Take a moment and think about the first spring day after a long winter. The sun is shining, warming your body. You can hear the birds singing in the trees. You notice that you’re not the only one taking advantage of this beautiful day. There are suddenly people all around you taking advantage of being outside after the cold has kept them indoors for far too long. The bright sky and warm air seems to lift our spirits. We feel better, even more relaxed. That first day of spring feeling perhaps has no rival. But why exactly do we get such a “natural high” from this connection with nature after a long hiatus? And is there a way to extend this short-term feeling so that it becomes a long-term attitude?

Getting Your “Outdoorphins” Endorphins are chemicals that are typically released in the body after exercise and produce a feeling of well-being. “Outdoorphins” is a term that people having started using to define why they feel so good from being active outside. Scientists have their own term to help explain why connecting with nature feels good. It’s called biophilia, which is the innate affinity humans have for other living things. Like most other processes that happen inside our bodies, biophilia’s roots can be found in our ancient ancestors, human beings that had to hunt and gather in order to survive.

“Greenness, water, and plants relax us, possibly because they signal access to food and shelter,” said Seattle-based environmental psychologist Judith Heerwagen, PhD.

Arlington has more than 50 miles of hike and bike trails. If you’re a mountain bike enthusiast, there are more than 10 miles of cross country trails that, according to the Dallas Off-Road Bicycling Association (DORBA), are “some of the best around.”

The benefits of connecting with nature in today’s world are plentiful. Numerous studies have shown that just by spending time in natural surroundings, people report having reduced stress, anger and depression. Spending time in nature also helps improve mood while lowering blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and stress hormone levels.

A report published by the USDA Forest Service in 2010 even stated that, “forest visits may also strengthen our immune system by increasing the activity and number of natural killer cells that destroy cancer cells.” Still other studies have shown that fragrances found in various plants and flowers have the ability to reduce stress when inhaled by changing gene activity and blood chemistry.

Spending time in nature helps improve mood while lowering blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and stress hormone levels.

For the Children Perhaps no other group can benefit more from making a connection with nature than children.

Author Richard Louv, who wrote the bestsellers Last Child in the Woods and The Nature Principle, coined the term “nature-deficit disorder” to describe the loss of connection children increasingly feel with the natural world. He argues that nature-deficit disorder affects, “health, spiritual wellbeing, and many other areas, including [people’s] ability to feel ultimately alive.”

Tierra Verde Golf Club was the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Not just for golfers, the course offers a full-service restaurant with scenic views and nature tours throughout the year.

This disorder is due to the lack of open space, increasingly busy schedules, an emphasis on team sports over individualized play and exploration, and competition from electronic media. The cure?

“We need to figure out ways to increase nature time even as technology increases,” said Louv. “It has to be a conscious decision.”

EXERCISING HIS CREATIVITY

Recently hired Arlington Parks & Recreation fitness instructor Kurt Reichenstein uses his passion for art to get others to unplug and connect.

Ever bought the “longest lasting battery” only to find out that it did not last as long as you thought it would? How about the latest and greatest exercise machine, and a month after you purchased it, your laundry is hung and neatly folded all over it? Have you ever felt totally plugged into and attached to a treadmill?

Kurt Reichenstein, one of the newest APRD fitness instructors, doesn’t believe in becoming fit by being attached to equipment. He believes you should unplug from the machines and connect to your own power to become physically fit. Kurt has joined the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and will be teaching a new class called From Couch to 5K. He believes that every person has within them the power to fill their own battery, and eventually accomplish the goal of finishing a 5K race.

“It doesn’t matter your age or your size.

It doesn’t matter if you have never run a race. The goal is to finish and I can give you the skills to accomplish that goal.

My greatest passion is training people to finish”, says Kurt.

Kurt will teach each class participant all the basics of starting and finishing a 5K including how to fill out the application, where to pin on the race number, what to wear, how to warm up and even a special way to tie your shoes. He will help each student set their distance goals in a manner that will build their confidence and bring out each person’s competitive spirit. Kurt believes, “the most important thing is the person who is encouraging you. If it is not fun, no one is going to do it! I won’t ask anyone in the class to do anything I wouldn’t do. And, I only want to do things that are fun.”

Encouraging individuals to make fitness a part of their lives is very important to Kurt. He has been encouraging all age groups for decades. Kurt was an elementary Physical Education Teacher for 33 years and has a Master’s Degree in Recreation and Leisure Sciences. He has taught fitness classes, including within the City of Arlington, on and off for almost 40 years. Kurt has also finished multiple marathons and now officiates at local races.

When he is not running races and teaching other people how to become fit, Kurt spends his time creating whimsical art. He draws his inspiration for each piece from the world around him. “I like to think out of the box. My art is done in my downtime. I guess you could say that it is the time of the day when I unplug from fitness and connect to the world around me. But, it is important that I connect to the world with uplifting art”, Kurt says.

Each of Kurt’s art pieces captures a moment with a whimsical and touching interpretation, usually depicting children and animals with big descriptive eyes and happy faces. Some of his art has been used as thank you cards, greeting and note cards. They range from seasonal pictorials to depictions of current events.

“My art lets me look at the world like a kid would. Too many kids are connected to computers and technology today.

They don’t use their imagination and they don’t play outside. I believe you can teach a kid to become fit by letting them use their imagination, and they don’t even realize they are getting exercise.

Let them become their favorite baseball player and tell them to swing the bat like that player. Pick up a golf club and swing it like Tiger Woods. Don’t sit at a video game and use your thumbs while pretending to be an athlete. Just get outside and do it!”, says Kurt.

Kurt wants to see adults getting outdoors to become fit. “You have got to train your mind, muscles and whole body.

The treadmill does half the work for you.

You have got to put one foot in front of the other. It doesn’t matter if you have to start out walking, add a little jogging and then eventually teaching yourself to run”, Kurt says. He encourages class members to bring a buddy and plans to set a pace for each individual. Every level of walker/ runner is welcome and according to Kurt, every participant will learn the pride of competition. He says, “My favorite thing is when one of my students who started out as a walker eventually wins their age bracket in a race. But you got to get off that couch and get out and do it.”

Sports Camp - Full Day

Full day sports camps offer a variety of sports venues daily such as basketball, baseball, flag football, track, skating, archery, crafts and other activities. Summer Camps - Full Day

Full day camps offer a new theme each week with games, crafts and other fun activities. Campers also may swim at least once a week at a nearby pool. Six field trips are planned. Campers should bring a sack lunch each day. An afternoon snack is provided. CAMP KITSU Camp Kitsu offers a safe and fun outdoor experience for kids! Our focus is on developing outdoor skills and conservation while having the most memorable summer yet!

im Baggett knows Arlington sports. Not only is he the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department (APRD) Adult Sports Manager, but he’s been playing sports in Arlington since the 1950s.

“The City of Arlington got into sports well over 75 years ago.

It began with a baseball program that played its games at Meadowbrook Park before Randol Mill was developed. Two youth baseball fields and two senior baseball fields along with two teenage baseball and two fast pitch fields were built in the midfifties. As fast pitch participation began to wane and slow pitch softball began to overtake the numbers, the two teenage fields became the first slow pitch complex in Arlington in latter 1960s early 1970s.”

But while city sports offerings may have started with baseball and softball, today the city has leagues in sports across the spectrum. “The City of Arlington also provides both youth and adult basketball, youth soccer, adult (men’s, women’s and coed) and youth (co-ed) volleyball, adult inline hockey, adult and youth kickball (co-ed for both), adult men’s flag football, youth cheerleading, and youth T-ball coach pitch and kid pitch baseball (co-ed),” said Baggett.

With that many offerings in its lineup, many organizations, such as local churches and businesses, look to the Arlington leagues to get a little exercise and also maintain some fun rivalries.

“For years we have offered a Monday night men’s church league.

First Baptist Church and Fielder Road Baptist Church have been a part of the program since the beginning and theirs was an early rivalry. Business rivalries have come and gone over the years, restaurants versus restaurants, General Motors teams versus Bell Helicopter teams, etc.”

We have a team that has been with us for over 20 years who started as seniors in high school playing with their dads.

During the week of Halloween they dress up in character to play the game, from Forest Gump to Babe Ruth, to a sniper in the outfield decked out in full camo to super heroes. They all enjoy playing,” said Baggett.

ADULT SPORTS LEAGUES BASKETBALL

The City of Arlington offers adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington or at Meadowbrook Park Center in central Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

FLAG FOOTBALL

The City of Arlington’s Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues are offered during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center in south Arlington on Sunday afternoons.

INLINE HOCKEY

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow the rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL

The City of Arlington offers Coed Adult Kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter sessions. The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center and Randol Mill Park on Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights.

SOFTBALL

Harold Patterson Sports Center • ASA League Located in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road. Leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer and fall each year. Leagues consist of eight games per season.

Randol Mill Park • USSSA Leagues Located in north Arlington off I-30 and Randol Mill Road. Leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer and fall each year. Leagues consist of eight games per season.

VOLLEYBALL

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are offered on Monday and Friday, and Coed leagues on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. Leagues are offered during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. A Coed Rookie league is held on Tuesday nights.

Located less than two miles from AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Entertainment District, the Eunice Activity Center was renovated in 2001, adding an additional 3,400 square feet of meeting and gathering space.

The center is open weekdays, beginning at 8:30 AM on Mon-Thur and 11:00 AM on Fri. The Eunice Activity Center is located just down the road from Meadowbrook Park, Arlington’s first city park. Consisting of 52 acres, the park opened in 1924 and features picnic grounds, the nine-hole Meadowbrook Park Golf Course, horseshoe pits, a Monarch butterfly waystation, basketball courts and much more.

Rooms at the Eunice Activity Center may be rented seven days a week during business hours when no center activities are scheduled, and after business hours.

The facility includes a 3,000 square foot ballroom, a variety of multi-purpose meeting rooms and a full service kitchen with stove,

FITNESS PLUS PROGRAM Eunice Activity Center is also a participating facility in the Fitness Plus program. Fitness Plus is a dynamic program that enables a member to participate in as many fitness programs as they desire for an all-inclusive set fee of $30 per month. The fee includes the weight room. Two Arlington Parks and Recreation regulars are loving married life after a Naturally Fun romance that was sparked at Senior Center New York.

onnie and Don Adams said they hope everyone will find the kind of love they have.

The couple met four years ago at the Arlington Senior Recreation Center on New York Avenue. They saw each other at events and often played games at the same table, Don Adams said.

He asked Bonnie Adams to the Ennis Bluebonnet Festival on April 17, 2010, where they had their first date.

“I think he was pretty confident I would say yes,” Bonnie said.

Pam Mitchell, an administrative aid at the center, said she discovered they were dating during an outing to the State Fair.

In November, they honeymooned on a cruise to the Caribbean. Now they enjoy a relaxed life, Don said, and spend their time watching old movies, reading poetry, listening to music and going to

Arlington Tennis Center junior tennis camps are designed for all levels of players aged 5-6 and 7-8, 9-10 and 11-17. Our 10 & Under camps (ages 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10) use ‘right sized’ courts, nets and racquets for younger players. (Note: Age 5-6 meets for one hour only, MondayThursday.) Level I-III camps (ages 11-17) introduce the fundamentals of tennis in a fun and games format for complete beginners, with teaching focus and goals adjusted as players progress through Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Competitive Junior Training camps are designed for advanced, high school and qualified players.

Level I-III classes for juniors aged 11-17 are designed to introduce, refine and build on the fundamentals of tennis in a fun and games format. Students are divided into age and ability levels. Receive $5 off a beginner prestrung tennis racquet with your first class registration!

ATC SPECIALTY SUMMER CAMP

Arlington Tennis Center is offering two specialty summer tennis camps. ATC works closely with Arlington ISD high school coaches so that both camps are geared toward best preparing players of all levels for the upcoming fall season.

The Junior High camp is for players who are entering junior high (or middle) school, and who plan to participate in the on-campus tennis programs and teams. The High School preparation camp is designed for players who are entering high school, and who plan to compete on a varsity or junior varsity team.

Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park.

Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club.

The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player.

The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.

HOOKED ON GOLF! Our Hooked on Golf Junior Academy is the perfect place for juniors of all skill levels to improve their game. This fun and exciting program features four structured levels, where students can advance from one level to the next by learning the many life skills inherent in golf and performing all of the golf skills required to advance.

Classes are taught at both Tierra Verde Golf Club and Chester Ditto Golf Course.

Each level consists of four weeks of instruction. We also feature a Junior League, where young golfers who have participated in Level 3 and up can compete against other program members.

Camps are designed to get students “Hooked on Golf” in a fun and exciting environment. Students will learn the very basics in pitching, putting, chipping and full swing, while having a great time, and meeting new friends. The final day of the camp will feature a skills competition with prizes awarded.

Each camp runs for four days, 90 minutes each day, and costs $79 per week. Campers will be divided into two age groups (ages 6-11 or 12-17).

Arlington Golf’s Level 2 program is designed for anyone who has either completed the beginner level and has trouble breaking 100 or has taken golf lessons in the past and wishes to become more consistent.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITH! The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy swim lessons on weekends and weeknights.

Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of nine weeks.

Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks.

Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages.

LEVEL ASSESSMENT The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.

We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below.

Level 3 - STROKE DEVELOPMENT

The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke and to coordinate the front crawl.

They are introduced to the scissors kick and the dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

Water Safety Instructor

Learning Objectives: Recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers and active and passive drowning victims; recognize aquatic emergencies and act promptly and appropriately; perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; recognize and care for possible spinal cord injuries; learn to provide first aid and CPR. Attendance at all classes is required! Times are subject to change.

Prerequisites: 25 yards Frontcrawl, Backcrawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke, 15 yards Butterfly, 1 minute tread and backfloat. All strokes must be performed at Level 4 skill level. Must be at least 16 years of age and must attend all classes!

Class times are subject to change.

Candidates successfully completing the class will be certified in Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Through classroom learning and hands on experience, the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course prepares you to teach people of all ages to swim and to be safe in, on and around water.

RUSH CREEK MITIGATION The City of Arlington unveiled plans in 2011 to acquire weather-damaged homes near the Rush Creek area, and transform the lots into public park land.

Chronic flooding from Hurricane Hermine in 2010 presented an opportunity for the City of Arlington to purchase affected homes and condominiums. These properties would be demolished to expand park acreage at Clarence Foster Park, Kelly Park, and Rush Creek Linear Park.

“The Rush Creek Mitigation project will benefit Clarence Foster Park neighbors in several ways,” said Parks Project Manager Kurt Beilharz. “The Park will be getting a completely new playground with shade structures and a new drinking fountain. The old exercise equipment that was in the park will be replaced as well.

PARK IMPROVEMENTS:

• Removal of sections of Creekside Drive and Valleycrest Drive • Re-grading and clean-up of the lots that were former home-sites • Renovations and replacement in some areas of existing water and sanitary sewer lines • Replacement of the existing asphalt hike and bike trail in Clarence Foster Park with a new 8’ wide concrete hike & bike trail • Full replacement of the old, existing playground in Clarence Foster Park

“The old asphalt hike and bike trail will be replaced with a new 8’ wide, lighted, looped concrete trail that will connect to the existing trails in Kelley Park and Rush Creek Linear Parks. A new lighted parking lot with an electronically controlled gate will also be installed on the south side of the park.”

• New exercise equipment installed at 4 locations along the new trail (8 individual pieces in total)

The “Rush Creek Flood Mitigation Project” contract was bid out on September 24, 2013. The $2,000,000 project called for more than 20 acres of former residential land to be repurposed into park property.

The mission of Keep Arlington Beautiful, a silver star affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the Arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. Get involved by volunteering, attending local green classes, becoming a member and liking us on Facebook. In 2012, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Arlington Beautiful logged 51 volunteer events performed by over 3,900 volunteers. This resulted in an astounding 46,000 volunteer hours worked and was double the total of volunteer hours accumulated in 2011.

A Saturday morning series of special story time programs will teach colors, simple machines, insects, sounds, five senses, water science and habitats. How it works: Pick up a reading log at the library. Complete 5 hours of reading, turn in the log and receive prizes, a T-shirt, book, certificate, swim pass and a Rangers ticket! Support Phase II Exhibit Renovations

In Summer of 2013, Phase I of River Legacy Living Science Center’s exhibit hall renovations were completed. Phase I renovations included larger, more natural habitats for our native animals. In Phase II, we plan to complement the existing animal habitats by creating interactive exhibits and spaces that depict The Water, The Riverbank, and The Forest areas along the Trinity River. These new hands-on experiences aligned with our environmental education curricula and new museum-quality interactive education displays will allow River Legacy Foundation to better connect tomorrow’s stewards with the natural world. After-School Clubs & Home School Classes

It’s every child’s nature to explore. In After-School Clubs and Home School Classes, students have the unique experience of exploring the plants, animals and habitats of a riparian forest in the middle of the Metroplex.

• Home School Science Classes for ages 5 to 11 meet once a month from 2 to 4 PM from Sept-April.

Acorns Gift Shop located inside River Legacy Living Science Center is an authorized retailer of Wee Forest Folk, fanciful mouse miniatures.

These adorable collectibles have been handcrafted by the Petersen family since 1972. Acorns also offers an array of nature-themed toys, gifts, jewelry, birding items, puppets and more. All proceeds from the store benefit the Science Center’s environmental education programs. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday.

The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents more than 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and home-grown Texas country to hot Indie artists. Lake Arlington is a municipally owned multi-purpose reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply, and for recreational purposes. The reservoir is located on Village Creek in Tarrant County at the western edge of Arlington. The City of Arlington, recognizing the need for additional water supply, began construction of the lake in 1956 and completed the project March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 2,250 surface acres and has a watershed of 143 square miles. The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

Lake Arlington has various facilities for your enjoyment. There are two parks located along Lake Arlington’s eastern shore, Richard Simpson Park (6300 W. Arkansas Ln.) to the north and Bowman Springs Park (7003 Poly Webb Rd.) to the south. Special attractions at these parks include boat launches, picnic areas, BBQ grills and restrooms. Pavilions are available for rent at both parks. Richard Simpson Park also has the Lake Arlington Activity Room, which can be reserved for private functions. A recreation permit is required to place, operate or keep any boat or other craft on Lake Arlington, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, barges, personal watercraft and sailboards. Lake Fees Daily - $5; Annual - $30; Senior (60+) Annual - $15 Paddling the Lake Enjoy paddling along the shores of beautiful Lake Arlington or the Trinity River to enjoy a taste of nature in the middle of this urban center. Put-in and take-out areas are marked by signs. Launches are allowed only from designated areas at Richard Simpson Park, Bowman Springs Park and Eugene McCray Park. A recreation permit is required for the paddling trail, which can be obtained in the Lake Office at Richard Simpson Park.

CAMP KITSU Join us for our outdoor adventure camp along the bank of Lake Arlington! We will focus on conservation education and the development of outdoor skills. Canoeing, fishing, archery, forts, nature crafts, guest speakers, field trips, swimming, and more!

Fishing pole & life vest required.

FISHING Fish varieties at Lake Arlington include Black Bass, Sand Bass, Hybrid Stripers, Catfish and Crappie. The state laws of Texas govern the taking of fish from Lake Arlington.

Bob Duncan Center (BDC) is a 10,000 square foot facility designed to accommodate needs of small and large events such as weddings, receptions, trade shows, business meetings, reunions, parties, music recitals and more. The facility includes a main hall with stage, three spacious meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard / patio and a fully equipped kitchen. Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility. LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS

Planning an event? The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for many events such as wedding receptions, reunions, parties, meetings and more! The climate controlled room comfortably holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen.

The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays.

Full day or half day rentals are available on weekdays. During the summer, the room is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and comfortably holds approximately 7080 people. For your convenience, we supply the room with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Reservations can be made by calling 817-459-5473.

Ventana Grille is located at Tierra Verde Golf Club and offers incredible food in a scene worth savoring. The casual dining atmosphere is complimented by sweeping views of our award winning golf course. Both inside and outside seating options are available and menus can be customized to fit your party needs. We have six recreation centers located throughout Arlington that can be reserved for your party needs. Entire centers can be rented and individual rooms are offered as well. SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP EVENT

MAY 8, 2014 • 8 AM-5 PM Parks and Recreation Administrative Office 717 W. Main St. The first 160 applicants will receive a scholarship award of $75 for one child or $150 for two or more during this special one-time Summer Dream Scholarship event. Qualification for the scholarship is based upon the same federal income criteria as the Build a Dream Scholarship below and is available to Arlington residents only. Residents can apply for this scholarship in addition to the regular Build a Dream scholarship.

Build A Dream Scholarship Program The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Build A Dream Scholarship Program offers scholarships that can be used to register a child (four months to 16 years of age) for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs.

Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only.

Applications are made at the Parks and Recreation administrative office. Income verification, registration for classes and a $5 fee per family will be required at the time of application. Applicants may only apply for one scholarship per application year. Scholarship award is $75 for one child and $150 for two or more.

BUILD A DREAM SIGN-UP Application date is Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM at the Arlington Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices, located at 717 W. Main.

Please complete the entire application and manual registration form with your class selections prior to submission. Incomplete submissions cannot be processed.

ABRAM ST. “Food Truck Fridays” started March 21 and continues through Friday, April 18, 2014 at Founders Plaza, located at 100 West Abram St., in downtown Arlington. Enjoy the beautiful weather and great food from some of the top food trucks in DFW.

“We wanted to do something where people could enjoy good food at the Founders Plaza park lawn with their friends,” said Rental and Lake Services Manager Michael Debrecht. “Different food trucks each week will be there to sell their wares.”

The food truck craze that continues to sweep across the nation has officially hit the DFW Metroplex and your Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. The APRD has created a way for residents and really anyone who is hankering for some awesome food truck eats and treats to get your fill.

Based on great turnouts during the first few weeks of the five-week pilot program, the Arlington Parks and Recreation department is looking to extend the days and hours the trucks are available, as well as increase the number of locations they serve.
