Have it your way:
Log, Timber Frame, Hybrid
• Log Homes—The greatest on earth
• Timber Frame—Our specialty
• Hybrid Homes—Our trademark
Explore your options; after all, it’s YOUR dream!

We realized a long time ago that there are many ways to build a home. Any of our home designs can be constructed using one of three approaches: log, timber frame, or hybrid.

Log Homes are as old an idea as America itself. Timber Frame is an even older method of building. Hybrid is the newest and hottest trend in housing. We have them all!
No matter which building system you choose, we go beyond the traditional log and timber approach to customize your home with sophisticated features that create a unique look. Here’s where the distinctive beauty of your home will shine as you choose the materials for your beams, siding, roof, and accents.
Many materials are available to give your home a superbly natural look with distinctive character. We call these Natural Elements,® and all are reclaimed, recovered, recycled, or renewable. If you want a certain look, such as Western Frontier or Eastern Appalachian, we can help you select a palette of materials to create that look.
Many of the Natural Elements® in our homes use materials that we reclaim in our

Natural Element Homes workshop. This approach is ecologically sound and saves you money. We fashion items such as brackets, braces, and rafter tails from lumber that has been culled for reuse. This means that your builder doesn’t have to invent each architectural element specified by the designer. The mill-crafted elements are shipped to your job site, where they are simply assembled, trimmed to fit, and installed. This gives you custom craftsman construction without all the extra labor costs.
Natural Elements® are provided by nature and refined by us. We help you select from the many materials available to determine the key architectural elements of your home.
Time and trends mean nothing to the perennial beauty of log homes. The most basic of construction, yet the most dynamic of structures, log homes are a favorite of those people who long for simple comfort and beautiful design. Hand-crafted or milled
logs of eastern white pine or other species are used with the utmost precision to create a home that uniquely fits your personality and lifestyle.
Many Americans have a love affair with log homes. Perhaps it’s because these unique homes are a big part of our national heritage. Can you imagine what the early American pioneers must have thought about all that beautiful timber? Perhaps the renewability of logs also plays a part in the mass appeal to Americans. Just think where we would be if we had not had these valuable resources to build our nation with. And think where we will be if we ever fail to manage these resources properly.
Natural Element Homes’ founder is a degreed and certified forester, and Natural Element Homes will always practice responsible, sustainable forestry and will only do business with like-minded mills and land holders. With these practices in place, Natural Element® Log Homes will be around forever, for your kids and mine!
Timber Frame has never looked so good… Natural Element Homes!
Warmth, strength and security: The hallmark of timber frame construction is the joy of homeowners.
Utilizing timber post and beam, with wood joinery held in place by wooden pegs, timber frame structures are made to last

hundreds of years. Allowing the homeowner to vary the wood look throughout the home, timber frame uses a mixture of tongue & groove, drywall and other materials to create a strikingly beautiful, energy efficient, building system.
Timber frame construction itself is a centuries old art form. Historic yet modern, timber frame homes offer a best-ofboth-worlds experience. The style itself is a timeless architectural form anchored in antiquity; however, the exposed posts and beams distinctly express 21st century elegance. The timber frame is an intricate web of parts that both support and beautify a home — every piece is as necessary to the structure as it is to the style.
Timber framing is a specific type of post-and-beam construction made of solid wood timbers, usually joined by mortise-and-tenon joinery and traditional wooden pegs. In timber framing, joinery is practically the definition of the product. Without joinery there is a structure made with post & beam, but it is not a timber frame. Most timber joints are variations on the pegged mortise-and-tenon — a tongue on one timber is received by a slot in the other.
Our frames are precision cut by our factory network using high-tech CNC joinery machines to create pegged connections. If you enjoy viewing perfection, this cutting system achieves unbelievable results. The computer-driven CNC machines use CAD drawings, robotic arms, and a variety of heads and bits to precisely cut the intricate parts and pieces that make up the timber frame.
For the best of all worlds, choose a Natural Element® Hybrid!
Perhaps you prefer the simple beauty of logs for your entrance, but want the drama of timber frame in your living room. Or you have to have a stone fireplace for your outdoor living area. Using a combination of building techniques, and structural
and decorative elements, hybrid homes appeal to homeowners looking for the best of all worlds.
Who says beauty is only skin-deep? It’s obvious that Natural Element Homes are the most beautiful homes available. From the outside, you are captured by dramatic curb appeal. From the inside, you are surrounded by stunning good looks. But looks aren’t everything. Underneath the beauty lies the finest building system available. The Hybrid Building System® (HBS) is simply a

better way to build a structurally superior home, in less time, with less job site waste and at a higher standard of quality than has ever been possible. With the HBS, we have optimized the way homes are designed and built to provide you the highest level of flexibility and quality.
A Natural Element Home® built with The Hybrid Building System® combines the beauty of log, timber and other Natural Elements® with the quality and consistency of Engineered Wood Products (or conventional building materials). The HBS increases design efficiency by providing engineering documentation and materials schedules for the structural shell while utilizing non-structural log and timber systems as key architectural elements. The HBS delivers cost-effective curb appeal by utilizing factory-built Natural Elements® to dress the structural shell of the home. An HBS Natural Element Home® is a high-performance home with an elevated level of design and construction efficiency and unsurpassed beauty.

YOUR FAVORITE FLOORPLAN IN ANY OF OUR 3 SYSTEMS

A log home features solid logs for its perimeter structural walls. The walls of a log home are its most distinguishing feature, and Natural Element Homes offers a wide variety of log styles, cuts, finishes, and corner joinery. Our most widely chosen specie for logs is Eastern White Pine, but we also offer Western Red Cedar, Cypress, Southern Yellow Pine, and more. We also provide a pre-cut log wall system with logs cut-to-length, numbered and lettered to fit together with ease. We offer three methods of corner joinery, such as dovetail corners, saddle-notch corners, and butt-and-pass corners. And our pre-cut log wall systems come with a lifetime limited warranty that is transferable for up to 10 years should you choose to sell your home. But what sets us apart from other log home producers? … We build Natural Element Log Homes.

There are several considerations when choosing a log home company to work with, but none are more important than the culture of the company. Our culture is one of effectiveness, honesty, innovation, and quality. We are different. We don't just provide great log homes, we provide great experiences in planning, designing and building your home of homes, so feel free to dream. Our ultimate goal is for you to tell your friends and family that we did a great job for you.

At Natural Element Homes, we choose to do the following:
• Follow a strict code of ethics
• Grade our logs and timbers to ensure quality
• Provide a construction manual for clients and builders to illustrate proper construction techniques
• Provide innovative ideas to log building technologies
• Provide free information and advice to make smart choices.
But we don’t stop here. We have never been satisfied to simply follow the group of log home companies. We much prefer to lead

It's unique, it's classic, but mostly because it just calls you…and you just LOVE it — go with your heart. We can't wait to talk "log" with you…it's our language. imber frame homes feature large structural wooden beams visible throughout the interior which act as the structural skeleton of the home. The timbers are cut to fit together and connect with specialized joinery such as mortise-and-tennon connections held tightly together by wooden pegs. The timber frame serves the dual role of providing structure for the home as well as artistic beauty. Timber frame construction techniques have been used for hundreds of years throughout the world.

The true timber frame home may require more specialized labor and front-end costs and is generally the most costly of our building systems.
• Structural timber frame skeleton provides the structure of the home
• Timber frame throughout the entire home
• SIP Panel exterior enclosure
Timber frame joinery is either cut by hand or by use of computer controlled machinery (CNC). Once the free-standing timber frame structure is assembled, the timber frame is wrapped to form the outer enclosure of the home. Common methods utilized to wrap a frame include Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

The timber frame is wrapped with SIPs that span the large spaces between each timber of the frame. SIPs are made by gluing a sheet of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) to both sides of a solid foam core to form one monolithic panel. Common foam core types include Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and Polyurethane (URE). SIPs are typically pre-cut with CNC machinery to precisely fit the outside of the timber frame. SIPs are strong, energy efficient, and are known for their superior insulation capabilities.
Another common way to wrap a timber frame is to use conventional wood framing practices as common to a “stick-built” home — 2x6 framed walls and 2x framed roofs can be built around the timber frame to enclose it. True timber frame homes built in this manner will generally cost

about 20–30% more than a conventionally framed home that does not utilize structural timber frame. Natural Element Homes uses CNC equipment to produce high-quality, precision-milled timber frame systems. We offer Douglas Fir as our primary timber specie. We also use White Pine, Oak, Cypress, Western Red Cedar, and Southern Yellow Pine timber species. We produce both EPS and URE SIP panel systems to enclose our frames — keeping the elements out. Conventional stick-frame enclosures are also utilized.

A hybrid home utilizes conventional stick-built construction to provide the super structure of the home. Typically, some degree of timber frame is also included in the construction.
The timber frame is employed in specific areas of the home where “the wow factor” is most desired, such as in the great room, kitchen and dining areas. The remainder of the home can be constructed without the use of timber or with limited use of timber.
The look and feel of timber frame without all the cost. Can you say

Why is this so important? Flexibility and style. Perhaps you prefer the simple beauty of logs for your entrance but want the drama of timber frame in your living room. Or, you must have a stone fireplace in your living room. Using a combination of building techniques and structural or decorative elements, hybrid homes appeal to homeowners looking for the best of all worlds.
Hybrid homes often utilize timber components such as timber trusses, timber accents and beams, as well as other decorative timber elements to provide the look and feel of timber frame without all the cost.
The hybrid home is typically more cost-effective and offers maximum design flexibility:
• Conventional stick-built enclosure provides the structure of the home
• Structural or decorative timber or timber frame in parts of the home
• Timber trusses, accents and decorative components used
Timber components may be used on the interior and the exterior of the home. The Hybrid Building System® was developed and

This beautiful hybrid with it's gorgeous multi-toned shake says New England like none other, but no matter where you put this lodge you won't want to leave. From big spaces to small nooks, there is a spot for you.

Hybrid homes are typically clad on the exterior with a mix of different sidings and textures, such as vertical board-and-batten siding, horizontal lap siding or log siding, and cedar shingle siding. The blend of textures along with the use of timber accents generally provide a home with tremendous curb appeal.
The hybrid home approach represents a sustainable and environmentally-conscious building strategy. By strategically combining different construction techniques and materials, homeowners can optimize energy efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize the environmental footprint of their home. The ability to select specific materials and construction methods allows for more targeted use of resources, potentially lowering both initial construction costs and long-

We love building with and for our customers. What Natural Element Homes customers are saying…
Mtn. View Lodge — Jeff & Trina M.
The building materials and precision-cut logs we received from Natural Element Homes were truly beautiful. We are continually amazed at the number of people who stop, take pictures or slowly drive by to admire our log home. The final product is truly exceptional. Natural Element Homes is indeed a first class company!
Rocky Mtn. Retreat — Cynthia J.
Beginning with no more than an exterior photograph and hand-drawn floor plan, the professional team at Natural Element Homes worked with me to design a family cabin which previously existed only in my imagination. During construction, I was impressed with the quality of materials

used and craftsmanship of the subcontractors. I participated in even minute decisions at each step of the building process. My family and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. There is no substitute for the rustic ambiance of authentic timber-frame construction.
Cabin — Rick K.
Everyone who sees the Shoo-Fly Cabin thinks it is awesome. It has been a great addition to our community and has helped us set the standard for other builders. The materials quality was first rate, and the customer service could not be better. Natural Element Homes makes the process of designing and building a true one-of-a-kind home much simpler. Thanks for everything!
Big Chief Mtn. Lodge — Jennifer D. It has been an EASY process thanks to you and our fantastic builder, Paul W. He still says this is the nicest package he has ever built, and he loves the plan. We could not be happier with our home and the effortless process of getting it all together. How many people can say that they had fun during the construction phase? I really did hate to see
it end...in fact, so did our builder, so he has left a couple of "to-do" items undone so he can come back!
Perfect Pearl — Charles B.
The changes I requested in design were readily accomplished with true professionalism. The virtual reality program used by Natural Element Homes was very helpful. All of the materials supplied were of excellent quality and condition. My builder was pleased with the ease of assembling and the high quality of the products. My friends and family are amazed with the finished product, as am I. I only wish I had done this years ago.
Shamrock Ranch — Mike B.
As you know, this is the second home I’ve built with Natural Element Homes, and I love it as much as the first one. I don’t get to visit it too often out in Montana, but when we are there, we are very comfortable. The design is just right for the high-desert ranch life, and it captures the views very well. Thanks again for helping us figure everything out. I don’t think we will build again, but if we do, we know who to call.

How does it start? … With your dream. Design is the next step, which is so much fun. What’s after that? … supply, build, and decorate.

Excerpt from Proverbs 24:3 BY WISDOM A HOUSE IS BUILT, AND THROUGH UNDERSTANDING IT IS ESTABLISHED; THROUGH KNOWLEDGE ITS ROOMS ARE FILLED WITH RARE AND BEAUTIFUL TREASURES.

Natural Element Homes are inherently beautiful, but when properly decorated, they can be stunning and unforgettable. The way your home is decorated is one of the most important things about it. The rooms of your home should engage your emotions and lift your spirits, but such great spaces don’t just happen. Some people have a knack for putting rooms together in a way that is not only pleasing to the eye but also functional. It seems so easy when you experience a well decorated home, but most people cannot pull everything together to make this happen. This is why we’ve launched Natural Element Interiors.
Natural Element Interiors is devoted to properly decorating the spaces of your home based on scale and proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis and harmony. We consider space, line, shape and mass, textures, light, color and pattern. We use our knowledge and experience in these areas to make your home comfortable, beautiful and functional.
Natural Element Interiors offers a physical store for elements, accessories and resources to use in your decorating. We also offer interior design services and consultation to help you enhance your style, solve problems, prevent costly mistakes, and simplify your life as you decorate your home.
Sometimes all you might need is a few hours of consultation and advice, and we offer consultation services to discuss furniture placement, colors, textures, function and a lot more. You’ll likely be amazed at what we can accomplish together in just a few hours. We can help you pull it all together and make your home a place that touches your very soul.

Decoration is really about creating a quality of life, and a beauty within that life that nourishes the soul.

Black Forest Camp — Lillian G.
The entire team from the Building Consultant at Natural Element Homes, to the GC, to the guys actually building my home were all TOP-NOTCH! I was particularly pleased that my house picked from so many plans looks "custom built." My new neighbors came for the house-warming and loved the house so much, they wanted to move in themselves. Thank you "all" for everything!
Snowfield — Alan P.
and comfort that we hope to enjoy for many years to come.
Kokannee — Debra M.
My experience with the product, design and purchasing process provided/facilitated by Natural Element Homes was very positive. I am extremely pleased with the quality of my log home and the administrative process of purchasing the package and the construction. I now have the log home that I have dreamed of since High School.
Raven's Nest Black — Steve W.
Trail's End — Bill C.

People stop all the time to look and to tell us what a beautiful home we have. Our home has really turned into a showplace. We have Natural Element Homes to thank. I must say I highly recommend Natural Element Homes, an organization operated by good people of integrity to ANYONE desiring a quality log home at a fair price.
We arrived in June and sat down with our Sales Representative Phil F. and the great team. We found a plan for our first new dream home. The materials and plans were top of the line. With the expertise of Natural Element Homes and contractor Derek J., our home became one of pride
I had a great experience with your company, your designers, and our builder. We can’t wait for our off-time so we can visit the mountains and enjoy the home. It has turned out to be everything we wanted and more. We love it. You are welcome to show my home any time.
Raven's Nest XL — Geoff and Marilyn B. Dianne has just been wonderful! We could not have built this house without her help. My wife still calls her for advice and if she isn't in the office, she always returns our calls promptly. We've looked at a lot of companies and feel we made the right choice by buying a Natural Element Home. Your company will get a lot of good advertising from us. Thank you for designing and building such a wonderful home.

Of course without letting in any of the elements. Built from Wood That Does Not Rot. Multiple clad colors, grilles, and ENERGY STAR®.
Cladding provides a low-maintenance exterior while still yielding an attractive wood interior. From the inside you can admire the beauty of the wood, while on the outside the aluminum clad shell protects the life of your wood window or patio door for many years.
We’ve got you covered — quality first.

Choose your favorite log style to incorporate into your log home. Nearly every profiled log on the market features an integral tongue and groove milled into the top and bottom of the log; this aids in stacking, and reduces the need for chinking. Tongues and grooves are sealed internally with closed-cell foam insulation to produce high energy efficiency.
• D-shape logs: rounded on the outside and flat inside.
• Full-round logs: rounded inside and out.

or

• Square logs: flat inside and out, and may be milled with a groove which could be chinked. When dealing with milled logs, chinking is a personal preference and not required to seal a house.
• Swedish Cope logs: true round inside and out, with a half-moon-shaped groove on the bottom.
• Many more log profiles are available. Corner joinery includes dovetail, saddle-notch, butt-and-pass, and vertical corner post.
• Multiple species are available, such as Eastern White Pine, Southern Yellow Pine, Western Red Cedar, Cypress, Oak, and more.
• Decorative components include rafter tails, brackets, braces, corbels, shutters, and more. Multiple decorative styles and cuts are available.

Heavy timber trusses are often used in lieu of true timber frame bents. The timber trusses are generally manufactured with mortise-tennon-pegged joinery and are designed to rest on the walls of the home. Trusses can be structural or decorative.

COME TO ME, ALL WHO ARE WEARY AND HEAVY-LADEN, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. – MATTHEW 11:28

A heavy timber bent is designed to carry the roof loads through the bent and down to the floor system through the bent posts. Bents utilize mortise-tennon-pegged joinery to connect the various timber pieces of the truss and sit on the floor system of the home. Additional support under the floor transfers the loads down to the foundation.

Dreaming of an extraordinary mountain home? Maybe a log home? A timber frame home? Hybrid home? Whatever home fills your needs — and your heart — is just a phone call away in Cashiers.
Robert Lambert, Founder/President and John Kries, Vice President, Business Development of Natural Element Homes can build any home plan, any way you want it. They spent the past few decades developing a highly-successful, nationwide, home enterprise. It’s based on four basic steps: Design, Materials, Construction, and Décor.
Robert and John opened their latest Design Center right around the corner in Cashiers.

Mother Nature revealed the perfect name... Natural Element Homes... "I visited the builders and began to see where we could incorporate some of the materials that are physical components here, things like virgin stone and indigenous timber."
Robert says, “A physical presence in Cashiers has been a long term goal that we are now able to realize. It’s a place that I first encountered in the early 2000s. I visited the builders and the construction scene and began to see where we could differentiate ourselves by building in the mountains. We could incorporate some of the materials that are physical components here, things like virgin stone and indigenous timber.
“Our company got its name when I was talking with a co-worker more than 20 years ago. We were standing in the area our
Cashiers Design Center occupies now. As the region’s beauty wrapped itself around us, Mother Nature revealed the perfect business name: Natural Element Homes.”
