from the president

There is a majestic tree in my small Delaware County backyard. It is a sycamore that the arborist who most recently cared for it believes to be more than 200 years old. It fills the sky above our deck, and, when the weather accommodates, I sit staring up at its limbs. In the spring, before it leafs out, the sculpture of those limbs is museum worthy.

(As I write this, a squirrel has paused on its climb, as if to appreciate the sycamore’s grandeur... and to reconsider the wisdom of the ascent.)

That this sycamore survives and still thrives is a remarkable gift. The details of its origin and how it has endured are lost to time. What it has witnessed, however, is written in our nation’s history. Thank goodness that, by happy accident, our sycamore is still here to provide habitat and joy and to bear witness to the future.

Of course, we can’t rely on “happy accidents” to ensure thriving, resilient ecosystems and communities in the face of sprawling development, a changing climate, and dramatic loss of biodiversity. That requires strategic protection of essential lands and intentional, sustained stewardship of the natural resources present on them.

Natural Lands—thanks to the foresight of previous generations of our leaders and supporters, and to the current generosity and engagement of a broad community—does both of these things at a wide-reaching regional scale. It is a point of great organizational pride.

Hopewell Big Woods in northern Chester and southern Berks Counties—described in this issue’s cover article—is a wonderful example of the benefits of this approach; one pursued by a dynamic public-private partnership. There, Natural Lands, partner land trusts, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Game Commission, local municipalities, landowners, and a variety of private and public funders (with help from supporters like you) have made a long-term commitment to the protection and stewardship of this remarkable landscape.

Far from an accident, the effort has been intentional and sustained. The results are measured not just in acres saved and restored. They’re also measured in the health of streams and wildlife. That’s why salamanders and other amphibians, among other wildlife, are thriving there.

It’s also why there will be a vast forest there for a very long time to come. One that will bear witness to the efforts of all of those who have worked hard to ensure its survival.

happy trails.

Natural Lands’ trail system is an essential part of our mission to connect people to the outdoors. Without trails, our preserves and public garden cannot be experienced up close. Two of our preserves have had significant trail improvements recently.

Bear Creek Preserve staff added trails to provide access to a new, 373-acre section of the Luzerne County preserve, which was added about a year ago.

“We wanted visitors to be able to enjoy special features within the new addition, including unusual rock outcrops and beautiful outlooks,” said Bear Creek Preserve Manager Josh Saltmer. “We took this opportunity to adjust the entire trail system at Bear Creek, rerouting some sections to help protect areas that are vulnerable to overuse and erosion and responding to visitor feedback about a few confusing trail intersections.”

The preserve’s trail markers now include the name of the color-coded trails written on the markers to help visitors who have trouble distinguishing colors.

Finally, we updated all the interactive trail maps on the AllTrails app so that visitors can plan the right route within the preserve’s 20-mile trail system.

At Bryn Coed Preserve in Chester Springs, our stewardship staff completed the construction of new trails on the northernmost part of the property (north of St. Matthews Rd.), which lead to a scenic overlook. Construction of a small parking lot at that section of the preserve has begun.

Caleb Arrowood, assistant preserve manager, noted, “Much of the initial trail clearing work was done by Eagle Scout Ryan Christman, and Natural Lands’ volunteers have been fantastic helping remove vines and keep the trail clear of branches and other debris from storms.”

This new section completes the red trail as a 5.5-mile loop and brings the total trail network at Bryn Coed to more than 10 miles. W

a new legacy begins.

Natural Lands’ Board of Trustees has elected Susan Mucciarone as chairperson. Susan— who retired recently from her role as executive director, private wealth, at Glenmede—has served on the Board since 2014.

As chairperson, she will bring a strong commitment to Natural Lands’ mission, impressive leadership skills, and a readiness to engage deeply in organizational priorities. Susan’s relationship-driven approach to leadership, experience with strategic growth plans, and passion for protecting the natural world make her an ideal leader of our board.

Susan succeeds Peter Hausmann, who retired as chairperson after serving in the role over two separate tenures for a combined 20 years. Peter’s influence on the organization—and on open space preservation at the local, state, and national levels—has been nothing short of extraordinary. During his tenure as chairperson, Natural Lands preserved 36,972 acres of open space, added 7,400 acres to its network of nature preserves, opened Stoneleigh: a natural garden, increased staff capacity, launched important engagement programs, and made its properties more accessible for people across the region, resulting in a 10-fold increase in visitation.

We all hope to leave a legacy. Peter’s is deep and will last for generations. Fortunately, the story of his legacy is still being written because he will remain an active member of our board and continue to inspire us all.

Welcome to the helm, Susan! W

Invasive Plant Species

Identification Guide

All invasive plants have several traits in common: they grow fast, seed prolifically, spread rapidly and aggressively, and lack the diseases and predators that keep their populations in balance. As a result, these plants can out-compete other species and destroy diversity, causing a ripple effect throughout the ecosystem.

Controlling them is often a top priority—and a challenging task— for those who steward natural lands, including park maintenance employees.

In an effort to share what our stewardship staff have learned over decades, Natural Lands has developed a set of invasive plant identification cards that feature photos and key features of common invasives and information on how to control them. The cards also include information on plants that look similar and could be easily confused with the invasive one. These laminated cards are designed to be used on-site at township parks and natural areas as crews go about their regular maintenance tasks. W

On a rainy evening in March, Kim White donned boots and a reflective vest in preparation for a long night outdoors. Brandishing a plastic five-gallon bucket and a flashlight, Kim joined a group of other wildlife enthusiasts for the annual “Sally Rally.” This early spring-time effort—organized by French Creek State Park—to help salamanders and other amphibians safely cross our region’s roadways is critical to their survival. So, too, is protection of the wetlands and vernal pools they migrate to for mating season.

Kim and her family live in North Coventry Township, Chester County, not far from Natural Lands’ Crow’s Nest Preserve. Their 7.5-acre property is at the headwaters of Pigeon Creek. Spring’s rainy weather means a portion of the White’s land turns into a large pond—the ideal place for salamanders and other amphibians to mate. The pond is ephemeral—it disappears in warmer, dryer weather—which means there are no fish to eat the salamander eggs or larvae. Eastern hellbenders and common mudpuppies are two of the more colorfully named salamander species that call Pennsylvania home. In fact, you can find 22 species of salamander in the Commonwealth. They’re a shy bunch— secretive and nocturnal—and quite particular about their neighborhood. Because their smooth skin must remain moist, they can live only in damp areas, and they need vernal—or seasonal—pools to reproduce. Several of these species are at risk, including the rare Jefferson salamander, a species of “special concern,” and the blue spotted salamander, an endangered species. Other at-risk amphibians in our region include Fowler’s toad and Cope’s gray treefrog.

biodiversity in the Big Woods.

Amphibians are considered environmental bellwethers. Since they live both on land and in water and their bodies are permeable, they are sensitive to changes in both environments and can warn us when things are out of balance. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) describes salamanders in particular as “sentinels of ecosystem integrity.” Their population trends can be detected more quickly and with fewer years of monitoring effort than other vertebrate species, including birds, small mammals, and other amphibians.

Globally, one-third to one-half of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction, with probably more than 120 species already gone in recent years. They are not alone. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, we are currently facing an extinction crisis that is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural species extinction rate. The leading threats

invasive species, climate change, population growth, and other human activities.

We know that saving open space is key to combatting these stresses. It’s no coincidence that salamanders thrive—even if they need a little help crossing the road—in and around French Creek State Park and private properties like Kim White’s. These are part of a much larger conservation landscape called Hopewell Big Woods, the largest remaining contiguous forest in southeastern Pennsylvania. Located in northern Chester County and southern Berks County, the region is approximately 73,000 acres or 114 square miles. In addition to the state park, the area includes Hopewell Furnace National Historic site, state game lands, county parks, and our 712-acre Crow’s Nest Preserve. In fact, more than 21,000 acres are conserved to date.

become that by accident. The area was identified as a priority for conservation in 1998 by Natural Lands conservation staff when satellite photographs revealed 28,000 acres of unbroken forest around the state park. Dr. Jim Thorne, then Natural Lands’ senior director of science, created a conservation plan for the landscape with support from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

In 2001, Dr. Thorne presented his research and recommendations to a group of 15 public entities, non-profits, and private individuals with an interest in the region, and the Hopewell Big Woods Partnership was born. Now comprised of some 40 government agencies, private non-profits, and municipal entities, the Partnership works to protect and preserve the landscape while enhancing its enjoyment for this and future generations.

new tools for conservation. It’s no surprise that the technology that allowed us to see Hopewell Big Woods from space in the late 90s has evolved significantly since then. Today, we use what is called geographic information systems (GIS) to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data. And we are leveraging the power of these systems as we wrestle with this big picture question: where can saving open space best combat the stresses our region faces and help build resilience?

“The reality is that we can’t save every acre of remaining open space in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey,” said Todd Sampsell, Natural Lands’ vice president of conservation. “So, we must ask ourselves: Which conservation projects are most important and have the most impact?

Hopewell Big Woods

“We’ve identified some of the major, big-picture concerns impacting our region and begun collecting data relevant to those issues to analyze using mapping software,” said Todd.

We’ve queried individual data sets: Where are the important migration corridors and contiguous forests to support at-risk wildlife species, like the salamanders and toads? Which parts of our region are most susceptible to flooding? Where is development pressure the greatest? Where can we prevent stream impairment to improve water quality? Where are the population centers and heat islands? Where is there inequitable access to the outdoors?

By mapping the answers to each of these questions using existing data, Natural Lands has identified

places in the region where stressors and conservation priorities overlap. These overlapping locations are where our conservation work can help landscapes and human communities withstand stressors—big storms, changing weather patterns, floods and drought, loss of habitat—and bounce back quickly after a significant disturbance. That’s resilience.

“I applaud our conservation team’s commitment to data-informed decision making,” said Oliver Bass, president of Natural Lands. “This tool gives us a blueprint for where we can have the greatest impact. The successful outcomes achieved by our colleagues and partners in Hopewell Big Woods are an inspiration and a model of the type of proactive conservation we look to emulate and build upon.” W

Unami Hills. food, shelter, safe passage.

A landscape’s capacity to support a diversity of wildlife— through food, shelter, and safe paths for migration— is one example of several factors Natural Lands uses to determine where the organization can help build resilient landscapes.

Identifying and pursuing protection of ecologically valuable properties means saving migration corridors and essential habitat for at-risk species. This map, produced by Natural Lands’ GIS Director Megan Boatright, shows the most important remaining wildlife habitats and migration corridors in southeastern Pennsylvania. Not surprisingly, the Kittatinny Ridge and forested areas in the Poconos are prominent habitats in our region. However, other more suburban and urban greenways pop out, like Hopewell Big Woods, parklands in urban Philadelphia, and the Unami Creek greenway in northern Montgomery and Bucks Counties.

Unami Hills is an interconnected mosaic of mature woodlands, rocky outcrops, and more than 24 miles of well-protected waterways. The 15,000-acre area is an extraordinary combination of scale, species diversity, streams, and sylvan sanctuaries.

As Todd Sampsell put it, “Unami Hills is clearly a priority from a wildlife standpoint. Once we layered in the additional data sets—climate resilience, important water resources, prevention of sprawl—the landscape really lit up. It’s an area we’ve worked in for years and—from a resiliency and impact standpoint—it’s an important place for our continued land protection efforts.”

The area was originally inhabited by the Unami band of the Lenape. Unami translates to “People Who Live Down-River.” Due to the massive boulders and outcrops, the land was less desirable for farming by Native peoples and for the European colonists who followed.

The mixed deciduous interior forest provides a home for gray fox, mink, eastern coyote, and wood frog. Bird species that rely on deep woodlands thrive here: Scarlet Tanager, Louisiana Waterthrush, American Redstart, and Prothonotary Warbler. At least 30 species of concern have been observed.

The Unami Hills conservation area has roughly 31 miles of perennial streams that support aquatic life like redbelly turtle, northern red salamander, and pineland pimpernel.

To date, nearly 2,500 acres in the Unami Hills are under Natural Lands’ permanent protection. W

looking downstream.

About a half-mile as the crow flies from the Philadelphia Airport, amid the tidal marsh and mudflats at the southernmost point of Darby Creek, a conservation movement began. It started with a handful of birdwatchers led by an intrepid accountant—the founder of Natural Lands—who worked to save this watery habitat from ruin. They prevailed, but this was just one chapter in a long and sometimes fraught story of a downstream habitat and the communities that live and work there.

Historically, the area at the bottom of the Darby Creek Watershed stretched for more than 5,000 acres and was a plentiful landscape for fishing, hunting, and foraging. By the time Allston Jenkins and fellow activists stepped up in defense of the habitat in 1953, Tinicum Marsh had shrunk to just 200 acres after a century of infill and urban expansion. Their conservation success prevented a plan to dump dredging spoils from the Schuylkill River into the Marsh. Instead, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers turned to the nearby neighborhood of Eastwick, pumping about three million cubic yards of polluted sediment there.

At that time, Eastwick was one of the only racially integrated sections of Philadelphia with Polish and Italian immigrants living side-by-side with African Americans. Residents enjoyed a semi-rural lifestyle with access to

nearby waterways for swimming, bathing, and crabbing. Even with a thriving population of some 19,000 people, Eastwick was still 60 percent open space with the wetlands absorbing periodic overflow from Darby and Cobbs Creeks.

Just a few years later, in 1958, city planners targeted the area as a place to relocate low-income populations being displaced by redevelopment projects in North and West Philadelphia. This “urban renewal” plan demolished 4,000 houses and displaced more than 8,000 people. Development continued in fits and starts through the 1980s.

Over the decades, as the marshland was filled in and paved over, Eastwick has experienced increasingly severe flooding. Most of the land in the neighborhood is between four and 12 feet above sea level. In the past two

decades, the Philadelphia Water Department estimates 130 properties have flooded 10 times or more, and the entire area was under four feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Since Floyd, parts of Eastwick have been severely damaged by three tropical storms and three hurricanes.

Recently, Darby Creek Valley Association enlisted Natural Lands to develop a Resilience, Conservation, and Management Plan for the Darby Creek Watershed. All the water that falls on this 78-sqaure-mile area makes its way into the streams and creeks—123 linear miles of waterways in total—that feed Darby Creek. About half a million people live in this densely populated geography, which spans four counties and 31 municipalities. Eastwick is at the very southern end of this vast area.

Said Rick Tralies, senior director of planning with Natural Lands, “Everything flows to Eastwick and the Tinicum Marsh. Land use decisions in Radnor, Haverford, and Lower Merion impact the communities downstream,

which is why a successful plan must include inter-municipal cooperation.”

Intensified storm events, disruption of weather patterns, and more severe heat waves in recent years have compounded the stresses on the watershed, accelerating the need for a plan that takes these increased stressors into account.

“In addition, a worthy plan for the Darby Creek Watershed must recognize the racial and socio-economic disparities among our watershed communities. Lowerincome communities shoulder disproportionate pollution burdens and relative lack of access to watershed resources,” said Dr. Jaclyn Rhoads, president of Darby Creek Valley Association’s Board of Directors.

The planning effort got underway last year with funding from the Delaware County Green Ways program, the Foundation for Delaware County, Darby Creek Valley Association, and the William Penn Foundation. The planning process includes mapping analysis, key

person interviews, a study of precedents in other communities, and a review of zoning, subdivision, and land-development ordinances at each of the 31 townships within the watershed. While the project is only nearing the halfway point, the partners are determined to create an actionable, cohesive, and climate-resilient blueprint for the Darby Creek Watershed.

“We cannot undo the past 400 years of stream degradation, but we can begin to better manage the watershed,” said Rick. “A plan won’t stop climate change and flooding, but it can help communities be more prepared for its effects.”

He added, “And of course a plan can’t reverse decades of environmental and racial injustice. We must recognize the importance of listening to community members within the watershed, hear their needs and concerns, and engage with them in shaping strategies.”

saving open sp

July 1 – December 31, 2023

Natural Lands has been protecting open space since 1953. In that time, we have completed hundreds of conservation projects, each unique in its own way. Saving Open Space is the first of our three mission tenets, and we go about it in a few different ways:

we save land to keep and care for Natural Lands is unique among the region’s conservation organizations because of our large network of nature preserves. We are committed to restoring habitats and stewarding natural resources on these 23,000 acres, and to sharing these special places with everyone.

we save land to give away

Because of our expertise in buying land outright (and in securing grant money to pay for it), we help conservation-minded entities acquire open space by buying land and then “flipping” it to these partners to care for in perpetuity. Through this approach, we help add hundreds of acres to state parks, forests, and municipal open spaces every year.

we save land through conservation easements

Much of the land we protect, another 26,000 acres, is privately held by individuals who have chosen to restrict its development through a conservation easement. An easement is a voluntary, legally binding agreement that permanently limits a property’s use based on landowner wishes and applies to present and future owners of the land.

Natural Lands more than doubled the size of the Ruth Zimmerman Natural Area by purchasing this 47-acre wooded property and transferring it to the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry.

“This property is among more than 700 acres that Natural Lands has helped add to the state forest system’s holdings to date,” said Jack Stefferud, senior director of land protection for Natural Lands. “Rather than becoming a housing development, it will be managed by the Bureau of Forestry as a wild and natural area—a place of scenic beauty and protected plant and animal communities. We are thrilled at this outcome.”

In addition to forest and farmland, the property includes wetlands and Antietam Creek tributaries, part of the vast, interconnected network of waterways that feed the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. These wetlands are home to a diversity of species, including some whose populations are in decline.

“It is great to know that this land will be preserved in perpetuity,” said former landowner Tom Nordhoy. “The variety of wildlife on the property—including songbirds— is extensive. It is truly a natural treasure which I hope will be enjoyed by all.”

The forested Manowczak property is now part of the adjacent William Penn State Forest – Gibraltar Hill, after being purchased by Natural Lands and transferred to the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry. This is the fifth addition to the Gibraltar Hill tract through Natural Lands’ conservation efforts.

“The William Penn Forest District is pleased to work with neighbors and partners to enhance conservation on the landscape,” said Rick Hartlieb, assistant district forester with the PA Bureau of Forestry. “The conservation of this land will protect road frontage to the Gibraltar Hill tract and provided expanded opportunities to provide habitat improvements and expand the tracts trail network.”

Thanks to a conservation easement, the bucolic farm vista, rolling terrain, steep slopes, waterways, and woodlands of the Aguilar property will all remain intact forever. Said Natural Lands Senior Director of Land Protection Jack Stefferud, “The property is really special because of the water there. Beaver Run and one of its tributaries cut through the northern portion of the land. The area around

The entire Beaver Run basin is designated as having Exceptional Value water quality by the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Water from Beaver Run makes its way to French Creek, which joins the Schuylkill River just upstream of Norristown. These waterways are important sources of drinking water and recreation for the Delaware Valley, making their protection essential to our region.

East Nantmeal Township plans to place a public trail easement on a portion of the property along Horseshoe Trail Road. The farm is within the Nantmeal Village Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It connects already conserved land to the south with the Village of Nantmeal.

Sadsbury Township

Key Partners: Conservancy Grant Program, Commissioners of Chester County, Pennsylvania; PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund - LT; Virginia Cretella Mars Foundation

Many of Natural Lands’ properties have grown to their present sizes through small additions like this three-acre addition to Sadsbury Woods Preserve. The property, once an in-holding on the western boundary of the nature preserve, will be reforested to provide additional habitat for wildlife, particularly migratory songbirds.

The forested land of Sadsbury Woods provides critical habitat for songbirds like Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrush, and several species of warblers that spend winters in warmer climes but use large, connected forests in our region as their breeding grounds. Many of these migrant species have declined because the woods they rely on are disappearing or being subdivided. Forests that are fragmented into smaller plots by roads and developments favor predators that thrive along the edge of the woods.; these include raccoons, snakes, Blue Jays, domestic cats, and Brown-headed Cowbirds.

Located at the headwaters of Buck Run, a major tributary to Brandywine Creek, the preserve also helps to keep the stream clean and clear.

“Just before we purchased this three-acre property, the owners cleared it of all trees and shrubs in to build a house there,” said Sadsbury Woods Preserve Manager Erin Smith. “We will work to reforest the land so that it can provide better ecological services like storing carbon, absorbing rainwater to ease flooding, cleaning and filtering drinking water, and giving wildlife food and shelter.”

Key Partners: Conservancy Grant Program, Commissioners of Chester County, Pennsylvania; East Coventry Township; PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund

East Coventry Township pieced together the East Coventry Nature Preserve by acquiring small parcels and conservation easements, resulting in more than 150 acres available for residents to enjoy.

The latest addition is the Hallman parcel, which is completely wooded. These trees help protect a tributary to Pigeon Creek, a high-quality stream. Their roots create channels for rainwater to soak deep into the soil instead of washing into the stream and carrying with it soil, chemicals, and other pollutants.

“Natural Lands has been partnering with East Coventry Township for many years now,” said Jack Stefferud. “It’s been rewarding to watch the community’s open space efforts yield such great results.”

“The land has been farmed by many generations of our family. Preserving it was an easy decision for us,” said Jay Zeigler, speaking on behalf of his extended family. “We cherish this land that has provided both food and memories throughout the generations. We inherited the land from our parents, and their wish was to keep it farmland instead of another housing development.”

The farm is almost entirely in agricultural use, consisting of a rotation of corn, soybeans, and hay. The property includes about 1,110 feet of a first-order tributary of Hogestown Run, a tributary of the Conodoguinet Creek. Conodoguinet Creek, whose Native American name means “a long way with many bends,” flows to the Susquehanna River, which eventually empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

“Preservation of this farm means protecting water quality, both locally and all the way downstream,” said Robyn Jeney, land protection project manager for Natural Lands. “More than 18 million people and 3,600 species of plants and animals call the Chesapeake Bay Watershed home. Land conservation within the watershed is one of the best ways to protect this remarkable ecological treasure.”

More than two years ago, Natural Lands reached out to The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia as part of a proactive effort to identify and preserve the largest remaining unprotected properties in southeastern Pennsylvania. As a conservation-minded nonprofit, the Sisters of St. Francis welcomed the opportunity to divest a portion of their lands for open space and public use.

Natural Lands was able to secure grant funding for Aston Township’s purchase; the Township will own and operate the land as a passive-use park with hiking trails

through meadows and woodlands. Aston Township also committed $100,000 of its own funds to support the project.

The property consists of woodlands and an open meadow and is located just 400 feet from West Branch Chester Creek, a PA DEP-designated Trout Stocking Fishery. Preserving open space is one of the most impactful ways to protect water quality. Natural areas act like a sponge, helping rainwater seep into the ground where pollutants get filtered out and water supplies are replenished. Were the land to have been developed, more rainwater would have washed directly into the creek, carrying soil and pollutants with it.

Camp Laughing Waters, which has been run as a camp by Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania since the 1950s, is now protected with a conservation easement. The Girls Scouts will continue as owners of the land, and the easement—a voluntary and permanent land protection agreement—will ensure the camp remains open space so future generations can make memories there, too.

The breathtakingly beautiful land includes two miles of Swamp Creek and its tributary, Minister Creek, with about 30 acres of ponds and wetlands. Swamp Creek is the largest tributary to Perkiomen Creek, which flows to the Schuylkill River.

PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PA

Most of the property is wooded, offering essential habitat for myriad songbirds that rely on dense forest habitat.

“Until now, Camp Laughing Waters was the largest unprotected land remaining in Montgomery County,” said Kate Raman, conservation project manager with Natural Lands. “The property’s permanent preservation has been a priority for decades. We are beyond thrilled to be able to celebrate this conservation success. It’s a win for future generations of Girl Scouts, for wildlife, and for everyone living in this region who will continue to benefit from the fresh air, clean water, climate mitigation, and other ecological services this land provides.”

Key Partners: Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education

This 24-acre parcel, named for a time when Scouts camped there, is now preserved forever with a conservation easement. A mid- to late-successional healthy native forest covers the entire property, which includes a steeply sloping valley and the headwaters of Green Tree Run, a tributary to the Schuylkill River.

Natural Lands also holds an easement on Schuylkill Center’s 340-acre main campus, across Port Royal Avenue from the Boy Scout Tract property. The two properties amount to the largest preserved private property in Philadelphia—an extraordinary conservation accomplishment.

“This is an important win for open space in the City as development continues to replace green space,” says Oliver Bass, president of Natural Lands. “We applaud Schuylkill Center and the community for coming together to find this conservation solution.” W

depth of field.

David Korbonits knows his way around a garden. He spent 28 years as a horticulturist at Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin, DE, before retiring in 2018. His area of specialty was Mt. Cuba’s meadow garden, teeming with native grasses and wildflowers.

But, years before his career in horticulture, David’s happy place was behind his camera. He studied professional photography in college and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in the same field, all with the goal of one day teaching others. The recession that greeted him upon graduation meant jobs were scarce, so David moved back to his hometown of West Chester, PA, to look for work wherever he could find it.

“The house I grew up in was in the middle of the woods,” he recalls. “My playground was the outdoors.”

So, perhaps it was only natural that David began to develop an interest in horticulture. When he retired from Mt. Cuba Center, he knew he wanted to keep promoting native plants. When he heard that Stoneleigh: a natural garden was looking for volunteer ambassadors, he found the perfect fit.

time to get magical shots of pollinating bees, courting songbirds, and hovering hawks.

“It’s hard to quantify the impact of David’s volunteering at Stoneleigh,” said Director Ethan Kauffman. “Beyond the help he provides documenting the plants and creatures at the garden, through posting his photos on social media, we reach thousands of people who may never have the chance to visit us.”

David is thrilled to have found this bridge between his two passions: horticulture and photography. He’s also discovered how much fun it is to serve as a Stoneleigh Ambassador. “I love meeting people who are curious about Stoneleigh and watch them leave with a smile having learned something new about the place and about native plants.”

Perhaps David’s dream of becoming a teacher has come true after all. W

welcome.

Natural Lands proudly welcomes Beth Albright to our Board of Trustees.

Beth Albright, who joined Natural Lands’ Board of Trustees earlier this year, started her love affair with nature early. “I grew up on a farm in up-state New York, so I got to experience firsthand the joy and privilege of spending a childhood outdoors.”

She and her husband, Scott, both Penn State alums, were committed to making sure their kids had the same opportunity. “We had them outdoors from the get-go.”

Beth even participated in multi-day adventure races— races through wilderness areas that included trekking, mountain biking, paddling, and other disciplines— training with her children in tow. “You can go to a lot of places with a kid in a Kelty backpack.”

It’s no wonder, then, that when Beth and Scott decided to create a donor advised fund with the Foundation for Delaware County in 2018, their children were involved in deciding what kinds of causes the family should support. “Each of us, including our two kids, who were 15 and 13 at the time, identified our individual areas of interest. It was amazing how aligned we ended up being—with all four of us prioritizing support for the environment and animal welfare,” said Beth. Those priorities prompted the Foundation to introduce the Albrights to Natural Lands as an example of a non-profit well-regarded for its conservation impact across the region.

That initial connection has deepened in the years since. “I love Natural Lands’ commitment to saving open space,” said Beth, who, along with Scott, has served on our organization’s President’s Council since 2020. “Natural Lands has the capacity, know-how, and partnerships to make a meaningful difference at a time when our world really needs it. I’m excited to be involved with the organization at this new level.”

Beth is a seasoned Fortune 500 board director and former C-Suite executive with deep experience
