W

e all know that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The choices you make today determine both your direction and destiny for the next year.

You must dare to say yes to your goals and dreams and make that your number one priority. You must find what makes you come alive and go do it.

And you must have the patience and belief that you and the Universe will co-create your life and reality.

Each day pick 3 achievable goals that are specific, measurable, and realistic to accomplish that day. These goals should be moving you toward your long-term goal or dream that you have set for the next year. They should be simple, yet have the potential to move you out of your comfort zone at times to allow you to stretch to reach your ultimate desire. A good practice is to set aside some time on Sunday to plan out your three daily goals per day for the week. Some examples of daily goals are: • I will create inspiring affirmations that I will read each morning before I rise and each evening before I go to sleep.

• I will contact 3 people who will help me make new connections for my business.

• I will find a new way to exercise for 30 minutes today.

• I will design a peaceful, comfortable meditation space in my home and meditate for 10 minutes today.

• I will spend 30 minutes on my marketing plan and implement one unique idea for my new business.

• I will only check my email once in the morning and once in the evening to allow me uninterrupted time to focus on my tasks for the day.

As you can see, your daily goals may be combinations of spiritual, health and business goals. Be sure to check in with your thoughts and feelings as you set your goals at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day as you track your accomplishments. If at any time, this feels burdensome, then you need to revisit your long-term goal(s). If your goals and dreams don’t excite you and infuse you with energy, it will be much harder and less fulfilling to reach those wants, needs and wishes your heart and spirit are longing for. So ask yourself again if the goals you have set inspire you. If the answer is no, you may need to explore your passions more deeply to come up with a new set of dreams.

You succeed in living an extraordinary life by focusing seriously on those things – goals and dreams that make your life passionate and radiant.

The Graduate Institute (TGI) Establishes Ecotherapy Interest Group

T

he Graduate Institute (TGI) of Bethany has established an Ecotherapy Interest Group as an outcome of its new graduate credit certificate program that prepares Ecotherapists. The group is scheduled for monthly meetings at TGI in the early evening, and is an important initiative for grounding people in the stress-free effects of nature. Those who are interested in contributing or participating in the emerging field of Ecotherapy and Cultural Sustainability are encouraged to attend.

Last month’s meeting featured Dr. Ed O’Malley as the guest speaker - an ordained Interfaith Minister and Shaman whose work focuses on bringing people to spiritual awareness and health through deep exposure to the natural world. January’s meeting features Dr. Craig Chalquist, an Ecotherapist who founded the world’s first Ecotherapy program on the West Coast at J.f.K. University. It takes place on Wednesday, January 30 from 6 to 8 pm at The Graduate Institute.

Spotlight Medical Massage Therapist Daniel Suarez Opens Professional Massage Therapy Office In Southbury

D

aniel Suarez, licensed massage therapist certified in Medical Massage and Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy, recently opened a therapeutic massage therapy office, Rhythm Therapies: Advanced Massage Therapy, in Suite 102 at Building #2 in the Pomperaug Office Park in Southbury. These services duplicate services he offers at his original practice at 101 North Plains Industrial Road, Suite 104, Building 1B in Wallingford, Connecticut that he established in 2005.

Suarez specializes in helping to manage and prevent ongoing pain through Medical Massage, Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, Sports Massage and Orthopedic Massage which he also utilizes for most sports-related injuries. Since opening his office in Southbury in January 2012, he has earned a highly-regarded reputation for integrating numerous, highly-effective techniques into his individualized services for each client. “These techniques,” he explained, “are all derived from my extensive training and certification in Manual Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Sports Massage, Orthopedic Massage, Craniosacral Therapy, Medical Massage, Myoskeletal Alignment and other bodywork modalities.”

Physical pain is not a stranger to Daniel Suarez. At age 14, he was hit by a speeding car and suffered extensive injuries and was unable to walk. For over two and a half years, using a wheelchair, walker, crutches then a cane, he regained his ability to walk without assistance “Today I am 100% healed and living life pain free,” he stated joyfully. “Regaining my ability to walk is what guided me to this profession of helping others to relieve acute and chronic pain. While I cannot diagnose the cause of pain, I can use body reading and assessment when a body is out of alignment, and then correct that misalignment through Medical Massage and Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques.”

Suarez commented that he is able to avoid pain in his own body due to his extensive knowledge on effective and proper body mechanics and alignment techniques. “Because I possess a great deal of knowledge and experience from extensive continuing education on techniques for relieving the body from pain, I can do a lot of massage therapy work without harming my body. It’s all about body mechanics and how I position and use my arms, hands, back and legs to effectively alleviate pain in other people’s bodies and not cause pain or problems in my own body. Many times my clients are amazed at how quickly their pain is eliminated in just one or a few 8

sessions. Positional release is a technique of effectively releasing stress and pain by placing a client’s body in varying positions to relieve pain.”

Suarez stated, “Studies show that massage can improve the quality of day-to-day quality life, enhance general health, and become an effective part of a health maintenance or wellness plan. In addition to pain management, massage can reduce muscle spasms, stretch and loosen adhesions and scar tissue, improve and strengthen the body’s immune system for overall general health. It is known to promote joint health, improve range of motion and treat musculoskeletal problems. It is also well-known to relieve mental and emotional stress, enhance capacity for calm thinking and creativity, and promote a relaxed state of mental alertness.”

Previously employed as a lead massage therapist with a local area spa, Suarez opened his Southbury private practice to meet the demands of the specialty massage therapy he provides. “Medical Massage and body alignment are becoming a lost art form,” he explained. “These techniques are being overlooked and lost in the medical, pain management and orthopedic field. Today more and more doctors are accepting these modalities and techniques and often refer patients to me to give their clients pain relief. Medical Massage can work very complimentary to other medical and therapeutic treatments including physical and occupational therapy, chiropractic and psychotherapy.”

A member of the American Massage Therapy Association, Suarez is a graduate of the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy in Newington, CT., where he acquired his Connecticut State License in 2004. In 2006, he was certified in Medical Massage by Bob Pecora, PTA, LMT, and through the Upledger Institute in 2007, he was certified in Craniosacral Therapy. In July 2011, he was certified as a Myoskeletal Alignment Therapist utilizing Erik Dalton’s Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques. Today Suarez continues further education in these modalities plus training in Positional Release, Joint Mobilization, Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy, Active and Passive Stretching Techniques, Reflex Therapy, Soft Tissue Mobilization Techniques, 3-Dimensional Techniques, and Visceral Manipulation, plus Medical Massage Techniques for headaches, cervical pain, shoulder pain and low back pain.

His dedication to helping people alleviate pain has led Suarez to volunteer his services for the past nine years to Relay for Life, the Fight Against Cancer, local area marathons and other sporting events, where he performs both pre- and post-event massage for participants.

The Craving Cure

T

here are many myths which ask the question, “What does every woman, or man, want?” What do we all crave in this life? The answer the myth ultimately reveals is that we all want a life of our own, where we decide how we live and spend our lives’ time and not a life imposed upon us by the spell caste by a demon or the people in our lives telling us what to do. The sad part is that when we give up our healthy and true desires and cravings because of the desires and cravings of others we lose our lives and at the same time find that our cravings now become self-destructive and depersonalizing and are no longer life enhancing for us or the people in our lives because of what has been taken from us.

When our relationship with life becomes unhealthy so does our relationship with food. One cannot separate one’s life from one’s desires. No matter what age this unhealthy change happens at, it leads to unhealthy cravings and addictions. Self-destruction replaces self-esteem and what we seek and crave are any foods that will give us the feelings we no longer can experience due to the absence of healthy and loving relationships. The development of our bodies and its receptors are literally changed by what we have lost. So we seek any artificial means of providing ourselves and our bodies with temporary relief from the losses we have experienced.

People whose lives are being destroyed by unhealthy cravings are not stupid. They know what they are doing is not good for them but they do not have the inspiration and determination necessary to be reborn and act as if they were the person they want to be. It is no accident that the term born again comes up so frequently in the lives of those who are awakened by addictions, diseases and disasters and find new meaning in their lives. You must be ready to show up for practice and rehearse being the person whom you have created as your new role model. It is crazy but people take better care of their pets than they do themselves.

To do this you must trust yourself and your feelings and be ready to forgive yourself when you lose your way. You are each a work in progress and can always touch up or redo things if you do not create the work of art you intended. Now is the time to do what makes you happy and not what you think is the right thing to do. Feelings and heart wisdom need to be your guide. It is time to dump the guilt,

shame and blame others have imposed upon you and move into faith, hope and love as your motivators. Start saying yes to yourself and no to the people and things you do not want to do.

Simply doing something or accumulating material things will not make you a success but it will make you into a human doing. When you find happiness and meaning in your life you become a human being and a true success. It is never too late to re-parent yourself.

Recognizing the Power of Thought

H

ow do we recognize the power of our thoughts if we are unaware in the first place? Does it take a life altering event?

Is it something we learn with age? Maybe we are exposed to a book or movie that introduces the concept? I have to believe that when the student is ready, the teacher arrives and that there is some divine reason why and when we become “aware.” I will never forget the first time my eyes were opened to the concept of our thoughts creating our reality. I was meeting a potential advertiser who was the director of an energy medicine school. She said to me, in a whisper, “You see, at this school we believe that we are all spirits having a human experience.” I almost fell off my chair. What the heck was she talking about? And yet, there was a part of me in which that statement resonated so clearly and profoundly, I knew it to be true to the very core of my being. And thus began my five year journey into spirituality, mysticism, metaphysics and the understanding that we are so much more powerful than we know, that we are spirit having a human experience and that we do, indeed, have the power to change our reality through thought. But first, you must become aware.

I don’t believe it takes a life altering event or that understanding the power of thought is something we only learn with age. For me, I was only 39 years old and stumbling across Malinda was hardly a life altering event! Although in the process of all of this, my

life has undoubtedly been altered and I’m thankful every day that I was in the right place at the right time to hear that message and do something about it. There are no coincidences. If you’re reading this article, I believe you are in the right place at the right time. In fact, as I’m writing this paragraph I happened to look up through the skylight of the loft I’m in and I see this beautiful red-tailed hawk land on a tree branch right outside the window. I believe that spirit can send you messages through animals, music and other people. So I looked up the meaning of seeing a red-tailed hawk and here is what I read: “This powerful bird can awaken visionary power and lead you to your life purpose. It is the messenger bird, and wherever it shows up, pay attention. There is a message coming. It reflects a need to be open to the new or shows you ways that you may help teach others to be open to the new.”

You may already understand the power of seeing this bird while I’m writing this article as my purpose is to teach others to be open to new ideas, new concepts, and new thoughts.

I can’t predict when or why someone becomes aware that their thoughts create their reality, I can only imagine that their soul knows when they are ready and sets them on a path to discovery. There are some that will go through an entire life and never wake up, but that is their path as well. However, once the concept has been introduced to you, if you feel the resonation the way I did, you must pursue the investigation of it. I promise you, it will open your mind to ideas and concepts that you never thought possible. And therein, lies the power of thought.

If you are truly interested in the neurophysiology of thought processes, a great resource is “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself,” by Dr. Joe Dispenza. This book encompasses the process of how your brain forms a thought and the physiological effects of that thought.

Don’t think for a second that there aren’t physiological effects on the body as a result of the thoughts you have. I have heard countless examples of people who have either made themselves ill or cured an illness as a result of their thought processes.

Unfortunately, for most of us, until we realize that we do have the power to control and focus our thoughts, we are at the mercy of these thoughts controlling us. Your mind is constantly talking to you and most of the time it doesn’t have good things to say. If you spend a day or even a few hours just listening to the thoughts inside your head as if it were someone else talking to you, you’ll realize that you just might be living with a maniac. One minute your thoughts are saying one thing and the next they’ve either changed the subject or are contradicting what they just got through saying. How do we live like this? Because most of the time we aren’t even aware of the internal chatter and the effect it has on us. Most of the time we identify with this voice as if it were truly us. But it’s not. There is

something deeper inside that is what we’re truly made of that goes beyond the voice in our head. Some call it consciousness or awareness, but I like to think of it as our soul. If you can find that place and tap into it, I believe that is where you’ll find your true desires.

The problem is that most of us never or rarely tap into it. It’s not easy as you have to get past the crazy lunatic in your head that is talking all the time. Telling you what you should or shouldn’t do, what you should or shouldn’t like, how you should feel, what you should say, it’s exhausting. Not to mention the fact that this voice can totally turn your life upside down in the blink of an eye.

Half the time we don’t even pay attention to the feelings we have in our bodies, we just stay in our heads thinking about all the terrible things that could happen. But in brief moments, I believe we do glimpse the understanding that we should know better to be entertaining negative thoughts. And innately, we know how to stop them, so why don’t we? Why do we torture ourselves with these negative thought processes? If we can just stay in the present moment and focus on what is happening right now, we can save ourselves so much grief and torment. I wonder why we persist in allowing the pain body to govern our lives when intuitively we know that there is no point to it. I suppose it’s all just part of the process of being human and learning to master our emotions with each situation that is presented to us. We have to be persistent and take the time to practice getting past it. We do this through meditation, quiet time or silent retreats. Going inside and really listening to what our soul is aching to tell us. The reward is understanding who you truly are…spirit having a human experience.

Yoga: The Eight-Fold Path

escribing Yoga as an eight-fold path is a metaphor Jennifer Chadukiewicz, or Ananda Devi, as she is known to students and fellow Yoginis, can truly relate to. Like many westerners, Jennifer’s idea of yoga was that it was strictly a form of exercising the body; a part of a workout routine.

Asana Jennifer’s first exposure to yoga at her gym reinforced her idea that yoga was simply a form of exercise. Running and weight lifting were a part of her daily routine—until her husband injured his shoulder. Jennifer suggested they take it easy for a couple of weeks and try one of the gym’s group yoga classes. This started Jennifer down one of the paths of yoga; exercise, or asana.

Yamas and Niyamas Patty Difazio taught yoga at the gym and Jennifer quickly formed a bond with her. As their friendship grew, Jennifer learned that Patty, known as Divya Jyoti, met with a group of women, or Jnanis (students of knowledge), once a week to discuss spiritual

books and how they applied to one’s personal and social conduct— the yamas and niyamas—which are the first and second paths of yoga.

The Journey Jennifer’s path to yoga began many years before her toes hit the yoga mat. She was born in Alabama in 1970 into a family of Christian fundamentalists. When she was seven years old, her father decided to further his religious studies at Yale Divinity School. He was called to New Britain, CT where he raised his family and led a Congregational Church for 20 years. Connecticut was quite a distance, culturally, geographically and philosophically, from Jennifer’s fundamental southern roots.

Like many teens, Jennifer struggled with drugs and alcohol in her high school years. Jennifer was 18 years old when her spiritual life took an unlikely turn. She went to a treatment center for a solution to her drug and alcohol problem, but found something greater; a 12-step program of recovery. Over time, Jennifer learned that success in a 12-step program is predicated by an individual’s relationship with a God of their understanding. Working with a sponsor on the 12 steps and her ever-evolving relationship with God also guided her in her personal and social conduct, just as the yamas and niyamas do in yoga.

When Jennifer began deeper work on the 11th step in the program her sponsor suggested she investigate meditation practices.

Around the same time her husband was starting a new meditation practice to help him control his hypertension. A few days later they found themselves on a beach in florida, meditating twice a day and practicing their Asana. These many separate paths of Yoga were now merging for Jennifer. It was the aha moment we so often hear about!

While it may seem obvious to some, only after starting her meditation practice did Jennifer realize that meditation, exercise, and rightpersonal-conduct through living the 12 steps are yoga.

In 2009, after eight years of practicing and studying yoga and 21 years in recovery, Jennifer found herself homeschooling her 14-year -old daughter and 10-year-old son. She realized yoga offered her daughter an opportunity to learn philosophy and anatomy. This realization led them both to enroll in a 200 hour yoga teacher training class at Sacred Rivers Yoga Studio. They attended weekly classes with enthusiasm, graduating in November of that year. Jennifer taught free yoga classes on the beach for the next two years as she and her family sailed down the east coast, through the florida Keys and to the Bahamas.

Pranayama Upon their return to Connecticut, Jennifer required emergency surgery. On the advice of Swamini Lalitananda she spent two months recovering at the Sivananda Yoga Ranch in Woodbourne, New York. During her time there she immersed herself in a Sadhana (practice) Intensive program and discovered the significance of pranayama (breathing); adding yet another yoga path to her journey.

Jennifer understands the importance of being a student and a teacher. But most importantly she lives her life with integrity, living the principles of yoga at home, in her relationships with her husband and children, practicing them in her work and with friends and sponsors, treating everyone as the Divine Light that they are.

Jennifer believes everyone is on a path to yoga. It may not be clear right away, but a regular practice and gathering with other practicing yogis will illuminate the way on that path.

A Different Perspective on Food, Weight Loss, and Healing

T

his past October, I had a once in a lifetime experience. The Dalai Lama came to Danbury, CT, and I had a chance to be there. It was an amazing experience to be in the presence of one so spiritually evolved. For days I felt joyous, uplifted, and his words about compassion stayed with me.

The Dalai Lama is not a Vegetarian But something else intrigued me about the Dalai Lama. Many people would assume that he’s a vegetarian, but he’s not. He tried being a vegetarian and it didn’t work for him. His doctors advised him to incorporate some animal products into his diet and he agreed.

This is hard for many of us to swallow. We want to show compassion in all aspects of our lives. Yet I can identify with the Dalai Lama’s choice. Roughly 25 years ago, as an idealistic teenager, I eschewed all animal protein out of love for our four-legged friends. But somehow it didn’t work out as planned.

My family adjusted to two separate dinners and sometimes even ate the rice, beans and tofu that I was eating. I was careful to balance my diet, eat organic and get all the complementary amino acids needed. I thought I was on the road to health because everyone knows meat only leads to clogged arteries and heart attacks. But something wasn’t right. Why was I so cold?

Why was my hair falling out? Why did I have indigestion all the time? Why did I catch so many colds?

The vegetarians I knew looked great. They were pictures of health, living from a place of kindness and compassion. How I wanted to be part of that world! Why couldn’t I be like that?

I decided it must be my body detoxing all the bad animal food I grew up on. Soon there were cleansing herbs and cleansing fasts. But nothing got better. Then I thought maybe I needed some warming herbs. But a few cups of ginger tea didn’t fix the problem. Maybe I needed vitamins for my hair. But that didn’t fix the problem. Maybe I needed enzymes so I could digest all those vegetables that seemed to sit in my gut. The enzymes did help make the beans and broccoli go down better, but I had to keep it up constantly and pop the pills with every meal.

Different People Need Different Diets More than two decades later, as a naturopathic doctor, I have a different perspective. Some people do well as vegetarians and some simply don’t. Some people don’t methylate folate as well and have a greater need for B12. Some people can use the omega-3 fatty acid in flax seed oil and other people need their EPA/DHA from fish oil. True vitamin A only comes from animal sources. Some people can convert beta carotene from vegetables into vitamin A; others cannot. And vitamin K2 from animal sources is better assimilated than K1 from vegetables. Biochemical individuality matters and foods that some people thrive on just don’t work for others.

Eat to Nurture Your Body In my early twenties I made a decision. Eating food was going to be about nurturing the body and that alone. It wasn’t going to be political statement, and I didn’t have to carry the weight of the world and all the problems of where our food comes from.

It’s also important to show compassion toward oneself. If I could be honest about my cat’s carnivorous nature, shouldn’t I be honest about my own nutritional needs? The truth was I was just a lot healthier before the vegan diet. Seven years of vegetarian living came to a crashing halt with one fateful filet mignon.

It seemed like selling out. What was next…McDonald’s?

Bacon? Wearing fur? But luckily there are more choices than just the Standard American Diet and veganism. Humanely raised, grass-fed meat is available—from places where a cow can be a cow, grazing and walking freely. I didn’t have to support the factory farms. If I was going to eat meat, I was going to do it right and support the farmers that shared my values. Sure, it was expensive, but so were all the supplements, enzymes, and interesting ways to dress up tofu.

Listening to my body worked. I felt better and people noticed. Comments ranged from, “You have a healthy glow” to “Gee, you don’t look like death warmed over anymore.” Once you find a diet that works for you, you know it. You can feel the difference.

Research on Nutrition Doesn’t Always Bring Clarity What if our choices are not straightforward? Every day it seems there’s a new study looking at health and some parameter of the diet. And for every piece of advice there’s a counter argument. for every study advocating whole grains, there’s a caution against wheat belly. for every high-protein advocate, there’s a caution against acid-forming foods and a need to alkalize. There are advocates of the China study and there are critics. for every Dr. Atkins emphasizing heavy protein, there’s a Dr. Ornish advocating lighter foods and complex carbohydrates. finding the right diet can be a challenge, especially for those who want to lose weight. Some of the patients in my clinic want to lose more than 100 pounds. Others have been dealing with chronic conditions like fibromyalgia and fatigue for so long, they’re not even sure what signals their bodies are giving them.

Patients need clear guidelines concerning what to eat. And they need, as well, to pay attention to how their body feels. Are fresh juices giving them the enzymes and nutrients their bodies crave or just a sugar rush?

When we want advice on nutrition, we tend to look at the latest research for answers. But sorting out research on nutrition doesn’t always bring clarity. We’re measuring individuals within a sick population. We were raised on food of much poorer quality than our grandparents had.

We never had a healthy starting point and most of us in our formative years ate plenty of processed foods. We also need to

consider the quality of the studies—how long did they run and did the researchers cherry-pick their results?

We demonize fat, in particular saturated fat, but has flooding the market with fat-free products really made us healthier?

We use the same word, “fat”, to describe lipids in the diet and the adipose tissue where we store excess calories, and tend to equate them in our minds. But fat in our diets is essential. There’s no way to absorb fat soluble vitamins—A, D, E, and K— without fat. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to take the fat out of a product like milk and fortify it with vitamin D that we can’t absorb without the fat. And once the fat is out, we have to add something for taste, and that something is usually sugar.

If we broaden our perspective through history and cultures, we find a different story. There are some cultures where the diet is mostly vegetarian, but not completely vegan and these people can thrive and live well. Then there are Eskimos who can live on whale blubber and have no cholesterol issues, and the Masai of Africa who are primarily carnivorous with very few plants in their diet. Or even the french with their paradox of good health that goes along with beef, cheese and wine.

These anomalies were questioned by Dr. Weston A. Price in the 1930s. He studied the diets of indigenous people around the globe. A study like his would not be possible today, as just about every place on earth has had some experience with processed foods from the Western world.

What Dr. Price found was health—stunning physiques, perfect teeth and freedom from the diseases of the Western world.

But he also found variety.

Different cultures ate different amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. But all of them adapted to their surroundings and all of them thrived. And it was not the case that these people were genetically superior. Once processed food from the industrial world was available, they succumbed to the same medical conditions as those in the modern world.

Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss Certainly we cannot blame our genes for the epidemic of obesity that has become a problem in just the past 20 years.

Clearly our lifestyle is to blame, and our quick fixes aren’t working. “I lost so much weight drinking diet soda,” said no one ever. Eighty percent of the time when we attempt weight loss on our own, we either don’t reach our goals or we reach them and then gain the weight back.

When our computer system goes awry, we know to reboot the system. Go back to the last time things were right.

Eat local, organic produce and pastured animal products. Eat the way our grandparents and great grandparents ate. As a general rule: If it grows on a plant eat it, if it’s manufactured in a plant don’t.

Eating pure, unprocessed foods as our ancestors did is a healthy foundation, but for those with chronic conditions like diabetes and morbid obesity, specific therapeutic nutrition is called for. When someone has been obese for years, their body has a new set point. Our bodies reach equilibrium, and even an unhealthy state can start to feel normal. Good nutrition will help us not to put more weight on, but if we have 100 lbs. or more to lose we need the right diet to help us reach our goal.

A diesel engine requires diesel fuel; an unleaded motor needs unleaded, and our bodies, too, function best when they have the right fuel. The metabolic type diet that I use in my practice looks at very specific parameters to determine what foods will work for you. Do you oxidize your food fast or slow? This is important information. We want to avoid a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels, and we want to keep your body burning calories. Knowing your metabolic type will help determine what you need for optimal wellness.

Another factor in determining your metabolic type is how your autonomic nervous system runs. Do you spend most of your time on the go, in fight or flight mode? Or are you more laid back, taking life as it comes? The nervous system has two modes, all revved up (sympathetic) or resting and relaxing (parasympathetic). And we burn calories best when we have a balance of the two ways of being. Eating according to your metabolic type can help us find a new equilibrium.

Some principles of eating are true for all metabolic types.

We need to get rid of the garbage and stop kidding ourselves.

We need to stop the artificial sweeteners that wreak havoc on the liver and upset our metabolism. And to lose weight, we need to stop sugars, even the “good” sugars like honey and brown sugar, and we should have our fruit as whole fruit with the naturally occurring fiber, not as fruit juice.

When patients go through our weight loss program, we determine their metabolic type and give them specific foods to eat and specific ones to avoid. Green tea is a healthy food and even sold as a diet aid. Yet for the parasympathetic diet, green tea is a no-no.

The sympathetic dominant person who needs more rest and relaxation will do well with green tea, but the parasympathetic person doesn’t need more calm. The parasympathetic person needs to be revved up to burn calories.

The food list that goes along with your metabolic type is almost always full of surprises. Inevitably some of the foods our patients ate regularly, that seemed to be healthy, will be on the list of foods to avoid. But as the old adage says, if you keep doing what you’re doing, you will keep getting what you’re getting.

Working with our metabolic type requires discipline, and working with our life coach brings some much needed guidance to break longstanding habits. But we don’t need to punish ourselves as many dieters do. We can show compassion toward ourselves and be honest about what our bodies need for real nourishment.

W

hen you are exhausted, do you admit it, or do you power through your day in denial? Are you the bringer of love and compassion to yourself when self-care is needed or are you hard on yourself and take self-care opportunities for granted? One of the most loving things we can do for ourselves is to listen to our bodies and respond with compassion to create and hold space for recharging and rejuvenating our “inner-batteries” with sleep.

Not only is sleep as necessary as are air and water, but sleep is a spiritual practice—a gift from our creator, a surrender to something outside ourselves, and a willingness to let go. Sleep allows us to enjoy our peace and awareness, to be awake and step into our real power, and to fully live life the way it was meant to be no matter where we are on our journey.

In today’s modern and ever-shifting world, sleep is commonly taken for granted or even discarded—a consciousness that actually subtracts years from life by many who are consumed with the stresses of balancing work, relationship, finance, family, and everyday personal growth. One third of our lives are spent sleeping, and many think that taking a day off or sleeping more is a sign of weakness. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

Sleep, rest, and recovery are signs of physical and spiritual intelligence.

Without sleep, we suffer severely, as sleep-debt represents a personal show of disregard and disrespect. We damage the integrity of our consciousness, and lose our sense of wholeness, vision, intention, and desire. Without sleep, we do not work or communicate to our full potential because we don’t function properly. As a result, we do not excel. But when we practice self-care

and learn how to honor ourselves consistently with sleep, we recover and rejuvenate fast, maintaining a steady state of our highest best-self. By understanding that sleep is a time to allow the body to recover, we learn that a good night’s sleep will rejuvenate energies that will not exist for someone who chooses sleep-debt. for the world’s best, whether Mom, CEO, or Olympian, life’s podium starts with rest and recovery. Why is it that we pay careful attention to our vacation, work, and exercise plans, but forget the driving force behind all of those formulas—sleep?

Remember, sleep is nutrition and nourishment. Sleep equals optimal health and performance. Sleep’s greatest benefit is to the most important organ in our body—the brain. After getting the appropriate hours of sleep, our minds return to a renewed state of mental and physical consciousness.

When we start to consider sleep as a part of our daily exercise and wellness routine, getting through the week is not about how much energy we have, but more about how much energy we have left. fatigue and exhaustion disappear.

Four Ways to Age Gracefully

W

hen it comes to anti-aging, the fountain of youth and life extension, we have been bombarded through media with quick fixes, from lotions and potions to Botox and surgery. Rather than focusing on how to mask the aging process, prevention is the true key to aging gracefully. Although we are all aging with each passing year, treating your body to a healthful lifestyle is the best way to slow the aging process.

Minimum Exercise of 30 Minutes per Day The importance of exercise cannot be stressed enough. It is exactly as the quote states, “Bodies in motion stay in motion.”

This does not mean you have to run out and sign up for a marathon, but it does mean you should have physical activity every day. Exercise promotes muscle mass and decreases fat mass, which leads to a lean physique, toned skin and strength maintenance.

A sedentary lifestyle has been said to be responsible for 1 in 10 deaths worldwide.

Not totally surprising is the link between inactivity and obesity. Obesity is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension. We can stop this chain of events from coming to fruition

by incorporating physical activity into our daily routine.

No specific workouts are required nor is special equipment needed to meet recommended exercise requirements. All you need is a little motivation! As little as 30 minutes of walking a day counts toward your exercise requirement; 30 minutes of sustained household chores also counts. So get out your vacuum and get cleaning!

Drink Lots of Water (At Least Half Your Body Weight inOunces) Dehydration is not only a dangerous condition, it also can speed the aging process. Every cellular process in the body requires water. When cells are deprived of water they are less able to perform their functions and can begin to shrivel and shrink. Symptoms of fatigue, headaches and constipation all can be related to a less-thanadequate water intake. When skin cells become dehydrated, skin wrinkles and dryness can result.

Water-intake needs vary depending on the size and physical activity of the individual. A rough estimate of the bare minimum amount of water needed in one day is half your body weight in ounces. Things that increase the need for water above the

minimum consist of drinking dehydrating beverages, including coffee, soda and alcohol. Aside from certain kidney or heart conditions, there is always a need for water, so cheers to your neighbor and drink to the fountain of youth!

Reduce Stress There is more truth than you might think in the saying that stress gives you gray hairs.

Chronic stress accelerates the aging process by increasing the release of stress hormones.

Stress hormones are meant for short-term use; for example during short illnesses, or during life events, such as when caring for a new baby leads to sleep-deprivation. When stress hormones are called upon for more than a short period of time, the nutrients needed for proper stress responses become depleted. This means fewer nutrients are available for hair, skin and nail growth.

Chronic stress also weakens the immune system, inhibits short-term memory, and interrupts normal sleep patterns.

While stress is, unfortunately, inevitable, the way we perceive and react to stress is what makes the difference. Finding a positive spin to a negative situation and being able to laugh through tough times decreases the release of stress hormones. Having a positive attitude improves your stress response and promotes graceful aging.

Healthy Diet = Healthy Cells = Youthful Skin Diet is the number one place to start when it comes to aging gracefully. What we put in our mouths provides the building blocks for everything in the body, including what shows on the external body. A Healthy Diet Neutralizes Free Radicals Anti-oxidants are free-radical scavengers.

Free radicals are the product of chemical reactions in the body and are normally neutralized by anti-oxidants before they can create cellular damage. Toxins from the environment, smoking and pesticides also need to be neutralized as they increase the free-radical burden on the body. Omega-3 fatty acids are found, in varying amounts, in fish, nuts and seeds.

BPA-Free Plastic: Is It Really Safer? Think Again...

Plastics Manufacturers Are Substituting BPA with BPS

e have all grown used to seeing the term “BPA-free,” right? We seem to think that if a water bottle or baby food container says “BPA-free,” then we are safe. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case.

• Intestinal Damage: A French animal study, using only onetenth the level of BPA previously deemed safe for humans, found that BPA caused the lining of the intestines to fail. This leads to the development of leaky gut, which leads to a whole host of problems.

Bisphenol, a Toxic Plasticizer

• Infertility and Reproductive Problems: Another animal study found that low doses of BPA impaired development of the egg cell involved during ovulation. BPA is an estrogen mimetic, meaning it binds to estrogen receptors in the body, causing a decrease in other important hormones like progesterone.

Consumers have become aware of the dangers of Bisphenol-A (BPA) in our plastic food and drink containers. BPA is a chemical compound that is used in many plastics to keep them from becoming too brittle. It’s cheap, it’s everywhere, and it’s a potent toxin. BPA disrupts our endocrine system. In layman’s terms, it messes up our hormones and our blood stream. We have known that it acts as an estrogen for a long time. In fact, it was actually used in the 1930s to fatten-up livestock and as an estrogen-replacement therapy, before we learned how very toxic it is.

Examples of the damage Bisphenol can cause: • Heart Disease: A study in England showed that the oxidative damage from BPA damages the lining of our blood vessels. Men with the highest levels of BPA in their urine had a 10% higher risk of heart disease.

• Erectile Dysfunction: A study in China on men with high exposure to BPA in the workplace found that they were four times more likely to have erectile issues and seven times more likely to have ejaculation issues. The BPA exposure was fifty times more than the average exposure in the U.S., but it shows that the chemical has a negative effect on male reproduction.

• Diabetes: BPA is linked to metabolic disorder, obesity, and diabetes. BPA causes an increase in insulin production from beta cells in the pancreas. High insulin levels impair the body’s ability to break down fat.

• Behavioral Problems in Children: Recent studies found that children exposed to BPA from their baby bottles were more aggressive and hyperactive. BPA has been found in umbilical cord blood of newborns, meaning that a mother’s exposure to BPA can be passed to the child even before he or she is born.

Sounds like we should keep BPA out of the plastics we use in food, right? Although the United States and Canada have banned BPA in baby bottles, only Canada has listed the chemical as a toxin.

It looks like we have a ways to go before its use is more restricted.

The Bait and Switch: BPA has an Evil Twin—BPS It gets worse. Instead of BPA, plastic manufacturers are using a similar chemical called Bisphenol-S, also known as BPS. Like BPA, BPS mimics estrogen and causes damaging hormonal effects as well as oxidative damage. Not as much is known of the toxicity of this chemical, but Environmental Science and Technology says that BPS has a “comparable potency” to BPA. Worse yet, BPS is less biodegradable, meaning it sticks around in the environment and in our bodies much longer than BPA.

While our attention is focused only on BPA, equally, if not more dangerous plastics, with compounds like BPS, are being produced.

In fact, there are more than a dozen different types of Bisphenol used in plastics manufacturing today.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, an Illinois osteopathic physician and New York Times best-selling author, “[T]here’s also Bisphenol AB and Af, Bisphenol B and BP, Bisphenol C, Bisphenol E, f, G, M, S, P, PH, TMC and, yes, there’s even a Bisphenol Z. Any one of these can be in your BPA-free baby bottle or sippy cup, unfortunately.”

What Should We Do with This Information?

It looks like our plastic food containers and drinking bottles are laden with a virtual alphabet soup of chemicals. We may never know what’s in them, and if they’re safe. Take a precautionary principle to reduce your exposure: don’t heat anything in plastic, don’t put acidic foods in plastic, and use glass, ceramic, or stainless steel whenever possible. Be informed, and understand that when something says “free,” it means you’re definitely paying for something else.

What is the Immune System?

Experts often speak of the immune system, but how many truly understand just what it is and why it is important to maintain it? The very complex immune system, which plays a direct role in allergies and infectious and autoimmune diseases, is a collection of organs, cells, and tissues that work together to protect the body from disease caused mostly by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi (e.g., yeast).

The tonsils, lymph nodes, appendix, spleen, thymus gland (a small, butterfly-shaped organ between the breastplate and heart), and bone marrow are some critical components of this system. T-cells (immune system managers), B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages are some of the immunity cells that guard the body from foreign invaders.

Disease Prevention The immune system’s strength is critical to disease prevention.

Its breakdown results in the development of everything from colds and flu to heart disease and cancer. According to Thomas Levy, M.D., J.D., Vitamin C (also known as L-ascorbic acid) can stimulate the immune system’s natural antimicrobial and antitoxic properties.

The Conventional Approach Doesn’t Support Optimal Health

The federal government unfortunately only recommends 75 mg/ day of Vitamin C for adult women, and 90 mg/day for adult men.

Research proves that adults actually require much higher doses to realize the vast array of health benefits that Vitamin C offers. In fact, the recommended dietary allowance is only enough to pre24

When You Especially Need More Vitamin C Frederick Klenner, M.D., F.C.C.P., an early Vitamin C researcher, emphasized that physicians must recognize the many factors that increase the body’s demand for ascorbic acid, including: (1) aging; (2) poor habits/lifestyle (e.g., smoking, alcohol use); (3) inadequate/artificially induced sleep; (3) trauma (e.g., from pathogens, work, accidents, surgery); (4) weak kidneys; (5) toxic environment (including pesticide exposure); (6) drugs; (7) season of the year; (8) low absorption, loss, and inadequate intake of nutrients; and (10) overweight/obesity.

According to Thomas Levy, M.D., J.D., more than 70 years of clinical research has established these numerous life-enhancing and life-extending benefits of high-dose Vitamin C: (1) has cured acute hepatitis; (2) has rapidly cured mononucleosis, West Nile virus, and Dengue fever; (3) “exerts anticancer activity” and is a highly effective cancer therapy (provides “effective cancer chemotherapy,” especially when administered intravenously); (4) protects against atherosclerosis and heart disease mortality; and (5) guards against the development of diabetes. Some clinical research has also proven this vitamin’s ability to reduce the incidence and shorten the duration of colds, especially when combined with zinc gluconate.

Dr. Levy has commented on allopathic doctors’ obligation to treat patients with ascorbic acid: “any physician . . . claiming that Vitamin C is experimental, unapproved, and/or posing unwarranted risks . . . is really only demonstrating a complete . . . ignorance and/or denial of the scientific literature, and a serious question as to what the real motivations might be in the withholding of such therapy then arises. . . . [I] gnorance of medical fact is ultimately no sound defense for a doctor withholding valid treatment, especially when that information can be easily accessed.”

Safety, Sources, Types & Doses Raw fruits and vegetables are the best food sources of Vitamin C, including red/green peppers, broccoli, strawberries, citrus fruits, and Brussels sprouts. Contrary to general public belief, fruit juices are not a good source in that they provide less Vitamin C than pure sugar, which directly undermines immunity.

As for Vitamin C supplements, there is no known toxic dosage in patients without preexisting kidney disease. Also, the intake of high doses does not increase the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones, but actually lowers kidney stone occurrence.

With respect to the acidity (relatively weak) of ascorbic acid, Orthomolecular.org (of whose editorial review board Dr. Levy is a member with nine other experts) offers this information: (1) since ordinary chewables can etch the teeth, buffered chewable Vitamin C or tablets/capsules are recommended; (2) mega doses of Vitamin C (e.g., 1,000-3,000 mg every 20 minutes) can cause heartburn, and lower yet still excessive doses (beyond bowel tolerance) can cause loose stools or diarrhea; (3) those with sensitive digestive systems should use buffered ascorbate. It is somewhat controversial whether Ester-C® calcium ascorbate (a patented, buffered/pH-neutral, fatsoluble form of Vitamin C) is superior to ordinary ascorbic acid.

However, Ester-C® has been clinically shown to enter cells faster and retain its potency longer than other forms of Vitamin C.

A 500-3,000 mg Maintenance Dose Appropriate Vitamin C dosing depends on the reason it is ingested. An adult daily maintenance dose can range from 500 – 3,000 mg. More can be taken to bowel tolerance (or intravenously) when the immune system is under fire. Ascorbic acid should be taken in divided doses throughout the day so that it remains in the system.

Given its natural antihistamine effect, a patient suffering from nasal congestion should not take it in high doses.

Conclusion With proper guidance from an experienced holistic practitioner, nutritional supplements such as Vitamin C, diet, and healthy lifestyle changes, can together enhance and extend life. It is critical not only to take the right supplements, but also the right doses, in the right way, for an adequate time period.

Integrative Health and the Five Levels of Healing

I

believe that health and wellness are created by a balance in five realms: the spiritual, energetic, psychosocial, emotional, and physical. Our bodies are wonderfully able to adapt to imbalances, and often this occurs without any conscious awareness. Our bodies often get our attention by creating physical manifestations of these imbalances, and give us an opportunity to listen to the underlying messages. My approach is to go beyond the symptoms to explore the root causes, understand the downstream effects, and discover what is needed for each person to create a deeper level of healing.

By combining the art and science of medicine with the wisdom and intuition of the inner healer, true balance can be restored.

Janice (not her real name) first came to me complaining of fatigue, a lack of energy and a need for caffeine to get through the day, not sleeping well despite feeling exhausted at the end of the day, feeling stuck, and overall just feeling “off” without any specific reason she could identify. She also was frustrated with the weight she had gained around the middle, and nothing she did seemed to help. She had been to her regular doctor, who told her everything was “fine” with her exam and routine blood work, and that she was probably just depressed and a pill would fix that.

She felt her marriage was okay, had not had sex much lately but neither of them seemed to care as they were both exhausted and overwhelmed with daily life. When asked about passion in her life, she drew a blank. Come to think of it, she couldn’t think of a time in recent years when she felt much of anything other than the rollercoaster of anger, frustration, anxiety, hopelessness, and the tears that would spring up out of nowhere.

As Janice and I worked together to get to the underlying causes, it was clear that many systems were stressed, and as a result her health was suffering. She did not need a pill to ‘fix’ her; she needed 26

a comprehensive plan to heal. We looked at all five elements to help her identify the stressors that were creating the imbalances, then changed what she had control over, gave her tools to modify her responses to the ones that she could not change, and restored her health.

Here is how we did that: Physical: Her lab work showed several vitamin and mineral deficiencies, systemic inflammation, prediabetes, and slightly high cholesterol. Her thyroid was slightly low, and her adrenal glands were depleted, and her hormones were out of balance. She had several food sensitivities and her gut was irritated and not working properly. We restored the vitamins and minerals to optimal levels with supplements, and changed her diet, eliminating foods her body did not tolerate and adding foods to supply nutrients she needed.

Her hormones were rebalanced by supporting her system with a combination of herbs and natural hormones, in addition to removing many sources of stress. She started a gentle yoga class once a week, and gradually added walking three times a week as her energy improved. In three months she had lost 10 pounds without dieting, her skin and hair looked healthier, and she felt better than she had in years. Her blood sugar, cholesterol, and hormone imbalances also greatly improved.

Emotional: We explored the fact that she did not like to feel angry, and with her increasing frustration she just kept pushing down the feelings she judged as being bad. She learned to recognize her different feelings and acknowledge them with less judgment, and in doing so she was able to feel them without being overwhelmed by them; they no longer had so much control over her. Feelings just are; they do not need to be explained. She found herself feeling much calmer, and when she did get angry or sad it wasn’t so scary.

Psychosocial: She often tended to everyone’s needs but her own, and in doing so developed behavior patterns that did not support her own growth and health. As she began to see how putting her own needs last did not serve her or anyone around her, she slowly began to shift. This initially created more difficulties at home, and although it was complicated at first, she found it freeing to be able to change and not be responsible for everyone else. She developed more intimate relationships with her husband and girlfriends, as she allowed them to see the real Janice. This helped ease the sense of loss she felt since her daughter moved away, and she was able to create a social network that supported her.

Energetic: Her first and third chakras were out of balance, and this was related in part to some of the recent losses in her family. We worked with her chakra fields, both with energetic healing as well as the yoga and meditation. Colors and sounds also helped support healing of the chakras and energy bodies. The energy flowed more smoothly, and healing followed.

Spiritual: Janice had many belief systems that she had developed over the years; many from childhood that were not even in her awareness. As we explored these, she chose to shift several that no longer served her highest good. We also supported reconnecting to her higher self, her core essence, and the knowledge that she is not alone. Life was not always hard, and was meant to be lived with joy.

As she began to trust this inner knowing, her stress levels decreased and she felt much more at ease.

During the first three months, Janice made significant changes in her life on all levels; some were easier and some were more challenging. Boost Thyroid Function and Immunity with Exercise and Stress Reduction

egular exercise and stress reduction can act as kindling for your thyroid. As the igniter of metabolism, the thyroid gland regulates energy production in the body. It also responds to stress by lowering carbohydrate metabolism, and it modulates activities of great importance including immune function.

Energy Production The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that is spread across your throat, crossing just below the Adam’s apple. Glands produce substances, including hormones, for use elsewhere in the body. For example, the adrenal gland makes cortisol and an ovary produces estrogen. Hormones emitted from the thyroid gland are responsible for making sure that all cells in the body have enough oxygen and are producing adequate energy. Boosting thyroid function can be accomplished through health choices like engaging in a regular exercise practice and coping effectively with stress.

Weight gain and exhaustion are two common features of an underactive thyroid. Deficient metabolism is associated with many factors including the following: • Sedentary lifestyle • Lack of good quality sleep • Nutrient deficiencies including zinc, selenium, vit. D, and iodine • Chronic stress • Chronic inflammation • Toxic exposures including halides and heavy metals

Low to Moderate Intensity Exercise is the Key Exercise can increase the amount of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream and thereby increase metabolism. By increasing the need for energy production in muscles, exercise stimulates metabolism. Regular, low- to moderate-intensity exercise is the key to proper thyroid function.

There are a few specific considerations. The intensity of exercise has to be low to moderate. It is commonly understood that aerobic exercise protects against heart disease but intense exercise like training for a marathon impedes thyroid function and slows metabolism.

Exercising in moderation five times weekly increases thyroid hormone blood levels, which then boosts metabolism.

Eat a Healthy Snack Before or After Exercise Another consideration is diet. Modern medicine recognizes that as long as energy expenditure exceeds that of calorie intake, a loss of body weight must occur. Basically, to lose weight, one needs to burn more calories than consumed.

However, it is important not to restrict calories to the point where the body feels like it is starving and slows metabolism. Severely decreased caloric intake leads to lower thyroid function whereas stimulating the thyroid gland will enable you to burn more calories.

To allow the body to increase metabolism, the best advice is to eat a healthy, antioxidant-rich snack within a few hours of exercise.

Stress Reduction Is there a psycho-emotional piece to underactive thyroid that can be addressed through reducing stress? Thyroid hormone levels are not static but in constant fluctuation in response to signals released during stress. Stress interferes with proper functioning of hormones in general and chronic stress lowers metabolism. Since stress blocks thyroid activity, anything one can do to decrease stress could potentially increase metabolism.

Yoga and Tai Chi To combat the negative effects of stress on the thyroid gland, choose an exercise that emphasizes the mind-body interaction.

Which form of low- to moderate-intensity exercise has the most impact on stress management and potential to boost thyroid function? Any form of movement is better than a sedentary lifestyle but the benefits of yoga and tai chi extend well beyond the traditional benefits of exercise. Regular exercise reduces stress, anxiety, and depression but yoga and tai chi also instill a sense of wellbeing well known in medicine to be associated with optimal health. Yoga and tai chi are both recommended for management of chronic disease, as well as for a wide variety of complaints including hypertension, balance issues, pain, anxiety and depression.

Interestingly, yoga and tai chi were both developed in systems of medicine that are marked by a fundamental understanding of body energy flow. Whether you call it Prana or Qi (Chi), the life force inside a person, or the ‘will,’ is clearly a force in health. Both

types of exercise have components that are forms of meditation and somehow tap into a deep level of health. Yogis are known for their ability to increase body temperature at will. It is truly amazing that people can heat themselves up through a learned practice.

The demonstrated ability of yoga practice to increase body temperature implies a stimulation of the thyroid gland. Yoga is unique in that it focuses on your breath and posture leaving you with an inner feeling of peace or calmness. Tai chi also focuses on deep diaphragmatic breathing through a series of slow, graceful movements that encourages proper flow of energy. Both yoga and tai chi can be done at home and require very little, if any, investment in equipment.

The most important thing you can do to improve thyroid function is exercise regularly. A yoga or tai chi practice provides the intensity of exercise associated with boosting thyroid hormones and offers ideal stress management.

Are All Calories the Same?

alories in, calories out.” This conventional wisdom from nutritionists, weight-loss experts, fitness coaches, and even physicians is uniform—to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. Sounds reasonable. After all, the advice is based on the time-tested physics principles of the Laws of Thermodynamics.

However, as is so often the case, Conventional Wisdom misses the mark.

Let’s be honest. If losing weight was as simple as burning more calories than we eat, as easy as exercising more and eating less, then the gyms and fitness centers would be full of lean, lithe people, and there would be much less of an obesity problem.

Of course we know otherwise. What person is there, struggling with a weight issue, who has not tried eating less, exercising more, or doing both, with little to show for his or her efforts?

Calories and the Laws of Thermodynamics The problem is that few scientific principles have been misappropriated and misapplied more than the first two Laws of Thermodynamics when it comes to nutrition.

The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed—it remains constant in a system. If energy can’t be created or destroyed, then it stands to reason that a calorie is always a calorie, that all calories are the same. That’s where the second law comes in.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that it is impossible for a system to turn a given amount of energy into an equal amount of work.

These two laws of thermodynamics can be summed up thusly: The first law says you can’t get something for nothing, and the second law tells you that you can’t break even.

It is the second law that is most described as the “a calorie is a calorie” law, when, in fact, the second law shows, in terms of weight loss at least, that all calories are not necessarily the same.

And herein lies the rub: We don’t convert calories to energy on a one-to-one basis because energy is dissipated or lost to the universe as described by the second law.

Look at it another way. It takes energy to drive the infinite chemical reactions that sustain life. Some of this energy is perpetually lost due to the second law. Therefore, a large portion of the energy available in a certain number of calories cannot be converted

to meaningful work and is lost.

The more chemical reactions that take place, the more energy is lost to the environment.

Take another example. Only 10 to 12% of the energy in a gallon of gas is used to drive the car. The rest is lost to heat. The same principle applies to biological reactions.

Macronutrients and Calories Macronutrients—proteins, carbohydrates, and fats—all obviously contain calories. The problem with the “calories in, calories out” mantra, however, is that the body does not treat the calories from each macronutrient the same way.

Glucose is the elemental sugar that the body burns for energy.

Carbohydrates (which are simply sugar molecules linked together in varying chain lengths) are broken down to glucose by the body with relatively little effort. Therefore, while some energy is lost during the process, it’s a rather small amount.

But converting proteins or fats to glucose requires a much more intense process, involving more reactions and a lot more energy. The process is much less efficient, and therefore much more energy is lost in the process.

This efficiency in calorie burning can be determined by measuring the metabolic rate, or what is known as the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). And, in fact, such a study was recently published.

Researchers looked at the effect of three different diets on REE. Subjects were put on either a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet (60% of energy from carbohydrate, 20% from fat, 20% from protein; high glycemic load), a moderate fat/moderate carbohydrate diet (40% from carbohydrate, 40% from fat, and 20% from protein; moderate glycemic load), and very low-carbohydrate diet (10% from carbohydrate, 60% from fat, and 30% from protein; low glycemic load) in random order, each for four weeks. (Source: JAMA, June 27, 2012, Vol 307, No. 24.)

A key point in this study is that all three diets contained the exact same amount of calories; 2000 each.

At the end of the study researchers found that the dieters on the high-carbohydrate diet had the greatest decrease in REE, while those on the high-protein diet had the least decrease in REE. In other words, even though the calories eaten were the same, the high-carbohydrate diet resulted in the most unfavorable effect on metabolism (slowed it down the most) while the high-protein diet had the most favorable effect.

This study proved what Dr. Atkins and other contrarian weight-loss experts have argued for years, namely that not all calories are the same, and that a high-carbohydrate diet has a greater negative effect on the body than does a low-carbohydrate higher-protein diet.

Summary The problem with applying laws of physics to human systems is that biological systems are not machines. Our bodies are dynamic organisms, constantly adjusting and adapting to our environment, and the energy we consume in the form of calories is diverse also. So the Laws of Thermodynamics cannot be applied the same way to human systems as to mechanical systems.

As Michael Eades, MD writes in his blog, “Bear all this in mind the next time you tell someone that it is possible to lose more weight on a greater number of calories as long as those calories are low-carb calories, and that someone pooh-poohs you with the old ‘That can’t be possible. It violates the laws of thermodynamics. A calorie is after all a calorie.’ Ask them precisely which laws of thermodynamics it violates and ask them to tell you how. Then sit back and watch the fun.”

Eliminate Your Barriers to Good Health

f I ask someone if they think that emotions can affect them physically, the response is always an immediate “yes”. Likewise, I get the same response when I ask if how they feel physically affects them emotionally. No surprises here. Everyone gets this on some level.

“Anything can cause anything” is sort of a mantra in the holistic healthcare world.

There is a constant dance, an interaction of structure and energy, that keeps the body attempting to do what is was designed to do, which is survive. This balancing act plays out on many levels, those known to us and those not yet discovered. Ill health is the result of interferences to this balance from many possible sources.

Health is defined three ways in Medilexicon’s Medical Dictionary 1. The state of the organism when it functions optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality.

2. The state of dynamic balance in which an individual’s or a group’s capacity to cope with all the circumstances of living is an optimal level.

3. The state characterized by anatomic, physiologic, psychologi- cal integrity, ability to perform personally, valued family, work and community roles; ability to deal with physical, biologic, psychosocial and social stress, a feeling of well-being and a freedom of the risk of disease and untimely death.

According to the World Health Organization’s classic definition: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Now that we looked at the definition of health let’s look at some of the possible interferences to health. I refer to these interferences as barriers or stressors, since they interfere with and add stress to the body, causing an imbalance.

Eight Primary Barriers to Health The more common barriers or stressors to healing are: 1. Food allergies/intolerances People are increasingly suffering from allergies or intolerances to certain foods. If you yourself do not have a food allergy you probably know someone who does. The most common food allergies are: - Wheat/gluten, especially if unsprouted or genetically modified.

- Pasteurized dairy products.

- Soy foods, especially if unfermented.

- Sugar.

2. Heavy metal toxicities There are many heavy metal toxicities, however the most common are mercury, aluminum, arsenic and lead.

3. Chemical toxicities These include acetates and acetones, dry cleaning chemicals, food colorings, fragrances, heavy chemicals, hydrocarbons, medications, pesticides, petroleum solvents, plastics, food preservatives, with chlorine and formaldehyde being the most commonly found.

4. Immune challenges - Viral - Bacterial - Yeast/fungal - Parasites 5. Surgical scars Surgical scars may cause interferences in the sympathetic nervous system. Besides surgical and injury scars, tattoos, piercings, vaccination scars, episiotomy, tooth extractions, stretch marks, acne and chicken pox scars may be involved. The most commonly found are those on the mid line of the body such as episiotomy, umbilicus and C-Section surgical scars.

6. Structural interferences Including vertebral subluxations and other skeletal and softtissue imbalances including nerves, muscles, ligaments, organs and glands.

7. Electromagnetic frequencies Includes dirty electricity, cell phones, computers, Wi-fi, etc.

8. Emotions/stress We are well aware that emotions can make us feel bad but they also can affect the course of our lives if not handled and processed.

Some would argue that trapped emotions are involved either directly or indirectly in all or nearly all diseases.

An estimated 75 to 90% of visits to primary care physicians are now related to the effects of stress. Trapped emotions become chronic stress when carried for years.

The single most upsetting event in an individuals’ life can be the death of a loved one. Grieving is a natural and necessary process and the range of emotions one goes through can be overwhelming.

Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time, however some emotions can fail to be processed. For example shock, despair, sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, blame, panic, depression, and fear are commonly associated with the grieving process.

In addition to emotional pain, countless people are dealing with physical aches and pains. Sometimes we can pinpoint a physical traumatic event that caused the pain initially, however, quite frequently the problems just seem to develop for no apparent reason.

Carrie has been a patient of mine off and on for many years and in the past would usually have complaints of a mild flare-up of neck pain due to degenerative arthritis. One day after not seeing her for a couple of years she came to my office complaining of neck pain again, however this time it had been going on for many months and was beginning to worsen. I tested her to see if her symptoms were being caused by trapped emotions and the answer her body gave me was “yes.” Continuing to test, I determined that the trapped emotion was “crying” and that the emotion had become trapped approximately one year ago. At this point she decided to share her story. She confided that her husband had passed away a year ago and although she deeply mourned the loss, she had never cried at all. We released the trapped emotion of crying from her body and she immediately

felt significant relief from her neck pain and could move her head freely again. When she returned a week later for follow-up, she was back to her normal self again. She informed me that following her previous visit, “I went home and cried and cried and cried for two days. It all came out.” She had moved ahead significantly in her grieving process and now feels she can move on with her life again.

Granted, this is a dramatic example of how trapped emotions can affect you physically. Typically processing a released emotion is not as dramatic or intense as Carrie’s was. Usually there is a much more subtle change in symptoms when a trapped emotion is released.

-Buddha The other side of the coin is how our physical state can influence our emotions. Ask any woman if pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) affects them emotionally. The imbalance of the hormonal system varies from tension, irritability, mood swings and crying spells to anxiety and depression. Even mild dehydration can affect mood.

When you are hurting and experiencing physical discomfort, for example low back pain, does it affect your mood? Are you fun to be around and having a good time?

And the seemingly ever present sugar contributes to anxiety, hyperactivity, depression and difficulty concentrating (along with more than 150 other known ways it can negatively affect your health).

New research has revealed that chronic stress is causative to accelerated telomere shortening. Telomeres are protective DNA molecules. Patients with depression-related stress are found to have telomeres more than 5% shorter than those without depression and the shortening of telomeres is associated with accelerated aging.

The effects of stress can be diverse and can create or contribute to an imbalance in cortisol, glucose, insulin, and immune activity, and can cause adrenal fatigue, altered brain function and inflammation.

Obviously the effects of chronic stress can significantly impact a person’s health.

FOLIC ACID A Key Nutrient Throughout Life

F

olic acid, also known as folate or Vitamin B9, is a nutritional powerhouse which influences health and development from day-one of life through our senior years. It is essential for the normal growth of cells and is needed for providing energy.

Deficiencies of this important nutrient can cause anemia and birth defects, and are linked to cancer, heart disease, digestive complaints, and kidney impairments, among a host of other disorders.

Birth Defects One key function of folate is in the creation of DNA and RNA, so it is of critical importance for the production and division of new cells. As a result, when a mom-tobe is low in folic acid, that deficiency can affect the chance of a child being born with a neural tube defect such as spina bifida. In utero, the neural tube helps form the brain and spinal cord, and when it does not close properly, as can happen when folate is low, brain and spinal cord defects are more likely to occur. For this reason, prenatal vitamins are fortified with additional folic acid.

Anemia Another important role for folate is in the development of red blood cells. When folic acid is low, these cells do not divide properly and cannot deliver oxygen to the body as needed. This causes a type of anemia that is not iron related, but still results in fatigue and other similar symptoms. It is important for any healthcare practitioner to be able to distinguish between an iron deficiency vs. a folate deficiency when assessing for anemia.

Dementia, Osteoporosis, Heart Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease A true multitasker, folic acid also is essential for normal processing of a compound called homocysteine. Homocysteine is usually part of a cycle which produces agents that help our bodies detoxify, maintains normal circulation, and can impact brain function. Without folic acid, homocysteine gets blocked and can not proceed to the next step. High homocysteine levels in blood are implicated in heart disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and impaired excretion of

toxins. Elevated homocysteine levels are also linked to increases in fractures from osteoporosis. Since dementia, osteoporosis and heart disease all can result from a lack of dietary folate, it is possible that these diseases of the elderly may well be linked, and could be ameliorated by insuring there is adequate folic acid in the diet.

Depression, Cognitive Decline and Irritability In addition to folate’s gestational effects on the brain, folate plays a role in the daily functioning of brain messengers called neurotransmitters, which affect our mood and behavior. Low folic-acid levels have been correlated with depression, cognitive decline and irritability.

Cell Regeneration and Cancer All cells have a limited lifespan, and in order to regenerate they need folate. The cells with the quickest turnover, such as oral and intestinal cells, are most susceptible to low folic-acid levels. In addition, certain cancers have been tied to lower folate levels, and good folate status appears cancer protective. However, this picture is complicated by the fact that excessive supplementation with folic acid also has been linked to the growth of certain cancers. Since both cancer cells and healthy tissue need folate to grow, it may be that folic acid is important before the onset of cancer, but in the presence of cancer cells, it may actually promote increased proliferation.

Sources of Folate Folate is found naturally in leafy green vegetables, beans, peas, and liver. While orange juice and bananas are not as dense in folic acid, they are a more common source in the American diet. In addition, many grain products such as breads and cereals are forti36

fied with folic acid, as well as iron and other B vitamins. A few of the factors that inhibit normal blood folate levels include lack of dietary folate, poor absorption and inefficient processing. The typical American diet is not rich in leafy greens or legumes, making it more difficult to meet our basic dietary need for folate.

Medications can Interfere with Folate Absorption Many medications interfere with folate absorption (such as antacids, anti-reflux medications, some antibiotics, birth control medications, anticonvulsants, and some cholesterol-lowering medications). This, combined with the less-than-optimum typical American diet, makes it a wonder we are not all deficient. While many of these pharmaceuticals can be used at any age, seniors are often taking a combination of drugs that interfere with folate absorption.

However, excesses of folate can also cause similar symptoms, so it is best to get folate from dietary sources or limit supplementation to no more than 400-800mcg daily from a well-absorbed source. Try introducing this wonderful nutrient by serving dishes such as white bean and escarole soup, chili with beans, chopped liver, hummus or spinach and lentil soup. From our first day to our last, folate is a key nutrient in optimal health.

Emerging research also points to a genetic cause of poor folic acid status. Many people have an altered form of the gene (called a single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP) which controls the enzyme for folicacid processing that is less efficient than typical. In these people, dietary folate is less easily converted to the active form that the body needs for the mechanisms described above. When poor intake and multiple medications are combined with inefficient processing, poor folate stores is the likely result. The genetic SNP can easily be tested by a blood test for an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).

Prenatal Vitamins While standard prenatal vitamins contain folic acid, a select few brands include the more active forms of folate, called 5MTHF, to insure that pregnant women who may be unaware they carry this SNP are able to utilize folic acid as well as possible.

Forgetfulness, Depression, Gingivitis, Diarrhea Since folate is involved in so many biological processes, a deficiency can show up in a variety of ways. Because of its importance in brain function, low levels can cause forgetfulness, irritability and depression.
