ORGANIC AND NATURAL MATTRESSES Why Better Materials Means Better Sleep

Simply put, an organic or natural mattress is a healthier alternative to traditional mattresses. By eliminating all of the chemicals that are often contained in other mattresses, natural mattresses create a safer, healthier sleep environment.

Chemicals such as boric acid, antimony, decabromodiphenyl oxide and formaldehyde are often used in the production of traditional mattresses, which can seep into our skin or we can breathe them in, causing damage to our bodies over time.

Kleinsleep, with locations in Norwalk and Stamford, carries organic mattresses from brands Terra Bed and Natural Sleep. Terra Bed’s lines of all-natural and organic mattresses are made from only all-natural and chemical-free products, which create a safer and healthier product to sleep on. They are also incredibly comfortable and provide significantly better support for the body, while reducing pressure points that cause us to toss and turn often at night.

What’s Inside?

A Terra Bed organic mattress is made of only three special materials provided by nature. Everything in a Terra Bed comes from the earth, and at the end of its life, it can go back to the earth.

Natural Latex: Natural rubber, also known as latex, is the main ingredient in the making of Terra Bed organic mattresses. All natural rubber, prior to being processed into a mattress form, is a milky like substance that is harvested from the Hevea brasiliensis trees which grow in tropical climates. These trees are sustainable and are grown in a pesticide-free environment. The rubber is processed here in the U.S. using the Talalay method, which ensures that its natural properties are kept intact to produce the purest form of rubber possible, free of any chemicals or harmful toxins. The rubber is breathable and resistant to dust mites, mold spores and allergens, as well as extremely durable.

While some have concerns about latex allergies, there have been no known complaints stemming from the natural rubber found in mattresses and pillows.

Organic Wool: Wool is the only material that keeps us cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. That’s why all Terra Bed mattresses feature Organic New Zealand Wool. Ask any runner, hiker or biker why they wear wool socks and they will tell you it is because wool wicks away moisture and keeps them dry and comfortable. This great feature of wool allows mattresses to have the coolest, most breathable and moisture-free sleep surface possible. The result is a more comfortable place to sleep, no matter what the season.

Another benefit of wool is its natural flame retardant ability. Wool does not burn. Wrapping the beds in wool means they don’t have to apply any chemical flame retardants.

Organic Cotton: This key ingredient provides a naturally smooth, soft and cool sleeping surface. Only long staple cotton fibers are used for durability that has no equal. The air circulation and absorbency of the cotton in every Terra Bed natural mattress combined with their proprietary cool channel quilting creates great air circulation around the body. Organic cotton is hypoallergenic and helps to prevent the growth of allergens and mold spores. The mattresses also resist dust mites, since the beds stay cool and dry.

Sleeping Better, Naturally

Old fashioned innerspring or coil mattresses contain springs or coils made of metals, which can be hard on the body over time. When we lie on beds made of springs and metals, the pressure points created against our body restrict our blood from flowing properly, which can lead to limbs falling asleep and the “pins and needles” sensation. These sensations lead to repeated tossing and turning in the night—and ultimately, less restful sleep. Terra Bed mattresses allow the body to sink into the mattress, with far less pressure points and a deeper sleep.

Another issue with typical mattresses is that they lack the needed support in the lumbar area—specifically the lower back. Since traditional mattresses are more or less flat and our bodies are not, typical mattresses tend to leave unsupported gaps, especially in the lower back area. Terra Bed mattresses are designed with natural rubber cores that work with the shape of the

body and fill in all those gaps, allowing for even support for the whole body. The result is a much better supported sleep and a lot less aches and pains.

Terra Beds also allow for much freer air circulation around the body due to their organic cotton covers filled with organic wool. The vast majority of mattresses are made with covers and fillings that are made of manmade fibers such as polyester. These fibers do not breathe very well and tend to trap heat and moisture near the body, which can cause discomfort and lead to more tossing and turning at night.

We all care deeply about our own and our family’s health and well-being, so when it comes time to decide what they are going to sleep on for eight hours each night, consider a natural mattress. It will truly be a long-term investment in the whole family’s health.

Use Sunlight and Sleep to Lower COVID-19 Risk

Two readily available natural strategies— sunlight exposure and sufficient sleep— appear to lower the risks of suffering and dying from COVID-19, report two new studies. Researchers from the UK University of Edinburgh examined records of 2,474 U.S. counties from January to April 2020 to compare numbers of COVID-related deaths to levels of UVA rays from the sun. They found that people living in counties with the highest UVA levels had on average, a 29 percent lower chance of dying from the coronavirus. They ruled out the vitamin D factor by not including counties with UVB levels that would produce the vitamin. Repeating the analysis in England and Italy produced the same results. The researchers theorized that nitric oxide released by the skin when in sunlight may reduce the ability of that virus to replicate.

A second study of 2,884 high-risk healthcare workers in five European countries and the U.S. found that every additional hour of sleep reduces the risk of COVID-19 infection by 12 percent. However, insomnia, disrupted sleep and daily burnout are linked to a heightened risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus, having more severe symptoms and a longer recovery period, reports the researchers in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health. People that had problems like difficulty falling or staying asleep or regularly using sleeping pills were 88 percent more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than those without such issues.
