iane “Dee” Kittle, owner and creative genius of the popular bakery Dee's One Smart Cookie is on a mission to educate the world: gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan, peanut free and now tree nut free items do not have to taste like saw dust and be heavy as door stops. Preparing baked goods with the best and freshest ingredients can not only taste good but can be good for you. "I wasn't looking to make products that tasted good 'for glutenfree products.' My goal was to create products that tasted great, period," says Kittle.

Located in Glastonbury, CT, this cozy bakery is chock full of items usually forbidden to those on restrictive diets. Glass cases are filled with exquisitely decorated birthday cakes, cupcakes, cookies, bars, brownies and pies.

A highlight of the offerings is the gluten free breads that are crusty, chewy and light as a feather. Rolls, pizza, flat breads and hamburger buns roll out of the ovens daily. The aroma on entering the establishment is a heavenly delight for the senses.

For many people on restrictive diets being able to eat pizza again, enjoy breads and muffins and dive into tasty cookies and brownies is a dream come true. “When visiting my bakery for the first time people don't know whether to laugh or cry, dance or sing,” said Dee. And every day is different at Dee’s!

The selection of treats and breads change daily with suggestions and observations gathered from her lively Facebook account. Dee actively solicits feedback from her customers as to what they like and what they may want to see in the future. Customers can count on flatbread Tuesday, Wednesday is egg and yeast free day for those following a vegan diet and Friday is gluten free pizza day.

Catering to Diet Restrictions and Allergies Trained as a pastry chef and sugar artist, Dee knows first hand the challenge

of living a restricted diet. While working as a sugar artist she started suffering from recurring joint pain, swelling, fatigue and gastrointestinal problems and was diagnosed as having celiac disease, a severe auto-immune reaction to gluten.

Even ingesting a small amount of gluten, which is the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and conventionally processed oats causes the immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine and impedes absorption of nutrients, in addition to other medical conditions. It is estimated that this disease affects one out of 95 people in the U.S. Individuals must follow a lifelong gluten-free diet to allow the intestine to heal and prevent further damage to the immune system. Since gluten is found in many food items, including toothpaste, spices, and many packaged items, celiac sufferers have to learn to read the labels on everything.

An Organic Farm to Learn and Grow Additionally an opportunity to develop a teaching farm in Glastonbury is in the grass roots stage and Dee is active as part of the steering committee. Dee's passion for fresh, organic produce that is locally grown is a dream come true.

"We need to be aware of where our food comes from and how it is being processed. With the price of oil rising and the costs of transporting our food also rising we need the resources to grow our own organic food. " The proposed farm to be developed at town owned Wind Hill Farm would be a not-for-profit teaching farm that would include community garden plots, an organic farm operation and farm stand, and teaching classes and events for residents.

The Glastonbury Farm Friends site states the purpose is to "re-imagine the working farm, celebrate organically grown local produce and inspire healthy, environment-friendly living. " This endeavor would combine Dee's quest to create the most delicious food with the best possible ingredients for a healthier, happier lifestyle. Prescription for Living

Living Consciously

A

s a surgeon I have had the experience of operating upon people who are living unconsciously. I have learned that their conscious mind is still able to hear and is affected by what it hears. If you are alive and not under the effect of drugs you cannot help but live consciously. The question, however, is what are you conscious of while you are living?

For me living consciously is about serving others through my acts of love.

Life can be that simple. That does not mean that I do not care for and love myself as well and say no, on occasion, when things arise that I do not want to do. I am choosing to love the world in my way and not have the will of others imposed upon my conscious choices.

Why we are conscious and why we

have choices is to give our lives meaning.

The Garden of Eden, where I attend board of directors of heaven meetings as an advisor, is devoid of consciousness because there are no choices there. The weather is perfect, everyone loves you and after a few days it all loses its meaning and I am glad to get home to my wife and pets.

When they love me it means a great deal because they are making a conscious choice to do so.

Remember I did not say you have to consciously like everyone and everything. I said to love. Consciously choosing to love will heal you, kill with kindness, torment with tenderness and blind the faultfinders of the world. Consciously loving another is the world’s greatest weapon. Some day may we all realize its potential to heal the world and bring the garden to earth.

So tomorrow if you are fortunate enough to awaken from sleep choose to love and live consciously. If you act like a loving grandparent toward all living things you will become aware of what I mean.

When all the children of one generation are raised on love by parents, educators and religions, creation begins and destruction ceases. If you want to evaluate your level of consciousness ask yourself these questions.

Who can I hate? Who can I love?

Who is the enemy? What is evil?

‘There was the word and the word was with god and the word was god’ should read, there was consciousness and consciousness was with god and consciousness was god. God is loving, intelligent, conscious, energy. How is this revealed by the nature of creation? Think about the ability of a wound to heal and the fact that the conversion of water to ice defies the laws of physics. Ice floats and preserves our planet. Who worked that one out? No other liquid acts this way when frozen.

Also cells are conscious in all living things. They make choices and carry memories. We are seeing this today in the donor’s memories retained by transplanted organs. So the organ recipient’s consciousness is changed by these memories. Last but not least consciousness exists without bodies too.

Bodies permit consciousness to perform acts of creation. That is why we have them but when the body dies consciousness still exists. During near death, out of the body experiences, people continue to see and those who are blind see when they are out of their bodies too. What is seeing my friends?

Consciousness is also what gives us our past life experiences. It is consciousness that continues to exist, with its knowledge, and is passed on to a new body when it is born to life.

Life is a school so please work at becoming a graduate student and stop hurting others who are not at your level of consciousness.

God be with you. Or should it be consciousness be with you?

What Is Making Our Children and Teens Fat?

O

besity in children has reached epidemic proportions. More and more children are overweight and many are even attaining levels of morbid obesity. In conventional medicine, obesity is determined by one’s Body Mass Index or BMI which is calculated based on a person’s height and weight. Because a child’s height and weight are constantly changing, BMI is indexed by age for children and presented as a percentile. A BMI greater than or equal to the 85th percentile is defined as overweight. A BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile is defined as obese. A BMI greater than or equal to the 99th percentile is defined as morbidly obese.

The tendency for children to develop problems with weight occurs at approximately five or six years of age and during adolescence. The causes are numerous and include poor diet, lack of exercise, environmental toxins, the use 14

of medications such as steroids and/or psychiatric medications, stress brought on by a variety of different factors such as the need to do well in school, bullying, death or suicide of a friend or family member, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, family problems such as divorce, sexual, emotional and/or physical abuse, obsessive compulsive disorders leading to overeating and binging, and last, but not least, our genes.

We are literally killing ourselves and our children for the sake of convenience.

The increase in two income families has left less time for food shopping and preparation of healthy meals at home.

More and more families are choosing to rely on takeout, fast foods and eating out which translates into larger portions of lesser quality processed foods being eaten on a regular basis rather than on special occasions.

in nature. Steel cut oats are a processed food. The whole food form of oats found in nature is the oat groat which resembles a grain of rice. When these oat groats are cut with a steel knife they are “processed” into steel cut oats. Even peanut butter is a processed food as peanuts that have been ground up from their whole state. We refer to these foods as minimally processed and are the next best thing to eating the whole food. On the other end of the spectrum are foods that are highly processed such as Cheerios for example.

The manufacturer of Cheerios uses the words “whole grain” to describe the oats used in Cheerios. Although it is true that “whole grain” oat bran is the first ingredient listed on the Cheerios box, the end product is certainly not “whole grain.” The whole grain is combined with modified food starch, another name for gluten, sugar, salt, tripotassium phosphate, oat fiber, wheat starch (more gluten), vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) added to preserve freshness and then there is a listing of other added vitamins and minerals. The dry ingredients are mixed with water to form a batter. The batter is then pressed through a mold to create the “o” and then the “o” is dried. After this, hot steam is applied to the cereal in a high pressure cylinder.

Following this there is a little more drying and then vitamins and minerals are sprayed on the “o’s” completing the process.

Much of the modern diet consists of highly processed foods “cooked” up in laboratory type settings and then made for the masses by large manufacturers focused on maximizing profits. Millions of advertising dollars are spent in an attempt (often successful) to sell products that feed our addiction to sugar or make false or misleading claims about the nutritional value of these products.

Because of this people understand the need to read food labels but often do not understand what they are reading.

As human beings, our genes function or are expressed optimally when we eat food which comes directly from nature or is minimally processed. Genetically modified or genetically engineered foods do not fit the bill. The more processed a food the more it is lacking in nutrients. When we eat processed foods the body must work harder to digest, ab-

sorb and assimilate what little nutrients are present. This is energetically draining for the body which can cause accelerated aging, obesity and chronic dis-ease.

In addition, consuming nutrient poor foods creates a cycle of constant craving as the body is always searching to meet its nutritional needs.

Technology, though amazing, is also taking a toll on the health of our children by bringing them inside the home to sit and watch hours of television and to play video games. This inactivity combined with high calorie/low nutrition diets is a major contributor to the expanding waistlines of our children.

Children in America watch on average more than twenty two hours of television per week. That is more than three hours per day. Television, though relaxing, is a brain drain. There is no interaction, just passive watching and listening and other than the history channel and occasional nature show there is little educational value to be gained. Instead, our children by the age of eleven will have witnessed approximately eight thousand murders and by the age of eighteen will have seen about two hundred thousand acts of violence. Not only are our children becoming fat from hours of TV and video games but one can only imagine the psychological and emotional toll of witnessing such violence.

Sitting in front of the television and eating a meal is commonplace. Sitting down at the kitchen or dining room table with a home cooked meal and family dinner conversation has become obsolete. Parents and children spend on average three and a half minutes per week in meaningful conversation. In comparison, children spend one thousand six hundred and eighty minutes per week in front of the television. That is greater than five hundred times more time spent watching television rather than conversing with family. This helps to explain the state of emotional and physical unwellbeing of our children.

Technology has also brought us environmental toxins as postwar chemicals came into agriculture creating many jobs and increasing farm yields. Unfortunately, increased productivity in farming has its downside. The production and use of chemicals has skyrocketed in the past 50 years and our exposure to this chemical soup has become virtually unavoidable.

Plastics, cleaning products, personal care products are a few of the offenders

worth mentioning here. These manmade products enter the body via the skin, lungs or digestive system and many are categorized as xeno-estrogens. Xeno means foreign. These manmade estrogens act like estrogen in the body and as a result can increase body fat causing obesity, depression and anxiety, contribute to insomnia and fatigue and also increase one’s risk of developing cancer.

Technology, then, plays multiple roles in the obesity plague stalking our youth.

Genes are what ultimately predispose us to the development of dis-ease including obesity. If one parent is obese, a child has a fifty percent chance of be-

ing obese. If both parents are obese, a child has an eighty five percent chance of becoming obese. These are not great odds but we do have control over our genetic destiny by the way we live our lives. Everything we do from the air we breathe to the food we eat influences how our genes are expressed. We decide. We can be fat or we can be thin.

We have the power. We can no longer blame our genes as it is the environment in which our genes live that determines how they are expressed. But genes are only part of the problem; eating habits which are learned in the home environment play a very important role. Bing-

ing and overeating can be learned responses to stress in our environment. Change the environment and one can change the outcome. It may be difficult, as many of these learned responses became a part of us at a very early age, but it can be done.

Medications are also a cause of obesity in our children.

Many psychiatric medications can cause weight gain. Their use in adolescents and even preadolescents is largely on the rise as depression and anxiety trouble more and more of our

youth. TV violence, violent video games along with the many other life stressors our children are exposed to on a daily basis are contributing factors. The need for chronic steroid use because of the increase in chronic dis-ease in children is also a factor in the obesity pandemic.

We know that obesity in adults predisposes them to a variety of health issues. Obesity in children can cause these same problems. Heart dis-ease, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, breathing problems and emotional problems as noted above are becoming much more prevalent in children. It has been predicted that this current generation may be the first generation where parents outlive their children. This is a serious and alarming statement and we need to do everything possible to prevent this prediction from becoming a reality.

In my opinion, anything worth having is worth fighting for and that includes our health and the health of our children.

Health is not a God given right. It is earned through hard work and dedication just like everything else in life. For the sake of our children we must first learn how to best take care of ourselves and then teach them these lifesaving skills.

For two hundred percent of humans’ existence we ate whole foods that came directly from nature. Food was not manufactured in a laboratory. Food was never used as a reward because it was scarce and precious. Family mealtime was the highlight of the day when everyone gathered together at the end of the day to eat, drink and share the events of their day no matter how trivial they might be. There were no restaurants or fast foods or takeout. We hunted for our food. We grew our food. We harvested our food. We prepared our food.

We were very much in touch with our food, where it came from and who prepared it.

Eating local, in season and organic as much as possible is a way for us to get back to the roots of our existence and feed our genes what they want to be fed. Eating home cooked meals and planning healthy snacks and meals in advance allows for healthier food choices, greater portion control, less expense and quality time spent together as a family. This is what will change the health of our children and ultimately, the health of our nation.

We are not meant to be sedentary beings. We are meant to move. Today we hunt for and gather our food in the grocery store, walking the aisles collecting what we need. We must increase our activity. Engaging in a family activity such as hiking, biking, kayaking, tennis, and golf are ways to get the entire family moving together. We need to reconnect with our children and this is another way to do so that encourages health and healthy relationships.

We can minimize our exposure to environmental toxins by examining the products we use to clean our homes and offices with, our personal care products and our way of storing food and water. Using vinegar and baking soda or other “green” products to clean is important. Helping children to understand that everything that they put onto their skin is absorbed into circulation and teaching them to read the ingredients of all of their personal care products is also necessary. Encouraging them to look up online those ingredients which they are not familiar with may help them to understand, first of all that they are putting chemicals on their body and then with further investigation, the dangers of these chemicals. They might be surprised by what they learn.

Petroleum based personal care products should be avoided. Storing foods and beverages in glass rather than plastic containers is also a great way to reduce exposure to xenoestrogens. Limiting exposure to alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs as well as pharmaceutical drugs is also vital as they all have adverse effects on the body when used on a regular basis. Looking for alternatives to pesticides for keeping lawns green and growing well can reduce our exposure to chemicals. Drinking filtered water, mineral water or herbal teas are great ways to stay hydrated and to flush the body of toxins.

Having plants and air filters in the home can help provide healthy oxygen to our living areas so that the air we breathe is as healthy and clean as it can be.

We are a quick fix society and believe that there must be a pill to cure any dis-ease, but there are no shortcuts to healthy living. As we learn more about the importance of lifestyle in preventing and curing dis-ease it becomes essential that we change our ways of living and feeding our children. We must take responsibility for our health and the health of our children. Changing the way that we live is not easy. It is a process.

It cannot be done overnight.

The Garlic Farm...

More Than Just Cloves

he trend to buy locally grown food is nothing new for Gary Cirullo, enjoying his 13th year as owner and steward of the land at The Garlic Farm. Having been involved in farming one way or another all his life, Gary has watched the steady rise of popularity in eating fresh local produce.

Nestled along the rolling hills of West Granby, CT, The Garlic Farm specializes in a delicious hardneck variety of garlic, the German White. Noted for its bite, area chefs clamor for this delicacy for their customers. Additionally in the spring the garlic scapes, which are the curled green stalks that grow from hardneck varieties of garlic, are harvested in a labor intensive way. Snapping the scape helps the garlic clove grow larger.

Workers snap off the scapes by hand on their hands and knees. Working two rows at a time, this old fashioned and patient approach to harvesting echoes Gary's approach to farming in maintaining the integrity of this land.

Don't let the name fool you. The Garlic Farm grows more than this tasty version of "the stinking rose". The Garlic Farm is pesticide free, uses only organic fertilizer and offers a full line of vegetables, including tomatoes, eggplants, squash, peppers, cucumbers and pumpkins. Gary's method of using black plastic landscaping cloth helps to inhibit any weed growth, so no herbicides are needed. Early in the planting season the cloth is laid down along the rows, covering the entire field from end to end. Drip lines are incorporated into the black plastic and are in place when irrigation is needed for the crops.

Patient practicality The benefits of providing quality vegetables that are pesticide free is what it is all about for Gary. Having grown up in Rocky Hill farm country, Gary had first hand knowledge of what it takes to be a successful farmer. "The best farms www.naturalnutmeg.com

I know are the ones that are neat and clean with all machinery well taken care of. Everything is in its place,” he said.

With beautifully maintained acreage, some bordering the Salmon River, Gary knows every part of the almost 20 acre farm well. Working as a carpenter for over 20 years also gave him the experience and an eye for detail that comes in handy in running the farm.

A graduate of the University of Connecticut's highly regarded Agricultural College, Gary knows that the more natural and organic approach to farming allows consumers to be confident that what they buy is fresh, wholesome and chemical free. Working on the farm is labor intensive with the day starting before sunrise and ending well after sunset. A constantly moving force of energy, Gary's philosophy to farming is that it is a double-edged sword. "Most of the time I love it. But you have to keep moving forward. You have to adapt to constantly changing conditions that nature hands

you. If you are not moving forward than you are taking two steps back." Each year the growing conditions change and you have to adapt. This year the three main nemeses to the crops are deer, crows and wild turkeys. Keeping them in check and not munching on the crops keep the workers at The Garlic Farm busy.

On the day I visited the farm, over 5,000 organic tomato plants were being strung up between rows of wooden posts with twine. Around 20,000 pepper plants, sweet and hot, were already in the ground, and the fields were being furrowed for the pumpkin crops. A worker on the farm, Jaime, was busy helping string up the lines. With plans to start a farm this winter in Costa Rica she is learning all she can from Gary.

Teaching the next generation of farmers the traditional method to farming is part of the plan for Gary. Each year he takes on a few apprentices and shows them the ropes for working a farm.

Gary is pondering the idea of becoming a CSA, Community Supported Agriculture Farm. It would be a small group, with maybe 20 shares. Also he is concerned about the wide usage of genetically modified seeds, or GM, in most of the vegetables that we do eat.

He buys his seeds through an organic seed company in Maine to make sure his crops are not GM.

Visit the Red Barn Farm Stand and pick some flowers The rambling red barn houses the farm stand which from July through October is chock full of vegetables and flowers. Additionally a cutting garden of zinnias will be available for customers to stroll and pick fresh bouquets for their summer time table. Teenagers and Natural Medicine

T

eenage years…a time of enormous transition, challenge and reward.

The only thing you can be sure of is nothing will ever be the same after puberty begins. There is the exciting development of a new body shape and form, the struggle with a new menstrual cycle, and hormonal changes. Adolescents anticipate a new life as a partner and a sexual person, experience social challenges as the pecking order in school develops, and begin to establish a new relationship within the family structure.

They discover that although they once felt invincible, unfortunately they are vulnerable in many ways.

Naturopathic and Chinese medicine are on the rise as both primary and adjunctive care modalities for people of all ages. The teenage demographic is rapidly turning to natural medicine to fulfill their healthcare needs. Some teenagers are brought to naturopathic or Chinese medicine practitioners by family members or friends, others come on their own accord. Common physical complaints bringing teenagers to the office are acne, menstrual difficulties, sports injuries, pain, and headaches. Common mental or emotional concerns include anger issues, hyperactivity, drug use, addiction, depression, and sleep difficulties.

Naturopathic and Chinese medicine practitioners approach these concerns by seeking out the root cause. Optimal health is considered to be a state of ev-

er-changing balance, and symptoms are the fire alarms that alert the patient and the physician to imbalances. These can be on the physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual level, and treatment can be through a variety of types of medicines.

They include prescription medications, herbs, homeopathic remedies, physical medicine, counseling, acupuncture, Chinese herbs, energy medicine, and more.

Adolescent health is unique in that change occurs at an accelerated pace, and often symptoms are dramatic. In addition, teenagers are in the process of developing a whole new adult body, and are therefore unfamiliar with all the new sensations and needs involved. They are often unaware of how much sleep, food and water their adult body needs. Adolescents are flooded with sex hormones, which are necessary for the development of secondary sexual characteristics. This tidal wave of hormones carries with it extreme and confusing sensations that no other age group experiences.

Emotionally, the desires and needs of teenagers have changed as well, and the activities and relationships that satisfied them as a child are no longer enough.

They are called to establish themselves as separate from their family, and they begin to need a new type of companionship with their peers.

are experiencing. They are developing a deeper and broader consciousness, and everything is a process of discovery, including their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Their very real need to establish themselves as new adults and separate from their parents makes it extremely difficult for teenagers to ask adults for help. A naturopathic and Chinese medicine practitioner can become a trusted adult who is outside of the family that the adolescent can turn to for guidance. It is essential that the practitioner be experienced in working with teenagers to build an optimal therapeutic relationship.

When a teenage patient comes in to my office, my primary goal is to establish a relationship of mutual trust and respect. It is essential that teenage patients feel honored as newly developing, autonomous adults. They can then come to understand and accept the responsibilities of this new role. A first visit with a naturopathic or Chinese physician is usually an hour long. It consists of an in-depth conversation about every aspect of the patients’ health. This is true for patients of all ages; however, consultations with teenagers include their experience of development, their social interactions, and their goals and aspirations during this time of great transition.

Included in the discussion is their understanding of sex, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, prevention of

unwanted pregnancy, and their contact with drugs and alcohol. I find it essential to ask my teenage patients direct and specific questions in a non-judgmental atmosphere. It is also essential that they understand that their naturopathic or Chinese medicine practitioner is not a parent, and will not fill a parental role.

They will instead serve as an ally and partner who will help them navigate pitfalls of the teenage experience.

Through open and thorough conversation, followed by a complete physical exam, a holistic picture of the patients’ life emerges. Naturopathic and Chinese medicine provide uniquely useful perspectives through which we can understand all imbalances. This can range from the simple to the complex.

For example, a simple imbalance may be caused by the patients’ inexperience and difficulty sleeping or eating in healthy ways. In this case, gentle education is often all that is needed. Sex hormones are a slightly more complex concept. Estrogen and testosterone are produced in high levels during our teenage years and are processed and detoxified by the body through the liver. If the liver is congested through constitutional imbalances, toxins, or disease, excessive amounts of sex hormones can accumulate in the body.

This can lead to mood disorders, acne, headaches, and many other symptoms. In this case, the therapeutic approach is to gently detoxify the liver.

Increased consumption of leafy green vegetables, increased water intake, herbal supplementation, and exercise may be all that is required to return to a healthy balance. As teenagers age, preexisting food intolerances that did

not cause obvious symptoms in the past can become problematic. These can cause congestion in the liver leading to the aforementioned symptoms. Food intolerances can cause a myriad of other concerns as well affecting many body systems. Hyperactivity, inflammatory conditions, and menstrual imbalances can occur. In this case, the physician tests for food intolerances, and follows with specific dietary instructions.

On the mental, emotional, and spiritual level, imbalances in teenagers often become dramatic because everything in the patients’ life is changing. It is essential that the practitioner be available for the teenager to address any private or confusing issues. Having experienced professional input is often all that the adolescent needs to allay their fears and to help them feel empowered to make positive choices. However, imbalances on these levels often require deeper work. Through the use of homeopathic medicines, energy medicine, counseling, acupuncture, and many other approaches, mental and emotional wellbeing becomes possible.

Naturopathic and Chinese medicine provide our community with many ways to support the profound transition that is the teenage years. Why Can’t I Just Relax?

And What To Do So You Can

H

ave you ever tried to relax, but find that you just can’t? Perhaps it’s the end of the day, the dishes are done, the kids (pets, significant other, etc.) are quiet, and it’s time to let go.

You sit down in a comfortable chair with the TV on, or maybe with a good book or companion.

But relief doesn’t come...

Instead of sinking down into a restful state, your mind starts to work. “Is everything done?” “What do I need to do tomorrow?” “Did I forget something?”

Maybe there aren’t only thoughts – but unpleasant physical sensations. Maybe

you feel jumpy, or “itchy”, like you can’t sit still. You might feel pressure in your head, or your heart is pounding, or uncomfortable electric sensations in your arms or legs. Or maybe the opposite you feel totally shut down and numb, like a circuit breaker has flipped.

What’s going on?

The above describes the symptoms of a nervous system that has lost its natural resilience. Like all mammals, human beings are biologically wired to identify and respond to threats (also known as stress), take appropriate defensive action, survive (hopefully!), then recover

and return to a resilient state. Evolutionary forces developed this system over the course of millennia. (Think of a lion chasing our forebears on the savannah.) Our nervous system is beautifully designed to activate in response to a threat, and then to deactivate when the threat has passed. This phenomenon is sometimes described as the “fight or flight” response (or “fight, flight, freeze” response). Once the threat is gone, it no longer serves our survival to expend the tremendous energy it takes to maintain an activated state. In fact the opposite is true. Then, survival usually depends upon conserving as much energy as possible.

However, in modern human beings this system can go awry. Typically this occurs when the system has been activated, but (for reasons discussed below) has not been able to discharge the energy that was charged up in response to the threat. This undischarged energy remains stored in the nervous system, waiting for an opportunity to complete the cycle of de-activation and return the system to normal.

What are these “threats” that activate the nervous system? Basically, a threat is whatever a particular nervous system perceives as a threat. Leaders in the field of trauma research express this principle by saying that trauma is in the person, not in the event. An event that might activate a fight-or-flight response in my nervous system might not activate yours at all – and vice-versa. Whether we get activated can depend upon our personal histories, our genes, and a variety of other factors. (Of course there are some external threats, like a robber pointing a gun at one’s face, which would be perceived by most everyone’s nervous systems as activating!) Thousands of years ago, our nervous systems might have been activated because a lion was chasing us for its potential lunch. Today, we could experience the same level of activation while making a presentation at work, when caught in a traffic jam, or while arguing with a spouse.

What prevents a nervous system from following the natural cycle of discharging this activated energy? The “discharge” part of the cycle is controlled by our parasympathetic nervous system, a part that is not under our voluntary con-

trol. This is why you can’t just make yourself relax. The parasympathetic nervous system is like the brakes in a car. The brakes engage to slow the system down when we perceive the threat is over, and to discharge any energy remaining from the flight or fight response. When not interfered with, discharges can include visceral, bodily reactions like trembling, deep breaths (breaths that “breathe us”, versus breaths that we voluntarily take), crying, shaking, etc. Any fight or flight responses or movements that were not completed may also need to be discharged.

Unfortunately for human beings, we tend to be our own worst enemies on this score. Both as a culture and individually, we tend to stifle bodily reactions as they are typically interpreted as signs of weakness or as being otherwise socially inappropriate. “Be a man”.

“Control yourself”. “Don’t be a sissy”.

“Don’t embarrass me”. “Don’t embarrass yourself”. These are the kinds of spoken and unspoken admonitions that come to mind. We consider it admirable when someone doesn’t “fall apart” after a stressful event. Yet “falling apart” (viz.

– releasing held tension) is exactly what our nervous systems need to do after being activated in order to return to baseline resilience. We stop these reactions, or rush away to the next activity, not allowing enough time for our nervous systems to catch up.

What happens if over time, these discharge reactions are repeatedly thwarted? They build up inside. And the nervous system becomes more and more tense – resulting in the “I can’t relax” experience (or if the tension builds too much, in “shut down”).

How do you know if your “I can’t relax” experience means you’re carrying around undischarged energy in response to past events? Well, activation that’s caused by events in the present– this week’s workload, today’s argument with your spouse, etc. will usually respond to the application of basic stress reduction and relaxation techniques. only partially, you’re probably dealing with stored activation. This is especially true if you are so wound up you can’t tolerate even engaging in relaxing behaviors.

A significant body of research implicates chronic stress in a variety of physical problems, including but not limited to high blood pressure, immune system impairment, sleep disturbances, heart disease, back and body aches, etc.

How is your own nervous system doing these days? If you feel you could use some help in the proper care and maintenance of your nervous system, take a look at the suggestions and resources listed below. Your nervous system – and ultimately all the rest of your body, mind and soul, will thank you!

First Aid for Your Nervous System 1. A regular relaxation practice is absolutely critical to helping your nervous system to retain its resilience and to engage the discharging functions of your parasympathetic nervous system.

Meditation, yoga, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, tai chi or gentle exercise are all wonderful for this. Interpersonal contact that you experience as supportive and comfortable is important as well. These kinds of resources are also very helpful if you find you need to do the deeper work of discharging old activated energy that is held in your nervous system.

2. After a “threat” (stress) event, allow your body to move in whatever way it might need to, without judgment. As

long as it is physically safe for you (and others), let yourself tremble, or shake, or cry, or do whatever it is that your body wants you to do. Do this as soon as it is safely possible after the event, and ideally immediately afterwards.

3. Give yourself plenty of time. The part of our brain that is responsible for the fight or flight response is often referred to as the “reptilian” brain, due to its development early in our evolutionary history. It can be helpful to remember that reptiles move v…e…r…y… s...l...o...w...l...y. Allow a lot of time for your body and nervous system to recover after a stressful event and for baseline resilience to be restored. Don’t rush to get up and move around after an activating event. It’s better to allow the discharge cycle to complete immediately than to have to go back later to try to let the discharge occur.

4. Don’t dismiss your physical reactions. Especially if you’re not practiced in noticing your body sensations, they can seem subtle or hard to identify. Stomach butterflies, electric sensations, urges to move your legs or arms, all need respect and attention. Take time to notice these kinds of sensations and follow them until they dissipate.

Solutions for Anxiety and Depression Today, there are many tools to help decrease physiologic stress in the body, and thereby, decrease and eliminate anxiety disorders as well as depression in children and adults. Integrative Manual Therapy for Childhood Anxiety and Depression

I

n today’s American culture, almost every person experiences anxiety or depression on a regular basis and many of us are medicated in some way to help alleviate some of the pressure. As I sit here writing this article, I am reminded of my own history of childhood anxiety and panic attacks. At the time, anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications were uncommon. But today, they are widely used for adults as well as children. In fact, “Antidepressant use increased for all age groups between 1996 and 2005, including among children, despite a 2004 "black box" warning on antidepressant use in young patients.” (Archives of General Psychiatry, August 2009).

It is amazing to think of our children suffering in this manner. I have a two year old son and he seems so carefree. How do I keep him from being affected by this legacy? How do we prevent all of our children from this type of hardship? In today’s world, there are so many new challenges; a significant increase in behavioral and

learning disorders such as attention deficit and autism, the proliferation of allergies and infectious disorders in our local, national, and global communities, the increased use of pesticides and synthetic fillers in our food, the potential negative effect of genetically modified foods (GMO) which are rampant in the standard American diet yet outlawed in European countries. There are many possible rationales for this increase in childhood anxiety and depression.

As a health practitioner, I see many more children today with anxiety and depression as compared to five years ago.

“It is estimated that 3 percent of children and about 12 percent of teens suffer from depression. The increased awareness of childhood depression and its impact on a child has led to an increase in the use of antidepressants to treat these children.”

(Iannelli, V., 2009) As many of us already know, prevention is the key to a healthy and balanced body and mind. Though prevention is an www.naturalnutmeg.com

In the IMT model, there is an understanding that various organs, when they are in a state of inflammation, can produce certain negative emotions. Anxiety can be produced by the kidneys and adrenal glands as well as some other organs.

Depression can be even more complex because there is endogenous depression (from within the body) and exogenous depression (from outside). Psychotherapy is such an important tool to help manage depression, but so often, it is not enough to make a sustainable change in the person.

Depression may be secondary to emotional trauma and stress in our lives, but it may also be an effect of body dysfunction.

For example, if a person has high levels of mercury in the body, which would be considered endogenous—this elevated level of toxicity may lead to depression as well as fatigue and headaches which are commonly linked with depression. On the other hand, the person may have experienced a physical trauma to their head, such as a car accident—this force can cause significant inflammation of the central nervous system which can manifest as depression, in addition to other related symptoms such as chronic pain.

It is common knowledge in this country that infertility is on the rise today. When women are able to conceive, commonly, the pregnancy and delivery are problemAugust 2010

atic. Often, the baby is born with a ‘failure to thrive’ syndrome where they are underweight and possibly exhibiting respiratory distress. These are the children that are lacking resiliency in life. They may exhibit more allergies, skin issues such as eczema, learning deficits, and so on. Much of this is secondary to a weakened immune system from birth.

In all of these above scenarios, IMT can be used to decrease inflammation, promote circulation and immunity, and decrease overall tension in the affected organs and tissues. For example, if a child is experiencing regular anxiety in the classroom, it may be secondary to inflammation in the head which may have been brought on by an injury or even birth trauma from a long labor. The child may be having a hard time concentrating in the classroom because of tension and inflammation at the frontal lobe (located behind the forehead and involved in cognition and attention).

Often, there is a gut association. Many of these children have a high toxic load in their liver and digestive tract. As a result, it may be challenging to sit still, but also this toxicity can produce anxiety or depression.

In these children, IMT would be focused on decreasing inflammation and promoting normal circulation and drainage to and from the liver and the digestive organs. If the frontal lobe was involved, IMT would

be focused on supporting optimal health of this part of the brain.

Let’s use the head trauma as an example. Consider a child riding in a car and the car is front-ended. Even if the collision is minimal, there is a significant force that enters into the body through the head. This force travels down the spine to the sacrum (located above the buttocks at the bottom of the spine). The sacrum, in this scenario, is shoved downwards—this is referred to as a ‘descended sacrum.’ Though the displacement of the sacrum may only be 1mm, it is substantial because the spinal cord is attached to the sacrum as well as to the brainstem on the inside of the skull.

When the sacrum is displaced, there is a ‘tug-of-war’ on the central nervous system.

The central nervous system which houses our brain and spinal cord is involved in every aspect of the body. Often, when the central nervous system is ‘on fire’ in this way, the child may experience regular anxiety or depression. This displacement can also cause hyperactivity because of the compression at the base of the skull.

The child may experience auditory or visual processing deficits as well as headaches because of this tension. Correcting this pattern of dysfunction is simple— mobilize the sacrum upwards. The challenge is when the problem is chronic.

More often than not, this injury is not recent. For example, with a child, it may be from birth where the head of the baby is repeatedly pushed up against the mother’s pelvic rim during a long delivery. In this situation, it is not enough to just mobilize the spine and sacrum. Preparatory treatment must be focused on decreasing muscle spasm and fascial tissue tension in the pelvis and at the base of the skull.

Further treatment must also be focused on balancing the central nervous system following correction of a descended sacrum.

A typical IMT initial treatment session involves an assessment of all the major organs and tissues in the body, including the nervous system, circulatory system, and immune system. The IMT practitioner will also assess the child’s posture and movement to determine if there are any significant stressors on the spine and head which may be contributing to the child’s challenges. Once the assessment is completed, a comprehensive treatment plan is designed specifically focused on the sites of compromise discovered during the assessment.

This treatment plan would be implemented over the course of multiple sessions.

Nutritional Wellness for Childhood Anxiety and Depression In addition to Integrative Manual Therapy, nutritional wellness can be highly beneficial to support reduction of anxiety and depression in children. Nutritional wellness is most successful when it is a combined approach of dietary intervention and nutritional supplements. One important diet is a gluten elimination diet.

Gluten is considered a ‘pro-inflammatory’ food. This means that when gluten is ingested, it induces further inflammation in the body, specifically in the areas of compromise. Considering the above example of a child with a descended sacrum, gluten may contribute to further inflammation of the central nervous system. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oat. There are many substitutes today for gluten. Unfortunately, many of the lab tests for gluten sensitivity have been found to be inaccurate. The best way to discover whether you or your child has gluten sensitivity is to perform an elimination diet where you eliminate gluten 100% from the diet for 3-4 months and during that time, assess the changes. These changes are not just related to gut function. Remember the possible relationship to the brain—look for all kinds of changes in you and your child.

The easiest way to implement this type of diet is to embrace it as a family.

There are many other forms of elimination diets specific to all types of allergens, such as soy, dairy, nut, and more.

Elimination diets are a wonderful ap-

proach to discovering foods that we may be sensitive to. By eliminating these foods from our diet, we may experience many positive changes.

In addition to elimination diets, nutritional supplements may be beneficial.

Many of us already use nutritional supplements. In today’s era, it is challenging to attain everything we need for a healthy body just from our food. As an example, “official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data shows that calcium content of broccoli averaged 12.9mg per gram of dry weight in 1950, but only 4.4 mg/g dry weight in 2003.” (David, D, et al, 2003) One important supplement is ‘essential fatty acids.’ Essential fatty acids are the basis of our cell walls of every cell in the body, including organs, vessels, nerves, bones, and muscles. Underlying any injury or infection, there is compromise to the wall of many cells. To correct the problem, our body needs to utilize essential fatty acids to repair the cells. These fatty acids are called “essential” because our body does not make them—they must be supplemented through our diet. Unfortunately, we would need to consume a large quantity of cold water fish to gain enough essential fatty acids for even just normal functioning of the body. With the recent rise in farm raised fishing, fish are being ‘produced’ with significantly lower levels of essential fatty acids. Using salmon as an example, wild salmon eat plankton that is rich in essential fatty acids. In farm raised fishing, salmon are often fed grain, which not only is lacking in essential fatty acids,

but also is often pro-inflammatory. Supplementing with cod liver oil is a great way of restoring our body’s ability to repair itself on a cellular level. There are many other important examples of nutritional supplementation and elimination diets.

A Combined Approach of Integrative Manual Therapy and Nutritional Wellness When considering a child with anxiety or depression, often the child is ‘depleted.’

In this common situation, the child’s body needs support on multiple levels. Using Integrative Manual Therapy to restore integrity to the digestive system, the immune system, the central nervous system, and more along with nutritional wellness to replenish the body’s nutrients is a beneficial approach to decreasing anxiety and depression in children. Using IMT and nutritional wellness as a combined approach is an essential component of maintaining optimal health in today’s world. remember as a child, my best friend told me that just washing my apple with water wasn’t good enough. Instead, I needed to use soap as well to get the apple really clean. At the time, I didn’t know what could possibly be on the apple that was bad for me.

Dirt? Worm poop? Those couldn’t be that bad, so I was perplexed. I mean, wasn’t an apple a day supposed to keep the doctor away?

Fast-forward 20 years and I find myself looking at food, and apples, in a whole new light. With talk about the dangers of pesticides used to protect apples while growing, and even discussion about possible negative side effects from genetic modification of seeds to increase crop yield, it’s hard to know if eating anything is actually good for us anymore. Maybe we should just live on encapsulated nutrients instead of food? Isn’t food just a source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and macronutrients anyhow? Why not just forgo real food and simply consume the basics to survive? Because, well, that’d be no fun and we’d inevitably miss out on something in food that could never be replaced by any pill or powder made in a lab.

So, how do we know what’s safe? How do we select the right foods to prevent the development of cancer or even dia-

betes? How do we eat food that actually enhances our health instead of making us sick or diseased?

Can we trust the FDA? Can we trust the USDA? Are they looking out for our best interests or do we need to become more educated? Well, I’d love to be able to tell you that the FDA and the government are always on our side, but I can’t, and I don’t know all the details of why they are or aren’t. What I can tell you is that there is information out there that can help us make the healthiest and safest choices possible when filling our carts at the grocery store or farmer’s market.

Is Organic Food Safer than Conventional?

One of the ways many of us have decided to improve our health is by choosing foods that are grown in an organic manner. Oftentimes we think that organic foods contain no synthetic materials, less or no pesticides, and less bacterial contamination, but that is not always the case.

Bacterial Contamination

By definition of the USDA, who sets the certification programs for organic farming, an organic food, whether it is animal or plant, is one that limits or excludes the use of synthetic materials during production. However, the key word here to note is “limits”. There are actually some synthetic materials allowed in organic foods, which you can access through the USDA website under the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. This includes synthetic sulfur dioxide, which is allowed in wines labeled “made with organic grapes” as long as the content of total sulfite does not exceed 100ppm.

Synthetics are not always bad or harmful however, like the synthetic potassium citrate and sodium phosphate allowed in certain organic foods, as they prevent the food from melting, spoiling or losing its original shape (cheese for example).

Bacterial contamination of organic food, especially fresh produce, has made news headlines during the past few years.

Attention has been focused on bacterial pathogens that are spread via manures, including Salmonella and Escherichia coli. Because many organic farmers rely on animal manures for soil fertility, the safety of organic foods has been questioned. Organic regulations address this issue: Use of manure, especially raw (not composted) manure, on organic fields is restricted by law. These regulations are more restrictive than those that apply to conventional farms. However, there are still cases of contamination in organic produce.

Animal bacterial contamination even in organic meats and poultry is also an issue: According to Consumer Reports, 2007, "Chickens labeled as organic or raised without antibiotics and costing $3 to $5 per pound were more likely to harbor salmonella than were conventionally produced broilers that cost more like $1 per pound. Moreover, most of the bacterial we tested from all types of chicken showed resistance to one or more antibiotics, including some fed to chickens to speed their growth and those prescribed to humans to treat infections."

Pathobiology researchers in Kansas, who recently composed the paper “Niche Marketing Production Practices for Beef Cattle in the United States and Prevalence of Foodborne Pathogens" wrote that, “Studies directly comparing conventional and niche-market production systems for dairy, swine, poultry, and produce have observed that the prevalence of foodborne pathogens was seldom statistically different between production systems, but when differences were ob-

Pesticides As far as pesticide use, organic foods actually do often use certain pesticides in their production. The difference is that these pesticides are biopesticides. Biopesticides are types of pesticides derived from such materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and minerals. In organic farming a common microbial biopesticide used is the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt. Bt is related to a species of bacteria that causes food poisoning and also to the bacterium that causes anthrax (bacillus anthracis). Bt toxin kills only very specific species of insects. Many organic farmers have used Bt for over 50 years as a pesticide to control insects. Bt is also used to control mosquitoes, and other insects that bite and spread disease. According to the EPA (environmental protection agency), Bt products are found to be safe for use in the environment and with mammals. The EPA has not found any human health hazards related to using Bt, and deems it safe enough that it has exempted Bt from food residue tolerances, groundwater restrictions, endangered species labeling and special review requirements. However, not everyone agrees with the EPA.

Carcinogens In terms of eating organic foods to lower our intake of carcinogenic compounds, potentially such as some pesticides, Bruce Ames, a toxicologist and National Science Medal winner, reports that 99.99 percent of the carcinogens we swallow grow naturally in our fruits and vegetables—put there by Mother Nature to fend off the insects, bacteria and fungi. Eating organic food makes one ten-thousandth of a percent difference in our risk for cancer. More concerning cancer risks include obesity (which plagues more and more Americans each day from excessive sugar intake and lack of physical activity) and smoking.

Organically grown vegetables are also found to contain significant concentrations of PCBs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), when assessed by independent research groups. The way to reduce exposure to these contaminants is to peel the outside layer off the item in question. www.naturalnutmeg.com

served, prevalence was typically greater for the niche-market production systems than the conventional production systems. The published literature suggests that the perception of niche-marketed food products being safer and healthier for consumers with regard to foodborne pathogens may not be justified.”

Also, in 2008, researchers in the journal Foodborne Pathogens and Disease reported, “ We found significantly higher seroprevalence of Salmonella and Toxoplasma from ABF [outdoor, antimicrobial-free] herds (54% and 7%, respectively) than conventional (39% and 1%, respectively). Two pigs, both from ABF herds, were found to be seropositive for Trichinella. The results from this preliminary study suggest that all three pathogens were more commonly present in pigs that were reared in an ABF, outdoor, niche-market type of environment than the conventional, indoorreared herds though there were some geographical variation in Salmonella."

Overall, even with organic meats and produce, there are still bacterial safety risks. The best way to protect yourself from these issues is to wash and cook your food, especially meats, thoroughly. Then, thoroughly wash your

hands and all surfaces that were touched by these products. For meats, they must reach internal temperature standards before consumption to ensure any bacteria have been killed. If you have any symptoms of salmonella poisoning for example, such as diarrhea and severe abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of suspected foods, seek medical attention immediately.

The Safest Food Practices Organic foods, although not perfect, do seem to present a somewhat safer option for health than some conventional food items. And they may contain lower amounts of chemicals that increase cancer incidences and occurrences. But, if you can’t afford or don’t have access to organic foods, you can still eat smartly.

No matter what, you still have to choose your food wisely. Some organic foods are quite high in unnecessary sugar and calories that lead to unnecessary weight gain and elevated blood sugars.

When selecting foods, look for those with a good nutritional profile meaning they have a low sugar content, are free of excessive omega-6 fats and no trans fats, and have adequate protein and fi-

ber to keep you more satisfied. With all foods, you should still wash them clean (and with soap, or a natural spray cleaner), and/or cook them to a temperature that kills any dangerous bacteria.

The bottom line is listen to your body and eat foods that support an active lifestyle. If a food does not make you feel well, don’t eat it. But, don’t stress about “hidden dangers” in all of our foods.

Some we have no control over (like the natural carcinogens in vegetables), and others are really not dangerous enough to make a difference in your health.

Karen: Before we talk about the important messages you have for parents and children, tell me about what you learned from a favorite parenting moment.

Dr. Dyer: As a father and grandfather, I’ve been blessed with abundant opportunities to be present with babies. My favorite parenting moment is holding them right out of the womb, cutting the cord, and holding them again. We can learn amazing lessons from observing babies and trying to emulate their joy.

You didn’t come forth into this world to

suffer, to be anxious, fearful, stressful, or depressed. They’ve done nothing to be so happy. Babies don’t work; they have no possessions; they poop in their pants; and they have no goals other than to grow and explore the world. They don’t have teeth or hair, and they’re pudgy and flatulent. How could they possibly be so joyful and easily pleased? They’re in a constant state of love—they’re still in harmony with the Source that intended them here. Be like that baby you once were. You don’t need a reason to be happy…your desire to be so is sufficient.

Karen: What did you learn from your most embarrassing parenting moment?

Dr. Dyer: One time, when I was rushing the kids out of the house for school, I raised my voice at my daughter. She replied, "I wonder if all those people would buy a book from Mr.Positive if they saw the way he talks to his 9-yearold daughter?" Kids are very good at showing you your own behavior. What are you modeling to them?

Karen: When did a lesson you were trying to teach one of your kids take an unexpected turn?

Dr. Dyer: Many times. One of the funniest I can recall happened when my daughter was old enough to complain about how she was being parented. I explained to her that she chose her parents when coming into this world, and if she didn't like the way I parent then she shouldn't have chosen me. She replied, "I chose you? I must have been in a hurry."

Karen: I can relate to that. The other day, I heard my daughter mimicking me while she was ‘disciplining’ her dolls.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t impersonating one of my better parenting moments. Right away I thought, ‘that’s not what I want.’ So, let’s talk about what you believe parents really want for their children.

Dr. Dyer: I think parents who are truly aware of themselves, their thoughts and behaviors and the impression these make upon a child, really want something deeper than the material measures of a successful life portrayed in the media. Over the years of being a parent, and having had the opportunity to ask parents this question, the answers gravitated around a central theme that I believe is as relevant today as was when I first wrote the book. Parents want their children to value themselves, to be selfreliant and independent; to take risks; to be free from stress and anxiety; to live peaceful lives; to celebrate present moments; to value wellness and creativity; and to feel a sense of purpose.

Karen: Is it realistic?

Dr. Dyer: [Parenting is] the toughest job.

The fact is most parents don’t know how to balance what we truly want for our children and the realities we face each day because we have not learned that simple secret ourselves. With kids, you must live by example. If you yourself have not learned how to cultivate inner happiness that can carry you through adversity, you can’t teach that to your children. We want our children to grow into content, high functioning, no-limit adults who can handle life’s challenges without getting so overwhelmed by outside forces or their own emotions that they feel defeated. If this is what you really want for your children then there’s no excuse why it can’t be realistic.

Karen: Let’s talk about “no-limits” because people are likely to misunderstand this concept when related to child rearing.

Dr. Dyer: A no-limit person—child or adult—has no internally imposed limitations and they refuse to allow outsiders to place any limits on them. It’s the same as saying self-actualized, conscious or inner-directed. This is a person who has high levels of self-respect regardless of the situation; they are doers not complainers; they are motivated by higher qualities; they are compassionate and concerned for others; they give to life rather than just seeking out what they can take from life. You can spot a nolimit person easily: They experience joy and inner peace even while everyone

around them is going mad. They are the calm within the storm.

Karen: What prompted the children’s book series?

Dr. Dyer: One of the things I most enjoyed as a parent was reading to my kids at bedtime. Sometimes, after we finished reading we would embellish the story with our own ideas. When I started writing books, I had my children in mind.

I wanted them to have, in one place, some of the most important practices they could choose to adopt for a fulfilled life. The essential message—to help people overcome self-imposed limitations and realize their own magnificence—is a message for everyone, from infancy to old age. I want children to know just how unique and powerful they are, and that everything they need to create happy, successful lives is within them.

Karen: What are some of the lessons taught in these books?

Dr. Dyer: Incredible You! uses vivid illustration and rhyming verse to teach ten ways to let your greatness shine through.

Some of the lessons are sharing the good in you and seeing the good in others; thinking good thoughts; taking care of your mind and body. Unstoppable Me! teaches no-limit thinking using an example and illustration of how a child might apply the lesson in her life. Both of these books have questions at the end for a parent and child to talk through together.

Karen: It’s Not What You’ve Got! takes on the biggies: money and abundance.

How do you portray these concepts so that children understand and embrace them?

Karen: The latest book, No Excuses!, is one I’m using in my home, now. My daughter is four and she already has all kinds of excuses for why she can’t do something. It’s even raised memories from my childhood, being told, “You’re full of excuses.” I try to catch myself and find an appropriate way to respond to the less reasonable excuses she has when I ask her to try a new activity or put away toys.

Dr. Dyer: It’s great that you cultivate that awareness with your daughter because you can change the way you respond to her and change the lesson. In turn, she will learn what I hope this book teaches many children: how to spot how often they use excuses and how excuses can stop them from doing things they really want to do. This book, which adapts concepts from the book Excuses Begone!, tells a story of a boy with a seemingly impossible dream who almost lets excuses get in his way. There are questions to explore with your child to promote insight and understanding.

and safe. The majority of ADHD patients I see go through a mild detox and their hyperactivity calms down, they feel better, and do better in school.

Our body is constantly in the process of removing toxins. In with the good, out with the bad! Our liver and kidneys are the primary organs of toxin removal, known as emunctories. They excrete water and fat-soluble toxins through the urine and stool. The first part of detoxification is to make sure those things are moving. Drinking plenty of water, especially on hot, summer days will ensure good urine flow, and of course making sure your children have daily bowel movements is the first and most essential part of toxin removal. You wouldn’t want to spring clean with the windows closed! Where would all the dust go?

The next part of detoxification is adding substances that will actively remove the offender. You don’t wash your clothes in just water; you add soap, and other spray on detergents to remove the stain from your clothes. We do the same with detoxification, but there are many different strengths of detoxification, and with increasing strengths come increasing risks.

The mildest detoxification is adding detox foods, especially broccoli and cauliflower that contain substances called DIM and I3C that help process

toxins. Infrared saunas, clay baths, and Epsom salt baths are also mild detoxifiers that help remove offenders. More moderate detoxifiers include natural substances such as NAC, calcium-dglucarate, MSM, and silymarin. They are more aggressive substances that work faster to detoxify. The most aggressive of the bunch are chelators, substances that are injected IV (intravenously) to quickly remove toxins: DMSA, DMPS, EDTA to name a few. While quick and effective, they carry the most risk, especially causing depletions of electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper.

Start With: A Healthy Diet While monitoring a school child’s diet can be extremely challenging (if not impossible), this is the place to start protecting your child’s health. In as fun a manner as possible, and without forcing them on her, try introducing your child to vegetables (ideally, raw, with all their nutrients intact), whole fruits (vs. sugary fruit juices), complex carbohydrates, and healthy proteins, including: (1) Baby Carrots (delicious cooked or dipped in honey!): 10% of the antioxidant beta carotene in carrots converts to vitamin A as the body needs it, thus protecting against cancer (especially skin-related) and heart disease; (2) Broccoli (delicious lightly sautéed/steamed, salted, and vegetarian-alternative-buttered): contains cancer-fighting phytochemicals, vitamin C, and beta-carotene; (3) Berries: all are relatively low in sugar, and strawberries and blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants such as vitamins A and C and selenium; (4) Bell Peppers: these

are high in vitamin C but lack the sugar in citrus fruits; (5) Whole Grains: introduce whole wheat vs. white/enriched white flour (if not celiac/allergic to gluten), sugar-free oatmeal, and quinoa (the only complete-protein grain; cooks like rice but faster); (6) Nuts (especially walnuts and almonds): great sources of minerals and essential fatty acids; (7) Beans: healthy sources of protein, complex carbohydrates, and iron; and (8) Fish, Turkey, Chicken, Eggs: low in inflammation-inducing saturated fat, these are valuable sources of protein and many other nutrients critical to growth.

Also, keep in mind that sugar compromises the immune system and is a key culprit in the widespread development of juvenile diabetes. According to Lendon Smith, M.D., a well-known pediatrician, sugar can also cause hyperactivity/ADHD by impacting the midbrain, which controls emotions and the ability to focus. Instead of any kind of sugar, teach your child to love stevia, a sweet leaf that does not impact the blood sugar and has zero calories.

Add: A Nutritional Supplement Regimen Giving your child nutritional supplements can help ensure that she is getting the right growth-promoting nutrients

in the right amounts that she may not be getting from her diet. As you probably already know, if your child doesn’t like it, she won’t eat it, no matter how much better it may make her feel. So, when buying supplements, you might take her along for her opinion or a taste test. Also consider choosing gummy vitamins and other chewables sweetened with xylitol, a natural cavity fighter from strawberries.

Multivitamin Although numerous multivitamins are available for children’s various needs, a complete multivitamin will generally include age-appropriate amounts of antioxidants, minerals, whole vegetable and/or fruit concentrates, and probiotics. Children require ample doses of vitamin D (bone growth; immunity), iron (red blood cell health; organ oxygenation), B-complex (energy; nervous system health), and vitamins A and C (free radical protection; vitamin C is nature’s antihistamine and may shorten the duration of a cold).

Probiotics A strong immune system begins with a healthy digestive system, so don’t overlook this critical component of your child’s daily nutrition regimen (especially if she is on an antibiotic)! A child’s digestive tract (stomach, small and large intestines) is fragile and its flora can be readily thrown off balance by antibiotics, stress (which yields cortisone), and prednisone (a drug form of cortisone), yielding an overgrowth of “bad” bacteria, mold, and yeast/candida with many complex symptoms, including those noted above. When choosing the right child-formulated probiotic for your child, look for one that ideally: (1) is refrigerated (to preserve the live flora); (2) has multiple types of friendly bacteria strains (e.g., lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum/longum/infantis); (3) is enteric coated (to protect the flora from stomach acid, allowing them to be delivered alive to the intestines); (4) contains a pre-biotic that feeds the friendly/”good” bacteria (e.g., FOS, Inulin); (5) contains L-glutamine and NAG (to protect the intestinal mucosal lining); (6) is powdered and flavored; and (7) has at least 3 billion microorganisms. If

your child is lactose or casein intolerant, choose a product that is dairy-free.

Cod Liver Oil (Orange or Mint Flavored) Cod liver oil is a relatively safe source of vitamins A and D. It also provides anti-inflammatory omega-3 essential fatty acids, including DHA, which is critical to children’s brain development.

Pediatricians have long recommended one tablespoon per day for these purposes and to ensure strong bones.

If Your Child Is (Getting) Sick

Digestive Problems: If your child

has any type of mild digestive discomfort, try administering aloe juice, and/ or chamomile or peppermint tea (soothe the stomach/intestines), magnesium (a natural laxative), and/or homeopathic belladonna (stops diarrhea). Mom and Me

A

couple of years ago, I attended a women’s breakfast where the keynote speaker confidently proclaimed her distaste for the phrase “worklife balance.” She proudly referred to the delicate balance of work and home in her life as “work-life integration.”

Sitting in a sea of fashionably suited women, I had to restrain myself from choking on my coffee. I couldn’t imagine a colder word than integration. But I understood the point. Finding the ideal balance is less about an existence of equal parts and more about knowing how to make one work with the other.

I have a personal disdain for another commonly bantered mantra. “Women can have it all, just not all at once.”

A clear statement of the facts, right?

Women can do anything, but we are smart and capable enough to know that when we try to do too much, something suffers.

Before experiencing the full meaning of the words, I thought the sentiment was brilliant.

And then I made the life altering decision to stay home for a few years when my oldest was born.

I immediately loved being mom. I felt honored to take care of my new little cherub. I watched him sleep, nursed round the clock and monitored appropriate amounts of “tummy time.” But I couldn’t shake the aimlessness of my new existence. Days had no beginning, middle or end. The week felt that way too.

Monday became Wednesday and Friday suddenly was no big deal.

I just kept thinking “Women have been doing this since the beginning of time, what is my problem?!”

I tried to dig deeper, to find my own personal well of selflessness that I was sure, as a woman, I must have. I knew this new role was the most important of my life. But I still felt lost. Happy and lost, but not happily lost.

I found myself constantly looking. In search of something. Sometimes I would catch myself staring at other women.

Looking for clues on where to find my-

self. The old me, the new me, some version of me.

The new me had discovered depths of love I’d never known possible. The new me also had a razor-like intensity. A life was in my hands all day every day.

Nothing else mattered.

But the old me was still in there. Curious if there was some sort of mommy doctrine that said you could never again enjoy a full night of uninterrupted sleep or drink a cup of coffee alone in silence.

I wondered if it was abnormal to hope a former colleague was calling, every time the phone rang, desperately needing my help for something other than changing diapers.

So I did what crazed people throughout the generations have done: I began talking to myself. Through writing. I made a vow to myself to use one of my son’s naps each day to write. One hour to write and dream and work on where I wanted to go.

Slowly writing about the worried, intense energy of caring for my little one fueled a sense of personal purpose too.

Wishes and dreams that had been tucked away through the frenzy of professional endeavors and setting up life surfaced.

Only now I had a special perspective. I knew how fast life zoomed. I experienced it firsthand each day as I watched my son grow. Suddenly, “later” seemed like an answer for the laundry and not life.

That hour is still part of my routine most days almost seven years later. Sure there are days when an hour is really more like thirty minutes. When my best intentions are superseded by phone calls or volunteering at school or freelance projects. And other days when I start to lose the will. When it feels indulgent and silly to pour my insides out on the page.

But now I know where to find myself. Writing helps me to reach into the unknown while cherishing today. To appreciate what I have, even when I’m not sure what “having it all” really means. To find the courage to be Mom and me.

o say that Hyssop has a timely message for humanity and for me personally right now would be a gross understatement. Collectively, humanity is at a critical juncture. Both on a personal level and globally, we need to take inventory of our values, our possessions, our relationships and our responsibilities -basically everything- and make some serious choices. What is most valuable to us and worth keeping? What is no longer working and needs to be scrapped?

According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Five Element paradigm, the lungs are paired with the large intestines and are associated with the Metal Element (or more accurately, Phase). The Metal Phase represents evaluation and release- that is separating the pure from the impure- and eliminating what is left.

It is crucial that we rid ourselves of that which no longer serves us in order to create space for new energies that will match our higher frequency. If we fail to do so, we become bogged down emotionally with attachments that drain us, and we find that instead of owning our possessions, our possessions own us. We become so hampered with responsibilities that are not ours that we have no energy left with which to take response-ability for what we must, such as a change of course or direction.

The lungs are also where we hold onto grief that has not been completely released. When we are burdened, whether from sadness, emotional constraint, or a resistance to necessary surrender, we can begin to fear healthy release. We may come to equate pure space with emptiness and loneliness instead of using that void as a starting point for Divine inspiration and creation. The analogy is also made in TCM that our lungs take in the breath of heaven, that is to say air, our physical connection to the intangible or the Divine. The Divine is Universal Truth

and Love; a healthy ability to discern what is truly healthful to us and to disengage with what is not is a path to purifying our soul.

Many references hold true that Hyssop purifies the soul, helps one break old patterns of unhealthy thoughts or behavior, like anger, addictions and lack of forgiveness. What is a grudge, dependence, or resentment? Simply stated, unhealthy emotional patterns are based in judgment and often rooted in our inability to let go of our own imperfections enough to have true compassion for ourselves and others. What is forgiveness? The ability to release a judgment that we have been holding onto -whether it is toward ourselves or someone else- is a letting go, a surrendering. Breathing deeply, we inhale the Divine into our body and exhale the emotional weight we no longer need to carry.

On a physical level, Hyssop is one of the premier herbs for assisting the lungs in their ability to breathe deeply. It has an expectorant quality that will purge phlegm, but more specifically will thin mucous, making it more watery and easier to dislodge. Often taken as a tincture or syrup for bronchial complaints, herbalists may combine Hyssop with Mullein, Thyme, Licorice, Basil or other herbs that loosen phlegm, circulate energy in the chest and soothe coughs. A hot infusion of fresh or dried Hyssop herb is an effective remedy for the recent onset of colds or flu because it promotes a light perspiration that helps the body rid toxins through the pores and lowers a fever.

The crushed, fresh herb spread over bruises and contusions will help them to heal faster, and an infusion applied topically is helpful for achy joints. Steam from a hot infusion of Hyssop can help to soothe inflammations of the ear; its camphor-like aroma belies its ability to aromatically open areas of obstruction.

In fact, the fragrance of Hyssop was once

valued more highly than Lavender essential oil.

The herb is considered very safe; however it can stimulate the uterus and shouldn’t be utilized by pregnant women without professional guidance.

Some sources suggest that it should not be used by children or by anyone with epilepsy because it may be a mild neurotoxin. Warnings that the herb can raise blood pressure indicate that it should never be used by anyone with hypertension. The essential oil (EO) has received much scrutiny due to the presence of the toxic ketone pinocamphene and cautions abound that advise consumers to dilute Hyssop EO in carrier oil to a concentration not exceeding 5% potency.

This logic does not take into account the thousands of trace chemicals and chemotypes that are also present in a pure steam-distilled, single source product which create a natural balance. In my opinion, a single chemical extracted and given at high concentrated doses does not represent Hyssop as a whole. I personally use several drops at a time of a very high quality, medicinal-grade Hyssop EO undiluted directly on my skin and have never had any adverse effects. In fact, I have several case studies that show the use of this high-grade oil, applied neat to the top or back of the head can help balance hypo and hypertension. Recently, one of my students was able to come off his high blood pressure medication after only 2 months of applying 4-5 drops of the oil this way on a daily basis.

Hyssop can help restore the nerves and soothe grief by generating strength, promoting clarity of thought, relieving depression and easing chest tightness. The judgment we attach our process when we are dealing with unpleasant emotional states is needless and causes us to tighten up, hold our breath and run a hamster wheel of worry. We would serve our higher self better by not succumbing to the temptation to be so internally harsh.

Once again, deep and calm breathing helps to soothe the body, calm the mind and release emotional constraint. This release is a sacrifice of unnecessary attachments such as objects, emotions and relationships that no longer serve the highest good.

Hyssop, besides being regarded as an ancient mystical herb, ritually used for purging and purifying, has also been

shown to inhibit many pathogens, including a modern plague, AIDS. Some recent studies have shown that the herb inhibits the replication of HIV and were not harmful to uninfected cells. It is believed that the high content of caffeic acid, certain tannins and some unidentified high molecular weight compounds are the active compounds in Hyssop that are generating this promising research.

Interestingly, Hyssop also shows some potential in the treatment of liver-related disease, including all forms of Hepatitis.

In TCM, the Liver is where we energetically store emotions such as resentment and anger as well as our repressed feelings and unarticulated personal expression. Holding these patterns of stagnation can lead to a plethora of physical and emotional problems.

It is necessary for humanity to stop waiting for others to take responsibility for our own lives or the condition of the world today. Spiritual rebirth is from a place of Purity, and Purity comes from sacrificing that which we have outgrown.

We must take inventory at all levels and begin purging superfluous attachments in order to start moving forward. Inspired by the clean and uncluttered space we open up, we can allow the Divine to enter and co-create the World we envision. This is Hyssop‘s message.

Ear Acupuncture for Addiction

A

cupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine where specific points on the body are stimulated with fine needles, magnets or other means, with the goal of balancing Qi, the body's innate energy. Auricular acupuncture is a specific subcategory, where only points on the ear are utilized. In traditional Chinese medicine, the ear is a map of the body, so that by stimulating points on the ear, the whole body can be affected.

Addiction is a whole body experience, and so it seems intuitive that treating the whole person with a systemic therapy like acupuncture could offer a lot of benefit. Addiction can often be to medications or other drugs, alcohol, caffeine or cigarettes, but also to foods, particularly sugar. Quitting any of these substances can be difficult and in the case of some pharmaceuticals, dangerous,

without support. Auricular acupuncture has become a medically accepted way to support detoxification and promote compliance with abstaining from addictive substances without the aid of other medications.

In the mid-1970s, Dr. Michael Smith, a physician at Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Bronx, New York, developed a set of auricular acupuncture points as a way to support drug detoxification. By 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was founded to promote the use of auricular acupuncture as a drug-less alternative for addiction treatment. Now there are over 10,000 healthcare professionals, over 700 healthcare clinics in the United States and an estimated 2,000 sites around the world offering the NADA treatments.

The NADA protocol has developed from Dr. Smith's study and research to be an excellent means of supporting detoxification, using only five points on each ear. The treatments typically last about forty minutes and can be done with the patient sitting or laying down. All the patients receive the same treatment, 5 small acupuncture needles in each ear.

Patients often report feeling “energized” and “lighter” after a treatment. Practitioners have found that the NADA protocol improves program retention, reduction in cravings, anxiety, sleep disturbances and need for other medications.

The acupuncture points used in the NADA protocol each have significance and facilitate balance in the body.

Shen Men “Spirit gate” is known to help calm and relax. It is excellent to reduce anxiety and nervousness, often associated with withdrawal.

Kidney In Traditional Chinese medicine, the kidney is a source of energy. This point is also used to support willpower and reduce fear as well as support detoxification.

Liver Imbalance in the liver in Traditional Chinese medicine can be a source of anger and aggression. Also, supportive of repairing liver function and detoxification, the liver point is to help heal emotional and physical damage.

Lung The immune system as well as the emotion of grief is associated with the lung. This point facilitates letting go as well as improving the whole system.

Much research has been and continues to be done on the NADA points for detoxification. Yale recently did a study showing that patients receiving treatments had better compliance and were less likely to relapse when in detoxification programs for cocaine.

While acupuncture is certainly establishing itself as a useful tool against addiction, the individual's attitude and behavior are equally as important as well as support, including counseling or self help groups. Supporting the body and establishing balance helps break bad habits and promote better decisions.

Oil Spill Having Catastrophic Impact on Ocean Ecosystems

The TEDx conference on the Oil Spill in Washington, D.C. (held on June 28) featured a full-day of world renowned speakers on oil science, conservation, and the future of energy. During the day’s discussions, one powerful statement seemed to come through: the decision to use oil dispersants, which are themselves highly toxic derivatives of oil, may have been misguided. The dispersants are creating a toxic ocean soup that can’t be separated into disparate parts. The oil, dispersants and sea are now like permanently mixed salad dressing. As a result, the dispersants and oil mix will be absorbed into all nodes of the ocean ecosystems, creating catastrophic impacts for ocean wildlife.

Dr. Susan Shaw, a marine toxicologist and head of the Marine Environmental Research Institute said the dispersants will have a major impact on marine life. More than 1/3 of all ocean mammals are in danger of going extinct. Each ocean animal is already loaded with chemical compounds.

Even among the U.S. human population, chemical compounds are found at a much higher rate, some 10-40 times higher, than in Europe. “We have looser regulations than the E.U. In the U.S., most chemicals aren’t regulated properly. Each year, an additional 20,000 new chemicals are created and go through minimal review process before they are released and used in products.”

Blue Ocean Institute Dr. Carl Safina, a prominent ecologist and president of the Blue Ocean Institute, said the use of dispersants means that “we can’t clean, touch, or deal with this huge mess. We can’t

suppress what’s going on.” Dispersants have been used to “hide the body” of the oil spill.

Safina thinks the spill will be catastrophic for marine life. He got very emotional talking about a dolphin seen by a fisherman. Apparently, the dolphin was spurting oil from its blowhole. “The dolphin came up to the boat, which they apparently never do, as if to ask for help.”

He called the spill a “hemispheric issue that will have enormous biological effects.” Safina was highly critical of the “lack of response plan and equipment.” He also said it was great that birds are getting cleaned, but then they are sent back to the oil slicked ocean. “It’s like cleaning up someone coming out of a burning house and then sending them back in.” Safina was highly critical of BP, arguing that “this was not an accident, but negligence.” He concluded that people are still using stone age-energy technology.

Call and write to the President and your Congress people, tell them to stop deep water drilling, and beg them not to approve Arctic drilling (BP is scheduled to start drilling there this fall). Sylvia Earle says, “There are some places you should not drill, period.”

Nearly everything is made from oil, made by machinery dependent on oil, and transported by oil-based fuel.

Send money to the Nature Conservancy, Oceana, Greenpeace, NRDC, Sierra Club, or any of the established and worthy organizations that are trying to mitigate this crisis and/or push for clean, renewable energy.
