Build A Dream Scholarship Program The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Build A Dream Scholarship Program offers scholarships that can be used to register a child (four months to 16 years of age) for many Arlington Parks and Recreation Department youth programs.

Qualification for the scholarship is based upon federal income guidelines and is available to Arlington residents only.

Applications are made at the Parks and Recreation administrative office. Income verification, registration for classes and a $5 fee per family will be required at the time of application. Applicants may only apply for one scholarship per application year. Scholarship award is $75 for one child and $150 for two or more.

BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER

In addition to noodling around with science projects every once in a while, Albert Einstein once said these words about being a part of a community: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” While technological advances have allowed us to connect in ways previous generations had never dreamed of, these connections are more often detached.

Our busy schedules and the frequency at which we change jobs and homes make it hard to feel a sense of community these days. Left unchecked, this sense of isolation can beget loneliness and depression, which can spiral into increased violence, substance abuse and even mental illness. Making a connection within our communities by building relationships with our neighbors and serving in civic and/or religious groups are examples of those deeper, more meaningful relationships that can lead to improved health on an individual level and improved wellness of the community as a whole.

But what is the definition of a community? Is it a geographic space within which we reside? Is it based upon our race, color or creed? Or is it based upon some other definition? For most people, community is a sense of cohesiveness among a group of people that share a vested interest. These interests include the well-being of your neighborhood, maintaining healthy and vibrant schools, supporting local sports teams, and being active in a local church or civic group. In addition to making the community stronger, supporting these types of interests has numerous benefits for the individual as well.

What are the benefits of community involvement?

Consider these benefits listed on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) website Healthychildren.org: • Participating in community activities gives you more opportunities to become an independent and successful [person].

• It provides you with a group of friends who can help you learn more about yourself and your talents and help you make better decisions.

• By connecting with your community, you are never alone. You have a place to go and people to talk with when you need it.

• The more you help others, the better you feel and the more likely that someone will be there for you.

Making the connection to your community doesn’t necessarily mean you need to join your local chamber of commerce or run for school board president. It can be as simple as meeting your neighbors or buying from a local merchant, or even visiting your local “third place.” What is a third place, you ask? Third places have been defined as those locations in our communities where people gather to visit, share news and just be among other people. These places include coffee shops, libraries, and parks and recreation facilities and often feel like a home away from home.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES APRD a finalist for national honor

A

rlington Parks and Recreation has been selected as a finalist for the 2014 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management program. The award is handed out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

The Gold Medal Award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and agency recognition. Each agency is judged on its ability to address the needs of those it serves through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials.

Other three national finalists in the Class II division (populations of 150,000-400,000) are Bakersfield (CA) Recreation and Parks, Henderson (NV) Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Plano (TX) Parks and Recreation.

The Gold Medal Grand Plaque will be presented at the opening session of the 2014 NRPA Congress in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, October 14.

APRD Marketing team wins website awards

Arlington Parks and Recreation’s new website NaturallyFun.org earned the Texas Recreation & Park Society (TRAPS) 2014 Website Excellence award and also received national honors for Best Website Design by LERN. The new website includes social media integration, a park amenity finder and maps, an interactive blog, digital calendar of events, and a responsive design that re-formats to iPhone, Android, and tablet layouts. The site was built using a content management system that allows staff to easily add content to the website without web design skills.

Arbor Day Foundation honors Arlington

Arlington was named a 2013 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care. Arlington achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Once again, Arlington proves it really knows how to play. For the seventh straight year, national non-profit KaBOOM! has designated Arlington as one of its Playful City USA communities for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children and its outstanding dedication to play. The KaBOOM! Playful City USA program, sponsored by the Humana Foundation, honors cities, towns and communities across America that are taking bold steps to ensure that all children, especially the 16 million American kids living in poverty, have easy access to balanced and active play in their communities. Arlington is one of just two cities in Texas to have earned seven distinctions.

Meadowbrook Park earns recognition

Arlington’s Meadowbrook Park was recently selected as a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) in a ceremony at the association’s annual institute in Corpus Christi on February 19, 2014. To qualify for consideration, the park must have endured the test of time and become iconic to those who have visited, played and rested on its grounds.

Built in the center of Arlington in 1928, Meadowbrook Park seems to hold a special place in people’s hearts. Whether it is memories of the 9-hole golf course that sits on the south side of the building or simply reminiscing about the neighborhood and programs they participated in in as a child at the center, many citizens express fond memories of this particular recreation center from their youth.

Lone Star Legacy Parks must be a minimum of 50 years old. A Lone Star Legacy Park holds special prominence in the local community and the state of Texas. A designation as a Lone Star Legacy is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a park.

Arlington wins Keep Texas Beautiful award The City of Arlington and the APRD Forestry and Beautification division earned first place in Keep Texas Beautiful’s Government Award (Texas cities with population of 50,000+). The award is given to municipalities that make outstanding contributions to the Texas environment.

The City of Arlington’s Forestry and Beautification (FAB) Division works with Keep Arlington Beautiful (KAB) to achieve KAB’s mission of environmental conservation and education. Among the many contributions, in an effort to promote water conservation at City facilities and parks, the FAB Division installed native landscaping at the Parks and Recreation main office in the spring of 2013. This project included a 10,000 gallon water harvesting cistern that is estimated to collect up to 172,000 gallons of water annually. FAB has also created an educational component for schools, events, and forestry camps to discuss conservation of trees, water, prairies and wildlife.

By coordinating tree planting events, FAB is currently working toward their goal to raise Arlington’s Urban Forest canopy by planting over 30,000 trees in 10 years. The initiative is part of the Tree North Texas program, the largest tree planting initiative in the nation, with a plan to plant over 3 million trees in North Texas during the next decade. Through cleanup events, FAB engages community volunteers in the removal of thousands of trash bags of waste from creeks, streams and waterways. To assist in many of these events, FAB staff also coordinates the funding for Keep Arlington Beautiful’s Mobile Litter Unit. The unit is stocked full with litter pickup tools, and is made available free of charge to Arlington residents and businesses for beautification and litter pickup.

The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department received four awards from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society at the 2013 state conference in Lubbock, Texas.

Foundation. A city-wide facility at Vandergriff Park, as well as several small skate-lets located in linear parks, are scheduled to open in 2014.

Sue Phillips, a long-time resident of east Arlington, received the “Outstanding Service Award”. The award is given to an individual that has contributed extensive volunteer time toward providing leisure service programs, facilities, actively supported bond proposals through the local community.

Phillips is a member of the Arlington Parks Board and the founder of east Arlington renewal.

The ReLEAF program earned the APRD the “Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award” in recognition for innovative and effective recreation programming during the Arlington Tornado ReLEAF tree planting event. During the one-day event last November, the city planted 1,000 trees to replace ones that were lost during the tornadoes that ravaged southwest and west Arlington in April of 2012. Over 500 volunteers came together to assist the APRD with the effort.

The APRD received the “Planning for Excellence” award for the city-wide skate park master plan. On March 12, 2013, the APRD hosted the grand opening of the Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skatepark, located at Randol Mill Park. Arlington’s first skate park was built with funding from Cody Rocamontes Inc., a Tony Hawk Foundation grant awarded to CRI and a grant from the Arlington Tomorrow

The department also took home the “Park Design Exellence” award for its design of the River Legacy Parks nature playground (pictured below).

The food truck craze that continues to sweep across the nation has officially hit the DFW Metroplex and your Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. The APRD has created a way for residents and really anyone who is hankering for some awesome food truck eats and treats to get your fill.

“We wanted to do something where people could dine on some great food and enjoy our park offerings with their friends,” said Rental and Lake Services Manager Michael Debrecht. “The food trucks will rotate each week, giving customers a wide variety of tasty options.”

“Food Truck Tuesdays” will start on Sept. 16 and continue through Oct. 21 at Founders Plaza, located at 100 West Abram Street.

It will revolve around lunchtime, with trucks being there from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm.

The “Food Truck Friday Nights” dinner series will be held at Stovall Park this fall. The series runs from Sept. 19-Oct. 24 each Friday, from 5:00-10:00 PM. Q: WHAT DO YOU DO AT CAMP HUGH? I work as the Assistant Director and I oversee all the groups of kids: big, small and the counselors. I make sure they get everywhere on time and everyone has what they need. When its lunchtime, I make sure kids get their lunch out, and clean up afterwards. Essentially, I make sure everything is running smoothly throughout the day.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF SUMMER CAMP? I love seeing the kids come out of their shell in during opening assembly. I am a goofy kind of guy: I like to sing, dance, be loud, and just have fun with the kids. Some kids are shy, quiet and often nervous but whenever you interact with them and act goofy, as goofy as you can be, it kind of pops the bubble for them. It makes them

see that they don’t have to worry about being embarrassed because they look at me, and the other counselors, and see us having fun and being crazy. It gets everyone interacting. It’s just really cool.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING FOR APRD? My favorite part about it is making a difference in kids’ lives. These kids have the world ahead of them and they might not know what they want to do in life, but when they come to camp it’s a place where they can have a sense of belonging. Summer camp is a time where kids can make friends for life, and I love being present for that time of their lives.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A CAMP COUNSELOR? Camps have always been a big part of my life. When I was little, I loved sports so I went to several different sports camps. I also liked to go to a Christian camp called Camp Thurman which had a huge impact on my life. It was an awesome experience growing up and I always thought, “I want to be just like these counselors.” I still remember one of my favorite counselors; his nickname was “Fish”. I’ll never forget him and how much fun he made camp for me and all the other kids.

That’s something that I’ll never forget, and I want to be that kind of influence in the lives of the kids at Camp Hugh.

THE YOUTH SPORTS PYRAMID Why Kids Stop Playing.

A

s sports administrators we are asked daily why kids have stopped playing youth sports. Besides an obvious technology take-over, there are other reasons kids stop playing sports. Youth sports surveys point to three reasons kids stop playing. The biggest reason being: Sports are no longer “fun”.

Fun has been taken out of youth sports. Screaming parents, demanding coaches and the overwhelming need to perform at everyone else’s level, except their own, has pushed thousands of kids off the sports fields and onto the sofa. Kids are benched during games with little to no play if they are less talented than others on a team. Talk about adults fostering feelings of inadequacy in children! It’s sad that at age 10 kids feel washed up from playing sports.

Willie Stargell once said, “It’s supposed to be fun, the man says ‘Play Ball’ not ‘Work Ball’ you know.”

In today’s ultra competitive world some things must remain pure and teach more than just winning. The challenge of the sport is far more the greater victory than the results on the scoreboard.

There are programs which offer greater challenges for children who possess the aptitude, attitude, skills and desire to play at a higher level.

For other programs the emphasis is on providing recreational activities (sports) to others whose measure of success is participating at their level rather than performing at expected levels.

The youth sports pyramid is based on five levels participants go through when playing sports.

INTRODUCTION This level introduces the child to the very basics of team sports. As early as age 3, children can get exposed to athletics. The instincts of a child are to run, kick and throw.

ALTERNATIVE This level is the experimental level. A child might have started in soccer and then go to baseball, football, gymnastics, cheerleading or any other activity.

SKILLS At this level the skills for a specific sport becomes the main emphasis. Kids become overwhelmed and frustrated since many can no longer keep the pace.

SELECTIVE Tryouts, performance and personal experiences determine whether a child continues or drops.

At the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department, our focus has always been on the development of our youth on and off the field. The department’s “Playing is Winning” philosophy was introduced in 2005 with a premise that all participants win by participating in recreational sports.

ELITE Moving on with the select concept in the next level. Most teams take the top 5% of their team and add from other teams to become more elite.

There has always been a separation in performance over the years. The issue has become that the age of the separation has gotten younger and younger. Kids are dropping from sports because the exclusion has started at an earlier age and programs have established themselves as elite.

Many of these programs are not elite and it’s unfortunate that our youth are being pressured at ages 6-7 to perform at a level of 12 year olds.

ELITE

Most teams take the top 5% of their team and add from other teams to become more elite.

SELECTIVE

Tryouts, performance and personal experiences determine whether a child continues or drops.

Our program goal focuses on the child and their involvement instead of the scoreboard. After all, team sports provide much more than a win/loss record.

Sports leagues builds character, teaches teamwork, improves social skills and involves them in physical activities while having fun.

At the end of the season, each participant receives an award not for their W-L record but because of their continued involvement in sports. This seems to be a hot topic right now of whether awards should be given

for certain age groups. For our program, we will continue to hand out the trophies and medals each season. After all, we are a recreational league focusing on the physical fitness and development of our youth.

These awards don’t represent a win against all other teams, it represents the teamwork of a season through the support of your coach, players, team mom and any other person that assisted during the nine week season.

Life will be full of wins and losses, now is the time to build the foundation to help them overcome the hurdles.

ADULT SPORTS LEAGUES BASKETBALL

The City of Arlington offers adult basketball during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. The eight-game leagues are played at Elzie Odom Athletic Center in north Arlington or at Meadowbrook Park Center in central Arlington. League play includes Men’s Competitive and Men’s Recreational divisions.

FLAG FOOTBALL

The City of Arlington’s Men’s Adult Flag Football leagues are offered during the spring, winter and fall seasons. Games are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center in south Arlington on Sunday afternoons.

INLINE HOCKEY

Adult Inline Hockey Leagues for men ages 18 and up. Each season consists of eight games plus playoffs. All teams must provide their own uniforms and game equipment (H.E.C.C. Certified Helmet, Hockey Gloves, Skates and Shin Pads). Leagues will follow the rules and regulations set by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and USA Hockey.

KICKBALL

The City of Arlington offers Coed Adult Kickball during spring, summer, fall, and winter sessions. The six-game leagues are played at Harold Patterson Sports Center and Randol Mill Park on Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights.

SOFTBALL

Harold Patterson Sports Center • ASA League Located in south Arlington off I-20 and Bardin Road. Leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer and fall each year. Leagues consist of eight games per season.

VOLLEYBALL

Adult volleyball offers women’s and coed leagues. Women’s leagues are offered Sunday through Friday, and Coed leagues on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. Leagues are offered during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. A Coed Rookie league is held on Tuesday nights.

Located less than two miles from AT&T Stadium and the Arlington Entertainment District, the Eunice Activity Center was renovated in 2001, adding an additional 3,400 square feet of meeting and gathering space.

The Eunice Activity Center is located just down the road from Meadowbrook Park, Arlington’s first city park. Consisting of 52 acres, the park opened in 1924 and features picnic grounds, the nine-hole Meadowbrook Park Golf Course, horseshoe pits, a Monarch butterfly waystation, basketball courts and much more.

Rooms at the Eunice Activity Center may be rented seven days a week during business hours when no center activities are scheduled, and after business hours.

The facility includes a 3,000 square foot ballroom, a variety of multi-purpose meeting rooms and a full service kitchen with stove,

FITNESS PLUS PROGRAM Eunice Activity Center is also a participating facility in the Fitness Plus program. Fitness Plus is a dynamic program that enables a member to participate in as many fitness programs as they desire for an all-inclusive set fee of $30 per month. The fee includes the weight room. SENIOR CENTERS CRAFT CLUB Long-running social organization supplies knitted teddy bears to children involved in domestic disputes thru partnership with the Arlington Police Department.

T

he Senior Craft Club meets at Eunice Activity Center on Mondays from 9-11:30am and at the Senior Recreation Center New York on Thursdays from 9-11:30 AM. The Club is 35+ plus members strong and always welcoming new members.

The Craft Club is one of the oldest social organizations that meet at the senior centers. Even though the members enjoy the time that they spend creating different craft projects, they are also a benevolent organization. Each year they make a commitment to supply “Bears for The Kids

in Crisis Program” and make knitted teddy bears for the Arlington Police Department program. The teddy bears are given to children involved in domestic disputes that the police department has responded to during the year.

Goretti Baby Room, The Winstar Academy Teen Age Mothers program and they knit baby caps for preemies at various local hospitals. Their longest running program is turning donated yarn into useable items for Mission Arlington.

The senior craft club also supports The Fort Worth Police Department’s “Clothes for Homeless Teenagers”. The clothing and personal items are given to homeless teenagers at Arlington Heights and Eastside High Schools in Fort Worth, Texas, on an as needed basis. Other programs that they support are the Saint

As a result of servicing all of these deserving programs, the craft group is always seeking donations of knitting yarn and other craft related supplies. Cash donations are always welcome. Keep your game sharp during the holidays! Arlington Tennis Center junior tennis camps are designed for all levels of players aged 7-17.

Students currently enrolled in ATC 10&Under classes on T/Th may participate in the Play Nights for half price ($6) with advanced registration.

N.E.Ts (Non Elimination Tournaments) are short, non-elimination mini tournaments, singles and/or doubles, that use modified (shortened) scoring. Registration is limited to 32 players (boys and girls). Players will be matched with opponents of similar skill levels (if known).

Arlington Tennis Center’s Friday 10-S Play Nights are designed to allow Juniors between the ages of 7-10 enjoy an evening of tennis games and competition with children their own age. Lake Arlington Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole facility nestled on 185 acres on the north shore of Lake Arlington. The course was designed with all types of players in mind and with the newly renovated fairways and greens, the course provides a great golfing experience at an exceptional value.

Lake Arlington’s time-honored design blends open and tree-lined fairways, long challenging par 3’s and scenic greens to appeal to every level of player.

A challenge for the professional as well as the beginner, the four sets of tees, ranging from 5,485 yards to 6,637, provides a fair playing field that appeals to every level of proficiency.

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park.

Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

MEADOWBROOK PARK HOME TO SECOND DFW FOOTGOLF COURSE The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department “kicked off” a new program in August at the oldest golf course in Arlington. On August 2nd, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course became the home of the City’s new FootGolf course.

FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf.

Instead of golf clubs and golf balls, the game is played with a soccer ball and a 21-inch diameter cup. The rules mostly correlate with the rules of golf. While FootGolf is played throughout the world, it is estimated their are only 180 courses across the United States. The Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is the second course to open in DFW. The FootGolf layout utilizes the same routing as the golf course, with the FootGolf cups positioned in close proximity to the existing golf greens.

Golf Course Superintendent Brick Scott heard about the idea this spring and introduced it to park officials earlier this summer. “We always want to find new ways to encourage people to get outside and recreate,” said Scott. This is a great way to introduce people to golf and a new activity that the whole family can enjoy.”

The course has submitted paperwork to be certified by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) and the American FootGolf League (AFGL). As a certified course, Meadowbrook Park could host local AFGL leagues, as well as state, regional and national tournaments.

While most FootGolf venues are strictly par-3 courses, Meadowbrook Park has a par of 70, with a mix of shorter and longer holes.

The cost for an 18-hole round of FootGolf is the same as a round of traditional golf. Prices start as low as $9.00 for adults and $7.50 for juniors. The course has rental soccer balls available for $3.00.

HOOKED ON GOLF! Our Hooked on Golf Junior Academy is the perfect place for juniors of all skill levels to improve their game. This fun and exciting program features four structured levels, where students can advance from one level to the next by learning the many life skills inherent in golf and performing all of the golf skills required to advance.

Classes are taught at both Tierra Verde Golf Club and Chester Ditto Golf Course.

Each level consists of four weeks of instruction. We also feature a Junior League, where young golfers who have participated in Level 3 and up can compete against other program members.

A graduate level has been also added to allow students who have completed all four levels of the program to continue to enhance their skill levels. Students receive a membership card good for discounts at all Arlington Golf facilities!

Arlington Golf’s Level 2 program is designed for anyone who has either completed the beginner level and has trouble breaking 100 or has taken golf lessons in the past and wishes to become more consistent.

The main focus of the class is the full swing. This class will also cover aspects of the short game including chipping, pitching and putting.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITH! The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy swim lessons on weekends and weeknights.

Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of nine weeks.

Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks.

Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages.

LEVEL ASSESSMENT The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.

We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly.

The back crawl and the breaststroke are introduced in Level 4, as well as the basics of turning at a wall.

Prerequisite: Participants entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3.

Level 5 - STROKE Refinement

The objectives of Level 5 are to coordinate and refine strokes.

Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

Level 3 - STROKE DEVELOPMENT

The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke and to coordinate the front crawl.

They are introduced to the scissors kick and the dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

Water Safety Instructor

Learning Objectives: Recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers and active and passive drowning victims; recognize aquatic emergencies and act promptly and appropriately; perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; recognize and care for possible spinal cord injuries; learn to provide first aid and CPR. Attendance at all classes is required! Times are subject to change.

Prerequisites: 25 yards Frontcrawl, Backcrawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke, 15 yards Butterfly, 1 minute tread and backfloat. All strokes must be performed at Level 4 skill level. Must be at least 16 years of age and must attend all classes!

Class times are subject to change.

Candidates successfully completing the class will be certified in Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years old to enroll in this class and able to swim a total of 300 yards demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke. Must be able to swim 20 yds., submerge and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yds. back to the starting point within 1 minute 40 seconds.

GAYLE HOWINGTON A Q UAT I C S D I V I S I O N

ayle Howington says she can never remember not knowing how to swim. She started her journey with swimming pools as a 16-year-old lifeguard in Longview, Texas. Roll the calendar forward to 2014 and she is still in the water and loving it a mere 56 years later!

Her career as a water professional has far exceeded the notion of getting a good suntan on a pool deck while lifeguarding. She became an accomplished tennis player, swimmer, teacher, pool manager and matriarch for the Aquatics Division. Arlington is a better place because of Gayle’s love for children, swimming and water safety.

Gayle has worked for the Aquatics Division since 1986. “During my years with the Parks and Recreation Department, I have worn many hats and seen many changes and the best change I have seen was when (Aquatics

Manager) Maria Campbell and (Aquatics Program Coordinator) Olivia Bradley took over the Aquatics Division. I have truly been blessed to have the privilege of working with these two ladies”, said Howington.

“Hugh Smith Indoor Pool is my baby. I love seeing children learn how to swim who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate because of money or transportation challenges. Many of our customers fortunately live close enough that they can walk to Hugh”, Howington explains.

“I feel that for every child we teach to swim that will be one less person we will see as a drowning statistic.”

She has also witnessed the rebuilds and programming for Helen Wessler Play Pool, Howard Moore Play Pool and the Randol Mill Family Aquatics Center. In 1987, Howington was part of the management team that oversaw the opening of Bolden Pool in Vandergriff Park. She noted that the shiny new 50-meter pool was extremely well received by the community and that it hosted approximately 800 visitors each day through the entire summer.

CLARENCE FOSTER PARK The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department recently completed a renovation project at Clarence Foster Park in west Arlington.

The 15-acre park, named after the former Arlington City Council member and Water Commissioner when Lake Arlington was built, is beginning to look better than ever.

The project, slated to be completed in August 2014, will include a new 8-foot-wide, concrete “Hike & Bike Trail” that circles the park, with 5 new benches along the route.

The lighted trail also ties into existing trails in Kelley Park and Rush Creek Linear Park.

In addition, the Clarence Foster Park will have a new, shaded playground with separate areas of equipment designed for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds, and eight stationary pieces of exercise equipment for adults located in four separate locations adjacent to the trail.

The added security lighting on the trail, fully-renovated playground, drinking fountain, benches, trail improvements, and 64

the new exercise equipment were funded through the 2008 Bond Referendum.

PARK IMPROVEMENTS: • Shaded playground with separate areas of equipment for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds • Eight stationary pieces of exercise equipment for adults (located in four separate locations adjacent to the trail) • Drinking fountain and ADA picnic table • A new concrete pad for the existing picnic tables • Eight-foot-wide, concrete “Hike & Bike Trail” with five new benches located along the newly lighted trail • Lighted parking lot “The new parking lot, grading and drainage work are a part of the Rush Creek Flood Mitigation project area, which includes 3 parks: Kelley Park, Clarence Foster Park, and Rush Creek Linear Park,” Park Project Manager Kurt Beilharz said.

“It was all wrapped into one large-scale project along with improvements to public water supply lines and sanitary sewer lines.

It gave us a great opportunity to improve the connection from the trail loop in Clarence Foster Park, over to the existing trail spine that runs through Kelley and Rush Creek Linear parks.

“Clarence Foster Park and the natural open space immediately east of it is now a beautiful place to go walking/jogging, bike riding, bird watching and more.”

The Mobile Litter Unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification of public spaces and neighborhoods. This MLU program will assist in the strengthening of our neighborhoods, beautification of right of ways, parks spaces and promote the efforts of Keep Arlington Beautiful.

The Lab is located at the East Arlington Branch Library and supports teens in grades 7th-12th with interests in science, engineering and robotics. The Studio is located at the George W. Hawkes Central Library, in the basement next to the Teen Area. It is a space for teens who are interested in the digital arts such as digital photography, videography, graphic arts, creative writing, web design and music.

Teen Zone is located at the Northeast Branch and is open afterschool, Monday through Thursday. It is a safe place to hang out with friends after school.

Lake Arlington is a municipally owned multi-purpose reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply, and for recreational purposes. The reservoir is located on Village Creek in Tarrant County at the western edge of Arlington. The City of Arlington, recognizing the need for additional water supply, began construction of the lake in 1956 and completed the project March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 2,250 surface acres and has a watershed of 143 square miles. The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

Lake Arlington has various facilities for your enjoyment. There are two parks located along Lake Arlington’s eastern shore, Richard Simpson Park (6300 W. Arkansas Ln.) to the north and Bowman Springs Park (7003 Poly Webb Rd.) to the south.

Special attractions at these parks include boat launches, picnic areas, BBQ grills and restrooms. Pavilions are available for rent at both parks. Richard Simpson Park also has the Lake Arlington Activity Room, which can be reserved for private functions. A recreation permit is required to place, operate or keep any boat or other craft on Lake Arlington, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, barges, personal watercraft and sailboards.

Lake Fees Daily - $5; Annual - $30; Senior (60+) Annual - $15 Paddling the Lake Enjoy paddling along the shores of beautiful Lake Arlington or the Trinity River to enjoy a taste of nature in the middle of this urban center. Put-in and take-out areas are marked by signs. Launches are allowed only from designated areas at Richard Simpson Park, Bowman Springs Park and Eugene McCray Park. A recreation permit is required for the paddling trail, which can be obtained in the Lake Office at Richard Simpson Park.

BOAT RENTAL Don’t own a boat? No problem! Rent our 24’ Suntracker pontoon boat (11 max capacity) or the 14’ Tracker jon boat (3 max capacity).

Bob Duncan Center is available to rent seven days a week and can be reserved by room or as an entire facility. LAKE ARLINGTON RENTALS

Planning an event? The Lake Arlington Activity Room is the perfect place for many events such as wedding receptions, reunions, parties, meetings and more! The climate controlled room comfortably holds up to 75 people and includes tables, chairs, restrooms and a kitchen.

The Lake Room may be rented for a full day on weekends or holidays.

Full day or half day rentals are available on weekdays. During the summer, the room is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. The room contains two large picture windows that face the lake. The room is 28 feet by 46 feet and comfortably holds approximately 7080 people. For your convenience, we supply the room with 65 chairs and 15 three by six foot tables. Ventana Grille is located at Tierra Verde Golf Club and offers incredible food in a scene worth savoring. The casual dining atmosphere is complimented by sweeping views of our award winning golf course. RECREATION CENTERS

We have six recreation centers located throughout Arlington that can be reserved for your party needs. Entire centers can be rented and individual rooms are offered as well. All centers feature a kitchen with food prep area and an ice machine. Patrons can choose to provide their own food or our staff can assist with catering needs.
