MEADOWBROOK PARK UPDATE The City of Arlington has developed a Master Plan for Meadowbrook Park, Arlington’s first park that opened in 1924. In advance of the centennial celebration in 2024, Arlington Parks and Recreation contracted with Kimley-Horn and Associates in the preparation of the master plan. The existing park is approximately 52 acres. The final amenities for the park were determined by the City, consultant, stakeholder groups, and public through facilitated meetings, illustrated on the concept plan, and programmed into the final document. The scope of work for Kimley-Horn and Associates included physical site inventory and base map preparation, research history of park, research of comparable facilities, opportunities and constraints diagram, proposed programmatic plan, master plan development, stakeholder/public meetings, cost estimate and phasing diagram, and implementation plan. The phase-1 development portion of the project includes the construction of an all-inclusive destination playground. The playground is tentatively scheduled to open in fall 2024 to coincide with the centennial celebration. Outside of the destination playground, there is not a timeline or budget associated with any other park projects at Meadowbrook at this time. Current park amenities including Meadowbrook Recreation Center, will operate as scheduled until further development occurs in the future.

FITNESS FITNESS PACKAGES

Arlington Parks & Recreation offers a variety of monthly membership packages that allow residents and visitors to enjoy programs and amenities at all recreation, athletics and senior centers across The American Dream City. Monthly membership programs allow Arlington residents to participate in a wide range of Parks & Recreation’s programs at any center without paying additional fees as they would have under the previous membership program. Monthly memberships can be purchased for individuals or for a family of up to five people. Individual membership rates are based on the age of the participant and are discounted for adult residents over the age of 60. Family memberships for anyone living under the same roof up to five people. Additional family members would need to purchase individual membership packages based on age. Non-residents are also eligible to buy a Parks & Recreation monthly membership at a slightly higher cost than residents. Patrons can choose among three levels of membership, based on their needs and interests. For example, someone looking to swim laps at The East’s 113,000-gallon indoor pool or to take advantage of the indoor track at The Beacon may find the basic Blue membership to be the best fit for their fitness needs. A Green membership opens up access to weight room and cardio equipment at all centers. And the Gold membership provides patrons with discounts on select programs as well as the highest level of access to amenities and programs at all centers, including in-person and virtual fitness classes, roller skating at Elzie Odom, and on-site childcare for up to four children during visits at no extra cost. Ready to begin enjoying all the great amenities and programs that Arlington has to offer? Stop by any of the centers or the Parks & Recreation Administration Office, 717 W. Main St., to sign up today. You can also purchase a membership online; naturallyfun.org. For questions or help, please call the Admin Office at 817-459-5474 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

With park fees, bonds, and other sources of income, we’re able to renovate and create facilities to fit your needs. MINERAL WELL PUBLIC PLAZA

The City plans to rebuild history with this addition, expected to be completed in summer 2023. This project will restore the famous Mineral Well that was torn down in 1951. This well is central to Arlington’s development and collective memory. As a result of this well and other historic buildings being torn down during the mid 1900’s, the Arlington community suffers from a disconnect with its historic past. Historic places and symbols are not well known to residents born outside of the city, and this is in part due to the limited number of recognizable cultural landmarks & lack of awareness of existing cultural landmarks. Recreating this historic well provides a platform to tell the story of one of the city’s most foundational places now lost to time. This Public Plaza development project will benefit both Arlington residents and heritage tourism efforts.

The project will be funded through the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and Arlington Parks and Recreation Department (APRD). APRD will operate and maintain the fountain and seek operating and maintenance funding in the City’s general fund budget to support these efforts. The City completed Competitive Sealed Proposal process of procurement for selecting the contractor. A selection committee conducted an evaluation process and selected a contractor who was deemed most qualified for this project. Construction began October 2022, with a dedication ceremony details to follow soon in summer 2023.

The project goal is to provide a public gathering place to memorialize the historic Mineral Well, through creation of a strong focal point and visual terminus for the view looking eastward down W. Main St. The proposed site is located at the west end of the plaza situated between City Hall and the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. The scope of work includes construction of a public plaza. The plaza will include focal point elements such as the architectural clock tower with art work, sculpted by a local artist, water feature, seating areas and sculptural elements that memorialize the Mineral Well.

ROTARY DREAM SCULPTURE

The Rotary Club of Arlington commemorated its centennial by donating “Boundless,” a new interactive public art piece in Downtown Arlington for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. The Rotary Club held a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the sculpture June 10 at the future site of Rotary Dream Park. The sculpture celebrates the Rotary Club of Arlington’s 100 years of dedication, vision, and involvement with the community, including its pivotal role in the creation and evolution of the parks system in Arlington. Dr. Victoria Farrar-Myers, the Rotary Club of Arlington’s president, said Boundless captures this year’s Rotary International theme of “Imagine.” While the vertical element of the sculpture represents an homage to the iconic Rotary emblem, the sculpture itself was created to inspire Arlington residents and visitors to imagine the boundless possibilities available in The American Dream City. The large, leaning gear-shaped sculpture features infinity mirrors on both sides that light up in hundreds of colors as visitors interact with it. “Imagination is boundless, and this interactive sculpture invites you to use your imagination. It’s an amazing kaleidoscope of color and I think it will bring joy to people of any age,” Dr. 40

Farrar-Myers said. “I would love to see our Rotarians and residents alike come out and celebrate the dedication of this beautiful public art piece, which will help serve as a gateway to welcome people to Downtown Arlington. ‘Boundless’ is our gift to the City, but more importantly it’s a symbol of the Rotary Club of Arlington’s commitment to serve and inspire others for generations to come.”

Rotary Dream Park is designed to create a new public gathering space Downtown and to connect new developments along Front and Division streets to the vibrant Downtown core south of the railroad tracks. Upon completion of the park in fall 2024, the site will also become home to the DREAM sculpture that is currently on display near Levitt Pavilion Arlington. The Downtown Arlington Management Corporation (DAMC) is donating the DREAM sculpture to the City to be included in the new park. “Public art installations, like Boundless, enrich our lives. They provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life and invite us to pause and reflect and engage with our surroundings,” City Council

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L L Y F U N . O R G

District 5 Representative Rebecca Boxall said during the ceremony.

The future Rotary Dream Park is located at Center and Front streets north of the Union Pacific train tracks. The City acquired the land for the park thanks to a 1999 agreement with AT&T, formerly Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, who contributed the funds used for the park’s acquisition. “The dedication of the Rotary sculpture is the next step in realizing the longterm vision of Rotary Dream Park. Many partners have helped us get to this point, from the Rotary Club of Arlington and their generous gift that enabled this unique new piece of art by Jen Lewin, to our partnership with DAMC to relocate the DREAM sculpture next year, to the legacy gift of AT&T providing the funds to make the land acquisition possible,” Parks and Recreation Director James Orloski said. “The end result of everyone’s vision and hard work will be that Downtown will have a new anchor and a community space like no other when Rotary Dream Park is completed next year.”

ACTIVE ADULT CENTER The facility, which will offer a variety of programs and amenities for adults ages 50 and older, is set to open in winter 2024. The center will be located off Green Oaks Boulevard, just east of the Fire Training Center and on the site of the Pierce Burch Water Treatment Plant. Arlington voters approved funding to build the center in a special bond election in May 2017. Amenities of the recreation center are expected to include a full-court gymnasium that can host sports such as basketball, volleyball and pickleball, an indoor pool for water exercise and leisure, a fitness area, walking track, multi-purpose rooms for educational programs, events or passive activities, special events space, an outdoor patio, outdoor pickleball courts and a community garden. All amenities and program offerings will be determined by final project budget. “This is the facility that our active adult population needs and deserves and we are excited to bring it to them,” Parks and Recreation Director James Orloski said.

Beginning with the opening of Meadowbrook Park nearly 100 years ago, Arlington has consistently promoted a high quality of life and championed great parks and recreational opportunities, Parks Board Chair Ron Smith said during Monday’s event. The City’s newest recreational facility will offer residents a wide range of opportunities to strengthen both their physical and mental wellbeing, he said. “The Active Adult Center will serve as a community wellness hub, providing comprehensive programs, services and spaces that dismantle systemic barriers to health and wellness,” Smith said. The City of Arlington offers multigenerational programming at its five recreation centers: Dottie Lynn, Cliff Nelson, The Beacon, Elzie Odom Athletic Center and the East Library and Recreation Center. Information about membership prices will be available closer to the opening of the Active Adult Center, but Orloski said residents should expect fees to be in line with the City’s other

MEMORIALS AT VETERANS PARK Collaborating with the Walton Walker Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Arlington Veterans Park Foundation will complete a Korean War Memorial and Korean Defense Veterans Memorial (KWKDVM) and a Memorial to the Fallen (MTTF) in Arlington Veterans Park. The KWKDVM will consist of five black granite columns placed inside a circular pedestrian area enclosed by a seating wall. Four of the columns will recognize the military service branches that served in the Korean conflict. The center column contains a map of the Korean Peninsula. In the center of the memorial, a bronze kneeling military figure faces the granite columns. The water feature and star in the original Master Plan was replaced in the revised plan with paving consisting of a granite star inside a circle. The existing initial memorial and the Vietnam War memorials surround this star, as would the KWKDVM and MTTF memorials and any future memorials. A five-sided granite memorial will contain the names of all the Arlington residents who have died in the nation’s service during times of war. The Arlington Historical Society has an ongoing project to find all the names of the fallen from Arlington. The Arlington Veterans Park Foundation is the coordinating entity for the memorial area. The foundation and the Korean War Veterans contracted with Parkhill for design services. The foundation paid the majority portion (62.5%) of the contract to design the Korean War memorial and the Memorial to the Fallen (Master Plan Revision). The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation awarded $701,765 to the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department for the project. APRD will operate and maintain the memorials and seek operating and maintenance funding in the City’s general fund budget to support these efforts. Design development commenced December 2021. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2023, with an anticipated project completion date of November/December 2023. *Rendering

Arlington Golf and the Texas Rangers have partnered to build the world’s only Major League Baseball-branded golf course — the Texas Rangers Golf Club — which opened in February 2019. This collaborative branding partnership, along with $24 million in course renovations, affords the opportunity for Arlington to offer a destination golf course for both Arlington residents and visitors alike.

Welcome to Home Plate at Texas Rangers Golf Club. Founded in 2021, the full service restaurant and bar is open to the public daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Patrons will enjoy a made-from-scratch menu and 10 beers on tap, paired with spectacular golf course vistas. Wall-to-wall TVs for your sports viewing pleasure, including 31 TVs within the restaurant and bar alone.

“As the world’s only MLB-themed golf course, this course is sure to be a ‘bucket list’ item for baseball fans across the globe, especially our Rangers fan right here in Arlington,” Mayor Jeff Williams said.

Expansive covered patio overlooking the golf course is the perfect spot for al fresco dining. Customers can also enjoy cocktails at one of the many outdoor patio seating areas on the events lawn overlooking the golf course.

The golf club is open to the public seven days a week. Texas Rangers Golf Club is the closest 18-hole golf course to Arlington’s Entertainment District, offering a chance to play golf in conjunction with a visit to a Dallas Cowboys or Texas Rangers Game, TexasLive!, or the numerous other events at AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Park, UTA or downtown Arlington. A $24 million project, Texas Rangers Golf Club involved a total renovation and updated routing of the existing golf course with improved turf grasses and additional water features. A new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse, which opening in early 2020, features a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms, and numerous rental and event spaces.

Newly renovated, It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas, and the first municipal course in the world, to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998 and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has hosted many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament. Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the Metroplex for three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

Trade the typical parking lot views of other restaurants for Ventana Grille and the sights and sounds of Tierra Verde Golf Club — the first Audubon Signature Sanctuary golf course in Texas — where golf, dining and nature come together. Chefs Brandon Green and James Martone invite you to come enjoy their culinary creations! Open to the public daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offering a takeout menu, Ventana Grille’s affordable options makes it the perfect place for your next meal. Ideally located less than three miles from I-20 off US 287, Ventana Grille is an excellent place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a couple of drinks after your round of golf. It’s also a great quick casual lunch spot for you and your co-workers, and the ideal setting to celebrate your next special event. The kitchen is open daily from 6:30 AM to 9 PM and features Avid Golfer’s ‘Best Breakfast Burrito’ and daily lunch specials under $15. Be sure to visit ArlingtonGolf.com to see a list of upcoming events at Ventana Grille. Whether you are attending one of our special holiday functions, Date Night dinners, or are just enjoying a meal away from home, Ventana Grille promises to be a delight to the taste buds. Catering, wedding receptions, private parties, to-go orders and special requests are welcome. Take the stress off and let us handle the details for your upcoming event. Lake Arlington Golf Course is a beautiful, 18-hole facility nestled on 185 acres on the north shore of Lake Arlington. The course was designed with all types of players in mind. With the newly renovated fairways and greens, the course provides a great golfing experience at an exceptional value. Lake Arlington’s time-honored design blends open and tree-lined fairways, long challenging par 3’s and scenic greens to appeal to every level of player. A challenge for the professional as well as the beginner, the four sets of tees, ranging from 5,485 yards to 6,637 yards, provides a fair playing field that appeals to every level. The clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop and grill. Lake Arlington’s combination of enjoyable golf, convenient location and professional staff create the perfect setting for group outings and tournaments.

56

MEADOWBROOK PARK

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled, nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course offers challenging golf along with a practice putting green and chipping area at an exceptional value.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

A Ralph Plummer design, the course was renovated in 1998 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player.

Avid Golfer voted Lake Arlington the most kid-friendly course in DFW in 2013, while the layout garnered a Top-50 public course ranking in the publication too.

The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.

PGA Head Professional Michael Berneburg and his staff offer golf lessons for all ages and ability levels. Call 817-451-6101 for rates and availability.

With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!
