Combining Art and Culture

T

he Entertainment District Sculpture Trail was conceptualized in 2011 when Super Bowl XLV was hosted in Arlington, Texas. A few years later, this idea is now a beautiful reality. Spanning the length of both the Richard Greene Linear Park and Robert Cluck Linear Park, art and nature combine into something extraordinary. With a beautiful backdrop of Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium, the Sculpture Trail provides a unique combination of art, nature and architecture that can only be found in The American Dream City.

“There’s a lot of interest in getting Arlington more involved in arts and culture. This is one way to do that,” said Gary Packan, Parks and Recreation Assistant Director. “It’s also an opportunity for people to come explore our trails and see something different.”

Arlington added nine new sculptures this spring as part of phase two of the master plan. Each sculpture will remain on display for three years and then will be rotated out to showcase new pieces.

This phase of the trail was underwritten by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. Many works can be purchased from the artist directly, go to NaturallyFun.org, for more information.

Plans for the park also include an aluminum Unity Arch sculpture that symbolizes the passion, dedication, and unwavering spirit of the people of Arlington. The Unity Arch was created by artist Owen Morrel and will be installed late summer 2016.

Eventually, the City plans to have dozens of sculptures on display along the trails that stretch from the Arlington Convention Center near Interstate 30 down south to Meadowbrook Park on Abram street.

BUILD A DREAM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

T

he Build A Dream Scholarship Program is for children (four months to 16 years of age) to register for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs.

Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only. Due to limited funding, scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

Dinner series: 6-10 PM Fridays September 23 to October 14 | Stovall Park Lunch series: 11 AM to 2 PM October 21 to November 11 | Levitt Pavilion The food truck craze that continues to sweep the nation has officially hit the Metroplex. Arlington Parks and Recreation Department has created a way for people to get food-truck eats and treats.

“We wanted to do something where people could dine on some great food and enjoy our park offerings with their friends,” Bob Abbott, Rental and Lake Services Manager, said.

“The food trucks will rotate each week, giving customers a wide variety of tasty options.”

The Food Truck Fridays Dinner Series will be held at Stovall Park, 2800 W. Sublett rd. The series runs 5-10 PM September 23 and 30 and October 7 and 14. The lunch series will be at Levitt Pavilion, 100 W. Abram St. The series runs 11 AM to 2 PM October 21 and 28 and November 4 and 11.

PICKLEBALL

Pickleball is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, and for experienced players, it is a quick, fast-paced, competitive game.

NRPA GOLD MEDAL FINALIST The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association, recently announced Arlington Parks and Recreation as a finalist for the 2016 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. Applications are separated into seven classes, with five classes based on population, one class for armed forces recreation and one class for state park systems awarded on odd numbered years.

Arlington Parks and Recreation is a finalist in the Class II category (population 150,001 – 400,000). The department was also named a finalist for the prestigious honor in 2014.

Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials. Arlington Parks and Recreation joins three other finalists in their class that will compete for grand honors this year.

This year’s finalists will compete for Grand Plaque Award honors this summer, and the six Grand Plaque recipients will be announced live during the NRPA General Session at the 2016 NRPA Annual Conference in St. Louis, MO, Oct 5-8, 2016.

COMMUNICATION & MEDIA EXCELLENCE AWARD Through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google AdWords and responsive website design, the Arlington Parks and Recreation marketing team has elevated program/event awareness, built brand loyalty, increased out social media following and driven revenue to the department.

Arlington has also built a network of local bloggers to increase awareness of department programs and events through its exchange for reviewing/sharing the experience with their followers.

Over the last year alone, the marketing team built two responsive-designed websites for internal events, and has partnered with three local print publications in a monthly “Tips from the Pros” section, which highlights the department staff while offering valuable advice on topics ranging from lawn care, water conservation, golf and tennis instruction, and more.

Arlington has recently unveiled its #PeopleofParks campaign, featuring weekly portraits, videos, or stories from citizens about what makes their parks and recreation facilities special.

ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION HONORS ARLINGTON Arlington is a 17-time honoree of the Tree City USA award by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.

Arlington achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

ARLINGTON DESIGNATED A “PLAYFUL CITY USA” Once again, Arlington proves it really knows how to play. For the ninth straight year, national non-profit KaBOOM! has designated Arlington as one of its Playful City USA communities for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children and its outstanding dedication to play.

EUNICE activity center

Less than two miles from AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Entertainment District, the Eunice Activity Center is a resource to the surrounding community. Eunice was renovated in 2001, adding an additional 3,400 square feet of meeting and gathering space. The center is opens 8:30 AM Monday through Thursday and 11 AM on Fridays.

Eunice has a full slate of recurring activities are throughout the week, including exercise classes, arts and crafts and informational sessions. The 2,400 square foot multi-purpose Main Hall seats 185 with tables, and slightly less with a dance floor. It is ideal for weddings, family reunions and other private events.

The windows of the room provide ambient lighting during daytime hours.

The Main Hall can be divided in three sections. Single Sections of the Hall may be rented during operating hours.

For non-operating hours, at least two sections must be rented. The full-service kitchen is equipped with cooking devices

YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUE INFORMATION • Youth Leagues include a six or eight-game season, league jersey (cap with baseball program), individual participant awards and sports officials.

• Teams will have a volunteer coach. If interested in coaching, indicate this during the online registration process or call us at 817-459-5463.

• Teams are formed by special request such as coaches or other participants.

• Once a team is full, any other special requests will be placed on other teams in the league.

• Practices will be determined by the volunteer coach/parents.

• All youth sports leagues are Coed.

ADULT SPORTS LEAGUES BASKETBALL

Play adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues run during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center Sunday afternoons.

INLINE HOCKEY

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL

Play coed, adult kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons.

The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center and Randol Mill Park Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights.

SOFTBALL

Harold Patterson Sports Center • ASA League Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall. Games are played at Harold Patterson in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road.

Randol Mill Park • USSSA Leagues Eight-game leagues run in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Games are played at Randol Mill Park in north Arlington off I-30 and Randol Mill Road.

VOLLEYBALL

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and coed leagues on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Leagues run during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. Active teen league plays Thursday nights.

BUBBLE SOCCER

Adult Bubble Soccer offers coed leagues on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Elzie Odom Athletic Center during fall and winter. This game league emphasis socializing, recreation and fun.

FRIDAY 10’S PLAY NIGHTS

Arlington Tennis Center’s Friday 10’S Play Nights are designed to allow Juniors ages 9 to 10 to enjoy an evening of tennis games and competition with children their own age.

Play will take place on ATC’s specially marked 10 and Under courts, with specific 10 and Under equipment and balls.

Two rental options:

-Players with paddles and balls pay a regular court fee of $3.50 per person, for the standard 1.5 hours.

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park.

Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club.

The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

hester Ditto Golf Course is scheduled to close in October 2016 for a complete course renovation and new clubhouse build. Construction is estimated to take one year, with the course re-opening in October of 2017.

Highlights of the renovation include a thrilling new layout with multiple tee boxes for all ages and ability levels, improved greens surfaces with Champion Dwarf Bermudagrass, expanded practice facility, new clubhouse with private events, banquet seating and a expansive covered patio overlooking the golf course.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITH! The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy swim lessons on weekends and weeknights.

Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of nine weeks.

Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks.

Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages.

This class will focus on helping your child establish independence in the water while beginning to build a basic foundation for swimming skills. The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes and to improve skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly. eterans Park is home to Arlington’s own 18-hole disc golf course.

Veterans Park’s Disc Golf course opened in 1990 and was 1 of 4 in the metroplex at the time. There are more courses in the area now, but Veteran’s remains one of the toughest courses to play.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest throws.

It has the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. It is designed to be enjoyed by all ages, and makes for a great family activity.

“Veteran’s Disc Golf course has been a very important part of my life since it opened in 1990,” Mickey Scott, President of Arlington Disc Golf Association said. “Disc golf is a booming sport and continues to grow with many opportunities for people to get involved.”

The natural elements of the park provide a beautiful backdrop as well as challenges. Veterans’ course is nestled and woven between beautiful trees and includes rugged holes on rolling hills.

With a wide variety of environment and topography changes, every time you play, is a new adventure.

City’s Second public Dog Park D

og owners will soon have a new public park in the American Dream City where their furry friends can socialize, celebrate and play.

On June 28, the Arlington City Council approved a construction contract of up to $722,000 with Encino Landscape, Inc. to build the future Rush Creek Dog Park on West Pioneer Parkway. The seven-acre park, which will feature water fountains, dog wash stations, shaded seating areas and four fenced-in areas for off-leash play, is expected to open in Spring 2017, Parks and Recreation Department officials said. It will be located near the Rush Creek Linear Park between Park Springs Boulevard and Green Oaks Boulevard.

“It gives the residents in the west and north part of the city a closer dog park alternative and encourage owners to get out and exercise as well,” Eric Seebock, Parks Project Manager and Landscape Architect, said.

When complete, the Rush Creek Dog Park in West Arlington would be the City’s second public dog park. The Tails ‘N Trails dog park, which is located at 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd. behind the Arlington Animal Services Center, has been open since 2007. The southeast Arlington park’s usage by dog owners from across the city has been consistently high, Parks and Recreation Director Lemuel Randolph said.

“People’s affinity for dogs is pretty strong. So many folks treat their dogs as family members, so that connection really brings about an environment where dog owners are looking for opportunities not only for their dogs to socialize but also for themselves,” Randolph said. “We’ve seen a lot of friendships and relationships bloom through the existing dog park and we’ve had a consistent demand for this type of service throughout the city.”

The new park will be different from Tails ‘N Trails in that one of the fenced-in areas will be available for customers to rent for dog birthday parties, weddings, dog training or other canine-centric private events. The rental fees will help offset the costs to operate the park.

“We’re really excited about this amenity, which we are starting to see more of in the parks and recreation industry.

We certainly believe there is a demand for it,” Randolph said.

“We know people pay for party services for dog events. Why not the city? It’s a way for the City to recoup some of the costs for operating the dog park as well.”

Because the new park doesn’t have an established tree canopy, shade structures will be installed to provide visitors some relief from the heat.

The project will also include designated areas for large and small dogs, security lighting and a parking lot with at least 60 spaces.

Construction is expected to begin late summer and take about 150 days to complete. The Parks and Recreation Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park, which aligns with the Arlington City Council’s priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods, next spring.

Arlington voters approved $500,000 for the Rush Creek Dog Park project in the 2014 bond election. The rest of the construction funding will come from park user fees collected by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Though funding hasn’t yet been identified, Arlington hopes eventually to open a third public dog park in north Arlington, Randolph said.

Lake Arlington is a municipally owned multi-purpose reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply, and for recreational purposes. The reservoir is located on Village Creek in Tarrant County at the western edge of Arlington.

The City of Arlington, recognizing the need for additional water supply, began construction of the lake in 1956 and completed the project March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 2,250 surface acres and has a watershed of 143 square miles. The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

Lake Arlington has various facilities for your enjoyment. There are two parks located along Lake Arlington’s eastern shore, Richard Simpson Park (6300 W. Arkansas Ln.) to the north and Bowman Springs Park (7003 Poly Webb Rd.) to the south.

Looking for the perfect place to have your next gathering? Then check out all the facilities that Arlington Parks and Recreation has to offer! We rent recreation centers, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, senior centers, park pavilions, tennis courts, swimming pools, banquet rooms, golf courses, softball fields, a skating arena, rock climbing wall, lake room and many other facilities.

PAVILION RENTALS

There are 25 pavilion sites conveniently located throughout Arlington. Park pavilions are offered in a variety of sizes and can accommodate both small and large groups. Pavilions can be rented for a half day or full day and are available to rent seven days a week. Most pavilion sites include a grill, picnic tables and electricity. BOB DUNCAN CENTER

Bob Duncan Center is a 10,000 square-foot facility designed to accommodate needs of small and large events such as weddings, business meetings and more. The facility includes a main hall with stage, three spacious meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard with patio and a fully equipped kitchen. Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility.

LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS

The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for wedding receptions, reunions, parties, meetings and more.

The climate controlled room comfortably holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen.

The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays. Full day or half day rentals are available on weekdays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and comfortably holds approximately 70-80 people. The room is supplied with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Reservations can be made by calling 817-459-5473.

VENTANA GRILLE

Ventana Grille is located at Tierra Verde Golf Club and offers incredible food in a scene worth savoring. Both inside and outside seating options are available and menus can be customized to fit party needs. For more information call 817548-5047 or visit ventanagrille.com.

Need a great location for your big family get-together? Is your team ready to take on the world, or at least anyone in the Metroplex? Tired of listening to tall tales from co-workers about their weekend games? Rent a Softball Field Complex for a Gathering, Tournament or Corporate event! RECREATION CENTERS

We have six recreation centers located throughout Arlington that can be reserved for your party needs. Entire centers can be rented and individual rooms are offered as well. All centers feature a kitchen with food prep area and an ice machine.
