t mean you have to eat foods that leave you feeling fatigued and bloated (or worse)!

The “I can eat whatever, I’m on vacation or I’m traveling for work” attitude results in extra weight and inflammation that is never desired and can last longer than expected. On the bright side, there are quite a few simple and easy ways to ensure you eat nutritious foods and fit in a good sweat while traveling.

The single best strategy to eating healthy while traveling is to plan ahead.

Skip spending a small fortune at the airport and pack your own lunch and dinner.

Depending on the length of your trip, you could even pack breakfast, lunch, and snacks for all your days away! You’ll save a lot of money this way. At the very least, packing your flight meal ahead of time eliminates the stress of finding food at the airport. Plus you can skip that $14 day-old salad!

If you’re worried about the NSA tossing out your packed food, don’t be. Most people don’t realize that food is allowed in your suitcase and to be brought through airport security. You should have no problem as long as you aren’t bringing on fluids greater than 3.4 ounces. If you are really concerned about bringing on a lot of food, you can bring one meal and some snacks with you on the flight and then check your bag packed with the rest of the food. Packing a shoulder cooler with gel ice packs should also be fine, but if you are uncomfortable with ice pack idea, then grab some ice from a drink machine once you are in the terminal. You can absolutely bring a steel or glass water bottle through security; just make sure it is empty. Then find a restaurant or the food court where you can fill it up. Lastly, don’t forget to bring some utensils.

Pack ahead and set your intention Book a hotel room with a mini-fridge or even better, a small kitchen area. Or book an AirBnB with a full kitchen and stove. Before you get to your destination, ask the hotel to

empty out the mini-bar in your room. If your room doesn’t have a fridge, the hotel might be willing to move one into your room upon request. If not, you can buy a styrofoam cooler for a few dollars and use ice to keep everything cool.

If you aren’t able to pack meals ahead of time, make sure you book a hotel that is close to a grocery store. Making healthy choices is easier and cheaper when they are within walking distance. Before you get to the store, plan out some easy meals ahead of time.

If you’re in the car, it’s even easier. Pack a cooler ahead of time. If you can’t pack a cooler and need to stop for food instead, don’t limit your options to fast food. Take advantage of Google and yelp and find a healthy restaurant by searching terms like “organic” or “gluten-free”, “grass-fed”, or “vegetarian”. Another idea is to stop at a supermarket where you can pick up salads and quality meat for lunch (instead of that drive -thru burger).

If you travel by car often, look into buying an electric cooler, which plugs into your car. If not, a cooler with ice packs should still keep foods cool. You can always stop for ice along the way.

Make a clear decision in your mind to not eat the foods that you know are bad for you or that will make you sick. By making the decision ahead of time, you greatly cut back on the likelihood of cheating.

Quality matters Eat real food! Always choose nutrient dense food over packaged, empty calories.

Avoid drinking too many alcoholic drinks.

Don’t eat two cheat meals in a row.

Bulk up on healthy snacks for your cooler. Ideas include: cut vegetables like cucumbers, celery, peppers, and carrots. Individual packets of hummus and/or guacamole to go with your vegetables will last longer than bigger containers. Bake a few sweet potatoes ahead of time and mix them with almond butter (delicious)! Don’t forget to add in some bags of raw unsalted nuts, like walnuts, cashews, or almonds. Hard boiled and peeled eggs are a great source of protein if you do not have a sensitivity to them. Eating fresh fruit increases your vitamin, fiber, and antioxidant levels. Don’t forget pre-made salads. Make your own healthy trail mix with nuts and seeds. Individual packets of walnut, coconut, cashew or almond butter are a convenient way to get in good fat to keep you fuller, longer.

sugary, fatty, or salty food later on. Instead, eat every 2-3 hours.

Eating out at restaurants can still be healthy Don’t miss out on discovering the cuisines that area has to offer. Order a piece of meat, fish, or chicken, with 2 sides of baked or roasted vegetables or salad instead of that extra carbohydrate. Many ethnic foods such as Mediterranean, Indian, and Japanese are healthier options. If you’re driving, forget rest stop restaurants or chains unless you really have to stop there. If you do, order a salad.

Drink lots of water Drinking adequate water is one of the most important habits you can form for yourself. Traveling makes us prone to dehydration. Remembering that water bottle before your flight or car trip is crucial. Water flushes out toxins, prevents dehydration, improves mood, improves skin and organ function, and circulates nutrients. Also, make sure you are drinking water with electrolytes (minerals), as electrolytes are crucial in keeping you hydrated. Airplane air is much drier than the typical air we breathe. Not only will dehydration make you fatigued, but it can also make you overeat. Instead, make sure you are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. Buy gallon water jugs at the grocery store to use to fill up your bottles; it will save you money and seeing them in your room is a good reminder to keep drinking.

4. If your flight is delayed take a walk around the airport.

No excuse to not exercise In a similar way, leaving your gym clothes and running shoes at home can seem easier than trying to fit them in both your suitcase and your schedule. Unfortunately, neglecting nutrition and exercise while traveling can have poor implications for your health, especially if you travel often.

There are many reasons why traveling can disrupt one’s fitness habits. Often times, you sleep less and therefore you are feeling tired. You have less time and your schedule is disrupted. You don’t have your usual gym or equipment or workout class. Recognizing these issues and setting your mind to avoid or overcome them can help you to actually lose weight instead of packing it on during your trip.

7. Search around for free first time passes to try at local gyms.

9. Try a new type of fitness class.

10. Try a new activity: horseback riding, paddle boarding, wind surfing, canoeing, to name a few. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to try something new is healthy for both your body and your spirit.

Since I always seem to receive spiritual guidance in derivatives of three, I knew there must be one more out there for me; and yet, I couldn’t imagine anything to top the guidance of “freedom.” The Divine began to laugh and said, “That’s because it is on the other end: Awareness, Commitment, Mastery, Service, Leadership and Freedom.”

Of course, all great successes begin with Awareness and end with Freedom but it takes dedicated Commitment, Mastery, Service and Leadership in between! Within the next week, I boarded a train to take a 6-hour ride to Northern Vermont. All along my train journey, The Divine continued the conversation by explaining each stage, as follows: 1. AWARENESS: The first stage begins when you realize that there is more to this life than just what you can experience through your five senses. This sixth sense connects you to a knowing that there is a presence available to you that exists beyond the confines of your

normal daily life. This warm, loving presence called Spirit or the Divine has always been a part of your life, even though you may not have been aware.

2. COMMITMENT: The second stage begins when you must know more about this extraordinary presence in your life.

You begin to read, to take classes, to venture into conversations with others.

Regardless of the reaction of others, you tenaciously stay on your path. In this stage, synchronistic events become more prevalent in your life as the Divine begins to communicate with you.

3. MASTERY: The third stage begins when you move from a strong curiosity to a full commitment to become the spiritual person that you keep reading about in books or listening to in class. You dive deeper into the teachings of Spiritual Masters and you begin to heal the traumas from this lifetime and past lifetimes.

Spiritual Seekers love to seek and often get stuck in the mastery stage. Moving beyond mastery is vital because you are required to serve as well.

4. SERVICE: If you are on your spiritual journey, then you are on this planet to serve. Fortunately, you have opportunities to serve yourself, your family, your community and our world. You can serve in both your personal and professional life. For example, you can serve others by simply holding the door open for another or by creating a service business. Just know, the more you serve, the more you emulate the Divine in this world.

5. LEADERSHIP: By this stage of your spiritual journey, you have gathered a deep

understanding of spiritual concepts, a service mind-set and a desire to integrate spirituality into your moment to moment living. Now, when you become out of alignment with the Divine, you re-align in a faster, more graceful time frame.

By living a dedicated spiritual life, you naturally lead others along their spiritual journey.

6. FREEDOM: In this last stage, you are rewarded for all your dedication to your spiritual journey with love, peace, joy and abundance. Divine love is experienced by a whole heart that shares love in an unconditional manner. Divine peace is practiced by knowing that you are never alone and that you are One with the Divine. Divine joy is accomplished by seeing the world though the Divine’s positive lens. Divine abundance is achieved by making an impact on others’ lives through unwavering service.

Skin Refresher 101

aking care of your skin is so important – and so easy! Once you start, it quickly becomes a daily routine, just like brushing your teeth. However, sometimes we need a little guidance in deciding what regimen is best for us. This is where your esthetician or skincare professional can help.

Time is sometimes an obstacle for people who can’t follow a daily skincare routine. If you really think about it, it only takes 3 to 4 minutes to properly do the

minimum three steps; cleanse, tone and moisturize. It’s really not a lot of time to get great looking skin!

Affordability is another reason people don’t take care of their skin. Yes, quality skincare products are more expensive than over-the-counter products from drug stores or department stores. Quality products do much more for you such as actually clean, tone and moisturize your skin! Over-thecounter products are of lower quality compared to professional products. This topic could be discussed in a separate article, but for now, suffice it to say that the difference can be summed up as a result of a lower percentage of active ingredients, additional marketing costs, and perhaps a company trained professional (think marketing again) recommending the company’s products.

If you are only going to do three things to your skin in the morning and again at night, they should be to cleanse, tone and moisturize. Adding serums and exfoliators are excellent for your skin but try not to get bogged down with too many products. Your skin can only accept a certain amount of product and the rest is really just wasted.

Cleansing is the first important step in taking care of your skin and it is done to remove dirt and debris that has collected on it during the day. There are different cleansers for different skin types. Check with your esthetician to be sure you are using the proper cleanser for you. You should really use a quality cleanser as the ingredients will be good for your skin. Most quality products also remove eye makeup and this saves you a step. Massaging the cleanser for 2 to 3 minutes is sufficient before rinsing off.

Washing with soap is too harsh and water is not harsh enough. Beware of over cleaning or over stimulating the skin, with the use

of brushes for example, as this can damage your skin.

The next step is toning. Toner is often overlooked yet it is a very important step.

The toner, available for different skin types, should always be applied right after cleansing. If you do not currently use a toner, I challenge you to use one for a month and see the changes in your skin. Toner balances your skin’s pH level which is interrupted after cleaning. It brings the skin’s pH back to its normal level so it doesn’t overproduce sebum. It also hydrates your skin which is important for all skin types. It’s an integral part of skincare and should not be skipped.

The third and last step is moisturizing. All skin types need to moisturize, yes, even oily skin! And you guessed it - there are different moisturizers for different skin types. Again, consulting with your esthetician will be helpful to you. The role of the moisturizer is to hydrate and seal the skin.

The moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated and traps the water that’s already in your skin so it doesn’t evaporate. This gives a smooth and soft feel rather than a rough and cracked look. For best results your moisturizer should be changed as the seasons change. Your esthetician can help.

There is so much to talk about skincare yet it can be easy and rewarding when you see how much your skin has improved if you follow the three steps: cleanse, tone, moisturize. I’d love to hear about the changes in your skin once you begin your new regimen!

The Beginning of the End

I

t may seem strange for me to start a discussion about how tohandle loss and the death of loved ones by saying that death is not the worst outcome. There is a point in everyone’s life, no matter their species, when one’s body no longer functions and is not a comfortable place to be in.

Symbolically, when people draw purple balloons, butterflies andkites going up into the sky they are telling me, often unconsciously,that they are ready for the healing that comes when they make thespiritual transition and leave their bodies. Death is about beginnings, not endings. We do not call graduations terminations, we callthem commencements. Every caterpillar and butterflyunderstands what the transformation means better than most people.

I have experienced a near death experience as a four-year-old choking on a toy. I aspirated, and I can tell you when you leave your body you will most likely not want to come back. Even blind people see when they have a NDE and are often upset when resuscitated and find themselves back in their body and blind again.

I can remember building a cairn over the grave of one of our dogs who died and bringing a rock to the site every morning as I walked by his grave. Then one morning I thought what I wanted to bring him was beauty, so I picked a flower to place there. From that morning on I looked for beauty because of my loss and not a cold stone.

I have written about the candle that represents every one of ourdead loved ones. I do not want to put out their candles with my excessivegrieving and tears. I have learned to forgive myself as I know they would forgive me, and to use my pain to nourish myself andothers and make our lives meaningful. When one is hungry one does not get angry at one’s body. You seek nourishment.

Animals and children are complete and can be our teachers.

When a cat named Missy came into our home, and I didn’t notice she wasn’t eating well, I felt enormous grief and guilt when she developed liver failure and died. Her grave and cairn lies in the yard outside our door and I think of her often, but I also know she has forgiven me and wants me to enjoy the day. We must use our loss and express our compassion and when we do the curse becomes a blessing and helps us to become complete too.

The key is enjoying the day as all animals do. The way to die laughing is to accomplish what you are here to accomplish, and animals do that much better than we do. To quote a veterinarian who lether patients help her through surgery, “I can amputate a leg or jaw and they wake up and lick their owner’s faces. They are here to love and be loved and teach us a few things.”

The other, and more practical aspect of dying laughing, is to remember the things you or others have done and tell stories about what you remember. Let your departed loved ones bring a smile to your face and life. Animals have no trouble doing this but we, the incomplete species, need to learn to let the child out and to not be normal.

Also remember we have a great deal to say about when we die. So do not feel guilty if your beloved dies when you are not present. I have seen this with our pets (who wait for family members to leave), and with my parents and patients. So share your love but also give them time to be with others and leave the room if you think they will feel better with you not experiencing their death.

Since consciousness is not local there is still a part of all our departed loved ones that is still here for us to experience and sharewith. I could tell endless stories about the experiences of loved ones who have lost family members or animals and had them return spiritually or symbolically after their death. My mother’s name was Rose. After she died, we kept finding roses and pennies everywhere. Finding pennies is my way of knowing I am on the right path and my mom’s great grandchildren started spontaneously calling them pennies from heaven.

When our beloved Smudge Bunny died I played a tape someone had given me as I drove to pick up her body. Dear Barbra Streisand sang to me…“They say there’s a universal plan for every woman, for every man; But in our darkest hour it’s hard to understand why did the right road take the wrong turn? Why did our heart break and why did we get burned? Just like the seasons there are reasons for the path we take. There are no mistakes; just lessons to be learned.” Death is the greatest teacher there is about life; so live and learn.
