I

f there’s one quality that stands out in my mind to describe someone who is highly successful in their business, career or life it would be consistency. Of course there are many other qualities needed to accomplish big dreams and goals, but consistency is one that seems to take precedence. In my study of wildly successful people, one of the characteristics that I found they all had in common was that they developed a solid plan for success, knew what they had to do and most importantly, did it on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. They practiced consistency to the extreme.

Whether we want to admit it or not, as creatures of habit, we all like, expect and appreciate consistency. When we learn or experience something new, we expect to be able to apply that knowledge on a consistent basis. As you read this magazine, look through and examine each section. What makes each section different but also the same? Where is the table of contents? Where are the feature stories? How do you know that the letters to the editor or the publisher’s letter are in the front of your favorite magazine or that editorials are in the back of your favorite newspaper? It’s all based on consistency.

Take weight loss for example. We all know that losing weight takes time and it is the effect of a consistent effort to exercise, eat right and change your lifestyle on a daily basis. You may not see the results on a day to day basis, but one day you realize that your pants are a little looser and you start to like what you see in the mirror. How quickly this happens is determined by how consistent you are every day to eat healthy meals and exercise.

The following are a few examples of how a consistent approach can maximize your performance and accelerate the rate with which you achieve any goal: * Consistently show up on time; * Consistently tell the truth and do the right thing; * Consistently honor your commitments; * Consistently go above and beyond your expectations; * Consistently take action and avoid excuses and procrastination; * Consistently set your goals for each week.

Consistency is great because people like predictable things. Family, friends, co-workers and customers feel comfortable when they can rely on you to do exactly what they think you will do and have done in the past. But as we know, life often gets in the way and we realize that we have stopped being consistent and doing the things we need to do on a daily basis to reach our goals. So, what to do? As long as you’ve realized it, that’s half the battle! Take some time to think about what you were doing on a consistent basis in the past that helped you reach some of your goals. Then, implement some of those strategies now and see where it takes you.

M

y advice for growing old is to do quite the opposite: grow young, instead. Aging is not the end of the world, and actually comes with benefits. I always remember the words of George Halas, the owner of the Chicago Bears football team. When he was well into his 80s, a friend found him in his office on Sunday and asked him why, at his age, he was working on a Sunday. His response, “It’s only work if there’s someplace else you’d rather be.”

Just stop and think about this for a moment: how can you age if your concept of time is lost? I know from my experience as a physician that the healthiest state one can be in is the state in which you are doing something that makes you lose track of time. In the operating room I have no sense of time or self; I am in a trance. I believe that in the moments we let our innate creativity take over, our physiology gives the body a profound message.

The sad part is too many people wait until they are told they have a limited amount of time left to live before they start living their chocolate ice cream.

That expression comes from one of our children who, when I asked him what he would do if he had fifteen minutes left to live,

said, “I’d buy a quart of chocolate ice cream and eat it.” What I had to learn is that we each have our own flavor and brand of chocolate ice cream. I have letters from people who moved, taken off their ties, signed up for violin lessons and did all the things they wanted to do before they died. So they were not denying their mortality but simply enjoying their lifetime, and their letters often end with, “I didn’t die and now I am so busy I am killing myself. Help, where do I go from here?” I tell them to take a nap because they are burning up and not out.

Now let me share some of the things I have learned from 90-year-olds. One I shall never forget is a woman who, in her nineties developed breast cancer and gall stones. She was quite upset with God for doing this to her at her age but accepted the surgery and moved on in her life. I asked her to join our cancer support group because I knew she had lessons to teach us about survival behavior. One day when everyone in the group was caught up in their fears and what problems the future held I turned to her for help and asked, “What are you afraid of?” After several minutes of silence she sat up and said, “Oh, I know! Driving on the parkway at night.” That resolved everyone’s issue as we went from fear to laughter.

I have also learned to not keep family problems from aging parents. When I would call my 90-year-old mother to ask how she was, she would instead focus on the problems of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would focus on advising and assisting them to overcome their problems, giving her a sense of meaning and making her feel healthy. So use the wisdom of the aged, do not hide your problems from them and let them guide you.

I loved it when I asked my mother what advice she had for seniors that I was going to lecture to. She said, “Tell them to lie a lot.” I asked how that would help and she said, “If you tell people how you really feel they’ll put you in a nursing home. So lie about it.”

To survive we all need to have a sense of meaning in our lives, and express our emotions, including anger, when we are not treated with respect. We need to make our own therapeutic choices, ask for help when we need it, respond to our feelings when making choices, maintain an authentic life and say no to what we do not want to do.

Essentially, we need to find our way of expressing love while keeping a childlike sense of humor. I ask seniors how they can

die laughing. The answers relate to having accomplished what we are all here to accomplish: serving the world in a unique way, rather than a way imposed by others. My father literally died laughing as my mother told wonderful stories about their early relationship.

When my father was tired of his body he said to my mother, “I need to get out of here.” That is when we all gathered and made his transition an unforgettable one, giving the surviving family a different feeling about death.

My father-in-law was a great teacher, too. He lived to be 97 in a body rendered quadriplegic by a fall twenty years prior.

When I asked him for advice for the elderly he said, “Tell them to fall on something soft.” A few days later he said to me. “It doesn’t always work. They stood me up in therapy and I fell on my wife and broke her leg. So tell them to just fall up.” I thought that was a joke until the evening he told us he was tired of his body, refused his dinner, evening vitamins and died that night. As far as I am concerned he just fell up. When love is involved and guilt is not a part of dying, how easy it can be to leave at the appropriate time; it is easier, then, for your loved ones to leave your bedside.

Many years before my father-in-law died, he developed a multitude of symptoms, was unable to eat and was close to death. When a new nursing home was built near our house, I said I was going to move him so we could be close to him in his final week of life.

He agreed, and within a few days after his move, he was smiling and eating. I asked him, “How come you’re not dying anymore?” He answered, “I was dying to make the people in the other nursing home happy. They were tired of taking care of me.” He lived for many years after that.

Again it shows us how important our connections and relationships are to other living things.

We know the benefits of people having pets, but even plants and goldfish can prolong survival when they give us meaning.

In one nursing home study they put plants in all the rooms but only half the residents were told the plants were their responsibility to water and care for. The others were told they were simply room decorations.

Those who were given responsibility lived an average of six years longer.

Let me close with two simple techniques for knowing what the aged are thinking without having to verbalize things they do not want to share. One is to ask, “How would you feel if placed in a totally white room?” and “What is your favorite animal and why?”

When a senior is tired of living or physically exhausted the white room is a spiritual sanctuary they are happy to be in because there is no stimulation and they can rest there. When there is still an active life force they will want to leave, redecorate or put in a picture window.

The description of one’s favorite animal is always related to one’s feeling about one’s self. So an active meaningful descrip-

tion also speaks about the same thing in that person’s life and self. When there is no animal, life or energy in their choice they are ready to move on to become dreamless, unalive and perfect again. Please remember that leaving our bodies is a therapeutic decision at some point. When we leave we do not take our afflictions with us. That is another topic we can discuss in another issue; related to near death experiences.

Gut’s Kingdom

By Eileen C. Comia, MD The following is an excerpt from a chapter written by Dr. Eileen Comia from the soon to be released book: “Essential Remedies for Women’s Health.” The chapter entitled “Gut’s Kingdom” gives an in-depth look at gastrointestinal function in women.

T

here is no other organ in the body that takes as much notice from us as the stomach. We personify the stomach in our everyday lives, as exemplified by expressions like “butterflies in my stomach” (anxiety), “can’t stomach the person” (anger), and “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” (love). I therefore argue that the stomach and intestines, collectively called the GUT, are the “seat of emotion,” not the brain. Moreover, the precursors of neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain that can get out of balance and cause mood disorder) originate from the gut. I further fancy that the gut is a “kingdom” that should be supported and venerated.

To refresh your memory - The gastrointestinal tract, in layman’s term the GUT, is comprised of the mouth (oropharynx), throat (pharynx), esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines (colon), rectum, anus, liver, and pancreas. The spleen and the rest of GALT (gut associated lymphoid tissue) control the gut’s immune system.

Gut Microbiome – the “people of the kingdom” Aside from the anatomical structures of the gut, there are the organisms (microbiome) that make up the “people” of the kingdom.

The ruler of the kingdom is the beneficial/friendly or resident bacteria. It is now believed that resident bacteria maintain a symbiotic relationship with the host body (the “kingdom”) where each gain benefits from the other. To preserve peace in the kingdom, there should be a predominance of the good bacteria (the “king”) and only a few colonies of the bad bacteria and yeast (the “subordinates”). This is the normal balance of gut flora - lots of good bacteria, less of the bad guys (pathogenic bacteria).

At birth, a newborn’s gut is sterile. As the baby passes through the mother’s birth canal, bacteria starts colonizing the baby’s gut 10

from oral to anal direction. Preservation of normal gut flora maintains the integrity of the gastrointestinal lining, protects the host from harmful bacteria, promotes intestinal motility (meaning they make the bowels move normally). “Germ-free “ animals were found to have vitamin deficiencies, increased susceptibility to infectious disease, poorly developed immune system, and lacking of natural immunity to bacterial infection. In fact, studies have shown that by age two, babies born by cesarean section are five times more likely to have allergies to common household allergens than those born naturally. It is also known that the mother’s dietary supplementation of probiotics prevent allergies in allergy-prone babies.

Normal gut flora contains about 109 to 1012 microorganisms per gram of colonic contents; and is comprised of about 500 species of bacteria. There are 3 different kinds of bacteria in terms of oxygen consumption: obligate aerobes need oxygen to survive, obligate anaerobes are poisoned by oxygen, and facultative anaerobes can grow with and without oxygen because they can metabolize energy aerobically and anaerobically. There are other subtypes but for simplification, these are what you need to know. Bacteria from the stomach to jejunum (second part of small intestines) are comprised mostly of aerobes and facultative anaerobes. Bacteria from the ileum (3rd part of small intestines) to cecum (first part of large intestines) are mostly anaerobic (Bacteroides, Lactobacilli, Clostridia) whereas bacteria in the rest of the large intestines are mostly Bacteroides and Bifidobacteria). Yeast (also called fungus) organisms thrive in anaerobic environment and are considered commensal organisms.

Beneficial bacteria in our gut break down undigested polysaccharides (fiber) into glucose (sugar) and are eventually absorbed into the bloodstream. However, in the presence of low oxygen states, yeast and bacteria ferment glucose producing gas or flatus. This is why people with maldigestion coupled with low friendly bacteria experience a lot of bloating, flatus and abdominal pain called Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Aside from assisting in digestion, bacteria also synthesize certain vitamins and nutrients: such as Vitamin K2 which is known

to protect the heart, prevent osteoporosis and cancer; Biotin which is involved in cellular processes that basically convert your food into energy; and Vitamin B12 and folate (Vitamin B9) which are very important in methylation (process by which a gene’s behavior is altered) and detoxification (physiologic removal of toxins from the body). Only certain bacteria that live in the gut of animals are able to produce Vitamin B12 that is useful to humans. Therefore, the plant-based form of vitamin B12 is insufficient supplementation for humans especially those who are vegan or vegetarian. Since vitamin B12 helps absorb folic acid, people who avoid eating meat are likely to be deficient in B12 and folic acid as well. The enzyme responsible for activating folic acid to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is known as MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). With the popularity of MTHFR testing in young women, I am finding that mutations are not uncommon in this population. MTHFR mutations are associated with Spina Bifida and neural tube defects; and MTHFR deficiency causes accumulation of homocysteine in the body called Homocysteinemia which is associated with heart disease and stroke.

Therefore, a word of advice to young women who are vegan or vegetarian - please have adequate supplementation of activated B12 or Methylcobalamin and activated folic acid such as methyltetrahydrofolate and folinic acid. You can find supplements that have these two B vitamins and Vitamin B6; and in fact, there is a prescription medication that has all of them. All three B vitamins are necessary for proper methylation and to decrease homocysteine.

Emerging studies have shown that our gut bacteria have more genes than humans themselves and that the diversity of bacteria you have in your gut may dictate your health. In addition, “crosstalk” between gut microbiome and immunity and metabolic processes may be disrupted by modern lifestyle, diet, overuse of antibiotics causing inflammation and chronic illness.

Let us go back to our “kingdom” analogy. The ruler of the kingdom is the beneficial bacteria, and the subordinates are the pathogenic bacteria and yeast. What happens when the king is overthrown by the subordinates? You develop Gut Dysbiosis; and in allopathic medicine language it is called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO. This is described as an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeast and deficiency of beneficial bacteria. Causes of bacterial overgrowth are (1) Antibiotics, especially broad-spectrum; (2) Acid reducers like H2 blockers (Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid, etc.)

and PPI’s (Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex, etc); (3) Toxins especially heavy metals (mercury, lead, aluminum), pesticides and other xenobiotics. Toxins from our environment and antibodies against DPPIV disable the digestive enzyme DPPIV or dipeptidylphosphatidyltransferase IV. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down proline-rich containing dietary proteins such as gluten and casein (dairy). Dysfunctional DPPIV leads to maldigestion of peptides gluten and casein and the consequential accumulation of gluteomorphin (or gliadorphin) and casomorphin in the blood stream. Dr. William Shaw, in his book entitled, “Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD,” elaborates that “these peptides react with opiate receptors in the brain and mimic the effects of opiate drugs like heroin and morphine. These undigested proteins are associated with gastrointestinal, neurological, and neuro-developmental disorders” including autism. In fact, “Dr. Reichelt in Norway, Dr. Cade at the University of Florida, and other found that urine samples from people with autism, PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder), Celiac Disease and schizophrenia contained high amounts of the casomorphin peptide. These peptides could also be elevated in other disorders such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and depression based on anecdotal reports of symptom remission after exclusion of wheat and dairy.”

Natural Mucosal Barrier – the “castle” Before I get carried away, I will bring you back again to the “kingdom” analogy.

This time let me describe to you the “castle” or the natural mucosal barrier of the gut.

Lining the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract are glandular epithelial cells and goblet cells that secrete mucus. The function of the intestinal lining is to allow: (1) Properly digested fats, proteins, and starches to pass through and enter the bloodstream; (2) Chloride, potassium, magnesium, sodium and free fatty acids to diffuse through intestinal cells, (3) Amino acids, fatty acids, glucose, mineral, and vitamins to cross through cells by active transport. Between the epithelial cells are tight junctions called desmosomes.

These structures “seal” the spaces between mucosal cells that line the gut. They are rich in sulfate molecules which are sticky and keep the cells stuck together. Hereditary low levels of sulfate lead to “leaky gut” or Intestinal Permeability. This condition is caused by disruption in tight junctions of the intestinal lining cells that lead to hyperpermeability. When cells are farther apart

larger food substances are allowed to enter the blood stream causing antibody production and hyperallergenicity. It is “implicated in the pathogenesis of several acute and chronic pediatric disease entities” including inflammatory bowel disease, type I diabetes, allergies, asthma, and autism. Causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome are: (1) Low levels of sulfate from heredity; (2) Toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, and toxins from pathogens; (3) Dysfunctional DPPIV causing incomplete digestion of gluten and casein (a vicious cycle); (4) Other food sensitivities (IgG based); (5) Bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic infection (gastroenteritis); (6) Zinc deficiency; and (7) Medications such as antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin, Aleve and Advil. Medical conditions associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome are: autoimmune disease, Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, hives, acnes, allergies, arthritis, autism, intestinal infections, pancreatic insufficiency, Ulcerative Colitis, Giardiasis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Eczema, Psoriasis, liver dysfunction, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, food allergies/sensitivities.

Gastrointestinal Immune System – the “soldiers” I name the gastrointestinal immune system, the “soldiers”. The major function of the gut’s immune system is to protect the host from pathogens or invaders. T lymphocytes (or T cells) and B cells are located in lymphoid organs (liver and spleen) and peripheral lymph nodes. T cells are either Th1 or Th2 cells. Th1 cells are responsible for cellular immunity and direct T cells and macrophages to fight viruses, parasites and yeast. Th2 cells, on the other hand, are responsible for humoral immunity and create antibodies to neutralize foreign invaders outside the cell. B cells produce antibodies: IgE (the Air Force), the IgG (the Reserves), IgM (the Marines), and IgA (the Navy).

In a normal healthy immune system, there is a balance between Th1 and Th2 activity; meaning, Th1 can switch to Th2 and vice versa. Inability to switch to TH1 leads to chronic infection with yeast, parasites and viruses causing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

autism and cancer. Th1 to Th2 skewing or immune dysregulation can be caused by medications and toxins such as heavy metals (mercury) and pesticides.

Intrinsic Nervous System - the “king’s advisors” aka the CIA Here comes the most interesting feature of the gastrointestinal tract. The gut is the only organ in the body that contains an intrinsic nervous system that is able to

mediate reflexes in the complete absence of input from the brain or spinal cord. We have more nerve cells in the gut than in the entire remainder of our peripheral nervous system.

This is the reason for Dr. Michael Gershon’s book entitled; “The Second Brain” and I call this intrinsic nervous system of the gut as “the king’s advisors, a.k.a. CIA”. The “law of the intestine” or “peristaltic reflex” is attributed to the local nervous mechanism.

When the bowel distends with pressure, the bowel muscles contract and relax in a coordinated descending wave from the

esophagus to the anus. Moreover, precursors of neurotransmitters (“chemicals” in our brain that get out of balance and cause mood disorder) all come from the gut! The gastrointestinal tract is profoundly affected by endogenous and exogenous opioids.

The gut is the “second brain”, which is somewhat independent of, but, interactive with the brain in the cranium. The gut is a “chemical warehouse” of neurotransmitter precursors. Ninety five percent of the body’s serotonin is made in the bowel. The gut influences the brain 90% of the time, and the brain influences the gut only 10% of the time. Therefore, people with long-standing gut issues are likely to have mental instability and psychiatric illness! Corollary to this, a healthy gut leads to a healthy brain and a healthy body. If we keep our gut healthy, we can: (1) Most likely stay away from infectious diseases; (2) Avoid chronic illnesses and allergy symptoms ; (3) Keep our mood stable as our brains will be happier and smarter; (4) Feel stronger and healthier as we get adequate nutrition.

For women, a healthy gut also means: (1) A healthy menstrual period (normal bleeding, no dysmenorrhea, and minimal menopausal symptoms), (2) A healthy urinary tract (less likely to have bladder infections and chronic interstitial cystitis); (3) A healthy hormonal balance (normal thyroid and adrenal function).

In the remainder of the chapter, I discuss pertinent specialty laboratory tests to assess gut function and how to heal the gut with diet and supplementation.

E

ach of us has been given a unique gift or talent that we bring to this world.

When engaged in this activity, passion, joy, and inner fulfillment abound. By combining our unique gift with the desire to service humanity in some way, we can live our life’s purpose. When living life on purpose, joy and financial abundance flow into one’s life experience.

Millions of people settle for jobs that they dislike. A recent State of the American Workplace Report found that 70 percent of Americans are not satisfied at work. Considering that most people spend their adult life either at work or asleep, we are in danger of becoming a nation of grumpy people.

I recently met a woman in a coffee shop whose cousin was diagnosed with a terminal illness. After receiving the diagnosis, her cousin decided to quit his high-stress job and experience as much joy as possible every day. “He sees the world differently now. He notices how hard people work and how unhappy they are,” she stated. Similar stories of personal transformation following life-threatening illness are not uncommon, because such intense adversity can force us back into alignment with what really matters: joy and well-being. We can, however, free our minds without having to experience such hardship.

Is fear holding you back from a purpose-filled life? If you knew that you could not fail, would you leap knowing the net would appear? These are important questions to ponder. Fear is one of the biggest blocks to work through, but overcoming it will change your life.

A career change may be what is needed for some people to feel fulfilled, but for others, it may not be their journey to quit and start over. They may have started their career with passion, drive, and excitement, but no longer experience it. For these individuals,

they must make the decision to start thinking differently about their job. Everyone can bring purpose into his or her life even without a career change.

The mind is more powerful than we can imagine. Our thoughts become our beliefs and our beliefs ultimately become our reality. How do you think and speak about your job? Do you often complain about it? The more attention that you give something, the stronger it grows. Begin today to appreciate what you have and be eager to see what your future can hold. As you begin to transform your perspectives, the job will take care of itself. Your actions will come into alignment and guide you toward a career that you love.

First Steps to Create The Work You Love Step 1: Change Your Thoughts Whether you want to change careers or not, the first step begins within. Your thoughts and emotions have a profound influence on your daily life experience.

Begin today to change the way you speak and think about your job. Shift the focus from what you do not like, to what you do. Abandon all of your negative thought patterns about your job. This is perhaps the most difficult, but most important step.

If seeking a career change, envision what you would love to do. What is your special talent and how can you use it to better serve humanity? Start brainstorming ideas. Do you need to go back to school?

Here, it may be beneficial to work with a life-coach to help you create a goal and action plan backed by powerful intention and belief.

Step 2: Write Down a One-Year Goal If you were living your ideal life a year from today, how would it look, feel? Write a specific description of your life a year from now. Include as many senses as possible.

When finished, observe. If you see yourself joyful, what can you do to create joy in your life now?

Step 3: Visualize and Feel the Changes You Wish to See Once you have a specific description of what you want to do or how you want your life to be, begin to visualize yourself in an actualized state. Like watching a movie in your mind, see yourself living your dream and generate as many positive feelings as you possibly can. Commit to visualize daily.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

You cannot change the past, but you can begin to create your future by choosing thoughts, emotions, and actions that are in alignment with what you truly desire. Life is not about luck, but alignment. Begin today by focusing on feeling good and seeing your life as you want it to be. Follow the above steps and experience firsthand your ability to create the work you love. You can do it.

Empathic Illnesses: Do You Absorb Other People’s Symptoms?

E

mpathic illnesses are those in which you manifest symptoms that are not your own. Many patients have come to me labeled “agoraphobic” with panic disorders, chronic depression, fatigue, pain, or mysterious ailments that respond only partially to medications or psychotherapy. Some were nearly housebound or ill for years. They’d all say, “I dread being in crowds. Other people’s anger, stress, and pain drain me, and I need a lot of alone time to refuel my energy.” When I took a close history of all these patients I found that they were what I call “physical empaths:” people whose bodies are so porous they absorb the symptoms of others. I relate because I am one. Physical empaths do not have the defenses that others have to screen things out. As a psychiatrist, knowing this significantly changed how I treated these patients. My job became teaching them to center and protect themselves, set healthy boundaries, and let go of energy they picked up from others.

To determine if you are a physical empath take the following quiz. Am I a Physical Empath? Ask yourself:

Remember, “no” is a complete sentence.

7. Visualize protection around you. Visualize an envelope of white light around your entire body. Or with extremely toxic people, visualize a fierce black jaguar patrolling and protecting your energy field against intruders.

8. Develop x-ray vision. The spaces between the vertebrae in your lower back (lumbar spine) are conducive to eliminating pain from the body. It’s helpful to learn to mindfully direct pain out of these spaces by visualizing it leaving your body. Say goodbye to pain as it blends with the giant energy matrix of life!

9. Take a bath or shower. A quick way to dissolve stress is to immerse yourself in water.

My bath is my sanctuary after a busy day. It washes away everything from bus exhaust to long hours of air travel to pesky symptoms I have taken on from others. Soaking in natural mineral springs divinely purifies all that ails.

Keep practicing these strategies. By protecting yourself and your space, you can create a magical safe bubble around you that nurtures you, while simultaneously driving negative people away. Don’t panic if you occasionally pick up pain or some other nasty symptom. It happens. With strategies I discuss in my book to surrender other people’s symptoms you can have quicker responses to stressful situations. This will make you feel safer, healthier, and your sensitivities can blossom.

Wentworth by the Sea…

The Last of the Grand Dame Hotels

W

hat is that quaint, little portside town with the glistening steeples and lovely, historic homes and architecture?

This is a question I would ask myself so many times as we crossed the Piscataqua River on our way to Maine and back.

Considering I have such a love of seaport towns, it was amazing that I hadn’t found my way to Portsmouth, New Hampshire many years before. But finally, one year we stopped…and I’ve been going back ever since.

For me, Portsmouth has it all. Locally sourced, fresh and imaginative cuisine; historic buildings; cozy sidewalk cafes; art galleries; jazz clubs; distinctive artisans’ boutiques…and some of the best pumpkin-spiced beer you’ve ever tasted – well, that is if you visit in October! An easy hour drive north from Boston, it makes a great weekend getaway. There are charming inns and B&Bs and your standard well-known hotels right in the downtown area, however, a trip to Portsmouth wouldn’t be complete without staying at the grand Wentworth by the Sea.

The almost 140 year history of Wentworth by the Sea is astounding. As the only grand seaside resort left standing on the New Hampshire coast, it was named to the National Trust’s 2008 list of Dozen Distinctive Destinations.® Only four grand hotels remain in New Hampshire, and the Wentworth almost wasn’t one of them. In the early 1980’s grand dame hotels had lost their appeal to most upscale travelers. Huge hotel chains were popping up everywhere and people wanted modern comforts and modern design in up and coming sophisticated cities. Sadly, having fallen into disrepair, the Wentworth closed in 1982 and was almost demolished to make way for private homes.

All was not lost though as the grand hotel was reborn after Friends of the Wentworth, the nonprofit group that helped save the endangered building from extinction, captured the imagination of a local hotel company, Ocean Properties, Ltd. Rescued from the wrecking ball and its place on the National Trust’s “Most Endan-

gered Sites” list, Wentworth reopened in 2003, just in time to be a focal point in 2005 for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the negotiations that ended the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.

The six year, $30 million reconstruction of Wentworth by the Sea Hotel & Spa added an 8,500 sq. ft. spa wing with an indoor pool and Jacuzzi; a reimagined space for the new restaurant, SALT; fireplaces in 18 of the guest suites; a fitness and business center; and the waterfront hideaway, Little Harbor Marina Suites. In addition, the 161-room hotel has incorporated the three distinctive original Victorian towers and as many architectural details as could be salvaged. The hotel made such a splashing rebirth that it won the accolades of being the only hotel in New Hampshire on the 2012 Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler lists of “Best hotels in the US.” From the minute you walk through the grand entrance of the Wentworth, you feel welcomed with open arms. While some grand hotels may appear stuffy and pretentious, the look and feel of the Wentworth couldn’t be more welcoming. From the beautiful, grand entryway into the lobby to the stunning ocean and sea glass themed restaurant and bar to the luxurious rooms, the Wentworth is a vision to behold. Our room was perfect with silky linens on a plush king-sized bed you could sleep in forever, an exquisite marble bath and oversized glass shower enclosure and the best part of all… radiant heat beneath the bathroom floor! Who could ask for more?

But if you did – you’d certainly receive it if you booked the Center Turret Officer’s Suite. It features 600 square feet split between two levels and connected by a spiral staircase, with a four-poster King bed and sitting area on one level and an elegantly appointed parlor with desk, armoire and dining area on the other.

This suite offers a 360-degree view of the ocean, harbor and marina, a kitchenette, and bath with a glass and marble-enclosed shower.

As much as I loved the room, I had to leave it to experience the newly designed SALT Kitchen & Bar. Officially reopened in June 2013, the restaurant is housed in a completely reimagined space that was able to keep alive the classic yet modern feel of the former space. It is truly a sensory experience for diners, engaging on multiple levels. “We created SALT to be approachable, intimate and engaging with a lively, theatrical chef’s bar at center stage to provide a social hub for friends and family to gather round a selection of small plate offerings, handcrafted cocktails and sommelierselected wines,” said Michael O’Shaughnessy, Wentworth General Manager. However, if privacy is what you’re looking for, there is a lovely private dining room lined with glass walls on one side and stocked with hundreds of amazing wines on the other. It’s perfect

Maybe the best part of the Wentworth experience was the spa treatment.

I received an ancient Ayurvedic treatment called the Shirodhara, which is a healing massage that entails continuous pouring of warm oil on the forehead with a pendulum motion for a specific period of time. The treatment begins with a full body massage and head massage to warm up the body.

Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome in Women

T

he following is an excerpt from a chapter written by Dr. Frank Aieta from the soon to be released book: Essential Remedies for Women’s Health. The chapter entitled “Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome and Women” gives an in-depth look at this very common but often overlooked condition.

Many women today are performing the hectic balancing act of working full time jobs, tending to their children and taking care of their homes. In my naturopathic medical practice I would have to say that over 75% of the new female patients that I see on a daily basis list fatigue as one of their top chief complaints. Fatigue can have many different etiologies ranging from overt disease causes such as cancer or an autoimmune condition to sleep disorders or thyroid dysfunction. One of my jobs as a physician is to uncover these possible causes through proper history taking, running laboratory tests, getting appropriate imaging done and performing a physical examination. Other sources of fatigue can be more functional in nature such as dietary shortcomings, which for example can lead to nutrient deficiencies such as iron or B12.

One of the most common causes that I see though is a condition known as adrenal fatigue syndrome. Unlike an overt disease where there is a defined cause, a syndrome is a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and suggest the presence of a certain disease or an increased chance of developing disease. Syndromes tend to have a broad range of possible causes that could create a particular set of circumstances rather than one specific root cause.

Syndromes are important, because they alert us that we have dysfunction going on in the body that may not have a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship. A good example of this is PMS or premenstrual syndrome. PMS is simply a descriptive term for a set of symptoms associated with the onset of the menstrual cycle. It does not tell us the cause. To really understand this syndrome we first

need to understand the major players here and they are of course the adrenal glands themselves and the important life sustaining hormones that they secrete.

Adrenal Glands The adrenals are small glands that sit on top of the kidneys and their role in the body is extremely important to say the least. These powerful little glands manufacture and secrete steroid hormones such as cortisol, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, pregnenolone, aldosterone, testosterone and others that are essential to your health and vitality. They not only significantly affect the functioning of every tissue, organ and gland in your body; they also have important effects on the way you think and feel. In all actuality, without the hormones the adrenals produce you would die very quickly.

Adrenal fatigue syndrome is produced when your adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands enable your body to respond to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional or psychological) through these hormones that regulate energy production and storage, heart rate, blood sugar balance, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress.

Stress can come in the form of an emotional crisis such as the death of a loved one, a physical crisis such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life and your adrenals have to respond. If they don’t, or if their response is weak, you will experience some degree of adrenal hypo-functioning and fatigue.

Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome In adrenal fatigue syndrome, your adrenal glands function, but not enough to maintain your normal, healthy balance. Their output of hormones has been diminished by over-stimulation. This overstimulation can be caused either by a very intense single stress or by chronic or repeated stressors that have a cumulative effect. When a person’s adrenal glands have a low reserve, they are unable to make adequate amounts of a key stress hormone called cortisol as well as all of the others. In consequence, people with low adrenal output and reserve tend to be tired and depressed, are more susceptible to colds, flu and other infections, tend to have prolonged infections, and are much more vulnerable to allergies and arthritis, among other things. Many of the patients that I see with low adrenal function tell me that they are prone to bouts of anxiety, nervousness, temper flare-ups and even panic attacks.

The reason for this is that adrenal hormones are necessary to maintain adequate blood sugar. In people with low adrenal reserve, blood sugar drops quickly during stress because there is not enough

cortisol to maintain it. To rescue the body from death the body pumps adrenaline, this can raise blood sugar but can also cause acute or severe anxiety. I also find that most patients will turn to sugary snacks for a quick burst of energy but later end up feeling extremely tired, nervous and jittery at the same time as their blood sugar drops.

Traditional doctors may treat these symptoms with anti-anxiety medications, which leave the patient feeling even more lethargic.

In the remainder of the chapter, I discuss some of the common causes of adrenal fatigue syndrome, the symptoms that accompany it, common diagnostics testing methods to uncover it and some of the best natural ways to treat this very common syndrome.

The Transformational Power of a Juice Cleanse

ou have heard about juice cleanses and the many benefits they offer, but perhaps you are still dubious. Why is cleansing necessary? How can fresh juice offer a physical and mental transformation?

Why Cleanse?

There are several benefits a cleanse offers: 1. Gives our body a break. Digestion is the #1 energy drain on our body’s systems. Our body produces different enzymes in response to what we eat to break down the proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The more complex the meal, the more our body has to work to break down the different foods and digest them.

The process of juicing, which transforms solids into liquid, before ingesting, pre-starts the digestive process for our body, lessening our energy expenditure. Moreover, juicing removes the fiber allowing the liquid to be quickly absorbed by our body.

With all this energy freed from needing to spend time digesting, the body can redirect it to other tasks, such as repairing cell damage.

2. Resets eating habits. Have you noticed that your mouth becomes habituated to what you eat and then it craves more of that taste? For example, your mouth craves a full fatty flavor or a sweet taste or salty flavorings? These cravings lead to eating increased amounts of richly flavored foods, most of which can be artificially flavored and heavily processed. Then it becomes difficult to enjoy the simple taste of a crisp apple.

We remove these foods from our diet and allow our palates to reset during a cleanse. During the reset we have an opportunity create new eating habits and break past food addictions.

3. Lightens us physically and spiritually. During a cleanse, we enter a more raw and vulnerable state. No longer able to hide behind our comfort foods to mask an emotion, we find ourselves forced to face our feelings. This exposure - while sometimes uncomfortable at first - allows us to release it.

In addition, as we clean out our insides, we find ourselves compelled to clean up our exterior surroundings as well. The weight imposed by the objects in our life is thereby also released, lightening our mood and spirit.

The Power of Juice There are many types of cleanses, ranging from a whole foods diet, to the raw food diet, to a water fast. Here we are talking about a juice cleanse, which means drinking only fresh-pressed, nutrientdense, juices comprised of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Juicing is different than blending. Smoothies are made by blending fruits and vegetables together with water, which keeps the fiber in the drink.

Juicing separates the fiber from the sugars.

The length of the cleanse can range from 1 to 60 days. Perhaps you have seen the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead: a documentary of Joe Cross’s 60 day green juice cleanse and how it saved his life.

During a juice cleanse, you drink primarily green juices supplemented with fruit juices. A green juice has a base of greens (cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, swiss chard, cabbage, lettuce etc.) with fruits (apple, pear, strawberry, pineapple, oranges, lemon etc.) and perhaps some herbs (ginger, garlic, basil etc.).

There are many benefits to green juices, including: 1. Drinking multiple servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Juicing requires roughly a half pound of greens per quart of juice. This is a lot of greens, meaning that during a juice cleanse, you can imbibe up to 2 pounds of greens a day! When was the last time you ate 2 pounds of greens a day? Yes, we know we should have 5 servings a day - but do we always? Just think of the health benefits that drinking the vitamins and minerals of 2 pounds of greens will give you.

2. 100% nutrition that is quickly and completely absorbed. Fresh juice allows all the nutrients to quickly enter your bloodstream.

To maintain the balance of spring energy, Taoists believe there are two levels of diet. One is normal eating and the other is the “Forgotten Food” diet. Normal Eating is using the most nutritive foods you can find. One should use correct food preparation (no raw, cold, unclean food) seasonal considerations, tastes and the timely consumption of these foods are important. The foods that we eat on a daily basis are considered to nourish us only temporarily because they may also nourish the bacteria, viruses and parasites that share our bodies with us. This ‘temporariness’ is a very important concept, since these foods tend to go bad quite quickly. It is said that the difference between a nourishing food and a poison is about three hours.

The Forgotten Food diet is seen today as Chinese Herbal Therapy. In this practice, those parts of the plant, animal and even minerals that we don’t normally eat, are considered for their healing 26

and restorative properties. The bark, roots, leaves, twigs of many plants and trees, animal and reptile parts and even certain rocks and resins have all been shown to have medicinal properties. In the Chinese Materia Medica there are over 10,000 entries. In the Taoist way, there is no clear cut distinction between what is considered food and what is considered medicine. Literally everything we put in our mouth affects the body in some way.

Chinese Medicine believes we should prepare the body one month in advance of the coming season. There is a very easy way to do this and bring a forgotten food diet into your normal eating diet. These are Chinese Herbs prepared to keep the body in balance throughout the year.

The formula name is the Four Things Soup. To make 1 cup of a tea a day you would put 8 cups of water into a non-aluminum pot.

Bring the tea to a boil and turn down to a low simmer for about 1 hour and the soup should be about 4 cups. Refrigerate after indulging in your 1st cup of Restorative Tea. The herbs are pretty easily available but please call the school if you need any help locating any of them.

pproximately 30 million Americans regularly suffer from migraine headaches (MH). If you are one of them, and frequently find that such headaches reduce your overall productivity and/or ability to work, you may find the discussion of natural remedies below helpful.

Definition & Symptoms A migraine is a common form of chronic, debilitating headache that today remains one of the most undertreated neurological conditions. MHs are known to occur at any age and more often in women than in men (attacks occur during menses in 60% of women, possibly due to decreased estrogen and progesterone levels). They most typically occur in the morning and can last 1-72 hours, can occur in one half of the head (unilateral), or can become bilateral or change from side to side. On average, they strike 1-3 times per month, but also can occur less or much more frequently.

According to Sergey A. Dzugan, MD, PhD, migraine is a collection of disorders rather than a single disorder. While no single hypothesis explains the mechanism underlying MH, it is generally believed to result from complex interactions between the nervous and vascular systems and alterations in brain chemicals. lates the sympathetic nervous system (which controls primitive responses to stress and pain, the “fight or flight” response), which in turn delays emptying of the stomach into the small intestine, thereby impairing absorption and effectiveness of oral medications.

MH pharmacotherapy includes drugs that treat nausea, anxiety, pain, and inflammation, such as steroids, tranquilizers, narcotic pain relievers, and serotonin promoters. MH prevention drugs include beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, serotonin blockers, and anticonvulsants.

Natural Remedies

If you no longer wish to rely on often ineffective medications to treat or prevent your MHs, the remedies discussed below are a great place to start after discussing your choices with your medical practitioner. Consider trying a number of remedies to determine what works best for you.

Butterbur – Experts believe that this herb’s anti-inflammatory components may prevent the blood vessel constriction thought to cause or accompany MHs. One study showed that patients who took 75 mg of butterbur twice daily experienced 48% fewer migraines (Neurology 2004); however, a previous study found that even 50 mg twice per day was more effective than a placebo. Select a product free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs).

DMSO – This sulfur-rich, safe, anti-inflammatory and local anesthetic was originally created from wood pulp, but is also found naturally in vegetables, fruits, and grains.

Historically known as a solvent and a remedy for injured race horses, DMSO can be used internally or topically.

Feverfew - One of the oldest herbal remedies for migraines, feverfew can be taken in capsule or tea form. Alexander Mauskop, M.D., a board certified neurologist and founder/director of the New York Headache Center, supports use of this herb to treat migraines due to its widely-studied key component, parthenolide. reduction in accompanying nausea and vomiting. (Lancet 1988) Magnesium – According to Mauskop, “Infusion of magnesium results in a rapid and sustained relief of an acute migraine.” Two double-blind studies suggest that chronic oral magnesium supplementation may also reduce the frequency of migraine headaches.

(Clin Neurosci. 1998) Omega 3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) - These healthy fats can fight off inflammation, likely to be a cause of many headaches, including MHs. Daily consumption of appropriate doses of fish oil supplements, along with omega-3-rich fish, flax seeds, and/or chia seeds, is recommended.

Natural Progesterone Cream – Estrogen dominance (higher ratio of estrogen to progesterone) is considered one cause of MH. Both progesterone and its metabolite allopregnanolone enhance the calming, anti-anxiety effect of GABA (a neurotransmitter and amino acid), and are potent analgesics, anxiolytics and anti-inflammatories.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) - One study showed that high-dose (400mg) riboflavin significantly reduced MH frequency and allowed for reduced use in the number of anti-migraine drug tablets. (Eur J Neurol. 2004) Riboflavin is found in various foods, including nuts and green vegetables.

Essential Oils/Aromatherapy – Many MH sufferers find relief from bringing 100% pure, natural lavender and peppermint oils into their environments. Other helpful oils include bay, melissa, jasmine, eucalyptus, and rosemary. Still other oils can help the panic, anxiety, and/or sleep difficulties that often precede or accompany migraines. Try spraying them on your pillow or in the air, or placing them on your temples. Common carrier oils for topical application such as massage include the oils of sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, coconut, and sesame.

Diet Changes - Mauskop maintains that immediate water consumption can stop a MH. Tracking what you eat with a diary can help you identify your personal food triggers. Try completely eliminating these foods one at a time to see if your migraines improve: alcohol; caffeine; chocolate; canned foods; cured/processed meats; dairy; MSG; aspartame; and food preservatives and dyes (especially red and yellow).

Complementary Modalities – Some find that acupuncture, chiropractic care, biofeedback, massage, controlled deep breathing, craniosacral therapy, and/or therapeutic yoga, can minimize or eliminate migraines by impacting the nervous system and reducing stress. Researchers in a 2011 Swedish study tested exercise (40 mins, 3x/week) against relaxation or a preventative migraine drug, finding that the exercise routine worked as well as the other treatments to reduce MH frequency. (Cephalalgia. 2011).

The Importance of Stomach Acid

S

tomach ache? Heartburn? Indigestion and Bloating? Ever considered reaching for an anti-acid medication to soothe the pain? With so many over the counter and prescription medications aimed at neutralizing acid in the stomach to help relieve your discomfort, who hasn’t tried a few of them?

The truth is, while this may be a quick fix for your stomach troubles, what should really be investigated are the causes of what could be ailing your digestive system.

Acid is the key ingredient for digestion of food, nutrient absorption and even prevention of infections. Specialized cells in the stomach lining called parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid to keep the stomach at a low pH around 2, the appropriate range for digestion. The stomach has the ability to maintain this acidic environment without becoming digested itself through its many layers of mucous and neutralizing solutions which act to protect the stomach. The stomach is the only organ with the ability to handle such a tumultuous acidic environment.

When acid from the stomach washes up to the esophagus, for example, this not only creates discomfort but can create permanent damage to the tissue. How do we keep acid in the stomach in appropriate amounts? The following will help navigate the function of stomach acid and ways to keep a healthy amount in your stomach.

Digestion When stomach acid production is compromised, food can sit longer that it should in the stomach. This can create symptoms of nausea, bloating and heartburn. Not only is this uncomfortable, it is a sign of improper digestion. Instead of suppressing these symptoms when they arise, it is better to look at the cause, which potentially could be an underlying issue with low stomach acid.

Fights Infection Bacteria and viruses come into the body through the food we eat. Cooking food helps to reduce the number of microorganisms

coming into the stomach; however, this is not enough! Some bacteria survive even when heated to a high temperature and some foods we eat are not cooked prior to eating. This means we need a line of defense to protect us from succumbing to illness every time we eat. When the appropriate amount of acid is in the stomach, the majority of harmful bacteria are removed.

Absorption of Vitamins & Minerals Bone supporting minerals like calcium and magnesium need the assistance of stomach acid to be absorbed. Therefore, long term stomach acid reduction can create a greater risk of reduced bone density.

Vitamin B12, is a water soluble vitamin that plays several roles in the body including nervous system protection, cardiovascular health, energy and DNA repair. The stomach pH needs to be acidic for Vitamin B12 to become bound and eventually absorbed.

The way in which we eat can affect our stomach acid. Drinking too many fluids with meals can dilute stomach acid, making it more difficult to properly digest food.

Also, ensuring you are getting enough zinc in your diet, a mineral that is essential for stomach acid production found highest in pumpkin seeds.

As we age, naturally the stomach lining thins, reducing stomach acid secretion. This puts the elderly at a greater risk of becoming low in minerals and vitamins, especially those that support bone density.

Stress reduction is important for a number of reasons. Stress is a signal to the body to stop digestion and focus on getting out of danger. Chronic stress leads to low stomach acid production. Focus on making mealtime as serene as possible, fully relaxing to allow the digestive process to work properly.

While there are tests that can be run to assess stomach acid content in your stomach, it isn’t always necessary to test this prior to implementing lifestyle changes to improve levels of stomach acid.

ave you ever seen a cat get up from a nap? It will stretch out its front legs till its belly touches the floor. Then, if it feels so inclined, it may arch up its back and hold the position for a second and then go about its daily business. What a quick and perfect treatment this seems to be. No strain, no need for special instruction…only a basic response to a felt need. What do animals know that we have forgotten?

The dictionary defines kinesthesia as “the sense whose end organs lie in the muscles, tendons, and joints and are stimulated by bodily tensions; the muscle sense.” Clearly here is another sense that we know little about and that we rarely consider when we count our other senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. We do not include or know about our kinesthetic sense because most of us have lost touch with this deep, inner sense. The kinesthetic sense is a lost sense that becomes conscious usually when tension or disease becomes so advanced that we cannot ignore it anymore.

The kinesthetic sense is often misconstrued to mean simply a sense of movement or else a sense of our body in space. These are peripheral aspects of the kinesthetic sense; in fact the “muscle sense” is most clearly experienced when the body is not moving, but at rest or else moving quite slowly. Some discussions of this inner body sense even go so far as to imply that it is always unconscious. How far have we come from that cat simply feeling and responding to its bodily needs?

Where then is this kinesthetic sense and what does it feel like?

What is this new world, this unexplored territory of internal sensation, this life of deep feeling beneath our skin in muscle, tendons, and joints?

The kinesthetic sense is buried under thousands of years of civilization and human conditioning. The direction that civilization has taken us is away from an awareness of our physical depths and towards a greater awareness and understanding of the world and universe outside of ourselves. We have become masters of the world and strangers to ourselves.

Eastern cultures have not forgotten this inner life, and so in India yoga has been developed and practiced for thousands of years.

From China, Taoism and T’ai Chi have preserved and explored this inner world of the kinesthetic sense. Eastern born practices characteristically call for a quieting of the mind and a turning of conscious32

ness towards the inside of the body. What has come to be called the unconscious or even the id or libido in Western psychology is really only a vague and distant understanding of the flows and blocks of internal energy that yoga and Taoism have studied, in detail, for thousands of years. Unfortunately the descriptions that have come down to us from these Eastern practices are not always very clear or comprehensible. They are often in poetic or coded language, and they can mean next to nothing to a people steeped in the rigors of logic and scientific explanations. About all we can glean from these Eastern literatures is that something is being felt inside the body and this feeling sometimes moves around inside the body. What is clear is that if we should learn to still the abstract mind and reduce the stimulation from our other senses, eventually this internal and physical universe will make itself known.

The grip of tension is often our first introduction to the kinesthetic sense. Like the dawning of a new day, our specific and real tensions rise up and fill our consciousness. Where we may first feel this tension is an individual matter.

Some people feel it in their faces, some in their legs, and others in the belly or the back. We may feel the tension as a gripping sensation that will not let go or else as a steady, heavy pressure on a part of our body that will not abate. At last we know something is very wrong and can actually feel the problem. This powerful sense of our disease, of our tension and stiffness, becomes a guide. Our lives may forever be changed by an awareness of the kinesthetic sense. We are not so fooled anymore. Our discomforts, mankind’s discomfort, become conscious and clear.

Kinesthesia As Guide Discovering the kinesthetic sense is a breakthrough in a yoga practice. Years can be spent in meditation or doing special exercises before the kinesthetic sense becomes more fully conscious. We are so seduced by every other aspect of life (sights, sounds, thoughts) that our basic inner condition is really deep in hiding. Yet when the kinesthetic sense does finally dawn on us life is changed. We have found a true guide.

The athlete learns a skill or practices a form that is external to himself and that he tries to eventually master through practice.

When the kinesthetic sense guides us, movement is motivated from internal feeling. Tension, constriction, stiffness, and strain become the cues we respond to so that our style of exercise or movement is a kind of ongoing physical therapy. Pleasure and relief from discomfort are the rewards.

Increasingly movement will be initiated from within, from a source of natural wisdom. One learns to move more smoothly; slowness can be a virtue. Speed and furious exercise will appear, if not funny, then a little insane. The ethics of hardness and drive are outgrown and softness in body texture and softness in personal style seem more in order. The inevitable good sense in relaxation and being one’s natural self becomes increasingly apparent, even unavoidable.

The whole fabric and style of life becomes an expression of our bodies and the feeling we have of the inside of our bodies. This is certainly a new order of things when the body sense, the kinesthetic sense, becomes our guide.

Don’t You Want Your Pet to Live a Long, Healthy Life?

D

id you know that your pets will live healthier lives by eating raw food? Specifically, a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or the BARF Diet, as it is sometimes called. This is a type of natural diet that consists of raw meat, bones, organs, and veggies -- the vegetables being primarily for the dogs, not cats. With raw feeding, what you see is what you get, natural raw products without preservatives or fillers. A raw diet should be composed of the same quality of ingredients that you would feed yourself, but fed in the raw state, the bones and the organs being more optional for us.

I know that eating raw meat sounds less than appealing but take a step back and think about it. Dogs were domesticated a few thousand years ago and today they still share about 98% of the same genetics as the wolf. Their jaw structure is very closely related. This holds true if you are sitting and reading this next to a Papillion or a Great Dane.

Cats were domesticated even later than dogs and are also closely related to their larger wild ancestors. The stories of the first domesticated cats come from Egypt, where they were enlisted to protect grain silos from rodents. They were so successful at it they were regarded as gods. There isn’t a cat today that doesn’t hunt, or at least try, given the opportunity.

By feeding our pets a raw food or BARF Diet we are bringing them back to their roots and giving them what their systems are actually designed to eat. A raw diet is what they have eaten for hundreds if not thousands of generations before the invention of commercial pet food, or kibble. In the early 1900’s commercial pet food emerged in the marketplace. The mid-1960’s is when there was a major marketing effort against feeding table scraps and promoting the importance of feeding processed foods to pets.

Before kibble was even a glimmer in the eyes of businesses many Europeans -- and I am sure Americans -- were feeding their pets meat-based diets, getting scraps from the butcher or hunting excursions, leftovers of food from the table, or if worst came to worst, the animals would hunt down their meals.

The beauty of raw food is that they contain no preservatives, fillers, or things that you have never heard of. Bones, raw meat, organs, vegetables, and nothing more are the components of a raw diet.

There are also many benefits to your pet’s health.

Benefits of Raw Feeding: • Natural Hydration: Most raw foods are at least 68% moisture while most commercial kibbles are under 10%. Dogs and cats require water to survive just like we do. It is necessary for metabolic function, regulation of temperature, not to mention a building block of life. It is always encouraged that you leave water out for your animals, but when feeding raw foods, your pets will drink less water because they are getting naturally hydrated from their food.

• Smaller, less odorous stools which turn into dust within a few hours: Maybe you haven’t ever done the input to output comparison mindfully, but the next time you scoop the litter box or go on poop scoop detail, think about how much you fed your pet.

Kibble, being mostly starch-based, can’t be broken down and utilized effectively; therefore stools are massive and smelly. With raw food, stools are small because your pets are digesting and utilizing all of the nutrients present in the food. The stool turns to white in a few hours because of the presence of natural calcium in the raw food and when the stool becomes dust, it will eventually blow away in the wind.

• Cleaner teeth and gums: Have you paid to clean your animal’s teeth or even brushed their teeth on a semi regular basis? You need to do that because their mouths lack the enzyme needed to break down the starch in kibble. We suggest feeding them whole bones (often referred to as RMB or Raw Meaty Bones) such as neck bones. Everything runs parallel in the neck making the neck perpendicular to the teeth, thereby acting as a natural dental floss.

Healthy and Natural Ideas for Kid’s Birthday Parties

I

recently read this great romance novel. I know... it’s embarrassing to admit, I read romance novels…lots of them! They are my one vice and I love them. Anyway, back to the topic of what I read, it was a story about a mother of 5 girls. The mother was remarkably controlling, everything had to be perfect, homemade, organic and healthy, sugar free, along with other rules as well. No television, except for PBS on an irregular basis, and so on. Honestly, I saw myself in this character. Except it was like observing myself through a window.

I love my children. They are incredible and sweet and young.

So, as I was reading this novel, and getting a good look at myself, albeit not quite as scary, it occurred to me: How can I maintain a fun atmosphere while still integrating these healthy natural principles into our lifestyle? Incorporating healthy and natural strategies into daily living can be easy with regular planning. With special events like children’s birthday parties, it can take a little more effort to be creative. Here are some ideas to get you started: 1. Let’s start with the birthday cake. To make a healthier cake, you can substitute the regular sugar in the recipe with palm sugar or coconut sugar which are lower glycemic, or maple sugar which is rich in minerals. As for frosting, there are some fun recipes that combine cocoa powder and butter substitute such as earth balance, palm oil shortening, and natural sweetener such as honey or coconut sugar. Another great frosting recipe combines maple cream, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, a small amount of milk substitute such as rice milk, with a dash of sea salt. 2. Party Favors—Avoid Candy! Even without sweets, party favors are treasured by young ones. Consider offering children’s books as favors, or maybe some stickers and colored pencils. Some other ideas include creating your own party favors such as homemade chocolate lollipops that are naturally sweetened and dairy-free. A great chocolate recipe can be found on the blog: naturallivingfamily. com. It combines cocoa butter, cocoa powder, honey, vanilla extract and sea salt. Once the mixture is poured into candy molds with lollipops sticks and hardens, you can then remove the chocolate lollipop from the mold and wrap it in a fun way.

3. Feeding Your Guests. Birthday parties often fall during mealtime where serving food is an essential requirement. Pizza is the most common food to serve at children’s parties and can easily be made gluten-free. There are many different ready-made gluten-free pizza shells that can be purchased or you can make your own. In addition, more and more pizza restaurants are offering gluten-free pizzas and often, they will deliver. In addition to pizza, you can offer a fruit salad or fruit ‘kebobs’. 4. There are lots of natural and fun environmentally friendly ways of decorating for parties. Some creative ideas recommended on www.attachedtoparenting.com include hanging a clothesline and wooden clothespins and attaching paintings or drawings by the birthday child. You could also hang photos of the birthday child from various years of the child’s life. Of course balloons are always a welcome addition to any party. Another great place to find ideas for natural homemade birthday party decorating is on www.pinterest.com.

The key to offering a healthy natural environment for your child’s birthday party is planning time, and even more importantly, a little quiet time for brainstorming. There are a wealth of creative ideas out there, many of which can be accessed through simple internet searches on sites such as www.marthastewart.com. As a parent, particularly one that is so committed to raising a healthy natural child, it is important to loosen the reigns at times. As my husband often says... if only to reduce future rebellion. But equally important to consider is where the reigns need to be loosened. Giving refined sugar to our children at a birthday party is easily avoided while still maintaining a super fun atmosphere. The first step is not assuming that the childhood we experienced many years ago is the standard for today. Just because we may think that our child would be devastated if we don’t offer sugary lollipops as a party favor, doesn’t mean that they actually will. Try offering fun healthy suggestions first and take it from there!
